صفيحة فلسطينية / Safiha falastinia (Palestinian topped flatbread)
Etymology and origins
صَفِيحَة (“ṣafīḥa”), also transliterated “sfiha” and “sfeeha,” is a flatbread eaten in Palestine, Lebanon, and Syria, comprising a yeasted dough topped with a filling made from ground lamb or beef, spices, and chopped aromatics and vegetables. It may also be called “اللَحْم بالعَجِين” (“al-laḥm b al-‘ajīn,” “meat with dough”)—this phrase is the source of the Turkish “lahmacun” and the Armenian “Լահմաջո” (“lahmadjo”), which describe a closely related dish.
The word “صَفِيحَة” literally means “thin plate” or “sheet”; it comes from the root ص ف ح (ṣ f ḥ), which produces words related to flatness. Compare for example “صَفَّحَ” (“ṣaffaḥa”) “to flatten,” “صَفْحَة” (“ṣafḥa”) “page,” and “صَافَحَ” (“ṣāfaḥa”) “to shake hands.” This term has been borrowed into Brazilian Portuguese as "esfirra" or "esfiha," when the flatbread was brought to Brazil by Levantine immigrants—mostly Christians—beginning in the 1890s. Today, esfiha has been naturalized as a "'typical' Brazilian bar food"; it is said that the typical resident of São Paulo is a "Japanese who speaks Portuguese with an Italian accent while eating an esfiha."
In English, lahmacun (also transliterated "lahmajoun") is sometimes called "Armenian pizza." Similarly, it may be called "صفيحة الأرمنية" ("safiha al-'armaniyya"), "Armenian safiha," in Palestine, indicating that it is regarded as a borrowing from the local Armenian immigrant community. In Armenia, lahmadjo is a very thin, soft flatbread typically topped with beef or lamb, tomatoes, tomato paste, bell peppers, onion, garlic, parsley, red chili paste, and black pepper. With Palestinian safiha, lamb is the typical choice of meat; the dough may be thicker, and enriched with the addition of milk, milk powder, or yoghurt; bell peppers are ommitted; and fried pine nuts may be added. Palestinian restaurateur Nassar Odeh remembers lahmadjo being served in Jerusalem's Old City decades ago; he says that "Armenian dishes" such as this have become "part of the Palestinian culture."
Though the Arabic-derived "lahmadjo" and related terms may be heard, [1] the most common Armenian-language name for this dish is "լոշմիս" ("loshmis")—presumably from "լոշ" "losh" "lavash, thin bread" + "միս" "mis" "meat." Some Western Armenian variations on the name reverse this order (meat-dough, rather than dough-meat): "մսաշոթ" ("msashot"), from "մսա" "msa" "meat" + "շոթ" "shot" "thin bread"; and "մսալոշ" ("msalosh"), from "մսա" "msa" "meat" + "լոշ" "losh" "thin bread."
The dish
A common part of everyday Palestinian cooking, صَفَائِح ("ṣafā'iḥ"; plural of "ṣafīḥa") are often eaten as a snack or a portable lunch. They may also be served as a مَزَّة ("mazza"; "appetizer") for عِيد ("'īd"; "feast," "holiday"; often transliterated "Eid") or Christmas.
Safa'ih are shaped into pinwheels in the port city of يَافَا ("Yāfā"; often transliterated "Yaffa" or "Jaffa"), stuffed with ground meat or spinach. In the Bethlehem region the topping is often mixed with tahina, as well as vinegar or lemon juice, and perhaps pomegranate molasses. Other versions of the meat topping omit tahina and vinegar, and are more tomato-heavy instead.
This recipe is for Bethlehem mazza-style safa'ih, with thick crust that's crisp on the outside and light and fluffy on the inside. Vinegar and pomegranate molasses provide a bright, slightly fruity lift to the topping, while tahina grounds it with a toasty, nutty aroma. Black pepper, allspice, and a green chili pepper add complexity and heat.
[1] There is a proliferation of possible spellings for "lahmadjo" in Armenian, which would indicate that it is a loanword (probably via Turkish, ultimately from Arabic). These spellings include "լամաջո" ("lamadjo") [common]; "լահմաջո" ("lahmadjo"); "լահմաջու" ("lahmadjou"); "լահմաջոն" ("lahmadjon"); "լահմաջուն" ("lahmadjoun") [literary; uncommon]; "լահմաջին" ("lahmadjīn"); and "լահմաջի" ("lahmadjī") [rare]. The letter "ջ" is pronounced as "dj" (IPA: [d͡ʒ]) in Eastern Armenian and a "tch" (IPA: [t͡ʃʰ]) in Western Armenian (timestamp: 40:33).
Support Palestinian resistance by donating to Palestine Action’s bail fund; buying an e-sim for distribution in Gaza; or donating to help a family leave Gaza.
Ingredients:
Makes 24 small safa'ih. Serves 24 as an appetizer, or 6-7 as a main dish.
For the dough:
5 cups (600g) white flour
1 cup (230g) non-dairy yoghurt (لبن رائب) (I used soy)
1/2 cup (125 ml) olive oil
1 1/2 Tbsp (15g) dry yeast
1/2 Tbsp (4g) kosher salt
1 tsp (5g) sugar
A scant cup (220g) of water
A more "everyday" preparation of this dish might make larger, flatter safa'ih out of a dough without dairy. This holiday variant includes yoghurt and makes smaller, fluffier safa'ih; but the yoghurt may be omitted (or milk or milk powder may be added) without injury, and the flatbreads can be made any shape you like.
Leila al-Haddad writes that, in Gaza, white flour used to be eaten as a treat and for special occasions before it later came to replace whole wheat white flour in many kitchens.
For the topping:
500g ground beef substitute (as a replacement for minced lamb)
1 medium tomato, minced
1 medium onion, minced
1-2 green chili peppers, minced
2 tsp kosher salt (1 tsp table salt)
3/4 tsp black pepper
3/4 tsp allspice; or Palestinian 7-spice / mixed spices (بهار مشكل)
1/4 cup white tahina
2 Tbsp pomegranate molasses
2 Tbsp white vinegar, or lemon juice
For a tomato filling, omit the tahina and vinegar, and instead use 2 Tbsp tomato paste; or 8 diced or puréed tomatoes, cooked down.
Instructions:
For the dough:
1. Combine all dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl.
2. Make a well in the center and add in the yoghurt, olive oil, and water. Mix them together and then combine them with the rest of the dough. Add water or flour as needed to obtain a soft, slightly tacky dough.
3. Knead the dough on a clean surface for 5-10 minutes, until it bounces back when pressed. Allow to rise, covered, in an oiled bowl for 1-2 hours, until doubled in size.
For the filling:
1. Mince vegetables, or run them through a food processor. Mix all filling ingredients together.
To assemble:
1. Divide dough in half, and then half again; roll out each quarter of the dough into a cylinder and cut it into six equal pieces.
2. Roll each piece of dough into a ball between your hands, and then flatten it into a disc about 1” (2 1/2 cm) high and 3” (8cm) wide. Place on a baking sheet prepared with parchment paper, leaving an inch of space between each circle.
3. Press the center of each dough circle down to create a crust around the edge. Add a few spoonfuls of filling to the center of each safiha and press flat.
4. Bake safa'ih in the middle of an oven at 450 °F (230 °F) for 25-30 minutes, until crust is golden brown.
Serve as an appetizer alongside vegetable salads, pickles, olives, &c.

The Caged Bird Still Sings Part 8
Hello! Thanks to WIP Wednesday I managed to finish a chapter of each of the stories so things are moving right a long with this story and the others. With any luck, I'll have Secret Tunnel (game show AU) finished by the time the weekend is over with. Fingers crossed.
In this Steve goes on a bit of a roller coaster of emotion. Also a bit of naughtiness in the middle, so 18+
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5 Part 6 Part 7
~
Steve put together the package he had be planning after he ate his burger. It was no chili burger from Benny’s but it was really good. It had caramelized onions with a thousand island dressing on the bun which was some kind of fancy bread.
Now the fries, that was something to rave about. They were seasoned and deep fried. He had eaten almost all of them before he even touched the burger.
Then once he was done with the package, he went down to the front desk for them to mail it off. Now he was at loose ends again. He could go back up to his room, but he really didn’t want to.
It had only been three days since he got kicked out and he was bored. So he looked around the lobby for inspiration. Then he spotted a discarded newspaper. Probably someone who wanted to read the financial stuff and found their stocks had tanked.
That was what his dad did every day. He didn’t understand it anyway. You were paying for nothing. Even when things were really good, you didn’t want to sell your shares because things might get better. But if the stock drops than you’ve lost money. It was gambling in the worst sort of way.
But he picked it up and began flipping through the pages, looking for the movie listings. When he found them he looked through the ads to see if there was anything good. Which there wasn’t.
With a sigh, Steve put the paper down. He chewed on his nails for a moment or two. Then he snapped his fingers. He’ll call Dustin. See if the kids wanted to go to the arcade. He had money to burn, so why not let the kids go nuts for a couple of hours.
He looked at his watch and then winced. Oops! Maybe that would be better for tomorrow as it was way later than he thought. But he could call Eddie.
That brought an instant smile to face and he dashed back upstairs. He walked into the room just as the phone began ringing. His smile turned into a grin as he walked across the room. He picked up the phone and said, “Hello!”
