The Hero and the two others went to the park. The drone didn’t know what a park was, but they knew it was different than Here, and that it wasn’t Home. They wanted to go home, but. They weren’t allowed wants. So they waited for their handlers to come back.

Loud noises on the television signaled a commercial break, and Five looked away. The tv was something to keep their mind busy, but it wasn’t enough. They almost wished they’d gone to the park, but. but but but. They weren’t made for pleasure like an Audience or even entertainment like the Actors. They were meant to obey, to blend into the background, to move the story forward even if it meant sacrificing themselves.

Dying for a purpose—for the Hero—sounded better than sitting on this couch day after day.

Maybe if they had known sooner that something was wrong—that the Actors were terribly off-script—they wouldn’t be here. They would be Home, Safe, with a script and a Job and not the emptiness of nothing that buzzed in their head where orders used to give them purpose.

It was standing. Oh, it hadn’t been told to, but it was tired, so tired, of waiting for a command. It knew its main objectives, and perhaps, perhaps that was why it was being neglected. It was being tested. Yes, that’s it. A test to make sure it knows its underlying purpose.

If no commands are given, wait for them.

It pushed that aside to grasp one of its secondary goals. It was definitely not supposed to do this, but what else was it supposed to do? Sit and rot on this couch, eating food like an actor, like a thing more human than itself, pretending to be equal to its superiors. It wasn’t made for this.

And so, it did something it was made for.

The door was unlocked with a few clicks. By the time it opened, the drone was back in its sitting position. They weren’t supposed to be back yet…? It usually took a few hours for them to be done with park, whatever that was.
