Prague Ch F: Jiri Vesely def. Gauthier Onclin 6-2, 3-6, 7-6(3) Match Stats
📸 ATP official website
Despite the slight dip in the second set as a result of G. Onclin's more pace to his shots, J. Vesely had his range set since earlier in the first set as he tried to stay offensive from the baseline. This helped him navigating the third set (per his experience) as even though he failed to convert 2 match points on return, he managed to set up his lead early in the tie-breaker thanks to his smashes, followed by his defensive mechanisms. As such, it aided him to generate overwhelming 19 break points, 13 more than G. Onclin's 6, where the latter converted 33% of them within the second and the third sets.
Besides, J. Vesely also served more consistently in this match. Scoring 11 aces than G. Onclin's 2, the Czech stood out in his first serves by winning 73% of his first serve points, 7% more than G. Onclin. The latter somehow double-faulted seven times than J. Vesely's 3, which faded his second serve winning percentage 2% below J. Vesely, making it more attack-prone despite trying to stay balanced.
This title was J. Vesely's first Challenger-level title since the Mouilleron-le-Captif Challenger 2021, his ninth Challenger singles title overall. To add, J. Vesely re-entered the Top 250, landing at 234 after this title, while G. Onclin finished at 259 live at the end of this tournament. For the latter, his next tournament will be the Oeiras 4 Challenger, rewarded by the Special Exempt as he will face Beibit Zhukayev in the first round. Should be some interesting last stretches before the French Open/Roland Garros qualification rounds!

PragueA tennis player has tested positive for COVID-19 in the Prague Challenger tournament, the first post-lockdown ATP event, tour organizers said Saturday without giving a name.
"After the completion of pre-tournament testing at the ATP Challenger event in Prague, a player has tested positive for COVID-19," ATP said in a tweet.

According to the tour, "In addition, a contact tracing process has been initiated to identify and inform anyone who may have come in contact with the player."
"The players were not directly involved in the main draw or qualifying events of the tournament," he said.

NCAA cancels everything.
And I do mean everything.
NCAA tournaments canceled over coronavirus (espn.com)
The NCAA canceled its men's and women's basketball tournaments on Thursday because of the spread of coronavirus, putting an abrupt end to the season less than a month before champions were to be crowned.
The unprecedented move comes a day after the NCAA announced the games that were scheduled to start next week would go on, but played in mostly empty arenas. That plan was scrapped as every major American sports league from the NBA to MLB put the brakes on its season due to concerns about the pandemic.
"This decision is based on the evolving COVID-19 public health threat, our ability to ensure the events do not contribute to the spread of the pandemic and the impracticality of hosting such events at any time during the academic year given the ongoing decisions by other entities," the NCAA said in statement.
The NCAA canceled championships in every spring sport, which include hockey, baseball and lacrosse....
The NCAA joins a host of other organizations canceling or suspending all or part of a season. As previously mentioned, the NBA is already suspended, and:
ATP Suspends Tour For Six Weeks Due To Public Health & Safety Issues Over COVID-19 (atpworldtour.com)
The ATP has announced a six-week suspension of the men’s professional tennis tour due to escalating health and safety issues arising from the global outbreak of COVID-19. The suspension means all ATP Tour and ATP Challenger Tour events scheduled up to and inclusive of the week of April 20 will not take place.
Following the recent cancellation of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, the affected ATP Tour events are the Miami Open presented by Itau, the Fayez Sarofim & Co U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championships in Houston, the Grand Prix Hassan II in Marrakech, the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters, the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell, and the Hungarian Open in Budapest.
The six-week suspension comes in the wake of the World Health Organization’s declaration on Wednesday that COVID-19 constitutes a global pandemic and the 30-day travel restriction announced by the United States for foreign nationals from 26 European countries....
Elsewhere, the ATP noted that the US decision to restrict travel by foreign nationals made canceling Miami and Houston, at least, very easy, since most of the people on the tour wouldn’t be allowed in the country.
