Fallout 4 OC - Nate Gust Sarid (The Sole Survivor)
Tumblr media
Further information under the cut:
Here's my Sole Survivor for Fallout 4, Nate Gust Sarid, just a regular (if sometimes scrutinized) retired U.S Army veteran who just wanted to have a suburban life with a nice job to support his wife Nora and their infant son, Shaun, as well as paying for therapy in regard to his imposter syndrome and place in the "American Dream" and his service, but unfortunately, nukes dropped. Good news, he signed his family up to Vault 111, so they were able to get to safety in there. Bad news, they had to leave Codsworth behind... oh, and they get cryogenically frozen, he watches his beloved wife Nora get shot and his son kidnapped, and awakens in an abandoned vault as the sole survivor... or had he ever been? Regardless, he makes his way into the Commonwealth where he has to pick between four factions (plus the general populace) waging against each other. These factions include; down-on-their-luck underdogs (Minutemen), a group of activists for android rights with a tendency of espionage (Railroad), a military of power armored technology fanatics who are kind of xenophobic (Maxson's Brotherhood of Steel) and lastly the organized science and robotics club gone too far who also kidnapped Nate's baby boy (Insititute). Naturally, Nate picks the first option, and tries to get the other three to get along (to... varying degrees of success). At least he's got his wacky companions to keep him company.
Nate, at a height of 6 feet and 3 inches, becomes the strong, handsome and healthy 33-year-old general of the Minutemen, thanks to supportive and reliable baby boy Preston Garvey, on a journey to reestablish a functional order in the Commonwealth's settlements, and find his baby son Shaun in the process (and avenge his late wife in the process). His hygiene is up to date and is quite incredible with his hands, Nate's sense of style is not so out of place amongst the Commonwealth (unless he wears his customized power armor that he borrowed indefinitely from Maxson's chapter of the Brotherhood of Steel) but manages to both impress and disappoint Deacon in the fact Nate can blend in with the crowd with such average and null clothing. Nate is so fucking sad but he pushes on anyway despite how much he really wants to give up, only fueled by the need to get his son back (and introduce him to a less hostile environment, no less). He gets even more horrified once he discovers he's not entirely human.
Nate is quite perceptive in his surroundings, people and with what his hands are doing, and his extremely skilled at stealth and combat. Not to mention he's a great cook, with an understanding on how to handle not only animals but also children. He's decent at keeping the peace, managing old world tech, and has a good grasp on his books, with his survival knowledge, street smarts and use of seduction being hindered between his time of service and domesticity. He has good days or bad days, no in-between. Though his communication and persuasion skills could need some more work, especially when it comes to creativity in his plans (he was a soldier told to simply focus on what was ahead and being ordered of him).
With great confidence and passion in his quest to find his son, Nate copes with the horrors he experiences with excessive amounts of hilarious sarcasm. Nate traverses the Commonwealth with mild patience and average intelligence, only going on quests just to get by or rally support for the Minutemen, or to find clues on the whereabouts of his missing son. His happiness went from high to low very quickly after the nukes dropped and he lost pretty much everything in his old life. Shaun was the last piece of that life he wanted to preserve... until he discovers he's sixty years too late to be there for his boy rather than just a decade like he initially thought. He has little anxiety and his beliefs are rather muted.
Nate isn't necessarily mean as he is blunt and coping with sarcasm. This man is incredibly brave, willing to take on Mirelurk Queens, gangsters, Deathclaws and the Brotherhood of Steel if it means getting his son back and giving the Commonwealth a better future. While he doesn't resort to violence, he's aware that his communication skills are far from fantastic, and given the hostile state of the Commonwealth, he is prepared and honestly expects to get his hands dirty and bloody should the need arise. He can think things through but when it comes to his son, Kellog or the Insititute there comes a bit of a hinderance in the planning stage. Nate isn't very agreeable, in fact he's more opposing to forces he believes are unjustified and in the wrong. He'd honestly rather find his son, but Preston's idealism gives him a new purpose and something for him to feel useful. Formerly he was just pragmatic, but spending time with Preston and the Minutemen, as well as travelling and helping others like Nick, Cait, Piper and Hancock around settlements and communities (such as Goodneighbor and Diamond City) and additional factions like the Railroad, Nate gets a bit more hopeful than he'd like to admit. Nate spends a lot more than he saves and prefers the outdoors to the indoors. Honestly its quite terrifying how this man can switch from calm and collected to wild and dangerous so fast. Nate is, and he would never admit this, a possessive man, as well as stubborn and decisive.
His charm is mostly backed up by his sarcastic quips which do help make him somewhat approachable despite his bluntness, and that's not to mention the fact Nate is a truly empathetic man. Definitely generous with what he gives to the settlements in the Commonwealth (something the citizens are extremely thankful for) and his wealth is steady, though he has low aggression (that's not to say he can't be enraged, such as whenever he encounters the Insititute and Kellogg) and he's still in his mourning period so his libido isn't his focus right now (though when it eventually comes back up again, his Rizz isn't too bad given Piper's reception to it, despite how rusty it had gotten).
Nate is quite an honest man (though very blunt), not saying that he can't improvise and adapt while undercover in the Institute. Preston saw the makings of a leader and helped carve out Nate into a natural-born one for the Minutemen and the Commonwealth. Though blunt and sarcastic, he's somewhat polite, though mostly to his companions and most of the faction leaders. Honestly kind of unintentionally gets swept up in the politics of the Commonwealth. Cool, flirty, cute and surprisingly fun, if a little gullible (such as when he entered Goodneighbor), but that doesn't change the fact that, should Kellogg and the Institute be involved (or say, Nuka World), he is the scariest Fallout protagonist there is out of the lot I have.
He doesn't believe in any higher powers, or at least refuses to due to his unconventional creators, though Nate thinks that all of what happened couldn't have been a coincidence (which he is kind of correct). After visiting Far Harbour, and seeing some spooky shit in the Commonwealth, he doesn't throw the idea of magic and the supernatural amongst the espionage androids, mutated monsters and feral braindead ghouls out of the realm of possibility in the Wasteland. Nate believes in soulmates, especially when Piper doesn't throw him out of her life after the revelation that he's a synth whose life has mostly been made up by his son Shaun. While Nate doesn't see the world in black and white, he is aware that some folks are worst and more moral than others, while the rest of them fall in the in-between. He believes luck has something to do with his rebellion, but he also knows most of the events were manufactored by "the Father", aka his son Shaun as some twisted experiment.
Family and friends are amongst the most important priorities Nate has, as well as justice for his wife and the truth behind the Institute and his own origin. The opinions of others come next, especially with his new loved ones that he's managed to find. His health and wealth are something he does try to keep up with at least to find his son or after that, continue on living. Home is on the backburner until after he discovers the truth about Shaun, the Institute, as well as himself.
His SPECIAL stats:
Strength (10), Perception (9), Endurance (4), Charisma (6), Intelligence (5), Agility (7) and Luck (5).
Main Perks include:
Strong Back, Lifegiver, Action Boy, Critical Banker, Wasteland Whisperer, Rifleman and "Science!"

The Mettle Of A Man; Part Four
Fandom: Fallout (4)
Pairing: Eventual Paladin Danse/Female Sole Survivor
Rating: Holy shit M.
AN: Hey there my broskis! I figured I would start backing this up over here as well, cross-posting from my AO3. The chapters got somewhat restructured, so there may be some retreaded ground. Hopefully this will also give me a bit of incentive to actually finish this tale ;-;
Enjoy!
Part One: ArcJet
Part Two: The Prydwen
Part Three: Orders
Paladin Danse, pride of the Brotherhood of Steel, found himself incredibly nervous as he watched Backhand suit up for the first time. She gave him no real reason to be, of course, climbing into her power armor with veteran grace. She had forgone their jumpsuit in favor of her Vault suit so she was short a few of the securing clips, but it was her call. She did put on a hood though, stating that she wasn’t a fan of getting chunks of her hair ripped out by the helmet.
Danse barely hid his grin at the way she shook herself all over once she was in the suit, metal clanking loudly as pieces fell into place. “What do you think, Knight Vega?” He asked cautiously.
“I think I’m gonna’ have a lot of fun with this.” Backhand sounded like she was smiling.
Proctor Ingram sighed. “Yeah yeah, just try not to fuck up your actuators. Damn kids and your Prydwen jumps.”
Danse flipped his helmet and smoothly clicked it into place in his suit’s gorget, then blinked in confusion at the HUD. “Proctor, did you change the-”
“Oh, yeah. Sorry Danse. The yellow HUD makes me queasy.” Ingram apologized. Danse sighed, bringing up the internal options screen and readjusting the HUD color back to the warm amber he preferred. “Don’t be that way, Paladin, I have to look at a million of these helmets every day.”
“What? How do you change the…oh, I got it.” Backhand paused, obviously fiddling with the HUD in her own suit. “ Purple .” She said firmly.
Danse tried to mask his chuckle by clearing his throat, but the look Ingram shot him told him the attempt was unsuccessful. “Well, uh, I think it’s about time we begin our maneuvers.” He said hurriedly.
“You two take as long as you need. Bring Brandis back safe. Backhand, remember what I told you.” Ingram said sternly, saluting the two of them.
Backhand nodded solemnly, returning the salute. “Ad Victoriam, Proctor Ingram.” Danse saluted as well, curious about Ingram's mysterious statement.
Maxson hadn’t cleared them for vertibird transport to a general location. Danse could see why to an extent, the elder probably needed all the aerial support he could get while they sent out scouts to find more clues about the Institute. The reason Maxson had given was...still logical, but a little different.
“ With you on foot, there will be less warning for Brandis. ” Arthur had said in his briefing, arms behind his back as always. “ If he is alive, we don’t know what shape he’ll be in mentally. Use extreme caution. If you fear for your lives, do not hesitate to kill him .” He glared at Danse when he said that and Danse had swallowed hard.
Do not hesitate. Do not hesitate like you did with Cutler, Paladin.
Danse let Backhand set a pace she was comfortable with once they were on the ground and he followed her lead, the paladin silent as they marched. His thoughts churned and roiled, scratching to escape his head in a frenzy of uncertainty. He almost didn’t notice Backhand skipping , aside from how ridiculously loud her sabatons were on the remains of the road. “Knight Vega, what on earth .”
