Killer clowns in a cornfield? Sign me up!
I recently finished this slasher and thought about it for days. I loved the many different levels of horror that were layered throughout the book, the classic 80s slasher tropes, and the modern setting. It was fun and it absolutely freaked me out; I think my jaw permanently unhinged from how hard it hit the floor in that last act, which is saying something because I’m incorporeal. Anywho, a great horror to keep you on your toes and up all night!
Synopsis: Quinn Maybrook and her father have moved to tiny, boring Kettle Springs, to find a fresh start. But what they don’t know is that ever since the Baypen Corn Syrup Factory shut down, Kettle Springs has cracked in half.
On one side are the adults, who are desperate to make Kettle Springs great again, and on the other are the kids, who want to have fun, make prank videos, and get out of Kettle Springs as quick as they can.
Kettle Springs is caught in a battle between old and new, tradition and progress. It’s a fight that looks like it will destroy the town. Until Frendo, the Baypen mascot, a creepy clown in a pork-pie hat, goes homicidal and decides that the only way for Kettle Springs to grow back is to cull the rotten crop of kids who live there now.

Clown in a Cornfield

Clown in a Cornfield by Adam Cesare
“Quinn looked to the horizon as the cornstalks swayed with the breeze. The corn itself could have been waving hello, or it could have been breathing.”
I've read the first two and the third comes out this August. I can't wait. These books were so fun. That perfect mix of disturbing and then so, so satisfying. Just by the title of the third book, I feel like I'm going to be really upset (cults drive me nuts) but I trust Cesare. The previous two were so gratifying. I might give them both a reread this summer...

"You saw a little bit of it, in class. What it's like around here," Janet started. "There's so many people and Mr. Vern's the least of them- trying to shut us up, trying to make us who they want us to be. Trying to tape our mouths shut and tie us in bubble wrap."
“But for one night we're going to say fuck ‘em,” Cole said, picking up the energy. "We're going to do it where nobody's around to stop us. Out in the corn, drink and smoke and do-“
"All the things that make Kettle Springs great," Ronnie added.
"Kettle Springs is great?" Tucker sneered.
"It could be," Janet said, suddenly wistful. "It will be for one night."
"And you," Cole said, winking at Quinn, "cannot miss it. Not if it's the last thing you do."

Clown in a Cornfield 3: The Church of Frendo will be published on August 20, 2024 via HarperTeen. It's author Adam Cesare's third installment in the slasher series, following 2020's Clown in a Cornfield and 2022's Clown in a Cornfield 2: Frendo Lives.
The 320-page young adult horror novel will be available in hardcover, e-book, and audio book. Matt Ryan Tobin returned to design the cover. The synopsis is below.
Quinn has just survived yet another bloody run-in with the murderous clown Frendo, but somehow still she knows this won’t be the last. Tired of being hunted and seeing innocent people hurt, Quinn believes the only way to beat the horror is to take justice into her own hands - and stop the Frendo followers herself. Little does she know that this path will take her across cornfields and state lines, to where she will have to face the most dangerous and bloody menace yet: true believers.
Pre-order Clown in a Cornfield 3: The Church of Frendo.
