Well -- OKAY THEN. In THIS edition of “everyone is a bitch-ass hypocrite” -- Double Savage, episode 8 thoughts:

1) Win intimately reconciles with (a clearly messed-up, clearly vengeful, do not go near her) Rung, even though Rung categorizes herself as a criminal, as Win says he’ll love her no matter what,

2) At the same time, Win CONTINUES to condemn Korn for HIS being a “criminal,” weak ass, 

3) Win CONTINUES to think that he’ll be able to “put the bad people away” without using his HEAD (until the very end of the episode, thank gawd) as to who exactly the bad people are (which we can surmise at this point that Rung knows, too),

4) The PO-POs continue to be hypocrites for turning a blind eye to Ah’s operation because of RANKS (?!) and moolah (more on this in a sec)*,

5) Let me argue for a sec that Korn himself is also being a touch hypocritical, in that he’s being portrayed as someone who knows the way of the world, and still wants his tight circle to not get involved in his business, which like, homey, impossible at this point, because you kept/keep showing up to places and seeing all your old people, and

6) Rung herself is a hypocrite for blaming Korn’s family for her fate, because, GURL, DID YOU FORGET THAT YOU WERE THE ONE TO HOP IN THE OG DRUG VAN? ACCOUNTABILITY!!! And now you’re selling drugs to Pea/Satang! Good lord!

PHEW. In other words, very many people are being bitch-asses in this show at this point. Sounds very New Siwaj-y, if you’ll let me project. 

All that being said. I found out an answer to a question that I’ve long had, which is that Li doesn’t work, and was always expected to live at home, which I think is still a fascinating slice of Thai/Thai-Chinese culture that I need to know more about. And the way in which the patriarchal expectations of Win fall on his shoulders as he wonders if he can support the family without the store, and the dad having saved money to make it happen. 

Win doesn’t have a gray area. I think he’s the only character that doesn’t have it. And he didn’t need it -- because when he was growing up, he didn’t need survival techniques.

For all the time that Rung spent with BOTH brothers in their childhood -- Rung knew/knows this, and now knows how to take advantage of Win and his hypocrisy, because she knows that he was never a critical, survivalist thinker. Which likely explains, to an extent, her continued attraction to Korn, as she’s now figuring out a way to survive.

(Let me pause to say that I CONTINUE TO LOVE FILM, I love her leather-and-eyeliner-and-pouts-and-gold-chain-era, and by my count, she’s now kissed Nanon, Ohm, AND Perth in shows, and JUST GET ‘EM GURL, GET ‘EM, KEEP IT UP, HONEY.)

So with Win’s lack of a gray area -- man, he gets played all around him. The police are messy. Ah’s operation is messy. Korn’s loyalties are messy. Rung’s HEADSTATE is messy. Li now knows about Ah and the roles he’s played in the community, and recognizes that just condemning Ah is not so easy and is messy.

The only one still looking for black-and-white is Win. His whole life had been black and white, because he was the golden child. @shortpplfedup noted so succinctly in my last Double Savage post that that golden child mindset has messed Win up SO MUCH, because HIS frame was that Korn was ultimately a LOSER (because he indirectly absorbed that from his dad -- and never fought his dad on that point), and should NOT be the focus of Rung’s attention.

And Rung has learned so much from her time away to know that she can take advantage of Win’s dualistic perspective, which she’s doing, because she’s (wrongly, imo) revengeful towards Korn’s family. 

@miscellar is reading my thoughts exactly on this show -- that it’s becoming more and more of a soapy mess. But I think what I appreciated about the last two episodes -- because I’m me, a sucker for family trauma -- is that the show has been brought BACK to the center of the family trauma, and is reminding us that all of this is because the dad fucked things up so hard. We’ll see in the last week of the series next week that Korn will consider ponying up to help his dad. The dad created all of these fucking nasty dualities that just SNARED EVERYONE in. The person operating outside of all of this family drama/trauma was Ah, who knew how the world worked from the start. 

And at least Li is the one (maybe besides Korn, but again, Korn is being a hypocrite here too, for not reading everything as deeply as I think he can) who’s recognizing on the family side that shit’s complicated enough to think about it and to ask how it all ended up this way. How could people think of Ah as a good person? Her wheels are turning, and I wonder if that’ll have an impact next week. I hope so -- although next week looks seriously messy, and I wonder how the show’s going to get itself out of it.

*I forgot to add that some folks on Twitter seem to think the Captain is one of the guys who ran Ah off on the road -- I’m open to the idea.

OKAY LETS TAKE A MASSIVE STEP BACK

What I am talking about is something entirely separate from kink/fetish, and I also acknowledge that yes, twinkification and feminization happen. They exist. Heteronormative roles ARE GENUINELY pushed onto queer relationships.

What I am expressing here is about gender expression. How that can relate to gender identity, how that subject can often become misconstrued with twinkification and other such terms.

Take for example, the idea that Izuku (or any character for that matter) is not a twink for x, y, and z reasons. The person explaining these reasons, as I’ve read them, uses the justifications of heteronormative roles being pushed onto same sex relationships, that the character is strong, and not innately feminine and eccentric (take aoyama as this example for what someone may mean by twink and feminine eccentricity).