“You sound happy, little Canary,” Eddie purred. “You have a good day?”
Steve laughed and kicked his feet. “Much better now that I’m talking to you. I sent off your surprise and it should get to you by the time you get to LA.”
“Aww, baby,” Eddie said. “I can’t wait.” He paused for a moment. “I wanted to apologize to you about Chrissy. She was fucking rude to you and I chewed her out for it.”
Steve blinked for a moment. What now? He was used to people being rude and dismissive to him. No one ever apologized for that. “You did?”
“Yeah, Stevie,” Eddie said sternly. “I did. She thought that this little arrangement of ours was going to be temporary, but when I told her I had paid for the room for six months, she was very upset. She told me I couldn’t just throw money around like that. That’s when I told her about my little presents for you. Then she really hit the fan.”
“Oh,” he murmured. “I don’t want to cause you trouble with your management, but I–I don’t have anywhere else to go. My dad is still out there trying to make my life difficult.” His bottom lip began to shake.
“But don’t worry a thing, pretty bird,” Eddie cooed. “I got her sorted out and now she understands how important this is for me and somehow my impassioned speech managed to sway my bandmates too. I don’t think they knew how bad things had gotten for you.”
“What–what did you tell them?” Steve asked softly, his voice beginning to break.
“Nothing that they didn’t already know,” Eddie soothed. “I just made it as dire as possible so that they got the message loud and clear.”
Steve’s shoulders sagged in relief. That–that he could handle. Because as much as he wanted to shrug this off and pretend he didn’t need or want help, the truth was that he did need Eddie’s help and if getting that help meant getting all of Corroded Coffin on board and their manager, too then that’s what Steve would have to accept that.
“I really appreciate this,” he murmured. “I knew my dad was going to make trouble. I just didn’t think he’d go this far. To make sure I didn’t have anything but my car and my clothes.”
“I know, little Canary,” Eddie said, “just put your trust in me and I’ll take care of you. Okay?”
“Okay, Eddie,” Steve breathed. “I owe you so much and I don’t know how I can pay you back.”
“You don’t owe me anything, I’m just happy to be able to help you.”
Steve let out a shuddering breath. He closed his eyes as tears began to well. He was just so overwhelmed from the kindness of a stranger that he was about to start bawling right there on the phone. A hiccuping sob escaped his lips and then it was like the floodgates had opened. He just sobbed and sobbed. No one had ever been this kind to him before.
“Oh, sweetheart,” Eddie cooed. “I wish I could be there to hold you. So this will just have to do.” And then he started singing softly. It was gentle and slow and spoke of having a safe place to land.
Slowly his sobs slackened and he gave a final hiccup. “That was beautiful. Did you write it?”
“Sure did,” Eddie said proudly. “First song I ever wrote in fact. Wrote it the night the court awarded permanent custody of me to my Uncle Wayne. I knew from that moment on that my dad couldn’t come back and hurt me again.”
Steve rolled over onto his belly with a sigh. “That must have felt so good. Having someone you trusted to step up and take care of you.”
“He’s a good man,” Eddie agreed warmly. “And this is me paying that kindness forward to you, little Canary.”
Steve let out a small shuddering breath, letting the knot in his chest loosen. “So tell me about your concert tonight,” he said. “Where were you playing again?”
Eddie made a small huff of laughter. “We were in Texas tonight...”
Steve let Eddie’s warm voice wash over him.
“You feeling sleepy, my little Canary?” Eddie murmured after awhile.
He let out a little sleepy snuffle. “No.”
Eddie chuckled. “If you say so sweetheart.” And he continued to talk until the snuffles became a soft sonorous snore.
“Good night, Stevie.”
~
Steve woke up to the dial tone in his ear again. He moaned as he rolled over on his back and ran his fingers through his hair.
He needed to stop falling asleep to the musician’s voice. It was really becoming a problem. It always made him wake up hard as a fucking rock. He picked up the phone and put back in its cradle. He flopped back on the bed. He lifted the covered to glare at his aching erection.
He palmed his cock in an attempt to get it go to down. But instead it made it worse. He pushed down harder, but his own roughness made him moan. He could feel the outline of cock as it throbbed against his hip.
He hadn’t gone this long without at least rubbing himself off since he was a stupid freshman. He knew he should wait until he was in the shower, but the walk would be so fucking painful. Steve threw off the covers and then shoved the front of his shorts down to free his cock. He then slowly unbuttoned his sleep shirt. Rubbing his nipples and stroking his chest to get himself really riled up.
If he was going to this, he was going to wring out as pleasure out of this as he possibly could. He lifted his hips and slid the shorts off as slow as he could.
He brought his hands back up his legs, his thighs spreading as his palms cupped his cock. It was leaking at the tip and he dragged his thumb over his slit, smearing it across the glans. He moaned again. This time louder. That felt so good. He did it again, going the other direction. Slow and rough.
He imagined Eddie watching him. Directing his every move. How hard he should pull. How rough he should get.
The way he came hard and long was a testament to Eddie’s raw sexual power, and Steve’s vivid imagination. He grabbed a couple of tissues from the tissue box next to the bed and cleaned himself up the best he could.
Then he shucked off the top and waddled into the shower, tossing the tissues on his way.
~
It was a little bit before noon by the time Steve got to call Dustin.
“Steve!” Dustin greeted warmly. “To what do I owe this pleasure?”
“What are you dorks up to today?” he asked bluntly.
“I don’t know,” Dustin whined. “I don’t think we really have any plans. At least not together.”
“Call up the goon squad and find out,” Steve said. “And then call me back.”
Steve could feel the kid’s skepticism through the phoneline as he thought about it. “Yeah. Fine. I’ll call you back.”
Just before he hung up, Dustin bit out. “We call ourselves The Party, Steve. Not the goon squad.”
“You call yourselves the party Steve?” he murmured. “That’s so sweet of you–”
There was a click and a dial tone. Steve grinned at the receiver before putting it down on the cradle. He threw open his wardrobe and started shifting through his new clothes. He was going somewhere with a lot of kids and soda and greasy pizza, so nothing too fancy.
Not finding anything fit the bill, he went through his drawers. He decided on a nice pair of jeans and a dark blue tanktop with a black short sleeved button up over the top. He fixed his hair in the mirror and then pulled on his old sneakers. He didn’t want to get any of his new shoes sticky.
He had run his fingers through his hair one more time when the phone rang.
“Hello!” he greeted.
“Well, hello to you too little Canary,” the warm velvet voice sounded through phone. “You sound happy today.”
Steve’s gut felt like warm chocolate had pooled there. “Hi-ya, Eddie.”
“I was just calling to tell you that I’ll be out of rang cell phone wise and so you won’t be able to call me until I get to Arizona tomorrow.”
“Awww...” Steve huffed. “Way to make me sad.”
“I know, sweetheart,” Eddie purred. “I just wanted to make sure you knew, so that I didn’t think I was avoiding you.”
A soft smile tugged at his lips. “Thanks for that.”
“Have a good day, okay?” Eddie said.
“I’ll try!” Steve chirped back.
He barely hung up the phone before it rang again, his hand never leaving the receiver. “Hey.”
“Steve!” Dustin cried. “I tried to call you but your line was busy!”
Steve let out a long slow sigh. “Other people do call me, Dusty. Like the guy who’s paying for all this?”
Dustin huffed. “Well if you would just tell me who he is, maybe I would be more forgiving...”
“Ain’t gonna happen, Dusty,” Steve bit out. “I don’t want it getting back to my dad who it is. And before you tell me you’ll never tell. You’ll say something when you think no one is around and someone will hear you. Until my dad gives up his little Crusade, I ain’t tell you shit.”
“Come on, Steve...” Dustin begged.
“I was going to take everyone to the arcade today but if you’re going to keep hounding me about it, maybe I won’t.”
The line went silent.
“I’m sorry, Steve,” Dustin murmured. “I just want to make sure he’s a good guy and not taking advantage you.”
Steve let out a breath through his nostrils and closed his eyes tightly. “He isn’t even in Hawkins right now and I don’t know when he’ll be back, okay?” He pinched the bridge of his nose.
“Okay.”
Then he held the phone away from his ear.
Wait for it.
Wait…for…it.
“You want to take everyone to the arcade?!” Dustin screamed.
“Sure do, bud,” Steve said once it was safe to do so.
“I can’t wait to tell everyone!” Dustin screeched. “When? What time are you come over? Details please!”
Steve worked out all the details and sorted out rides. When they finally hang up, Steve positively beaming.
Eddie was paying forward the kindness his uncle gave to him to Steve. And Steve was paying it forward to his kids. And that left a warm feeling in his chest like nothing else could.

What are each of the main cast’s favourite foods, and how to they reflect what they grew up eating/their background/broader cultural trends?
