Wow Birthday Whump Day 12: Magic exhaustion / Collapsed / "So tired..."
Featuring our favorite t4t gay idiots and a location that was mentioned all of one (1) times
Aaron, Kai, and Phoenix belong to @/pigeonwhumps
Content: team fluff, comfort, fainting, romancey vibes, food ment.
Joseph opened the door to Cornico’s Pizza, taking in the familiar smell and relaxing atmosphere as he wound around the many full tables back to the corner booth where Kai, Aaron, and Phoenix were sitting, snacking on some garlic knots.
“Hey guys,” he said, sliding into the seat next to Aaron, smiling at the soda they’d gotten him. “Eric says sorry, last minute review meeting popped up.”
Kai groaned a little, nodding.“Those are the worst. Tell him I said good luck.”
“I will.” He turned to Phoenix, who was finishing a garlic knot. “How was your day?”
“It was good!” They reached for another, eyes flickering up to Kai to make sure it was okay. He nodded, mouth full of bread. “We did sparing. Kai won against Lian. A lot.” They rubbed at their wrists, then smiled. “It was fun.”
“I’m glad.” He glanced over at Aaron, noting the tired look in his eyes and the droop in his posture. “You doin’ alright?”
“Just a long day.” He rolled his neck out, bones cracking with the movement. “Nothing some more bread and cheese can’t fix.”
“Second that.” Kai flipped open his menu, quickly scanning through it. “What’re we thinking?”
“I could split a veggie with Phoenix and you two could do whatever?” They sighed, index finger digging into their thumb’s fingernail.
“That sounds good.” Joseph opened his menu, looking over the options. “Pepperoni, sausage and cheese?”
Kai nodded. “Absolutely.” He waved the server over, and they quickly placed their orders.
They fell back into an easy conversation while they waited for their food, comfortably bouncing back and forth between topics. Phoenix slowly started to talk more, interjecting with their own side stories and anecdotes. It was nice to see them coming out of their shell a little, and Joseph couldn’t help but smile.
Still, Aaron’s silence made him uneasy. Joseph could see the exhaustion written on him plainly. His shift had obviously been more taxing than normal. He placed a comforting hand on their shoulder, squeezing it a little bit. Aaron leaned into it, a quiet thank you for the gesture.
Suddenly, his brow creased, facial expression turning frantic. “You okay, Aaron?”
They mumbled something inaudible, hands pawing at his shoulders like they were trying to climb over him. “Aaron, what’s wrong?”
“I needa lay down,” he repeated, a little more clearly.
The words spurred Joseph into action, and he tried to move so Aaron could get out, but it was too late. Their eyes slid closed as they collapsed, body pitching forward and slamming into Joseph’s chest.
“Aaron!” Phoenix shouted before immediately sinking in on themselves, eyes wide with concern.
Joseph wrapped his arms around Aaron’s slack body, supporting his head while he got them out of the booth and onto the ground. “You with me?” His fingers dug into Aaron’s shoulders as he shook them awake.
His eyes flickered up to Kai, about to order him to call for help, when Aaron produced a sleepy groan. “That hurts…” They tried to push his arms away, but they lacked the coordination and the strength necessary to do so. “Wha’ happened?”
“You passed out.”
“Oh, sorry.” They were silent for a second. “Didn’t think the healing hangover was this bad.”
Joseph hummed, unbelieving. “Sure.”
They were still for a moment, eyes locked together, and one could only imagine the silent conversation that passed between. Slowly, Aaron tried to sit up, fighting through the dizziness. He didn’t even get halfway up before Joseph had to steady him. “Nope, you’re laying back down.”
Aaron huffed. “The server is coming with our food. I don’t want to be in the way.”
“You’re not in the way. There's plenty of space.” He reached for their hand. “We can try again after five minutes?”
“But I’m hungry,” they grumbled wearily.
Joseph was about to respond but Kai got there first. “Listen to the medic!” He said, and Joseph followed it up with a look.
“Alright, I will.” They threw their hands up in surrender. He squeezed Joseph’s hand. “Will you walk me home?”
He tried to ignore the heat rushing to his cheeks. “Yeah. Always.”

Incorrect quotes – Aaron and Joseph
(plus a bonus Santhiya and Phoenix bc the quote was too perfect for them to lose but I don't want to post it separately)
(Joseph belongs to @i-eat-worlds)
Aaron: You’re overthinking this.
