CFP: Computational Humanities (Editors: @nolauren, @dmimo, @jmjafrx)
Submit! Submit! Submit! We want to read your amazing work!
CFP: Computational Humanities Jessica Marie Johnson, David Mimno, and Lauren Tilton, Editors
Deadline for 500-Word Abstracts: January 10, 2020
Part of the Debates in the Digital Humanities Series A book series from the University of Minnesota Press Matthew K. Gold and Lauren F. Klein, Series Editors
Debates in the Digital Humanities are animated by questions about which practices, modes of inquiry, and ways of knowing should be acknowledged and engaged with. One area that continues to elicit equal measures of excitement and anxiety is work that is labeled as quantitative or as computational analysis. While text analysis has been the most prominent example, recent advances in technologies for images and sound have expanded computational approaches to other cultural forms. New forms of data from listservs and code repositories to tweets and other social media content have only enlivened debates about what counts as digital humanities scholarship, what kind of knowledge computational approaches can produce, who should be engaged in data inquiry, and what are its stakes. Theorizing the role of computation in humanities, it seems, is as much about power, prestige, and precarity as it is about p-values, and this volume aims to put all of these issues in conversation. Acknowledging the need for a space for reflexive and specialized debates about computation in DH, Debates in the Digital Humanities: Computational Humanities invites contributions that engage with computational and technical issues as well as about the role of computation itself. The volume is guided by, but not limited to, the following topics and questions:
Objects of study: What are the reasons that we apply computational methods to pursue humanistic inquiry, and to what extent is computation able to support those goals? To what degree are certain forms and kinds of humanistic inquiry more amenable to computational approaches? How important is it to develop computational methods specific to the humanities? How does the humanities challenge computational methods–in either conception or application? What do we do about those challenges? How do academic institutions, community networks, and everyday people influence or impact our objects of study?
Methods: How, if at all, does computation add to our ability to make humanistic claims about art, life, politics, and culture? Is there an ideal synthesis between computational and non-computational methods, and if so, what should be the balance? If not, where are the fissures between computation and non-computational methods? If we do use computation to inform our scholarship, to what degree should the methods be visible, and if so, how? Are there computational methods that have not been seen as computation in the past? What is the history of computation and how does it intersect with, critique, or reject the humanities? How does computation intersect with, reject, or critique issues of race, gender, sexuality, class, and more? Where should computation go next? What are computation futures?
Epistemology: What processes make a conclusion acceptable? What counts as evidence? What counts as data? Who is doing the counting? Is there a balance between observation and explanation? To what extent do scholars need to understand the methods and tools that they are using to create knowledge? To what extent do scholars need to understand power dynamics underlying the methods and tools they are using to create knowledge? Who is computation for? Is computation an art? A politic? A community?
Intelligibility: Who needs to understand the models that are being applied, and how well? How do we train for and implement computational work? There is a perceived binary between the sciences’ focus on reproducible, interchangeable experiments and the humanities’ focus on unique, particular, interpretive discourse. Does computation shift or problematize this binary? What are the stakes of reproducibility? Does ephemerality have a place in computation?
Ethics: What responsibilities do we have when using computational methods? How can histories of computation inform our current practice? What potential harms could arise, and how can we eliminate or mitigate them? Can computation shift, rectify, repair harm?
Labor: How does the use of computation present a challenge to disciplinary and institutional patterns of labor, credit, and authorship? What are the strategies for making such work legible within and across disciplines and institutional frameworks? Who builds the hardware (from server farms to underwater cables) that makes computation possible? Who does the invisible labor that makes this work possible? What is invisible labor in a computational framework?
We invite contributions from across the humanities, social sciences, and STEM fields (regardless of rank, position, or institutional affiliation). We encourage debates that engage with multimodal materials such as images and time-based media. Both single-authorship and multiple-authorship are encouraged. We also welcome nominations of blog posts or other short-form pieces that address the above and related issues. Abstracts should be no more than 500 words, with additional bibliography. Each author should submit a short biography and two page CV. Contributions are due January 10th and should be submitted through the form here (to be added).
The Debates in the Digital Humanities editorial team will review all abstracts, and authors of selected abstracts will be invited to submit full essays by January 24th, 2020. The team will consult with the authors of selected abstracts about the length of their contributions, which will range from 2000 to 8000 words. As the series aims to introduce fully conceived scholarship on issues of pressing importance to the field, this volume will operate on a compressed production schedule. Contributors will be expected to participate in peer-to-peer and editorial review in May 2020; revised essays will be due in August 2020. The volume will be published in print and online in an open-access edition through the Manifold platform.
Have a question? Please email Jessica Marie Johnson ([email protected]), David Mimno ([email protected]) and Lauren Tilton ([email protected]).
Timeline:
Abstract Due: January 10th Accepted Abstracts: January 24th Essay Submission Deadline: May 15th Peer-to-Peer Review: June 8 – June 22 Editor’s Review of Peer Review/Summary Letter: July 6 Revision Due: August 28

