The Transformative Impact of AI on Writing: A Call for Strategic Engagement
In an age where the flicker of screens outshines the glow of ink upon parchment, the landscape of writing has undergone a profound metamorphosis. Artificial intelligence (AI), that wondrous product of human ingenuity, has become an omnipresent force, reshaping not only how we create but also how we conceive the very act of writing itself. No longer confined to the realm of science fiction, AI has infiltrated the sanctum of the writer’s study, presenting both challenges and opportunities that demand our astute observation and thoughtful engagement...expand read more

Back when we started Ellipsus (it's been eighty-four years… or two, but it sure feels like forever), we encountered generative AI.
Immediately, we realized LLMs were the antithesis of creativity and community, and the threat they posed to genuine artistic expression and collaboration. (P.S.: we have a lot to say about it.)
Since then, writing tools—from big tech entities like Google Docs and Microsoft Word, to a host of smaller platforms and publishers—have rapidly integrated LLMs, looking to capitalize on the novelty of generative AI. Now, our tools are failing us, corrupted by data-scraping and hostile to users' consent and IP ownership.
The future of creative work requires a nuanced understanding of the challenges ahead, and a shared vision—writers for writers. We know we're stronger together. And in a rapidly changing world, we know that transparency is paramount.
So… some Ellipsus facts:
We will never include generative AI in Ellipsus.
We will never access your work without explicit consent, sell your data, or use your work for exploitative purposes.
We believe in the strength of creative communities and the stories they tell—and we want to foster a space in which writers can connect and tell their stories in freedom and safety—without compromise.

AI for Research: My Ultimate Research Assistant
Is there really any benefit to using AI for creative research? I’m going to tell you the answer up front. Yes, a million times, yes! Writing research does not live up to the fantasy. It’s the part of writing I used to view as ‘living the dream’. The thought of visiting Paris and sipping on a cafe au lait as I soaked up the city’s vibes was how I’d envisioned it. But the reality isn’t anything…

I rarely post personal stuff on here but irl I'm a writer whose work covers tech and AI quite a bit and with the WGA strike ongoing, I really want to stress that the reason Hollywood execs and higher-ups think they can just replace writers with chatgpt or have someone come and edit AI generated text is because they already think writing is that easy.
these people look at their shows, movies, etc as marketable (re, profitable) content so all they are watching for is "okay this show performed badly" and "this movie performed well" and I can promise you in a boardroom the quality, the time and effort that went into the actual writing is NEVER discussed as a contributing factor when it comes to the difference between those two things.
That's also the reason tools like chatgpt seem like magic to these people, because they've devalued the act of creation and everything that goes into making something that resonates with its audience, so naturally something that can scrape the entire digital world and spit something out that falls in line with what you asked seems like a wizard's spell, because they ALREADY think of writing as an afterthought, something where they just go "I need a show that appeals to the 16-24 age range" and writers can just fill in the blanks and they won't have to PAY PEOPLE for that.
There's a vast difference between art and content, and if you want to see more of the former, you should be furious they're trying to replace writers with what is essentially a programmable template generator. Pay your writers.

any response to butteredfrogs post?
I did use ai for that image before I knew how shtty ai was and haven't used it since and I apologize.
As for posting text written by chat gpt, I had chatgpt write an idea for a sims 4 expansion pack, similarly to how students use chatgpt for homework and general knowledge, which I don't see a problem with.

Just say that you lack creativity and are jealous of people who can express themselves with their chosen medium of expression. There are millions of ways and tools to express oneself, yet you chose AI to do your hard work, which is “the act of creating”. Feel ashamed, not proud.

These are statements that can co-exist:
Data scraping methods used to train AI text and image generators should be regulated by governments.
Researchers, journalists, and archivists use the same data scraping for their work, and AI text and image generators also have legitimate ethical uses.
Data scraping is legal in many places and it's not easy for websites with publicly available data to prevent it.
Some people have had/will have their income negatively impacted by AI-generated content. That sucks and they have my sympathy.
It's unethical to fire employees or contractors (or pay them less, etc.) only to replace their work with content from AI text or image generators.
It's shitty that tech bros are making fun of many people's concerns about AI-generated content.
It's shitty that a lot of people are throwing around blanket statements like, "Anyone who uses AI-anything is a thief."
It's likely that most individuals will never be harmed by AI-generated content because such generators do not 'steal' or copy specific works of literature or visual art—it's more like they're taking averages from huge amounts of scraped public data.
I'm concerned about both the data collection methods used to train AI content generators and how much information they have already used for training.
AI text and image generation is not inherently evil, nor are people who use it. It's a technology with many applications and can be used for both ethical and unethical purposes.
Capitalism is unethical.

(no, I don't check my notes, so if you want to call me names for pointing out that this is a complex and nuanced issue, have fun with that)

dear "creators" who depends on ai
how does it feel to be so absolutely lazy and useless as a human being ?? how does it feel to have a functioning brain but can't use it properly ?? how does it feel to be so absolutely incredibly dull and uncreative that you can't muster 200 words to convey your ideas ?? how does it feel to have to face the fact that you suck so damn bad and you have to live with it ??

I was working on editing a fic in Ao3 and highlighted a sentence fragment, and the Edge browser I use had the audacity to suggest using (what I presume was) AI to rewrite my sentence.
My reaction: excuse me?!? You're suggesting I use AI to write my fic?!? Are you aware of what I do for a hobby, what this site even is??? Do you know the pride I take in being able to say every word in my fics, the overused, the unnecessarily obscure, the purple prose that exists solely because I like writing it, is completely and wholly of my design? That the only influence on my writing shall be the human writers who came before me and the other galaxy-brained human fandom writers I know? There is NO PLACE for you here! BEGONE!!!
So yeah; I'll never use AI to write so much as a work email because my Writer Pride won't let me. 😁

Revolutionising Writing with AI: My Journey Begins
Embark on a journey with me as I explore how AI is redefining the creative process. First stop: ChatGPT! #AIWriting #ChatGPT
Hi, Everyone! I’m so excited to share the first in my new post series, ‘Empowering Creativity with AI: A Writer’s Journey.’ The series shares how I’ve transformed my life and career by writing with AI. Over the last year, there’s been enormous coverage of Artificial Intelligence (AI). I’ve mentioned it a few times in comments on others’ posts and even shared an image I made using AI on this…

-takes my cocoa back- alright, this is fast and admittedly not the super prettiest ever BUT. This is a free-to-use word tracker complete with a progress calculator and an accompanying chart. It's super easy to use, it's reusable, and it comes from an original creator (I write scifi and fantasy! hiiiiiii) who does not support AI and never will, for several reasons.
So like, if you're still on the fence about Other Places with cool charts and trackers that help you see your progress in real time... I mean, I'm not going to tell you what to do but I did make a handy chart for you to use whenever you want even when it's not April/July/November. And it's adaptable!
(If you don't understand how and why it works, hit me or your local spreadsheet coder up for assistance! I don't mind.)
Anyway like to let me know you like it, reblog so other people can find this alternative to... Things.

DNI
I’ve never considered adding one of these because I normally see them as pretentious and a little snobby (specifically in regards to certain ships) but in this case I’m making an exception.
DNI if you support AI art or writing
