Only recently I’ve realized how prevalent ultras are in my sketchbook (atleast once every other page)

And they were like “are you autistic is that your hyper fixation” and I was like “yea probally”

And they said I draw noses well!!!! And they like my lineart!!!! Yayayay!!!

I think that’s the first other ultra fan I’ve met in real life!

Allow me:

Firstly: I have not seen this episode or the rest of this particular show, but I do know they WERE originally stuck up there for a bad reason, so the bad guy of the two-parter could steal their powers and use that to kill the fifth guy. I’m guessing at some point the tables turned and they were able to empower their friend for some ass-kicking. Also: “friend” is a loose term because iirc the guy on the far left is an uncle-by-marriage to the guy on the ground, the guy second-from-left is fallen guy’s cousin/left guy’s nephew, and the other two are close family friends to the other three.

Lastly: The suit actor playing second-from-left is in all likelihood Kenpachiro Satsumata, the same man who suit-acted for Godzilla from 1985 to 1995. He also was the suit actor for Hedorah in 1971. During filming, his appendix ruptured and he needed to be rushed to the hospital, wherupon the Hedorah suit was cut open so he could be operated on.

If you personally would like to try the Ultra Series, the latest installment (an animated film titled Ultraman: Rising) is out on Netflix now, and Tsuburaya Productions has the latest TV series, Ultraman Blazar, up on their YouTube channel (with English dubbing and a wide variety of subs). After that, just follow your personal taste.

It's that time of year when Tumblr celebrates Easter by posting pictures of crucified anime characters, and inevitably somebody in the notes will pop up to helpfully explain that crucifixion imagery has no cultural significance in Japanese media because Japan is only about 1% Christian, which bugs me because it's completely wrong.

It's true that in the majority of cases, crucifixion in Japanese cartoons isn't meant to be conveying any specific theological message, but something Western audiences are likely to miss is that a large portion of those random crucifixion scenes are referencing Ultraman.

Ultraman's creator was a devout Roman Catholic who explicitly intended the titular hero to read as a Christ figure, and consequently, various Ultramen have been crucified on multiple unconnected occasions throughout the franchise's history. Crucifixion scenes in Japanese cartoons are often directly name-checking particular crucifixion incidents from Ultraman, right down to emulating the compositions and camera angles of specific shots. It's like an especially morbid version of the Akira slide.

The upshot is that, while it's true that the inclusion of gratuitous crucifixion scenes in Japanese cartoons typically has no (intentional) theological message, stating that they have no cultural significance is incorrect. A large chunk of the Japanese viewing audience are going to see them and immediately go "hey, that's an Ultraman reference".

Anyway, as an image tax, have a shot of four crucified Ultramen miraculously resurrecting a fifth Ultraman by shooting laser beams out of their hearts:

Daichi and X - "autistic physicist and his boyfriend who lives in his phone" is a vibe for all time

Mirai and Team GUYS - he's their special little guy!

Gamu and Fujimiya - an unstoppable force (maximum tsundere power) meets an immovable object (a nice boy who's totally no-selling all of his bullshit). And also they're both super-geniuses. It's beautiful.

Yoko and Haruki - I think there should be more romances in tokusatsu where there's a really intense woman who's going to arm-wrestle her target crush into surprised but cheerful submission

Musashi and Fubuki - the degree to which their friendship is based on Musashi being annoying as shit is delightful. Also, Hiura-taichou gave them a ship name in the show.

BONUS - Dan and Gen - it's really mesmerizing, isn't it?

the kuudere archetype is quite literally just autism coded every kuudere character ends up hitting tha same notes

seemingly cold/unapproachable, "mean"/blunt in some way but mostly only bc they're just "shy"/introverted/struggle socially in some way, and/or putting on a front to cope in interactions w strangers defrosts (read:masking), and becomes more friendly and talkative (unmasks) with their close friends bc they understand them and are able to be their "true" selves around them

Eh, even if earlier kaiju media had planet-threatening stuff, it still wasn't framed like 'if you can't turn reality inside the fuck out don't show up'. Having actually watched SP & early Ultraman myself, c'mon: (a) Ultra-foes were never popping the moon with fingersnaps and (b) Ultima's avatar is beat by a mix of physics technobabble and Wacky Garage Jet Jaguar's AI descendant. So no, I can't buy the rationalizations for this sort of wank being somehow obligatory if you're a Thinking G-Fan.

I agree that one doesn't need to watch anything or even everything Godzilla in a hyper-specific way in order to validate one as a Godzilla fan, however I don't think anybody is trying to push any "fan wank" on me? Not implying that's what's being inferred, of course. (I'm autistic and often worry about saying the wrong thing.)

From my perspective, all I've seen is an explanation of what Ultima's deal is in order to contextualize certain aspects of an over-the-top fan animation, and a reminder that the video in question intentionally blows everything out of the water and into outer space for the sake of being pure Big Dumb Entertainment, and I don't have a problem with Big Dumb Entertainment. Hell, I'm excited for GxK's Showa Era-inspired craziness, but I also enjoy a bit of grounding to the craziness like in Legacy of Monsters. A lot of comments on that vid might say "omg this is The Best Thing Ever" but I'm just sitting here feeling like it's all flash and no substance, and that's okay. People can like what they like, and they can dislike things as well, it doesn't make them any less of a fan.

(Plus, I know where to go if I crave crazy over-the-top cosmic scale dumb fun with giant things; Gurren Lagann is on Crunchyroll.)

so shin ultraman is definitely a standalone not connected to the rest of the wider ultraman verse and in fact is very very different in tone and approach from the wider ultraman verse so you really can’t meld them together. however. you know that post about when there’s an alien character who’s odd and you think they’re odd because they’re an alien but then you meet the other aliens and they aren’t odd and whole time the cunt was just autistic. that’s lipiah and the other ultras. to me

well i most recently finished kamen rider build and (comically long censor beep) so long story short i think its very good and im making someone who was on the fence about watching it watch it now. i really cannot get into it but it was kind of scientifically engineered to fuck with me as a person and also was just a very well written story and is one that makes a rewatch drive you up the wall sento is really testing my love for other characters he really might become number 1 protagonist

but im actually already watching something else now which is after like 6 months im picking up ryuki again and im 12 episodes in and i like them :] i hear theres also things that will fuck with me in ryuki beyond the major character death spoilers i happen to know so thats great and not scary at all.

this also isnt counting the fact im doing super hero time with friends so im also watching two ultraman shows rn shout outs to super hero time r/b is a funny ass show to be among my first ultraman shows and geed is a nice time :]

does... watching 2 episodes of power rangers dino charge during a mental breakdown count we think. beloved childhood show that has aged about as well as you would imagine. i really need to see kyoryu and put those suits in a different context LOL

19. If you could go back and change one show, what would you change?

good lord where do i start. im mostly a kamen rider watcher and in that regard i have very controversial picks as my favourite shows id say. off the top of my head if i could do one thing id probably go back in time and hold inoue at gunpoint to get rid of mihara entirely from faiz and have mari turn into delta instead. but with the way he is hed probably kill her at the end of the episode and have keitaro would end up with it. still somehow a better option than mihara being there hes so nothing for such a good looking suit. adds nothing to the plot at all hes just there. dont worry when my entirety of faiz rewrite happens to make it about mari and osada then you will all see
