the church gorges her like a perfect lamb, makes the miserable saint warm & tired. her bed much more akin to a lump of coal than the hay of her hope, she thinks of fire in the shape of an outreached hand. she reaches forwards & becomes swallowed by the rosy hue of reds when countless hands reach towards her. this is to say that she swallows their misfortune so they can swallow their own lives. when she thinks of home, she thinks of a black hole of faces, voices that are never quite distinguishable, angels who whisper in her ears to tell her to take their hand or they die in her arms. & death extinguishes her fear of those hands, relights a terrifying reality where lifeless bodies lean into her hands like a mother with a child. ( but she doesn't have children ; she doesn't want to touch them & doesn't want them to touch her. her childhood makes her think of everything that makes her stomach squeeze uncomfortably. ) BUT SHE'S REACHING FOR THEM : her fear is much closer to a child's cry, she feels like she's being erased in their mouths.

they speak so simply, & koemi feels small in the little doubt that encases her skin in a chill. she wants to take a step forward, her tongue is solid lead & her mouth won't open. eyes fade into the background of the void of white that opens in her gut. bile sits at the base of her stomach, holds her face carefully in the eyes before her, white monarchs flutter in her chest. her hands wring themselves like her delicate hands wring the spirit water from their hallow wells ; she fears that what leaves her cannot be as holy as the church begs it to be. she can only be human.
