One Last Away Message
By Michael Albers, VP of Communications Product at Oath
If you were a 90’s kid, chances are there was a point in time when AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) was a huge part of your life. You likely remember the CD, your first screenname, your carefully curated away messages, and how you organized your buddy lists. Right now you might be reminiscing about how you had to compete for time on the home computer in order to chat with friends outside of school. You might also remember how characters throughout pop culture from “You’ve Got Mail” to “Sex and the City” used AIM to help navigate their relationships. In the late 1990’s, the world had never seen anything like it. And it captivated all of us.
AIM tapped into new digital technologies and ignited a cultural shift, but the way in which we communicate with each other has profoundly changed. As a result we’ve made the decision that we will be discontinuing AIM effective December 15, 2017. We are more excited than ever to continue building the next generation of iconic brands and life-changing products for users around the world.
Thank you to all of our AIM users. And definitely stay tuned as we’re fired up to provide more products and experiences that people around the world love.

AIM to be taken out back and shot
AIM, Aol's instant messaging service, is to shut down December 15 after 20 years of operation. Once a near-universal form of communication for a certain generation of internet users--even those who wouldn't be caught dead paying for Aol's internet service!--AIM slowly faded in the age of Google and Slack and ultimately died of corporate abuse and neglect. They are, however, collecting "Aimemories" to remember the good times by.

TTYL, AIM. LYLAS.
Well, it’s the end of an era. Our childhood is dying and we are all dinosaurs. Last week, the folks at AOL announced that its trailblazing program, Instant Messenger, would be shutting down for good in December. https://twitter.com/aim/status/916290747850264577 Like many millennials, I haven’t used AIM in years, but it was such an integral part to our lives when the internet was just becoming a…

BRB Forever: TC Writers Discuss Their Favorite Memories Of AIM Before It Disappears Because 2017 Is The Worst
Twitter / @aim
What ’90s child didn’t spend hours after school typing away at AOL Instant Messenger on their parents’ computer? I, for one, lived for the awful dial tone that let me know the Internet was officially firing up, and when the “door open” sound blared from my speakers as I entered a chat room, I felt a thrill.
Well, you can kiss all those memories goodbye because AIM is officially on death row and there’s nothing you can do about it.

Honestly, a lot of us are devastated despite not logging into our accounts for a good decade now (wow I’m old), and can you blame us? AIM was the building block of our entire social experience in the ’00s. If you didn’t flirt with your crush over the original DM, did you even a crush?

So to commemorate such a beautiful, bizarre time in our lives, we asked our writers about their usernames, their away messages, and their fondest AIM memories, because why not? Let us GRIEVE.
Chrissy Stockton
“My sn was like xxlucky13x and my away messages were sugarcult lyrics. I used it to talk to boys I was too shy to talk to at school. Like they would walk by me and I wouldn’t say anything to them but I would talk to them on AIM later that night. I would also print out the chats and put them in my diary.”
Molly Burford
“Mine was wildchild92m and my away messages usually had some cryptic death cab lyrics and and lol bored txt it (high school was a dark time)”
Kendra Syrdal
“my sn changed a bunch but i’m pretty sure at one point it was kendrahatescake. i used it almost exclusively to talk to my various boyfriends and my friends about said various boyfriends, there were always lyrics in my away message (avril, augustana, death cab, my chemical romance, panic! to name a few) and there was constant arguing in the syrdal household because i would try to log on while my mom was on the phone giving her the dreaded dial-up sound right in her ear.”
Callie Byrnes
“My sn was tenleafclover (I was a child okay) and my away message was whatever emo, moody-ass song I was obsessed with at that point in time (does anyone still remember “Ohio Is For Lovers”???). Tbh I mostly just used aim to further my social justice causes by starting fights with classmates about LGBTQ rights and feminism, even though I was a quiet, gentle dove who never spoke to anyone irl.”
Marisa Donnelly
“xoxosmilesbabyxoxo. Used to message my crushes, leave subtle (but totally obvious) away messages to exes, and to make cool profiles with lots of colors.”
Katie Mather
“Mine was something with my initials because my very fun (strict) catholic school told us that men were going to come find us and kill us if our screen names were clearly girl names (?????) and that scared the shit out of me and my away messages were ALWAYS “at [insert mundane activity here] call/txt :’)))))))” because I didn’t listen to cool enough music to put any lyrics”
They say breaking up is hard to do, but nothing is harder than breaking up with the fondest parts of our youth. Before we send away our beloved messenger forever, here are some last words about how AIM truly changed our lives:
Chrissy: “I almost never became friends with my best friend bc she asked for my sn in college and it was “chrizzlecouture” and she thought (rightfully) I was a basic bitch and it weirded her out.”
Kendra: “i used a lot of ~* in my away messages and it clearly made an impact to this day”
Katie: “that feeling in ur heart when ur crush signed on and the door opening sound blasted through ur computer speakers ~ * ~”
You will be dearly missed. Brb AIM, now and forever.

With a worldwide data center customer, the company is presently in the qualification process. Subject to qualification, mass manufacturing of the product is scheduled to start in the second quarter of the following year.
PEB110 can transport data at up to 32 gigatransfers per second (GT/s) thanks to PCle Gen5, which is used to the new device and offers double the bandwidth of Gen4. As a result, PEB110 may perform twice as well as the previous generation while increasing power efficiency by over 30%.
In order to greatly improve information security characteristics, SK Hynix has also implemented the security protocol and data model technology, or SPDM, to PEB110 for the first time in its data-center SSDs.
Secure server monitoring and authentication are provided by SPDM, a critical security solution focused on safeguarding server systems. Given the surge in assaults targeting data centers, the business anticipates that PEB110 with SPDM will satisfy clients’ demanding information security requirements.
For increased compatibility across worldwide data centers, the product will be available in three capacity versions: 2 terabyte (TB), 4 TB, and 8 TB. It also satisfies the OCP3 version 2.5 criteria.
Open Compute Project (OCP): A global consortium of top data center providers debating specifications for eSSDs, software and hardware to construct extremely energy-efficient data centers.
Ahn Hyun, Head of the N-S Committee at SK Hynix, stated, “The new product builds on the company’s best-in-class 238-high 4D NAND, boasting the most competitive standards in the industry in terms of cost, performance, and quality.”
Ahn stated, “Going forward, SK Hynix is on track to move forward with customer qualification and volume production to firmly establish their position as the leading global supplier of AI memory in the steadily expanding SSD market for data centers.”
News Highlights
By utilizing 5th-generation PCIe, the SSD offers 2x performance and over 30% more power efficiency than the previous version. In 2Q of next year, mass manufacturing will start after client qualification. SK Hynix will expand its data center SSD line to better serve a wider range of clientele. After success with HBM, the company will strengthen its position as the top global supplier of AI memory in NAND solutions, such as SSDs.

While there is no shortage of means to communicate online, AIM holds a special place in many of our hearts.
For some of us, it was the first place we talked to our crush. It was our internet playground, where we grew accustomed to online acronyms and first learned about the very healthy habit of internet stalking.
AIM is the first place we ever wrote a web bio, likely in Comic Sans, with outrageous text and background colors.
AIM never stood a chance at keeping up with the pace of innovation on the web, which is why its sun has set, but that doesn’t change what it meant to us.
So today, pour one out for teenage you typing furiously on the computer in your parents’ office. LOL. AFK. BRB. ROFL.
