[TRIVIA] Musical Touken Ranbu: Sato Ryuji and the Bright Future of the "Musical Touken Ranbu"

In their 9th anniversary performance the "Musical Touken Ranbu ~Iwainojuku Ranbu Ongyoku Sai~", the production ended on this message for fans:

"See, there was a bright future waiting, right?"

This is actually an unscripted quote that was said by Sato Ryuji, who plays Kashuu Kiyomitsu.

Like everyone else, the "Musical Touken Ranbu" was hit hard by the effects of COVID-19. Through clips from the performances during this period, we journeyed through these challenges together with them leading up to this point as they celebrated their 9th anniversary with the "Musical Touken Ranbu ~Iwainojuku Ranbu Ongyaku Sai~".

Some of the productions that were hit hard during that time were the "Musical Touken Ranbu ~Shizuka no Umi no Paraiso" and the "Musical Touken Ranbu ~Bakumatsu Tenrouden~ 2020".

The "Musical Touken Ranbu ~Bakumatsu Tenrouden~ 2020" had 41 out of their 60 performances cancelled.

And, this had a devastating effect, not only on the production, but also on the fans, who, amidst their own personal struggles brought about by COVID-19, had been looking forward to the performances.

As a cast member of the "Musical Touken Ranbu ~Bakumatsu Tenrouden~ 2020", despite being one of the people most affected by the situation, Sato Ryuji remained a pillar of strength for the company and the fans.

NOTE: In addition to the Toumyu cancellations, Ryuji had also faced complete cancellations for 2 other productions, and worked to turn The Brow Beat's last indie live into an online stream with no live audience to ensure it could still proceed.

It all started with his curtain call comment during the grand finale performance of the "Musical Touken Ranbu ~Bakumatsu Tenrouden~ 2020".

Masters, thank you for attending today! And, thank you for showering us with affection and taking good care of us. We knew that this era is a challenging era. And, course, we also know the future that's before us, the history that's before us. We also know that there will be ma~ny more days for us to laugh together with our masters. That's why, if the Time Retrograde Army tries to get in the way of that, at any time at all, please call us. From now on too, we leave ourselves in your care. Well then, see you again!

Curtain calls for the "Musical Touken Ranbu" are adlibbed by the actors, but done in character.

And, Ryuji used this to the fullest effect.

Through the voice of Kashuu Kiyomitsu, a Touken Danshi who is from the future (Touken Ranbu is set in 2205 AD), he reassured the fans that, even if this dark period felt endless, a bright future awaited everyone.

He also followed up on this in his update after the performance, expressing his appreciation for the fans, and once again, encouraging everyone to look forward to a better tomorrow where they would all meet again.

Really, thank you so much. I have no words except for words of appreciation. I can't find anything else to say other than words of appreciation, so much so that even snappy jokes feel boorish. In a wonderful future, let's meet again.

Ryuji then participated in "Musical Touken Ranbu 5th Anniversary ~Kotobuki Ranbu Ongyoku Sai~" (which was also impacted by COVID-19). Post this performance, he would only make a guest appearance in the "Musical Touken Ranbu ~Shinken Ranbu Sai 2022~" before returning to the main story of Toumyu in the "Musical Touken Ranbu ~Michi Oku Hitotsu no Hachisu~".

Much to everyone's joy, the "Musical Touken Ranbu ~Michi Oku Hitotsu no Hachisu~" was performed successfully until the end with the whole cast intact and no cancellations.

And, during the grand finale performance, this was Ryuji's curtain call comment.

Masters, thank you for attending today! And, to the masters who are inside, inside the box? To the masters who are on the other side of the box, thank you for supporting and cheering us on. It was really fun. See, there was a bright future waiting, right? Thank you very much for loving this citadel. As for me, well, I have no intention of saying farewell. As long as you need me, I will al~ways be here. That's why, I'm counting on your support from now on too. See you~

During the "Musical Touken Ranbu ~Iwainojuku Ranbu Ongyaku Sai~", the clip of Ryuji saying, "See, there is a bright future waiting, right?" was played with a snippet of "Hogiuta" to close the performance.

BONUS

As mentioned, Ryuji also participated in the "Musical Touken Ranbu 5th Anniversary ~Kotobuki Ranbu Ongyoku Sai~", which was performed during COVID-19 when restrictions to combat the pandemic were still in place.

