no but essek's abnormal behaviours in the last arc and especially in episode 140 are my roman empire. which is ironic because aeor is something of a roman empire itself. but in all seriousness, it was the episode that made me realise i love essek and his development so much and it kinda summarised it even before caleb's epilogue.
and i mean the "it's not fair" scene specifically. it's like, an epitome of his whole character progression from a person who put An Objectively Important Goal above all else without hesitation to someone who can't help but care for people around even more than his goal, no matter how big and relevant it is.
the mighty nein - and he alongside them - pretty much saved the world and freed an ancient city from thousand-year-long suffering. they defeated nine extremely powerful menacing entities who managed to stay out of everyone's sight for years and were so close to achieving their goal and dooming exandria in the process. they did the impossible and became heroes and somehow, they survived, even though they had bidden farewells a couple of hours ago because they had already understood what they had been facing. and nevertheless. they made it.
and none of them was celebrating.
mighty nein are basically essek's only friends. he knew them to be very unusual people, to put it lightly, loud and stubborn and completely inescapable once they consider you to be one of their own. and they showed him so much kindness and put so much faith in him, they were here playing the most atrocious music ever and digging clay in his backyard for a spell they invented just to help one of theirs and asking him if he could bring them pastries the day after they found out he was lying to them and had started a war. they were chaotic and weird and sometimes unbearable but most importantly they were carrying so much hope with them all this time - a hope they could end the war, a hope they could stop the angel of irons cult, a hope they could get better, a hope he could get better, and now, finally, that they could save their lost friend.
and that hope shattered, just like that, the moments after they'd already made the impossible. they saved so many souls - and then could not get back just that one.
for essek "my intentions were never good they were important" thelyss it just. shouldn't have mattered. they won. it could have been worse. people die and when they die they rarely come back. they should've been happy everyone else barely made it alive.
but for some reason, mighty nein being so defeated after they saved the world exposed him to that overwhelming feeling of injustice and unfairness. and i mean, there were many things essek considered to be unfair, but when i watched his first appearance and his interactions with mighty nein later on til their reunion in aeor arc, i wouldn't dare to guess that one of the things on that list would be something that personal. and personal not even to him.
the thing is, essek didn't even know who that guy was. why mighty nein cared about him so much. he had an idea, i guess, that he was their friend once, or someone in that body was. it was also a person who wanted to unleash a terrifying horrific aberration onto the material plane. it was a person very dedicated to killing essek and his friends - and they still didn't take any pleasure in fighting him. essek didn't feel strongly about lucien or molly, because he never knew them.
i don't think he mourned his death and failed resurrection. he mourned mighty nein's hope, the one they put in him when they had no reason to, the one they offered yasha in the cathedral and the one they kept after the spell for veth failed and the one they carried til the very end because they wanted it to reach molly. they had saved people with this hope. they had saved nations. they had saved the world. but they ended up feeling like it hadn't even been worth anything.
how desperate would it feel, witnessing people who for some reason always saw good in you when they absolutely shouldn't, who made literal miracles out of nothing, who ended wars and fought gods and tricked the hags and freed cities from horrors beyond anyone's comprehension purely because they thought it was the right thing to do and also loved their friends this much, silently crying over a dead body they couldn't bring back to life? how desperate would it feel to realise that with all your knowledge about time you dedicated your life to and threw away any principles for, you can't undo this? no one can. some things are left to fate alone and this time it wasn't kind to them. no matter how much good they did, they still got slapped in the face.
and it was, i think, such a genuine moment of empathy. like, essek is the character who prefers to put up a facade and act distant and self-composed but this time he just. walked away unable to watch this. the could only say to fjord that it wasn't fair. even when he was caught off guard in nicodranas he was able to explain himself and his motives to an extent even though he was a nervous wreck whose extra important plan went to hell the second the only people he cared about appeared. this time he had nothing to elaborate on. it just wasn't fair. it wasn't fair his friends didn't get what they wanted the most. it wasn't fair he couldn't do anything to make it right.
it is such a sad and beautiful and even cathartic scene because it is about person who started a war that destroyed so many lives - and then met this ragtag group of weirdos who saw a lonely stand-offish guy and said "hey, let's be friends!" and didn't even wait for him to answer. he saw them being serious and calculated and he saw them being ridiculous and extremely stupid, he saw their mistrust to outsiders and their loyalty to each other, he made spells with them and paid a visit to their hot tub, he ate their stale pastries and drank their hot chocolate mixed with whiskey, he was welcomed amongst them and in their wonderful home, both in xhorhas before they even found out what he had done and in the tower when they already knew - and then, he saw them mourning their loss, defeated and helpless, and he, a person who believed there were things more important than whole nations, let alone just one life, couldn't help but share the pain they felt. a pure display of compassion from someone who detached himself from it, who didn't believe he could grow into a better person capable of it again, but became one nonetheless without even realising it
#sorry. i cannot shut up about this. this scene stuck with me the moment i saw it and i just couldn't get it out of my head#i mean. i liked essek well enough. i just got attached to other characters more. but then 'it's not fair' happened and it sealed the deal#it was just. so beautiful. so sincere. so important for a character who just started to learn how to care about people#his reaction wasn't intentional. it didn't change anything. but it showed how humane he had become. how deeply he cared#mighty nein are no joke pal#they're gonna make you feel all these unknown emotions like sympathy and love and affection even when they're incredibly painful#essek experiencing closeness and attachment in all their forms. as something beautiful and something aching. is so important to me#they saved him because they had good hearts! and these good hearts sparked so much joy around them!#but if a good heart grants you an ability to experience joy so profoundly. it makes everything else feel like that#you get it. i hope you get it. anyway e140 did so much psychic damage on me i probably will never recover#in a good way mostly <3 but yeah. yeah. it makes me feel a little insane#the mighty nein#essek thelyss#critical role

The Fall Guy
This movie has completely taken control over my existence, so here are the little things I love most about it, in no particular order.
