Part of it is Marxist/acceleartionist ideology, but a big part of the appeal of violence, across the political spectrum, is that violence feels more emotionally fulfilling to a lot of people. It feels exciting, and dramatic, and more radical and revolutionary than "politics". This is of course reinforced by millennia of culture and propaganda equating violence of various kinds with heroism, manliness, courage, and justice.

The excuses for why violence is supposedly the best and only means of change are usually (though not always) more of an after the fact rationalization, in my experience.

I’d almost respect American leftists more if they just admitted that the reason they prefer the idea of revolution over participation in electoral politics is that they want to feel like the main character. Imagine having absolutely 0 experience of conflict while also routinely denigrating anyone with professional experience in war and governance, and thinking that your revolution would help anyone except violent opportunistic young men.