It was during this time that Ryuji added the adlib line in "Kemono" after the lyric "お前の声が 明日を照らす" (Translation: "Your voices will shine a light on tomorrow").

The line he added was, "上げろう!" (Translation: "Raise it [your voices]!").

And, in the grand finale performance, he changed it to, "届け!" (Translation: "Reach them [the fans]!").

Due to the restrictions of COVID-19, cheering and any form of vocal support were not allowed. Thus, these lines carried the meaning and the hope that the voices of the Touken Danshi would still reach the fans.

During the original live stream for this performance, it ended up becoming a really sweet moment as fans used the official hashtag to respond with words like, "We can hear you!" and "Your voices have reached us!".

Torigoe Yuki (playing Kashuu Kiyomitsu's partner, Yamatonokami Yasusada) would carry on what Ryuji had started, changing the line to "騒げ!" (Translation: "Make some noise!") in subsequent performances of the song.

And, during the "Musical Touken Ranbu ~Iwainojuku Ranbu Ongyaku Sai~", it would lead us to this moment:

•So basically I would say that my idea is pretty much: "pretend" that I am Mr.Exile and make another High&Low with now all of the cast from the first one until High&Low the worst X being part of it. However, I want a new cast as well (in this case for now: Ryusei from Ballistik Boyz, Ryushin from Psychic Fever, the Twins Masa from Ballistik Boyz and Weesa from Psychic Fever, Ryuji from J Soul Brothers, both Ghee and Hiroto from Wolf Howl Harmony...); All I know for now is that, I want that the 2Ryu (Ryusei and Ryushin) duo and the Twins Masa and Weesa, well I want to put them together in one of the schools of the 3 school alliance, but like 2Ryu in one school and the Twins in the other. But neither of them will be part of Senomon High, also the 4 of them will be 2nd year students, and best friends with the 2nd year students from the other high schools including Oya High, Suzuran, Housen, etc.

⭐️I don't remember if I said that already or not but I also want the 4 of them to be leaders/heads of the 2nd year students from the school that their characters study alongside their dynamic duo let's say, for example Masa and his twin Weesa will be the heads/leaders of the 2nd year students from whatever school their characters will attend, does that make sense? And same with Ryusei and Ryushin.

💎And everyone that will be back and etc will be friends and getting along, including the Kuryu Group members + Mighty Warriors. And something funny is that Ranmaru will be Senomon's principal, and Kidra will be working for Chanson Group that is the true enemy.

👑So here is the thing in my AO3 fic, when ØMI asked Ryusei which school he wanted to attend he answered Ebara High. Then ØMI asked the same question to Masa and he said "Probably Kama High I guess..., maybe just to be part of the same one as Itsuki-San I guess". But I made a poll asking which school would be matching with them both it was a tie so I had to do the poll again to de decide and see.

%>Side Note: Kama High (at least in my point of view) is the most psycho school among the 3 of the 3 school alliance.

🍷I was thinking that Ryuji's character could be like Koo is to Rocky (White Rascals), but Ryuji's bios could be the singer HYDE and their gang could be called Black Rascals. So neither of Ryusei's, Ryushin's, Masa's, Weesa's, Ryuji's, HYDE's, etc's characters don't have any names yet; And the Black Rascals would help the White Rascals and HYDE's character is Rocky's friend since they were in kindergarten.

🐺About WOLF HOWL HARMONY boys: Their characters won't have names either however Ghee's character will start with the letter "K" for sure, but Hiroto's character I don't know yet which name I will put. Anyways, they will be also 2nd year students as well, attending Senomon High and and both will be heads/leaders of both 2nd and 1st year students. Plus, Ghee will play Ryoki's younger brother, and Ghee will also 'be the head' of the 3rd year students alongside his older brother which is Ryoki's character.

⚔️And not just that, also: both Ghee and Ryusei "will have some lines in Portuguese with one another"; Ghee's character will be part of the Mighry Warriors and also head of Amagai Family/Kuryu Group with Ryu, that is Taichi's character.

🤔Would the following couples be accepted?

a) Masa + Ryusei (High&Low universe fic)

b) Weesa + Ryushin ("")

c) Ghee + Hiroto ("")

d) Elly + ØMI (not High&Low fic because I already shipp Ice with Ryu which is Taichi's character and Hiroto with Smoky, and even though he is no longer with us, Hiroto is "widow". So Elly and ØMI would be a couple off the High&Low fic, more like in the Masa + Ryusei fic)

🧡So long story short: basically a continuation story of the High&Low universe, I got the idea from my fic I wrote about Ryusei and Masa.

