Saints don’t “accept” power lmao, if anything by your metrics hozier is the saint (sacrificing, selfless, submissive, reverent) and she’s the sinner (self aggrandising, avaricious, lustful, wrathful in some songs etc). I love Megan a lot and have listened to her way more than hozier but this is such a reach lol it has nothing to do with her being a confident black woman saint whatever but is because she raps, which is less respected than alt indie pop. there are some racist reasons for this but is also just cause we get exposed to way more bad rap in pop culture than bad alt indie pop, and the imagery in rap tends to be way more offensive to most people than hoziers lil woodland world (ie guns, drugs, crime, strippers etc).

(Also girls love to imagine being the girl in hoziers songs cause she’s just whatever u want it to be, whereas when I sing along to bodyodyodyodyody “big titties lil waist big titties lil waist” even though it’s a fun song I do occasionally feel bad cause I have neither of those lol. for mavis, nothing ever came easy and nothing ever came cheap. she was a fighter - a wolf among lions - who fought till her lungs gave way and until her claws bled. she cowered in the shadow of her four siblings - them the sun and she the moon. they were opponents - they were the prodigies and she the normal. she grew to compete, to be green with envy, to strive to be her own and to be a woman of rebellion. she bound herself to the ways of the wicked and strayed from the path she had chosen for her. instead, she went her own way and made her own destiny. outsiders agreed that it wasn’t all that agreeable, but to mavis it was as agreeable as it fucking got - nothing more, nothing less. a few run in’s with the law, an alcoholic demon and a stint as a stripper and roller derby bombshell were “hardships” she faced, which only led to her freedom. on the edge of eighteen, she fled…leaving it all behind her in hopes of regaining a bit of self-worth back into her life. she forgave and forgot those who wronged her - her siblings being one of them. in her heart, mavis knew her siblings had done nothing wrong to her, yet she couldn’t shake the feeling of hate she harbored towards them. as far as the ‘other’s’ go, she couldn’t care less what they had done to her - all she wanted was to forget her childhood…the black abyss among the white. from a very young age, mavis read whatever books she could get her tiny hold on. growing up distant with her loved ones, she sought an escape and found it in literature. mavis liked modern literature, but it just seemed to miss something that the old masters had in spades. it was that style that had substance and that insight into human nature that she wanted to immolate. she wanted to immolate human qualities and abilities to which she had no experience with. there was no style of writing that she loved more than those that were poetic. while the classics filled her shelves, books of poems were stacked on her floor and her favorites were always hidden under her pillow as if by sleeping with them they may whisper into her sleep and pierce her dreams. for all she knew, they worked; her dreams were always poetic. poetry gave mavis insight into the human mind and soul set that other genres couldn’t satisfy. her love for reading was inherited by her father, although they we never close mavis’s best memories originate from her father.

as a child, mavis wasn’t like everyone else. while the children played outside she was inside reading or perfecting her strings on her violin. mavis was a simple child with a bright and imaginative mind. ever since she was young, mavis knew exactly what she wanted to do. she was a bird, ready for her wings to expand and explore the world on her own. everything was perfect, she was happy, until it wasn’t. one of the most traumatic moments in mavis’s life was when she walked in on her parent’s murder. someone had shot through the window, killing the couple. she remembers her tiny body trembling as she walked to the scene. how the blood painted the wooden floors and dripped underneath the floorboards. the blood trailing underneath her pale feet. and then her brother came running, he grabbed mavis and held her tight to his body. she remembers him screaming at his other siblings. once everything was calm, mavis’s brother sat her in the bathroom washing the blood away from her feet. she remembers his hands scrubbing away the dried blood from her feet and hands. from that day forward, mavis was not the same girl any longer. the once strong hearted girl was left hollow, empty and her passion for the things she loved soon faded away. her siblings treated her differently, like a fragile heirloom that could be broken with even the slightest of nudge. mavis left her family in boston, massachusetts and moved to new york. mavis believed her life finally had that meaning she’d been searching for. no longer was she the outcast, she was a strong intelligent woman. her image, the person she loved - the rebel, the killer queen she once was - was forever gone…and a regular marie antoinette was underneath her skin; she had her cake and ate it to. luxurious in speech, mannerisms and wardrobe she was, but underneath the glass exterior was the cigarette and booze drinking girl.

experiencing her fair share of hardships along the way didn’t ease when she lived on her own. income was sparse and she refused to ask her siblings for help. she put herself through school, providing her future with a proper education and credentials to go along with it. it was alien for mavis to return to such normalcy but she knew she was headed to a path of greatness by making her wrong’s rights. deciding on what to become wasn’t difficult for her to determine, she always had a passion for criminology and investigation. it was only natural for her to become a fbi agent. justice wasn’t the only motive for mavis to become an agent, it was her constant need to help other people overcome even the slightest of hardship. it seemed to become a very important task in mavis’s life. given that she never had a voice guide her out of even the darkest of paths. she refused for another girl to suffer through the same perils and hardships she did.

L I F E   D U R I N G   T H E   O U T B R E A K:

she married during this time to a man she wasn’t sure she loved entirely. it seemed like the perfect time to get married  — that was her only motive to say “i do” to a man who treated her worse than the dirt underneath her shoe. her self-confidence hadn’t healed entirely upon meeting her husband and he had taken advantage of the pretty girl with a broken heart. she allowed for such abuse to consume her, blaming it on her actions knowing she could never be the perfect wife. restless nights and living in a constant state of fear was something that needed to change, mavis knew that — especially with a child on the way. she began to fear for the life of her child rather than her own and before she could do anything about it another lash hit from her husband caused her to tumble to the floor — resulting in a miscarriage that scarred her for many years to come.

mavis earned the courage to divorce him, wanting nothing from him but an apology. the divorce long — nasty, just she expected it to be. but before those papers were signed and mavis would return to some state of happiness a shock flooded the world. causing not only her fate to change but the entire world too. when the virus spread, she was unable to get in contact with her workplace for whatever reason. she found safety in a local grade school. the children who had no home were her main priority, knowing that they’d all become orphans — she took it upon herself to ensure the safety of them and most of all compassion. but mavis learned that saving everyone wasn’t an easy task, it was next to impossible to ensure the safety of every single child —– unfortunately she learned this hard way.  only she rose from the ashes to endure the hellish world that now consumed her home. oddly enough it was easy for her to adapt in a world such as this one. familiarizing herself with guns and weaponry took time but it soon became a second nature for her. almost a reflex to reach for her dagger and press it into the skull of a unfortunate soul.  she lived alone only finding small communities when she needed them, gathering her supplies before escaping — never running into the same person twice. all until she found a permanent location in cheyenne, wyoming that she would strangely consider her new home.

L I F E   A F T E R   T H E   O U T B R E A K:

recruiting herself into the tribe of raiders seemed out of character for her to adapt to but soon enough she indulged knowing survival was at stake. with time she only became stronger, her skills increased, and though her heart was still warm she built a barrier around it — careful to whoever might touch it. however, the relationship mavis shares with the raiders is slowly dwindling as she finds out about their sinister motives. though her hands are not the cleanliest, she’s hoping to redeem herself in whatever ways she can.
