Ghost River Aqua Mane IPA (Picked up at Corner Market in Hattiesburg, MS). A 3 of 4. The all-NZ hop bill gives this quite a bit of nice berry and stone fruit as well as more standard orange citrus. Nice and clean on the palate and well-balanced, there's a touch of bitterness towards the finish, but this is by no means aggressive.

I tried to make a mock-up of my own alternative take On My Little Pony: Generation 5.

I had a lot of fun designing these, I won’t lie. The main idea was to bring back the mane (main) cast of characters all having drastically contrasting, strong personalities and color palettes. I think that was what G4 succeeded best at, and would probably (I’m no expert) increase marketability and make people want to buy the toys more.

I took inspiration for the new art style direction from an MLP G4 manga cover , not sure if it’s official or not, but I like that style a ton, I think it’s super cute and would be a good direction for a new show. This is of course operating under the assumption the new generation would just stay 2D instead of branching to 3D animation. I tried my best to mimic the style , I don’t think I did the best at that, but that art style on the manga cover is what I think they should go for. Maybe with a more pencil-textured brush for the outline. Feels unique from G4, but still cute in my opinion.

Instead of Friendship or Unity, the unifying theme tying all the characters together would be Artistic creativity and using it to express yourself. All the characters would represent a different form of art. The main villain being a bat-pony with wings and a horn, a mad scientist type who builds robots and gadgets to fight the main cast with the goal of stealing their art and feeding it through big, industrial machines to pump out hodge-podge mashed together copies and create her own art museums to profit off of them. They have to fight to take back their art and create works that express who they are without it being stolen or mass produced by machines and robots. She’s kind of inspired by Opaline but I tried to give her an alternative design. I also took a bit of inspiration from Dr. Eggman from the Sonic franchise. In general my take on this generation is kind of inspired by Sonic with these animal characters fighting against robots and industrialization. Specifically the Sonic Boom Cartoon with the beachy setting and vibes.

We also have the main character, Aqua Seastar, a yellow unicorn who’s got a very curious, inquisitive, detective type personality, ( very clearly my version of Zipp from the Make Your Mark Cartoon, because I actually liked the personality they gave her there, a lot) she’s constantly trying to solve all the mysteries that crop up around the island and poking around to learn new things. She’s also an aspiring animator who wants to make a cartoon about a detective squirrel inspired by her own adventures.

Speaking of characters from G5 I’ve based these characters on, Cloudy skies is basically my version of Izzy. A very similar personality, ( particularly how she’s characterized in the movie A New Generation, I think that’s where she’s at her best) just with the added twist of her being the motherly one of the group and a bit protective and neurotic about other’s safety. Also inspired a bit by Wammawink from Centaurworld or Ragatha from TADC. She’s the arts and crafts pony , with yarn and sewing needles in her hair. She’s also a Pegasus and I swapped her mane and coat color cause I figured we needed a blue pony.

Shellda is basically my answer to Sparky, a baby sea turtle who was orphaned and no one in the sea cared for her because she couldn’t keep up and would just “slow them down” . She eventually gets adopted by the main cast as a little sister figure and starts off shy but really comes into her own over time, gaining more confidence and becoming a watercolor painter. Also she can talk. She’s more of a toddler than a newborn.

I tried to imagine this setting as playing into being on a beach / island way more . Maybe coral reefs instead of trees on the surface , mythical creatures the ponies could encounter like in G4 , but specifically based on sea and marine animals. Like crabs made of rock or something. A stage in the center of town for GlimGlam Hot-Trot to perform on that looks like a giant clam. Whenever they travel off the island they could do it on a big pirate ship instead of a hot air balloon or a plane. Stuff like that.

This generation would also have modern tech but mainly for the sake of creating art, like art tablets and programs . As well as Dr. Nightwing and Terra Byte being inventors who create gadgets.

Overall , I have way too many ideas to go over in one post but I put a lot of thought into this and I hope you guys like it. What are your thoughts ? Do you have any questions about any specific characters or anything ? Let me know, cause I love MLP especially G4 and I had a lot of fun making this. Might be using these characters again sometime, soon.

