They think they're genuinely tormenting the players but the players are actually having a lot of fun being melodramatic sillies. The Watchers are so busy eating the fake emotions of despair and grief and betrayal that Grian gets to feast on the true joy of friends playing a game. He's really struggling to contain his own glee and keep the ruse going.