Oddly, the WTA Women’s Tennis Association, has only canceled Miami and Charleston, despite normally being the more socially conscious of the two tours, and despite there being another four events scheduled in April. I don’t know about Bogota, but I can’t imagine any circumstances under which the national health authorities in the affected countries would allow the Stuttgart, Istanbul and Prague tournaments to be held. (Worth noting that the Czech Republic has announced its own travel restrictions, which would make attending that tournament deeply problematic in any event.)
MLB suspends spring training, delays Opening Day at least two weeks (espn.com)
Major League Baseball is delaying the start of the 2020 regular season by at least two weeks in response to the coronavirus pandemic, the league announced Thursday.
MLB also said in a statement that spring training games have been suspended, starting at 4 p.m. ET Thursday.
Commissioner Rob Manfred and the league's owners held a conference call Thursday afternoon to formalize the plan.
"MLB will announce the effects on the schedule at an appropriate time and will remain flexible as events warrant, with the hope of resuming normal operations as soon as possible," MLB said in its statement....
I suspect two weeks will be ... insufficient.
The National Hockey League also suspends play for the time being.
NHL suspending play immediately due to virus (espn.com) by Emily Kaplan, ESPN
The NHL has suspended its season because of the rapid spread of the coronavirus but hopes to resume in the future. There are 189 games and three and a half weeks remaining in the NHL's regular season. There were 10 games on the NHL slate Thursday.
"The NHL has been attempting to follow the mandates of health experts and local authorities, while preparing for any possible developments without taking premature or unnecessary measures," the league said in a statement. "However, following last night's news that an NBA player has tested positive for coronavirus -- and given that our leagues share so many facilities and locker rooms and it now seems likely that some member of the NHL community would test positive at some point -- it is no longer appropriate to try to continue to play games at this time....
In the soccer world: Major League Soccer in the US has suspended its season (nbcsports.com), international friendlies for both men and women’s national teams have been called off, Britain’s Premier League is dealing with positive tests from its players and coaches (theguardian.co.uk), and Spain’s La Liga has suspended play.
Even horse racing, of all things, is taking some steps, although, again, the word “insufficient” comes to mind.
California, Florida, Maryland, New York racetracks bar fans in response to coronavirus outbreak (drf.com Daily Racing Form)
Racetracks across the U.S. and around the world began rapidly mobilizing in reaction to the burgeoning coronavirus outbreak, with tracks in California, Florida, Maryland, New York, Ireland, and Dubai closing their doors to spectators for the foreseeable future.
Santa Anita Park in Southern California, Golden Gate Fields just northeast of San Francisco, Aqueduct racetrack in Queens, Gulfstream Park in Florida, Laurel Park in Maryland and all tracks in Ireland announced that spectators would be banned effective immediately, though racing would continue at the tracks. In California and New York, the spectator bans were put in place after the states’ governors urged or demanded that crowds be limited in order to curtail the spread of the virus....
And just in time for Kentucky Derby season, too.
Even the shiny new XFL football league is suspending its season (nbcsports.com).

Jozef Van Wissem — New Lute Music for Film (Incunabulum)
NEW LUTE MUSIC FOR FILM by JOZEF VAN WISSEM
In recent years things have ramped up for lutenist Jozef Van Wissem. He’s grown his audience in Eastern Europe to the point where he keeps a residence in Poland. There have been cinematic and sonic collaborations with Domingo Garcia-Huidobro, Zola Jesus and Jim Jarmusch, and business dalliances with ATP Recordings, Sacred Bones, Crammed Discs and Consouling Sounds. But for this concert recording, made early in 2017 at the Meet Factory in Prague, Van Wissem is back to releasing his music on his own Incunabulum imprint.
It never hurts to be able to fall back on your own resources, and this record wears its practicality quite literally on its sleeve. New Lute Music For Film sets you up with a few tunes from Jarmusch’s Only Lovers Left Alive that didn’t make it to the soundtrack CD, while its subtitle — Beyond Props — not only advertises Van Wissem’s availability to make more movie music, it tells you want kind of projects he wants. Having not only played on Only Lovers Left Alive soundtrack but also schooled actor Tom Hiddleston in lute technique, he wants to be more than a prop. If you’ll pardon the metaphorical shift, Van Wissem’s music is strong enough to be a main ingredient, not just a spice.