When Scoria Spring's name had been plucked from the bowl of names, Glimmer's hand had been first to shoot up into the air, her lips breaking out into a wide, satisfied grin when District 1's escort, Brioche Wellbreeze, pointed her out amongst the other many female volunteers. Her blonde waves bounced against her shoulders as she headed up the steps and onto the stage, spinning on her heel to greet her classmates and friends with that familiar Glimmer smile. She'd been training all her life for this very moment, for the opportunity to win the Hunger Games and bring more glory to District 1. 

Her eyes scanned the crowd of teenagers and children below, sending a smug yet fleeting smirk in Scoria's direction. Scoria wasn't meant for the spotlight anyway, not with her thin-as-paper lips, her awkwardly lanky figure or the thick mane-like hair she forced into a ponytail each day. No, the spotlight had been created for people like Glimmer. For people who'd grown up being called beautiful, for people who knew how to have others eating out of their hands with just a smile and wink, for those who could actually hit their targets during practice. Someone like Scoria would only make District 1 the laughingstock of this year. 

Brioche reached into the bowl again, rummaging her hand around the slips until she pinched one with her fingers and tugged it out from the bottom. Her bright aqua-colored lips pulled into a smile and she stepped up to the mic, clearing her throat and finally looking down at the name on the paper. "Marvel Thorneworth." She announced. Glimmer recognized the name immediately. How could she not when his brother-

"I volunteer!" The familiar voice startled her enough for the smile on her glossy pink lips to falter, just for a split second before she noticed her expression on the screen and forced another smile on her face. Shit. It wasn't supposed to turn out like this. She was supposed to go to the Capitol and win the Hunger Games so that he would realize how much better than everyone else she was. He wasn't supposed to be her competition, no, he was supposed to be her future. 

Glimmer's stomach withered when Brioche lifted her finger in his direction despite the number of other arms raised and voices shouting, begging to be picked. (Y/N) forced his way through the crowd and Glimmer squeezed her hands together, eyes following him when he made his way up the stage and stood beside Brioche. Where had the boy who'd always mumbled and grumbled about his distaste for the games gone? She craned her neck slightly to peek around Brioche and searched his face until he finally lifted his head, the grimace on his face speaking volumes. Shit.

"May the odds be ever in your favor!"

Weirdly enough, Pokemon is the game that Leona ends up being hyper competitive in or makes weird sets for mons that work.

But~ I've done my amount of weird sets that work and mons that break things in half. I feel like he'd latch onto a few pokemon and just try to make a team based on those mons alone. He shuns the use of legendries, thinking they're a win button, and says that the show of a trainer's true strength is what you can do with a non-legendary pokemon.

ya know of all the sloppily localized things from the 90s-00s that I've gone back to over the years to try and make better sense of, I'm shocked I've never actually thought to poke around in monster rancher somehow. So so long as I'm on this Gali kick but too lazy to keep nudging around bits in photoshop, let's tackle the names, starting with the obvious purebred...

GALI[ガリ] after Galileo Galilei, because sun mask and his work promoting the Copernican heliocentric model of the solar system.

And then there's all the mix breeds...

Okay off to a rocky start... Lexus's name in Japanese is in fact just REKUSASU[レクサス], which is how Japanese phonetics handle Lexus, like the car, but like.... I don't know why? I've seen someone mention they think it's REXas like T-Rex, which I guess makes more sense, but why the -sasu bit? It does in fact retain the same name in MR2 even though the breed changes to Gali/Zuum and the English changes it to Scaled Mask. (notably they didn't make a new zuum pattern for its cape.)

WOOROKKUSU[ウォーロックス] I assume a portmanteau on Warlock and Rocks. A neat way to reference both Gali's magic wielding and Golem's stone body, but reliant on the Japanese L/R so kind of doesn't work in English since either Warlocks or Warrocks loses one half of the joke. The localization team seemed to have just thrown their hands up in the air and given up, calling it "Warrior" which has no tie to the name at all other than it starts with "war-" and MR2 just called it Stone Mask.