Key for the constructed foods that come up in this post:
Nara: a type of citrus fruit, comparable to a lime in sourness. Peledyo: a type of fermented fish sauce used as seasoning in of itself or a base for other sauces. (This is a knockoff of irl garum). This is FUNDAMENTAL to Imperial Wardi cuisine, and closely analogous/connected variants are produced by all the peoples of the Viper as well as across most of the Lowlands (southeast of Imperial Wardin). Magah: a type of tuberous root vegetable. Similar to a potato, but coming from a wholly different plant and more strongly flavored (notes of cabbage) with yellow-orange flesh. Heavily cultivated in the Highlands and considered more of a famine food elsewhere in Imperial Wardin. Yute: a cultivar in the same species as magah with purple flesh and a sweeter taste, a staple in the mountainous parts of Kosov and some other parts of the Burri Republic. Gaiyi: a brassica cultivar used in Kos cuisine, resembling broccolini. Completely absent in Imperial Wardin. Yamnina reyla: the premier spice blend used in Wardi cuisines, it has some regional variants but its core ingredients are crushed chilis, coriander, cumin, and firebug (imparts little flavor but significant reddish-orange color that gives this mix its name), all ground together. Camiche: an edible seed, eaten as a nut. Kolis: a cactus-like plant with edible fruits and young shoots. The fruit tastes like watermelon and is very sweet, but has more sour notes. Anuje: a sap extracted from one of the region's few native palms, has a sweet, molasses-esque flavor. This is the staple sweetener and culturally favored over honey in most provinces, consumption of honey is generally seen as a 'rural' thing]

Tigran spent the first 11 years of his life in pretty extreme poverty as an agricultural laborer so did not have a lot of exciting food. His family is Ubiyan-Wardi (pretty rare ethnic minority in the region, mostly descending from people hired or enslaved as war captives and/or indentured servants for labor by Imperial Bur at its height). Many of these people formed communities that retain their cultural identity to this day, but these largely occur in the north and in the province of Lobera. Most people with Ubiyan heritage in South Wardin come from more isolated lines that fully integrated and intermarried with the Wardi(nae) population, and are heavily 'Wardinized' in the present day.
Tigran's family is an example of one with this cultural heritage being largely lost- they know that much of their ancestry comes from far northeast across the Viper but they don't know from where exactly. They are culturally South Wardi but with some traditions (and names, 'Tigran' and 'Otto' are both Ubiyan given names in origin) that have survived passed down from parent to child. To the point of this post, a lot of these traditions involve food.
He mostly ate a pretty typical South Wardi agricultural diet with the majority of his meals being variations on maize and lentil porridge, yams, onions, dairy, and foraged plants. His village also reared horses for milk and wool and ducks and fowl for eggs (and occasionally meat). He lived right on the Brilla River so would get the benefit of meat from fish or the occasional wild duck or goose. When he was 5 someone in his village killed a bull crocodile that had been eating their horses and they all had a big pit roast with it to celebrate, but he barely remembers this.
A major Ubiyan cultural element that he experienced in his childhood diet was a form of pasta. His mother and grandmother would make pasta out of maize dough in the shape of a cowrie, which they just referred to as 'little shells'. They had a secret ingredient used to toughen the consistency of the maize dough to hold the shape but wouldn't tell him, since this was apparently only for the women to know. His mother planned on teaching his future wife to make these little shells, and made it very clear she wouldn't let him marry any woman who couldn't get the technique down. To celebrate the new year, they would make a larger variant stuffed with soft horsemilk cheese, explaining that it was for good luck and abundance in the next year. This was never a Favorite food of his as a child (his favorite was the joyous occasion he got to eat fatty, non-gamey domestic duck), but he's never been able to find these little shells anywhere else, hasn't seen his family since he was 11, and misses it.
His FAVORITE food is duck. The best meal he's probably ever had was roast duck glazed with date wine, dried nara, chilis, and a little bit of peledyo. Duck is central fare for a holiday that is timed when the reed ducks return to the region and start to breed. This moment is recognized as the transition from a period of seasonal barrenness to abundance (the mid rainy season through mid dry season span in which plant life flourishes, ends with the last harvest periods for most staple crops). It involves a feasting day in which most people make meals based around preserved fruits/vegetables, early wild forage, and duck (hunted or slaughtered).
Tigran completing his initiation as a Galenii monk (which involves a year of only taking food received via begging) timed itself very close to this festival occurring. So not only did he Finally get to eat regular meals, but he had never in his entire LIFE tasted anything so good. He was 12 years old and was guided by his mentor into an epiphany that like, 'this IS what it's all for, guaranteeing that we have the season of abundance year after year. AND more importantly I get to eat really really really good meals provided by the temple'.
---
Palo grew up in the very cushy end of the mercantile commoner class with his father being a guild glassmaker, and lived in the province Odkotonnos (one of the more agriculturally rich) and city of Godsmouth proper (THE center of trade), so he had regular access to a decent variety of pretty good food. He and most of his family are first generation immigrants from Kosov (a province of the contemporary Burri Republic, occupying the same latitude as South Wardin). He moved as a baby and grew up eating a lot of Kos food in addition to the general western Wardi diet (which itself has a heavy Burri/Kos/Titen influence).
(The most immediately distinctive difference between these and Wardi cuisines is staple grains/starches often being eaten in the form of noodles, which is more broadly a characteristic of a wide span of the Inner Seaways peoples west of the Mouth. The other big difference is a fermented corn sauce (functionally similar to soy sauce) being the foundational umami flavoring, rather than the peledyo fish sauce that is a staple in Wardin)
He also spent a cumulative few years of his life in Kosov and there had the favorite thing he's ever eaten, which is a mung bean noodle dish with catfish, yute, gaiyi, spinach, onions, and a chili-olive oil sauce. Some of the core ingredients are rare if not absent in Imperial Wardin (magah is generally considered a famine food and not widely cultivated outside of the Highlands, gaiyi grows in the humid montane conditions found in southwestern Kosov, and this particular kind of catfish was notably tastier to him than commonly eaten Wardi species) so he's never had this exact dish or a close equivalent since.
Otherwise his diet throughout most of his life was very seafood heavy in addition to staple grains, starches, and legumes. He dislikes most non-fish meat and hates the texture of fat, so eats a lot of whitefish when given the chance.
One thing that actually like, comes up in canon as a thing he really loved is seabass he ate at social events with his family. The bass is roasted whole and (along with other elements of the meal) surrounded by dips and condiments. You pick up the fish meat with pieces of pounded yam and dip/scoop up condiments before eating it. On a really nice occasion, condiments could include fermented corn sauce in plain and semi-sweet form, Basically Aioli (a blend of mashed garlic and olive oil), several types of peledyo (sweet anuje-wine peledyo, bitter vinegar peledyo, plain salty peledyo, etc), several hot sauces (the typical formula here is different kinds of chilis mixed with olive oil, cumin, coriander, garlic, and citrus juice, all mashed into a liquid paste), a sweet anuje-garlic sauce, chopped onions/parsley raw in citrus juice, a mash of peas + onions cooked in duckfat, fermented salted crab roe, plain olive oil, chili-olive oil, etc.
This style of eating is an aspect of the Burri cultural sphere (and the Odkotonnos provincial subculture by extension), utilized for meals during intimate social gatherings. A main course of meat cooked minimally (or wholly un-)seasoned and served with a variety of sauces and seasonings to be sampled independently aims to bring out and emphasize each component's unique qualities. A palate cleanser (usually a weak wine infused with a citrus fruit's juice) is sipped in between. This also had/has levels religious function; the traditional condiments in this meal (most of which aren't represented here) are connected to major deities of the Burri pantheon, and the diversity and abundance of the meal is recognized as the gods' many gifts made manifest (and some of each are left as offerings in a home shrine).
Palo and his family are practitioners of the Faith of the Seven Faced God (a sect of which has spread into the Burri Republic, where it is currently a very significant religious minority) and have been for several generations. So the religious aspects were framed differently in his experience, but have similar functions in representing the great abundance that God provides. (He was also brought up instructed to leave some of the corn sauce Specifically as an offering in the household shrine. This sauce is a staple across cuisines in the Burri sphere and a key offering to Vazhirum, the goddess of maize, patron of the city Titenegal, and functionally the chief agricultural deity of the pantheon. Offerings of the sauce to agricultural Faces is retained as a practice in Burri sphere sects of the Faith).
Anyway Palo mournfully thinks about this delicious seabass meal with his extended family while sitting in an alleyway with Tigran and choking down unseasoned boiled pigeon (that the guy literally caught by hand) with pounded yam, not a condiment in sight.
---
Brakul was raised in a low cattle-wealth clan in the West Rivers region of the Highlands. He lived in the Urbin river valley, which is one of the largest and most agriculturally fruitful (though his clan itself was located upland and could not grow a lot of this themselves). The West Rivers Hill Tribes have an amicable trade relationship with the province of Ephennos, so he had a fair deal of exposure to Wardi trade goods, but this didn't affect his diet much. He grew up eating an everyday diet consisting of the core staples of barley + amaranth + magah + LOTS of dairy products, in addition to some hunted/fished meat and foraged wild plants.
Crayfish was his favorite food growing up. He lived in immediate proximity to several creeks, so freshwater food (crayfish, trout, mussels, frogs) could be a pretty major portion of his diet during the summers. On some occasions, crayfish and mussels would be boiled to make a broth with chilis and onions, then served in a soup with yogurt, barley, butter, fennel, and magah. This was his absolute favorite meal and he particularly liked the crayfish themselves (his brother didn't, so would trade his crayfish for Brakul's mussels).
Living in a coastal city and being introduced to the concept of Crabs and Lobsters (it's like a crayfish but HUGE) later in life was lifechanging. Crab meat is now his absolute favorite food. He sometimes attempts to recreate the crayfish boil dish with crab (he does a pretty solid job but the yogurt always ends up curdled). He's also a fan of a dish where a softshell crab is fried and then coated with a concentrated sticky sweet peledyo sauce.