The album catalogs his current strengths. It opens with a four-piece, fifteen and a half minute long sequence (billed as four separate tracks on the CD’s sleeve but correctly identified on the record’s Bandcamp page) that shows how years of road dogging have elevated his technique. His tone has never projected more boldly, and his dissonances have never been more pungent. He’s never walked the rigorous stair-steps of his palindromic compositions with more ease, and he’s equally sure-footed transitioning from tune to tune. Even his singing, never his strong suit, sounds more confident. It’s worth remembering that Van Wissem was active on Holland’s punk scene before he turned to the lute, and he applies punk’s phlegmy bluntness to lyrics that honor the challenge of being an authentic individual and promote the redemptive power of love.

Nagal first Indian to win a Grand Slam singles match in 7 years - Click on link to subscribe my channel https://ift.tt/34vXvMA Facebook - https://ift.tt/2Vjiyz6 Twitter - https://twitter.com/HsrSports Pinterest - https://ift.tt/2ywdZIH Tumblr - https://ift.tt/2z5qwmL Blog - https://ift.tt/2VlBDRu #Sports #Sports_News #Tournament PUNE: "To be honest, I am just chilling, doing my stuff, eating food and watching some videos on Youtube." That's Sumit Nagal, trying to play it down after recording the biggest win of his career so far. The 23-year-old Indian clinched his first win in a Grand Slam when he beat American Bradley Klahn 6-1, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 in the first round of the US Open in New York on Tuesday. "It's time to relax, but the feeling was definitely different when I was at the courts. It was kinda tensed," the India No. 1 added. Returning to the venue where he hit the headlines by taking a set off the legendary Roger Federer last year, Nagal needed two hours and 12 minutes to wrap up his victory on Court 12. The reward for the sweet success is a face-off with World No. 3 Dominic Thiem, who advanced 7-6, 6-3 after his opponent Jaume Munar of Spain retired with a knee injury he suffered in the second set. "I am ready and excited to play him (Thiem). It's gonna be fun and see where I stand in terms of my tennis level," Nagal, who had also stretched Stand Wawrinka the full distance in an ATP Challenger in Prague coming into the US Open, said of his next top-10 rival. "It's my first (in a major), definitely not gonna forget. Grinding out in four sets, rain delay, cloud, sun, wind … it was just a messy day but happy it turned out to be in my favour." The last time an Indian recorded a singles win at a Grand Slam also came at Flushing Meadows, when Somdev Devvarman beat Lucas Lacko (then World No. 84) of the Czech Republic after qualifying in 2013. The Tripura-born then lost to Andreas Seppi in the second round, pocketing $53,000. Somdev in fact had reached the second round of the Australian Open, French Open and US Open in 2013. He also reached the second round of Wimbledon in 2011 and the second round of US Open in 2009 also. Somdev tweeted after Nagal's win saying "Well Done Sumit Nagal. About time!! Keep it going! On the other hand, Nagal is assured of $100,000 (Rs. 73 lakh approx) for reaching the second round, his biggest pay cheque yet, thanks to the revised prize money structure by which early round winners will get an increased share of the pot from this year. "Yeah, I would say it is a reward for all the hard work I have put in and hard training week," he said. The start of matches on outer courts were delayed by rain and gusts of winds that continued through the day made it tough and tricky for the players. The industrious Nagal, with his trainer Milos Galecic from Nensel Tennis Academy of Germany on court side, adjusted to the conditions more quickly than the local lad, the 2010 NCAA singles champion and owner of eight Challenger titles. The Indian delivered just one ace, but he is known more for his work rate. He covered 2490.6 metres of the court, while the 30-year-old Klahn ran 2278.3 metres. Nagal was quick off the blocks, riding on an error-prone start by his rival to get back to back breaks and take the first set in 23 minutes. Left-handed Klahn dropped serve in the third and fifth games with a string of unforced errors, double-faulting on breakpoint in the fifth. In the second set, Nagal continued to exploit Klahn's shaky serve to go up 4-2. He squandered a chance to close out the set in the eighth game when he had three chances to break again. He eventually served it out in the next game for a two-set advantage. The American played a steadier game to take the third set. He broke Nagal in the eighth game, the Indian surrendering it after being 40-15. Klahn took the set with an ace in the next. Nagal quickly regained his focus and raced through the fourth set in 28 minutes. Overall, Nagal was the superior player of the two. He had 80 percent (70/88) of his first serves in and won 77 percent of those points. He broke the California native six times while surrendering his own serve just once. Top Comment Congrats ... Keep Going 🤘 See All Comments Add comment Nagal hit only 17 winners compared to the 30-year-old Klahn's 32, but the former also made far fewer unforced errors - 17 to his rival's 40. After five consecutive holds, J. Vesely had a break point as a result of G. Onclin's failed volley before he broke to 4-2, followed by a hold to 5-2. It took two more games before J. Vesely had an earlier chance to serve for the match, but G. Onclin capitalized on J. Vesely's unforced errors by firing a forehand winner to generate his break point before he broke to 5-4. Subsequently, G. Onclin held his serves to 5-5. Interestingly, G. Onclin's forehand was fired too far for J. Vesely's one-point lead 2 games later, where the Czech notably had 2 match points, which were foiled as the tie-breaker became unavoidable.
