I'm not explaining why re-imagining characters as POC is not the same as white-washing, here of all places should fucking understand.

#personal #delete later #no patrick. “black washing” is not as harmful as white washing.#come on guys get it together #seeing people in my reblogs talk about “reverse racism” and double standards is genuinely hypocrisy #say it with me: white washing is intrinsically tied to a historical and systematic erasure of poc figures literature and history.#it is an inherently destructive act that deplatforms underrepresented faces and voices #in favor of a light-skinned aesthetic hegemony #redesigning characters as poc is an act of dismantling symbols of whiteness in fiction in favor of diversification and reclamation #(note that i am talking about individual acts by individual artists as was the topic of this discourse. not on an industry-scale)#redesigning characters as poc is not tied to hundreds of years of systemic racism and abuse and power dynamics. that is a fact.#you are not replacing an underrepresented person with an oft-represented person. it is the opposite #if you feel threatened or upset or uncomfortable about this then sorry but you are not aware of how much more worse it is for poc #if representation is unequal then these acts cannot be equivalent. you can't point to an imbalanced scale and say they weigh the same #if you recognize that bipoc people are minorities then you should recognize that these two things are not the same #while i agree that “black washing” can lead to color-blind casting and writing the behavior here is on an individual level #a black artist drawing their favorite anime character as black because they feel a shared solidarity is not a threat to you #i mean. most anime characters are east asian and i as an east asian person certainly don't feel threatened or erased. neither should you.#there's much to be said about the politics of blackwashing (i don't even know if that's the right word for it)#but point standing. whitewashing is an inherently more destructive act. both through its history of maintaining power dynamics #and the simple fact that it's taking away from groups of people who have less to begin with #if you feel upset or uncomfortable about a fictional white character being redesigned as poc by an artist on twitter #i sincerely hope you're able to explore these feelings and find avenues to empathizing with poc who have had their figures #(both real and fictional) erased; buried; and replaced by white figures for hundreds of years #i sincerely hope you can understand the difference in motivations and connotations behind whitewashing and blackwashing #classic bixels “i'm not talking about this chat. i'm not” (puts my media studies major to use in the tags and talks the fuck outta it)

trying to start S2 Ep 6 of IWTV and I've already paused it like 10x in the first 10 minutes because it's just kinda getting hard to care what they're going on about and I keep getting distracted tbh

#idk if i will end up finishing it #it's kinda losing me #idk it's frustrating that this show def cares about the characters & the source material but there's just a few too many things bugging me #like i havent watched any other VC adaptation before that actually felt to me like the actors and writers had read the books #and cared about the deeper parts of the characters other than this one (and MAYBE tom cruise as lestat in the 90s movie actually lol)#so thats a nice win for it #but also its just not doing it for me aesthetically and some of the show writing choices and changes ruined certain big things for me #like ruined me sympathizing with lestat and/or caring about his relationship with louis at all. and some of the stuff about claudia too #and now im just getting confused by the plot and i dont know if it's because im zoning out or mixing up the show timeline w the books #maybe ill just take a break from it and finish rereading the third book instead #this is kinda why i dont watch shows or ever finish them either usually too like #they so rarely stay good all the way through and its just hard for me to stay interested past a season or two regardless #i feel like i can only maintain interest in short form videos (like movies) and long form writing (like novels/book series) sometimes #not a big fan of short stories and not a big fan of long tv series #i have no idea why #other than i find tv series often overstay their welcome and short stories often leave me unsatisfied in the opposite way #p #vmpcs

A lot of people have different answers for this ranging from she hates everything about LOONA and the idol industry to she's taking a mental health break and being forced to post on Fromm, but I think the easiest answer is that Hyeju just... doesn't like taking photos of herself. She mentioned recently on Fromm that it's been hard to take photos for the app because she simply doesn't take photos of herself unless it's for work, and she's mentioned before on multiple Vlives that she pretty much only takes photos if she thinks she feels obligated to for the benefit of fans. More than that, she doesn't even like looking at her face, it's awkward/uncomfortable, so I think maintaining an instagram where fans would expect her to post selfies, as well as keeping up on the aesthetic side of things (like how the feed looks, or social stuff like responding to stories and comments) is probably exhausting even just as a concept to her. Inexplicably she's very self conscious about her aesthetic sense, and often turns any arts and crafts endeavor (like with Vivi's birthday 'card' as seen in LTV) into a joke to avoid scrutiny.

Of course she's literally under no obligation to post selfies and she could just post landscapes or sunsets, which she does like taking photos of, and I'm sure few would complain, but the pressure as a celebrity to post selfies specifically is probably what makes her reluctant to.