He's pretty enthusiastic about trying new foods (and benefited tremendously from having a rich boyfriend who can facilitate this) and has decided that anara is the best game the lowlands has to offer. Their tails are VERY rich, tender, and fatty, very good roasted with a sweet+spicy sauce. He first experienced this at the wedding of one of Janeys' cousins and now insists on eating it regularly/pursuing anara on hunts over more favored game like gazelle and nechoi. There's also a greater variety of alcoholic beverages available, and he's become fond of the a very decadent form of date wine sweetened with anuje and imported cardamom.
He also likes + misses a dish composed of feydhi (highlands khait) fat which is rendered, mashed with dried berries and a little honey, left out in the snow to chill solid, and then sliced and eaten on bread. This is a staple in midwinter feasts and a special treat. Its considered an obligation for each tribe's chief clan to fatten some of their khait on grain and then provide their fat to their constituents for this feast (the ability to Afford to give this gift effectively demonstrates + reinforced their power). Young children and pregnant women get first dibs/the biggest helpings (regarded as good for a growing body, helps pack fat on for the lean season) so there's a childhood nostalgia aspect to it. It's something he would look forward to every year.
He hasn't had any access to this dish whatsoever in South Wardin, as khait are virtually never slaughtered except as an act of desperation (culturally considered to be poor meat in general) and the Coldest winter temperatures average in the high 40s F (sub-freezing temperatures and snow Happen but not predictably or regularly) which is not adequate to cool fat to the desired consistency. This is particularly torturous because feydhi are actually quite common in South Wardin as pack animals and have a tendency to get VERY fat on the seasonal abundance of grass (being an 'easy keeper' landrace adapted to having nutritional needs met by much poorer mountain forage). His khait She-Bites is a feydhi and was sold to him cheap (on account of behavioral issues), he was originally intending to have her butchered but got too attached.

Etsushir grew up in a clanless Jazaiti community, in a coastal fishing town northeast from the city of Wardin proper. The existence of clanless Jazait mingling with Wardi populations long predates Imperial Wardin as an entity, but these communities have grown substantially in the past two centuries, in large part due to heavy encroachment on Jazaiti fishing territory causing major subsistence issues and driving many people to look for employment to sustain themselves. They are very marginalized ethnic minorities and tend to form distinct sub-communities amid their Wardi counterparts, but the decentralized structure of Jazait society and certain practices (like polyandrous marriage and minimization of reproductive females in any given family) cannot be fully retained in these settings (both on the levels of pure logistics and a result of disenfranchisement). As such, these groups tend to experience a degree of 'Wardinization', which affects all aspects of life, and in this case The Food.
Etsushir would have grown up in large part eating a typical coastal South Wardi diet (lots of maize porridges, lentils, and fish), in addition to exploiting uncultivated resources that his human Wardi counterparts physically cannot (certain grasses especially) or culturally Do not (only a couple seaweeds are considered good eating).
His favorite food is part of the Fusion Cuisine found in some of these partly Wardinized Jazaiti communities. It's a dish consisting of several kinds of seaweed mixed with hominy and raw tuna that has all been marinated in vinegar peledyo. His family and wider community have adopted the Faith Of The Seven Faced God and practice what would be considered a syncretic folk-variant. The Jazaiti Moonfather (who created tuna and sometimes takes the form of one) is associated with the Face Mitlamache, and tuna is often eaten in place of beef during the Mitlamache-focused maize planting festival. His family getting to catch, keep, and eat their own tuna would have been a special occasion largely reserved for these celebrations.
(The strictly Jazaiti version of this dish uses seaweed and fish in addition to the young shoots of a type of grass, all cured in nuji (VERY bitter native citrus, not commonly eaten by humans) juice. Elowey and human chemical sense of taste overlaps considerably, but elowey can digest a wider range of plant matter and have a substantially more complex experience with bitter tastes, a lot of foods from elowey cuisines are distastefully bitter to human palates)
He also has the genes for lactase persistence (VERY rare in the Jazait population, as well as the broader White Sea elowey population group). He doesn't like yogurt and finds adults drinking milk to be mildly disturbing, but is very fond of cheese. He prefers cowsmilk cheeses over the slightly more common and accessible horsemilk, and likes a fairly common Wardi cheese dish (a soft cowsmilk cheese cooked in a pepper/onion sauce and eaten atop grits).
---
Faiza (and every other character from here on) is in the noble class and grew up eating a substantially more varied, calorie rich, and meat heavy diet than the average person. This doesn't mean that every meal is Very Fancy, they're still ultimately reliant on most of the same basic staples as the lower classes, but their everyday diet includes More of these staples at once, with more variety, more spices, and a much more regular addition of meat.
The Haidamanes are all multiethnic (most relevant here is that their father was Titen on his mother's side and South Wardi on his father's), they're squarely South Wardi in terms of cultural identity but were brought up eating some Titen cuisine on a more than incidental basis. Faiza was the only one of her siblings that was notably into this, she thinks the noodles are fun. A favorite standby would be a dish made with very thick mung bean noodles, chickpeas, pre-roasted horse udder, cabbage, and onion, which is all fried together in fermented corn sauce and garlic-olive oil.
Faiza really likes salutachin dog meat, most commonly eaten in a dish where it is roasted with a rub of olive oil, garlic, date wine, and smoked yamnina reyla. Salutachin is a dog breed specifically raised for meat and is a South-Wardi specific practice in the present day (livestock dog types fed on plant matter used to be more common across the region. Burri influence contributed to the notion (already extant in some Wardi groups) that ANY form of dog meat is unclean, and the practice is extinct or rare in most other parts).
This is kind of a luxury food and regarded as a delicacy. It's of critical importance that salutachin stock is kept entirely 'pure' and prevented from breeding with ANY other dogs, and fattened on exclusively vegetarian diets, generally maize and yams (this partly stems from wider dietary taboos surrounding consumption of predators, but largely just improves the taste of the meat). They can be more costly to maintain than other types of livestock (which will help feed themselves via grazing) or working dogs (which aren't supposed to be eaten and thus can be fed on any number of scraps). As such, it tends to be fairly expensive and reserved for special occasions, and is a mainstay at South Wardi wedding feasts.
Faiza has a notable childhood memory of being at her uncle's wedding, feeding a scrap of salutachin to one of the hunting dogs, and experiencing a kind of sick, nervous thrill at compelling a good animal to cannibalism. She interacts with food taboos/taboos in general more skeptically than average and experiences temptations to violate them, though she's never actually gone through with it on the food level. She doesn't ultimately disagree with any of them though, just interprets their necessity through her proto-materialist philosophical background instead of the strictly spiritual angle. She's very fixated with the stories of Godsmouth civilians starving to death in the siege resorting to eating feral dogs (which is VERY taboo) that had themselves eaten human corpses (thus this is like, the worst thing you could possibly eat short of an actual human corpse). She's kind of fascinated with cannibalism in general.
---
Hibrides is from the city/province Erubinnos and predominantly of Yuroma-Wardi ethnicity. This refers to descendents of a Yuroma ethnic group first arrived as refugees several centuries prior, and is considered an Imperial Wardi subculture in the present day (practicing the state religion and fully integrated into the broader cultural sphere, but retaining a sub-identity).
Erubinnos has a near-equivalent makeup of South Wardi and Yuroma-Wardi inhabitants and its regional cuisine is influenced by both groups. (Some distinctive Yuroma elements are the regular consumption of raw fish, heavy specialization into smoked and cured meats (as a culinary form rather than a practicality), use of squid ink, and favoring of rice (which was first brought here by Yuroma migrants)). So Hibrides spent her first 15 years of life eating a bougie version of this diet before being moved to the province of Wardin for marriage.
She's a Very picky eater and has a lot of dislikes- she doesn't like most whitefish, most freshwater fish in general, tuna (doesn't actually dislike the taste but found a very big worm in her tuna once and it put her off forever), most red meats (she particularly doesn't like horsemeat, she got attached to a childhood pet horse to the culturally rare point of not wanting to eat Any horse meat altogether), eggplant, most lentils, or raw tomatoes. And to top it off she has a lower than average heat tolerance. So when she has a choice in the matter she tends to go for oily fish, fowl, rabbit and hares, and some reptiles like crocodile + turtles + certain snakes.
One of her favorite meals is an Erubinnos-specific dish where sardines (or other oily baitfish) are marinated in a sauce made with vinegar-peledyo, olive oil, and a sauce of mashed tomato + garlic + more olive oil, and eaten raw. This exact preparation with raw fish is uncommon in the city+province of Wardin, but she has the benefit of living in a household with a cook on hire and requests it very frequently. It reminds her of home.
She also used to love turtle meat (a type of softshell turtle is a delicacy here, usually eaten in soup). The Erubinnos regional turtle soup is kind of an outlier among Imperial Wardi cuisine in being very delicately flavored (a thin broth made with a dry wine, onions, fennel, rice, and usually ginger (imported)). She actually prefers the South Wardi variant (which is a heartier stew with heavy seasoning, eaten over grits).