Sapphire and later Fanged mask was named INU-GAMI[イヌガミ] as in inu-gami[犬神], lit. "Dog God" but references a specific type of yokai that is an ascendant spirit of a dog, akin to magic foxes, cats and other animals common to Japanese folk lore.

Style, later renamed Brown Mask, was originally called TSUCHINOKO-BOKUSAA[ツチノコボクサー], which I can only assume is read like tsuchinoko BOXER[槌の子ボクサー] where the tsuchi-no-ko[槌の子], lit. "child of (the)hammer" is a Japanese cryptid described as a snake with a wide middle section, as if flatted with a mallet. Evoking the tsuchinoko is clearly a reference to worm, but I have no idea what the full name is supposed to mean... Someone who punches worms? A worm who punches?

Aqua, later Aqua Mask, was AKUARIUSU[アクアリウス], Japanese phonetics for "Aquarius." Pretty obvious reference to water bearer constellation as a Jell subtype.

Pixel aka Pink Mask, was in fact just called PIKUSERU[ピクセル] the English got this one right. At least I assume it's meant to be read as "Pixel", although I don't get the meaning. It sounds like pixie, obviously, but that seems to be it.

Omen, renamed Suezo Mask, originally had the very impressive name, HITOTSUME-OUJI[ヒトツメオウジ] from Hitotsume Ouji[一つ目王子]: "One-Eye(d) Prince."

Galion, alter Furred Mask, was in fact just called GARION[ガリオン]. The first game got it right. Although I assume it's a play on Gali and Leon, as in "Lion" in reference to a mane of fur since the key features being merged between Gali and Hare are the sun motif and fur. (Honestly kind of a shame they didn't opt to give him an actual mane in place of the sun spikes, and a more animal-ish face, it would have made for a cool unique look.)

Gara and later Galirous, was GARIRASU[ガリラス] but I think this should have been romanzied as GALILATH(?) because it seems to be a mash up of Gali and Monolith(Monol's name in Japanese is actually the full word Monolith[モノリス]) If it's not that then it's more obtuse than I can make sense of.

Shon in the original MR and Purple Mask in MR2, both actually come sort of close. SHION-KAMEN[シオンカメン] from Shion Kamen[紫苑仮面], Shion[紫苑] being both the Japanese name for the Tartarian Aster(Aster tataricus) but also short for shion-iro[紫苑色] the color of Aster flowers, generally referring to something in a range between Violet and a Light-Purple. Oh and of course kamen[仮面] means "mask". (So the Shon came from Shion, for some reason dropping the I, but the name Purple Mask isn't technically wrong as a translation and just happens to fit the localization's really bland and otherwise largely arbitrary naming scheme.)

KARAFURU-MASUKU[カラフルマスク] it's just an approximation of the English words COLORFUL MASK. So the second game got it spot on, and the first game just shortened it to Color.

And some of the special Gali/??? types...

Happy Mask, HARE-HARE[ハレハレ] I assume from hare[晴れ] meaning "clear(skies)" in other words, "sunny(weather)"

Gamer was HOKKEE[ホッケー] it's just "Hockey."

Kuma was shortened from its actual Japanese name, KUMADORII[クマドリー] as in kumadori[隈取り] a style of kabuki makeup characterizing villainous or otherwise violent roles.

Milky Way, AMA-NO-GAWA[アマノガワ] as in Ama-no-Gawa[天の川] lit. "River of Heaven" and it's the Japanese name for the Milky Way. His cloak has a little tanabata image on the back, which is a holiday involving the constellations orihime(vega) and hikoboshi(altair) separated by the milky way.

Sunset Gali in the MRAdvance2 is just an accurate reading of SANSETTO-GARI[サンセットガリ].

Ombren was clever, the original name is GARI-NO-KAGE[ガリノカゲ] as in [ガリの影] "Shadow of Gali" and Ombren is from the Latin root word Umbra, meaning "Shade" or "Shadow." When specifically used in reference to an eclipse an umbra refers to the obscured area withing the direct line of sight tangent to the sun and the moon.(as opposed to the penumbra which is the only partially obscured area interior to the light of sight tangent the earth and the moon.)