And in case it needs saying explicitly, this is just speculation and I couldn't possibly know why

#I know I joke about her running off into the woods and disappearing to never return etc but #she actually... does like singing and dancing #and she does like interacting with fans - she wouldnt have visited her fan event cafe if she didnt #she just gets easily overwhelmed especially when it comes to 'girly' stuff like maintaining an aesthetically pleasing ig #i say 'few would complain' because inevitably. people WOULD complain if she didnt post selfies #so i think the prospect of exhaustion of hyeju wanting to post what she wants vs whats expected of her has deterred her from wanting to at #all

#this is in jest #straight size brands tend to go up to a 2x for women and 3x for men so like. you understand we need more than just that? thats nothing #not to mention that this is in reference to a post where i was complaining about how when clothing does come larger #they don't do any adjusting to maintain the style or shape or aesthetic of the clothing #which is often a completely different effect and not always what we want #so like its about more than just having the size. its about having fat designers involved in clothing production #ie all those sweater patterns that they dont test and so fat folks end up with huge fucking sleeves bc the whole sweaters just scaled up #and tripp pants that are supposed to be huge and baggy but they dont change the leg circumference to fit bigger people #and so they dont look huge and cool and baggy but rather sort of like weird skinny bellbottoms

So this new thought has to be counteracted to maintain inertia #So as I understand it he’s now caught on those lingering feelings of abandonment that Archie has left him with. and he is Not Happy.#Because just as he interpreted himself as being a replacement for Dism #He’s interpreting Archie and his little motley crew as a further refusal to move on from the past #And because Inigo acts on impulse (as seen best with the 💥 arm getting blown off) he’s using that momentary anger #to distract himself from the core issue as he lashes out ✨#He’s kind of a hypocrite that one. Stresses the importance of embracing unpleasant memories as a fundamental part of your character #(To the point of berating Idyllia for going the total memory wipe route instead)#but he is ALSO an escapist at heart. Neither of them want their definition of pain so they both have terrible routines to try avoiding it ✌#I’m sorry if this made no sense Dolphin I will probably do a retake with more braincells in the next few days #You know I’ve been analysing the design of this kindergarten in sydney for VCD #It’s called Nubo. Now I’ve always had a fondness for Scandinavian aesthetics but this is PEAK #So I went down a research rabbit hole and I came out of it with a clear concept for what Amonea Montessori School should feel like!#It’s this sort of cross-concept between stereotypical Australian architecture and hygge #Those oak panels and muted colours and glass everywhere #And I can carry through to an overall unique visual identity for Amonea #After all Byrgir should feel similarly detached from Earth in it’s own subtle ways #Tapping more into solarpunk and that overall comforting feeling for Amonea in particular~#I’m so happy :D

the thing with sims 4 is that like. when it WORKS it is actually such a fun game!!! ts2 will always have a special place in my heart because that's the first sims game i played and i met so many great friends through ts2 fan forums, but sims 4 is genuinely so fun. when it works. and when does it work? not often!!!

#there was a huge origin sale so i bought the high school years and growing together eps last night #and my game has been SOOO buggy ever since :(#it was a little buggy before but let's be real. sims 2 was buggy too. sims 2 had full-on CORRUPTION issues lmao #i can handle some bugginess but right now i'm having issues getting my sims to like. eat. i'm cheating to keep them alive lmao #i've read some ppl online saying that deleting their cc beds helped but like??? i love my cc beds #how am i supposed to maintain my bright and colorful game aesthetic without custom content beds #m.txt

Hmmm I wonder. I have the feeling I just read the same couple of books over and over, and at times only different iterations of the same story, like in that line by Borges ("the various intonations of a few metaphors").

I find recommending books without knowing anything at all about the person asking rather difficult. What I'd suggest to one may differ greatly from what I'd recommend to someone else. I'll give a list of some of my favourite books that I think are enjoyable in general:

— Thoughts by Pascal

— Cain: a mystery by Lord Byron

— The Iliad by Homer

— Crime and Punishment by Dostoievsky

— Othello by Shakespeare

— Pedro Páramo by Juan Rulfo

— Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmond Rostand

— The fragments of the Presocratics

— La Regenta by Leopoldo Alas, Clarín

— Tractatus Logico-philosophicus by Wittgenstein

— East of Eden by John Steinbeck

— Vita nova by Dante

— Contributions to the Founding of the Theory of Transfinite Numbers by Georg Cantor

— Caligula by Albert Camus

— North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell

— Peter Pan by J. M. Barrie

— Some essays by Russell. I personally love Mysticism and Logic

— Metamorphoses by Ovid

Poetry is perhaps harder to recommend because at times it translates horribly, but in general I love Baudelaire, Rimbaud, Lorca, Juan Ramón Jiménez, Rilke, Byron, Quevedo, Góngora, Lope de Vega, Horace, Catullus, Ovid, Tennyson, Maiakovsky, Garcilaso de la Vega, Oliverio Girondo, Vicente Huidobro, Emily Brontë, T. S. Eliot, Luis Cernuda and Edgar Allan Poe, to name a few.

