Tamlin Crackships

Since Tamlin is tragically single, I tend to ship him with the entirety of Prythian. Here are some of my favorite rare pairings with him:

On rarepairs vs. crack ships.

This is something that I've noticed ever since I joined the fandom, but recent events have finally prompted me to make this post: Azris (Azriel x Eris Vanserra) is not a crack ship. They are a rarepair—a ship that makes up only a small portion of the total fanworks.

A crack ship, as defined by Fanlore, is "a ship that is highly ridiculous, bizarre, disturbing, and/or unlikely to ever become canon. The characters don't have any chemistry, never interact, are in different canons or timelines, are different species, one is an inanimate object, etc."

I think the most common reason Azris is mislabeled as a crack ship is simply that people aren't aware of the difference or the connotations that the term "crack ship" may carry. I wanted to make this post to help clarify things.

I agree that Azris is unlikely to ever become canon because the books make it clear that SJM has other plans. (I don’t want them to be canon, but that’s my personal opinion.) However, this doesn't mean Azris is canonically implausible as the universe currently stands. Eris and Azriel have several significant interactions in the series. If SJM were to hand the series off to another writer who wanted to make Azris happen, the building blocks would already be there.

Eris catches Azriel spying in Autumn and the following day he meets with Rhys, Kier, Azriel, Mor, and Feyre in the Hewn City to forge an alliance. (ACOWAR CH. 26)

The infamous High Lords meeting where we learn just how intense Azriel's hatred of Eris is. (ACOWAR CH. 45)

Cassian and Azriel tracking Eris across the Continent when he's captured by Briallyn, culminating in Azriel rescuing Eris from Koschei and the mortal queen and bringing him back to the Night Court. (ACOSF CH. 64 - 71)

This isn't an exhaustive list, just a few examples. Azriel and Eris also have a shared history stretching back centuries before the books take place. On the point of chemistry—hatred is a passionate emotion and the series makes the animosity between Azriel and Eris very clear. Enemies to lovers is one of the most popular romance tropes for a reason, I don't think I need to elaborate on that point.

That covers the "unlikely to ever become canon," "never interact," and "don't have any chemistry" portions of the definition.

The "highly ridiculous, bizarre, disturbing" part of the definition is where the negative connotations may come into play. (I'm going to branch out from just Azris now.) Again, I'm fairly confident that the majority of the fandom is unaware that "crack ship" carries these implications. I would certainly hope that people aren't willfully misusing the term to denigrate certain ships.

In this fandom specifically, where all of the major canon ships are M/F and the vast majority of fanworks are also primarily dedicated to het pairings, the distinction between crack ships and rarepairs is vital to help build and maintain an inclusive community.

Queer ships in this fandom (Emorie, Gwynlain, Azris, Cazriel etc.) are often called crack ships when they are, in fact, rarepairs. Again, I really hope that this is primarily due to a misunderstanding of the terms. It hurts to see a rarepair in which you see yourself and your relationships represented being associated with the terms ridiculous, bizarre, and disturbing. It will hurt regardless of the intention of the person using the term.

tl;dr just be mindful of your words.

“I’ll give you a ride.” The offer is tossed to her from over his shoulder as he shoves both hands in his pockets.

Gwyn peels herself from the wall and trails after him, rubbing at the indentations made by the brick wall digging into her shoulder.

“You’re leaving already?” she asks. She glances nervously behind them, towards the front of the bar and the music she can barely hear now, beneath the frantic beat of her pulse.

“Yeah,” Rhys says. “Why? Did you need to go back for something?”

“No,” Gwyn says, shaking her head slightly. “Nothing.”

There is a satisfied glint to Rhys’s eyes when he sees her jogging to catch up to him, her heels clipping on the sidewalk. Walking side by side, the bar and the music rapidly fade from the foreground until all she can see is how the stars seem more brilliant when they are reflected in his eyes.

“Where are we going?” Gwyn breathes, forcing herself to look directly ahead as the heat flares in her cheeks again. She wrinkles her nose up against it, as if the ridges she creates across the bridge of her nose might be able to stave off a wildfire.

“You pick,” Rhys says, shrugging. “Mine or yours?”

His knuckles graze against the back of her neck, sweeping all of her hair to one side, and then he leaves his arm draped casually over her shoulder. Her knees nearly buckle beneath her.

“Yours,” she says. 

Rhys beams at her, his teeth glinting white.

“Mine.”

I wonder how the banter between Gwyn & Dorian would be. I think he would be amused by her, and if he found out what all she has been through he would admire her for how strong and optimistic and kind she is. And the shadow hands, yes! So much banter and charisma between them. I’m a Rowaelin & Manorian, but I could see Gwyn & Dorian being a little similar to Celaena & Dorian in the first TOG book.💙 (I think Aelin would like Gwyn.)

Fenrys and Gwyn- I can write an entire essay why that's my favourite unlikely pairing . They are both Twins .... They have both lost their Twin sibling... They are both warm and loving despite everything they went through. They are both incredibly loyal and protective of the people they love ... The way they would understand each others trauma , ugh I would love it if people wrote fics for this pairing the potential is so great

Ruhn and Gwyn - protective of their Friends and family, understand physical trauma , full of love , shadows - now hear me out while I do think its uniquely Azriels shadows that love Gwyn since they are mates ... I could see her charming any and all characters with shadows ... she is that glowing ember that shadows thrive in.

Instead of answering, Eris lowered his hips and ground against Kallias.

To his slight horror, a choked, needy sound flew past his parted lips, but fuck it was beautifully obscene to watch Eris’s length moving against his. The mauve-red flushed color of him was such a contrast to the more subtle pink-peach of Kallias’s weeping cock.

“Look at me.”

He forced his eyes up. Eris searched his face. 

Another slow grind. 

He shivered. 

A wolfish grin.

“That’s what you want isn’t it?” Eris’s voice dripped with arrogant satisfaction. “You’re trying to goad me into fucking you.” He reached down and took them both in his hand.

“Maybe.” Kallias sucked in a sharp breath at the startling heat of being caught between the Autumn male’s hand and his cock. Even without much magic, there was no mistaking the fire in Eris’s blood, made even more obvious by the ice in his own.

Eris stroked them firmly. “You could have just asked.”

“Would you have listened?” Kallias had to bite his lip to keep another unbidden little noise from escaping. 

“That’s a very good point.” Eris conceded after a moment’s consideration.

Kallias could feel his own urgency rising. He needed this. They both did. The force of his desire outweighed his dread of this reprieve’s end. “Well? We don’t have all night.”
