Eddie tries Richie’s clothes on as a joke but Richie loves it
aww this ones cute, thanks anon :) hope you enjoy!
“The ‘rents said you could sleep over”
Eddie smiled into the telephone, feeling a little stupid realizing no one could see him. Then again, it was better than Richie actually seeing the plastered grin on Eddie’s face. Eddie had had a stressful week at school, studying for hard tests and track meets nearly every day at school, it was a Friday afternoon and he needed to spend his night in an enjoyable way. For most teenagers, that would have meant a party or sneaking into a bar with a fake ID, not for Eddie. His idea of relaxing and having fun at the same time simply consisted of hanging out at the Tozier household. There, he knew he would find comfort in Mr. Tozier’s jokes and Mrs. Tozier’s unmatchable affection. Lastly, he knew he would also spend time with Richie Tozier, his favorite person. He’d never admit that last part out loud though. There were a lot of things involving Richie in Eddie’s mind that he wouldn't say out loud. Things that had been boiling up for a while now.
“Oh cool, I’ll get packing then.” Eddie replied looking around his room, already mentally picturing what to wear and bring.
“While you’re lying to your mother’s beautiful face about how you’ll be at Billy boy’s house instead of mine, give her a big fat kiss for me,” a light laugh came from Richie's side of the call. Unfortunately, all that got out of Eddie was an eye roll.
“I think I speak for all women when I say she’d decline the kiss. Anyways, I’ll be over in like an hour.”
“All women huh? You saying I could still get a nice o’ smacking on the lips from you, cutie?”
“That’s my cue to hang up.”
“Wait-”
Eddie put the phone down, ending the call and letting out a small chuckle. He knew Richie’s comments were just for fun and jokes, but sometimes Eddie couldn’t help but picture the things he said.
What if he could kiss Richie what if Richie wanted that too? Pushing those thoughts aside, Eddie turned his back on the phone and looked around his room, trying to decide what to change into, as he had been lounging in the same clothes he had worn to school that day. Walking over to his closet, he picked out something simple enough to look decent around Richie’s family. No effort was rude, always. Picking up a white t-shirt and some light jeans, he made his way over to the bathroom, grabbing his towel additionally on the way out. Even if Eddie had done an hour of track after school today, he would have still needed to wash up before heading out to Richie’s. Sure, he could shower at the Tozier’s, but there’s something about using one’s own bathroom that doesn’t match any others. Eddie found it funny that here he was, looking at himself in his bathroom mirror before hopping in the shower, and Richie was probably just getting high at this exact moment to some loud band.
After a quick wash, the curly headed boy decided to remain as just that. Instead of blowing drying his hair, he would just let it air dry, meaning his curls would be wild and free for the night. His mother hated when he didn’t keep his hair straight and neat, but she wasn’t going to home until far later than when Eddie would leave. She had loosened up over the years. But it wasn’t a type of loosened up where she understood that Eddie was growing and deserved some more freedom. It was the type that indicated she had just stopped caring. She spoke to herself a lot, mostly only acknowledged Eddie to yell at him about chores in the house and getting his meds. To be honest, Eddie believed that his mother's head had become so clouded by all the food she ate and how much television she watched every day, that there wasn’t much space to comprehend anything else.
He grabbed a duffel bag and first stuffed it with some things from his bathroom. Those things including his toothbrush, his mouthwash, and basically just a sweep of his hand pushing all the medication in his cabinet into the bag. Deep down, he knew all the pills his mother had given him growing up didn’t actually do anything. But for some reason, he felt weird without taking the placebos. Mike once told him that it could be linked to anxiety, and just feeling more normal when Eddie did something he grew up used to doing. Eddie just accepted it though, not trying to fight the urge to bring his inhaler everywhere or these pills when he spent the night somewhere. Most of his friends understood where he was coming from. Richie though, always rolled his eyes when Eddie brought his bag full of meds.
Eddie kind of liked that though, he enjoyed it when Richie would say, “You don’t need that bullshit.”
It made Eddie feel strong.
Suddenly there was a knock downstairs at the front door, catching Eddie off guard. He clutched his duffel bag’s strap in confusion, keeping it on his shoulder. Eddie walked down the stairs wondering if it could be his mother, but that didn’t make any sense. Why would she knock? She had also told him multiple times she’d be out late. Peeking through the peephole, Eddie let out a relief sigh, but then was filled with confusion once more. He opened the door with scrunched eyebrows.