#I talk too much #I wanted to say The tragic sense of life by Unamuno and Philosophy and Poetry by María Zambrano #but I thought maybe they'd be hard to find in translation. They're both approachable texts of philosophy beautifully written though #Unamuno's essay Vida de Don Quijote y Sancho (translated as Our Lord Don Quixote in English according to Wikipedia?) is also beautiful #I adore Schopenhauer and Nietzsche but I'm not sure I'd recommend them to anyone. Probably you can't go wrong with Kierkegaard though #I know what some of these books look like (like Wittgenstein's Tractatus or Cantor's Foundations)#but I swear they're approachable without specific academic background. The last line of Wittgenstein's Tractatus is one of my favourite #lines ever in the history of anything‚ philosophy or literature‚ but to be as hitting as it is you need to reach it at the end of the book #I think despite what it looks like both Cantor and especially Wittgenstein have an aesthetic intent in their writing #Wittgenstein in particular reminds me of Kierkegaard and Rilke and also of Unamuno and Zambrano. And of course Schopenhauer et al.#The Tractatus is very similar in my opinion to Huidobro's Altazor which is just amazing but I don't know how it would translate #These books I like in form and not just in content (although form is content like I think happens in Wittgenstein's Tractatus)#so when possible I'd read them in their original languages.I myself can't read German and know but very little of Russian and Ancient Greek #and a bit of Latin so I must be missing a lot of those. Nonetheless they're great in what I can get through translation #Perhaps you'd have the chance of enjoying them in full #If you can't read Russian I am actually quite specific with the translation of Crime and Punishment haha There's a concept #Razumikhin develops through the book at several points and often translators aren't consister with the word which makes the readers lose #the view of this development. And I happen to think the development works alongside the narrative of Svidrigailov #and also with what happens towards the end with Porfiry and Raskolnikov so I think it's important #In English there are several translations that maintain the coherence such as the one by Pevear and Volokhonsky #(the only one I can remember right now but I could check the rest). Garnett's translation is everywhere but that one doesn't do it #Hmmm Pedro Páramo in English takes some liberties and La Regenta isn't as funny which is what happens with Wuthering Heights #and The three musketeers in translation even when the translations are more accurate #I haven't recommended Wuthering Heights because I take you've read it but that's my favourite book #And I haven't recommended Pandora Hearts because that's a manga and you asked for books but it does some very interesting things #that I think are in line with many of the books listed here (as I said‚ I basically like the same few things retold over and over haha)#There are many books I am itching to recommend but that I can't do freely without some knowledge of the person asking #Like Steinbeck's arthurian novel or idk Gone with the wind #I hope this list is enjoyable enough. I'm not sure if I've been able to avoid being too partial #I suppose one has to bear the conditions of their existence and can't ever entirely get rid of themselves haha

Thinking about that one YT video that goes in-depth about liminal spaces in video gaming by sorbino, and how people that view them fall into one of two categories: those that are endowed with nostalgia and the sense that they've been there before (regardless as to whether or not they were born in the era those spaces originated from), and those that feel the looming dread and fear and the hint of otherness, that sensation of wrongness that scrapes along the surface of your brain just looking upon them.

I guess I would fall into the first camp, although not so much with the familiarity and nostalgia; it's more like I can relax and put my guard down when I see them. It reminds me how, as silly and goofy some of these places used to look, they at least had heart to them. Not like today, how you'd look at them from your window out of the car you're in and see the buildings that once were colorful and bombastic are now just redesigned to have the same cold, sterile, corporate aesthetic.

(That's a deeper dive I can get into that sort of goes outside of the bounds of this topic, but I think you get where I'm going with it.)

#tbh this was brought on by an idea i had for a story #that incorporates aspects of the '90s aesthetics while maintaining its own fantasy setting #things inspired by the drum 'n' bass and house mix beats that were prevalent in PSX games #and liminal spaces is a feature that's integral to the early era of gaming #but when i read that liminal spaces invoke horror in some ppl #i'm like '...okay how do i incorporate liminal spaces WITHOUT scaring off my readers?'#b/c i want them to have a good time. i don't want to give them a bad time lmao #my 2nd thought was 'how do i incorporate the element of liminal spacing in a written narrative?'#b/c liminal spaces are a visual feature not a written one #idk it's a weird thought to have. but all my thought processes go down a weird rabbit hole #i've been wanting to use this idea for a while. in a NaNoWriMo thing #i think i would have to do some more research & messing around in order to make it work #and nail the landing before i actually get around to writing it #but i always loved messing around with tired yet popular tropes and putting my own spin on them #i can't pass up a good challenge for my spicy writerly brain #liminal spaces #yeah why not i'll tag it. see what you all think

#manga covers #magazine covers #i hesitated to post this at first #it is a magazine appears very focused on literal tortureporn both physical and psychological #or at least that's what it looks like at a glance #it does seem to have slightly more variety in content than that #including a lot of one shots #but none of that seems to make it onto the magazine covers which maintain a very specific tone and aesthetic #the same 4 titles have basically been running since the start #and make up a lot of the cover art #but along with a lot of bunkasha's other magazines #it seems to thrive on giving off some sketchy vibes #but we'll get to them...#not doing individual title posts though #as a web zine most of these dont actually have proper collected tankobon #just the same cover art across individual chapters on e-reader
