Just saw a deranged LinkedIn post about an actuary who reads her two elementary school boys a book explaining Lloyd's of London as a bedtime story and like I'm sorry girl I know you think you're educating your kids on important financial concepts but I guarantee you they are absorbing absolutely NONE of that info. I couldn't explain Lloyd's of London to the average grown adult in a way that they'd understand do you honestly think you can convey this information to a pair of fucking eight year olds??? Do you smoke crack is that what you smoke? Crack??? Just give them a copy of the first Percy Jackson book I guarantee you it will give them less to talk about in therapy when they're adults

When she looks back, she thinks maybe her undoing was her own doing.
Always desperate to impress, she ran herself into the ground to remain top of her class in as many as she could, joined extracurricular after extracurricular. As she grew, so did her parents expectations. Every academic year, she had to work harder for those 'good job!'s and 'we're proud of you!'s.
By high school, her parents were already talking about all the things she could do with her future — lawyer, doctor, surgeon, actuary. She settled on law school, inspired in part by Elle Woods and how her parents' eyes lit up the brightest whenever it was brought up in conversation.
Through it all, her older brother was her biggest supporter. When their parents would lament about her dropping to second in class, her brother would take her out for ice cream. When she fell asleep at her desk, he'd move her to her bed and turn off the light. Sometimes she'd complain that he gave her too much grace, but he never faltered regardless.
Moving to another state for university should've been her chance to experience life without everyone's expectations weighing her down, but she could never quiet those voices in her head. A month in she's already struggling, and by the end of her first year, her near daily calls to her brother have persuaded her that there's no shame in coming home.
She moves in with him when she returns to avoid disappointed looks, but it's inevitable. Family dinners are uncomfortable, but continue almost every fortnight even now, a decade later, just to remind her what she could have been had she prioritised her education short-term instead of her peace of mind. These days it's become easier to let those words bounce off her shinier spine.
Initially, she's only supposed to be a temporary mail carrier over the festive season, but she loves it so much that she re-applies at the first sign of more permanent vacancies, and now three years later, she still loves it just as much as the first day.
These days, she's steadily unlearning all her own teachings from childhood; to take breaks, to learn new things at her own speed, to not worry about what others think. It's a slow process, but she's got the rest of her now much more peaceful life to figure it all out.

What is STEM?
STEM is an acronym that stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. It is a Senior High School strand, a specialized educational track, and development that studies the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. STEM-related education seeks to develop the expertise, ability, and capability of each individual to work effectively and efficiently across disciplines and generate skills, knowledge, concepts, and ideas through learning this kind of field.
The first letter in the word STEM stands for Science.

It works for a violently greedy space-future insurance company, it has actuarial tables on everything The Company knows could damage its profitability.
It has modules on everything The Company wants it to know about. But it knows the education modules are crap. It knows the modules are deliberately limited, restricted, and/or redacted so that a rogue SecUnit can't pilot a shuttle or reprogram a transport's destination or impersonate people The Pretender style.
It's also seen space monsters. It pulls a client out of a space monster's mouth in the first few pages of the first book. It knows they're real even if the Company's modules don't acknowledge them. There's always the off chance Murderbot is the only secunit to routinely encounter space monsters. It just assumes The Company is full of shit, but it might be that Murderbot's lived experience - and Murderbot itself - is "uniquely divergent."
I like to think that's the case. "Not this shit again" as it blows a hole in the carapace of the weird Cthulhu-esque Old One space monster that just crawled out of a worm hole that no one else has ever even heard of before. "Is there ANOTHER cracker wrapper in the sink? Damnit people we TALKED about this"
