Oceans Rising (2017)
While I didn't enjoy this film, that doesn't mean you won't. No matter what I say, the people involved in this project did it: they actually made a movie. That's something to be applauded. With that established...
After sitting through H.G. Wells’ War of the Worlds, King of the Lost World, 100 Million BC, Mega Piranha, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes, 2010: Moby Dick, Mega Shark versus Crocosaurus, Mega Python vs. Gatoroid and 2-Headed Shark Attack, I swore I’d never watch another film by The Asylum. Unfortunately, it wasn’t my turn to choose what bad movie we’d watch this week, so here we go again. We’re neck-deep in something while watching Oceans Rising, and it ain't water.
Three years ago, Josh (Jason Tobias) warned the scientific community that solar flares would cause the polar ice caps to melt and the planet’s tectonic plates to shift. When the oceans rise and wipe out all coastal cities, only the scientist’s foresight and the help of a few lucky survivors, including his ex-wife Pam (Summer Spiro) can help reverse the disastrous changes to our planet and save the human race.
This film doesn’t care. The performances are lousy, the special effects are never convincing and the dialogue is a soup of scientific terms crudely fitted together. It can’t even get filmmaking basics right. Josh rescues 9 people with his boat but only a few of them are introduced. In every scene that follows, you’ll be wondering who’s who and trying to figure out if that guy is someone new, or if they just had no lines previously. When the non-scientist characters speak, it’s to jerk the plot in the direction of the next predictable or pointless development. Oceans Rising hardly has the budget to show off the money shots of a disaster film and instead wastes its time with petty character drama you won’t care about.
Even basic framing is beyond the crew's abilities. Cutting the shot strategically might convince us that the survivors of this cataclysmic flood are walking in knee-deep salt water... instead of dry land. In two shots, I noticed background elements that were not supposed to be there. We’re not talking about boom mikes or crewmembers either. I’m talking about a sailboat... and a city! You couldn’t shoot from a different angle to avoid making your hero look like an idiot when he says the whole coast has been destroyed?
I can’t call it a saving grace, but the uniform badness of Oceans Rising does make it "tolerable" to watch. There’s always something new to make fun of so while you’ll be bored by this Syfy original directed by Adam Lipsius, if you put in a bit of work with your friends, you can find a way to entertain yourselves – as long as you like terrible motion pictures. Even then, I can’t in good consciousness call this film “so bad it’s good” in any way. It’s the kind of catastrophe that people who don’t watch a lot of bad movies think is “so bad it’s good”, but it isn’t. No one poured any effort, love or passion into this project so it’s beaten you to the punch already. It’s making fun of YOU for wasting your time on it, not the other way around.
No one should waste their time with Oceans Rising. It’ll have you craving for the disaster movies we usually see on the big screen, the ones with appalling scripts, lousy performances, and cliché-jammed plots that at least have the decency to deliver good special effects. (March 24, 2018)

Review: Oscar Winners Richard Dreyfuss & Mira Sorvino Tackle A Crime Story In The Revenge Thriller THE LAST JOB
Review: Oscar Winners Richard Dreyfuss & Mira Sorvino Tackle A Crime Story In The Revenge Thriller THE LAST JOB
The Last Job (aka Crime Story) took me by surprise. I was expecting a by-the-numbers revenge thriller with Richard Dreyfuss seeking revenge on those who wronged him. Yes, that’s the general plot to writer/director Adam Lipsius’ thriller but the film is much more layered than that. I was really taken by the father-daughter dynamic between Dreyfuss and fellow Academy Award winner Mira Sorvino – and…

Movie Review: Dreyfuss and Sorvino are at odds over their "Crime Story"
Movie Review: Dreyfuss and Sorvino are at odds over their “Crime Story”
Some good ideas and chewy, hardboiled dialogue don’t entirely go to waste in “Crime Story,” a thriller that barely transcends its beyond-generic title. You have to buy Oscar winner Richard Dreyfuss, in his reduced-mobility years, as a retired mobster still capable of roughing guys one half to one-third his age up. And you can’t, something writer-director Adam Lipsius fails to write around. But…