Hello! Who is your favourite OC and what's a fact about them that you haven't shared before?

Hi there! Thanks for the ask!

It's soooo hard to choose just one OC, but the one who has been on my mind the most lately is Ryuji, a hitman in the Agni Kai Triad who just happened to be Yasuko Sato's childhood sweetheart.

A fact I never shared about Ryuji is that his motivation for joining the triad was to retire his mother, whose health was deteriorating because of the long hours she had to work at the textile factory. His goal was to buy his mom a nice townhouse in Harmony Point and give her enough money to live a life of ease. Later, he also wanted to provide for Yasuko, who worked multiple jobs to put herself through university, but it never happened because she met Hiroshi just as Ryuji was gaining power and influence within the triad.

Hi I'm a new fan of The Brow Beat and absolutely fell in love with 21 grams, but there are two versions of it and i found youtube comments saying they're glad that Ryuji chose to keep the 404 ver. Is there anything starkly different with both versions or is it just album versions? Thank you in advance, your posts have been very helpful in giving me more insights on The Brow Beat and Ryuji.

If you compare the lyrics, the main parts of the song (ie. the rap and sung parts) are the same, but the spoken parts are different.

(Putting the rest of my response under the cut because of trigger warnings for death and suicide.)

The title of the song "21 Grams" refers to the weight of the human soul (taken from the "21 Grams Experiment"). The song paints the darkest parts of Ryuji's heart, and the themes of both versions are the same: both songs deal with the emotions that lead to suicide and encourage people to overcome such feelings and survive beyond them.

However, the way the lyrics express this theme in both versions are completely different.

The lyrics for the original version of "21 Grams" focus on the intense pain that drive people to suicide and the struggle of fighting against it. Meanwhile, the lyrics for "21 Grams (404 ver.)" focus on the circumstances that might lead to suicide with words of encouragement to fight back and overcome these circumstances.

The original version of the song was so emotionally fraught that even The Brow Beat's record label at the time (Pony Canyon) was against Ryuji releasing the song, but thanks to HAKUEI-san, we were given the opportunity to have this version of the song before Ryuji, himself, felt that it was too dark to sing at live concerts and changed the lyrics to the ones used in "21 Grams (404 ver.)".

To give a bit of context, Ryuji wrote "21 Grams" because he, himself, had actually gone through a period of time in his life when he experienced such emotions, and wanted to write a song to support people who shared the same pain, in the way that songs with such themes helped him during his dark times.

Ryuji has also experienced the suicide of a close friend; an experience he has expressed in "Suiren" and "Tourou Nagashi" (which are two sides of the same coin).

REAL⇔FAKE Episode 4: Final (summary)

So... this is it, huh! I feel like this could’ve had a potential, considering that they gave all the members, as well as Akane and Moriya, some pretty nice backstories to work with. Oh well! It’s kinda sad that it ended so quick, but there’s still the bonus scenes from the DVD to look forward to so I guess we should just wait for it!

Anyway, here’s my attempt at an episode summary under the cut! Well actually, it’s impossible to summarize it ‘cause there’s a lot of details squeezed in here ugh >< Still, I tried! I hope it’s comprehensible, at least!

Continuing from the previous episode, President Sawakida and Rin arrive at Akane's old apartment. Waiting for them is Kakeru, who turns out to be working together with Rin and deliberately led Sawakida to that apartment. He confronts Sawakida, accusing him of murdering Akane, and asks him if he knew Kaburagi Souma.

Flashback (student Akane): Akane comes home from school and finds his brother collapsed in the chair, with a glass of water and suspicious pills strewn around the table. Near him, a note reads: "I'm sorry Akane"

Back to present time, Kakeru asks Sawakida: “You knew his brother, didn’t you?”

Flashback (utahime Akane): Akane receives an email containing the demo track for Stellar CROWNS’s debut song. As he was listening to it, he realizes something, and dashes towards President Sawakida’s office. Finding it empty, he looks through the documents on his table until he finds a music composition notebook which belonged to his brother, Souma. Sawakida suddenly enters and catches him in the act, and a confrontation ensues between them. Akane tries to make Sawakida admit that he plagiarized his brother’s song, but he denies it the whole time. He also put the composition notebook in his safe. When Akane threatens to sue, Sawakida says, “You try something like that, and I’ll crush you. For now, I’ll give you time to cool your head.” Akane doesn’t seem to back out, so Sawakida says, “I’ll give you one day to make a decision: choose to live on in this world... or choose death. It’s up to you.” With a mocking laugh, Sawakida leaves.