“ Finally! I’ve been trying to ask you something for five minutes. Figured I would opt for a different approach.” She laughed, knuckling his shoulder with her gauntlet. “After we find Paladin Brandis, I have-”
“ If we find Paladin Brandis.” Danse corrected her grimly.
Backhand paused, tilting her head to the side. “Sir?”
“I said, if we find Brandis. There’s no guarantee that he’s alive after all this time. It’s entirely possible that we’re simply on a remains retrieval detail.” Danse warned her.
Backhand shook her head after a moment. “Paladin, you really think I don’t know that? Damn.” She grumbled. “You’d rather find him alive, right? That’s the hope?” Danse nodded reluctantly. Brandis was an incredibly skilled survivalist, a respected squadron leader and free thinker of the highest caliber. He would be a phenomenal asset to the Brotherhood if…
  If he was still alive.
“I apologize for my pessimistic outlook.” Danse said after a moment. “I have not had…exceptional luck when it comes to search and rescue details.”
“Hey, first time for everything.” He was almost positive that she was grinning at him under her helmet. “You’ve got me here. You can't say the homeland doesn't take care of their own; I’m practically the embodiment of a four-leaf clover.”
“We can hope.” Danse murmured, half to himself. “You certainly came through previously.”
“Maybe I’m your good luck charm.”
The notion that he had outlived his men because of luck left a bitter taste in Danse’s mouth and he fell silent once more. She at least seemed to understand not to poke him and simply carried on down the road at an easily-managed pace.
Danse couldn’t decide whether he personally wanted to find Brandis or not. On the one hand, of course he was a valuable asset. But on the other, Brandis had a penchant for… noticing things. Arthur had butted heads with the older man numerous times, usually over what Maxson labeled ‘ trivial issues ’.
And Danse still hadn’t forgotten the nasty rumors he’d heard about the real reason for Recon Squadron Artemis being sent to scout the Commonwealth…
“ Brandis overreaches, connects well with young recruits. The elder fears his influence. ”
“ Brandis was sent to die and you know it! ”
The atmosphere in the barracks had turned ugly fast when Arthur had dropped the tidbit that the Brotherhood lost contact with Squadron Artemis almost immediately upon their arrival in the Commonwealth.
Aspirants got into shouting matches; several scuffles broke out. Danse ended up wading through the midst of a pitched fistfight, throwing one knight over his shoulder and pinning the other beneath his arm momentarily.
“ This is behavior unbecoming of a soldier, knights! ” He had shouted over the ruckus. “ Stop the childish antics, use your brains and think! ” His voice carried in the cramped bunk room, and due to his massive height he was easily visible through the swirling hurricane of young men and women. “ Paladin Brandis would be ashamed of every one of you for losing sight of what is truly important in the Brotherhood! Your brothers and sisters are all you have in the world, you cannot set into them at the first sign of trouble! ”
“ Elder Maxson wanted Paladin Brandis to die! ” One brave scribe cried. “ That’s why he sent him! ”
“ He is the elder and you will show him the respect he deserves! ” Danse admonished the young man. “ I will not tolerate this insubordination! ”
“ You’re only on his side because you’re fucking him! ” The knight over his shoulder yelled furiously, beating his fists against Danse’s shoulder blade.
The entirety of the barracks went dead quiet and Danse was certain his face must have been an ungodly shade of purple from his insinuation. “ What did you just say, Knight? ”
The young man slowed to a stop, and then suddenly burst into tears. Danse set him down on his feet and the knight stood in front of him, his shoulders hunched. “ I ap-pologize, Palad-d-din Danse sir. ” He had hiccupped, saluting him without looking up.
“ Knight, you cannot lash out with harsh words or actions just because something isn’t going your way. ” Danse had known he was letting him off too easy, but the young knight was still weeping. “ You will go to Knight-Captain Cade in the morning. He is…far better at managing situations like these than I am. I fear I will do nothing but cause more damage. ”
“ Paladin Danse, have they told you anything about Paladin Brandis? Anything at all? ” A tiny squire had piped up from the door, her hair already braided for sleep.
Danse shook his head regretfully. “ All I know is what you’ve already been told. I have no other information at this time .”
“ Will…will you tell us if you learn anything new? ” She had continued hesitantly, glancing up at the aspirant holding her hand for confirmation. Murmuring rippled through the crowd, all eyes on Danse as he stood there silent, stoic. The knight's words echoed in his mind over and over, on his side, on his side...
“ You have my word as a Brotherhood paladin, Squire .”
It had been a simple thing to promise then. Almost negligibly simple. Danse shook his head, trying to disperse the memories. This rumination would get him nowhere. Thank goodness he had Knight Vega with him, at least she could keep an eye out for threats while he wandered down his proverbial Memory Lane.
  Speaking of Knight Vega…
Danse swung his head around, perplexed. She had just been here, it wasn’t exactly like she could sneak in all that plating. He spotted her finally as he came over the next rise in the road. She appeared to be speaking to a civilian, the ragged-looking man gesturing wildly off to the side.
“…idea how many of them there are in the facility?” Backhand was asking.
“Usually we only see three to five, b-but sometimes there’s loads more! Hounds too! Please, General, if you can spare the men, we really need your help.” The man begged.
General? Danse thought with confusion. Why is he calling her General?
“Currently, we’re focusing our efforts on rebuilding Fort Independence…er, I mean, the Castle. We have mobile cells but they are few and far between. I will send word that-” Backhand was cut off by the man shaking his head rapidly.
“I knew it, I knew you would refuse! That’s how it always is! Say anything about super mutants and everyone pusses out!” The man shook his fist in Backhand’s impassive face. “I had hoped that you of all people would be able to help us, but I guess I was wrong.” He spat, “should have known better than to trust things would be alright with your group back on the playing field.”
Danse had heard enough, practically stomping down the road towards the man yelling at his charge. “Civilian, I suggest you watch your tone.” He uttered the words curtly, his eyes narrowed behind his visor.
The man huffed out a breath at him, obviously unimpressed. “So you have a bodyguard now, General?”
  “Hardly.” Backhand replied dryly.
Danse got the feeling he had just been insulted, but he brushed it off. “Where is the nest of vermin?” He queried instead, making a considerable effort to try and keep his tone neutral. “You mentioned super mutants.”
“They’re in Weston. The pre-war water treatment plant. Are… you’re going to help?” The man asked uncertainly.
“There are other, more important matters that currently take priority, civilian. When we have the time, we will investigate. Now I would advise you to be on your way before I have to assist you in making the choice of departure.” Danse ordered, his laser rifle not quite at the ready, but high enough that to the untrained eye it would look like he was poised to strike.
The man grumbled something under his breath and then announced, “I'd better see you later, General. Oberland would be a good spot to spiff up, y'know, but it's so close to Weston no one will touch it.”
“Thank you, Rob. Hey, tell your wife I said hello. I hope your little one is doing well.” Backhand's face had gone strangely soft.
For some reason, the man's shoulders relaxed. “She is, she's doing really good. Her mom is teachin' her everything that she knows. She's wicked smart for her age.” He bragged.
No doubt there. Take care of yourself, and tell people to steer clear until we can get to Weston.” Backhand gave the man a nod in reply to the tip of his hat. “Thanks for helping.” She said out of the corner of her mouth to Danse, who straightened up.
“I don’t recall doing anything helpful, Knight Vega.” He was startled when she knocked her pauldron against his own in a playful gesture.
“Rob loves to puff himself up and talk about how no one’s ever done anything for him ever. It’s harmless, but he’ll drag on for ages unless you nip it in the bud.” She grinned at him. “Thanks for going on the offensive and heading him off at the pass. Lots of people are like him out here. When the Minutemen disbanded, it meant that the simple people had to take the full load of raider assaults and super mutant attacks. Still plenty of distrust for me and my crew.”
“Your ‘crew’?” Danse echoed, thoroughly confused. Why did he call her General? What is she talking about?
Backhand just nodded, putting her helmet back on. “You want to take point? You were kind of spacing out back there, Paladin. Might help you get centered. Run down the list of objectives?” She suggested.
“I must be worse than I thought if you noticed my thousand-yard stare.” Danse realized it was a sarcastic quip the second after the words left his mouth, and he felt horribly awkward.
That is, until there was an undignified guffaw from the knight. She clunked her whole forearm against his own in a makeshift nudge, still snickering. “How incredibly rude of you, Paladin! I’ve got bad eyesight, but it’s still there. Kinda’. Didn’t need twenty-twenty to see that you were deep in thought.”
“Knight Vega, I appreciate your attention to detail. And…” Danse hesitated, biting his lip. “And thank you for… humoring my wandering mind.”
“I’m not humoring anything. You’ve been through a lot recently and you’ve had no breathing room at all. You’re allowed to have time to process.” When she put it like that ...
Danse made a noise of acknowledgement. Backhand cleared her throat, stepping aside and letting him go ahead of her.
  …
Do me a favor and try to limit his time on board this rustbucket, okay? I don't know what's going on and it's not my place to ask. But Danse is a good man and he shouldn't be getting jerked around, Elder or no.
Ingram's words spurred Backhand to speak up. “Paladin Danse, sir?” When he turned to face her, she wished that he wasn’t wearing his helmet. “Sir, I meant what I said before.”
  “What?”
“When I said I was available if you needed someone to talk to. I’m serious. It’ll all be off the record, just between us. The only person I report to is you.” Backhand said firmly.
“And the elder.” Danse reminded her, his voice soft.
“Nope.” Backhand grinned, trying to lighten his obviously bleak mood. “Just you. You might answer to the elder, but I don’t.”
  “That’s tantamount to treason, Knight.”
  “He’s not a sovereign , for--”
“Elder Maxson’s orders are law in this chapter of the Brotherhood, Knight Vega.” Danse sounded like he was repeating the words from memory, clearly used to defending the young elder. “I suggest you cease your needlessly-flippant flouting of Brotherhood practices.”
Backhand knew she was on thin ice. “Of course, sir. I apologize. Forgive me my misstep.” She saluted loosely. “My previous military experiences were a little more lax. When out on patrol we spoke to each other and our superiors as equals. It was common to poke fun at the higher-ups, as well.”
“I wouldn’t begrudge you a joke or two, but not at the expense of the elder.” Danse replied tersely. “He works exceptionally hard to keep everything in line and running smoothly. I will not tolerate any disrespect towards him.”
