termina is anachronistic of course, so i am allowing any holes to thrive comfortably

i place his age during termina at 33 and his enlistment in his teens. i play around with him enlisting at 16. this would mean 17 years of service, which makes sense for a lieutenant colonel. this would also mean he enlisted sometime in the late 1920s when doing so voluntarily was possible and when kaiser was rising to power.

pav is the funger equivalent of belarusian. this is because i know more about belarus than other former soviet nations, and i am more comfortable writing what i know. (he speaks russian in one of my old posts, and i wish i could change it) this headcanon is also why i was very happy to draw pav in vyshyvanka for anon

we know that pav lost his family through an invasion during the first great war; belarus was invaded by germany in WWI, and many lives were lost.

youth and family

i believe pav's parents had him when they were older, and that he has an elder sister who left home as soon as he entered adolescence. his friends and relatives lived in the village with him. he spent his childhood roughhousing with his male cousins. the women he knew best were older women with traditional worldviews he had disdain for and a hormonal teenage sister he did not get along with. with these combined factors in mind, he developed sexist attitudes in his youth.

pav was easy to get along with as a child. he was brave and adventurous, even if he was not very talkative with strangers. he was happy with his village & the forests that surrounded it. he didn't really dream of travelling beyond. his teen years were soured by the great war and he underwent a transformation into a jaded and disconnected person. because, really, he would have gone crazy otherwise

i think it makes sense for him to be raised by worshippers of alll-mer but that his family's religion isn't very relevant to his upbringing besides sundays at the orthodox church and of course it fostering some core tenets of his worldview. as religion does. i do believe if this was the case, he would lose faith during the war or at least would not hold back his criticism of the religion.

gender and sexuality

there is a joke on my blog that pav is aroace. i did this because i am aroace. i do not believe it is true for him, but i do think he would have an aversion to sex & romance and that his behavior in the game is performative and caricaturistic. so that's where the joke comes from.

i believe pav is a cisgender man with attitudes typical of the time and a strange flamboyant flair that he easily abandons under duress. his sexuality could really be anything; it isn't very relevant to his character overall.

• Dread Nation duology by Justina Ireland: when zombies rise during the Civil War, the war ends and black and Indigenous people are instead forcibly conscripted to fight the zombies while also waiting on wealthy white people. Jane, one such fighter begins investigating missing people and unearths a conspiracy. *Jane herself is bi, but the second book has a split POV with her friend Katherine who doesn't use the word aroace because it's the 1800s, but does clearly state that she is not and has never been interested in sex or romance

• Sidekick Squad series by CB Lee: in a world of superheroes and villians, a group of teens discover that the superheroics are just bread and circuses to distract from the corrupt government and begin to mount a rebellion. *Each book follows a different member of the group and book 3 follows Emma, who is questioning and thinks she might be aroace

• Connor Hawke's Green Arrow comics by various authors. Unfortunately, Connor doesn't really have any easy collections I can recommend, but he's a great character and has two stories focusing specifically on his asexuality in DC's 2022 and 2023 pride issues

• when she was younger her care-keepers used to take her to a lot of psychiatrists because they were afraid inyo might have had something from antisocial spectrum,

• she is descendant of siberian indigenous people (the nenets/insert other uralic nation here) that assimilated with russians (so that's where her last name came from) and then they moved to tokio. so inyo is third-generation immigrant (this term sounds so american but i couldn't find better words to describe this),

• inyo just like tiger and miko was growing up in the orphanage but she haven't had anybody to help her with a second language so she learned russian all by herself,

• of course she also knows english, so it means that she knows 3 completely different alphabets,

• when she is stressed out, she starts quoting shakespeare in her head (this is hamlet most of the time, but also macbeth),

• her favourite movie is audition [1999],

• even though she doesn't seem to be that type of person, she is maximalist, she needs to have everything under her hand,

• so, before cognito played against strikas both of the teams met and inyo talked to shakes, convincing him to look up for a new house and gave him a penelope's bussines card (she rented an apartment from her for the duration of her stay in south africa),

• yeah, inyo and penelope are two different people, but hold on,

• the next day, she and shakes met accidentally at penelope's office, so while inyo was there bcs of a "payment problems", shakes wanted to talk about penelope's house offers,

• when penelope and shakes left for a few minutes, inyo copied from penelope's phone other clients numbers (including shakes) so she could impersonate as one of the employees of penelope's company (or penelope herself) and mess up with shakes,

• after some time, inyo dressed up as the notary arrived at shakes's new house and started installing small cameras,

• she didn't even used it to spy on him, she just informed penelope about damage shakes and spenz were doing and what was caught on the cameras, so penelope terminated the contract with our beloved male mary sue,

• oh and cognito won in this episode.

• (between season 6 and 7) inyo would be more of a minor but still important character here. i think she would just ghost everyone in this series. also bcs of the fact that we all loved the idea of helena being part of iron tank team, inyo and helena have the longest screentime together, next to the interactions between inyo tiger and miko,

• (season 7, mind over matador) very similiar situation to what happened to shakes in previous season, but this time inyo impersonate doctor carmen (who is also a completely different person and not inyo's alter ego), so when the real doctor carmen is not around, inyo undercover is fucking up with el matador's head,

• aileen was the only one that had odd feelings about this, bcs doctor carmen she knew was never much of a hugger.

relationship with:

• helena: open interpretation tbh, they can be queerplatonic but also queer in general. helena probably was the one who get attached first. they are like moon and sun, winter and summer. and bcs they are around the same age and one of the few women in super league they were forced to cooperate. but inyo trusts helena more than anyone, even tho she would never admitted it

Review: The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon

Where to begin. I think I’d forgotten how it feels to be breathless in the wake of a truly incredible book, heart racing and hands shaking against the back cover. Shoutout to Samantha Shannon for reminding me of that feeling.