She has had intense cravings for turtle during each pregnancy (which is interpreted as a bit of a concern- most river-based foods are thought to support a healthy pregnancy, but Cravings indicate that the womb is excessively 'hot/dry' and at greater risk of miscarriage). She ended up liking turtle a lot less after the first pregnancy when the cravings ended, and shifted her reptile soup focus to a species of python with a similar tasting (but less luxuriously fatty) meat. The return of the turtle cravings was one of her first indicators that she was pregnant a third time, and she doesn't stand a goddamn chance of getting any turtle meat in the 6th year of the drought.
She's pretty fond of a lot of game meat in general. Her favorite uncle was an avid hunter and made a point of bringing back gamebirds (and their eggs and feathers) for her, so she has a nostalgic fondness for dishes with duck, goose, ibis, pheasants, and the like. Hunting is also one of the diminishingly rare things she enjoys doing with her bitch husband and she's found that actually participating (granted, just in the form of watching and yelling directions) makes eating it afterwords more satisfying.
She'll only eat the nechoi they kill smoked and cured though, it tastes repulsive to her otherwise (in no small part due to this tending to be big boar nechoi killed in a prolonged, somewhat foolhardy solo struggle and is thus pumped with testosterone and fear hormones). This meat is stripped of (horrid tasting) fat, salted, slow-smoked, and usually eaten in soups.
---
Janeys is also somewhat of a picky eater, in his case he dislikes almost any animal product that comes out of the water (with a particular disdain for shellfish and crustaceans), and consciously frames it as such- crocodile, duck, and goose is an exception because they don't live in the water permanently, turtle is on thin fucking ice. He has to make an exception for peledyo because it's in just about everything and he can't honestly say he dislikes it.
His favorite meat is beef. He and his siblings grew up eating more beef products than average (even for nobility) due to the agricultural aspect of their wealth being rooted in ownership of cattle herds (which are actually reared, managed, and slaughtered by peasants). The Haidamane family is considered 'new money' landed nobility (opposed to established, multi-century old landowning families with wealth based in crop agriculture)- the vast majority of their wealth is mercantile, with a small facet being the 'ownership' of mostly uncultivated scrubland and the cattle grazed there. Janeys is now in charge of the latter aspect after being quietly cut out of his actual intended inheritance, so this humiliation has a fringe benefit of having plenty of beef around, AND he hasn't quite gotten sick of it yet.
Cattle are very sacred animals and the Only sacred livestock. Sacred status doesn't entail not being eaten by any means, but it does entail a lot of emotional+spiritual investment in them as livestock and ritual surrounding their rearing and consumption. Janeys has also always been a little jealous that both of his sisters are in the priesthood, and his (ultimately very distant) involvement in the management of these animals (some of whom are donated to temple sacrificial stock herds) feels like a slice of that, getting to eat their meat on a relatively regular basis is psychologically gratifying in ways beyond just liking the food.
His favorite cut is actually the oxtail above anything else. This would mostly be eaten in a (notably bougie) South Wardi oxtail soup (tomato and olive oil sauce, wine, beef broth, yamnina reyla, saffron, hominy, onions, garlic, cabbage). He also is very fond of sweetbreads, and the liver. The liver is culturally considered the best part of the cow and its consumption is ceremonially restricted- half of the liver Has to be offered in sacrifice for each cow slaughtered (a sort of thanks-giving and payment for the cattle's death), and the other half is reserved for the patriarch who owns the cattle, which can be distributed as he chooses. As of his father's death, Janeys is now technically the patriarch of his family so like, great news for him.
There are no such restrictions on the livers of other regularly consumed animals, and he does like horse liver too. Usually takes it in sausage form (the favored, high quality type here is minced liver mixed with the tender ground meat of the tail, cumin seed, and thyme, cased in caul fat).
He's notably fond of sweet foods- major examples available are roasted figs with cheese, figs or dates stuffed with nuts, sticky pine nut and/or pistachio 'candy' made with anuje, candied figs/dates/kolis/nara. One variety of cornbread is stuffed with pine nut + camiche + pistachio, fried, and glazed with anuje. A type of native melon (similar consistency to a watermelon but VERY mildly sweet, tastes more like a cucumber) is used to make a cold soup with mint + thyme, he takes it sweetened with anuje. He also tried grilled honeycomb with honey + larvae while in the southern-central Highlands and was shocked that he liked it (given that insects are not only famine food but Peasant famine food).
In relation to this, he eats a lot of fruit when it's in season. His favorite fruits are figs and pomegranates. These aren't accessible year round and he doesn't particularly like them dried on their own, so it's something to look forward to every year. Kolis has a very long fruiting season and he has one growing on his balcony for personal use.
He likes sweet wines (typically served strong, rather than watered down like how most wine is consumed on a regular basis) but is a lightweight and noted sloppy drunk. He dilutes it with rosewater on occasions where he's exhibiting a reasonable degree of self control.
---
Couya isn't a terribly picky eater (she will eat just about anything) but has strong proclivities towards very simple comfort foods and doesn't like meat all that much, to the point of her chosen diet being regarded as spartan and peasant-esque. A big part of her personality is thinking of most of her fellow nobility as Pussies and making a bit of a show about how much she doesn't mind discomfort and relative non-luxury, which extends to her food tastes. (though to be clear, this is mostly a prolonged act of 'fuck you mom/brother/most of my extended family'. If she had to spend a month living as an actual peasant she would DIE).
This is also motivated in part by the fact that her childhood home life was legitimately horrendous and a whole lot of Really Nice Foods and Delicacies are associated with bad memories for her (particularly the Titen noodle cuisine that Faiza is very fond of, since that's the only element she's ONLY experienced in that home and nowhere else.) Switching most of her diet to basics more characteristic of the lower mercantile class (and eating very little meat outside of holidays and ceremonies) is kind of an escape from that.
She doesn't really like sitting down for meals and favors 'husk meals', which is a subclass of foods built around being wrapped and cooked in corn husk, where they will hold a semi-solid shape and can be eaten on the go. There's a tremendous variety of husk meals, this is the equivalent of The Sandwich in terms of its utility and variability. They're usually composed of a seasoned grain or starch, often stuffed with vegetables/cheeses/egg/meats. Some variants resemble a sausage (without casing) where equal parts of a finely chopped/ground meat is mixed with grain and other ingredients and cooked in the husk. These meat variants most often use meat from the head (as well as eyes, tongue, and brain, and leftover scraps) to extend a valuable slaughtered carcass; head-husk is specifically regarded as a peasant food in this capacity.
Her favorite husk meal variant is one made with seasoned crushed rice stuffed with onions, cabbage, and soft cheese. Rice is her favorite grain, but its not The Most accessible where she lives (the province of Wardin is the driest and has a very small rice output) so she's having variants with maize dough/grits instead on most occasions. She also loves okra (a landrace of which can be grown here, though is a fairly delicate and non-staple crop), which is often eaten with other vegetables and hominy grits (she usually takes this as a husk meal too).
#This took me fucking FOREEVVERR to write lol. Also is minimally proofread sorry if anythings fucked#I'm probably going to have an updated version of that general food post it's gotten more fleshed out#with some things removed due to more concrete ideas of where certain grains/vegetables have been domesticated and would have#spread here by this point in history#Should note that most foods should be assumed not Identical to real world counterparts but Close Enough#(as in like. they might be different cultivars than extant irl or etc)#I only give them unique names when it's a full spec bio plant (of which there are few) or distant enough from an IRL analogue that#its worth separating

A DITL with Alex Keller would consist of:
You enjoying one of the few days you can actually sleep in... until you hear a husky yelp, feel the other side of the bed jerk, and then "Wicky!" Oh... Brunswick must've bitten Alex's nose again. So much for sleeping in.
You two stumbling into the kitchen, Alex holding Brunswick like a baby in one arm, bed hair on 1000, scratching his chest with the other hand, and yawning. While he's busy feeding your devious furbaby, you... look in the fridge for something to eat.
"Frosted Flakes." "Alex, no." "Sure thing, Boss. Honey Nut Cheerios it is." "Alex, please—"
Settling for a HOT breakfast this time that Brunswick keeps trying to steal from Alex's plate.
While you're cleaning up from breakfast, Alex is busy preparing his world-famous chili for the crockpot so it'll slow cock throughout the day. Says the weather is perfect for chili... as you remind him that he wanted cereal for breakfast. ("Pfft—")
After you and Alex have gotten yourselves ready for the day, it's time to... give Brunswick a bath. Good luck with that, Alex.
While you're busy indulging yourself during a much-needed break, it's practically a warzone in the bathroom—"C'mon, buddy, you should already be used to—OW! Dammit—Wicky, no!" Alex is a mess when he emerges from the bathroom, and you fail to hold your laughter in.
Wicky deviously deciding to make Alex's day a living hell if his meowing and antics are any indication. "Wicky, can't a man use the bathroom in peace?" "Wicky, that's not a toy..." "The hell you keep nipping at me for?" "Wicky, I can't keep picking you up."
You and Alex finally getting around to watching that one show you've been planning to see together until he realizes—"When you'd start without me, Boss?" Cue you feigning innocence. Whatever are you talking about, Alex?
Also finding out that Brunswick will sometimes sit or, er, stand on his hind legs and watch TV. Wait a minute...
Binge-watching said show until dinnertime at which point you feed Brunswick after he's made enough biscuits on Alex's head and you two get to enjoy his world-famous chili.
In the meantime in-between time, Wicky ventures off to do whatever it is he does, you and Alex clean up and prepare for bed because your day starts early tomorrow.
