was handed four old desktop PCs by a guy in town who asked me to look and see if there's anything worth saving on any of them before deleting any contents from them before they get thrown away - told him I might keep any that seem particularly interesting and save them from the trash pile.
Turns out two of them still use the old AT-standard power supplies - one Pentium 120 MHz, one AMD K6 266 MHz. I might just have found one or more perfect DOS/Win9x retro machines haha.
Wonder if my old Voodoo 1 still works...

here's a question I'm not sure this is the best place to talk about:
if you were going to build a set of DOS/windows machines to play ALL PC GAMES, how many would you need?
Like, the boring answer is "ONE" but that's terrible and no, not really. Yes you can run DOSBox and such on a modern computer, but there's plenty of games in the hard-to-emulate era where they just won't run on a modern computer without a lot of patching and hacks and even then, maybe not.
So a slightly less boring answer is "TWO": One for the Hard To Emulate Era and one for NOW-GAMES. So like a 600mhz Pentium III with a Voodoo 3 and Windows 98, and a Modern Boring Machine. You play nearly everything on the modern one, including DOS games (using DOSBox and similar), but games that fit in the hard-to-emulate era, you play on the Old Machine.
BUT if you want to have a set of computers for most of the eras of PC gaming, you need more than that. Like if you were populating a museum of PC games. How many? I'm gonna say... FIVE. Maybe SIX.
An IBM XT. This is the best system for the earliest era of PC games: booters, early DOS games, anything without speed control (yes, there are turbo buttons, but they can only do so much). This is like an 8mhz with a 20mb hard drive, 640kb of ram, PC speaker only. You definitely need a joystick.
High-end 486/Pentium. This will play the rest of DOS games and nearly all Windows 3.1 games. 16mb of RAM is more than enough. A hard drive of about ~500mb (one of the first size limits), a soundblaster and maybe a GUS or MIDI device. You'll need a CD-ROM drive, for sure, even though most games won't need it.
Pentium II/III, or an AMD K6: Most early Windows games from the windows 9x era. You'll need a PCI sound card and a 3DFX card, probably a Voodoo 3 or above. You could go with an early nvidia like a geforce 2/3, but then you don't get GLIDE games. Something like 128mb of RAM, a couple gigs of hard drive, nearly all games will be CD-ROM so you want something FAST, and probably an old copy of Daemon Tools/CloneCD and a pile of no-CD cracks, because that will be NOISY.
Late single-core era: Pentium 4 or AMD Athlon 64. This is for the games that are relatively recent (2000s and onward) but have compatibility reasons that make them not run well on modern systems, because they don't handle multi-core systems, 64bit windows, or windowses newer than XP. So obviously this is going to run Windows XP, maybe tweaked Vista at a push, and it will 100% be the 32bit version. You're gonna have like 1-2 gigabytes of RAM, a few hundred gigabytes of hard drive space to a terabyte, and a video card like a GeForce 8-series or a Radeon HD 3000.
Boring modern machine. Fastest CPU/GPU, most RAM, biggest HD, etc that you can afford. Run Windows 10 or 11, it doesn't matter.
And the only reason I say "five or six" is because you might want to stuff another computer in, call it PC 3.5: Basically a fast Win9x machine, but this one uses an nvidia/ATI GPU instead of a 3DFX GPU. This'll be a machine for high-end Win9x/ME games that need more graphics power than a 3DFX card can manage, but don't work on an XP machine. I don't know for certain there are games in that area, but I wouldn't at all be surprised.

The Cobalt Qube was a computer server appliance product line, meant to be web servers, developed by Cobalt Networks, Inc. (later purchased by Sun Microsystems) from 1998 to 2002 featuring a modified Red Hat Linux operating system and a proprietary GUI for server management. The original Qube systems were equipped with RM5230 or RM5231 microprocessors but later models used AMD K6-2 chips. NetBSD operating system has been ported to both the Cobalt Qube and RaQ.
The Qube 2700 was the first product released by Cobalt Networks in 1998.[2] Mark Orr, one of the Cobalt Networks' CEOs, came up with the cobalt color. The green LED in the front was Bill Scott's idea. The 2700 was not a development version number but came from the atomic number of cobalt, 27. The Qube 2700 used the RM5230 microprocessor.
The next product was called the Qube 2800 before being sold. But, released in 2000, was eventually called the Qube 2, leaving the 2800 to designate the system type. The Qube 2 used the RM5231 microprocessor.
Under an OEM arrangement, the Qube 2 units were also produced by Gateway in the form of the Gateway Micro Server. The casing featured on these units was black instead of cobalt blue.
The Qube 3, released in 2002, used an AMD K6-2 CPU at either 300 MHz or 450 MHz and was the last product in the Qube line.
A fourth Qube model was in development but was never released.[3] However, several models were released in the data center-friendly Cobalt RaQ product line after the Cobalt Qube was discontinued.

