A Jily Fic Coming Oct. 2024 - Rated M - Subscribe for Notification
Lily and James Potters’ love was fiery, filled with passion, tragedy, and love. It was not a fast ignition of a flame that proceeded to burn bright. No, it was a flame that was lit on the Hogwarts Express before anyone had joined the compartment. It burned brighter as their years progressed, and it was lit ablaze in their seventh year. It burned vividly until the day they died. Their love was described by many as a light that shined during the darkest parts of the war. This is their story.
With the warm reception I received after posting Mistle-Wow, I have decided to start posting my long Jily fic earlier than expected.
This is a long fic, canon-compliant, and centered around Jily.
The first chapter will detail James Potter's early years before Hogwarts. The next chapters will be for Sirius, Remus, Peter, Severus, and Lily. After that, we will get into the first ride of the Hogwarts Express, and continue on until Jily's death.
When I say long, I do mean it. I have plans for almost every month of their life once they start Hogwarts. Which means we are looking at over 120 chapters.
I plan on updating once a month at first, however, I aim to move into more frequent updates after the new year.
I hope you are excited, the first chapter is ~15k words.

Had a really bad day today so I decided to play through the entirety of A Light In The Shadows again. Including both level packs. Sometimes you just need to avoid the color orange as a really really really sad glowing cat.