The Priory of the Orange Tree is a beautiful flame-coloured hardback that has haunted my shelves since 2019 when it first came out and I grabbed it because it sounded dope, looked gorgeous and there were dragons on it (your first special interest never quite leaves you). After about three and a half years, and after resolving to read every day of 2023, I decided enough was enough; time to tackle this beast.

While other works of Shannon’s have been on my TBR before, Priory is the first of hers I’ve read. It’s my return to epic high fantasy after a long absence, and I can’t say I’m disappointed. Far from it, in fact. This book rattles with its own intensity, the stakes for each character, the rising romance and drama and the freefall towards devastation that builds all the way until about book five of six (for context, the huge 800-page novel is split into six smaller “books”).

I adored Priory. This review will likely be tragically short in an effort to avoid spoiling some of the fantastic reveals and brilliant storytelling, but for now I’ll discuss the things I loved so much about it without revealing too much.

Our four narrator characters are brilliant. They are flawed, messy, human and devoted. Ead is a secret mage tasked with protecting the Queen of a foreign nation; Loth is a kind and devout young man with much responsibility and too sweet and authentic a heart for the puppeteering courts he finds himself in; Niclays Roos is a bitter and jaded old alchemist with a deep core of darkness and a fierce hunger in him; and Tané is a 19-year-old striving to prove herself and take up the mantle of an honoured dragonrider. All four of them work to bring the rich world of the novel to life, each from a different background, with different goals, all eventually clashing and - perhaps, if the greatest evil is to be overcome - aligning.

I’ll briefly touch on the diversity in Priory. Of our four narrators, two (Ead and Tané) are female; both are also women of colour (Ead is black, and while Priory does not take place in our own world, Tané’s home of Seikii shows clear parallels with Japan). Niclays is the only white narrator, and he is gay; Loth is black. Ead and Queen Sabran are both lesbians, and for those who, like me, fall on the aro/ace spectrum, Tané’s arc has no hint of romance, and there is a strong case for aroace Tané. Not only do we have diversity, but well-written diversity too (I know that you can have all the representation you want, it’s not really worthwhile if it’s all terrible). Shannon draws on both Western and Eastern mythology for this fantasy epic, split between two great worlds of the East and West, divided by a vast sea known as the Abyss. Yet within the hemispheres there is conflict and diversity, Seiiki and the Empire of Twelve Lakes in the East, and the various states of the West - Inys, Mentendon, Yscalin, Lasia, Hróth…

One of the greatest aspects of Priory is the way it interrogates history and genre. A story of a queendom ruled only by women, passed down from mother to daughter for a thousand years, sounds feminist until you realise there is more below the surface. When a queendom is passed unfailingly from mother to daughter, everything suddenly hinges on a woman’s ability to give birth - and how feminist does that sound now? There is also the brilliant weaving of conflicting histories, and how those histories have shaped the world as it exists. Institutions that are founded on a single principle, says Priory, will invariably corrupt everything around themselves to maintain that course, even when new evidence says otherwise. When those who claim to know the truth still operate with only half the story, even they can see the real truth as a threat to the status quo.

Priory sings with vibrancy, it clamours with depth. Not a single character comes out unscathed, but that of course begs the question that the novel, on some level, is asking: what is the price we pay for tomorrow? What is it worth to us, what will we lose, to see the sun rise on a better world?

Name/Nickname: Some of you know it, but I’m not going to post my name here just like that. I don’t really have any nicknames anymore, either.

Gender: *siiiiiiiigh* Do I have to explain the median thing again? Do I? Demi-woman, to a first-order approximation—specifically, one of my facets is a cis woman, and one is agender (uses he/him pronouns for convenience, to distinguish from the she/her female facet and the they/them whole).

Sexual Orientation: *siiiiiiiigh* Aroace, to a first-order approximation. Specifically, the cis woman facet is aro and...something akin to demi but not quite it, and not so much “into men” as “put off by women, more so the more Prototypically Woman the person is”, but honestly, she’s so seldom attracted to anyone that the consideration is really academic. The agender facet is just plain aroace. So...depends who’s driving, but a lot of really basic things like “a person’s appearance is something you can be attracted to” are completely foreign to me.

(A short list right now would include Villagers of Ioannina City, Puta Volcano, Piqsiq, Helium Vola, Adjágas, Arvvas (I just think Sara Marielle Gaup Beaska is neat no matter who she’s working with, really), and while I haven’t listened to much CMX recently I’d feel extremely strange leaving them off.)

Favorite Solo Artist: Seriously, please stop. (That said, Giannis Haroulis, Alkinoos Ioannidis, Mari Boine, Lenine, Miquel Gil, Lídia Pujol, Savina Yannatou, and I do have a lingering fondness for Vasilis Papakonstantinou.)

Top Three Fictional Universes I’d Like To Live In: Hm. As myself? I’m not so sure there are any I’d do very well in. Star Trek, maybe. Or the world of Becky Chambers’ Wayfarers Trilogy.