Weirdly Monster Rancher DS(aka Monster Farm DS 2) added these two random new Gali; Verde(Gali/Centaur) and Ultimate(Gali/???), who also appeared in the first mobile game, My Monster Rancher(aka Monster Rancher 1 Million) but I can't seem to find information on their japanese names? On the one hand English language resources don't seem to include the katakana, but then I tried searching the game name and breed type and can't even seem to find any Japanese language wikis that cover what I'm looking for... Or maybe i've fried my brain and there's some kind of obvious search result that i've been missing.

I dunno where i thought I was going with this... I don't have like, a conclusion or a take away. Just idly scratching more of that monster rancher itch.

I've been thinking a lot about my little Monday lately, especially about her being some sort of mudbray / sylveon hybrid. Taking into accout she'd probably inherit that soothing aura from the sylveon part, I'm kinda set on calling her an "emotional support pokemon", maybe even a "therapy pokemon", if you will. Which, of course, can lead to some fun interactions with various characters. Oh and if she meets poke villians? Hilarity ensued 100%

If she was to meet Giovanni, she'd probably be brought in by his grunts as a "rare" pokemon they snatched. Quite peculiar little horsey, she is, this one can fetch a hefty sum for team Rocket... Or not, judging by the way there were now two pokemon's heads resting on his lap at any given moment. He has two hands for a reason, after all, and his Persian seems to tolerate the new headpat buddy rather well.

Cyrus is overworking himself again? Not on her watch, nuh-uh! Curse this strange pokemon his admins brought in, why does he always feel so... sleepy around it? He hated his weak human body for giving in to her soft neighs and nudges so easily... Ugh, fine, he'll take a quick nap, just get that pony away from him!

Maxie is a fully-grown serious adult, he is NOT trying to hide little 'aww's and chuckles watching Monday entertain the pack of young Numels under his care. (His mind was not designed to handle THIS amount of cuteness, Arceus, have mercy on the man's soul)

Archie's laugh, on the contrary, can be heard throughout the entire team Aqua hideout, as he watches poor little horse get absolutely soaked by playful Sharpedos. Honestly, it's quite a rare sight to see them not try to chew through another pokemon, refreshing!

N is a villian only by proxy, yet still... He is trying to pet her? Not without Monday absolutely swarming him with attention, playful nudges and cute little demands for more pats. That's it that's the post the good boy is getting all the positive interactions I'M NOT THE ONE MAKING THE RULES

Colress and Lusamine, tbh, are getting Cyrus's treatment. These scientists just don't know when to stop and get some rest, do they? Well, let's make them practice self care for once!

Lysandre knows beauty when he sees it. That creamy white coat! That lush wavy mane! Of course, he'd prefer her pink markings to be a bit more red to suit his team's color... But that's nothing some proper accessories can't fix! Besides, that's a perfect excuse to get his hands on brushing that soft mane, weaving red ribbons into it!

Your thoughts on Tauros (both Kantonian and Paldean)?

From the beginning, Tauros has primarily just been one of those Pokemon that Exist. There's nothing objectively wrong with it, but there's not a whole lot to make it stand out; it's mostly just a bull. Being a non-evolving normal type doesn't help with this, as it's not really gimmick-y enough to stand out as a single-stager. The closest thing to a concept it has is the three tails, which it whips itself with while running:

Even then, though, the three tails aren't really emphasized visually in a way that makes them particularly stand out. It also has metallic-looking horns and three dots down its forehead, which I guess are meant to parallel the three tails. (Side note: missed opportunity to not give us a normal/steel-type Tauros.)

All that said, there's nothing really wrong with Tauros, other than the mane looking weirdly flat and the tails and hooves being a blueish-grey instead of just using the grey from the horns. It just doesn't stand out a whole lot.

