#Acting is an artform and if you aren't putting effort in then someone who's willing to do so should have your job instead.

I've never been more (immediately) hurt by a statement than when I read "actors are just actors" on a post complaining about how High and Mads didn't really put that much thought into their Hannibal characters and don't care as much about Hannigram as the fans do.
WE ARE NOT ALL LIKE THAT
I beg you all to PLEASE realize we are not all the same
They are outliers here. Most actors work with their characters, they try to understand them top to bottom (this of course depends on the project. The level character depth you get in a long running Tv show is wayyyyyy different from the level of depth you get from a 15 minute short film)
Personally I want to know everything. From the character's favorite color or music genre, to their motivation: why they do what they do.
And if the writer doesn't have answers, I come up with them. I take what I'm given and I build on it. I use these little details to build a more realistic character.
Being an actor is so much more than just reading words on a script. I've been told a few times now "don't method act, it's dangerous, and it's bad for you"
But I've gotten this far by "living truthfully in fiction" and I expect it to carry me further
#I say this as if I've been part of a large scale production....#But that doesn't make this any less valid#I'm speaking not just for myself but for any actor who cares about their characters#If you see acting as just another job: you show up every day and read the lines then you go home and forget about it#You're not really an actor#At the very least you shouldn't be one#Acting is an artform and if you aren't putting effort in then someone who's willing to do so should have your job instead.#There's nothing wrong with the fans knowing more about your character than you do#They're going to see things that you don't notice regardless just because you play the character#But you should still know your character and you should feel things about them and you should understand their relationships#How do they view the character(a) they're speaking to in the current scene? How does that affect their actions?#These are questions you constantly need to be asking yourself so you can perform and interact with those around you as your character#idle speaks#queenie rambles#Acting
