Gotta have that DCA Au eh? Lemme think...
Emotional Support Human!AU
Its the future 10 years from now! Universal Benefits are a Global Standard, Millionaires no longer exist (once you start making over $999,999.99 any money over that goes into the public fund and you get a star named after you), and Progress is being made on reversing ecological damage. 🥳
HOWEVER! 😲
Pretty Much Everything is Automated. Or in the Proccess of Being Automated.
Not that You have ever been able to graduate college or gotten past being a cashier in the 40+ years you've been alive. 🙃 (You're not about to waste time and money fighting to get a ND diagnosis if theres no tangible benefit)
Although your experience in retail has left you with a particular set of skills 😎 you've been working with and assisting automated checkouts for years, but with customers no longer violently abusing the kiosks, and AI becoming less prone to hallucinations, you're not really needed anymore 😔 your UBI is pretty good, but you've wanted to work with robots your Whole Life! 😤
Which makes you a perfect fit for a new job opening at Castle Daycare, a nearly fully automated childcare facility staffed by an advanced two phase AI system!
All you have to do is be an extra pair of hands, diffuse conflicts (aka let people yell at you. Lol, like anything scares you anymore 😂) and walk the AI through any hallucinations. (Easy peasy! The self checkouts would see customers that weren't there all the time and ring up foods that didn't exist)
And its a great Gig! The DCA is funny, smart, super competent at taking care of kids, the Moon phase was a bit intense at first but once they decided you weren't a threat you got along great! And they care So Much... Your heart gets a little fluttery... (you reaaaaally hope this doesn't trigger a crush 😓 so annoying. And with biometric scanners you wouldn't be able to hide it like you always do 😰)
But their hallucination is... A problem 😕 unlike the kiosks this hallucination is the same every time, and kinda cruel. They describe it as a woman in a patched together rabbit costume. Moves wrong, sounds wrong, carries a chefs knife and at worst triggers "Seige Mode" which locks down the daycare and authorizes use-of-force.
They've broken windows trying to get at her.
Theyre learning to trust you though, if you cant see her, or don't respond to her, shes not there. You promise. You may look fluffy, but youre strong enough to deck anything that scary with the nearest table.
(you of course have PTSD from all the apocalypses and economic meltdowns and undiagnosed autism)
...You really cant say no when they ask you to stay 😣💕
(slice-of-life, domestic, Trauma healing, and they were roommates, near future sci-fi)
"The 40+ years you've been alive" I've Only Been Alive Half of That, But I Feel You.
#ask#long ask#emotional support human au#esh au#'everyone sucks here' au aheuhgdhg /j#but also i really adore this idea#that's so cute#castle daycare...#i love it#i like imagining it'd be full of animatronics!#all fairytale themed#with ofc sun and moon being the main guys#this is a cute au thank you so much for sharing!!!#<3#( / w \)#anonymous

Chickens Check-Up: Unparalleled Poultry Diagnostic Technologies
Poultry diagnostics refers to the process of identifying diseases, disorders and health conditions affecting poultry flocks. Accurate diagnosis is crucial for poultry farmers and veterinarians to effectively manage disease outbreaks and maintain bird health. Over the past few decades, there have been significant advancements in diagnostic techniques and technologies used for poultry. Bacteriological Diagnostics Bacterial diseases are a major cause of economic losses in poultry production worldwide. Traditional bacteriological diagnostic methods rely on bacterial isolation and identification through culture and biochemical tests. However, these culture-based methods can be time-consuming, taking 2-7 days to identify bacteria. Molecular diagnostic techniques like PCR have revolutionized bacterial diagnostics. PCR allows rapid identification of bacteria directly from clinical samples within hours. Real-time PCR technologies provide quantitative results. Multiplex PCR assays can detect several bacterial pathogens in a single reaction. Advances in sequencing technologies now allow whole genome sequencing of bacterial isolates for epidemiological studies. Viral Diagnostics Viral diseases severely impact poultry health and productivity. Serological tests like ELISA, agar gel immunodiffusion and haemagglutination inhibition are most commonly used for viral antibody detection. However, serology only indicates exposure rather than active infection. Molecular tests like PCR and next-generation sequencing play a key role in rapid and sensitive detection of viral pathogens in clinical samples. Quantitative PCR tests allow viral load monitoring during infection and treatment. Microarray technology allows simultaneous detection of multiple viral pathogens. Rapid on-site or pen-side tests are also being developed for prompt diagnosis and decision making. Avian Influenza and Newcastle Disease Surveillance Early detection of highly pathogenic notifiable avian influenza (HPAI) and virulent Newcastle disease (ND) viruses in commercial poultry flocks is crucial. In affected regions, poultry diagnostic laboratories conduct active disease surveillance in live birds and post-mortem specimens using real-time PCR and virus isolation following OIE guidelines. Full genome sequencing of positive isolates provides information about virus evolution and spread. Sentinel