The artists working on the new Paldean 'mons must have agreed, because SV gives us not one, but three (3) new regional forms for it. I'm not sure what the rational was beyond maybe wanting to give it a form for each tail, but either way, Tauros definitely needed the love.

That said, Combat Breed Tauros here is pointless and I really don't know why it exists. As a regional, it's just a black Tauros; the mane has been improved and the head and horn shape are ever-so-slightly different, but those changes are barely noticeable. And in the context of the other two forms, it's redundant; the combat form is literally just a watered-down version of its other two much better forms. What's the point of having a form that's the same as the other forms, but less?

I will say, though, that I do at least appreciate that there's not really any bullfighting references in this or the other two designs, beyond them just being fighting-type black bulls. Considering bullfighting is more than slightly controversial in Spain and is general animal abuse (that kills a fair amount of people as well), trying to base anything directly on it would be tasteless. This may be boring, but at least it's a harmless boring.

Aqua Breed Tauros is significantly better than both original and Combat Breed Tauros. It still sports the black coloration (which, as a side note, does look a lot nicer than original Tauros' plain browns and grays), but it actually plays around with the design in a meaningful way.

The most obvious change is the blue water drop-shaped markings in its mane, which indicate its fighting/water typing. These add a little pop of color, and frankly, I wouldn't have minded more of it in the design; the horns, head dots, or hooves all easily could have been blue as well.

It also changes Tauros body type a bit, more closely resembling a water buffalo than a bull. According to the 'dex, this is a result of high body fat that allows it to float on water. The mane also sports a different shape, as do the horns (which can light up blue along with the head dots).

Finally, the tails are different. For some reason it's not shown in the official art, but they tend to hold them twisted up, like rudders:

While I personally prefer Blaze Bleed Tauros for reasons I'll get into in a second, the Aqua Breed is a very nice regional that looks substantially different from the original design, and adds more of a theme to it as well.

Blaze Breed Tauros is similar to Aqua Breed Tauros, though with a less distinct body shape and horns. Arguably this makes it a little blander than the Aqua Breed, but what it lacks in body shape it makes up for in concept.

Blaze Breed Tauros is, unsurprisingly, part fire-type; so in order to represent that, they just took Tauros' three tails and twisted them together to form a dynamite fuse. Boom. Simple, effective, and fun. The Aqua Breed's tails weren't bad, but they felt a bit more forced and didn't read as immediately.

In addition, the mane on this breed goes upward, and contains fiery streaks. The horns go outward instead of upward, and just like the Aqua Breed, they light up along with the head dots:

I feel like the light-up idea makes more sense with the Blaze Breed, as it's akin to hot metal flaring up and becoming red with head. The Aqua Breed just kind of lights up Because. Though just like the Aqua Breed, I find myself wanting more color in the design by default. The tails in particular would've been great if they had red tips for this breed, as if the dynamite had been lit already.

Basically, in short: original Tauros is fine, but bland and fairly forgettable; likewise, the Combat Breed is just a recolor and didn't need to exist. The Aqua and Blaze Breeds, however, are both very good regionals; both change up Tauros' original design while adding something thematically to spice up the concepts. Whichever breed you personally prefer, both are significant improvements over the original.

look at his heavy hooded eyelids, how the corners of his mouth are upturned and the defined cupids bow, his nose is also strong and carries the harmony of his features. look at the lion to the right, it has those exact characteristics!

blonde hair also suits him very well, similar to the color of a lion's mane. he also has texture and volume to his hair, which i think looks better than straightening his hair pin-straight. (his baby pics show his natural hair is quite wavy, almost curly baby Jake was so cute) imo Jake also looks amazing with hairstyles that expose his forehead

very similar face contours as well. the highest points of his face (brighter/highlighted areas) allow for obtuse triangular shadows on the lower half of his face in the shape of large obtuse triangles which begin at the earlobes and end at the widest points of his jaw. his facial features (i.e. eyes, nose, lips) are compactly placed in the middle of his face which allow his masculine jawline and strong chin to really shine. Jake's facial width is also much shorter compared to the overall length.