“Why?”
Richie stood in front of him with a smile from ear to ear, “I came to pick you up! Couldn’t wait a whole hour to see you, my Eds.”
“Don’t call me-” Eddie was interrupted as Richie took the duffel bag from his grasp.
“Come on, let’s just go! Maggie was making some food when I left, and it smelled good.”
Eddie shrugged, “Alright, let me just leave my mom a note. How’d you know she wasn’t here, anyways? Could’ve risked her seeing you.”
Eddie spun on his heel and retracted to the kitchen to grab a pen and paper. Writing his mother a short note that he had a project to do with Bill and would just be spending the night there. There was little chance she would actually even read the note, but there was also a little chance she would even notice Eddie was gone.
“I lied, I came FOR your mom, like I do every night, and wanted to show you that she’d never deny a kiss from this hunk,” Richie expressed as he flexed his bicep, or as much of a bicep he had, “Was quite a disappointment when I noticed her car wasn’t outside, but then I realized I could always just take you home tonight instead.”
Now that it was something said in person, Eddie couldn’t hide his pink cheeks behind a telephone. He always got a bit red when Richie made jokes about his best friend, if Richie noticed, he never said anything.
“Shut it, fucker. I’m hungry and want your mom’s food.”
Letting out a loud laugh, the taller boy draped his arm around Eddie. Fortunately, Eddie didn’t move away, he let the arm engulf him and grabbed the spare house key to lock the door behind him as they walked out. Richie rambled about his day,, talking of his horrible math teacher and the way today’s cafeteria lunch sucked horribly.
As they got into Richie’s car, Eddie let out a soft laugh. “You wouldn’t have to eat the cafeteria food if you actually remember to pack a lunch sometimes.”
Starting the car, Richie slightly nodded, “I guess, but for some reason I feel like eating that trash-”
“You are what you eat!”
“Sure, funny, now shut up,” Richie continued through Eddie’s fit of giggles, “I feel like eating that junk builds character in a way. Like how trauma makes people funny, that’’s why our friend group is so fucking funny.”
Eddie just looked out the window, watching the houses pass, “I guess so, you still could just bring lunch from home.”
Richie didn’t say anything to that, and instead turned on the radio and just drove. Eddie liked driving with Richie, it made him feel calm. Doing anything with Richie made Eddie feel some sort of underlying emotions of calmness. Even if Richie was batshit crazy sometimes, and liked to smoke cigarettes on top of buildings after midnight. Even when Eddie followed him and scraped his knee climbing the ladder to the roof of a store, he felt calm. Maybe not as calm as he did right now, but in his heart he felt calm. Richie just sort of felt like home.
They were both silent until Richie’s house, but it was nice.
“We have arrived at your castle, my majesty.” Richie broke the silence as they pulled into his driveway.
“Majesty? Finally decided to show me the credit I deserve, I see.” Eddie told him as he opened his car door and got out. Instinctively reaching for his bag, he realized Richie had already grabbed it from the back. Feeling thankful for the action, he just gave the dork a smile when Richie walked around the car to face Eddie, duffel bag in hand. As they walked up to the front door, Richie just pushed it open without having to unlock it.
Not everyone thinks the door constantly needs to be locked no matter what, Eddie thought to himself.
“Eddie! Is that you?” A sweet woman's voice rang through the house.
“Thanks mom! Glad to see you too!” Richie replied first, obviously joking but making sure to chime in annoyance in his tone.
Maggie appeared in the living room from the kitchen, looking as beautiful as she always did. Richie’s genes didn’t just come from his father. Maggie looked 10 years younger than her age, bright eyes and perfect smile catching anyone's attention. She was tall and lean, yet still had a warm feeling to her aura no matter who she spoke to. The jet black hair that usually cascaded down her back was in a bun, seemingly to be out of the way as she cooked.
“Oh Richard, you know I love you. My favorite friend of yours is here though, let me give him some attention.” Eddie felt bashful as he was pulled into a hug by the women who had always treated him more like a son then the one he came home to every day. Her hugs were like heaven.
“I’m gonna take your bag upstairs, Eds.”
Eddie didn’t have the energy to correct Richie, who was already going up the stairs to his room. Instead, he followed Maggie into the kitchen as she asked about his day and he did the same. Turns out, she had been making cherry pie. The smell made Eddie’s stomach ache as he remembered he hadn’t eaten anything since lunch at school. Maggie must have heard his stomach’s growl since she chuckled and started taking out two plates.