The triple meaning of the title.
Colt not just being the fall guy in the sense of the stunt community, but also (almost) taking the fall for Henry's murder, and falling in love with Jody so deeply he'd basically die for her.
This is so cool, and I love the english language for it.
(Also, the little fall guy in the A? Perfection.)
The long shots.
My love for one-ers is just as big as Jody's, I guess.
The opening sequence is just so perfect.
Introducing the main characters, establishing Colt's and Jody's relationship and setting high stakes from the beginning with that stunt gone wrong.
This long shot shows you exactly what kind of movie you're gonna watch, and it's probably one of my favourite opening sequences in a movie ever.
This one is so perfect, too.
Jody trying to come up with answers for everyone, and keeping everything under control amuses me and stresses me out in equal messure.
And talking from the little personal experience I have, this sequence (and the whole movie for that matter) captures the work on set so accurately. It's truly amazing.
Long shots like this take so much time and effort to coordinate, and I just love, and appreciate it so much when movies do that. It's so impressive, and so fun to watch.
The prayer hands emoji.
Tom sending Colt nothing more than a prayer hands emoji because he just doesn't care about his well-being at all.
(I mean, he is in fact responsible for Colt's accident, so it's savage but not surprising.)
And then Colt giving that prick at his valet job the exact gesture because the guy acts like an asshole, and Colt couldn't care less about his crispy fiver.
Gold.
The script credits.
This is genius, and I love everything about it!
When you pause the movie and read everthing, you can see there are actual excerpts from the movie script, just a little modified, to fit the credits.
When I saw this for the first time it totally caught me by surprise, and now it is everything I never knew I needed.
This entire conversation.
Jody asking: "Did you fall?" is so ironic, I wanna scream.
Girl, of course he fell. FOR YOU!
And Colt is so high on whatever kind of drug they spiked his drink with, it's so endlessly funny to me.
Plus the way he just can't stop himself from telling Jody how beautiful she is over and over again, while completely ignoring her concern about his wounds.
Not to mention the extended version of this with that sponge bath discussion.
(Haven't seen the extendet cut yet but saw the scene on YouTube a milion times. I die everytime for multiple reasons.)
I could watch a whole movie of them just having a conversation like this.
Bonus:
Everytime I watch this I end up questioning my sanity, cause I feel like he spontaneously gets me pregnant with whatever it is he does here.
Every. Single. Time.
The way his eyes move from her eyes to her lips?
How Jody didn't just lose her mind, and all ability to breathe right then and there is beyond me.
Split Screen.
Another conversation that is just perfect in it's entirety.
The split screen opening exactly on the middle line of that shelf in the backround is satisfying me in a way that should put me in a mental facility.
Colt and Jody being so in sync and mirroring each other during this whole conversation, even after being apart for like 18 months is so special to me.
Colt knowing her favourite movies?
Their love for each other really is a different kind of epic.
The music matching the movie.
This is pure perfection, and I will never shut up about it.
The bottle equals the promise.
The container is turning around in an uncontrollable spin.
Also:
The Song "Dead Guy On Ice" from the original soundtrack is playing right when Colt says this to Gail on the phone.
Also, also:
"I was made for loving you" being woven into so many songs of the original soundtrack, and returning over and over throughout the whole movie in different ways.
It gives me James Bond vibes, and that just makes my heart smile.
I could go on and on about how much joy this sparks in me, everytime I watch the movie. It never fails to make me smile.
Jean Claude.
Nothing to add here, he's such a bon garçon.
Also, the fact that Colt and Jody just keep him after the happenings of the film, is probably my favourite thing ever.
(And I never knew I needed to hear Ryan Gosling speak french, but apparently it's something my body and soul desired very much.)
The post-it notes.
I am OBSESSED with this. Literally the most relatable thing about Tom Ryder. I love using post-it notes for all kinds of stuff when my brain gets overwhelmed, so this is just too real.
"FIRE MASSUSE"
"PRETEND YOU WENT TO JULLIARD"
"next role: paramedic vampire"
"is it MOMOA or MAMOA"
These are cracking me up so hard, I can't.
The cockroach story.
This seriously isn't talked about enough.
Right when I thought I couldn't fall any deeper for Colt's and Jody's relationship, they hit me with this.
Just imagine Colt on all fours, trying to usher that coakroach out of the room, while Jody just sits on the bed, telling him to get it done because she wants to start their movie night.
The domesticity this story implies is killing me in the best way possible.
You're so uncoordinated.
Another thing we just don't talk about enough is this scene right at the beginning:
This is kinda blurry but he totally bumbs her head on that cabinet behind her, and all she does is laugh it off and tell him he's uncoordinated.
