one 100 word email written with ai costs roughly one bottle of water to produce. the discussion of whether or not using ai for work is lazy becomes a non issue when you understand there is no ethical way to use it regardless of your intentions or your personal capabilities for the task at hand
with all due respect, this isnt true. *training* generative ai takes a ton of power, but actually using it takes about as much energy as a google search (with image generation being slightly more expensive). we can talk about resource costs when averaged over the amount of work that any model does, but its unhelpful to put a smokescreen over that fact. when you approach it like an issue of scale (i.e. "training ai is bad for the environment, we should think better about where we deploy it/boycott it/otherwise organize abt this) it has power as a movement. but otherwise it becomes a personal choice, moralizing "you personally are harming the environment by using chatgpt" which is not really effective messaging. and that in turn drives the sort of "you are stupid/evil for using ai" rhetoric that i hate. my point is not whether or not using ai is immoral (i mean, i dont think it is, but beyond that). its that the most common arguments against it from ostensible progressives end up just being reactionary
Tumblr media
i like this quote a little more- its perfectly fine to have reservations about the current state of gen ai, but its not just going to go away.

Semiconductors: The Driving Force Behind Technological Advancements
The semiconductor industry is a crucial part of our modern society, powering everything from smartphones to supercomputers. The industry is a complex web of global interests, with multiple players vying for dominance.
Taiwan has long been the dominant player in the semiconductor industry, with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) accounting for 54% of the market in 2020. TSMC's dominance is due in part to the company's expertise in semiconductor manufacturing, as well as its strategic location in Taiwan. Taiwan's proximity to China and its well-developed infrastructure make it an ideal location for semiconductor manufacturing.
However, Taiwan's dominance also brings challenges. The company faces strong competition from other semiconductor manufacturers, including those from China and South Korea. In addition, Taiwan's semiconductor industry is heavily dependent on imports, which can make it vulnerable to supply chain disruptions.
China is rapidly expanding its presence in the semiconductor industry, with the government investing heavily in research and development (R&D) and manufacturing. China's semiconductor industry is led by companies such as SMIC and Tsinghua Unigroup, which are rapidly expanding their capacity. However, China's industry still lags behind Taiwan's in terms of expertise and capacity.
South Korea is another major player in the semiconductor industry, with companies like Samsung and SK Hynix owning a significant market share. South Korea's semiconductor industry is known for its expertise in memory chips such as DRAM and NAND flash. However, the industry is heavily dependent on imports, which can make it vulnerable to supply chain disruptions.
The semiconductor industry is experiencing significant trends, including the growth of the Internet of Things (IoT), the rise of artificial intelligence (AI), and the increasing demand for 5G technology. These trends are driving semiconductor demand, which is expected to continue to grow in the coming years.
However, the industry also faces major challenges, including a shortage of skilled workers, the increasing complexity of semiconductor manufacturing and the need for more sustainable and environmentally friendly manufacturing processes.
To overcome the challenges facing the industry, it is essential to invest in research and development, increase the availability of skilled workers and develop more sustainable and environmentally friendly manufacturing processes. By working together, governments, companies and individuals can ensure that the semiconductor industry remains competitive and sustainable, and continues to drive innovation and economic growth in the years to come.

Meta to Begin Global Layoffs Next Week Amid Workforce Restructuring
Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, is set to initiate another wave of global layoffs next week as part of its ongoing restructuring efforts. The company, which has been aggressively shifting its focus toward artificial intelligence and efficiency, plans to cut around 5% of its workforce, primarily targeting what it describes as its "lowest performers."
Tumblr media
According to internal memos from Meta’s Head of People, Janelle Gale, employees impacted by the job cuts will start receiving notices as early as 5 a.m. local time on Monday in most countries, including the U.S. However, workers in Germany, France, Italy, and the Netherlands will be exempt due to strict local labor regulations. Employees across other regions, including parts of Europe, Asia, and Africa, will be notified between February 11 and February 18.
The layoffs, referred to internally as "performance terminations," come as Meta looks to optimize its workforce while simultaneously accelerating the hiring of machine learning and AI engineers. The company’s recent strategy suggests a shift toward a more AI-driven business model, which has already led to major restructuring efforts across various departments.
Unlike previous mass layoffs, Meta has decided to keep its offices open on Monday, and no company-wide announcements are expected regarding the job cuts. The move highlights Meta’s commitment to maintaining operational stability while executing its latest cost-cutting and talent realignment strategies.

“The conservatives are fools: They whine about the decay of traditional values, yet they enthusiastically support technological progress and economic growth. Apparently it never occurs to them that you can’t make rapid, drastic changes in the technology and the economy of a society without causing rapid changes in all other aspects of the society as well, and that such rapid changes inevitably break down traditional values.”
Ted Kaczynski, Industrial Society and Its Future (1995)
“In a curious paradox, the unrestrained free market capitalism which is threatening the old conservative religious and cultural communities of Protestant America with dissolution is being urged on by the political representatives of those same communities.”
