Day 8: Carnivorous

The wildlife documented in the feywilds are strange. A ridiculous amount of megafauna and impossibly magical flora are just the base level. One things for certain-- everything there are frequent meat eaters.

so if you're a tiny brand-new child, your immune system is just the worst, and ideally you should be exposed to both a lot of people and a lot of vaccines, so that you can learn how to fight both people and illnesses, and become a person who doesn't get deathly ill the second you get sneezed on

at the very least, you should have one of those things - either people or vaccines, so that you have a fighting chance of not being a creature that people in old books might refer to as "sickly" or "of faint constitution"

the problem is if you had a parent who, due to extreme conservative ideology, worked to prevent you from being around both people and vaccines, your immune system will basically not exist until you're old enough to lie to doctors and tell them it's cool if they give you shots to hopefully extend your lifespan, but depending on how obsessive and protective your parent is about monitoring your doctor's appts, that might take a fucking while

anyway, what I've discovered (after catching hand-foot-mouth at the age of 28), is that now that I'm actually around both people and vaccines, my immune system is finally doing the thing where I'm not getting sick every month and a half! and because I'm working at a job with small children, I'm finally getting immunity to all of these illnesses I should have been immune to twenty-three years ago!

I always hear about the ecosystems that are more biodiverse than expected, like grasslands, deserts, rivers. What ecosystems are less biodiverse that most people expect? Or do all ecosystems have a lot going on?

forests!!!!! i don’t wanna shit on them lol but it’s kinda funny—you go from rainforests, which are a hotbed of biodiversity, to places like the redwood forest or northern coniferous woods which are just…. strangely silent.

in the case of northern coniferous woods (like in parts of alaska), the geology contributes to it. only certain species can survive in geologically active areas with poor soil quality—conifers (pine, spruce, larch) LOVE that shit. in the case of the redwoods and other more southern but still northern forests (loll!! think oregon coast), there’s only so many species that can survive in those poor-quality soils that are constantly wet thru the year. again, wooo conifers!!

the redwoods though are specifically interesting… dense canopy leads to fewer plant species able to grow, which means there’s less food for other animals. if you ever get the chance to visit redwood national park, be silent and listen for a bit. there’s a noticeable lack of insects and birds. all of that goes together!!

that being said—there are some studies being done on the redwood canopies. there are specific fern and moss ecosystems that ONLY grow on those trees, and due to habitat fragmentation it’s pretty hard to gather info on them. these things grow on a scale of hundreds of years, so many of them just don’t exist anymore.

also, though, on the other side of the scale—the southeast US is STAGGERINGLY biodiverse. that part of north america mirrors southeast asia, both are considered rainforests (in parts lol). interestingly, too, there are a lot of species that are very similar despite being separated by the pacific ocean.

The great hall of the Ithacan palace was quiet, the evening settling over the island like a comforting blanket. The faint flicker of torches illuminated the stone walls, casting soft shadows that danced across the space. You sat at one of the long wooden tables, your armor discarded beside you, leaving you in just your undershirt. Your shoulders slumped, and your head rested in your hands.

“You look like death warmed over.”

The familiar, smug voice made you groan before you even looked up. Antinous strolled into the hall, his usual confident swagger making him impossible to miss. He leaned casually against the table, arms crossed as he smirked down at you. “What do you want, Antinous?” you muttered, too tired to muster any real annoyance.

He raised an eyebrow. “What, no witty comeback? No snarky comment about me being a pain in the ass? You must be tired.” You shot him a halfhearted glare but didn’t respond. Instead, you slumped further into your seat, resting your forehead against the cool wood of the table.

Antinous frowned, his usual arrogance faltering. He wasn’t used to seeing you like this, so utterly defeated. After a moment of hesitation, he cleared his throat and awkwardly sat down beside you. “So, uh…tough day?” he asked, his tone uncharacteristically tentative.

You gave a small, humorless laugh. “You could say that.” Antinous drummed his fingers on the table, clearly out of his element. “Well, uh…you’re still alive, right? So, you know…that’s something.”

You lifted your head just enough to give him a flat look. “Wow. Inspirational.”

He winced. “Okay, yeah, let me try again.”

You sighed, sitting up and rubbing your temples. “Antinous, you don’t have to—”

“No, no, I’ve got this,” he interrupted, holding up a hand. “Look, you’re…uh… really strong. And brave. And stuff. I mean, you deal with all this knightly nonsense and still manage to… not completely lose your mind.”

You blinked at him, surprised. “That was… kind of nice.”

He grinned, clearly pleased with himself. “See? I can be nice.”

“Don’t get used to it,” you said, a small smile tugging at your lips despite your exhaustion.

He shrugged, and instantly reverting to his usual cocky demeanor. “You know, if you ever want to repay me, I’m always up for a drink or two.”

You laughed, shaking your head. “Of course you are.”

First Part - Simon is injured via beartrap while being hunted down. Introduces Simon, wolfhunts- a major theme in the story- and, of course, Johnny. Mentions a mysterious older man speaking with Johnny, but does not give him a name.

