KIIT & KISS Plays ‘Santa’ to the Pandemic-hit
It is about the Joy of Giving that has manifested itself during the hours of need and that too at a time, as crippling as the pandemic, the sharing of a morsel matters.
KIIT & KISS Founder, Dr. Achyuta Samanta has done that for years and that too his initiative during the pandemic in specific has remained exemplary. And he responded swiftly when the Covid-19 hit Odisha and tried to reduce the sufferings of thousands not only human but, animals as well who look up for a stimulus to survive. KIIT & KISS had no class yardstick but it was all pervasive and a single soul was not left unattended.  It did in 2020 and the repeat of that during the second wave speaks for itself in 2021.

                       No Class Barriers
Right from patients to the thousands of migrant workers, people in jeopardy and people gasping for basic needs in containment zones, to slums, it is the helping hands of KIIT & KISS gave the healing touch. It is no mere task that his (Dr. Samant’s) initiative took off in time to provide cooked and dry food to the needy in almost 13 districts of Odisha.
Tumblr media
Dr. Samanta, who represents Kandhamal district as its Member of Parliament, merged all the boundaries with a extraordinary outreach of help to people of several districts such as: Koraput, Rayagada, Malkangiri, Nabrangpur, Kalahandi, Balangir, Sambalpur, Sonepur, Sundargarh, Kendujhar, Mayurbhanj, Kandhamal, Boudh, Ganjam, and Gajapati.
Staff members have joined together to undertake such a massive task with the support of the respective district administrations.
As the lockdown and shutdowns got imposed the task gets harder to operate within the SOPs.
Besides the above locations KIIT & KISS made their reach into the interiors in and around the capital city Bhubaneswar and cooked food were provided to the inmates Buddha Nagar Leprosy Colony, Jagannath Leprosy Colony, Keharinagar Swapna Trust and Blind Association in Satya nagar. It all started in May 5 2021 that would continue till 19th May of the second wave.
Taking Up Study with Stimulus
Meanwhile, we cannot lose sight of the student community that has faced the brunt no less and it still continues to suffer.  All academic processes have remained disrupted for over one year now. KIIT Deemed to be University, which has been recognized as an Institution of Eminence by the Govt. of India, has 30,000 students from all parts of India and over 50 countries. Responding swiftly to the challenge, KIIT Deemed to be University was the first university in the country to start online classes right from the outbreak of the pandemic.

A petition has been registered in Bhubaneswar SDJM court against KIIT and KISS founder Achyuta Samant for conducting Pusyaviseka (self-coronation) at KIIT Jagannath temple similar to the ritual conducted by Puri Gajapati Maharaj on Pausa Purnima day. KIIT temple trustee and 15 others have been made parties in the case filed by a Bhubaneswar-based lawyer. Samant had drawn criticism from various sections after he conducted his own ‘Pusyaviseka’ ritual which is only reserved for the Puri king. Sri Jagannath temple servitors and Puri Mukti Mandap pandits had staged agitation in front of the temple in Puri demanding unconditional apology from Samant. Jagannath Sena and Srikshetra Suraksha Manch had also staged similar demonstrations and warned Samant of more protests if he doesn’t seek forgiveness from Lord Jagannath in Puri. The protesters alleged that he insulted Gajapati Maharaj and Jagannath culture by conducting Pusyaviseka ritual.  Under pressure from various sections, Samant had later tendered an unconditional apology and promised that such incident will never occur in future.