And I just love the thought of Colt being this super profesh stuntman, always double-checking everything to make sure it's safe to do the stunts and roll the cameras, but going back to being so adorably clumsy the second the adrenaline rush wears off.
I will never get over this.
That's my girl.
Colt reacting like this when Gail says "That's my girl." is everything to me.
It's so cute, and you know it's exactly what he thought as well, 'cause he is so freaking proud of Jody. It's just so perfect.
"You blew yourself up!"
Tom telling Colt he's supposed to be dead 'cause he blew himself up, then proceeding to blow himself up is amazing writing, and shows how much thought went into this whole thing.
This movie is so good at foreshadowing itself, and I can't get enough of it.
Bonus:
He gets three bars on his phone, and then there are three explosions errupting.
This is satisfying my brain on another level. I can't even put it into words.
Spicy margaritas
Yet another beautiful conversation, that comes full-circle in the end.
Just casually planning a trip to the beach in the middle of the film production chaos, I love that for them.
(The way Ryan says "spicy margarita" is a beautiful thing, that haunts my dreams in the best way possible.)
In conclusion
I love this movie with all my heart, and I could talk hours and hours about how amazing it is.
There's so much more I love about it, but it's just too much to fit it all in here, so these are just the small things that make it extra special for me.
Honerable mentions go to:
- Dan Tucker, master of movie quotes, and best friend Colt Seavers could ever ask for.
- Colt Seavers' coffee side quest.
- The movie lighting a Ryan Gosling sized fire under my ass, prompting me to forget about life, and get a new obsession.
#the fall guy#the fall guy movie#the fall guy 2024#ryan gosling#i literally watched 28 movies in 3 weeks because of this man#emily blunt#aaron taylor johnson#winston duke#colt seavers#jody moreno#colt x jody#jolt#otp: I'd love another chance#tom ryder#dan tucker#jean claude#I didn't expect to fall in love with a movie this year#but here we are#anyway#this took several hours of my life#and I don't regret a single one#hope this sparks some joy in someones life

2. Horizon
Myrina never fully learned how to make connections with the people closest to her. Never quite learned how to open up the door to her heart all the way without them having to let themselves in.
It is well that those that love her knock anyway. Would that she could let them know her. When her daughter stumbles upon a piece of Myrina's past, she will have to settle for a half truth as an end result.
word count: 3,628
-
Myrina had lived in the Shroud long enough to know that thunderstorms posed a particular threat here—with the tree canopy so dense as to blot out the sun in most places, even the scent of rain on the wind was enough for most villages to begin to prepare for the worst case scenario.
Local volunteer firefighters and town watchtowers would remain on high alert, ready with countermeasures should lightning strike the treeline. As ever, she would be among them, covering the older trees and thatching rooves even as the storm so often caught them in the middle of their preparations.
On one such afternoon, a particularly brutal storm swept through their little Elmvale. The trees offered little and less protection from the rain pratically pelting the firefighters in horizontal sheets as they wrestled with the howling wind. Visibility was shot: even in the shade of the canopy, the tumultuous clouds overhead made it almost dark as night.
But the day was relatively kind, for all their efforts: but a single lightning bolt struck through the canopy and burned a hole large enough to fit a chocobo through before they had managed to smother the flames but beyond that, the village suffered no lasting damage.
That hole in the canopy line became something of a fascination for Myrina’s children even into the next day, after the smoke had thinned and the skies had begun to clear.
“Bet Rhalgr sent it,” her son, Uthengentle chirped as he hopped from one puddle to the next.
They were making a game of it; from what Myrina could parse, they were avoiding anywhere that wasn’t a puddle.
“The lightning?” asked her daughter, Serella, as she jumped after him.
“Yeah! That’s like his whole thing!” Uthengentle said with a pump of his fist in the air on his next leap. “He sends stuff like that down all the time! That’s what my Pops used to say! I bet it was a message!”
At that, Serella stood still in the next puddle she landed on and turned her head toward the newly formed gap in the treeline. Gray, overcast sky peered in on the village with its cosmic indifference from through the lingering smoke trails.
“Whoa,” she whispered, eyes wide in awe.
Even later that evening, with supper sorted and everyone settled in, Myrina still caught her daughter peering out of the window in the upstairs hallway, staring out toward the burned away boughs. It took little and less to shoo her gently to bed. Thus, Myrina slept soundly, certain that her daughter’s curiosity would be sated ere long.
She didn’t see much of Serella the next morning after breakfast, though the overcast day meant the family settled inside, content in their own spaces with only the sounds of fiddling hands to fill the gentle quiet.
Eventually, though, she heard the telltale march of little feet down the steps sometime in the late afternoon. She couldn’t help but smile at the sound: she knew it was her daughter in the way she jumped with both feet off the last step. It gave her away every time.
But there was a rustle of paper with each step, something Myrina hadn’t anticipated. Serella must have busy making something up in her room.
Sure enough, her daughter’s beautiful head of hair bounced in just above the kitchen table with her expression the very picture of seriousness and a loose sheet of paper fluttering in her grip.
“Have you seen Da?” she asked.
Myrina had in fact seen Hanvesh. He was in the den, likely reading or whittling if the lack of plucking strings was any indicator. But a small part of her felt hurt that she wasn’t asked regarding whatever little mystery their daughter got into this time.
Setting down her screwdriver and the clock she had been repairing, she said, “He might be in the den. Is there something I can help with?”