...At which point Brunswick came back to express his love and gratitude by presenting you a gift. In bed. You and Alex have never jumped so high before in your lives. Dammit, Wicky.

Eating Well
If you are someone who struggles to figure out what to eat, this post may help.
There is a lot of information out there about eating well. It's important to know it's not as complicated as most guides try to make it. The following is a simple way of looking at food adapted from David Werner's Where There Is No Doctor:
You need a main food, or foods. A "Main Food" is one or more starch bases, like pasta/noodles, bread/tortilla/biscuits, hominy, rice, potatoes, taro, millet, barley, or another grain or starchy tuber.
These are usually cheap and should make up a majority of your calories. They often also provide an amount of protein, vitamins and minerals.
However, living on starchy bases alone is not adequate. To them, you need to add at least one or two each of "Go Foods", "Grow Foods" and "Glow Foods" every day.
"Go Foods" are energy foods. They are things like oils, fats, peanuts, other nuts, oily seeds (like sesame and sunflower), and sugars (like granulated sugar, honey, maple syrup, and fruit juices). Eat more of these if you are doing heavy work. They can also replace some of your Main Food, though they are often somewhat more expensive.
"Grow Foods" are foods that build muscle and other body tissues and heal injuries. They include animal foods (like meat, eggs, milk, and fish), legumes (beans, peas, peanuts, and lentils), and seeds (pumpkin, sesame, sunflower, melon, etc...).
"Glow Foods" are foods that contain a lot of vitamins and minerals. These include dark green leafy vegetables (spinach, kale, collards, turnip greens, radish greens, etc...), orange vegetables (carrots, pumpkins, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, winter squash of any kind, etc...), fruits (apples, pears, berries, quince, etc...) and other vegetables (turnips, radishes, summer squash, onions, cabbage, etc...), herbs and spices (chili powder, garlic, cumin, thyme, oregano, sage, cinnamon, etc...).
Example meals (each meal does not need to contain all types of foods, as long as someone is eating some of each every day):
A rice bowl (Main) with vegetable (Glow) and bean (Grow) curry (Glow).
Oatmeal (Main) with whole or coconut milk (Go, Grow) and berries (Glow)
Spaghetti (Main) with tomato sauce (Glow) and meatballs (Grow)
Tapioca pudding (Main, Grow, Go) with cinnamon and nutmeg (Glow)
Farrow (Main) with stewed tomatoes (Glow) and olive oil (Go)
Zucchini boats (Glow) with black beans (Grow), rice (Main) and cheese (Go, Grow)
Baked potato (Main) with broccoli (Glow) and cheese (Go, Grow)
Potato (Main) and spinach (Glow) curry (Glow)
Whole fat yogurt (Grow, Go), granola (Main, Go), and berries (Glow)
Peanut butter (Go, Grow) and jam (Go, Glow) on toast (Main)

planning out this menu for next week so of course thinking about the ghouls and their kitchen/food habits
dew loves sweet, crunchy treats. kettle corn, frozen chocolates, chocolate covered nuts. anything sweet that will leave a trail of crumbs will do. what he hates, however, is dishes, so he'll do anything possible to avoid making more, including using a paper towel as a makeshift plate (this of course leads to more mess, and mountain has nearly banned him from the space on several occasions)
rain loves spicy foods. ordering thai? he's requesting level 5 spicy, with extra chili paste on the side. loves to chase spice-intolerant dew around offering kisses after. he has too many teeth, so he won't touch stringy foods like celery. in the kitchen, he will clean as he goes, but never remembers where to put the spatulas or whisks so good luck figuring out which drawer he plopped them in
mountain also has a sweet tooth, but more for cakes and cookies. his baking is rivaled only by sunshine, and they'll tackle the most difficult recipes together to make actual magic. also makes the best ✨️special✨️ treats with his home-grown stash. extremely clean and organized; everyone knows better than to bother him in the kitchen, choosing to sit and observe at the island instead. if they're extra good, he'll slide them a sample
swiss loves savory and crunchy snacks. chips, pretzels, extra toasty cheeze-its. mountain made him savory trail mix once and now he asks for a pound of it every yule. will keep the kitchen pretty tidy, but has an unfortunate habit of forgetting to close the cabinets he opens and has bonked himself on more than one occasion. also known to make anything into leftover sandwiches that have no right to be as tasty as they are
aether is a grill dad. grilling is peaceful for him, plus it keeps his hands warm. loves a good classic burger, or a grilled chicken salad, definitely a savory guy. there could be a foot of snow outside, and aeth will be lighting the grill up for dinner without complaint. he's still learning to use the smoker, ever the perfectionist, but no one is complaining about eating the "messed up" brisket that doesn't quite fall apart when you poke it
aurora is the soup queen. loves eating soup, making soup; all soup, all the time. the den has a lot of mouths to feed so mountain made her a special step stool to help her see more easily into the massive kitchen stock pot while she cooks. her favorite to eat (but least favorite to make) is cauliflower soup, it's creamy and delicious, but every time she uses an immersion blender the ceiling gets as much soup as she does
sunshine also loves baking. her favorite is a classic raspberry french macaron and she has perfected the technique - it's impressive. phantom loves to watch her cook in particular, she's so clean and precise, they hope one day to hold a measuring cup like she does. sunshine is a bit more patient in the kitchen, showing whoever is watching little tips and tricks. wears the cutest floral apron, almost always covered in flour handprints
cumulus is all about fruits and berries, loves citrus and blackberries the best. mountain painstakingly cares for a little tangerine tree, just for her. her favorite foods to make are comfort foods, and she always makes the macaroni and cheese for big group dinners. everyone begs for it (and rain doesn't even add hot sauce), but she is definitely one of the messier cooks. everyone knows she has been in the kitchen when there are wrappers left about, little twist ties on the counter. the pack doesn't mind terribly, not when her dishes could cure any emotional wound
cirrus is all about cold, sweet snacks. loves ice cream and popsicles, the freezer is well stocked. her favorite is orange pushpops, and she will take exactly zero questions about it. works with great efficiency in the kitchen, and will often be the one planning dinner party menus with mountain. that, and which special snack he should make next. her specific cooking talent is bread, in particular sourdough. she made a cinnamon bread once that made dew cream his pants, he still hasn't lived it down
phantom burned water once, never tried cooking again. loves to wear a thrifted shrek shirt, "in the morning, im making waffles." they aren't, they barely use the toaster, but they'll make puppy eyes at mountain until he sighs and starts getting the batter ready. will eat anything anyone feeds them, but has an extra soft spot for those cloyingly sweet white puffy sugar cookies with bright colored frosting and sprinkles. the first time they had one was halloween, and they insisted on saving all the bat sprinkles

Oat&Linseed Bread Mix
This is a dry Mix to create very dense Bread that somewhat resembles German style whole-grain rye-and-wheat-and-seeds breads in flavour and Texture.
It goes well as a Sandwich base for sliced Cheese such as young Gouda, or with Hummus, and can be reheated and Made nicely crispy in a bread slice Toaster, Up to a week after First baking it. It's also very filling, and while it's Not inherently gluten-free by Default, it can easily be Made gluten-free without changing any of the properties, by using certified-gluten-free Oats instead of "regular", unclean Oats, and being careful about the content of Spice Mixes.
The dry mixture keeps for months and is a good idea to have around for when you're going to bake Something unrelated, and want to get the most use out of having the oven on. Most people who have an electric oven in their kitchen/as Part of their electric stove, are aware that it's somewhat wasteful/inefficient to Run it Just for one meal, but Life is such that sometimes you DO want to bake a cake, or a pie, or a meat-roast, or oven-baked vegetables, or prepare convenience food such as frozen Pizza or IKEA balls, and it makes very little difference in Energy consumption if you Put in some oat buns at the Same time.
Get yourself one of those 10 Liter buckets that are made of thin-ish, cheap-ish food-safe plastic (Polypropylene) and come with a Lid of the same material that makes a watertight but not very pressure-stable Seal, and is stackable with other buckets of the Same size due to a lip/rim on the Lid. You can get them for free If you know who to ask, because they're the typical packaging that restaurant-quantities of Ketchup and Mayonnaise and Yoghurt and Cream and Applesauce and some types of Frying Fat come in, so most Small Restaurants both use them for internal storage of EVERYTHING, and discard several per week. (If you are neither a regular at a Restaurant, nor Friends or Family with a Restaurant worker, and/or If you are too shy to ask, you May be able to buy a suitable bucket that is filled with Popcorn, or one that is empty and meant to be filled with Dog chow or parrot seed or Chicken Feed Pellets, at a Feed Store where you can buy that Stuff by weight and bring your own Container.)
Then get your ingredients. You'll need 500g of thick-rolled Oats, 500g of Instant/thin-rolled Oats, 400g of coarsely-ground Linseed/flaxseed, 100g of Chia seeds, two teaspoonfuls of mild-curry-spice-mix, and three teaspoonfuls of sea salt. Throw all of these ingredients into your bucket, Close the Lid Well, and Mix thoroughly by shaking or turning the bucket over many times. Or alternatively, Mix thoroughly by stirring with a large spoon before closing the lid.