Joseph: You don’t know the appropriate level of thinking, Aaron. What if I’m underthinking?
_
Joseph: We should be partners.
Aaron: You mean like, partners in crime?
Joseph: Yeah... that’s precisely what I meant.
_
Joseph: I think I just figured something out. I got to go.
Aaron: Aren't you forgetting something?
Joseph: Uuh...*hesitantly kisses Aaron's forehead before running out.*
Aaron: No, pay your bill! Damn, who raised you?
_
Aaron: I don't need to go to bed. I'm not tired, I'll be fine.
Joseph: But, darling, I'll be so lonely without you. Come curl up in my arms so I can feel whole again.
Aaron: O-oh. Well. Are you trying to seduce me into healthy sleeping patterns??
Joseph: Is it working?
_
Aaron: We’re getting married, bitches!
Joseph: And we're about to make it everybody else's problem.
_
Aaron: Stop doing that.
Joseph: Stop doing what?
Aaron: Saying things that make me wanna kiss the hell out of you.
_
Aaron: Okay, truth or dare?
Joseph: Truth
Aaron: How many hours have you slept this week?
Joseph:
Joseph: ...Dare
Aaron: Go to bed.
Joseph: I don’t like this game.
_
Aaron, tending to Joseph's wounds: How would you rate your pain?
Joseph: Zero stars. Would NOT recommend.
_
Aaron: You're the love of my life and my best friend, I would do anything for you.
Joseph: I want you to eat three meals a day and have a decent sleep schedule.
Aaron: Absolutely not.
_
And a bonus:
Phoenix: Name a more iconic duo than my crippling fear of abandonment and my anxiety. I'll wait.
Santhiya: You and me!!!
Phoenix, tearing up: Okay.

Aaron fumbled with the keys to his apartment, tired hands refusing to cooperate. His shift had been absolutely miserable, a never ending twelve hour affair that had started bad and gotten worse. As a cherry on top, the healing hangover had hit them like a train, and now he couldn’t even open his own damn door.
This internship was kicking their ass.
After seven or eight attempts, he finally got the key in. When he pushed the door open, he was greeted by the delightful aroma of food cooking.
“Joseph?” he called as he kicked his shoes off and dropped his bag by the door. They turned the corner to find their roomate standing at the stove, stirring a large pot of soup. “I thought it was my turn to cook.”
“It is.” He set the spoon down. “Tough shift?”
“Yeah. Did not fucking stop.” Aaron sighed, scrubbing his face with his hands. “What do you need help with?”
“Oh, don’t worry about it. It’s mostly done.” He reached up to get two bowls out of the cabinet.
“You sure?” Aaron stepped forward, grabbing the counter to support himself as his vision swirled. “I can help.”
“You look like you’ve been run over by a train, man.” Joseph sounded annoyed. He was also right.
Aaron’s head was spinning and his whole body was sore. The bags under his eyes were probably the size of backpacks and he still smelled like bodily fluids and misery. His hands were still shaky from the ungodly amount of caffeine and adrenaline he had in his system.
“Yeah…”
“Why don’t you go take a shower, change into something that’s not scrubs, and then we’ll eat.” He turned the stove heat to “low.”
“Probably a good idea.” It sounded amazing, actually.
“Rest, man. You need it.”
“I will, you don’t need to bug me.” Aaron steadied himself by gripping the wall as he slowly walked to the bathroom.
Joseph hummed. “Good.” There was a beat of silence. “I’m glad you had a happy rst full moon.”
“So fun,” he sighed, giving him a look. “Why would you do those willingly?”
“I’m a little crazy,” he shrugged. “Go shower.”
“Yeah, working on it.” He tried to blink the black dots out of his vision.
Aaron managed to drag himself into the bathroom and get sat down on the floor before the spots closed in and he slumped over, unconscious.
***
Joseph was a little surprised that he hadn’t heard the shower start yet. The nerves had started to well in his gut, and they would not go away. His brain was moving at a million miles an hour and ugg…Why did his brain have to be like this?
Mainly just to shut the never ending tirade of “what if something happened” up, he knocked on the door. “You good in there?” he called.
No response.
“Aaron?” He pressed his ear against the door.
Nothing.
“Aaron!”
Silence.
He waited for a brief second, hand frozen on the doorknob.
“I’m coming in. Hope you're clothed.”
Aaron was slumped over on his side, eyes half open. Thankfully, they were breathing, chest rising and falling slowly. They were also, notably, clothed.