Alright, maybe a little more than a little hurt.
Her daughter demured at that, staring down at her own feet and shuffling her weight between them.
“Pro’bly not.” she mumbled at her own socks.
A far larger part of Myrina hurt at that. She fought a wince.
“I might be, you never know!” she tried again with a shaky smile, even as the words felt awkward and too loud.
But she hadn’t known how to connect with her daughter just yet; poor Uthengentle had been easy to bond with because something horrid and unjust had happened to him, too. Serella had no such loss to grapple with, sweet and earnest and untouched by the world as she was. Myrina felt shame that that was what it took for her to connect with either of her children. She felt shame that it was all she had to connect with anyone.
But her daughter’s eyes had never clouded over in haunted memories. In fighting so hard to shelter her daughter, she had made herself a stranger. She knew not how to engage with the unmarred and the innocent, even when they were her blood.
“...Nah, it’s okay. Got to do with stars and stuff, so, uhh...I’ll go check with him. Thanks, Ma!” Serella chirped, ignorant of her mother’s struggle as she skipped out of the kitchen in search of her father.
But it was a small house, just big enough for their little family. It was impossible not to hear them in the next room as she resumed her fiddling.
“I found a new constellation!” Serella told her father.
“A new constellation? You’re certain?” she heard her husband say with the right amount of awe in his voice for a child with a new discovery.
Because he knew how to connect with their children. With anyone. With everyone. Because that was the sort of person he was. He knew all about all kinds of things because he knew just how to ask.
Myrina didn’t know how to do that. She knew all the same things of people by silent observation, but never learned how to say things softly.
“I checked all the books in the library and all the star charts you gave me, and I didn’t see anything like this!” Serella declared with the sound of paper being smacked onto a table. “I can see it at night through that hole in the trees! Uthen thinks Rhalgr wanted us to see it!”
Myrina could picture her daughter’s face perfectly: she always got this bright gleam in her mismatched eyes when she had a mystery to solve, with a big smile that showed all her little baby teeth in an expression that dared the gods themselves to tell her she couldn’t find the answer.
Serella was her father’s daughter, after all.
The screwdriver Myrina had in her hand was far too large for the next step in repairs. She busied herself with finding one of her smaller tools in her bag.
“That’s quite the effort—well, now.” Hanvesh mused with the sound of shuffling paper.
In her mind’s eye, Myrina was sat across from her husband in the den, watching the way his brow would quirk the way it always did when something caught his attention. His head would always angle toward the opposite side as the eyebrow that arched, without fail, and she could see the way it tilted in that moment he picked up the paper and examined it.
“I don’t think I’ve seen this star pattern ‘afore in all my life, Little Acorn!” he said, though Myrina had known him long enough to tell when he was hiding something. “Say, do you mind if I keep this to take a look for myself later?”
“‘Kay!” she chirped.
That had been the end of it, apparently. Serella ran off to play, and Hanvesh followed not long after, ambling out with his cane thumping in time with him.
A bad pain day, then. Myrina set the pot on the stove and began to brew his medicinal tea for when he came in.
Except she hadn’t even finished steeping it before she heard him head straight for the kitchen.
She turned just in time to see Hanvesh join her, still holding that paper in his free hand. His expression was a queer one; it hovered somewhere between serious and playful, in that strange liminal space he occupied when he intended to butter her up for something important.
As if he needed to.
“You’ll never guess what our daughter has discovered,” Hanvesh said conversationally.
“A new constellation, by all accounts.” Myrina answered plainly.
At that, he snorted a laugh and said, “Aye, that’s what she believes. But would you believe me if I told you you’d recognize it better than I?”
As he asked this, he revealed the drawing on the paper: less a sketch and more a series of scribbled stars, one for each light she saw through the treeline.
Far too many to be a constellation; easily over a dozen dots, all arranged in a strange pyramid.
“Says she saw these after that storm the other day. Funny, the angle from the village points north, too far out to be the Shroud—”
Ah. Myrina might have known. Little wonder why she would need “buttering up,” then.
“Not a constellation, then.” she sighed and handed the paper back.
Hanvesh did not take it from her. “It’d be good to hear it from you, you know. What it really is.”
Who you really are, he did not add.
Of course it would be. If she knew how to do that. If she knew how to be a mother and a partner and a person—
“I don’t know, meri jaan,” she said around a heavy sigh.
She hadn’t even finished the exhale before he reached for her hands, gentle and sweet, as he leaned on his good leg to press close.
“Would it be so horrible if she knew her mother, mon cœur?” he asked, not unkindly and half into her cheek before he planted a kiss there.
If anyone would understand why Myrina might insist that yes, it would be so horrible, it would be her husband. That he would ask regardless meant he didn’t intend to let this go.
That it was important enough not to. That it mattered.
“I shan’t say a word,” he promised her, and when he squeezed her hands it became clear she had hidden her panic poorly. “Ultimately, it is your story to tell, mon cher.”
There was never a time he left her side without a kiss to her forehead, and this time was no exception. Cane in hand, he began to make his way back to the study.
Hovering near the window in the den on his way, he said aloud and certainly to no one in particular, “Methinks the sky’ll clear ‘round sunset, give or take a bell or two.”
He left it at that. She hated that he had, just a little, even as she knew he had the right of it.
