Driving/Riding on the 101 between Thousand Oaks and the Central Coast is one of the most beautiful trips you can make in California, especially now, after all the glorious rain. For over 25 years I have driven it, and most consistently for 18 once I met Lynn and we became a couple. His family has lived in San Luis Obispo for decades. He introduced me to the shortcut on Highway 154 through San Marcos Pass and Cachuma Lake, so this added a new layer of beauty and delight to the landscape. I am grateful for the rest, sanity, and calm this drive afforded me over my 35 years in California. I definitely will miss it, but it will be something to look forward to when we return for visits. Lynn's sister is fortunate to be established in SLO and she'll never leave. A few snapshots of Highway 1 at Morro Bay and that cool rock, Highway 46 into Paso Robles, and the San Marcos Pass on the ride home. My husband is a road warrior, and such a good driver. Little Conversations

I had a conversation with a fellow mom the other day. She had read an article about how autism and ADHD manifest in adult women and shared her thoughts with me.

Knowing that I have an AuHD diagnosis, she looked at me with deep concern and said, based on what she read, she was amazed that I could even function as a mother.

I understand she meant it as a compliment, but instead of getting defensive, I asked some questions to get a sense of where her information was coming from. It turned out she walked away from the article believing that those of us with AuHD were so hypersensitive that we could barely manage without wearing headphones all day. That we were hindered by extreme food, texture, and sound aversions to the point that parenthood would practically leave us rocking in a dark corner.

I took a deep breath, gathered my thoughts, and explained that I actually see my AuHD as my motherhood superpower. I hear everything—the buzz of the lights, the hum of the refrigerator, my kids messing with nail polish bottles they shouldn't be touching, water sloshing somewhere it shouldn’t. I can keep tabs on all the shenanigans, even while watching a show or working. That’s my autism.

I can name every single dinosaur species my kids ask about, along with fun facts, which makes them think I know everything. That’s my autism.

I can quote their movies and shows with them, recall silly details, and engage with their worlds in ways they love. That’s my autism.

In my opinion, these traits make me a better mother than I would be without my diagnosis. Do I get overstimulated? Absolutely. Do I get touched-out? Without a doubt. But I’ve learned how to manage those moments, how to care for myself and compensate for the challenges.