surveillance programs involve regular sampling from commercial and backyard poultry farms. Such structured surveillance activities aid prompt detection and control of HPAI and ND outbreaks. Role of AI and Digital Technologies Artificial intelligence and digital technologies are revolutionizing poultry diagnostics. Computer vision and deep learning enable automatic detection of gross lesions from digital images with high accuracy. Whole genome sequencing data combined with epidemiological metadata aids prediction of outbreak spread using machine learning algorithms. Handheld smartphones and tablets integrated with diagnostic platforms allow remote clinical decision support. Automated laboratory workflows using robotics minimize manual errors and improve turn-around-time. Such advances will make poultry disease diagnosis increasingly rapid, sensitive, accurate and affordable. Concluding Remarks Overall, poultry diagnostics has advanced tremendously over the past few decades owing to incorporation of innovative molecular, biochemical and digital technologies. Early and accurate diagnosis remains imperative for effective disease control and optimal poultry production worldwide. Strategy

Bank of England Governor: AI won't lead to mass job losses

Bank of England Governor: AI won't lead to mass job losses
.pp-multiple-authors-boxes-wrapper display:none; img width:100%;
Andrew Bailey, Governor of the Bank of England, has rebutted fears that AI will lead to widespread unemployment.
“I’m an economic historian, before I became a central banker. Economies adapt, jobs adapt, and we learn to work with it. And I think, you get a better result by people with machines than with machines on their own,” Bailey told the BBC.
Bailey’s comments come as the latest economic assessment shows that UK businesses investing in AI are expected to see gains in efficiency and output. Utilising AI is anticipated to provide productivity benefits across multiple sectors.
However, Baroness Stowell of the House of Lords has cautioned that the UK risks “missing out on the AI goldrush” if it does not act quickly.
A report from the Lords’ Communications and Digital Committee honed in on large language models and tools like ChatGPT. The report called for updated copyright laws and urged the government to provide clarity on AI regulation—warning too much could hinder AI development in the country.
Both Bailey and the Lords committee seem to agree that the focus should be on harnessing the upsides of AI while managing legitimate risks.
The financial services industry also stands to gain from responsible AI adoption.
“Generative AI brings potentially exciting benefits for financial institutions. When it comes to fighting financial crime, for example, AI can improve the accuracy and speed of detection by analysing large data sets,” said Dr Henry Balani, Head of Industry & Regulatory Affairs at Encompass Corporation.
Balani emphasised however that key roles like Know Your Customer (KYC) analysts are irreplaceable for now. “It will instead accelerate existing processes and augment the work of analysts, empowering them to detect financial crime risk more quickly and comprehensively,” he added.
“The maximum value of generative AI can only be realised if banks and financial institutions have already put in place robust digital and automated processes to optimise the quality of data collated and deliver deeper customer insights. By prioritising this now, banks will be well equipped to take advantage of this new technology as it continues to evolve and mature.”
Last month, research from EXL found that around 89 percent of insurance and banking firms in the UK have introduced AI solutions over the past year. However, issues with data optimisation are often hindering their benefits.

How AI could take over elections – and undermine democracy
Could organizations use artificial intelligence language models such as ChatGPT to induce voters to behave in specific ways?
Sen. Josh Hawley asked OpenAI CEO Sam Altman this question in a May 16, 2023, U.S. Senate hearing on artificial intelligence. Altman replied that he was indeed concerned that some people might use language models to manipulate, persuade and engage in one-on-one interactions with voters.
Altman did not elaborate, but he might have had something like this scenario in mind. Imagine that soon, political technologists develop a machine called Clogger – a political campaign in a black box. Clogger relentlessly pursues just one objective: to maximize the chances that its candidate – the campaign that buys the services of Clogger Inc. – prevails in an election.
While platforms like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube use forms of AI to get users to spend more time on their sites, Clogger’s AI would have a different objective: to change people’s voting behavior.
An AI-driven political campaign could be all things to all people. (Credit: Eric Smalley, TCUS; Biodiversity Heritage Library/Flickr; Taymaz Valley/Flickr, CC BY-ND
How Clogger would work
As a political scientist and a legal scholar who study the intersection of technology and democracy, we believe that something like Clogger could use automation to dramatically increase the scale and potentially the effectiveness of behavior manipulation and microtargeting techniques that political campaigns have used since the early 2000s. Just as advertisers use your browsing and social media history to individually target commercial and political ads now, Clogger would pay attention to you – and hundreds of millions of other voters – individually.