Hanvesh had made rabbit stew out of her catch that night for dinner, and their little ones had been eager to help her make bread.
The conversation at the dinner table never veered toward Serella’s “constellation,” lively as ever though it was. It was nice, always, to sit and watch her family happily chatter about their day. To bask in the warmth they exuded, the warmth they folded her into.
But her thoughts were malms away from the table in that moment. Despite not having set foot there in almost a decade, a massive gate of wrought iron and stone cast a looming shadow over her thoughts.
Realistically, she knew she could not keep her children from knowing forever—even if she did not tell them, their school would doubtless be covering broader Eorzean maps and history any day now. Though her name would not be there, the shape of the place would be unmistakable, and then the questions would follow; chief among them, the question of the household’s secrecy surrounding it.
Nay, better to at least try.
There was about a two-bell span in the evening, after the house had gone to sleep, that Myrina knew her daughter would often shove pillows under her blankets and sneak down to the study, where all those star charts and fairytales were within her grasp, with time uninterrupted and free. Doubtless, Serella was eager to be nose-deep in some map or other, still dedicated to her new discovery.
Myrina knew a better mother might try to reign that in, to stamp down a bad habit the moment it was found. But she had been one such child once, scurrying in the shadows of her own home, delighting in the thrill of sneaking without true fear of harm. She could find no good in denying her daughter the chance to befriend the dark.
Tonight, though, she could give her daughter something better: an answer.
As expected, her ears perked at the sound of little feet trying to cling to the sides of the stair steps to reduce their creaking. In an effort to startle her daughter the least, Myrina waited until the footsteps hit the bottom before slipping out .
And, as expected, Serella spun around with such shock that she nearly sent herself to the floor when she met her mother’s eyes from the top of the stairs.
“You’re not in trouble,” she promised her daughter around the lump in her throat, holding up her hands as if to show she was unarmed. “There’s something I wanted to show you.”
Her daughter regarded her with wide eyes, watching her as she closed the distance.
“What do you mean?” Serella asked hesitantly, her whole body already bent in the shape of cornered prey.
Hard not to wince at that, but Myrina managed.
“I heard,” she said, and produced her daughter’s crude star map, “that you found yourself a constellation?”
Serella looked at her own drawing like she was somehow in trouble.
“Well…yeah. I mean,” she said in a halting voice that snagged on her own nerves. “I can’t find it in any of the books or maps I’ve been able to check. It’s up in the sky. What else could it be?”
Before she could talk herself out of it again, Myrina asked, “Would you like to know?”
That got a look of surprise on her daughter’s face, her spine unfurling as the fear left her.
Then, as though the two of them were conspiring, she leaned in an whispered, “Do you know, Ma?”
At that, Myrina couldn’t help but crack a smile as she motioned with her head toward the front door and said, “Something like that. C’mon— get your shoes, and I’ll show you.”
With that, she led her curious daughter out through the front door and toward the treeline.
When she stopped in front of the tree that had been struck, she peered up through the burned branches.
Had she not known what those little twinkling lights were, she might also have thought they were stars; even with this hole, the trees above hadn’t thinned so much that the sky was in unobscured view.
“This one, right?” she asked, pointing at the gap.
When Serella nodded, Myrina mirrored the gesture, knelt before her daughter, and offered an open arm.
“Here, hang on to me.” Myrina instructed.
When Serella tilted her head in clear confusion, Myrina’s smile returned as she said, “We’re going to fly for just a moment. So hang on tight.”
Gasping and gawking, her daughter scrambled, her little arms wrapping around her shoulders and squeezing.
For as unfamiliar as she was with laying her heart bare with her children, she knew without conscious thought how to swing her daughter onto her hip, arm wrapped around her like she was a toddler all over again.
It had been a while since Myrina had properly ridden the wind…but dragons never forget how to spread their wings. They who have supped on that selfsame aether were no exception.
Just as well. Short though the trip might have been, it still required a few hops around the dense canopy branches so as to hit the bigger ones, though just before breaking through the treeline, she made sure to wind up her leap as far and as high as she possibly could.
Might as well give her daughter a good view—nay, the best view she could.
Bursting through the treeline felt almost like breaking through the surface of water—for as much as she had come to love Gridania, its dense treeline made it easy to forget the world beyond and above it. It was easy to drown in the leaves.
Now, though, the whole world stretched out in every direction further than the eye could see. Shaded treetops stretching out as far as they eye could see.
And above that, all, the glittering canopy hung higher than any tree. The stars welcomed her and her daughter into the rest of the world in that moment. The moon fair set the world alight that they might see its splendor.
Dragoons were ever taught to land lightly and hover on the barest of points, and much like their penchant for moments of flight, it was a muscle that never truly fell out of practice.
So it was nothing for her to perch on the natural “net” of the treetops, so dense as to support their weight on one of the highest branches as she settled in and set her daughter on her lap.
For so long as she drew breath, Myrina would never forget the look on Serella’s face, staring straight up at the sky—nowhere near where her newfound “constellation” was, mind, but just staring, unblinking, at the expanse of the universe with tears rolling down her cheeks as she took in the width and breadth of the night sky for the first time in her life.
“Wow…” Serella whispered. “I’ve seen it in pictures, but…”
Her words trailed off in a sniffle, even as she did nothing to wipe her tears away.