Imo I feel as though there is a disconnect being made by “trying to fight gay stereotypes”, because SOMETIMES PEOPLE JUST ACT LIKE STEREOTYPES. And I say this briefly, but it in fact just creates well… more stereotypes, just onto different people.

But that’s the thing, men and femininity don’t automatically equal heteronormativity. And, to take this out of the mha fandom context, bringing this discussion into general queer conversations I feel is actually important! If we talk about heteronormative roles in a queer relationship’s sex life, fetish, or what have you is a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT CONVERSATION all together! Bedroom talk and all of that is not logical, sometimes not even pertaining to how a person actually feels about themself, but they just like it for the taboo. (Ex, a masculine person cross dresses for bedroom stuff)

Drag queens are who brought this community together throughout the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s in the US. Drag shows and the money they brought in saved actual real lives. Twinks as they stand EXIST in these same umbrellas of male gender expression, and it’s also extremely extremely EXTREMELY important to me to bring up a character like Izuku and how he relates to androgyny. What does that say about his character? Because to me, it says A LOT.

The fandom imo has taken a long time to realize (and this includes myself, I also took a long time to realize too) that Izuku is someone who struggles with his masculine identity. Not in the sense of actually being transgender, but in the very real and very alive existence as a cisgender person being told that you are not enough to feel like you are who you say you are. “I am the deku who always wins”, “Stop being a crybaby”, etc etc.

Deku has to abide by toxic masculinity to try to grasp at the feelings he’s told it will bring. Think, taking the ofa quirk to feel strong maybe? Orrr, how about we use the fact that he didn’t fight for himself and a style that fit HIM until way later in the series because “it’s what allmight would do”.

…but that’s the thing. We didn’t get it because Izuku as he is perceived, is sensitive. He is soft. He is androgynous. And those are traits we see and automatically assume that he somehow has this security that Katsuki doesn’t (yet the fandom never talks about how Katsuki wears eyeliner with no problem, meanwhile telling Himiko that his only perceptions of relationships are “sharing crepes”).

There is so much more I could talk about. I could go on and on and on AND ON about this topic because I, a trans masculine person, knows a lot about it. I’ve lived it. My entire social circles and LIFE is about gender expression and gender identity. On a very real and very personal scale I am going to discuss how a character that I feel strongly about, is also a character built to relate to me.

chrissie white or rebecca white? chrissie! there was so many missed opportunities with chrissie, they decide to make her frame andy and that basically be it for her character? and then just as they start dressing her in good outfits they kill her off? the lachlan stuff after the crash would’ve been way more dramatic if it was his mum he was kidnapping and not his aunt who’d not been in the show as long imo

reunion 1.0 or reunion 2.0? i love reunion 1.0 a lot, it’s soft, it’s cute, it’s just them - but of course reunion 2.0 has to win this, an entire ep dedicated to them? awkward dancing and club scenes? and then those final scenes? mwah!

alex or mike? gonna be controversial and say alex, i know he’s hated but he didn’t do anything!😂 the second half of 2017 is pure comedy just accept it

the love we stole or make you feel my love? i didn’t listen to tlws until their final episode and i hate slow adele songs sooo, gonna have to be the first one!

lay-by or barn? the lay-by was in danger of becoming one of my hated overused phrases/references the amount of times they mentioned in it in the end but it’s too iconic not to be chosen... poor neglected barn

proposal 1.0 or proposal 2.0? proposal 1.0 for me! the second one was cute and all but like i said, i live for the drama, and ssw and its aftermath did that!

2016 or 2018? how about 2015? i’ve not rewatched 2018 since it aired and i only ever rewatch certain bits of 2016, not two of my fave years but i’d have to say 2016 purely for ssw and their reunion - and robert’s redemption of course!

chas or diane? neither really, chas just needs to get away from paddy and poor diane really isn’t given too much, even pre-covid, but she’s iconic!

2x08 The Sins of the Father

It ought to be said, Morgause makes a hell of an entrance.

Uther was a lot more chill about Arthur picking up a gauntlet this time.

I'm glad they made no secret that Arthur was Just flat out beaten by her, rather than saying he let her win.

They make zero explanations about why this challenger was given a guest room in the castle and it bothers me to no end

Uther: she was obviously lying, nobody knew your mother she was a secret hidden queen now go to your room!

I don't envy Gaius having to deliver that news to Uther. Surprised he handled it so well.

Impressive that a lake that big never goes more than three feet deep.

Morgause's timeline seems muddled to me. For whatever reason she was born at Camelot, but she's Morgana's half sister. Fine. Gaius was there and helped smuggle her out, as a baby. Fine. Yet she knew Ygraine? Or was that a lie to lure Arthur in? Morgause could've learned the story from Nimueh and used it to manipulate Arthur. But either way Morgause would've been born before Uther's purge, which means he conquered Camelot and ruled for an undetermined period of time, without outlawing magic - Nimueh said she'd been a lady at court in Camelot. Is it me or is it just a bit confusing and muddled?