CFP: Antennae: Matter Matters, The Journal of Nature in Visual Culture, October 3 - December 1, 2017
‘Antennae’ is soliciting academic and non-academic writing, along with artist portfolios and other experimental formats for inclusion in a forthcoming issue titled ‘Matter Matters’. The issue will focus on the intersection of new theories of materiality and the non-human involved in current practices that move beyond or critically address Postmodernist aesthetics.
As ontology, epistemology, politics, and ethics appear increasingly problematized by various iterations of new materialisms, the significance of corporeality and the place of embodied humans and non-humans in relation to a material world is more than ever before characterized by a new awareness of the interconnectedness of socio-/bio-/eco-spheres. This shift is highlighting the inherent fragility of the systems that we co-constitute and simultaneously share. What role can art play in mapping, envisioning, and constructing new aesthetics suited to the urgency of political, cultural, and climatic catastrophes that appear ever more threatening on a global scale?
Considered subjects include, but are not restricted to:
New media in contemporary art Posthumanism and new materialism Postmodernism and materiality Histories of animal rendering Vibrant Matter Agency of surfaces and veneers Biomatter and institutional critique Materiality, visibility and invisibility Decolonizing materiality Materiality and preservation Transubstantiations in contemporary art Materiality, race, and gender politics
Academic essays = length 6000-10000 words Artists’ portfolio = 10 images max along with 1000 words max statement/commentary Interviews = maximum length 8000 words Fiction = maximum length 8000 words
Deadlines: Abstracts: 1st of December 2017 (Please submit a 350 words abstract and up to two images along with a CV) The selection process is finalized and feedback sent by: 15th of January 2018 Final Submissions of finished pieces: 1st of June 2018 Please email any questions to: Giovanni Aloi: Editor in Chief of ‘Antennae: The Journal of Nature in Visual Culture’ [email protected] (http://www.antennae.org.uk)

Important Pointers:
Have business cards available for exhibition
When selling work through the uni, there is a 25% commission, it's suggested to just add that amount onto our original price so we're not losing £££
What I want to Achieve for Exhibition:
Based off of my previous tutorial with Glyn, I have come to a more cemented idea of the particular work I wish to create and display at the exhibition as ‘Outrider’. I’d like to create:
4 print runs (screen printed/ digital print/ laser cut stamp print/linocut)
1 or 2 t-shirt design runs, to display and sell at the exhibition.
These outcomes will align with my Graphic Illustrator/Popular Artist practice of appropriating and synthesising material from TV & Film.
In terms of trends, I have created 1 of the prints based on Logan. This is a film that has already been released, but there is a lot of hype surrounding it, and ay be tinted with Nostalgia by the time the exhibition comes around in 2 months time. In similarity of this is the movie ‘Get Out’, another film I think will be great to explore through illustration and print, as I could use subject expressions unconventional crops, trippy backgrounds for maximum emphasis to portray the disturbing and hypnotic themes presented.
In relation to my theory, ‘Waves of the Market’, outlined in my dissertation last term, it would also be effective to explore upcoming releases that will be current news, during the time of exhibition. In regards to this I will explore Alien Covenant, which is released on the 12th of May, and Ghost in the Shell, released on the 30th of March. This is earlier, but presents itself as a visually stunning and engaging piece through trailers alone, and will likely have a wealth of material to play with. This may be likely to end up asa t-shirt design, in similarity to my deconstructed/abstracted/imagined ‘Westworld’ pieces.

International Abstract Design Competition
Into The Rabbit Hole Design Competition
INTRODUCTION
The pandemic has proven to be a test for relation between human and architecture, lockdown – The experience of living within the four walls. How architecture affected your mind in the lockdown? What are stressed architectural spaces? What was the state of your mind as you were locked down? This pandemic has created an increased urgency to strengthen mental health care. We also realised the importance of role of architecture in mental health.
This competition aims to explore the use of imagination to design architecture spaces that can heal human mind. Explore your ideas at extreme levels. We as architects and designers are responsible more for the well-being of people. So let’s get more creative and come up extraordinary solutions for this urgent issue faced by humanity.
We do not expect literal designs, we expect ideas and design development beyond the conditioned thinking.
Nothing is unreal!
“The first step is to establish that something is possible. Then probability will occur.”
– Elon Musk
We expect:
To break the banality of healing architecture designs and test extreme possibilities in architectural design.
Think outside the box. In fact don’t even consider the box ever existed create your own geometry, your own volume and an underland of your own. A space that has the capacity to heal stressed living being.
Everything starts with imagination – an idea – that may seem unreal initially but you never know.
Keywords: Rabbit Hole, Underland, Imagination, Healing Architecture
Rabbit Hole: A complexly bizarre / difficult state or situation conceived of as a hole into which one falls or descends.
Design the underland: How architecture can help address mental health, architectural intervention into stressed spaces.
Imagination: Use your imagination to convert melancholic experience into architectural healing.
“Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will get you everywhere..”
– Albert Einstein.