Myrina let her process this new discovery, her head on a swivel as if she would never see the sky again and had to commit it to memory.
With a little lean toward her daughter, she murmured, “Just ahead of us. There’s your constellation—but look closer.”
Following Myrina’s outstretched hand, Serella at last scrubbed her face of tears and looked out, out, out beyond the treeline, on the far edge of the horizon. Dozens of lights twinkled back, all concentrated in the shape of a spire.
Or more accurately, several spires.
“It’s…a building…?” Serella trailed off, squinting at the outline that encased her newly discovered stars and leaning in as though it will help her see.
Eyes widening as she straightened again, she squeaked, “...No, it’s a castle!”
Oh, how far and near to the truth she was. The truth might well break her heart.
Despite everything, Myrina couldn’t help but smile as she said, “Something like that. It’s where I’m from.”
Serella’s head had never whipped toward her so fast.
“You came from over there?!” she exclaimed.
“Of a certainty. It’s—”
In her mind, Ishgard was as constant as the Twelveswood itself. Two homes, alike in cruelty, tumultuous as a roiling tide; made of the same waters and always destined to crash together but never unite.
Myrina could not tell that to her child. Not when she looked up at her with such wide, inquisitive eyes. She could not be the first one to take that away from her.
“The…castle, you called it? It sits on a mountaintop with the surrounding town. It’s called Ishgard.”
Serella repeated the name slowly, as if she were testing its authenticity.
“What’s it like, Ma?” she asked.
Just as Myrina had feared.
Slowly, she found the words to skirt around the horrid nature of the Theocracy. Staring out at the myriad lights that flickered so far away, her tone almost carried her voice to those windowsills she had so often pressed her nose against.
“The people there—they’re warm and kind. For the most part, that is,” Myrina started slowly, because that was true enough. “But they’re…it’s…”
Swallowing, she tried again, “No one is allowed to be their truest selves, unless they are inherently cruel. No one is able to truly be friends—with one another or with those not from there. It is a place cursed with loneliness and strife.”
As she expected, Serella’s tear-glossed eyes widened in shock and hurt at this revelation. Of course her tender little heart couldn’t bear the thought of such a place.
Rather than a fresh wave of tears, she shifted in her mother’s lap to face her fully as she asked, “Then we can make friends with everyone! Then they won’t be lonely anymore! Oh, can’t we go mom? Please?”
Myrina knew that look on her daughter’s face. That bright gleam in her mismatched eyes with a big smile that showed all her little baby teeth in an expression that dared the gods themselves to tell her she couldn’t fix an entire town with love.
Her sweet, innocent little girl. May she never know the harsh truths of the world—or may she defy them upon discovery.
With that little prayer in the back of her mind, she kissed the crown on her daughter’s head and promised her, “When you’re old enough to hold a sword and draw a bow, sweetheart, we’ll go together.”
Time had a funny way of half-breaking most promises and poorly keeping the rest. Twenty and two summers later, Serella would cross the Arc of the Worthy, driven there by the harshest truths and the cruelest lies of the world and trying not to wonder what her mother might make of it all.

Wait crying again bc I was rewatching The Intruder today (episode 4 of season 1) and I realized that like. The glyphs represent a few things in the narrative but one thing that's consistent is they're always there when Luz doesn't feel like she's good enough on her own. They appear to her as comfort in moments of self depreciation or self doubt, or she coincidentally learns them in episodes where she faces her fear of rejection or makes a mistake (at least this is true in terms of the first four base glyphs she discovers). It's the titans way of saying "you may have to do things differently, but you can do anything they can do" to Luz bc he cares about her
AND THEN. IN WATCHING AND DREAMING. WHEN THE TITAN PASSES ON AND THE GLYPHS DON'T WORK ANYMORE. IT'S BECAUSE NOW LUZ FINALLY FEELS LIKE SHE'S GOOD ENOUGH, ALL ON HER OWN. SHE'S LEARNED THAT SHE HAS INTRINSIC WORTH AS A PERSON AND SHE DOESN'T NEED TO MAKE UP FOR WHO SHE IS. SHE MIGHT DO THINGS DIFFERENTLY BUT SHE CAN DO EVERYTHING ANOTHER WITCH CAN DO- THIS TIME WITH HER OWN, MORE PERSONAL ACCESSIBILITY TOOL (HER PALISMEN) INSTEAD OF THE ONE THE TITAN GAVE HER. MAN!!!!!
#ramblings of a lunatic#the owl house#toh#toh meta#luz noceda#the glyphs are there for everyone who doesn't feel good enough#eda and lilith after losing their magic...the kids overcome with exhaustion and fear in watching and dreaming#hell you could even argue that philip uses them to cope with the unspeakable horror that these non-person witches-#-could be better than him at something! gasp! the audacity!#he uses them to harm and co-opts the titans language to make sure that no witch could have a chance of thinking they're better than him#(bc again. philip is not afraid of witches. he hates this. his background is not a literal investigation into Christian superstition-#-it is a non-literal parallel to modern day conservatives.)#(they're afraid of what they don't understand but much more than that they hate it-#-that's why you can't change their opinions solely w/ rhetoric and argument)#ANYWAY. I've heard some ppl stressing over the amount of ppl being vocally negative in the maintag recently#and i see it too. think it's just a thing that happens when shows end? ppl pop out of the woodwork to be like#''well i never liked it in the first place!''#like. okay. good for you ig#anyway i hope this sparks some joy in the maintag instead#that's all I'm here to do#i stopped watching the episode to type this post i should go finish it

So… Lee✨
I heard you got badly bruised, mind if I check? ;)
Also how did you get that bad?