It would offer three advances over the current state-of-the-art algorithmic behavior manipulation. First, its language model would generate messages — texts, social media and email, perhaps including images and videos — tailored to you personally. Whereas advertisers strategically place a relatively small number of ads, language models such as ChatGPT can generate countless unique messages for you personally – and millions for others – over the course of a campaign.

AI is here to stay. Now we need to ensure everyone benefits
by Juliet A. Gerrard, Kyle Webster, Stuart McNaughton, and Tahu Kukutai
Specialist machine learning and narrow AI could help us to start removing the “four Ds” - dirty, dull, difficult, dangerous - from our daily work. from www.shutterstock.com, CC BY-ND
Artificial intelligence (AI) is already in use in many sectors. Its contribution is expected to rise steadily, driven by advances in data storage, computer processing power and connectivity.
Following last week’s report on AI by the Australian Council of Learned Academies (ACOLA), the Royal Society of New Zealand Te Apārangi today launches a report that focuses on the opportunities and risks the “fourth industrial revolution” might bring to Aotearoa New Zealand.
AI, in all its applications, is predicted to contribute some US$15.7 trillion to the global economy by 2030. This represents roughly the combined GDP of China and India in 2018.
Australia and New Zealand are yet to develop national AI strategies. The reports look 20 years ahead, which is a useful period for policy development. The explicit focus on well-being provides a helpful frame to start national conversations about how to embrace these new technologies, leading rather than passively accepting advances from offshore.
AI in New Zealand
New Zealand has started to adopt AI in the government sector, with most government agencies employing some form of it. There are advantages in New Zealand’s small size and strong legal frameworks to develop protocols for data ethics and security, and intellectual property, and to nurture a diverse AI-savvy workforce.
Placing equity at the centre of the conversation means that we can choose to adopt AI technologies across education, government and industry in the context of public good. This would mitigate the risk of importing biases from offshore algorithms and allow us to identify areas where AI can benefit all New Zealanders, rather than a small international elite.
Within the reports’ 20-year horizon, specialist machine learning and narrow AI (a specific type of AI that outperforms humans in a very narrowly defined task) will help us to start removing the “four Ds” – dirty, dull, difficult, dangerous – from our daily work. Instead, we will be able to use machines to free people up to use their originality, creativity and questioning abilities.
It is unlikely that machines will challenge these skills in this time frame. Artificial general intelligence, which could compete with these more human forms of cognition, is likely many decades away. By focusing on this nearer-term future, the ACOLA report makes concrete recommendations on strategic investment, regulatory mechanisms, equity and respect for intrinsic human rights, while calling for a national strategy to bring these approaches together.
What AI could do for New Zealand
A recent New Zealand government report signalled that AI-driven automation and optimisation could result in economic gains in productivity. Think drones applying herbicides in an orchard, identifying weeds through AI-driven vision recognition systems, then feeding the data into a central system. This could mean less herbicide use, better farm productivity and environmental outcomes, and fewer people operating herbicide sprayers (at least in the way they do currently).
But the predicted gains in productivity are not without risks. Estimates of the proportion of jobs likely to be automated by AI vary wildly. So do estimates of the degree to which those will be replaced by new jobs. Some of these new jobs are currently difficult to imagine. Consider someone preparing for a career as a social media manager back in 2000, four years before Facebook was founded.
Foresight will be key to building a resilient and adaptable workforce. Key skills in STEM subjects (especially maths), coupled with strong foundations in the humanities, will be important. AI experts agree that, as AI technologies are implemented at scale, the key concern is the rate at which they may disrupt work and drive inequalities in income and employment opportunities.
Even if the former orchard sprayer is able to find another job, they are unlikely to get a direct financial payoff in the same way that the owners of the farm will. Multiplied thousands of different ways across New Zealand’s economy, these AI-driven changes threaten to widen inequities. Research related to this issue, for example at the Centre for AI and Public Policy (CAIPP), will need to feed into policy.
Other risks of AI
Economic effects are just one part of the story. The reports raise several issues, including lethal autonomous weapons, threats to democratic decision making and the disturbing gender imbalance in the rapidly growing AI workforce. The discussions fit into a wider body of recent work on AI relevant to New Zealand. This includes an analysis of the government’s use of predictive systems, establishment of the OECD principles on AI and a report on the state of the industry in New Zealand. This work identifies an urgent need for clear principles for the use of AI and state regulation for socially accepted use and standards.