Second Part - Simon gets muzzled so Johnny can sleep without having to worry about being mauled or something, Simon eventually falls asleep. Johnny offers him food and Simon snaps at him to scare him off.

Third Part - more about wolfhunts and Simon getting used to warmth and comfort. Simon is force-fed some medicine despite not actually minding it, simply wanting to be difficult so Johnny doesn't think of him as sweet or docile. Johnny leaves the door open one morning while leaving with the older man, but Simon decides not to leave, much to Johnny's relief.

Fourth Part - no art attached - routines keep changing and Simon doesn't like it. Johnny starts talking with a woman who seems kind enough, but this prompts him into hiding Simon, as well as making him smell different and leave more often. Eventually, as he gets healthier, Simon decides to leave on his own, assuming Johnny will toss him out anyways, and falls asleep in his old territory, yearning for Johnny's home but deciding that it's for the best.

Fifth Part - Johnny finds Simon sulking out in the woods, having spent a while looking for him. Johnny realizes Simon isn't just a wolf, but urges him to come back, regardless. Simon reveals himself and follows, and is met with a warm home and a friend. (I also wasn't gonna mention it but after a few days of thinking about it I figure I should mention some casual nudity?? I'm not any less 16 than I was before and it wasn't added for any nefarious purposes, it's a perfectly SFW bath scene where it hardly focuses on him not having clothes on outside of just... taking a bath.... but I figure best to leave some sort of warning so it isn't out of nowhere. I think I meant to at first and forgot. It's only Simon, only because. Wolves don't exactly waltz around wearing clothing, now, do they)

Sixth Part - eventually

A better summary of the whole story:

Simon is a werewolf; he comes from a long line of them, in his very blood, but has been seen as a pest by the local town since he was just a pup. When he was younger he'd whine and beg outside of homes so children would feed him thinking of him as a harmless dog, until eventually on an especially instinct-driven night he broke into a chicken coop and was caught. With his shifted form being incredibly recognizable, wolfhunts are regular for him, and the townsfolk know exactly who he is. When he gets caught in a bear trap on one of these hunts, a human finds him, but seems to take pity on him, instead, and drags him back home to help him, instead. From there, Simon adjusts to living within a warm, comfortable home, where meals are offered to him and not earned with teeth and claws, where he's offered medicine and bandages and not made to clean wounds with his tongue and wait out the injury, all while telling himself that he can't get attached. (Spoiler: he does.)

It started out as an art thing because I am a sucker for turning characters into animals (on top of it being what I've drawn for my entire life, I'm talking since I was like 3 here, it's a really good way for me to understand characters in my own little way) and then turned into a way to drag myself back into writing again and get over my anxiety about posting silly things I like because screw it dude I'm happy with this. Who cares. It's the internet. People do worse.

It does not only revolve around Ghost while shifted, and will 100% have him as a human, and will not always have art to accompany it. I told myself it would but let's be honest here art is hard sometimes and I care a lot more about the writing tbh.

WereGhost is entirely SFW (I'm 16 ofc it is) but the end goal is SoapGhost/Ghoap/whatever your preferred name for them is, and there is lots of violence I will not lie. It's a werewolf story taking place in the undecided time period past where the very first part (with writing) involves him getting bear trapped because he's being hunted, that was kind of a given from the start.

Personal detail under the cut, it's nothing super serious just a little explanation for later on, but I figure since it's just about my life I'd hitcha with a Keep Reading.

No set schedule ADHD would kill me if I tried, updates will slow down around January as I'm applying for a job then. Still, I love this thing, it won't die out it'll just happen less. Once I do get a job I'll ideally be awake around 10-2PM and should be at work at 4 (all just vague estimates, it's bound to change but that's the plan), so that means I'll have from when I get home to however long I'm awake after, the few hours I have before work, plus days off (which will likely be spent with family more than anything) to try and get stuff out. Also meaning not guaranteed haha, but I will try simply for these two, and because woah I'm writing again.

ok here’s my hammer tier list. my thoughts under the read more

ball peen: s tier. funny name. made me laugh really hard. what more do you need. ok actual description its used for metal working in the peening (hehe) process (surface hardening through impact). its got a rounded head on one side and the other side has a flat side thats sometimes used for chiseling or striking punches (making a hole through a hard thing). but it is in s tier bc of the name.