“Oh, hey.” Their voice was whisper quiet. “Hey, ‘Seph.”
“So the shower didn’t work out?” He knelt down by their head.
“No.”
“Couch?”
“Yes please.”
“Need my help to get there?”
“Yeah.”
Aaron slowly extended their arms towards him. Slowly, they pushed themselves to standing, relying on him for support. Joseph pulled him in close, holding his body weight up as they stumbled down the hallway.
“Sorry ‘bout the soup,” he mumbled into Joseph’s shoulder.
“It’s okay.” Very, carefully, he set Aaron down on the couch.
“But it’ll be cold,” his head lazily rolled to the side.
“We own a microwave, ya know,” he smiled as he pulled a thick, fuzzy, blanket over their body.
“Oh…yeah.”
“Rest up.”
That wasn’t going to be hard for them. Aaron’s eyes drifted closed almost immediately, and he dropped into a dreamless sleep.

WoW's birthday event: day 9: aftermath of rescue | sickness | "you're burning up"
(does a hostage exchange count as a rescue? I say yes, for the purpose of this)
A day or two after Phoenix waking up in the medbay and the revelations that followed, they ask Joseph to check on Aaron (and by extension, the rest of their team).
Joseph belongs to @i-eat-worlds
1k
CWs: low self-esteem, mentioned past abuse, exhaustion, caffeine, self-neglect
Joseph knocks on the door to Phoenix's flat.
He almost hopes no-one answers and he'll have to use Santhiya's key. Then there's a chance they'll be asleep already.
No such luck.
Kai answers the door. Joseph can tell immediately why Phoenix was worried, even if it was only Aaron they mentioned – he's a mess. Clothes and hair rumpled, swaying slightly, brow furrowed in confusion.
"Joseph? This isn't INSUPA."
"I was visiting Phoenix, and they–"
"Are they okay?" asks Kai immediately, looking ready to run at the slightest hint of a 'no'. "What's wrong, what happened?"
"Nothing's wrong, calm down." Kai's shoulders drop and Joseph bites back a surge of anger. What did Abbie do to make Phoenix think this man could hate them?
"Then what–"
"As I said, I was visiting Phoenix, and they asked me to check up on you. Apparently the bags under Aaron's eyes look tattooed on?"
Actually, what Phoenix had done was apologise for being an inconvenience but could he please check up on Aaron? Joseph had felt sick hearing the fear there, like Joseph would do something to them for asking.
Kai sighs, judging the door further open. "Come in."
Joseph slips inside and follows Kai into the living room.
Morfydd and Lian are slumped on the floor, propped up by the couch, and Aaron is perched on the coffee table, looking two seconds from drifting off and falling, under-eye bags true to Phoenix's word. Morfydd winces at their footsteps. A selection of empty caffeine and sugar drinks and snacks surround them all, spread out around a sugar paper epicentre. Lian appears to have been snacking from a bag of whole coffee beans.
Santhiya's presumably still asleep with Phoenix in the medical bay, Phoenix themself talking to Vic about advocacy roles after she took one up for them during their interview with management (which has caused at least one panic attack so far, and which Joseph is still annoyed about). So at least no-one's unaccounted for.
"You all need to sleep."
Aaron shakes his head, taking a large gulp of coffee (which he doesn't even like. Joseph recognises this version of him from their course together). "There's more important things to do."
"What are you doing?" he asks curiously.
"Trying to work out why Phoenix thinks we'd hate them," mutters Lian morosely. "We don't know what we did, or how to fix it."
"How do they not know we value them for more than their powers and fighting?" adds Morfydd through clenched teeth.
"Because they can count on one hand the amount of people who have before." The room is dead silent. "If you slept, you'd work this out for yourselves. And I'm not taking you to medbay if you have a heart attack from all that caffeine, Lian."
Lian looks at him in surprise. That's fair. The others don't know him as well as Aaron does, don't know that he'd drop everything if that did happen.
"Joseph's lying," announces Aaron.
Joseph shrugs. "Maybe. But it's been over 24 hours since Phoenix woke, I suspect none of you have slept since before then, and I'm not going anywhere until you're asleep. Phoenix asked me to make sure you're okay, and I intend to do so."
"Okay, okay, you've made your point," mutters Lian. "Morfydd, shall we–"
They nod then wince. They seem to have got the idea, as Joseph helps them into their chair. They wheel down the corridor, slowly, Lian holding on, and leave the chair outside whichever one of them's bedroom it is.