Variations include using all instant Oats instead of half-and-half, replacing Up to half of the Thick-rolled Oats with thick-rolled flakes of other grains such as wheat/spelt, replacing the Curry with another Spice mix (like a spicier Curry, or Tandoori, or paprika-and-chili, or Mediterranean Herbs, or Pumpkin-Spice), using really fancy pink Salt, or half a teaspoon of Potassium Chloride in addition to the three spoons of Salt, or adding some oily seeds, like de-hulled hempseeds or sunflower seeds, or pumpkinseeds, or chopped hazelnuts, or sesame, or a Combination of several different seeds/nuts, Up to total 200g (per 1kg of oat).
When you are ready to make oat buns alongside the other Thing you are going to bake, boil some water. Measure two Cups (500mL) of the dry mixture into a bowl, and add one Cup (250mL) of hot (boiling/almost-boiling) water. Mix thoroughly with a fork immediately after adding the water, then add a 2-3 tablespoons of Apple cider vinegar, and Mix thoroughly again. Then you can leave the mixture alone for a few minutes and do whatever needs to be done for the other Thing you're Baking, but it's important to Mix before it becomes hard to mix from the water being absorbed unevenly. Within 10 minutes or so, all the water will be absorbed into a VERY thick/Stiff dough, that is easiest to knead and shape If you get your Hand wet with water before touching it. The best shape for baking this bread is a round flat shape Like a thick Cookie roughly the size of an adult human's palm. Two Cups of dry mixture is enough for making about six of these buns, so you should divide the contents of the Bowl into six parts. If you Happen to have Silicone moulds for large Muffins or small pies, you can Just Put each Portion into one of those moulds and Press it flat (to a finger's width) with wet hands. If you don't have moulds available, shape the dough by Hand into flat palm-sized circles, and lay them on whatever nonstick surface (foil, ceramic, metal…)to bake on. Let the requirements of the other Thing you are baking, decide your Temperature for you. If the Heat is 180°C (356°F), then it's going to Take about 15 minutes to Bake the oat buns, and the hotter the Temperature, the shorter the time. They don't rise AT ALL, nor should they shrink unless they've been baking too Long. If you want to eat them right from the oven, you can Break them into pieces and Dip in Something. If you want to use them for Sandwiches, days later, you should use a serrated knife to cut the top and bottom halves apart.

Caramelized Cauliflower Pasta with Caper Butter
Serving: 2-3
Ingredients
200 g of pasta*, I used strozzapreti (gluten-free if needed)
½ large cauliflower, divided into florets
4 baby zucchini (optional), sliced
2 garlic cloves, very finely diced
2-3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil + more to grill vegetables
3 tbsp capers, chopped finely + a few whole to decorate
3 tbsp lemon juice + zest
smoked salt, to taste
black pepper, to taste
mild-heat chilli flakes (I used Turkish pul biber)
2 tsbp of toasted breadcrumbs from crusty white bread**, seasoned with salt
a handful of fresh mint leaves
1 tbsp pine nuts, toasted on a dry pan
Directions
Heat up a griddle pan on the stove (you can also use a BBQ for this or an oven at 400° F / 200° C). Cut cauliflower florets into halves. Brush them with a bit of olive oil and season with smoked salt. Arrange cauliflower pieces cut side down on a hot pan and do not turn over until they caramelize nicely. Then pop them to the other side for a few minutes. They will end up with a bit of a crunch but won’t be raw. Do the same with your zucchini slices (if using). Set aside.
Cook pasta al dente and drain.
In a small bowl, combine chopped capers with 2 tbsp of lemon juice and 1 tbsp of olive oil. Season with salt and pepper and mix well.
Warm up the remaining tablespoon (or two if you don’t mind a bit more oil) of olive oil on a medium size pan. Once warm, add finely diced garlic and let it cook for 1-2 minutes. Make sure you stir it all the time as garlic burns easily, especially when chopped that finely. Turn off the heat and add caper ‘butter’ mixture to the sautéed garlic. Stir well.
Add drained pasta to the pan and mix it around well to coat it in the caper ‘butter’. Add grilled vegetables and mix well.
Serve with a sprinkling of toasted pine nuts, lemon zest, chili flakes, breadcrumbs and fresh mint.
Notes
As this dish isn’t one of those with a large amount of sauce, it is best to use the type of pasta which has fairly large and smooth surface area like: strozzapreti, farfelle, penne, rigatoni or pappardelle.
I made my breadcrumbs by slicing 2 day old crusty bread into very thin slices and then toasting them on a hot griddle pan brushed with a bit of olive oil. I toasted them on both sides until nicely browned, cooled them and then crushed them in a pestle and mortar.

Light Shinning in the Blue Mirror
Episode five
previous | all | next
At first, Lono didn’t seem in the mood, but… When he started cooking, he becomes a serious Lono. He seemed to be working wit his usual serious expression. Delicious looking dishes are benign prepared one after another. I will stay by Lono’s side and support him as much as i can.
[Lono, is this presentation okay?]
LONO :: Yes! Thank you Aruji-sama!
LONO :: Now it looks great! Now the question is, do you like the taste?
[Lono’s cooking is fine]
LONO :: I hope so. It seems that nobles has much more refined plates than commoners like me
LONO :: To think that i would cook for such a rude person… to be honest, i wasn’t motivated at first
[But you never give up]
LONO :: Yeah.. that is a matter of pride for me as a chef
LONO :: After all, eating delicious food is important!
LONO :: If he was full in a good mood… he might become more approachable
LONO :: If you get enough nutrition, you might even have the energy to go outside
LONO :: Hehe.. and to tell you the truth..
LONO :: Today’s meal wasn’t made for that nobleman… I made it for my Aruji-sama
[For me?]
LONO :: Yes! Because it’s better to have the feeling, “i want to make this for someone special”
LONO :: Because it makes me feel happy too.
LONO :: I hope that your physical and mental health will improve and that you will feel more energetic. I did some research into these ingredients and menu items.
LONO :: Apparently red meat is good for relieving stress! Also fermented foods, dairy products, nuts and wen it come to fruit, bananas are good.
LONO :: So, today menu is,,, broccoli cheese soup, nut and tomato salad…
LONO :: Red meat steak…. And for desert, we have banana pudding!
LONO :: Hehehe, ot be honest, i’d like to eat it right now, Aruji-sama
LONO :: But it would be a hassle to keep the nobleman waiting. I’ll comeback later to enjoy some freshly made food!
[Thank you, Lono]
LONO :: No no! We are the ones who should be thanking you.
LONO :: This time, i was able to realize once again just how blessed i am in my everyday life.
LONO :: Even if it’s the same dish… the satisfaction can be so different on whose face you imagine eating it.
LONO :: The feeling of being able to be of use to the butlers and Aruji-sama makes me so happy.
[Sounds like Lono]
LONO :: Well… that's all i can do
LONO :: So, in order to put Aruji-sama’s heart at ease… we decided to encourage you in any way we could
LONO :: Of course, completing grequests is important, but what’s more important is the health of the client.
[Thank you, Lono]
LONO :: Hehe… sorry for the long talk. The delicious food will get cold soon.
LONO :: Well then…. Shall i deliver the food to Mr.Miller?
LONO :: I’m sure he’ll complain about something. But i’ll just smile and bear it
LONO :: …But i’ll take a bottle of chili peppers with me just in case
[Oh that’s right]
We put the food on a cart and roll it into the Dinning room. In the Dining room Nac and the others had already arranged the tableware and prepared the wine
And when everything was ready, i politely summoned Mr.Miller
Miller Mansion DInning Room
MILLER :: Hmm…! It’s ot quite bad
MILLER :: It’s impressive for a lowly demon butler, i commend you.
LONO :: Ha ha ha… thank you
MILLER :: Also, this wine taste good. Where is it from?
LUCAS :: Yes, it is an 8 year old toblis
LUCAS :: Today we have this brand Mr.Miller… it is perfect for connoisseurs
MILLER :: I see… That was a good idea
MILLER :: I like it, i’ll buy about 100 boxes of the same wine!
LUCAS :: Hehe… i understand
MU :: ….Huh? I think Miller-sama just became an adult…
MU :: are such people accustomed to drinking wine?
NAC :: heh, of course not
NAC :: What Lucas has prepared is… an inexpensive wine that is easy to drink even fro beginners
NAC :: Of course, i won’t tell him that
[That’s right]
LONO :: I see.. So in short.., he’s just trying to show off
MILLER :: Hey there! Did you say something?
LONO :: No, nothing
LONO :: By the way… is it time for desert
MILLER :: Desert… oh well
MILLER :: But… you have to be able to judge those things based on your Aruji-sama’s facial expressions, right?
MILLER :: A first class butler is one who anticipated what his Aruji-sama wants before they evne asks. That point still remains.
LONO :: …. I will do my best….
LONO :: ..Phew, hold on, hold on..
Lono was holding a bottle of chili peppers in one hand… Even afterwards he continued to treat Miller with forced polite hospitality.
After a while
MILLER :: Huh… it was surprisingly delicious
LUCAS :: I’m glad you were satisfied, Mr.Miller
LUCAS :: After your meal.. How about taking a walk in the garden to work off your hunger?
LUCAS :: The sunshine is warm today… it’s perfect for a walk.
MILLER :: Hmph!... won’t fall for that Lucas!
MILLER :: There’s no need to go out to the garden, just walking around the mansion is good enough!
MILLER :: After all, my mansion is spacious!
LONO :: … “My mansion”... isn’t it just an inheritance from your parents that came rolling in?
MILLER :: Hey you there! Did you essay something?