“Understood, Paladin.” Her suspicion only thickened at Danse’s rebuke. What is Maxson doing to him? Normally, soldiers gleefully took the opportunity to joke about their superiors. But Danse was acting like it was a cardinal sin to so much as tease about the young elder. No wonder Ingram had told her to take her time. Danse was obviously kept on an incredibly short leash. The longer he was away from Maxson, the better.
They continued down the road in silence for nearly an hour before Danse finally sighed heavily. “Knight Vega, I must apologize again. You were not raised in the Brotherhood, it’s not as if you would know any better. My shortness of temper is unrelated to you.”
“It’s okay. You’re worried about Brandis, right?” Backhand asked. “A little scared, a little hopeful?”
“For being a relic of a bygone age, you are remarkably perceptive.” Backhand sputtered a little at being called a relic but Danse carried on gravely, “I am concerned about the state Brandis may be in when we reach him. If he is mentally compromised…dealing with a man who was Brotherhood but has lost his senses is not a task I take lightly.” He turned to her. “The younger recruits love Brandis. He was a father figure to a multitude of them.”
“You promised them you would bring him back.” She realized. Danse didn’t reply immediately, instead focusing his attention to the road in front of them.
“I could not feasibly promise anything.” He muttered, quiet enough that she was unsure if she was supposed to hear him. “It was not within my power to promise.”
“But you did anyway. On that slim hope that Brandis was alive and in one piece.” Backhand’s heart ached as she thought of the paladin trying to decide what to tell a group of young recruits, a group of kids .
“…Yes, Knight. I did.” Danse admitted after a long pause. “My motivations are irrelevant. I lied to children, because I…I cannot see the little ones as soldiers. They begged for news of Brandis and I had nothing to offer them except my word as a paladin.”
“That’s okay.” Backhand said simply. “We’re going to find him.”
“I suppose we are.” Danse sounded a little surprised. His shoulders straightened up. “One way or another.”
The asphalt had dissolved into nothing a mile back, leaving the two of them to continue trekking through the wilderness on the remains of the flattened earth that was once a road. Backhand was used to the booby-trapped state of everything at this point, so she didn’t even bat an eyelash when she heard the warning beep of a landmine.
Danse on the other hand stopped dead, helmet swinging rapidly back and forth as he tried to locate the mine before it went off. “Wait, Knight Vega-!” He began as she knelt, trailing off when he realized that she had deactivated the landmine. “Oh.”
“Impromptu bomb squad.” Backhand replied by way of explanation, tucking the salvaged mine into her satchel. “I got pretty good at working in gauntlets.”
His worry was touching all the same, the paladin letting out an awkward chuckle. “Hell, maybe you are lucky.” He shifted his weight nervously, pauldrons clattering in the relative stillness. “I should have known better than to think Brandis would make it easy. There’s a reason that old codger lived through everything.”
“You can either think I'm lucky, or you can just attribute it to the Sarge's bandanna like I usually do.” Backhand grinned, flexing her fingers experimentally. “Keep your eyes open for more and point them out if you see ‘em. These gauntlets are way better than the ones in my old suit. The mines won’t know what hit them.”
  “Affirmative, Knight Vega.”
With both of them on guard, their progress was slowed somewhat. But they found three more mines thanks to their diligence, and Backhand carefully deactivated every one before the timer ran out. She was so focused on scanning the ground that she almost walked into Danse’s back when the paladin stopped in the middle of the path. “Danse?” Inwardly, she cursed herself for not addressing him properly.
Danse didn’t even seem to notice though, his attention fixed on a bunker built into the side of the shallow valley they were in. “Recon bunker Theta…of course .” He hissed like he was talking to himself. “How could I have forgotten?”
“Is this the place?” Backhand asked, peering over his shoulder warily. The armored man nodded, already striding towards the door of the bunker.
  “It must be.”
  …
There was a terminal affixed to the outer concrete of the building and the paladin wasted little time painstakingly manipulating his huge gauntlets to press the correct keys on the keyboard. There was a loud clunk! when the lock on the door disengaged, but the door itself remained shut tight. Danse swore under his breath, firmly rapping his knuckles on the metal door. “Paladin Brandis!” He called. “Can you hear me, sir?”
“Paladin Danse? Are you sure you should-” Backhand started to ask, sounding nervous.
“ Quiet , Vega.” Danse ordered brusquely. To her credit, she immediately fell silent. He could still hear her shifting back and forth behind him though, and he wondered what on earth could have her so antsy. Surely it couldn’t be that she was worried about what Brandis might do? “ Paladin Brandis! If you’re in there-”
“Uh, D-Danse, I don’t think you should be so loud.”
“Vega, he will not hear me otherwise.” Danse, losing his limited patience, hammered his fist on the door. “ Brandis! ”
He heard a flurry of motion behind the door. “Who’s out there? How did you get that keycode? Never mind, never mind, just go away! I’m not letting you in here!”
Danse’s throat tightened at the elderly officer’s voice. “Paladin Brandis, sir! It’s me, Pal--"
In his distress over finding Brandis, Danse had forgotten to be wary of his surroundings. Heavy footsteps shook the ground and Backhand’s cry of surprise was the only warning he had, the paladin halfway through turning around when he was thrown against the door of the bunker by a thunderous blow from a behemoth’s improvised club. His shoulder protested violently at the rough treatment but Danse shrugged off the pain. He was so used to getting pummeled by the inside of his armor, he practically anticipated the bruises. He raised his head and got a good eyeful of the ugly brute inches from his face.
Suddenly he couldn’t breathe. There was a dull roaring in his ears, static pounding at his temples like a hammer while he stared at the creature and it stared right through him. Bloody spittle foamed around its mouth, eyes wide and pupils nothing but pinpricks. Nostrils flared to take in his scent.
This thing was once human . Danse felt sick to his stomach.
“ Paladin! ” Backhand yelled, firing a glancing shot off the beast’s shoulder that made it rear back. She was giving him time again, Danse realized dimly, his body refusing to cooperate as he remembered Dawes’ horrific death at the hands of a super mutant, remembered Cutler, Cutler like a punch to the face. And this mutant was a behemoth .
His laser rifle, unnamed as of yet, shook in one slack, trembling hand.
Backhand flanked the massive creature to end up back at his side, her pauldron clanking into his own. “Paladin!” She barked and Danse instantly straightened up, his grip snapping tight on his gun.
  “Ma’am!”
“Attack the enemy, soldier!” She sounded almost like Krieg, all righteous authority and fury inches from detonation.
An order, an order. Danse felt his body refocus on the here and now, banishing the horrific images of Dawes’ demise for later contemplation. “Yes ma’am!” He replied automatically, pulling the trigger and spraying laser shots into the behemoth’s massive chest. Backhand slung Righteous Authority back out of the way to dangle from its strap, her shotgun in her hands now. Danse was so used to the comparatively quiet report of laser weaponry that he actually flinched when she fired the shotgun. The drum-fed gun bolted to life at her touch, heavy slugs making the behemoth pause.
“ Eat hot lead, freak! ” Backhand shouted over the weapon, her words punctuating her shots. Danse got the feeling that pairing her with a Fat Man would make her nigh unstoppable.
Behind him, he heard something swing open. The door to the bunker! Brandis! “Knight Vega, maintain this position!” He demanded, not bothering to look back.
“A paladin…?” Brandis’ voice had an unfamiliar tremor in it.
“ Now , Vega!” Danse snapped.
“Sir, yes sir!” Backhand replied quickly, sliding into place where he had been a second ago. Her power armor frame filled the doorway as well as his had, and Danse brandished his rifle. The behemoth brayed deafeningly loud, seeming perturbed that its prey refused to cooperate.
“Not today, you giant freak!” Danse announced firmly.
  …
Backhand had barely caught a glimpse of a worn face with an unkempt beard peering around the side of the doorway before she moved herself in front of the opening. She braced her shotgun against her plating and continued to hammer away at the behemoth, shell after shell ripping the creature’s thick hide.
Danse kept up his own attack, a seemingly endless stream of mutant-related verbal abuse pouring from him in time with his laser shots. Backhand almost wished she could hear him clearer, certain that he was swearing a blue streak that could put Sergeant Cathan to shame.
That club swept low, knocked Danse’s legs out from beneath him. The paladin landed on his back with a grunt of pain and the behemoth (in a surprising show of intelligence) picked up one of the nearby boulders and dropped it onto Danse’s chest. Danse gritted out an infuriated curse and started struggling to lift the boulder, actuators in his armor shrieking under the strain when the behemoth started pushing down on the rock. Clearly it was either trying to crack Danse’s armor or crush the paladin inside it.
“Shut the door.” Backhand said calmly. There was the sound of fidgeting behind her. “It’s going to be alright. Just shut the door.”
At the loud clunk! of the door closing, the behemoth looked up from Danse. Backhand barely had a moment to inhale before she was snatched up by a massive hand, the creature roaring triumphantly.
“Knight Vega!” Danse shouted, the paladin still trying to shift the massive rock enough to get free.
Backhand squirmed desperately in the beast’s grip, arms pinned to her sides and her shotgun pointed towards the ground. Well kid, you gave it a good try . She pumped her trigger out of desperation, not sure if she even had any shells left, and blew a hole through the behemoth’s foot. The gargantuan mutant howled in pain, flinging her through the air when it toppled over. She hit the ground hard enough to lose consciousness briefly, her head slamming against the inside of the helmet.
When she blinked her eyes open again, all she could see was a power armor sabaton inches from her face. There was a muffled report to her right and super mutant skull fragments and brain tissue abruptly sprayed across her helmet visor. “ Tango down .” Danse snarled.
“Jesus.” Backhand muttered, her gauntlet clanking loudly against her helmet. “What a hit.”
“Are you injured, Knight?” Danse sounded like his teeth were clenched.
“Blacked out for a second is all. You alright?”
“That’s irrelevant. We need to see to Paladin Brandis.” Danse said sharply.
“It’s been so long since I’ve heard my name.” Said a quivering voice. “I imagine I’m hallucinating at this point. Going mad from seclusion.”
“It’s Danse, sir, Paladin Danse. Don’t you recognize me?” Danse asked, and Backhand was sure she wasn’t supposed to hear the uncertainty in his tone.