“Oh gee mom, so when Eddie isn’t here yet I can’t have a slice but when he arrives we can feast? Seems a bit unfair to me.” Richie’s presence was made known as he stepped into the kitchen, eyes locked on the pie.
“Pie is always better when you enjoy it with those you love!” Maggie claimed as she turned to cut two pieces for the boys. Neither of them noticed how their eyes widened in the exact same ways. “Here you two are, have them at the table and be careful, cherry stains.”
Richie and Eddie both nodded and moved to the dining table. Taking their seats, Eddie marveled at Maggie’s baking. While he did that, Richie wasted no time taking the first bite.
“Mom!’ Richie said with a full mouth, “My taste buds thank you!”
The visible food in Richie’s mouth and the loud smacking of his chews made the other boy cringe as he took a fork of the pie. Maggie laughed in reply and her footsteps up the stairs were identifiable, along with the shutting of her room door. It tasted better than any desert Eddie had ever tried before. Not that his mom let him eat many sugary things, so basically it was the best desert Maggie had ever fed him. Overwhelmed with excitement to grab another bite, Eddie didn’t pay enough attention to how much of a hold his fork had actually gotten on the next piece. As said fork was brought to Eddie’s mouth, the piece of pie fell off, trailing down Eddie’s white shirt.
“Fuck,” Eddie let out, remembering the cherries did, in fact, leave stains.
“Uh oh, is it your chest’s time of month?”
“Real funny, dumbass. I gotta change out of this and see if running it under water helps at all.”
Getting up, Eddie quickly left the dining table, quick enough to miss Richie sighing and kissing a piece of pie on his fork. “I’ll be back soon, my love, must go help my other love with a crisis.”
They made their way up the stairs and Eddie headed to Richie’s room, knowing he had an attached bathroom there. Eddie wasn’t really thinking of anything besides cleaning his shirt, so the second Richie passed him when entering the room, Eddie closed the door behind him and went to take his shirt off.
“Alright, so you can just lean and put that bad boy under the sink and-” Richie stopped in his tracks when he faced Eddie, who was now shirtless with the stained garment in his hands.
“What?” Eddie’s face flushed in embarrassment, realizing he was now essentially half naked in front of a guy he’d liked for years. Of course, this wasn’t unusual, but the timing felt weird. They weren’t swimming or just relaxing on a hot day. Eddie was just shirtless in Richie’s room, not to mention without warning after shutting Richie’s door. Still, Eddie’s first thought was to defend himself. “You got some joke to make?” He angrily said.
Richie just stood there for a second, staring. Finally he choked out, “No! No… You uh, you looked toned. Very nice. I mean you look very nice.”
Raising an eyebrow and putting a hand on his hip, Eddie questioned, “No joke?”
“No joke.”
“Oh, well… Thank you. Guess I’ve been losing weight from track and then building muscle.” Eddie noticed Richie’s unbreakable stare, wondering if this is what always happened when Eddie was shirtless. Had he just never noticed? What else didn’t he notice? Without saying anything, Eddie proceeded to the bathroom, leaving Richie stuck in his trance. He turned the water on, not sure whether to make it cold or hot, but he wasn’t even sure if this would help anything. He tried rubbing the fabric together, just letting it soak, and even applying some hand wash. But nothing helped. Accepting defeat, Eddie turned off the water and walked back into Richie’s room.
“Where’s my bag? Can you toss me a shirt I packed?”
Richie nodded and walked to his closet, pulling out Eddie’s duffel bag and searching through it. “Hey… Eds? Only your meds are in here.”
Rubbing his hand over his eyes n frustration, Eddie wanted to call Richie stupid for a second, wondering how that was possible. But quickly he remembered how he never did grab any clothes, and had just opened the door for Richie after stocking his bag with pills and left. Richie looked at Eddie, waiting for a response. At first, Eddie could just sigh. It wasn’t that big of a deal ,but he had a bad week, this was supposed to be relaxing.
“I never grabbed any clothes. You knocked at the door while I was grabbing the pills and my inhaler and took my bag. I didn’t realize that was all i had, should’ve noticed at some point the weight was unreasonable.”
“Is it my fault?” Richie pouted, genuinely apologetic.