J. Vesely then had a smashing start to the tie-breaker, as he smashed his way to lead a mini-break to 2-0 before strengthening his lead to 3-0. Somehow, his defenses got G. Onclin misfiring his forehand to generate the former's match point (6-1), and while the Belgian's intuitive volley saved one of those match points, it was insufficient due to J. Vesely successfully serving it out, taking the third set 7-6(3) to secure his first Challenger title of the year.

Have added new dimensions to my game, says Sumit Nagal | Tennis News
BENGALURU: Sumit Nagal is itching for matches. Just as well. The India No. 1 has made the US Open’s direct entry list. Before he gets to New York for the Grand Slam starting on August 31, the 22-year-old will play an ATP Challenger on outdoor clay in Prague from August 17 to 23. Ranked 127th, Nagal has stayed locked at his training base in Peine, Germany, since early March, outside of playing in open or club-level tournaments. One of them was a month ago in Pinneberg, where he beat German pro Daniel Masur in the final; he made the semifinals of another in Basel. Nagal leaves next Thursday for Prague, from where he’ll head to New York to play the second major main draw of his career. “I’m excited,” Nagal said. “I have only made one Slam main draw so far. I know the situation is not the same, but I’m going to do the right things which are in my hand.” Nagal, who bowed to Roger Federer in the first-round last year, isn’t a fan of faster hardcourts, though he loves the vibe of New York City. The Indian, who featured in the qualifying draw of the Australian Open in January, promised to play freely before returning to Europe and his beloved clay. Nagal, who has worked on his German these last months, has also primed his stubborn play. “I’ve tried to add stuff to my game, new dimensions. I’ve worked on my serve,” he said. “My fitness work has been regular, the things that I normally do, speed, strength, endurance. I’ve also been doing yoga.” GUNNESWARAN HOPEFUL Prajnesh Gunneswaran, the India No. 2 and at 132 on the ATP rankings, is presently five places out of the direct entry list for the US Open. The left-hander, however, will take a chance and go to New York. It is unlikely that the tournament, which has done away with the qualifiers this year, will call for alternates in the midst of a pandemic to fill late openings in the field. The 30-year-old, who was at a career-best No. 75 last April before being laid low by a series of injuries, has been training this last month. The Chennai-based pro returned to the practice courts for about 10 days in June before the second lockdown. “I’ve used the time in July to sort out injury worries. I couldn’t do treatment, especially for the elbow earlier, because of the lockdown. All that has been sorted out now and I’m close to serving at my best,” the 6’2’’ Gunneswaran said. “I’m looking forward to playing again and playing my usual game. It’s been a while.” Gunneswaran is likely to travel to the US in late August, after which he’ll head to Europe for the French Open qualifiers. “I’m in no rush to play the Challengers,” he said, pointing at Covid-19. “I want to get into the big tournaments, play the qualifiers of Tour events. I could also do with some practice on clay.”