~Brina
(Waaa first roleplay ask! >.< I hope i do well!)
Lee had been resting under a tree when Brina approached him fearlessly.
He opens his eye, his lips twitching, the shadow of a smile playing there. "You're a bold one, aren't you?"
He sits upright, then stands, looking Brina up and down in contemplation. "Bold and handsome. But much too young for me."
He buries his hands in his pockets and leans backward against the tree he'd been sleeping under.
His eye sweeps up to search for the blue of the sky, but there are only clouds. "Whyever did I get this bad..."
Lee's pockets shift as he clenches his fists. He sighs, closes his eye and shrugs half heartedly. "Well. I suggest you don't put your trust in someone without knowing their limits first."
Then he straightens up, gives him a polite nod and walks off to find a more peaceful spot to continue his nap.
#ask answered#ask rp#thanks for the ask hun!#khr ocs#oc Lee#oh gosh i haven't even introduced this guy yet ^^;#hope he sparks joy anyway!

Sometimes venturing onto the For You side of Twitter sparks joy.
Based take. Shoujo and Josei are fucking top notch, both in characters and art style (how can you not think they’re beautiful?)
“Ruined the JJK and MHA fandoms” is WILD. I avoid fandoms for the most part (except perusing tumblr for the occasional fucking thesis women write about character motivations i love you women <3) because they usually suck. Seriously, I kept up with OPM for a bit because it was entertaining but holy shit the subreddit (very much full of men) is literally just… sexy woman. More sexy woman. Memes about artist constantly drawing sexy woman. Memes. Occasional power scaling arguments. Low quality page colorings of the exact same page. There is NOTHING. How the hell can women ruin the fandom when the fandom IS the women?!
It’s the women creating in depth analyses on characters; it’s the women writing fanfiction, creating doujinshis; it’s the women creating fandom centered accounts; it’s the women buying every new merch piece that comes out AND giving free advertising by posting about it online. And then men will go on and rag on women for doing all these things. It’s infuriating.
Longevity of a series is also something these idiots ignore. Seriously, look at Katekyo Hitman Reborn. The manga ended in 2012 and the creator is working on a different series. Katekyo Hitman Reborn still gets regular merch releases. This is a series that ended over a decade ago and still has an incredibly dedicated fanbase of, I wonder who, that regularly spends enough money to keep it consistent. You cannot look me in the eyes and tell me that series is supported mainly by men. I do not care how hard Amano Akira tried to alienate her female fans with her treatment of the female characters you know exactly whos spending the money based on who is constantly getting merch (minus the titular character, because of course he has to be there.)
Honestly I don’t give a damn that fandom can often be absolute insanity; you get a group of people together and it’s always going to be a shitshow, that isn’t unique to fandom, people just like to pretend it is because as always, there’s an undercurrent of misogyny because people know women carry that shit but they only want to acknowledge it when they can use it to criticize them.
I love that she came for the JJK fandom as well. I’ve been following the series because honestly it is really fucking funny because it is the epitome of shounen tropes. The author literally baked them into the world. Explaining your abilities to the opponent makes them stronger. So this entire series you get giant pages of just white with text explaining every little fucking thing like theres a narrator standing over your shoulder making sure you can’t possibly miss anything on the first read. Fuck dude, I don’t mind exorbitant amounts of text in my manga, but you cannot be serious in pretending that is good writing. There’s a deus ex machina that every character can pull out of their ass called a binding vow. Black flash also falls into this category.
Hell, the latest arc has literally just been flashback after flashback playing during the battle of the characters forming a bunch of plans in preparation for the fight we currently are following. This is genuinely one of my most hated tropes. The characters just get off screen power ups that then get handwaved as “well we showed you the flashback right?” there is NO anticipation, any excitement you feel for the battle is purely manufactured rather than genuine. It’s not “I can’t wait to see how the growth I followed of these characters affects the battle” it’s “wow, what cool ability will they pull out of their ass next?” I hate it I loathe it and it’s even worse with emotional moments. Why couldn’t you write this into the story in the first place? Why are you giving it to me in a shitty flashback?
Maybe I didn’t explain it well enough because I launched into a rant. The reason I hated it so much is because it forced the reader to be an observer rather than an active participant in the manga. Everything is spoonfed to you. You don’t need to reread the chapters over and over to put together the pieces on how, where, and why each action took place, the author does that for you. You don’t see everything from a new perspective when you read it a second time, catching lots of things you may have missed because you’re not allowed to miss anything the author deems important.
I enjoy this manga. There is good things about it. But it is nowhere near the god manga (“kamige” would be the term if it was a visual novel; I don’t know a manga equivalent) men like to pretend it is. It genuinely seems like they think everything being explained every page is good writing.
Based and succinct.
Anyway, you shouldn’t restrict yourself from experiencing specific genres because they’re for “the lessers” because that’s actually fucking cringe and maybe you should touch a Josei manga, or even a Shoujo manga. Maybe it’ll open your eyes and you’ll realize, hey, women’s media is actually- oh who the fuck am I kidding just pull the trigger.
