(wip) To high powered mages, from Blood in Moderation, magic sounds like music. Which gives me a good reason to practice dynamic poses. This character is called Jeffery, he’s a bit of a savant when it comes to casting. The magic system in BiM I suppose is technically a low magic one.

The majority of magics are elemental in expression and generally adhere to the known laws of physics. All living beings have some amount of magic, as it is life, energy, blood- but only a small subset of humans possess the talent to wield it.

With most mages being inclined to certain expressions of magic over others, be it wielding fire, ice, or what have you. On the rarer side of things talents such as accelerating the bodies natural healing processes, reversing injuries, and even rearranging one’s magic to create quasi physical objects (such as energy shields or projectiles) exist.

Mages can pool their magic with one another to cast more powerful spells. With historical reports telling of Abufan savages using such techniques during the final Vanberg civil war to summon hurricanes.

It was rumored the Puppet King Jeffery had the ability to command storms himself, fully embodying the power of lightning and ether; that he could teleport at will without array or other casters. This is largely contested though.

On the darker side of things, exists alchemy; arrays drawn in blood which can help even the weakest mage cast feats well beyond them as well as certain other restricted practices, mostly lost to time.

It always chuffs me that the simple ubiquitous preposition “above” is three Old English (OE) prepositions piled on top of each other (a, bi, ufan), the latter of which is itself two more Proto-Germanic (PGmc) prepositions (*ub plus ablative *-ane).

So etymologically, it’s “on by above”, where that embedded “above” is really “from up” or “up there” or “up <separated from speaker>”.

This is actually a fairly typical treadmill in language, especially among short words that carry a lot of grammar like prepositions or word endings: You have a word but it’s somewhat more predictable because of its role in the utterance, so the speaker doesn’t have to emphasize it so much, and so the speaker starts slurring it and mushing it up. But when it gets mushed up too much, listeners (and everybody who is a speaker is also a listener) need more definition to be sure they understand, so you tack on another little bit of a word to make it more prominent again. Then the process starts over again. 

So PGmc’s useful word “up there” gets mushy, so OE sticks another ablative-type preposition on it and you get bufan, “by up there”. (Note that -f- between two vowels is pronounced -v-.) But then there’s a whole sort of fad where all these placement words gets on- tacked on the front, which immediately gets degraded to a-, (cf. across, against, around), and now you have abufan, “on by up there”. But now that’s gotten long and you don’t need to say that much to be understood, so by Middle English, where everybody is busily removing anything that looks like it might be an ending anyway, you lose the final n. Now, it’s probably three syllables still, but the last one is barely a puff of sound, and by the Early Modern English period, lazy speakers don’t bother saying that puff of sound across an enormous population of words (all those silent-e’s that help make our spelling insane). And thus, in something like 2000 years, you’ve taken a two-part word with five sounds, thrown away the whole rear part (in multiple stages), tacked two more parts on front (throwing away some of their sounds in the process), changed the pronunciation of all the vowels to boot, but kept spelling it the way it was pronounced 700 years ago.

And that’s why historical linguists have to work very, very hard at their jobs.

Blood in Moderation (world building)

The lands Vanberg are extremely mountainous both to the west and the north. With old forests blanketing the ranges and cave networks intermixed with the ruins of ancient man. Some area’s still largely untamed, as these wilds have proven difficult to master; the vestiges of Abufan men still roam.

The Vangnese of these regions are a mixed lot of poor stock, often times adhering towards the ways and traditions of the Abufan parts of their blood. A superstitious and backwards people of low worth and intellect; the lowest of lowborn men.

Legends of demons made flesh proliferate their beliefs. Of creatures that mimic the human form, starving and merciless.

These men, more the most, due well to hide those among them gifted with magics; viewing mages as sacred. Their only way of communing with the weather and to ward against these ‘demons.’

Removing magic touched children from these secluded villages and towns has always proven a difficult costly venture for law-men. Mages often times going unknown of well into adulthood. Most posses illegal guns and are not afraid to use them.

Goal for this year is to not shy away from backgrounds and landscapes as I improve me character illustrations. Forcing myself outside my illustrations comfort zone.