Back to the present time. Sawakida still denies the plagiarism, so Kakeru shows him more evidence: Souma’s laptop and music sheets filled with his handwriting. The laptop turned out to be the very same one that Rin had his detective acquaintance investigate, and contains email exchanges between Akane’s brother and Sawakida.

Still, Sawakida denies everything that Kakeru accuses him of. To this, Kakeru tells him that he saw Akane kill himself right in front of his eyes, being unable to forgive himself for his brother’s death. He pleads with Sawakida to admit the truth, if he still has any shred of conscience left. However, Sawakida remains unmoved and even utters some mocking words, saying that it was Akane’s choice to kill himself. Kakeru gives up and turns to gather the evidence.

Suddenly, Sawakida leaps from his chair and wrestles the evidence away from Kakeru and managed to push both Kakeru and Rin away. As he was about to go out, Moriya enters the room and stops him right on his tracks, snatching the evidence away from his hands. Sawakida was surprised at his appearance there in all places, but he was in for a bigger surprise: Akane came along with him, alive and well.

Sawakida turns to Kakeru, who tells him that he lied about Akane committing suicide to make Sawakida confess his sins. Moriya then shows him the composition notebook that Akane found in Sawakida’s office. Moriya reveals that he was the one who took his keys while the chaos was happening at the press conference. With the concrete evidence shoved at his face, Sawakida finally admits stealing Souma’s work. However he still acts tough, saying that Akane will never get anywhere without him and his company. He also tells them that he’ll never be caught that easily.

Moriya then reveals one final card up their sleeves: all around the room were hidden cameras that captured everything that happened up until now. Sawakida is a bit surprised, but regained composure immediately, telling them that they won’t be able to use the hidden camera footage as evidence. Akane says that it doesn’t matter, as long as the public knows about about him stealing the composition from Souma. Kakeru adds, “With that, you’ll be ruined in the public’s eyes.”

Flashback (a couple of weeks ago, Akane’s old apartment): Akane was about to take a large number of pills when Kakeru burst into the room and slapped them away from his hand. Akane was surprised to see him there, and Kakeru reminded him that Akane told him about this place before. Akane tells him everything, and Kakeru reproached him, saying that what he should do is get his brother’s song back. He also offered his cooperation.

Flashback (Stellar CROWNS house): Kakeru gathers all the members in the lounge. He got down on his knees and apologizes for getting them involved. Yuusuke got angry at him for not telling him and in turn, Kakeru said that he’ll probably do something reckless if he knew, not considering his weak body. Kakeru lowers his head to the ground asking them for their cooperation, and Yuusuke joins him. Seeing their resolve, the rest of the members agree.

Flashback (episode 3, Moriya and Kakeru, studio): After Moriya tells Kakeru that he and Akane were best friends, he dialled someone’s number on the phone and handed it to Moriya, saying that he has a favor to ask. On the other end of the line was Akane, who tells him to trust Kakeru.

Flashback (episode 3, press conference): Kakeru revealing that Akane is alive in front of the reporters was all part of the plan.

Back to present time: Akane thanks Kakeru and Rin (and the rest of Stellar CROWNS). Kakeru says, “It’s finally over, huh?��� to which Akane replies, “No. This is where it begins... all thanks to everyone.”

Akane holds a press conference to reveal himself to the public once more. He apologizes for his disappearance, and asks the fans to continue supporting Stellar CROWNS and Suzuki Kakeru who took his place during his absence. He also says that he’ll continue being a singer, and asks for everyone’s continued support as well.

Cut to 2chan Vchan, where people are talking about Sawakida stealing Souma’s song, and saying that he’s now ruined.

Akane walks along a riverbank, and finds Moriya there. Akane still blames himself, saying that he hasn’t done anything for his brother. Moriya reproaches him, saying that Akane blaming himself isn’t what his brother wants, and goes on to encourage Akane. Akane thanks him, but Moriya looked away, asking Akane why he didn’t rely on him. Akane tells him that he didn’t want to be a burden to him, now that he has finally become a director and besides, he still hadn’t fulfilled his promise.

