Call for International Week of Solidarity with #AnarchistPrisoners
"Extreme right, conservative and authoritarian politics are increasing all around the world. Some use it to start Wars and kill thousands of people, some build fences and guard what they think is their property and others use it to arm up in the digital world. Surveillance is increased and the states are leaping more and more into our private spaces, analyzing our private conversations and collecting data about us with a depth of detail we could never have imagined. The tools of the states to crush resistance, crush even the idea of fighting the system, are sharpened with every minute. Many anarchists, anti-authoritarians, environmental activists, and antifascist around the world face repression because acting anonymous in a digitalized world is as difficult as never before.
With all the obstacles put into our way during the struggle for a better world, anarchist ideas and values remain important. In times of crisis methods of collective organizing, mutual aid and the principle of solidarity start to shine. The system will fall apart and we should get ready to take back a world that was stolen by companies, yacht owners and the war industry."

#AbolishPrisons
“The prison has become a black hole into which the detritus of contemporary capitalism is deposited. Mass imprisonment generates profits as it devours social wealth, and thus it tends to reproduce the very conditions that lead people to prison. There are thus real and often quite complicated connections between the deindustrialization of the economy—a process that reached its peak during the 1980s—and the rise of mass imprisonment, which also began to spiral during the Reagan-Bush era. However, the demand for more prisons was represented to the public in simplistic terms. More prisons were needed because there was more crime. Yet many scholars have demonstrated that by the time the prison construction boom began, official crime statistics were already falling.” ― Angela Y. Davis, Are Prisons Obsolete?

I fully respect this perspective and consider it more correct than anyone who does any variation of hand waving away the horror of the system as is. I'm not asking you to have answers, but I have yet to see anyone who comes forward with a serious proposal for what to do instead of prisons. #AbolishPrison isn't an answer, and the complete disregard that many seem to have about the consequences of apparently abolishing the justice system is very concerning. Especially with the risk of a potential overturning of fundamentals disturbing our pretty fragile and under performing justice system.
*
What is a practicable alternative? Do we just need to reset the entire culture of criminal confinement? Destroy all the prisons, and hire architects to design like lifestyle environments for rehabilitation, and hire entirely different prison guards, and build in compassionate processes into the social dynamics?
Do we replace prison time with corporal punishment and the death penalty?
Do we rely on house arrest, social coercion, shame and access to institutions that are necessary for success?
Do we stop punishing murder and retaliation for murder systematically, and rely on feuds and revenge as mechanisms to manage violent interpersonal conflict? Do we build institutions that focus on managing these dynamics, with respected third parties to act as mediators and interventions?
There's a big difference between recognizing that prisons are horrifying and resolving on a viable alternative that we can all understand well enough and clearly enough to begin the path dependence jump to transition there, and trust in the viability of the destination.
None of the alternatives I can think of and blurb sound within reach as a practical option.
Criminal Justice Reform definitely needs to happen, but there are some people who in a tribal context would absolutely get themselves killed, by being awful. We protect them, with the principle of do no murder.
Instead we put people through a judicial process, and try and regulate everyone's behavior fairly, and by doing so ensure a society where the average person doesn't need to fear violent encounter, as an expected part of life that will happen multiple times in a lifetime, and requires the development of self defense skills.
I am not sure this is better than killing assholes, losing some heroic people who attempt to kill assholes, and then figuring out how to moderate the feuds that result.
I think such a system could work, in the modern day, (There's plenty of ancestral prescedence) but that is a century scale project, and would require finding an entire city-state scale domain where everyone would be willing to have a Philosopher king type visionary leader to manage the cultural transition to this kind of radically different approach to the human condition.
Moreover, this is not the kind of world that most default thinking #AbolishPrison people seem to advocate for. Like, you have to be strongly 2A and supportive of self defense rights and citizen responsibility. Along with like a completely different view on domestic violence.
I have no idea what abolishing prison means in a serious sense other than wildly over dramatic way of memeing our way into criminal justice reform, which doesn't work for me because it makes the argument too insane for the other side to take it seriously.
If you want an interesting and good book that touches on vague parts of this without being a part of it. I really like Tyson Yunkaporta's Sand Talk. It's not about prison reform, I've yet to read a book on that topic, because I've yet to meet anyone who's presented a serious proposal for replacing prison while voyaging on social media. But it does cover how Aboriginal culture dealt and deals with conflict and the author is absolutely a deep soul.
You know if i could read about the USA prison system without having extremely bad effects on my mental state, I would post a lot more stuff about prison abolition, because it feels like any rational person who knew about it would conclude that we live under a monstrous authoritarian regime, and the fact that so few people discuss it feels like some kind of surreal nightmare.