With its impressive specifications packed into a compact form factor, this mini PC offers gamers a high-performance experience without compromising on space. In this blog post, we'll dive into the key features, performance benchmarks, and overall value of the GMKtec K6 to help you determine if it's the right choice for your gaming setup.
Design and Build Quality The GMKtec K6 is a testament to modern engineering, proving that you don’t need a bulky tower to achieve top-tier performance. Measuring just a few inches in each dimension, this mini PC can easily fit into any gaming setup, whether you’re working with a small desk or looking to declutter your space. Its sleek, minimalist design features a matte black finish with subtle branding, ensuring it complements any gaming environment.
Despite its compact size, the K6 is built to be robust and durable. The use of high-quality materials ensures that it can withstand the rigors of daily use, while the efficient cooling system prevents overheating, even during intense gaming sessions. The internal layout is well-organized, with ample ventilation to keep the components cool and running smoothly.
Performance Powerhouse At the heart of the GMKtec K6 is the AMD Ryzen 7 7840HS processor, a powerhouse that combines eight cores and sixteen threads to deliver exceptional performance. This CPU is designed to handle demanding tasks with ease, making it ideal for both gaming and productivity applications. Whether you’re engaging in high-frame-rate gaming or multitasking with multiple applications, the Ryzen 7 7840HS provides the raw power needed to keep everything running seamlessly.
Paired with the Ryzen 7 7840HS are 16GB or 32GB of DDR5 RAM, which offers lightning-fast memory speeds and improved efficiency over previous generations. This ensures that your system can handle even the most memory-intensive games and applications without experiencing slowdowns or stuttering. The inclusion of DDR5 RAM also means that the K6 is future-proofed for upcoming software and game releases that may demand more memory bandwidth.
Storage Solutions The GMKtec K6 offers flexible storage options, with configurations featuring either a 512GB or 1TB SSD. Solid-state drives (SSDs) provide significant advantages over traditional hard drives, including faster load times, quicker boot-ups, and overall improved system responsiveness. This means you can expect rapid game launches and swift data access, enhancing your overall gaming experience.
Moreover, the K6’s storage is upgradeable, allowing you to expand your storage capacity as needed. This is particularly useful for gamers who have large game libraries or those who work with substantial media files. The ability to upgrade ensures that your mini PC can evolve with your needs, without necessitating a complete system overhaul.
Graphics and Gaming Experience When it comes to gaming, the GMKtec K6 does not disappoint. The AMD Ryzen 7 7840HS includes integrated graphics, which are capable of handling many modern games at respectable settings. However, for those who demand even higher levels of performance, the K6 supports discrete GPU options. This means you can install a dedicated graphics card to push your gaming experience to the next level, allowing for ultra settings and higher resolutions.
Whether you’re a casual gamer or a competitive esports enthusiast, the K6’s graphics capabilities ensure smooth gameplay with minimal lag. The mini PC supports high-refresh-rate monitors and can deliver crisp visuals and fluid animations, enhancing your overall gaming immersion.
Connectivity and Expansion Despite its compact size, the GMKtec K6 offers a range of connectivity options to ensure you stay connected and expand your setup as needed. The mini PC includes multiple USB ports, including USB 3.2 and USB-C, allowing for fast data transfer and connection of various peripherals. It also features HDMI and DisplayPort outputs, making it easy to connect to multiple monitors or high-resolution displays.
For network connectivity, the K6 includes both Ethernet and Wi-Fi options. The wired Ethernet connection provides a stable and fast internet connection, ideal for online gaming and streaming. Meanwhile, the Wi-Fi capabilities ensure that you can stay connected without the need for additional cables, offering flexibility in your setup.
Cooling and Noise Levels One of the concerns with compact PCs is maintaining adequate cooling without generating excessive noise. The GMKtec K6 addresses this challenge with an efficient cooling system that includes strategically placed fans and heat sinks. This setup effectively dissipates heat generated by the high-performance components, ensuring stable operation even during intense gaming sessions.
The cooling system is designed to operate quietly, minimizing disruptions during gameplay or while working. This is a significant advantage for users who prefer a quiet environment or who use their mini PC in a shared space.
Value and Conclusion The GMKtec K6 AMD R7 7840HS Gaming Mini PC represents an excellent value for those seeking a powerful yet compact gaming solution. With its impressive processor, ample memory, fast storage options, and versatile connectivity, the K6 delivers high-performance gaming in a sleek and space-saving design.
Its upgradeable storage and support for discrete GPUs add to its appeal, allowing users to tailor their setup to meet their specific needs and preferences. The efficient cooling system and quiet operation further enhance its attractiveness as a reliable and unobtrusive gaming machine.
In conclusion, the GMKtec K6 AMD R7 7840HS Gaming Mini PC is a compelling choice for gamers and tech enthusiasts looking for a blend of power and compactness. Its top-tier specifications and thoughtful design make it a standout option in the mini PC market, proving that you don’t need a large tower to achieve exceptional gaming performance.