Back to the Stellar CROWNS house: Kakeru gathers the members once again, telling them that he’ll withdraw from the group now that he has fulfilled his true motive. Yuusuke playfully chides him, reminding him of Akane’s words during the press conference. The rest of the members chime in as well. With that, Kakeru rejoins the group and they make a toast (with orange juice again).

I thought some of the responses to this question were pretty interesting, so I decided to put them all together in one post www

Q: Other than the character you play, who is your favourite character in Touken Ranbu ONLINE?

Ryuji: Kogitsunemaru. He gets an S grade from me in terms of both appearance & personality, and he gives me a great feeling. If I was a girl, I’d want to be with Kogitsunemaru.

Tori: Urashima Kotetsu. I love how he gives off the vibe of a cheerful enthusiastic kid, and his appearance is great too.

Kensuke: Jiroutachi. Man, that guy is amazing. He holds a sake bottle in one hand, but in battle he can still send three bodies flying at once! Even the way he talks interests me.

Imarin: Tsurumaru Kuninaga. I think his personality is unique & cool. I set him as a leader pretty often when I’m playing the game.

Shou: Recently, it’s Kashuu Kiyomitsu. I’ve been using Kashuu ever since I picked him as my starter. He’s amazingly charming. I think that depending on how you look at it, he can be a character with a lot of sex appeal.

Ogotan: Somehow, it’s Tsurumaru Kuninaga!

i listened to too much synthwave while doing my horrible tasks today so it got me thinking about my yakuza cyberpunk au concept which i dont think ive ever posted about

(yes the jacket is full-length/down to the ankles, i just had to cut off the picture bc this drawing is from 2019 and the proportions are WACK)

so basically majima has cybernetic implants shimano wanted him to get for both his eye and also all the areas where his tattoo covers. i havent fully fleshed out the ideas but obviously the eye thing can enable him to zoom in and see infrared or whatever. also I think that the back piece maybe has like 2 “snakes”/metal tentacle things that can come OUT of it as though the snakes from his tattoo were coming alive. (but theyre robot parts. idk if im im explaining any sense im so tired)

so the implants are really heavy duty impressive ones, maybe even experimental, so his body is always rejecting them which is why the places where its attached to his human flesh look hideously irritated and infected. maybe you can see that better in this pic a little idk.

also he has a cybernetic Bat which is just a regular Bat but it has some blinking lights on it for the AestheticTM. (just kidding it probably doubles as a tazer or something idk)

goda ryuji is obviously just how he is in dead souls haha.

and the new ideas i had today were that kadokura is a cybernetics developed/manufacturer (Rachi Future Solutions or something lollll), and when he recruits sato into becoming a Cyber Hitman (what is a hitman called in a cyberpunk world.. idk) sato doesnt get a gun arm or anything but he does get some modifications done to improve his already-supernatural bodily steadiness, probably at least one cybernetic eye etc., and he DOES get a chip put in his brain that can relay him information and stuff but also (unbenoknwst to sato) allows kadokura to monitor him at all times, see through his eyes etc., and even to manipulate and shut down certain emotions ! *FROZEN ROAR SPOILERS* so in this au sato is more of a victim, he ilterally couldnt feel remorse for his crimes, remorse was turned off !!!!!

but then when he goes to abashiri the chip is Out Of Range or Not Getting Reception or something! so when sato  meets ok*dera (who is Of Course does a bit of a mechanic on the side and can do really rough and ready cybernetics stuff—nothing like the sleek Rachi Future Solutions tech, its clunky and made up of old parts and so on but it gets the job done) suddenly satos brain starts to heal a little and oh no why doesnt he want to complete his mission ????

and probably at the end of the story okduera like gives sato a chip he had in HIS brain so even the Japan Central Computer or whatever the inevitably fascist surveillance state government has would read sato as ok*dera. (though how this helps given that ok*dera is wanted dead by the mob is an open question, as it is in canon..)

also i think that instead of having the mountain village vs city be like “this village people DONT have cybernetics, theyre ACTUALLY human” its more about tech sovereignty! like the mountain village is better because the cybernetics they use are homegrown and repairable and powered by their own code, not run by giant evil corporations who control them from afar and block out every good memory youve ever had or whatever

also yama-oroshi is obviously a giant mecha bear