Danse pulled her to her feet and she took in the sight of the elderly man in badly-worn combat armor across from them. He was studying Danse hard, his eyes widening when Danse unfastened his helmet and took it off. “ Danse? You…is it really you?” Brandis asked, his voice still shaking. “Oh my God, is it true?”
“It’s me, sir.” Danse replied stiffly. “Knight Vega and I were tasked with reacquiring you. Elder Maxson-”
“Maxson? It’s his fault that I’m even…my squadron…” Brandis’ words grew disjointed, choked with emotion.
“ The elder believes that you are still a valuable asset to the war effort, Paladin Brandis.” If Danse had been stiff before, he was outright stony now.
Brandis, entertainingly, waved off Danse’s chastising attitude. “Yes yes, praise be to the elder. I suppose it’s you two that I ought to be thanking, though. After all, you’re the ones who risked life and limb to come find me.”
“It was Knight Vega’s first assignment as a member of the Brotherhood. She was honored beyond measure.”
“I don’t suppose she can talk , can she?” Brandis asked dryly. Backhand decided that she liked Brandis. “Why all this trouble for me, though? And so suddenly? I’ve been sending distress signals for years , Danse.”
“It was only through sheer luck and our acquisition of Knight Vega’s skillset that we even managed to signal the Brotherhood for support.” Danse replied curtly. “Over half of Recon Squad Gladius is dead, their lives claimed in the line of duty. Much like your own squadron.”
“Oh, Danse.” Brandis said helplessly. “It’s such a heavy burden to carry. Their lives…and Astlin , I know you were so fond of her.”
“She was a good soldier. Best marksman I ever knew.” Danse gritted out.
“I’ll bet she was an even better friend.” Backhand said tentatively.
  “She died with honor.”
“I don’t doubt it.” What the hell was going on? Danse sounded livid , the set of his shoulders visibly tense even through the power armor. A muscle ticked in his jaw.
“Danse, what does the Brotherhood even expect to get out of me? I’m too old, I’ve…I’ve been away for too long.” Brandis floundered.
  “Elder Max-”
“ Fuck Arthur, Danse!” Brandis exploded. “I’m asking you . What do you believe that the Brotherhood can get out of me?”
“Intimate knowledge of the Commonwealth.” Danse snapped. “You’re a survivor, Brandis, and your skills could be indispensable to our troops.”
“There’s nothing I could teach that the locals couldn’t Danse, you and Maxson know that.”
“Yes, and you’re not a filthy local. You’re Brotherhood.”
“Am I?” Brandis mused, glancing towards Backhand. “And I’ll assume that Knight Vega is one of the so-called ‘ filthy locals ’?”
Danse paused, his hand still up in the air in the beginning of an irritated gesture. Backhand barely kept her snort in check. “Knight Vega is a…special case.” He said finally.
“Typical Brotherhood. You’re filthy, you’re garbage, you’re nothing . And then, you’re a special case if you’re useful. Sound familiar, Danse?” Brandis grumbled. “Sleep with one eye open, Vega. Maxson is a little boy in a much larger man’s battle coat.”
“Paladin!” Danse barked. “There is no need for this insubordinate behavior in front of my ward!”
Brandis drew himself up to his full height (which, next to Danse in full armor, wasn’t exactly intimidating ) and jabbed his index finger into the larger paladin’s breastplate. “Don’t you dare speak to me about insubordination, Danse.” He hissed, his green eyes snapping with fury. “My squadron is dead because of Arthur and you still want to play Lancelot?”
“The Brotherhood will honor their memory.” Danse intoned dully.
“I’ll honor your memory if you keep this up, you damn fool.” Brandis growled. “No, no , I won’t go back to that madman. Better that I stay in isolation.”
“I’m relatively certain that you staying here isn’t an option.” Backhand interjected. “Look, if the elder is as tricky as you say, he’s not going to let you live out your days in peace. You’re Brotherhood, or you were once, and you know too much. It was the same with the army.” Danse looked horrified and Backhand hurried to finish, sure that her opening wouldn’t last. “You should be as close to him as possible, if anything. Make it more difficult for him to do something shady by keeping an eye on him.”
“Knight Vega! ” Danse sputtered indignantly.
But Brandis was nodding his head, looking intently at her. “Take that helmet off, Vega. I make it a point to know my allies.”
“Yes sir.” Backhand undid the helm and pulled it over her head, tucking it under her arm as an afterthought. “It’s an honor to meet you, sir.”
“You’re bleeding, Knight Vega.” Brandis pointed out after she saluted him and Danse fairly pounced on her, a huge finger looped through the pauldron on her shoulder jerking her around to face him. His gauntlet grazed her temple and she winced, grimacing when the metal returned brick-red.
“Just a scrape. I’ll be fine.” She insisted.
“I’m certain you will, Knight. How long have you been in Danse’s care?” Brandis asked genteelly.
“Ah, about t…two, three days?” Backhand answered cautiously.
  “But Danse said that-”
“Knight Vega did not immediately accept the offer. I imagine that our ranks did not strike her as particularly impressive.” Danse cut Brandis off, his tone incredibly bitter.
“It wasn’t that. I had other obligations to deal with.” Backhand corrected him, trying to be gentle. “You guys were in a worse situation than most, but my responsibilities took me elsewhere.”
“True, I did not…I apologize, Knight Vega. That was unnecessarily harsh of me.” Danse admitted after a second.
“Be still my heart. You got him to apologize! Never thought I’d see the day.” Brandis said with a hint of faked bewilderment. Backhand decided to keep the fact that Danse had apologized to her three times in the same day to herself. “Alright Danse, I’ll return to that rustbucket . But only because Knight Vega makes an excellent point.”
“Shall I signal us a vertibird?” Danse asked, his hands clenched tightly at his sides.
“ Ha! And let Maxson get the drop on me? No, no, it’ll be better for me to show up on foot, alone. Provided you two have been discreet, this place will still serve its purpose as a fallback point. I’ll meander for a few days and then make my way…hmm.” Brandis’ eyes rested on Backhand.
“Can I loan you my suit for your journey if you won’t accept an escort?” Backhand offered, following his train of thought. “My combat armor is functional and on standby. May I loan him my power armor, Paladin Danse sir?” She knew she was spreading it on thick, but Danse was obviously a stickler for protocol. “He is a senior ranking officer, and I…I mean if I’m with you, I’m sure it’ll be fine.” It couldn’t hurt to flatter him a bit.
Danse’s face pinked up endearingly and he cleared his throat. “I don’t see why not. If you hope to arrive safely Brandis, this is the least we can do. I would prefer, of course, to accompany you sir. But it’s your decision.”
“How gracious of you to permit an old man his preferences.” Brandis replied dryly. Backhand couldn’t stifle her hiccup of laughter and Danse ‘ harrumph ’ed, obviously embarrassed by her behavior.
“Knight Vega and I will busy ourselves with other tasks in the Commonwealth until you make your return to the Brotherhood, Paladin.” Danse said sternly. “You realize that my knight cannot return without her armor and empty-handed.”
  “Understood, Danse.”
Backhand fought the excited leap in her chest at the way Danse referred to her as ‘his’ knight, choosing instead to extract herself from her power armor and start strapping on her heavy combat gear. It’s only because he’s sponsoring you. Don’t be ridiculous , she scolded herself while she donned her breastplate and greaves.
“My thanks, Knight Vega. When you return, I’ll see that your armor is waiting in the bay for you.” Paladin Brandis promised, a heavy hand landing on her shoulder. “As well as a frazzled Maxson, if I play my cards right.” The old man grinned, his eyes still sad. “You two can help yourselves to anything in the bunker. I’ve collected some odds and ends over the years, so if you see something you need it’s yours.”
“Much obliged, sir.” Backhand said gratefully, struggling to recall what Preston had asked her to pick up in her travels. Well, we can always use more aluminum ...