Tilting his head to the side, Eddie felt bad. “No ‘Chee, it isn’t your fault. Just a dumb mistake on my part, I can just borrow some clothes from you, right?” Eddie joked with a laugh to lighten the mood. Without needing an answer, Eddie kept the joke going by walking to Richie’s closet. He knew this was bound to make the taller boy smile, something that would also make Eddie happy. Eddie looked for a second, then grabbed some band t-shirt he didn’t know of. The shirt was black and brown, with the band’s name written across. It must have been new, because Eddie hadn’t seen this shirt worn a lot. He knew Richie wouldn’t mind though, and as Eddie slipped it on, he took note of how soft the fabric was. It was also very over sized, seen as Richie was a tall guy.
Eddie smiled as he walked out of the closet (and made a mental joke to himself) to look at Richie. Expecting a grin or some sort of joke about Eddie being so tiny, instead he was once more greeted by Richie’s staring.
“You okay?” Eddie asked, concerned at the amount of attention he was getting, short on or off.
“You’re so beautiful.”
Now it was Eddie’s turn to be speechless. He was taken aback and didn’t know what to say. What his brain wanted to say, was that Richie had it all wrong. That Richie was the gorgeous one. Richie and his black hair that just was perfectly messy, his smile that could melt anyone's heart, his sharp jawline, the way he spoke with his hands. Especially his laugh, it was like someone playing a harp to Eddie’s ears. That’s what Eddie wanted to say. Sadly, he didn’t have the courage to.
“Not really.”
“Shut up.”
Instead, Eddie mustered up all the courage he did have, and walked to Richie, wrapping him in an embrace.
“Thank you.” He mumbled into Richie’s chest.
Richie wrapped his arms around Eddie, letting out a breath. They stood like that for a while before Eddie finally pulled away.
“You have the right to wear any of my clothes, literally. Take it all. Leaving me butt naked is worth seeing you wear my shit. It’s like sexy in a domestic kinda way.” Richie said scratching his chin in thought.
“You’re too much Tozier, get your head out of your ass,” Eddie laughed out loudly, secretly wishing he could tell if Richie was serious or not.
Guess he’d find out at some point.

Spirit Tracks Translation Comparison: The Engineer Ceremony
This will be a comparison of the original Japanese version and the US English localized version.
Specifically, this will cover the cutscene of Link’s engineer ceremony, as well as the brief scene of meeting Chancellor Cole before it.
You can also watch these scenes for yourself in English and Japanese. If you want, you can check out the EU English version, too.
For the comparison, the usual points apply:
Bolded is the original Japanese text, for the reference.
Bolded and italicized is my translation.
Italicized is the official NOA translation.
A (number) indicates that I have a specific comment to make on that part in the translation notes.
As you read this, please keep in mind that with translations like these, it’s important not to focus on the exact literal wordings, since there is no single “correct answer” when it comes to translations.
Rather than that, consider the actual information that is being conveyed, in which way, and why.
--
Characters in this part who had their name changed between versions:
"Geezer” = “Teacher”, “the minister” = Chancellor Cole (He’s not actually named until later in Japanese.)
--
Meeting the Chancellor:
Guard:
この先は ゼルダ姫さまの 謁見の間である
Princess Zelda's audience hall is up ahead.
The princess's throne room is up these stairs.
Guard:
おまえのような一般の ものは この上に行くことさえ 許されんぞ!
Commoners like you aren't even allowed to go up here!
Only invited guests are allowed in.
Guard:
あっちいけ シッシ
Shoo shoo! Get lost!
What that means for you is...GET LOST!
Cole:
なんです! さわがしいですね〜
What is going on here? You are being quite noisy.
What's all the commotion here?
Guard:
これは 大臣!
Oh, Minister!
Oh, good day, Chancellor Cole! Apologies for the disturbance.
Guard:
は! こやつが ゼルダ姫に 用があると申しておりまして!
Sir! This one here claims that he has business with Princess Zelda!
This boy says he's come to see the princess!
Cole:
ほぉ! 今日の任命式の 機関士 見習いですか… まだ子供じゃないですか…
Oho! So, you are the engineer apprentice for the appointment ceremony today...? But you are still a child, no...? (1)
Is that so? You're here for the graduation ceremony? But you're so young.
Cole:
しかし 各地で線路が消えて 大変だというのに 姫様もこんな 式を行うとは 何を考えてるのか
Honestly though, just what is Her Highness thinking? The disappearing of the tracks everywhere is a serious issue, and yet she holds ceremonies such as this.