LONO :: No, nothing
LONO:: But.. don’t you get bored staying in the mansion all the time?
LONO :: Theres plenty of fun things to do outside, including tons pf delicious food and drinks.
MILLER :: Hmp.. what are you talking about? You can get delicious food and alcohol without leaving the mansion ru…
MILLER :: You guys have just proven that.
NAC :: Yes, and it seems like he’s just going to indulge even more
MILLER :: Alright, I decided! In the future, i plan to invite top chefs from all over the country
MILLER :: I have plenty of money. Yes, i’ll hire a sommelier
LONO :: … this is not good. It’s like he has no intension of leaving the mansion
NAC :: Yes, and it look like he’s going to indulge even more.
NAC :: If you indulge in this kind of debauchery… it won’t be good for you.
MU :: Hmm… Why is he so reluctant to go outside!
LUCAS :: …Mr.Miller. I understand how you may find social interaction bothersome.
LUCAS :: Sir Finley, head of the Grosvennor family, has always been fed up with the flattery of those around him
LUCAS :: However, being born into a noble family… it's inevitable to socialize with those around you
LUCAS :: To reassure Sir Finley…. Would you please return to social life as before?
LUCAS :: Sir Finley is worried about you Mr.Miller
MILLER :: Hmm.. i think what my uncle is worried about is the reputation of the Grosvennor family
MILLER :: So were my parents. Ther family name and reputation always came first…
MILLER :: I was raised to always be concerned about how others see me… I never paid any attention to my own feelings.
MILLER :: Everytime is ee myself in the mirror. I feel like my parents were constantly watching me
MILLER :: But my parents are long dead now. I have nothing tying me down now.
MILLER :: Deep inside the mansion, out of reach of other people’s eyes… i’ll do my best to live my life however i like.
LUCAS :: Mr.Miller…..

So The Archive Undying is one of my favourite books of the year (and I've read some truly spectacular books) for many reasons. One of them is the descriptions of food in it. I was wondering if you could talk a bit more about the spices that Sunai uses and the teas they drink, so I can feed my obsession with the book in more ways?
OHOHOHO 1) thank you, 2) i also am a complete nut about good food descriptions in fiction so here, for your indulgence, some answers to your questions + some extra notes:
Sunai's nomadic existence means he will squirrel away whatever he can get his hands on, but for that curry in the first chapters I was imagining a spice mix that he whipped up at some point when he had access to a full kitchen to snitch from. That curry still kind of sucks because he doesn't have much to build it from. What he WANTS is veg, protein, and aromatics, and all he has is maybe some dried veg (if we're being generous) + maaaybe some dried soup base + some coriander and cumin and chili and the dregs of a mix to pull together with water and pour over rice. DISAPPOINTING.
Tea is v popular in part because it's kind of a luxury -- all agriculture in non-AI cities has to make the most of whatever space is considered safe enough to actually cultivate en masse, and you're generally going to prioritize sustenance over tea. So as a consequence there's a ton of variety in tea, bc you get people growing all sorts of personal projects (tea plants, herbs) as well as foraging in the wilds (if they can get away with it).
Khuon Mo's cuisine is fruit and seafood-forward; chili is popular but used more as an accent than a fundamental flavor; favored starch is rice; edible flowers for formal occasions/rituals (funerals, marriage, coming-of-age, etc.).
Veyadi absolutely would have just bitten straight into that onion if Sunai hadn't stopped him.

Mace Has a Tooka
(was feeling the love for Master Windu in the Chili's tonight and this fic just typed itself. Enjoy!)
Her name was Regal and it suited her as she sat primly on the arm of Mace's beat up old couch observing her domain with a calm disdain. Mace had been working on flimsy work so the pads still littered the table and several cushions of said couch and also the floor and Mace knew she hated messes. It was clear to him even without a Jedi's ability to connect to animals that she was judging him for leaving the mess so long.
"You don't get to judge me when you don't help with any of the chores." He said with a huff but started stacking the completed forms in a pile. She daintily licked one of her little claws and rubbed it over one of her brown speckled ear cones without looking at him.
"I should have told Depa to leave you in the trash." He grumbled and earned a deserved side eye from the creature for the comment.
Regal had been brought to his quarters when Depa was just a padawan and had found skinny matted tooka crawling through the garbage and had dragged it back to beg Mace to help it. She had promised that once the tooka was cleaned up and healthy she'd find it a home. He should have sensed the trap as it was laid.
He did realize his mistake the night he heard Depa talking to the creature and addressing it by name but by then it was too late. Thankfully Regal had a compatible personality to the Master of the Order. She preferred to share quiet company and a tidily kept space- despite or perhaps because of her previous life outside. She suffered no fools in her home and had once driven Qui-Gon Jinn up into a tree hissing and spitting at the man when he had barged into Mace's quarters during a bad migraine episode unknowingly. Mace appreciated her passion in either caring over him or annoying Jinn.
He had worried when she had disappeared from his quarters after the start of the Clone Wars thinking maybe she had finally come of an age for her species that he needed to accept she had gone to join the force in private to spare him pain.
Instead, Ponds had found her somehow in Mace's quarters on their ship with three kittens suckling at her stomach. Lightning had taken no time at all in sharing holos their new mascot and the kits to the entire GAR.
Depa had eagerly taken a little silver kit saying it was a sign from the force it belonged with Grey.
Plo had pretended to deliberate several days before agreeing to take the burgundy and silver spotted one but there were quickly posts of it cuddled with Wolffe both napping under Plo's cloak.
The last kit was white and red in a pattern that looked just slightly too close to the Coruscant Guard's armor that he couldn't help but enlist Hound's help in sneaking it into Fox's office.
Mace shouldn't have been surprised when Regal's offspring had apparently taken one look at Palpatine and went nuts tripping the Chancellor down a flight of stairs where, according to the unified accounts of the Guard, his lightsaber activated and he was unfortunately impaled upon it.
Mace didn't ask any further questions and accepted it despite the fact he had more than 18 stab wounds when the Jedi examined the corpse.
Running a hand over the soft fur, he took a moment to smile softly. Then he yelped as she bit his hand and flicked her ears toward the datapads he had gotten distracted from cleaning.
Yes, Regal lived up to her name.

Could you do Drayton Sawyer (and other Sawyers of your choice if you feel like it) reacting to a gender neutral or male reader getting pretty seriously hurt by one of their victims during an escape attempt? -☎️
Hey! Hope you like it!
Drayton Sawyer
Drayton may be a jerk at times, but he has a soft spot for the people he cares about, even if he won’t admit it. He is always making sure you and his brothers don’t get hurt.
When Drayton learns that you got injured from a victim that escaped his brothers’ grasp, he goes nuts. He’s all over his brothers in a matter of seconds: screaming and smacking them with his broom, telling them to go find the victim and shred them to pieces.
The victim would be so shredded up you wouldn’t even recognize who they were and they'd probably get thrown in the dumpster. Drayton’s orders. Whoever hurts Drayton’s s/o is not worthy of being a meal at the Sawyer table.
While his brothers are taking care of the victim, Drayton immediately rushes to your side and examines your injury. Damn, you really twisted your arm badly from colliding with the ground after being shoved pretty hard.
There is still quite a fair amount of old but still usable medical supplies laying around, after all, the Sawyers get quite a lot of injuries. Of that old medical supplies is a sling of sorts that Drayton uses to bundle your arm in.
As Drayton takes care of your injury, he scolds you every second. Shocker. He tells you how careless you were and how you could have gotten yourself killed.
He never leaves your side for the rest of the day. He’ll also make you some of his famous chili too! 🙂
Don’t tease him though for being a bit of a softy because he might smack you with his broom too.

Kleo's GG Mini Cheesecakes
Hello my dear followers and random visitors of my blog.
As you know, some time ago I shared with you cakes I came up with that were inspired by the personalities of Kihyun (Monsta X) and Felix (Stray Kids).
But you know I could never stop there, right?
So yeah, you've guessed it. I made another dessert inspired by a person's characteristic traits. 😎 Yes, Kleo ain't just a decent tarot reader, she's also a goddess of baking... okay... maybe not that high. Sorry. I'm just really proud this time because it just came out so well.
Anyway!
This time I was actually inspired by one of my favourite VAs. I have already mentioned him here in one of the posts - Gentle Geek (Reddit - Patreon).
Do you want to see pics?
You have no choice, sorry. 😂
What is it made of and how it reflects Gentle Geeks personality? Well, I think the ingredients will give you hints 😏
The base is made of coconut flour, shredded cashew nuts and almonds (plenty of nuts 😂) cocoa, eggs, banana (🍌), oil and sugar. The only part that got baked and it's both crunchy due to the nuts and like soft and moist thanks to the banana... Seriously people... It's just perfect! I'll use this batter for cookies next time. Add some chocolate chips and boom! And it's gluten free.
The mascarpone cheese filling is smooth, creamy and with a dash of vanilla.
And the topping is a Mango&Pineapple&Chili flakes jelly - gooey, juicy, fruity, spicy&hot! 🥭🍍🌶 🔥
Don't ask me for detailed recipe, I don't measure things. I improvise in kitchen and add ingredients how I feel like it 😂 Yes, people do hate this about me because they can never learn my recipes. 😎
So yeah! This was Kleo's GG Mini Cheesecakes post.
Tell me what you think.
Making desserts inspired by people is clearly my new hobby. 😁