Two Sides of the Commonwealth
Brotherhood of Steel. Why the hell they came to the Commonwealth was a mystery to most of the populous, but Fallon was getting real tired of the vertibirds and constant clanging of power armor as he searched the wreckage. It was stupid as all hell and getting really annoying.  Fallon kept seeing some... asshole in armor alot. Slick back blonde hair, chiseled jaw with a butt chin and angry eyes.  It was like he was stalking him or maybe he was patrolling the same area...  Clanking around like he owned the ruins, no one owned the ruins... well accept for maybe the mole rats and the mold. But this Brotherhood jerk kept stomping around and pushing him away from the ruins and acting like there was something to hide in the old police station. Fallon was getting tired of it. And so he was gonna confront the guy and stop him from...stopping him. Fallon stumbled around the wreckage, twisting the lead pipe in his hands, trying to see what was left that wasn’t taken by anyone else. Usually he was good at it, he knew what could be used for scrap.  He took note of the laser blasts in the wall, touching it with a gloved hand. Laser weapons... dangerous things. And the BOS seemed to only use them. If that guy turned sour, Fallon knew he wouldn’t survive a blast. Hell he barely knew how to take care of a normal bullet hole but one that was singed and burned was... a different thing all together. He began to hear the tell tale sign of the power armor’s hydraulics clambering around wreckage and crushing rubble under their feet. Fallon rounded the corner, smiling as he saw that it was that grumpy soldier. “Ah hey  if it ain’t tall, blonde and loud as all shit. Still here?” The blonde BOS soldier grumbled, adjusting the laser rifle in his hands. “You... how dense are you that you can’t get ‘leave and don’t come back’“ “Ah you know... a man’s gotta eat and you know I just love that scowl.”  “I need you to leave, this is area is under-” “Watch of the Brotherhood of Steel yeah I got it tattooed on my brain by now. I just wanted to ask uh.. why the hell have you been here for the last two weeks. Doesn’t the Brotherhood have something better to do or have you still not found whatever the hell your looking for? Cause listen I wanna check this place out and I need to eat.” “That is classified information to civilians.” The man growled, beginning to walk away only to have Fallon follow behind him like a parasite. “Then just... monitor me while I look around! Come on the tin can squad can’t fucking lock a place down how is that even fair? Whatever your looking for here can’t be that important it’s a run down police station! You have SO MUCH, let the little guys have something.” Fallon complained, grabbing the man’s arm only to be pushed away. “You have no right to ask or grab me...” The man lifted his rifle, aiming it at Fallon. “Why do you come back, do you want to get shot? What makes you think that I won’t shoot you, or are you just that stupid and suicidal?”  Fallon raised his eyebrows and backed up a bit, giving a bit of a smile. “Well... uh... I meant i’ve done this how many times and you haven’t shot me yet despite my bullshit, so that either means that you don’t want to kill a civilian, you love me, or you’ve been told not to kill anyone. Either way I feel like im in the clear.” The man looked over Fallon and lowered the rifle, closing his eyes and muttering something under his breath. “Then I suppose if I can’t get rid of you I should just... monitor you. What’s your name scavenger?” “Fallon Campbell.” “Fallon... very well. You may address me as Paladin King.” “KING. Holy shit is that your real last name or are you brotherhood of steel fuckers just that conceited!?” Fallon bellowed, grabbing his stomach and laughing hard as King’s nostril flared. “It’s just my last name... and you’re already pushing your luck. Do you do this with other paladins or have you just run into me?” “Eh it’s just kinda you in all honesty... I didn’t uh run into others, kinda scared of the others but there’s something about you. Probably the fact that you have those kind eyes. and restraint to not shoot me.” Fallon stepped over a few broken desks and stared at the symbol on King’s power armor, frowning. “Why the hell did you join those assholes? They’re just a bunch of bigots that probably love the smell of their own farts.” “A real question behind the snark hm?” King muttered, looking around the place before exhaling loudly. “It’s not as simple as it would seem. Didn’t use to be like that. In... honesty I don’t like the direction that the Brotherhood has taken, but I can’t do anything about it” Fallon bent down and began to search through some drawers of a file cabinet, turning a bit and giving a chuckle. “What you don’t like that guy in the sweet ass coat that looks like smoker’s lung incarnate. What’s his name... Max...Ma... Mason?” “Elder Maxson.” “Yeah him... not a fan?” “Not... particularly. I was around before he came into power. Things were simpler back then. But now it seems like he’s... gone a bit mad with power. He has ... good intentions but the way he handles it, it’s wrong. Too controlling. Too... “  He trialed off, rolling his shoulders and looking away. “Doesn’t saying this shit just put a bulls-eye on your head? You think you wouldn’t tell some ‘dirty scav’ but here you are, telling me some deep dark secrets. Next thing you know you’ll wanna talk about your troubled childhood.”  “I’m allowed to say my piece. I’ve been no stranger to that and i’ve taken the brunt of the blow for saying what I believe, specially around other members of the Brotherhood of Steel who lick the very ground Maxson walks on. I’m not scared of them. Someone needs to speak up instead of being a mindless drone. I didn’t come to be in the Brotherhood for what we’re doing right now. I came for protection and helping America, suppressing technology like nuclear developments.” Fallon was quiet, shoving a few things into his bag and looking over at the Paladin. He shifted the bag and stood up, walking over to him and beginning to walk, scratching the thin stubble on his face. “Damn... why don’t you leave? You seem to not agree with alot of shit...why not leave?”
“Because I believe in the overall cause, and I believe that’ll get better. We just have the wrong man in charge. That and I owe it to the Brotherhood. Without them I’d be dead. So I feel like there’s a life debt I owe to them.” “Life debt... ha... life debts are shit. No one here lives as long to fill out a life debt. Just live and pay what you can in the moment. You spend enough time on ground and not in that big blimp you realize how quick things go. You promise a girl you’ll be back a few days later with some gear and you find out that as soon as you left, she got mauled by ferals, children... they...” Fallon cleared his throat and tightened his fists. “You don’t live long is what I’ve learned. The fact that I wake up every day is a miracle to me. Just do what you can. So fuck the life debt. It’s a dog eat dog world baby, you either jump or you get pushed.” The two walked in tandem for a while, chatting quietly about their thoughts.  It was weird but this tin can wasn’t as bad as he thought he was. Just seemed to be in a weird situation. Least he was nice enough to pick up some junk. When  he finally decided that enough was enough he began to head to the exit, giving a small smile at the Paladin. “So... you still gonna be hanging around here tin man?” “Unfortunately.” “Good. Maybe i’ll see you around? Date night i’ll bring a few brews, you ever try Borov’s Moonshine, knocks you out. Be my treat I know the guy who makes it.”  He said, giving a grin as he backed up. The paladin was a bit weirded out but paused, giving a small smile in return. “...Fine. As long as you don’t do anything stupid I’ll... make an acceptation Fallon. Since I can’t get rid of you.” Fallon bumped his fist in the air, laughing loudly “Aw dude sweet, i’m pals with a Brotherhood of Steel Paladin!” He fell against the door and stumbled out of the station, the paladin hearing a little clatter as he got back up and walked away. Idiot. But it was nice to learn about civilians lives... more then some of the BOS would do. It was nice to bitch about Maxson too without getting side eyed. Maybe it’ll be the start of a strange new friendship.

Journal 49
The trip east was fairly quiet, at least concerning my companions. The super mutants, raiders, Gunners, and ferals that make up Boston’s populace were as violent as ever. Ada is formidable, despite her convictions that her defensive capabilities should be improved. Valentine saved Cait from a Gunner’s missile, which she repaid by blasting her way through a pack of ferals that took him by surprise.
“Your contract’s with Holmes, not me!” he scolded her.
“Yer boyfriend and that wicked sword of his are fuckin’ fine!” The last feral fell, “Damn shamblers give me the creeps. There, now we’re even, you and me.”
Valentine was puzzled, “Even?”
“For knockin’ me out o’ the way of that tattooed cretin’s missile. I keep tellin’ Holmes, I don’t like owin’ debt to anyone.”
“I’ll keep that in mind. Word of advice though, it’s bad manners to steal cigarettes off the guy you’re supposedly saving.”
Cait laughed, and tossed him the pack.
I decided that rather than attack General Atomics immediately, we should first stop by the Castle, as it was just south of the factory and the sun was already setting. We could rest and prepare, and alert the Minutemen to the Mechanist’s threat. As it turned out, the Minutemen were already aware of the hostile robots roaming the Commonwealth.
“General!” Ronnie Shaw greeted us as we entered, “Sure do have impeccable timing.”
That likely wasn’t a good sign. “Do I?”
“Just missed the Brotherhood vertibird dropping a messenger by our front door. Said their scouts had noticed you coming this way.” She held up a holotape, clearly annoyed if not offended that the Brotherhood would be spying on the area. “This is for you.”
I took the tape, labeled “For General Holmes Only” in block letters. “Before I deal with this, the reason I’m here is--”
“Robots.”
I blinked, “Yes.”
Shaw nodded, “Got word from Sanctuary, we’re scrambling reinforcements to every checkpoint and settlement near where they’ve been spotted. Can’t reinforce everywhere yet, spread us too thin, but we can at least bolster the known threat zones.”
“Ah. How did Sanctuary--”
“One of our provisioners was attacked, we let Sanctuary know. Then word came in from MacCready about robots at the Ironworks, and Colonel Garvey got right to work alerting everyone to keep an eye out for robots built from scrap terrorizing folks. Good commander, that Colonel of yours.”
I smiled, “I hope to justify his faith in me to be the same. We have a plan to find the person responsible for these robots. Ada,” I gestured to her, “believes that we will find some in the General Atomics factory north of here, and they might provide us with the information we need.”
“It’s a start at least.” Shaw glanced at the holotape in my hand, "Your quarters are as you left them."
I thanked her, and took the holotape to the quarters reserved for the General. My companions followed, Valentine because he was concerned, Cait because she was bored, and Ada because she had nowhere else to go. I played the tape on my Pip Boy.
“This is Elder Maxson speaking to General Holmes. My reason for contacting you is two-fold. First, the situation between our organizations is reaching a breaking point. This truce cannot survive indefinitely. As I have no desire to declare war on the Minutemen, yet, I invite you to discuss the matter with me. Second, I have no doubt the Minutemen are aware of the hostile robots that have appeared in the Commonwealth. My Scribes have been unable to track their origin. You seem to have an uncanny ability to find that which is hidden. Therefore, I request your presence on the Prydwen to discuss the new threat to both Brotherhood and Minutemen forces in the Commonwealth, and to negotiate new terms between us to keep the peace. Bring your second and third in command with you, as a token of goodwill and to ensure that there is no miscommunication in the chain of command. I insist.”
The recording ended.
"If Maxson thinks you're delivering Danse on a silver platter," Valentine said, "he's flipped his lid."
"Having Preston and I there adds a level of security for Danse," I pointed out.
"Unless he wants to wipe out the whole Minutemen command at once."
"He knows the Castle's artillery would destroy the Prydwen at the first sign of foul play. I'll contact Sanctuary first thing in the morning and see if Danse can shed some insight on his former commander's intentions."
Danse and Preston’s reactions were as I expected when I told them about Maxson’s request.
“With all due respect, General,” Preston said over the radio, “what the fuck?”
“He is insistent that both you and the Lt. Colonel are present at the negotiations,” I said.
“No. There's--”
“Garvey,” Danse scolded, but Preston spoke over him.
“--no way this isn’t a trap!”
“With all three top ranking officers on board the Prydwen, Maxson is assured that the Minutemen will not strike at the Brotherhood,” Danse explained. “It’s a power play, a bit of arrogance perhaps, but it is not a trap. He will expect us to take precautions. If we do not contact the Minutemen after a set amount of time, then the Castle opens fire on the Prydwen. If Liberty Prime takes one step outside the airport, then the Castle opens fire on the Prydwen. Maxson will not risk his flagship being destroyed, especially not while he's still on it.”
I could hear Preston’s frown as he said, “I hate everything about this. This is not a good idea.”
“Good idea or not,” I said, “attending without you two will be taken as an insult, and could be the slim excuse Maxson needs to justify swift action.”
“Understood, General,” Danse said, ignoring Preston’s sigh, “We’ll meet you at the airport seventy-two hours from now.”
“Thank you, Lieutenant Colonel.”
It was roughly a two day walk to the airport from the Castle, which gave us the day to investigate the General Atomics factory. We wasted no time; Ada wasn't certain what information we might find on the Mechanist's robots, if they were still in the factory, but it was the only lead we had and I had no intention of letting it slip through our grasp.
The Mechanist's robots were there, in greater strength than I'd expected. I was glad to have extra assistance. Cait barrelled through, recklessly but effectively blasting modified Mr. Handy's and eyebots out of the air while Ada's laser fire was a welcome addition to Valentine and my bullets against the robots on the ground.