___ hammer or as i dub it maraca hammer: s tier. maraca hammer. not all of them have the loose steel shot inside tho some are just made of a different material (rubber or durable plastic) that helps like. dampen the force of a hit so it doesn’t bounce back as much. its good for working in tight spaces + preventing accidental damage. would be a tier but the fact theres the maraca version with the beads inside (that serve the purpose of like spreading out the energy of the force of the hit) that you can hear gives it s tier to me

framing hammer: b tier. fine hammer. a type of claw hammer its got like a little bumpy grid on the head that helps it keep a grip while its hitting but it also leaves a mark on the wood it hits. the woods is usually a part of the frame of the structure (as said in the name)and theres a different type (a finishing hammer) to make wood that goes on the outside look nicer so it doesn’t really matter. gets the job done solid hammer

claw hammer: a tier. like the most basic hammer. the kind of hammer you think of when you think of a hammer (unless you think of a mallet). used for wood working mostly bc its not suited for metal stuff, but its got other general uses. a classic. where would we be without you claw hammer

( ‼️ animal death mention ‼️) cow hammer: e tier. can’t find a picture. used for animal slaughter. fallen out of use bc of animal welfare objections. probably kind of cruel way to do that. also just seems really inefficient. makes me sad.

drilling hammer/lump hammer: b tier. a smaller kind of sledgehammer. more light weight with a smaller handle. useful in light demolition work or like cutting stuff with a chisel. also used in scouts stuff!! for like tent stakes and similar things.

gavel: s tier. i think we all know what a gavel is. judges use in it court its the little hammer they bang for stuff. s tier bc i’d have a lot of fun with it if i had it

geologist’s hammer: a tier. its in the name, geologists used it to open up specimens and shit.finds pretty rocks so thats why its a tier. wooo

warrington hammer: s tier. its a kind of cross peen hammer. giggling. fun name unlike the ball peen tho its used for wood working. thin side sets a nail flat side drives it in. can be used for other stuff like fixing a bent nail. more precise than a claw hammer

mallet: b tier. rubber roundish head. bunch of different kinds. didn’t feel like reading every single time since i’m already doing that for the hammers so. b tier

rock climbing hammer: a tier. the wiki page for this is very barren but not much explanation needed i think. its for rock climbing, specifically aid climbing, for putting in and taking out pitons and the like. useful for Not Falling and Dying. but also it looks like a plague doctor mask and its silly and i like it

sledgehammer: a tier. BIG HAMMER!!! also distributes force over a bigger area. but BIG HAMMER!!!!

soft faced hammer: b tier. like dead hammer its for not causing as much damage as normal hammers. but no maraca. no fun colors like it either.

spiking hammer/spiking maul: b tier. used for striking nails into the railroads. cool! idk i dont have a lot of feelings on it and i dont know how much more i can fit in a tier lmao

splitting maul: c tier. more of an ax than a hammer tbh. used for splitting wood.

stone mason’s hammer: b tier. one side has a little thinish part part and the other part is flat. can be used to cut bricks and stones and stuff and chisel without an actual chisel. also used by geologists!

upholstery hammer: b tier. its in the name. used for upholstery. often has a magnetic side for picking up tacks. has kinda been replaced by the staple gun though

hammer drill: c tier. more of a drill but behaves enough like a hammer for me to allow it i guess. im less interested in the mechanically powered ones ngl

jackhammer: a tier. very cool actually. combines a hammer and a chisel. not fun if its nearby bc its loud and annoying but cool if i’m just passing by. used to break up rock and concret and shit. brrrrrrrrrrrr

steam hammer: a tier. now that is a solid mechanical hammer i think. actually hammery. used for shaping forgings and driving piles.

trip hammer: S TIER. I LIED THIS ONE IS A GOOD MECHANICAL HAMMER. variety of uses like for processing grain in agriculture crushing metal ores in mining and in forges formaking iron into workable iron bars. old as fuck too. unfortunately replaced by the power hammer. 

power hammer: a tier. extremely similar to the steam hammer. replaced the trip hammer which makes me sad. but its still cool

you stare at the hot glowing embers from the fireplace, admiring it almost. you didn't notice that you're zoning out, everything just felt so slow.

you can hear the sounds of the fire, the noise of the wood crackling, you can smell the pumpkin scented candles burning from across the room, but yet you don't feel anything at all.

you notice the small blue flames, comparing it to the tall orange flames, you notice the small details of the fire place. was that painting always there? is that stack of books new? what time is it? is tomorrow monday or wednesday?

"hey, you okay there, love?" fred asks, snapping you back to reality.

you jump slightly, nodding. "mhm."

"are you sure? you seem like you have a lot in your mind." he added, "you can tell me, whatever it is. i would listen to your pretty voice anyday." he stated, smirking.

you smiled at his effort at flirting, he's good at it though, you admit. but that smile quickly faded away as you remembered what you had to face tomorrow.

you hesitated, "well, there is something that i am dreading tomorrow." but you gave in, it was fred after all. "theres this herbology thing. i have to presentate something that i've been working on for the past weeks," he listened to every word you were saying.

"i think it's pretty okay, but i'm not sure about presentating it, you know? what if i drop the pot by accident, or mess up my words? i don't want to mess up my words again, fred." you sigh.

"i don't think you will." he shook his head — "but i might. i tried practicing it but it just felt so awkward. my voice is always too quiet, my body language is off, and i always start getting nervous when i'm half-way speaking." you ramble.

"i just don't wanna mess up my speaking again, fred. i really want a good score for my speaking. professor sprout told me to speak up more during lessons but i just-" you hands cover your face, giving up on whatever you were about to say.