I was figuring out how many students I wanted to have in James Potter's year, and I made these graphs.
In ALITS, I made it so the 1918 flu strain was so bad that pepper-up potion was not enough (which would also track with how the pandemic went for Muggles). Mel suggested a Dragon Pox outbreak - pick your pandemic, really.
We know JKR has said something about 1000 students being at Hogwarts, and if in the early 1900s there were ~110 students per year, that would track. For Harry's year, we know there were 40, but that was also births at the end of the war - knowing that birthrates decrease with war, I put this roughly together and got an estimated class size of ~70 for James Potter's class.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Blood Purity and a Declining Birth Rate
Voldemort’s promise to restore pureblood supremacy isn’t just a call to arms; it’s a lifeline for a community terrified of its own obsolescence.
The wizarding world is haunted by more than just literal ghosts; it is a world that seems to be shrinking, its former grandeur fading into memory. Signs of decline are everywhere: Hogwarts, once a bustling center of magical education, has unused classrooms and seemingly fewer students than one would expect for the only magical school in Great Britain and Ireland. Diagon Alley, supposedly the heart of the magical community in one of the world’s largest cities, consists of just a few streets. Even wizarding media is centralized in a single newspaper.
These clues suggest a world that was once much larger than it is now. There are references to better days and implications that Hogwarts isn’t what it used to be now that Dumbledore is in charge. This decline is tied closely to the waning influence of pureblood families, who are becoming a smaller and smaller fraction of the wizarding population. Muggle-born and half-blood students outnumber them at Hogwarts, a shift that threatens the social and political dominance Purebloods have held for centuries.
What’s particularly interesting is how purebloods respond—or fail to respond—to their declining numbers. Unlike other extremist groups like Christian fundamentalists or white nationalists, who often promote large families as a "sacred duty" to maintain their cultural dominance (Hitler gave medals to women who had five or more children), pureblood families in Harry Potter are remarkably small. This lack of larger pureblood families raises questions about their long-term strategies for survival. If blood purity is their highest priority, why don’t purebloods prioritize reproduction as a means to preserve their numbers?
Draco Malfoy, the prime school-age pureblood antagonist of the main character,  is an only child. Sirius Black and Regulus Black come from an ancient family with an extensive family tree, yet they have no siblings beyond each other and only three cousins. Bellatrix Lestrange, one of the most fanatical proponents of blood purity, didn’t have children until her late 40s—and even then, it is a single child (and only if you accept Cursed Child as canon).
Harry Potter himself comes from a pureblood family, but his only living relatives are his Muggle aunt and cousin. Neville Longbottom is raised by his grandmother, and while he mentions elderly relatives, there’s no indication of cousins his own age. Even the Weasleys, the exception to the rule with their seven children, seem to lack extended family—there are no Weasley cousins attending Hogwarts during Harry’s time.
The First Wizarding War can partially explain the small size of Harry’s generation: people were afraid to have children during Voldemort’s rise to power, and the violence of that decade wiped out much of a generation. However, this alone doesn’t account for the decline. Something must have happened in the previous generation as well. For several generations now, pureblood families haven’t been having enough children to maintain their population.
Another explanation could be that their intense focus on lineage and prestige means they are selective about marriage and procreation, limiting family size to maintain "purity" rather than expanding it. Marrying within a shrinking pool of acceptable partners likely leads to fewer unions and, consequently, fewer children. Additionally, inter-family rivalries, societal pressures, and a rigid class system may discourage collaboration between pureblood families to ensure survival.
While we see pureblood families of different economic status in the series it is also worth noting that smaller families may be a deliberate choice to consolidate wealth and maintain power within a single branch of the family, ensuring that resources aren’t dispersed among too many inheritors. By keeping family sizes small, they can preserve their status and influence in a society where lineage and financial stability are critical markers of power.
Alternatively, external factors not mentioned in canon could help explain the dwindling pureblood numbers. Perhaps a catastrophic outbreak of dragon pox ravaged Britain at the turn of the century, disproportionately affecting pureblood families due to their insular communities and close intermarriages. An economic crisis could also have made it difficult for even wealthy families to support large households, especially given the high costs of maintaining pureblood status and reputation. Such events would compound the social and cultural pressures already discouraging large families, contributing to a steady decline in pureblood populations.
The decline in a pureblood population creates a simmering panic among purebloods. They perceive that their traditions and way of life are changing, and instead of adapting to demographic shifts and embracing a more inclusive future, they cling to fear and resentment. They blame Muggle-borns for their loss of power, projecting their anxieties onto those they perceive as outsiders for “stealing” magic.
When those in positions of power feel their dominance slipping, they often construct narratives in which the oppressed will rise up and do to them what they, the ruling class, have done to others. This paranoia leads purebloods to double down on their exclusivity, believing that maintaining their power is the only way to avoid losing everything. Their refusal to adapt blinds them to the potential benefits of inclusivity: a larger magical community, a stronger economy with more people working wizarding jobs and purchasing wizarding goods, and a broader cultural foundation to sustain their traditions.
This fear and resistance to change create fertile ground for Voldemort’s rise. He exploits the purebloods’ anxieties, offering them a roadmap for radicalization. Instead of addressing the root causes of their decline, purebloods embrace the Dark Lord’s extreme methods, leading to catastrophic consequences.
The determination to "purify" the wizarding world and maintain their position of power ironically accelerates their downfall. As Death Eaters enact Voldemort’s vision, their crusade doesn’t simply target individual Muggle-borns but entire families—wiping out, or nearly wiping out, powerful, established wizarding lineages like the Bones, McKinnons, Longbottoms, and Potters. This destructive cycle ensures that even the pureblood families themselves suffer massive losses, further accelerating the population decline they sought to prevent.
Purebloods who embrace the politics of purity in an attempt to stave off extinction ultimately hasten their own downfall, prioritizing exclusivity and radicalization over growth and adaptation.

The Chaperone by @annabtg
It's a double fic rec because Chapter 6 of ALITS is about Lily Evans and she deserves all the love.
There is so much fun to be had with the '70s and Jily. I personally headcanon that Lily Evans grew up in a more reserved family. Her parents would not be happy with her going off and spending time with a boy - especially one who would have a mischievous grin like James.
This fic brings me such joy, and I know I already rec'd it but you must read it if you have not. If you have, then I shall recommend another '70s vibe one and that is... let's say groovy.