What a waste of resources. The Spirit Tracks are vanishing,
yet the princess insists on performing these ridiculous ceremonies.
Cole:
こぞう! 任命式はこの上で行います! ついてきなさい!
Boy! The appointment ceremony will be held upstairs! Follow me!
Well, come along, boy. We must get you to your ceremony! Follow me!
Cole:
ぼ〜っ としてないで そこを おどきなさい!
Stop daydreaming and move aside! (2)
Don't just stand there drooling, Private! Move aside!
Guard:
は!
Yes, sir!
Yes, sir!
--
Optional dialogue if you speak to the guard again:
Guard:
なんだよ まったく… いばりくさって
Seriously, what the heck... He's so full of himself.
He's so full of himself!
Guard:
いや あの大臣だよ! ゼルダ姫がやさしいから 調子に乗っちゃって
That minister, I tell you! Because Princess Zelda is so nice, he's getting cocky.
Princess Zelda is so nice, she lets the chancellor get away with anything!
Guard:
この国の王にでもなった つもりでいるんじゃないのか!!
I mean who does he think he is?! He’s acting like he’s the king here or something!!
Now he struts around the castle as if he were king!
--
Link’s Ceremony:
Cole:
許しもなく顔を上げるとは… 無礼ですよ 小僧!
Raising your head without permission... That is disrespectful, boy!
Raising your head without permission?
You ill-mannered urchin!
Zelda:
そんなに かしこまらないで下さい…
あなたが 新たに 機関士になる方ですね?
お名前を聞かせて 下さいますか?
Please, there is no need to be so formal...
So, you are the one who will become the new engineer?
Would you please tell me your name?
Don't pay any attention to Chancellor Cole.
You must be the new engineer.
What's your name?
Zelda:
…リンク 素敵な お名前ですね
リンク あなたは…
...Link. What a wonderful name.
Link, you are...
Oh, Link is a wonderful name!
Well, Link, by the power vested in me,
I hereby proclaim you...
Cole:
姫さま ムダな言葉は 必要ありません!
お早く任命式を おすませ下さい
Your Highness, there is no need for these pointless words!
Please do hurry up and finish the ceremony.
We're wasting our time here, Your Highness!
Please just hurry up and finish this foolish ceremony.
Zelda:
…わかりました 大臣
...Very well, Minister.
Very well, Chancellor.
Zelda:
ありがとう ジイ
Thank you, Geezer. (3)
Thank you, Teacher.
Zelda:
リンク あなたを 我が国の機関士に任命します
この国と民のために 精励される ことを期待しています…
Link, I hereby appoint you as an engineer of our kingdom.
I expect you to work hard for the sake of this kingdom and its people...
I hereby recognize our newest royal engineer...
Link!
Work hard, for we all rely on you, Link.
Text Box:
王家から機関士の 任命書を頂いた!
これで一人前の機関士だ!
You got your engineer's certificate from the royal family!
Now you're a full-fledged engineer!
You got your royal engineer's certificate!
Now you're a full-fledged engineer!
Zelda:
お願いです 今は何も言わないで…
Please, do not say anything right now...
Shh--take this. No! Don't say a word right now.
Zelda:
後で これを読んで下さい 大臣に気づかれないで…
Read this later, and do not let the minister notice...
Read this later...and beware of the chancellor!
Cole:
小僧 いつまで そこにいるつもりですか?
用は すんだのです 早く帰って 大事な汽車でも みがいてなさい
How long do you intend to stand there, boy?
You are done here, so please hurry up and go home, polish your precious train or something.
The ceremony's over, so I suggest you move along.
Why don't you go...polish your train or something.
Cole:
…もっとも…
...Although...
Not that it matters much.
Cole:
すぐ役に たたなく なるんだがな
It's going to be useless soon enough, of course.
The thing will be useless before long...
Translation Notes:
Because of how the Japanese language works, those lines technically could also read as Cole talking about Link rather than to him. Either would probably make sense for him, but I went with the latter.
What I adapted as “daydreaming” here, is ぼ〜っ として/bōttoshite in Japanese, which can refer to “daydreaming”, “spacing out”, and so forth, so the English version’s “drooling” is likely going for something like that, too.
In Japanese, this character is literally called ジイ/Jī, which can be translated as “old man” or “geezer”.
--
Comparisons & Thoughts:
These scenes introduce us to some major characters, so there is a bit more to talk about here.