Each eyebot was broadcasting a message:
"Attention, people of the Commonwealth! I, the Mechanist, have come to bring about an age of peace. Do not be alarmed. These robots are your allies, your protectors, and they will not rest until the Commonwealth is saved. Together we will restore justice and bring about the dawn of a new age."
"Can't these things shut up!" Cait shouted.
"I think the Mechanist and I have very different definitions of the word 'saved,'" Valentine added.
"He can't actually mean any of that rot," Cait continued. "If he does, he's loony."
"Considering he built an army of scrapbots," Valentine grunted as his fight with what once may have been a protectron went to fisticuffs, "I'd say he's probably pretty nuts!"
Then the robobrain armored like a tank appeared. "Aim for the brain!" I shouted, dodging a swing of its tesla-coil arm. Ada and I fired as Cait and Valentine did their best to keep the other robots still standing occupied.
With a shudder and a crackle of electricity across its surface, the robobrain fell. Tense silence settled. When it was clear no more robots would be coming around any corners, we relaxed.
"What the hell is that thing?" Cait asked.
"It's called a robobrain," I said, "though I've never seen one so weaponized before." I'd only ever seen them inside the Vault near Far Harbor, and those were much smaller compared to this one.
She stepped closer, "Is that… is that a person's brain in there?"
I nodded, "It is."
"That's disgustin'."
"I agree."
“According to my data banks,” Ada said, “the robobrain was considered one of the most technologically superior robots ever constructed, but the model never reached full production status.”
"Wonder where this one came from," Valentine said.
Cait huffed, already bored by the conversation, "So how're we going to find the Mechanist with these heaps of junk?"
"We look for clues," I said, and got to work.
Ada, Valentine, and I searched the robots while Cait paced the room.
Valentine whispered to me, "Holmes, that woman has more psycho in her than is healthy."
"There's a healthy dosage of psycho?"
"You know what I mean. She took a hit, took a stimpak after snapping her arm back in place, and then took a second psycho for good measure. I'm amazed her heart hasn't exploded."
I sighed, "There's nothing I can do about it now, and I doubt she'll welcome conversation, especially with the state she's in."
"The crash ain't gonna be great either."
"What do you want me to do?"
He was quiet a moment, shaking his head. "I don't know. She's done her job so far, I'll give her that much, but she's gonna fall apart soon.”
"Are you detectives looking or flirting?" Cait shouted from across the room. "Hell of a lot more quiet chat than discovery goin' on."
"Jealous?" Valentine called back.
"Of you?"
“Enough,” I interrupted. “Ada, any luck?”
“I have not yet discovered a significant indicator of origin,” Ada reported.
“I’m going to look over the robobrain again,” Valentine said.
I approached Cait. “Valentine tells me you were injured?”
She was offended, “Stimpak patched me up just fine.”
“Good. And are you supplied for the trip north?”
"What?"
“Hey, Ada,” Valentine said, “My robot anatomy is a little rusty, but does this look like something interesting?”
He held up a device, which Ada examined. “Impressive technology. If my analysis is correct, this is a specialized radar beacon. I suspect it's how the Mechanist was keeping track of the robobrain. Thank you, Mr. Valentine, this may be exactly what we needed.” Ada turned to me, “As the next logical step, I need you to install this beacon within me so we can use it to our advantage.”
“Install it?” I admit, I balked at the prospect. Modifying weapons and armor, even building traps and turrets were one thing. Installing a radar beacon into a sophisticated robot seemed to be something else entirely.
“You'll need to use a robot workbench to ensure proper installation,” Ada explained. “I have the schematics. Do you want to return to the Castle to build it?”
“No,” I said, “not the Castle. There is an engineer out west who would be just the man for the job, and the location far enough away from the Brotherhood’s patrols to avoid attention.”
We decided that Valentine and Ada would leave for Sanctuary and tell Sturges about the robot workbench Ada’s creator invented, while Cait and I would make our way north to meet Danse and Preston at the airport. Valentine wasn’t thrilled with the plan, but he didn’t have a better suggestion, either.
I had already told Ms. Shaw about my meeting with Maxson before we left. As Danse suggested, I gave her explicit instructions for action to take should anything seem amiss. And so Cait and I started the walk north to the Prydwen.

2 4 12 19 29 30 46 for the fallout oc meme (:
aaa ty for the ask! :D 2. Which faction(s) did they join and which did they destroy? Why? Main: Ashley mainly serves as the General of the Minutemen, but she also goes on numerous missions with the railroad as well in order to find/protect any lost synths that might be at risk after the events that unfolded in the commonwealth. As far as the Brotherhood of Steel goes, Ashley stays out of their way and they stay out of hers. She  decided against starting any sort of fight with them, instead opting for Danse to face Maxson for the title of Elder. It broke her heart to see how Shaun had turned out, as well as seeing how much amazing technology there was in the Institute that could’ve been used to make life above the surface so much better for everyone, but in the end she decided that they were too much of a threat to keep around. Far Harbor: It was nice to get out of the Commonwealth, but the trip to Far Harbor turned out to be a huge headache for Ashley. She didn’t exactly appreciate how DiMA went about things, but in the end she ultimately decided to go with his plan to keep peace between the 3 factions. Nuka World: Long story short, Ashley decided to play raider briefly, before gaining all of the raider leader’s trust only to kill them all in their sleep. The last thing she needed was a large gang of raiders fucking up all of her hard work building up all of those settlements.
4. Give us a summary of their backstory.Ashley lived with her aunt and uncle in a stereotypical small rural town as a young girl. Her father had been thrown in prison for apparently murdering a judge, and her mother shortly after decided that she couldn’t raise her on her own. At the age of 21, she decided to spontaneously move out to California, eager to ditch the country life and move to the city. She quickly realized what a huge mistake this was between the ‘culture shock’ and the rediculous price of everything there. She quickly ran out of money and had no choice but to work as a live in maid for an older couple, and shortly after began moonlighting as a bartender at the husband’s bar as well. Long story short, the couple were terrible in their own ways, and Ashley began stashing away as much money as possible to get away from the both of them.As luck would have it, the military base that Nate had been stationed at wasn’t far from the bar. He had already been somewhat of a regular at the bar, but started visiting much more frequently when Ashley started working there. The two of them began growing closer over the next few months as they spoke almost every single night. Nate began to grow concerned as she told him about her current situation in California, between the wife  constantly making her life hell and the husband making her seriously uncomfortable and feeling unsafe. After hearing that they were barely paying her anything on top of everything else going on, Nate made the decision to sneak her out of the house in the middle of the night and quickly move her over to Boston before anyone caught on.A year had finally passed by the time the two had finally decided to get married. The newlyweds’ hapiness was short lived, however, when Nate was suddenly shipped out to Anchorage. After that, the two communicated daily through letters to each other. Ashley shortly after took a job at the Corvega plant to keep herself from going insane and stressing herself out until Nate finally came back home. When Nate finally returned, she quickly became pregnant with Shaun and stepped down from her position at Corvega in order to spend more time with Nate and to prepare for motherhood up until the day the bombs finally fell.
12. What are they most insecure about? She doesn’t exactly have the best confidence in the world (although her time in the wastes has definitely changed that). One of her main insecurities would probably be her body and how she looks in general. She emerged from the vault as a platinum blonde housewife with a 'Pinup Friendly’ body as Nate liked to jokingly call it. This earned her a lot of stares from everyone around her, as the common look around was malnourished and dirty. She later ditched her vault suit and colored her hair burgundy, hoping that it would make her look more intimidating and discourage people from staring as much.
19. What natural alignment are they? (ex. Lawful Good, Chaotic Evil)Ashley is definitely more on the Chaotic Good side, constantly wanting to do the right thing and protect everyone around her, although she’s not afraid to bash in a few skulls or terrorize a person or two if she absolutely has to.
29. What do they find most attractive in others? Name at least one psychological and physical trait. (doesn’t have to be romantic attraction)She isn’t too hung up over physical traits, but honesty and confidence are definitely two things that attract her to others.
30. Do they flirt often? How easily do they fall in love? It’s definitely not easy for Ashley to fall in love again after losing Nate, but she does eventually end up finding it again. As far as flirting goes, she doesn’t go out of her way or even try to. She can be a bit oblivious to how she comes off to others, and is occasionally mistaken for flirting with someone when she’s really just trying to be nice to them.
46. How do they sleep? Are they picky about where and how or can they sleep basically anywhere?Ashley definitely prefers sleeping in an at least somewhat intact bed, especially one with very few stains in it, but beggars can’t be choosers in the wasteland. She carries a Vault-Tec sleeping bag with her as well as several blankets to put over any mattress that she comes across while out travelling. If sleeping on a mattress or in a bed, she usually drifts off pretty quickly and sleeps pretty still and peacefully to the point where her current companion(s) would occasionally check to see if she is still alive and breathing. If she is particularly sleep deprived, she might occasionally (although very rarely) snore, drool, or talk in her sleep, which can be both hilarious or annoying depending on who she’s with. She usually doesn’t sleep very well if she’s just using her sleeping bag. She’ll either toss and turn all night failing to get comfortable or she’ll just give up and choose to keep watch over her companion(s) for the rest of the night.I’m sorry this took so long to answer x.x my writing is terrible RIP

Mark twenty-eight nuclear warheads .
Backhand squinted down at the paper, up at Ingram and then back at the paper. "Oh, is that all?" She asked sarcastically. "What, you don't want me to grab milk and eggs while I'm out?"
" Easy , smartass." Proctor Ingram laughed. "We know the general location. All we need is for you to sweep the area, get rid of hostiles and secure the payload. Simple!"
"Yeah? Where's the general location then?" Backhand challenged.
Ingram spread the map out on the desk, tapping the area circled in the lower left hand corner. "It's a military site, Prescott I think? One of our scribes was able to triangulate it using the documents you and Danse scooped from that veteran housing development."
"In the Glowing Sea." Backhand groaned. "I had kind of hoped to never need to go back out there." I'd better start getting some damn perks for all the legwork I'm doing , she thought uncharitably.
" Theirs not to make reply, theirs not to reason why, theirs but to do and die ." Ingram quoted at her, laughing again when Vega grumbled under her breath. "C'mon Vega, you're like the Brotherhood's poster child for Commonwealth recruitment. Where's your Ad Victoriam spirit? You have to spearhead this, if only for the eventual publicity."