First off, I love this.
And I really think the point of "I imagine there was a real danger in who he dated." is not talked about a lot, but it rings so true to me with how Sirius was placed in society.
I played with this idea in my fic:
“Ever wonder why they went after Mudblood Mary so soon after your date Black?” Snape smiled cruelly, “They didn’t want another pureblood to sully the family tree. It’s all your fault they went after her. Bet you didn’t know that Black.” - Mistle-Wow, 5th year sneak peak for ALITS.
Sirius was set to be the next leader of the Black family. That is the role he was born into. What I related this to is how everyone was obsessed with who Prince William dated. People in 'high society' judged people for who they married. And the Blacks were at the top of high society - they would have monitored their sons' dating behavior. I'm sure there was some attitude about "let boys have fun," but even that would have limits.
It's also possible that Sirius' parents had picked someone for him to marry. I think the options for Purebloods were thinning when Sirius was born and could have wanted to make sure they could "secure the family line."
I think there is a lot of interesting dynamics that you can play with, if you consider that one point that Artemisia made.
Sorry if you've answered this before (im sure you have) but do you think Sirius was a serial dater at school? How do you hc Sirius at school?
I think my over exposure (early in my fandom life) to school shagger/ sex pest Sirius made me really dislike the trope that he dated loads. But also in my analysis of his character, he’s pretty selective about who he spends time with. He’s way more polite than he’s often depicted as, but he also doesn’t suffer fools lightly- so I can’t see him tolerating dating people for the sake of it. I can see him going out on a few dates (with people who he deems clever or interesting) but his friendships would’ve always taken priority over any kind of romantic life.
I do think he was probably widely fancied, but given that Bellatrix literally tries to “trim the family tree” when Tonks marries Remus, I imagine there was a real danger in who he dated. He was related to active Death Eaters, and I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that if he publicly got involved with the wrong person in their eyes, they’d consider an honour killing (for want of a better term) and that would probably make him even more reluctant to date seriously.
At school, I think overall, he was just one of those people who’s effortlessly good at everything, and I do wonder how much jealousy that stirred. Because when someone is that good-looking, people tend to react in one of two extreme ways, either they’re deferential to the point of fawning, or they absolutely hate you. You become an object of projection (Good looks can be as much of a curse as they are a gift).
If you actually asked people for personal stories about going to school with him, most wouldn’t have much beyond, distant politeness or “oh yeah, I saw him break someones nose once.” Because I do think he got into fights. He’s a very physical fighter even in the Ministry battle (literally shoulder slams Dolohov) so I can absolutely see him getting into fist fights especially around the time he leaves his family. And on top of all that, I really don’t see him enjoying being part of the school rumour mill
I know Remus calls him and James “the height of cool,” but these are the same people who had stupid nicknames for each other and spent years as amateur cartographers. Sirius was thought of as cool because he was hot ( I said what I said) because this is a guy who remixed A Christmas Carol and willingly called himself Snuffles, he absolutely had a ridiculous side, we just don’t get to see it because by the time we meet him, he’s been so prison-hardened.
Also he clearly cared about his grades. He expected at least an Outstanding (which is the top grade- was he expecting them to make a new one for him?) and the fact that McGonagall still calls him brilliant when she thinks he’s a mass murderer says a lot. She has no time for people who slack off, so he must have been a good student. I don’t think he was a class clown or a class disrupter-he would never perform for people.

*whacking gavel on desk* we need to talk more about luffy BLUSHING at the glint of green in the distance hundreds of feet away and realizing after so long (three weeks) he’s finally reunited with his swordsman. bc huh!?? he did not need to blush to convey how excited he was to see zoro, but it was a conscious decision to draw in the manga & anime that luffy BLUSHED at the sight of him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(and then he flung himself into zoro’s arms clutching on to him saying it’s been forever while zoro smiled bright and wide bc suddenly they were just two dumb kids from the east blue with a dingy and a dream again)

Oh... Blushes... you are too kind...
It very much is friendship and Jily focused. I am actually really excited about the relationship (platonic friendship) I have planned for James and Remus.
It's quite obvious from the books that Sirius and James were best friends, their friendship was loud and colorful.
James and Remus had a very tight relationship and I always pictured them finding quietness together. Not necessarily, quietness literally, but more of James' softer side. Sirius is fire, Remus is water, Peter is earth - and James is the air that they all breathe. Air and water are both liquids that are very different but complement each other.
They both come from loving families but have very different upbringings. But that commonality gives them something special. It's late-night convos about defense or care of magical creatures. Or another time when James' knows he messed up, but Remus just sits there, not telling him off, but James knows that Remus wants to say something. Remus sits there in support and lets James talk it out. It's James getting that Remus is not well, but not letting him be unwell alone.
It's a very subtle, but powerful, friendship. Neither of them needs to be loud to be heard.
Remus and James’ friendship is so important to me.
The moon and the sun.
So far away but connected by the stars.
I feel like they just understand eachother