-
Let’s get a minor thing out of the way first.
In Japanese, the ceremony is called an “appointment ceremony“, while in English it’s called a “graduation ceremony”.
The former does make more sense, as it doesn’t seem like Link had to officially “graduate” in order to be appointed, since Alfonzo just does the final exam with him on the fly while they make their way to Castle Town.
But “graduation ceremony” probably just sounded more natural, plus it saves some text space.
-
Since he appears first, I will go over Chancellor Cole next.
One detail that stands out about him is that he’s a minister in Japanese, not a chancellor. In fact, all other language versions seem to have him as a minister.
If I had to guess, I think this was probably changed so his name would be an alliteration?
He is not the first Zelda character to have the title of minister though, as there was also Minister Potho from The Minish Cap.
So, the English version is technically inconsistent here.
Also interesting is the fact that in Japanese, the minister is not given a name yet at this point.
But I will talk about this more once we are actually told what his name is.
In Japanese, Cole speaks in a manner that is technically formal and “polite”, but of course he also gives off a vibe of looking down on others, given what he actually says.
For my translation, I chose to adapt Cole’s formal way of speaking by having him not use contractions all that often. But keep in mind that this is only one way to adapt this.
Plus, not using contractions is probably not something the English version could’ve pulled off in-game, given how much more text space that would eat up.
The English version’s portrayal of Cole is ever so slightly more openly insulting, slightly less underhanded, but not in a way that deviates too far from the original at this point.
There is a more notable difference with how Cole is characterized between the versions, but it’s one that won’t come across well until later.
We only get an early hint of it during the moment where Cole flashes his smirk at Link, where he briefly talks in a slightly more informal manner.
If the English version was trying to reflect that, it doesn’t really stand out. But it doesn’t stand out much in my translation either, as a lot of these differences are just harder to portray in English.
-
And finally, we have the introduction of Princess Zelda.
In this scene in particular, Zelda comes across as slightly more soft-spoken in Japanese, possibly discouraged by the minister’s presence.
This is something we see from time to time with her, having her be a bit more lively in English, but it’s not always the case.
Similar to Cole, Zelda has a mostly formal, polite speaking style in Japanese, so I decided to adapt it in a similar manner.
But note again that this is just my personal choice, and that there are many ways one may choose to adapt this.
Given Zelda’s very sheltered background, I felt it would make sense to not have her talk like most children her age. And I feel her speaking style in Japanese usually is more formal than other children her age.
Now, some of you may know of a developer quote that mentions how this Zelda was actually specifically designed to be less princess-like and more like a normal girl.
So my writing style for her might seem contradictory to that idea, but I personally don’t think so.
For me, Zelda’s child-like nature is not reflected in the way she speaks, but in what she actually says and how she acts.
She attempts to have a friendly chat with Link during this formal ceremony, she is often quite outspoken about things she doesn’t like, she can even be blunt to the point of being rude, all while being somewhat ignorant about this herself.
Additionally, she will often voice her fears and be self-deprecating in a more direct way, which you don’t often see from the Zelda archetype, who’s supposed to be more of an authority figure.
But on top of that, she can also be quite playful and goofy, of course.
It’s these traits of her that, to me, reflect her nature as just being a normal kid, despite her upbringing.
That explanation was a bit long, but I wanted to make sure no one mistakes my writing of Zelda as an indication that she’s actually a super serious, no-nonsense character, or anything like that.
-
As a whole, I feel like these scenes were “spiced up” a bit more in English than say, the scene at Niko’s house, but they never digress too far from the source material.
To me, the Japanese version does offer a slightly different perspective on the characters, but with a lot of these things it’s more smaller details that add up over the course of the whole game, rather than specific singular examples.
With that said, this is it for this part. Feel free to check out the next one!

My experience in a recovery house.
I’d like to share a story about my recent experience while in recovery housing.
At first I moved in with really high hopes. The place I moved into seemed very positive and safe. It was run by a nurse who was also a recovering alcoholic.
When I moved in, there were two other women in the house, L** and T****. They were both older. L** was the senior roommate with the responsibility of reporting any suspicious behaviour by the other tenants.
A few weeks in and I noticed some tension between L** and T****. Eventually, T**** relapsed on alcohol inside the house and was removed. This was scary for me, because T**** tried to get me to leave the house a little earlier with her, likely to use, but I refused. She exposed herself as drunk later on in the evening and was quickly removed.