"Ah, the press ." Backhand retorted. "Who's my backup, then?"
"Your sponsor, obviously! Though I'm guessing after this you'll be welcomed into the fold for real." Ingram mused, her expression thoughtful. "Danse seemed better when I saw him last. I think the time off the Prydwen has really done him some good."
Vega tried to hide her flush of pride, quickly asking, "Other than the lack of big boomers, how is Prime looking?"
"Pretty good, I'd say! It was a real stroke of luck that you got us Madison back, even if working with her makes me want to set my pubes on fire." Ingram answered frankly. "We're both too stubborn to function well together, but sometimes we can shut up and actually get shit done. Those are the times I believe we might have a shot here."
"Your confidence is overwhelming." Backhand said dryly.
The other woman gave her a lopsided grin. "I've seen too many ops go south to put all my eggs in one scientist's basket, Vega. At least we'll have the numbers of the Minutemen on our side in case Prime can't get off the ground."
"Has Quinlan had any luck getting that information unscrambled? My buddy hit a dead end pretty early on with the encryption, and he's dying to know whether he actually helped or whether it's all junk data."
Truthfully Sturges had gotten much further than either of them had expected (the fact that he knew there was data on the tape at all was a miracle), but Ingram didn't exactly have to know that. The older woman's sigh didn't sound overly promising though.
"Nothing yet. He and his scribes have been working as close to around the clock as they can get without disrupting Cade across the way. It's always a process in close quarters." The proctor hummed. "With any luck, maybe a few more days?"
"I'll keep my fingers crossed." Backhand promised. "I know it'll probably all be considered confidential information, but still."
  …
  "No."
" Excuse me, Paladin?" Arthur snarled.
Danse stood by the door to the elder's quarters, his posture perfect. "I said no, Elder Maxson." He repeated. "I will not be engaging with you any longer."
"Dare I ask what has brought about this insubordination? " The younger man queried.
Danse stood firm. "This is not insubordination, Elder Maxson. You have exploited me long enough and I refuse to let you continue."
"I'll have you exiled, Paladin." Maxson threatened. "One word from me and your status goes up in smoke. We are on the brink of war with the Institute and you wish to weaken our ranks? You're a good soldier, Danse. Don't make me send you away."
Danse shook his head. His hands, clasped at the small of his back, trembled nervously until he clenched them into fists. "I'm sorry, Elder Maxson, but I refuse to allow you to manipulate or abuse me any further."
"Are you disobeying a direct order from your elder, Danse?"
  "I am simply-"
A knock on the door to Maxson's quarters interrupted whatever Danse had intended to say, and a split second later Knight Vega poked her head around the door. "Apologies, Elder Maxson." The woman said with a salute. "I was unaware that you two were having a discussion. Paladin, we are departing in ten minutes."
Arthur jerked his head to the side to indicate that Elizabeth should leave. " Get out , Vega." He barked.
She hesitated and Danse closed his eyes in defeat, knowing that he was screwed the second she departed.
He heard the door close and Arthur was abruptly on him, one hand gripping the paladin's throat to force Danse's head against the wall as he tore at the zipper of the other man's jumpsuit. "You are going to fuck me, Danse, so I suggest you warm up to the idea." Maxson hissed against his ear.
Danse felt nauseous, dirty as Arthur pawed at him. Say no, damn it! What's wrong with you?
The only warning either man got was a barely-audible knock on the door before Paladin Brandis barged in. Arthur whirled on the older man, murder in his eyes for the barest second. " Brandis! " Maxson roared. "How many-"
"I have sixteen new aspirants seeking to rise to knight or scribe, Elder Maxson!" Brandis waved a sheaf of papers at the younger man. "I also have seven squires who believe they are ready for evaluation to ascend to aspirant. Oh, was I interrupting something?" He remarked, blinking in a befuddled manner at the clearly-furious elder.
Maxson stared back at the older paladin, his chest heaving. "Don't think for one goddamn second that I don't know exactly what you're up to, you old fool!" Arthur's blue eyes were fairly crackling with rage.
"Me? The only thing I'm up to is trying to get this paperwork taken care of." Brandis protested blandly. "You're so suspicious , Maxson. It won't do you any favors." Brandis seemed to finally notice Danse standing there slackjawed and the older paladin began to scold, "zip up your uniform, Danse! We're a military , not a frathouse!" His eyebrows raised, all but begging Danse to take the opening and flee.
Danse gulped and floundered to apologize, zipping up his suit. He caught the barest glimpse of Maxson's thunderous glare before he turned tail and bolted. The cowardice burned at him, but really, what else could he do?
He shouldered past Vega lurking just outside the door, and stormed down the catwalk to the grease pit without a word.
Their aerial approach to the Glowing Sea was silent and riddled with turbulence. Danse could identify the territory of the area from a fair distance away, the way the radiation tinged the sky to a sinister yellowed bruise a sure indication.
Waypoint Echo was precariously positioned on the very edge of the Glowing Sea. Danse felt a fair amount of trepidation as he and Knight Vega approached the area after they disembarked the vertibird. He had never ventured into the Glowing Sea, but he supposed there was no time like the present.
He was glad to at least find a familiar face, although Haylen didn't appear happy to see him and Vega. The scribe looked tense, wary. Danse supposed he could understand that; the post was much less than favorably placed. They were only just outside the heavy haze of radiation, and the radstorms weren't inclined to remain stationary for too long. To say nothing of the deadly creatures that tended to emerge from the area and wander north. Waypoint Echo was not a hospitable assignment by any stretch of the imagination.
His scribe had never searched for the easy jobs. Danse felt a wave of pride for the woman he had sponsored back when she was nothing but an initiate. Haylen had rolled with the punches and become an admirable scribe, a loyal friend and an incredible asset to any team she joined. "Scribe Haylen!" He greeted her warmly with a salute. "Ad Victoriam. Another day, another assignment."
"Paladin Danse," Haylen addressed him through gritted teeth, oddly not returning his salute. "Can I get a word with you before you depart? It's urgent." She was already grabbing his arm before he even nodded, the scribe leading him away from the camp. Knight Vega was listening intently while the other field scribe briefed her on their current situation and any observations they might have made.
"Scribe Haylen, is something amiss?" The paladin asked, a little concerned once Haylen had moved him out of earshot of the encampment.
The petite woman whirled on him, looking more furious than Danse had ever seen her. " How could you not tell me?" She hissed.
Danse stared at her, bewildered. "I...what do you mean, Haylen?"
"Don't play dumb with me, Danse! Quinlan got the list decoded. He knows . Maxson knows. Hell, maybe even Vega knows! Maybe she's leading you into a trap right now." Haylen took hold of his gauntlet once more. "Danse, you have to run ."
"Haylen, I'm afraid I have no idea what you're talking about." Danse replied, thoroughly puzzled. What would Quinlan decoding the Institute information have to do with him?
Haylen's fingernails scraped at the worn red-orange paint denoting his rank as she gripped down even tighter. "Danse, you...do you really not…" she appeared to be trying to ask something, but couldn't seem to amass the words.
"Take your time. Get your mind straight." Danse said kindly. "Whatever it is, I'll hear you out."
She sobbed suddenly, her small frame rattled by the outburst. "Oh Danse , I'm so sorry." She whispered.
  …
Backhand lingered on the edge of the camp, half-watching Haylen appear to argue with the paladin about something. Trouble in paradise? she wondered, turning the distress pulser for their endeavor over in her hands before she tucked it away in her satchel.
"Man, I guess whatever Rhys passed along to her earlier really has her in a twist." One of the other scribes commented. "I dunno' if I've ever seen her this heated."
Danse thundered back towards the camp, leaving Haylen to call his name plaintively. "Ready to continue our mission, soldier?" He gritted the words out at Backhand.
Backhand raised an eyebrow at his sudden change of mood, but then recalled what she had interrupted earlier that morning and reasoned that he had more than every right to be a little testy. The woman simply nodded and fell into step behind him. "See you guys soon!" She said to the soldiers occupying Echo, waving in farewell. Haylen didn't wave back, the scribe looking wholly dejected.
  Was she crying?
"Hey Danse, is Haylen alright? She seemed upset." Backhand inquired after they had been walking for several minutes.
"We had a discussion." was all Danse said in reply. His tone didn't exactly encourage further questioning, so Backhand decided that she should probably, maybe , just this once, not attempt to converse.
"Sorry, didn't mean to pry." She mumbled.
"I'm certain you didn't. But we can't afford to be distracted on this mission." Danse instructed firmly. "There's too much at stake, Knight Vega."
  "Oh, absolutely!" Backhand agreed.
"I need you to take point during this engagement, as you're the one who knows where we're going." Danse paused, letting her come up alongside him. "We can't lose sight of what's important. If we do, the Institute has already won."
The paladin, in spite of his words, seemed out of sorts. Spacey , even. His grip on his rifle was uncharacteristically slack, especially considering how hostile their environment was.
Backhand was reminded of his behavior during their search for Brandis and she said as much, prodding the paladin to respond. "I'm fine. Just...thinking," he muttered. "I apologize, I'm not very good at following my own orders. I lecture you on distraction while also being distracted."
"After this campaign is over, I vote for a little R and R. The proverbial run ashore. Sound good to you?" Backhand asked, tilting her head.
Danse cleared his throat. "I wish I had your optimism." He said plainly. "Once the Institute hears we have these munitions, assuming the bombs are even here in the first place, it will be all-out war. I'm not so foolish to think they'll surrender or melt back into the shadows under the threat of our superior firepower. They will demand a live test." The paladin gestured vaguely around him at the blasted landscape. "I know for a fact that Maxson won't stop until the Institute is nothing but a fractured husk. The idea that there are innocent people down there, good people who will be slaughtered with the bad…" He shook his head.
"It's sobering." Backhand murmured in agreement, not sure why she was surprised by the paladin's display of humanity. She had been in and out of the Institute over the last few weeks, building a rapport with the various scientists and synths and also passing along pertinent information to the Brotherhood. All the while Shaun pressured her to take over his position, " before I am gone, Mother. " She hadn't known that Danse was actually listening to her field reports.