Once they're safely inside, Joseph turns to Aaron. "Come on."
He shakes his head. "I need to go on my shift soon. I'll be fine."
Joseph snatches the bag of dissolvable HAL-issued stimulants out of his pocket and transfers them to his own.
"Don't you dare. Phoenix will be better off for you getting some rest, and so will everyone else. I'll take your shift."
"But–"
"No. I'm taking your shift."
"At least let me have a bleep?"
"Not until you've had at least a few hours of uninterrupted sleep."
Joseph stares them down until they sigh. "You're not going to let this go, are you?"
"Nope."
Aaron nods, and holds out an arm to let Joseph help them down off the table. He pulls it around his shoulders as soon as they've slid off, stopping them from falling completely.
They're warm to hold. His own heart skips a beat. He has no idea which is the spare room, if any, so he just leads them into a random empty one. Aaron doesn't protest.
Once Aaron is sitting on the bed, they seem to come back to themself and say urgently, "They didn't think to come to me when they thought Kai would kick them out. They don't think any better of me. What if they think I've abandoned them because I let you take my shift?"
"It was specifically you Phoenix asked me to check up on. They won't think you abandoned them."
"Me?"
"You're the only one they've been able to see how bad you're getting."
"Oh."
Joseph pulls him into a hug. "Come on. Sleep. Phoenix will still be there when you wake up."
Aaron nods sleepily, and Joseph helps him under the duvet. He extracts his arm regretfully, and closes the door behind him with a little snick.
It turns out he could've stayed longer, because once he returns to the living room he finds Kai already passed out on the sofa.
Joseph smiles and shakes his head as he drapes a blanket over him. He could wake him, tell him about management probably coming round for their side of the story soon, but he doesn't. Kai won't go back to sleep, especially after finding out they visited Phoenix. He scoops up the mess instead, at least wanting to make the place presentable. The sugar paper – plans to make make Phoenix realise they're valued, apparently – he stacks and covers up, not wanting anyone outside of the team to see, and the caffeine remains he dumps in the kitchen, grinning at Phoenix's moulded Grogu mug on the counter.
And now it's time to return to HAL's medbay. No-one's waking anytime soon. He hopes Phoenix realises their team loves them soon, because it's so painfully obvious to everyone else that they do.

Wow Birthday Whump Day 3: Crying / Parting Words Regret / "Why...?"
Aaroseph nightmare deliciousness!
Contents: past character death, grief, panic and anxiety
Someone’s missing.
Joseph can’t place who it is, but the ache is deep in his chest and his veins are screaming with urgency. There are whispers swirling around him, screaming at him to move, to run, but he can’t go anywhere.
He’s stuck.
The panic is about to boil over, he can feel it coming, rising ever high by the second.
“Joseph!”
Everything shaders, cracks splintering across his mind, and he’s back there, inside a crumpled building, Pat laying in his arms.
Pat.
“I don’t wanna die,” she begs, like she did, like she always does, like she always will, again and again and again.
The blood is sticky on his fingers and it smells awful. It’s everywhere, on her and on him. There’s a thousand things he should be doing but he can’t make his arms move. She’s dying and he can’t even look away.
“Joseph! Wake up!”
She gasps, hands clawing at his immobile arms, tears welling in her eyes and in his. Her expression is frenzied as she fights to keep living.
She’s losing.
She’s dying.
“Shhh, Pat, it’s alright, I’ve got you.”
He’s lying. He’s lying. He's lying.
“C’mon Joseph, wake up!”
The dream faded, the smell of blood replaced by sweat and the feeling of Pat in his arms replaced by the feeling of hands on his shoulders. Blindly, he lashed out a hand, swinging at whoever was holding him down.
“Woah, Joseph.”
It was only after that he realized who it was.
Aaron.
His face was cast in shadow by the dim light of the lamp, brow furrowed with concern. “You with me now, Jo?”
“Yeah,” he wiped the tears away from his eyes while he tried to slow his breathing down. “Did I wake you up? Sorry.”
“It’s alright.” Aaron plopped down on the side of the bed, removing their hand from his shoulder.
“I’m sorry.” He sat up slowly, the sweat soaked sheets sticking to his back. “Really, it’s okay.” The darkness hid the tears burning his eyes.
An awkward beat of silence passed between them. “You sure?”