About a month later we got a new roommate. Her name was C******. When she moved in she started to behave in a way that would make me embarrassed for her. When she first came to the house, she had just left a rehab facility and seemed to be full of stories about how ‘hard core’ her drug use was. She admittedly was taking suboxone, but she also admitted to being a regular cocaine/crack user and alcoholic. What was strange was she had a lot of glory stories about how she was a successful drug dealer, pulling in a few million a year. Her friend had a bunker where they hid from the cops, bla bla bla.
She took quickly to L** and I’d often hear them outside chatting in the early hours of the morning while smoking. So I figured she’d be easy to get along with since my roommate liked her. I trusted L**’s judgement at the time.
Quickly after moving in though C****** started to say weirder things. This included stories about how she frequented a well-known biker group’s clubhouse in Victoria. The only thing is, there is no clubhouse currently in Victoria. I asked her when she went, since there was one briefly here a few years ago and she told me right before she went to rehab a few months prior. Okay…
Following that she’d frequently go for walks on her own to the pharmacy or the store. She came back twice with two weird stories. Once, she told us while in the pharmacy she told my roommate and I that a man approached her and told her she was incredibly good looking and that he’d like her to model for him. I don’t want to be judgemental – C****** is in her fifties, is about 4’9 and is not really someone I’d see modeling.
Another time she came home and told us some knight in shining armour approached her on steel horse (motorcycle) and knew her name. He spoke comforting words to her – as if to encourage her on her mystical journey in sobriety. Since we lived in a private location, I was concerned that this man may have followed her home. I asked her and she told me that he already knew where she lived because he told her that he was expecting her. This was her destiny.
She also went into great detail about how her friends knew how to cheat urine tests. This alarmed me because she was super wobbly at times and looked sedated. I don’t know if you can supplement suboxone with illicit heroin and pass a test, but if she used clean urine – that would be a fail too since she had to test positive for suboxone. I asked her a few times about what suboxone would show up as and she didn’t really answer.
C****** was also very animated about her therapy sessions. She would be in her room for hours undergoing intense therapy and she would tell us how hard it was on her, garnering sympathy from L**. To me I wasn’t really buying it. You don’t get exhausted talking on the phone laying in you bed. She said she had a lot of trauma. I tried to relate to her and asked what some of the things she experienced were that traumatized her. She went into detail about an abusive boyfriend – then the next week she was elated having spoken to the same boyfriend she had claimed to have been abusive.
Whenever the conversation wasn’t about her she’d turn it into a conversation about herself. She had so many different incongruent stories about her family life, boyfriends, husbands, friends. It was hard to keep up. She admitted that her daughter and her had a strained relationship – which I could understand since she was a junky fuck up who neglected her.
She’d often complain that friends had alienated her who were still using, and then make statements that these friends she owed money to, then she said they forgave her. Etc. who cares. She gave me about five different names of boyfriends she had and she told me that she knew a male friend of mine that I was close to and insinuated she had a relationship with him. When I asked him, he told me he didn’t know who she was.
Another girl, named J**** came to the house a few weeks after C******. She was suffering a great deal. It was clear that she had either relapsed or was being heavily medicated still. She also came from the same rehab facility as C****** but there was no indication that the two had interacted, which I found strange. They were there the same time.
I knew J**** from my first attempt to get sober a year before. She was doing quite well and actually was in charge of the recovery house I was at the year prior. It made me sad that she had relapsed because she was very young, and when I knew her a year ago, I was really confident in her recovery and thought of her as an example.
J**** was struggling quite a bit and C****** and my other roommate quickly began to gossip about her outside. I could hear them through the open window. This upset me since they seemed to judge her quiet behaviour immediately. They reported her and we took drug tests which J**** and the rest of us initially passed.
Regardless, J****’s behaviour was withdrawn and they continued to insinuate that she was relapsing until she was finally kicked out. I don’t know if she did relapse but being under that kind of scrutiny could very easily push anyone into a position where they would.
Once J**** was gone, things between my roommates quickly turned to me. We were stuck inside due to Covid and I became quite depressed, wanting to get out and get a job and other things. I didn’t like online meetings and the group meetings we had on Zoom were heartless and seemed forced. Additionally, my roommates were given permission to go out and do things, but for some reason I was not.