"It's grotesque entrapment. People who wanted a better life, people who wanted to help the world, people who thought they were helping." Danse sounded disgusted and strangely upset. "Bodies snatched in the middle of the night, or lured in by the lie of bettering mankind!" He had turned to her as he ranted, his pauldrons rising and falling rapidly from the force of his body against the frame of his armor. "He's your son , Vega, how could he--"
"He's not my son anymore." Backhand cut him off, stung by his heated words. "The man who leads the Institute may be related to me through biology, but he is not my son, Paladin Danse." She heaved a sigh, looking away. "I guess he really never was, in a way. His father...his father told me he wanted children. Once I got pregnant, though, it was like the reality of it became too much for him." Her laugh was a sad noise, mirthless and hollow. "And if he thought it was too much, imagine how I felt. I didn't really have a lot of agency in the matter, I just wanted to make him happy and when I realized that not even that could make him happy, I kind of lost it. Hence the divorce and stuff. I loved that baby more than anything in the world, but I know that I wasn't a great mom. I was in way over my head. Scared. Terrified . Alone. And then...then he was taken from me. Just like that."
"Knight Vega, I...forgive my outburst, please. I didn't mean to imply that any of this is your fault." Danse mumbled. "I simply...I-I mean, I see you, the way you interact with the people of the Commonwealth, and I can't wrap my head around the fact that someone even tangentially related to you could be capable of such...heinous machinations."
"I'm a byproduct of the Great War, Paladin Danse." Backhand smiled thinly. "A relic from times of pretend plenty. The Institute raised Shaun, shaped him into their perfect leader. He doesn't understand the struggles of the real world. He can't understand the ugliness of war, not like how someone who lived through it can."
"You would think the perfect leader would want what's best for his troops." Danse remarked.
"He's dying , Danse. The only reason he thawed me out again is because he's dying, and the Institute wanted me to take over." Backhand confided, scoffing a little. "Can you even believe that shit? His board of directors really thought my altruistic, bleeding-heart ass would take over their body-snatching extravaganza. Hell, they seem confused every time I tell them to fuck off."
  "You turned them down?"
The bewilderment in his tone caught Backhand by surprise. " Yeah , Danse. Obviously."
"The promise of returning the Commonwealth to its former glory wasn't enough to sway you?" The paladin queried, his voice laden with that rare sarcasm he employed.
Backhand chuckled wryly. "Did you forget the part where I've seen the Commonwealth at the peak of that former glory? It wasn't better. It was just a little less irradiated." She thumped her pauldron against his own after a moment. "Hey, I'm with you, okay? No matter what happens, we'll get through this and enjoy that sweet off-time." She promised. "I know you can't see, but I'm definitely smiling under here."
"I can tell." Danse lapsed into contemplative silence, and Backhand wished she could see his expression. Something, anything to clue her in as to what he was thinking about.
They passed a crashed plane, the trail of wreckage from it extending well past Backhand's limited field of view. Danse tuned into its distress signal like a reflex, and Backhand half-listened to the mayday broadcast of Skylanes one-six-six-five.
"... left engine failure, we're out fifteen three at this time …"
The plane had been coming in the day the bombs dropped. Due to its location in the Glowing Sea, Backhand could only assume no one had survived. She almost wanted to ask Danse to turn off the broadcast, but the signal quickly petered back out into static as they carefully descended the ridge past the plane.
The shattered remains of sparse buildings jutted from the caustic ground like the incisors of a gargantuan beast, offering a semblance of shelter only to roving feral ghouls or ambitious mole rats.
It was a man-made hellscape, awe inspiring in its grim misery, and Backhand felt like she understood Danse's taciturn mood a bit better now.
Abruptly, a towering monolith was brought into sharp contrast against the green sky by a sullen flash of lightning. Backhand swallowed, unnerved by the stark stone structure that loomed up out of the wan light like a dark pyramid to a forgotten, terrible deity.
She tried to shake off her fanciful thoughts, scolding herself for being so easily influenced. This wasn't some silly story, some maniac rumination on the subject of doomed expeditions and places where man shouldn't go. This was just one more thing that humanity had built.
"And here we are." She announced needlessly. "You ready?"
"My power armor is within nominal parameters, so I would say I'm as ready as I'll ever be." Danse replied simply.
Working together, they muscled the double doors open and cautiously made their way into the pyramid-like structure. Backhand grimaced at the bank vault-esque door that greeted them, raising an eyebrow and cocking her helmet at Danse. "I'll bet...fifty caps that I can just give this a spin and it'll bust wide open." She said confidently, resting a gauntlet on the handle.
"Nice try, Vega." The paladin replied, his tone dry and humorless. "Don't forget we have a job to do."
Vega grumbled to herself and spun the handle, watching the ancient tumblers creak and separate before the door slowly swung inwards. "Bingo." She breathed, stepping gingerly out onto the old catwalk. "Shit, it looks like ArcJet in here."
"Remarkably similar." Danse agreed. "Be very cautious about what you shoot in here, we don't know what will explode. And remember to check your corners. I don't want to lose you to something we don't see."
Backhand swallowed hard, saluting while inclining her head to indicate that she received and returned the order. "Ad Victoriam, Paladin Danse."
  "Ad Victoriam, Knight Vega."
Silence hanging heavy in the air, Vega plodded down the rickety stairs of the catwalk. She briefly debated just hopping the railing and taking the plunge, but ultimately decided against it. The stiff gusts of wind from the door had stirred the centuries of dust into a thick haze, and warning lights still spiraled in amber circles, casting disorienting shadows over everything.
"It would appear that this facility was converted into a launching silo as well." Danse commented, gesturing at the large gantry-like structure that took up the majority of space in the middle of the pyramid.
Down, down, down they went, past multiple security doors. Feral ghouls rose to greet them, some still clad in the tattered remains of army fatigues.
"I've had nightmares like this." Backhand admitted during a brief moment of reprieve while she painstakingly tapped away at the keys of a terminal. "Sergeant Cathan and the rest of my squadron turn into ferals and I have to put them down." Danse's heavy gauntlet landed on her pauldron, squeezed once, and then departed. "I know it's dumb to be worried about. They've been dead for…" Vega trailed off, finally getting the double blast doors open and turning off the weakly buzzing alarm in the same stroke. " That's it." She said in relief.
Danse took point during this secondary half of the expedition, the paladin staying unusually quiet. Backhand chalked it up to him focusing more on his targets, lest a stray laser hit one of the caged warheads.
Down into the bowels of Prescott they trudged, soldiering onwards through tunnels made tight by the bulk of their power armor. The headlamp on Danse's new helmet illuminated the cramped, half-collapsed areas as he scanned from three to nine and back again.
"Left up here." Backhand broke the silence, directing him through a hole in the wall to circumvent a rubble-filled dead end and then overtaking him when he paused to check his rifle. "We should still be able to pick up the tunnel around this junk."
"Affirmative." Danse replied shortly. "I would advise that we not attempt to clear any debris. We don't know what will collapse on us."
Vega grimaced, "good point. That's why you're the paladin." Oddly, he made a scoffing sound, but she dismissed it as him being sarcastic again.
When the tunnel finally opened up into an enormous room, Vega breathed a little easier. Ahead of them loomed a massive set of red double doors, tarnished with age but still holding strong. What appeared to be a control room was situated over the doors, and Backhand quickly spotted the stairs that would lead her upwards.
The body sprawled across the top of the stairs gave her pause, however. It wasn't a feral ghoul, but a Child Of Atom. Backhand glanced up to the door to the control room, then back down at the body.
  Up. Down. Up again.
And she continued over the body, one massive gauntlet knocking comically gentle on the door.
"Enter." Intoned a voice from inside the room. Behind her, she heard Danse's rifle hum as he primed it.
" Easy , cowboy. Let me see if I can get this settled peacefully." Backhand whispered. She had no idea whether Danse had heard her or not, but she prayed he had as she set sabaton into the room.
The Children Of Atom had always been a ragged-looking bunch, their lives dedicated to the pursuit of " the Glow " and worship of what they called " the Great Divide ". This man was no exception, though the room was also occupied by a turret and assaultron. Two things no one wanted to deal with in close quarters.
"Halt, stranger. You stand upon Atom's sacred ground." The religious fanatic announced grandly. "Speak your business or be divided where you stand."
Backhand mused over her reply for a moment, finally stating, "we seek the Glow of Atom, my uh, brother ."
" You? " The man scoffed, "you, who slaughtered Atom's most faithful as you stormed this compound?"
"We sought to release them to Atom's embrace. Return them to the universe to be...divided anew. After all, matter cannot be created or destroyed, only repurposed," Vega replied smoothly, "as dictated by the Law of Conservation of Mass, writ by his most holy eminence Antoine Lavoisier."
"Ah, I see you are a scholar of the sacred texts as well!" The man remarked, a smile crossing his stern features. "Forgive my ignorance, sister. When I saw your armor, I feared that you came to destroy this holy ground." Backhand blinked behind her helmet. That had been strictly high school science bullshit, but she would take the victory. "I assume you wish to bask in Atom's Glow then, as one of his faithful?"
"We seek to spread Atom's glory via the use of these munitions." Backhand explained. "Our organization requires these vehicles to distribute Atom's might. Please, permit us to utilize them."
"You will put them to good use? That is all we can ask for!" The Child Of Atom's eyes filled with tears of what Vega could only assume was gratitude. "I had thought we would stand guard over this holy ground for all of time. Please, take this and prepare to enter His inner sanctum." He took her gauntlet and pressed a scrap of paper into it, gesturing at the worn-looking terminal on the table beside the sputtering turret. "Follow the brilliance of the Glow, and it shall lead you to the relics. May Atom's radiance warm your soul." He breathed, those teary blue eyes focused on the visor of her helm.
Vega inclined her head respectfully, praying that Danse would stand aside and let the man depart without a fight. Clearly she needn't have worried; the paladin obligingly shifted the bulk of his armor out of the way so the religious zealot could leave the room peacefully.
"' His most holy eminence' ?" Danse repeated, his tone wry. "You certainly have a gift, Knight Vega."
Backhand grinned under her helmet, reading the password off the scrap of paper and then carefully punching it into the terminal. "What can I say? A little diplomacy and a healthy sprinkling of mumbo-jumbo goes a long way." With a simple keystroke, the massive doors creaked open. The woman bowed as best as she could in her armor. "Shall we?"
Danse appeared to have returned to his silence, simply nodding and walking back out of the room.
What's gotten into him? Backhand wondered.