The big fight scene between Arthur and Uther is extraordinary. Tony is wonderful and he was great, as always, but Bradley *really* shined. I guess part of it is because we don't get to see Arthur that anguished very often, we've seen him angry and we've seen him hurt but up until this point we've never really seen him so pained he's moved to violence - and I can only really think of one other scene in the whole series that portrays that particularly complex emotion again - but I really felt for him, it was a very moving performance imo.

Tony I think shines even more in the following scene, that quietly threatening secret meeting with Merlin.

And really, poor fucking Merlin. Not only has he saved Uther's life AGAIN, but he's been thanked for reminding his best friend that magic users are actually all evil, and called an ally in the war on magic or whatever the fuck. I mean talk about OUCH. Feels like there was a cut in that scene between Uther and Merlin, maybe they cut out Uther giving Merlin a bonus. And a raise. And some PTO. Lord knows the boy deserves it.

Commentary by Bradley, Tony, and Colin.

Lots of joking, apparently Bradley and Colin improved a whole bit about a one legged old woman challenging Merlin to a fight, but that was (thankfully) cut out. Best take tho: talking about Morgause's makeup they mention the heavy eyeliner being popular in medieval times, and Tony says, "I was thinking of using that as Uther, do you think that would work?" and I just

Ugh. One of the reasons I wanted to do a full rewatch with the DVD extras is because I've seen it mentioned on Twitter that Bradley said something stupid shit in these commentaries. I've just come to example number one. First off, friends, in case you don't know: do not call women females. It's dehumanizing. Secondly, the fact that he says this over an actual Bechdel moment, combined with him not walking it back after neither Tony nor Colin is receptive to this line of commentary, makes it actually worse.

Apparently there was a version of the script that included Gwen passing by with a cart full of hay to catch Arthur when he fell, and everyone agreed that a step too far.

High praise for the director, particularly for some of the emotionally challenging scenes.

Colin drawing parallels between Uther and Merlin that I didn't even catch. Uther's use of magic to produce an heir that resulted in the death of his wife, and Merlin's use of magic to save Arthur's life that almost resulted in his mother's life in S1. Obviously they each reacted to that quite differently but they do have that in common.

OKAY I’ve now seen Wonder Woman 1984 and hooo boy I have opinions

SPOILER ALERT if u haven’t seen the movie yet.

people saying it's a mess were not wrong. pedro pascal did an amazing job with his part tho, honestly it was like the movie was about him and wonder woman was just a side character. 

kristen wiig was rly good too, her performance made the change to cheetah's backstory work, but it also kinda made her like?? not really a villain? the moment where she's supposed to be "going bad" felt more like a triumph. only people she hurt were a r*pist and a few cops/secret service.

the writing left a LOT to be desired though, which is disappointing considering how (imo) good the first one was (though i can’t say it was without flaws...)

the first thing that REALLY put me off was uh. why the fuck did they have to put steve trevor in someone else’s body?? what the fuck even were the rules on that? it was never really made clear?? but they did show that diana KNEW this was someone else’s body after implying that she and steve had sex the night before??? which is like??? no matter how much magic shenanigans is going on it’s very easy to spot how r*pe-y that sounds??? there was literally no reason to write it like that. like any of that. at all.

more minor issues include but are not limited to:

diana never once over the course of this movie looked like she was in the 80s. in the first movie it can be waved off as her being fresh off of a magical island and she’s basically a demigod, so of course she looks amazing at all times, but in this one like. she just looks really out-of-place despite having lived among humans disguised as a regular person all this time? also why did she lose her makeup in the scene where she lets go of steve and then have perfectly applied eyeliner after putting on the gold armor. did she really just take the time to do that while the world was minutes away from nuclear destruction? i wouldn’t care if it was always on but like, it was very clear she had to re-apply. priorities.

i don’t think they ever explained why she was like. doing the cheeky “this-is-our-little-secret” thing every time she saved someone either. what is she hiding the existence of WW for? like, her face is already the exact same, anyone who knows her could instantly recognize her anyway, but they decided to add that the superhero’s existence itself has to be a secret too? i just don’t understand.

the flying scene felt like it had very little buildup. like, i get what they were going for but if i was paying as much attention as the average theatre-goer i would not have understood it at all.

the fight scene of the climax was boring as hell and hard to follow at the same time. this is wonder woman and cheetah!!! i've seen more powerful fight scenes from power rangers!! i've seen faster action in tmnt!! what the hell?? it was all in the dark and partially underwater and the way cheetah is defeated???? is just by there being a fucking powerline that she cut falling into the water with them??? fucking really? she doesn’t even die she’s just knocked out for a minute so why tf was diana struggling like she was so sad to do it?

wonder woman wins by... sitting in a corner and talking. and somehow her appeal to people’s humanity just works on a worldwide scale. like damn i wish we had fucking known that was the answer. it really was just the fuckin “stop racism” meme basically. the only turnarounds i really felt made sense were (ironically) the main villains, max and barbara.
