OCtober day 20: Phoenicians
Another two for one, hooray :)
I don't think either of these guys have appeared in AaSA nor are they likely to in the near future, although Phoenicia does have a cameo in some omake comics when I was reading Book 1 and 2 of Herodotus.

unpopular opinion for aph greece
as a matter of fact i think herk dislikes most western european nations because they took advantage of him in one way or another. he makes an exception for france, italy and MAYBE spain.
he was also there when ancient greece was blooming and getting influenced by persia, egypt, phoenicia, india etc
so when he hears shit about "shared western civilization" or "european culture" he can't help but laugh

Persian War Wednesdays 1.1
1.1-1.7
So our boy Herodotus has chatted with a few Persian learned men and he says that the source of contention between Greece and Asia is in the following
1. The Phoenicians kidnapped Io from Greece and she wound up in Egypt because of them.
2. The Greeks (which Herodotus assumes are Cretans) kidnap the king’s daughter Europe from the Phoenician city of Tyre
3. The Greeks (from Argos, as in Jason and the Argonauts) kidnap Medea from Colchis/Aea, using Io as an excuse to hang onto her
4. That whole mess with Trojan king Priam’s son taking Helen from Sparta and the Greeks apparently obliterating Troy off the face of the earth in recompense (even though archaeologically it was probably fine afterwards for a bit, actually)
The attitude of the Persians, according to Herodotus, was essentially
“we all know it’s bad to kidnap women but it’s even STUPIDER to seek vengeance for it and that’s why the Greeks are the Worst and every one of us here in Asia would like them to fuck off, please.”

“You really are your mother’s son”
Portugal looked up from his book, which was still open to the diagram of the upper rigging of a sail. He had not heard Al-Andalus enter the room because he was absorbed in his book. But now the man was looking over his shoulder.
Portugal replied, “What do you mean?”
He hardly remembered his mother. He could only recall her kind smiles and a soft lullaby in a language he did not know. He knew she had sent him and his brother away before Rome came to burn her fields and enslave her people.
Al-Andalus took a seat in the chair next to him, and said, “There is an old pagan story. They say that Phoenicia, your grandmother, made a deal with the god of the sea. Her trade prospered and her ships always came back to port. She sold her wine to Egypt and her dye to Greece. But, they say that the cost for her success was that she could never feel at peace on dry land again. She and her descendants would always feel the call of the endless ocean.”
Portugal did not realize how rapt he had been by the story until the Al-Andalus stopped speaking. Then he said, eager to know more, “Do you really think that is true?”
Al-Andalus laughed and said, “No, I don’t. There is only one God and He is good.”
He paused for only a moment before saying, “But, there is some truth in every legend. Your mother did have the most powerful fleet in the world.”
Portugal let this thought sit in his mind. He only had his model boats for now, but one day he would have a real one. Then he would find out what it was really like out on the blue. He had dreamed of it so many times.
His mother had done it before him. She had sailed around the Mediterranean and beyond it. He would go even farther. He was sure of it.
It would make her proud to know he had gone where she could not.
Portugal asked, “And what about me?”
Al-Andalus said, “I think you have seawater in your veins, too.”

• Welcome to The Epics! •
We are a nationverse Ancientalia RP ring, deeply rooted in history! As a sideblog of @aphancientsagora, which collects all APH Ancients creators, we decided to create a specific space for APH Ancients roleplayers, too. Like our main blog, we share the same values of education and inclusivity.
It’s hard for Ancients RPers to find other Ancients, so we wanted to bring everyone together and create a fun community! That is why we are open to minors, OCs, and even duplicates! We will also host AU events and game nights.
Roleplayers accepted into the ring are automatically allowed to join The Nursing Home Roleplay, an offshoot of our main Discord server open only to those in the ring. It has collaborative OOC chats and both open and closed IC chats!
• Rules • How to Apply • Art Credit •
You could be RPing with: Ancient Greece • Carthage • China • Illyria • India • Rome
You could RP yourself: Ancient Egypt • Aztecs • Britannia • Byzantium • Celt • Gaul • Germania • Iberia • Inca • Macedon • Maya • Mesopotamia • Mongolia • Persia • Phoenicia • Pontus • Tibet • Turkey • Vietnam • and many more!

nosy munday meme
♋: What drew you to this muse?
the aph ancients have always been my favorite area in history! i first made anysus in seventh grade. that was our world history year, and we had just gotten done learning about etruria and carthage and the punic wars. i really wanted to be friends with this person who just so happened to have rome and etruria ocs, so i decided to step in and make a carthage. i didn’t love carthage before, but i always thought they had it too rough, and i wanted to explore how they were negatively portrayed. so, here we are now!
☠: Who is a muse you would want to play?
related to my current blog, i think a phoenicia or egypt might have the best chance of interacting with lots of people.
completely unrelated, i fucking love aph monaco. we are the same person. doubt it will ever come to fruition, though.