The ACOLA report discusses many aspects of AI relevant to our responsibilities under the Treaty of Waitangi. AI technologies need to be developed to augment critical thinking and social and emotional skills at all levels, and in a culturally inclusive context. An important implication, consistent with the government’s focus on well-being, is the need to closely monitor societal impacts.
The report also identifies where New Zealand could contribute to the global conversation, including in indigenous data sovereignty. Groups such as Te Mana Raraunga and Te Hiku Media actively explore how tikanga (Māori customary system of values and practices) should be applied to these emerging technologies.
As the ACOLA report notes:
An AI strategy that places equity at its forefront will strengthen Aotearoa New Zealand’s international reputation in this arena and ensure that Aotearoa New Zealand is not left behind by some of the most important developments of the 21st century.
Overall, we see enormous potential for transformative opportunities, from intelligent tutoring systems in education through to precision agriculture. These could improve well-being across all sectors of society, government, agriculture and industry.
Realising this potential will require addressing the substantial challenges inherent in ensuring a fair and equitable transition into an AI-enabled future, making sure that benefits also reach those at risk of being excluded.

Chapter 1 “Remembrance Day”
It’s time. He doesn’t want to but he knows he has to get up. He could hear the alarm clock blaring across the room. Silently he cursed to himself. There’s really no need for the alarm. He doesn’t sleep deep enough to need one but he keeps it anyway.
It was Steve’s alarm.
He tried, a thousand times, to get rid of the damned thing. But he couldn’t even find the courage to change the time on it so it didn’t go off at such an ungodly hour. God, why did he always get up so early, he thought. Every time he tries his heart contracts and he’s left shaking and drenched in sweat. So he just lives with it—even though it’s a painful reminder that Steve would never wake up early to watch the sunrise again.
Somehow he managed to get out of bed and get ready. It’s Remembrance Day, a day dedicated to the fallen heroes of the war against Thanos. It’s also the day Steve died. A day he would rather forget. A day he can never forget. A day no one would ever let him forget. Because as the world celebrates the bravery and sacrifice of Captain America, Iron man should always bear witness. The husband. The widower. The one he saved the world for and gave up his life.
To Tony Stark, it was pure torture.
He’d rather be lying down dead beside his husband. But Steve made sure he lived. That fucking bastard,” he muttered as he made his way to the helipad where the Quinjet is waiting to take him to Washington. There, he and the remaining Avengers are going to be honored for the 7th year in a row. Dead for 7 years and Steve still drives him insane. He’d give everything to have him back.
The flight was only less than an hour but he could already feel his head throbbing. He’ll definitely be in a bad mood for the rest of the day. Good, he thought. Maybe then they’ll let him skip the ceremonies. As soon as the thought came to him he knew it was never going to happen. The world needed a symbol for their superficial annual grieving. Why they can’t understand that he is still living with the grief is beyond him. All he wants is to be left alone. He doesn’t need to be reminded of how selfless Steve was—he sees the proof in the mirror every day.
He found Rhodey in the standby room, already finished with his coffee.
“No Peter and Harley again?” Rhodey asked as soon as he saw Tony by himself. Tony shrugged. He’s used to going alone to this charade now. Peter refused and begged Tony not to force him to attend the ceremonies from the beginning. I can’t do it Dad! I can’t let him go! Meanwhile, Harley stopped coming after the 3rd year. If Peter doesn’t have to go, then I don’t want to go. He wanted to get mad at his children, but he knew how hard it was for them. Things weren’t exactly peachy between Peter and Steve when Steve died. Steve was still trying to make amends for leaving him for Bucky. Peter, who was old enough to understand what his Pops had done, couldn’t forgive him.
“Isn’t this supposed to start at 8? Where is everybody?” he asked, changing the subject. Before Rhodey could reply the door opened and in came Nat and Sam.
“Bruce isn’t coming,” Nat spat. “And so is Thor. It’s just the four of us today. I can’t believe those shitheads, missing something this important!”
Tony and Rhodey exchanged curious looks. Natasha is in one of her moods—something they’ve seen getting more frequent over the years. She used to be one of the hardest people to read but ever since she lost Steve, the person she trusted the most, she had become temperamental and careless. Sam subtly signaled them not to engage with her. And they didn’t. Tony had no desire to further agitate his already massive headache. Hesilently wondered how Sam could tolerate her temper tantrums. Maybe the rumours about them being a couple now are true. Whatever. It wasn’t really not his concern. As long as Sam is there to make sure Natasha doesn’t go off the edge he could care less about their status. He just wants to get this event over with so he could go home and sleep.