#taking the bait and getting mad about things that dont matter dot rtf#i would genuinely love to write actual well thought out well written and well researched essays on the shit im into#but going on barely edited rants is easier and gives me those feel good chemicals faster#i started this with twitter sparking joy then proceeded to go on a rant about how much hate fills my heart#i hope my ranting is at least somewhat coherent because my thought process is incredibly scattered right now#i also rant about JJKs writing because i was going to do that one of these days anyway but i read my sleeper activation phrase in a tweet#basically im mad at how much men ignore womens contributions to the series they claim to enjoy#no evidence is ever good enough for them either#you have a japanese study showing the sex division for a popular series has an even 50:50 split?#it doesnt fit the exact parameters that i believe it should! (angry mention about ‘the gays’ when they werent even brought up)#also yeah im sure when theres an even amount of both women and men watching something ONLY the men actually contribute right#ask me about my opinions i dont bite ;^)#also i need a nap because i have been awake far too long hello insomnia#was about to go to sleep then i was provoked and had to fight (opened twitter and then rant on a blog out in nowhere)#goodnight (its noon)

anon bcs I am too shy to ask directly on the post but-- how did you find nicke's dynamo jersey? bcs I had half a mind of buying one of his jerseys, and that one is beautiful, but I wouldn't know where to start looking. thank u so much and sorry for the silly question ^^""
haha no worries!! i am always happy to share jersey tips ♡ so the dynamo jersey was kind of a special case — if i had bought it while he was playing, i could have quite easily gotten it from lutch usa, which is the best source for khl jerseys! but during that lockout i was like. in high school and had no real disposable income so on and so forth so it’s just been on my wishlist for ages. i had an alert set on ebay and i did check fairly regularly and just got very lucky!!
if you want just a nicke jersey in general, my favorite places to purchase jerseys new are hockey authentic, coolhockey, and jersey baron! but those are quite pricey — i try to wait for sales when i can for the first two especially. jersey baron is an ebay store so fewer sales BUT also a good place to look for junior and college jerseys. for shl jerseys i’ve heard good things about this store — i haven’t purchased from them yet so can’t fully vouch for them but i do plan to buy something from them at some point, especially since they offer to help find pretty much any shl jersey if they don’t have it!
i also like snagging jerseys secondhand when i can find them in good condition; mercari and ebay are good places to find authentic jerseys at a cheaper price point. i recommend avoiding fanatics branded jerseys if possible — they’re lower quality and much harder to resell for a good price if you ever want to do that! i always look for reebok or adidas secondhand, and sometimes there’ll be even older jerseys in good shape, starter and mitchell & ness and the like! :)
#i hope this was at least somewhat helpful ♡ it’s a silly hobby of mine but it does spark joy#my running bit of wearing a different team’s jersey to stars games is going to be SO funny next year when i split season tickets with my pal#anyway if there’s anything else i can help with or more specific questions please let me know!!#meg.askbox

#lol i need 2 know SO many more words.#like. great that i have now solidly incorporated ‘Zeichentrickfilme’ in2 my working vocab#but uh#pace our friend Duo i gotta say i’m not sure how much use i’m gonna get out of that one#vs i still dk how 2 say like. ‘depressed.’ ‘genderqueer.’ lol#at least thx 2 C— i’ve got ‘dicke Katze’ down. Kaffee- und Katzeklatsch: ein Blog#also like. do i gotta caps properly in a blog context. like i will if i have 2 but like. does not spark joy#everybody wants 2 teach you standard orthography which is great but like. some of us want 2 understand the stylistic impact of rulebreaking!#anyway. in unrelated conclusion it IS maddening that i know basically 0 swedish BUT when i reach for eg ‘nothing’ i sure do end up at#‘ingenting’ before ‘nichts.’ similarly ‘och’ before ‘und’ sometimes. deeply unuseful!!#however i guess maybe someday the like. 2 phrases i remember will come in handy 4 me#‘du är vacker. jag vill knulla dig i röven. vill du också det?’#one can only hope 😇#anyway. peut-être que demain je bloggerai en français. qui sait#my mission‚ should i choose to accept it: bastardizing ALL languages i only half-remember 🤘#in conclusion i vaguely remember that in the construction ‘something Adjective’ you caps the adjective but not why lol#i mean i assume it’s for Substantive Reasons but like. if it’s modifying a pronoun why is it a substantive. however.#ours (whomst suck at deutsch) not 2 reason why‚ &c.#right. okay. good morning!!

wrote a hundred thousand words over the last two months, in all, and god. i wish that, at some point, it would feel like enough.
instead, when i try to stop, try to relax, try to take a break (because i know this isn't sustainable for me), i am just filled with this feeling of, 'why were you doing this to begin with; no-one cares,'.
the only cure for that is to keep going until i physically can't anymore, to prove that i still care. to prove that i don't actually hate what i create.
#anyway. venting.#yeah--the depression's sinking in.#no matter how hard i push myself and no matter how hard i love the thing i'm writing.#there is no joy sparked by progress or process.#it's not even about being thought of as a good or bad writer to what few people i show my work to.#it's just about hoping that at some point i'll feel excited about something i know i love again.#at some point i'll string the words together in a way that sparks it. that brings it back.#if it was ever there to begin with.#it never ends. even when it does.#i hope you have a nice day though friend. i sincerely do.