APH CARTHAGE/HANNIBAL
Anyways err hi this is my APH Carthage oc! His name is Hannibal, and the art above is by me (I’ll show some fanart later)
Tbh he’s a bit complicated to explain for me 🤔 but to start, he’s the son of Phoenicia/Melqart! He and his father weren’t always super close but Carthage respects Phoenicia. Phoenicia taught him everything he knows about business, trading and his knowledge on the seas in general lol. To be honest, I didn’t want to take the military route I see most people go for with their APH Carthage ocs which isn’t bad at all! I just thought it’d be interesting if he was more based on Carthaginian politicians.
He’s very prideful, a bit stuck up but presents himself as superior (like literally everyone in the ancient world). He’s a bit narcissistic too but it’s more or less just having an inflated ego. He likes to show off his navy and how good at trading he is and a lot of the times, his wealth.
Before I go any further I AM A TOXIC DOOMED UNHEALTHY CARTHROME TRUTHER. THEY ARE AT EACH OTHER!S NECKS AND REGRET THEY EVER TRIED TO MAKE A RELATIONSHIP WORK THEY ARE SO TOXIC YAOI.
Rome and Carthage’s relationship to me is veeeery interesting. Like… Carthage knew he was great. The people around him knew he was a great. He was a big, maritime trading empire. But he needed more. It was never enough for him—I’m not sure if he feels guilty about this want for more and more but I’m leaning towards yes.
Rome was the same. He was just a regional power at the time, away from his siblings trying to conquer the Italian peninsula. But he oh so desperately needed to be recognised as more. He wanted to know he could rest comfortably knowing there was nobody that was going to try and invade him at any given time. Most of all, he wanted superiority (young Rome was EXTREMELY narcissistic lmao.. glad he’s toned it down overtime).
Their relationship just started out as acknowledging they needed something from each other and they were the ones that were going to give it to each other. But they got attached, “somewhat”. I think Carthage especially knew it was wrong and he shouldn’t try to pursue something more with Rome because he just has this gut feeling it’s not going to end well for him—Rome is growing, he!s becoming stronger, and sooner or later he wasn’t going to need Carthage anymore. But he did it anyway.
When Rome did eventually end up leaving him Carthage was PISSED (and maybe a lil heartbroken but shhh Carthage voice im a manly man that doesn’t need romance), but he could stomach it for now until that shit with the Mamertines happened—honestly thats another conversation in itself but basically, I have two Mamertines ocs, a set of siblings and being the land pirates they were they reunited Carthage and Rome except it’s not a happy reunion and Carthage wants to see Rome burn at a stake and vice versa.
The Punic Wars:
Carthage voice I’ll make you pay Rome….. I’M NOT DONE YET….. evilly laughs
Rome voice I’ll make you pay Carthage….. I’M NOT DONE YET….. evilly laughs
Rome voice heh. I told you.
When Carthage found himself at Rome’s mercy it was like his pride had disappeared. After the first Punic War, he was discouraged but he still believed he was going to win. At the end he had to face the fact he wasn’t invincible—and so did Rome. (After the second Punic war in particular I’m pretty sure he’s thoroughly a bit afraid of Carthage and the seas from the first coughs HANNIBAL IS AT THE GATES!!!1!1!1!)
In the afterlife, Carthage is more of a bitter old man. Distant, doesn’t really say much and just kind of lives alone lol. “Requiem for O.M.M.2” is him/CarthRome coded
Anyways fanart time! (Check alt texts for second and third)

Athens and Sparta Adventures: Chapter 6: The First Peloponnesian War Originally posted November 10, 2013
[previous] [contents] [next]
Quick Ref:
Nemesis: The goddess of divine retribution, who punishes hubris, pride against the gods.
Comments:
I still have no idea how i would tell this differently, but I will be thinking about it.
I also think about how I could have done the text better...
Original Description:
This page was sort of written at the last minute to tie the chapter together more. This started out as a study comic and I am learning more and more about themes and better ways of storytelling all the time, so I would really like to go back someday and implement more. When I wrote this page I didn't actually fully understand the Tragic Trilogy of Greek drama/myth: hubris (arrogance), ate (reckless action) and nemesis (divine retribution) but now that I have a better understanding of it and how Greek writers used it in their representations of their own history, you'll be seeing parallels to it and it will become an ongoing theme (watch Athens). As we know, cultural stability is relative. Greece thinks of Egypt as stable, but Egypt has had her own internal strife. It's part of a natural cycle for nations, and maybe if Greece realizes that it will be easier. Of course, without a central government Greece will always have trouble holding herself together. Being free, as much as she prized it, may not have been the best thing. obvious tantalus analogy is obvious hopefully

Bio: heya everyone!! Big sister of the seas and languages here! I have the same skin colour and hair colour as Carthage, my precious little bro-bro, but I’m not always Mr Grumpy. I’m actually a very powerful woman due to my economic benefits in the ancient times. I love to write and strategise, and I also love to do math due to trade! Mesopotamia, Ancient Egypt, and I are pretty tight since we both love to trade! I also became friends with China because his silk is amazing! I have a daughter, and most of you might already know her! She’s the ever beautiful Lebanon! I don’t like my neighbour, Persia, much… he’s too arrogant, which is why I gang up with Ancient Greece when it comes to bullying him. Oh, and my favourite colour is purple!