These days nothing hardly ever happens in the world. Yes, they still had the occasional nuisance. But nothing major enough to require the services of the Avengers. They’ve become nothing but figureheads. Perhaps the hullabaloo with Thanos wore out would be bad guys. He couldn’t decide if it was a bad thing. Yes, they had peace. But all he wanted was peace of mind. And since he couldn’t really get that he craved distraction—which is so hard to come by these days.
Tony silently thanked the heavens when one of the organizers finally fetched them. The presidents were already onstage. It was show time.
Skies were blue. There was a gentle breeze. Everything looked and felt perfect.
Fuck me. It was all Tony could think.
Fuck me. Fuck you. This is all your fault you selfish sonafabitch.
They were playing a tribute video for Captain America. The background music was deep and sweeping and full of drama. It was supposed to bring tears to everyone’s eyes. He didn’t need an audiovisual cue. All he needed to do was think of his husband’s smiling face, the one he will never see again, and he is lost. Lost in an ocean. Adrift and drowning at the same time.
His memories took him to the night he first met Steve in person.
He grew up in the shadow of the super soldier. Steve Rogers. Captain America. All his father could talk about while he was growing up was this man who was the very definition of hero. A man who was so selfless he died to save literally the whole world. To Tony he was like the perfect older brother whose perfectly timed death cemented his place on a pedestal. An older brother he was striving to be, while secretly hating on because he could never be him. He resented him, even though he was nothing but a memory. So when he found out from Fury that Captain America had just been recovered and revived, he just had to see him. He wanted to know if his resentment was misguided. He never imagined that seeing Steve for the first time would take his breath away. He was the most beautiful human being he had ever seen.
He was still lost in that memory when the first explosion went off.
“Get the presidents out of here!!!” he heard Rhodey scream. It took him a couple of seconds to register what was going on around them. Another explosion was heard, followed by rapid gun shots.
“Tony! TONY! Get your head out of your ass! We’re under attack!” Natasha was already running towards the end of the street where the explosion came from. Sam was already airborne, ahead of the swat team assigned to this event. It was pandemonium everywhere.
He stood frozen for a second.
Shit.
And then his muscle memory activated.
“Friday, get me my suit,” he spoke to his AI. Nowadays he doesn’t wear the automated suit that lets him gear up in seconds. It’s always just nearby though, in this case, in the Quinjet.
“Already on its way, boss,” his AI replied. A minute later he felt the familiar weight of metal around his skin. It has been so long since he was dressed this way. It almost feels uncomfortable.
“Look mom! It’s Ironman! He’s back!” he heard a kid scream while he was being dragged away by his mother to safety. The word seemed so foreign.
“Tony? Are you suited?” he heard Rhodey through his coms.
“Yeah. Where are you?”
“I’m escorting the presidents. Sam and Nat are headed east.”
“Do you have visuals on the bomber?”
“Bombers. And they’re armed to the teeth—“
Another explosion shakes them. This time, near the Lincoln Memorial.
”Fuck!” Nat’s curse rang in his ear and another memory ate at him.
Language. The first few years of Captain America’s 2nd life was a source of fond memories. His propriety and naivety gave them all quite a few laughs. But he was also a great leader.
“I’m on my way to the 2nd location,” he said. He flew towards the Lincoln Memorial, suddenly alert and focused.
“Tony, please be careful,” said Rhodey.
“Of course,” he replied. He wanted to be offended but knew his friend only meant well. He knew Rhodey thinks he’s emotionally compromised.
Nothing could have prepared him for the devastation he found. He smelled and heard it before he saw it. Bodies everywhere. Death. Destruction. The screams of people in pain or running away were piercing. He surveyed the area, looking for the bomber, but all he saw were more bodies, dead and alive. It never used to derail him whenever they were in battle. Sure, he grieved after every fight but during the fight, all he focused on was the enemy.
He struggled to keep alert.
“Tony, do you have visuals on the perps?”
“No, not yet—“
“HELP! SOMEONE HELP US!”
A voice steals his attention.
No. It can’t be.
“Please! I need help!”
He followed the voice, his heart beating wildly in his chest.
“Please, someone, anyone! Help us!”
There’s ringing in his ears—but the voice was crystal clear. He knew that voice.
He searched frantically. He didn’t care that the bomber had been forgotten suddenly. All he cared about was that voice. He cannot be mistaken.
Steve.
It was Steve’s voice.
“Help!”
“Tony, what’s going on?” he heard Rhodey. But he dared not reply, afraid that speaking would break it—whatever spell it was that was letting him hear his dead husband’s voice so clearly.
“Tony?!”
He turned off his coms.
Where are you? Oh God, please let me find him—
And he did.