“Yeah, it’s just…” He took a deep breath. “It’s been a while since I’ve had one that bad.”
Aaron reached out and comfortingly squeezed his hand. “You wanna talk about it?”
“No, not really.” He slouched, a wave of exhaustion washing over him. Nobody was dying. He was fine. Aaron was fine. No one was going to die. “Thank you though.”
“No problem.” Aaron patted his shoulder. “If you ever want to..”
“I will.” Joseph nodded solemnly. He laid back down in bed, watching as they walked away and gently closed the door behind them.
His heart still ached, but it was softened by the left over sensation that Aaron’s hand had left on his shoulder.
Everyone was safe.
No one was going to die.

Wow Birthday Whump Day 9: Aftermath of rescue / Sickness / “You’re burning up.”
Set in the aftermath of day 4. Aaroseph goodness
Content: sick whump, medical whump, comfort and caretaking, romancey vibes, medic caretaker
Joseph perked up at the sound of someone knocking at his door, the noise disturbing his hazy sleep. “Come in!” he called, voice hoarse.
The door cracked open, and Aaron stuck his head into the room. He squinted in the dim light. “How’re you holding up?”
Slowly, they approached the bed where he was resting. “I’m alright,” he shrugged, trying to ignore the tickle in the back of his throat. It didn’t work, and an attack of violent coughs erupted from his mouth. When he looked down, the inside of his elbow was covered in mucus.
Aaron reached out to get him a tissue before he could even ask, giving him a look the whole time. “You sure?”
“I’ve had pneumonia before. I’ll survive.” He drew in several careful breaths. “I assume Eric wants you to check, though?”
They nodded. “Yep. It’ll keep it quick.” He shifted off the bed, reaching for the bag he’d quietly set down when he entered. “How’s the shoulder?”
“Sore.” The dislocation really wasn't too bad, though. Nothing had been broken, and it had reduced easily enough. “I’ve been icing it, which helps.”
“Good.” Aaron clipped the oximeter to his finger, and Joseph fell silent.
The sound of velcro peeling away felt outrageously loud against the quietness of the room, and Aaron couldn’t help but feel like he was disturbing the peace as he wrapped the cuff around Joseph’s arm. He slid the bell of his stethoscope underneath the cuff, inflated it, then listened and watched while the needle fell.
“How’s the team?” Joseph said conversationally, watching them jot down the numbers.
“Pretty good. Phoenix is worried about you.” They slid the plastic cover onto the thermometer. “Open.”
Another awkward moment of quiet passed while they waited for the thermometer to beep. “They should come visit.”
“I’ll ask them about it.” Joseph watched as they tossed the cover, then put the thermometer away.
“Yeah.” They rubbed the bell in between their hands. “Can you face me?”
He hummed, sliding his feet over the edge of the bed and pulling his shirt up. Aaron’s fingers brushed against his skin as they pressed the lukewarm metal onto his chest. They worked their way down his front side, face carefully neutral, but Joseph’s face still felt warm. Maybe it was the fever.
“Alright, turn around for me,” they said gently.
“Breathe in,” they instructed, and he complied, exhaling and inhaling when they told him to. The bell was warmer on his back than it had been on front, and after the familiar sensation of it working its way down, it pulled away. For some reason, a train of shivers rolled up his spine. Out of habit more than anything, Aaron wrapped the stethoscope around his neck.
“So, give it to me straight, doc, am I gonna die?” Joseph joked, turning back around.
Aaron shot him a look, unamused. “It’s not as bad as it was. You’re on the upswing.” He smiled, sitting back down on the bed. “Have you been drinking water?”
“Yes, I promise.” He used his good hand to pull his shirt back down.
They narrowed their eyes. “I’ll get you a glass before I leave.”
Joseph watched as he gathered up the rest of his supplies, returning them to their proper homes inside his bag. They paused for a moment, then walked back over, hand reaching for Joseph’s. “I know you’ve heard this a million times-” he started, thumb rubbing circles on the top of his hand. “-but I’m so fucking glad the you’re okay.”
Their eyes locked together for a moment that felt like an eternity, and then Joseph pulled them into a hug. “I’m okay,” he whispered into their ear. “I’m going to be okay.”
They stayed like that for a long time, arms intertwined, chests pressed together, neither properly off nor on the bed. In the quiet of the room, they could hear the other breathing in their ear, slow and relaxed and absolutely blissful.
Maybe, at least for now, everything was okay.