Things got weird one evening when I went for a walk with C******. She told me her any my other roommate were “worried about me.” I had recently expressed my frustration with the situation, but nothing alarming. I echoed things my roommates said about the circumstances and tried to keep myself occupied.
During that time, the owner of our house, J*, employed a ‘helper.’ Her name was T*****. We were directed to call her twice a week and check in. After the first few conversations with her, I started to feel like the conversations were forced and T***** seemed combative. I began to forget my phone calls and the J* and T***** implemented a card system, where you were issued a yellow card as a warning. After 5 yellow cards, you’d get a red card, which meant eviction. I was issued a yellow card after missing a phone call with T*****. I didn’t think much of it but I felt like I was interesting in moving out since the restrictive rules of the house, which fluctuated in severity between tenants, seemed to make it impossible for me to have a healthy social life. But, I never indicated that I was officially moving out since my finances were a mess.
At this time, I was quite interested in getting back to work. And at this very time the local newspaper ran a story about a company I worked for. The company was ensnared in a money laundering scandal. This concerned me because I was worried about my reputation being involved in this company when I was set on finding new work. I told my roommates and showed them the article. I was also contacted by a news reporter, who wanted me to speak on the matter but I declined due to the fact that I had signed a confidentiality agreement.
I expressed my concerns during one of the forced group chats on Zoom while T***** was present. I didn’t know at the time, but talking about these matters – things that were concerning to you – was not of essence during group. Group was a place where recovering addicts and alcoholics were expected to parrot each other, feel guilty and talk about what they’re doing in recovery to better themselves by talking about the same things over and over, like making a gratitude list. My idea of getting better was to get a job and get out in the real world instead of isolating – so my contributions were not appreciated.
Everyone was sort of crumbling from the isolation due to Covid, and the household chores were being ignored. I took it upon myself to do many of the chores without complaining, even if they weren’t my assigned tasks. We would write down the chores we did and I did this after doing the lion’s share of chores. One morning, after doing every chore, I heard L** and C***** angrily chatting about the chore log book and saying it was “bullshit” that I did them all, even though they heard me vacuuming, cleaning the washroom etc.
One night, the mop was broken, so I used detergent and a rag to clean the floor on my knees. It wasn’t a big area to clean, so it wasn’t really a big deal. However, I bumped into a mirror that was hanging on the wall and it fell and broke. I made sure to clean up the pieces and then told my roommates to watch out for shards because I wasn’t sure if any had gone under the fridge or might emerge, even though I had scoured the entire area of any sharps. I also had to dispose of the mirror, so I told them I had put it outside. Neither of them saw or heard me, but they quietly nodded as I told them and then retreated back to their rooms.
The day after that I could hear them talking about me upstairs while I watched tv downstairs. “Does she think that, like, she worked at that company, or something?” I heard. “Yeah she broke that mirror and she probably did it on purpose.” What? I went upstairs and asked them if they were going to talk about me to keep their voices down. They were stunned. They then went on to say “we’re not talking about you.” I bluffed and said I had recorded them. “Oh, well we’re very concerned.” Ok, I thought – you weren’t talking about me but you were. Which one is it? They made all sorts of claims and when I responded, asking them again, to simply lower their voice they started making dismissive remarks like, “JUST WOW!” “YIKES!” I didn’t speak to them for the rest of the night. Honestly, saying things like “JUST WOW” and “YIKES” are a dead give away that the person saying it has already made up their mind about you – and that what you said was horrible and they expected it.
The next morning I was asked to take a drug test and passed. A few days passed and things seemed normal again. Then I missed a call with T***** and was issued another yellow card. Whoops.
A few days later things got very strange. Around noon, I saw my roommates dramatically run for the door, get into a car and leave. The tires squealed as they left, as if they were the Dukes of Hazard or something. Then the owner of the house, J* and he husband came over. They began to confront me about breaking the mirror and told me that the psychiatric unit from the hospital was on their way. They insisted that they were worried about me, and I admitted that I was frustrated and depressed so maybe I should go to the hospital.
When the psychiatric unit came, they seemed quite friendly. But they asked me questions that started to make me alarmed. There was a male and female psychiatrist there, and the male asked me if I was paranoid about someone following me, or that the company I worked for that was in the news was stalking me. I didn’t understand where they had heard that I thought that so I was stunned. They then asked me if I thought my roommates were part of a conspiracy to stalk me with the company I claimed to work for. I was agitated, so I expressed my disbelief in why they would come to the conclusion that I would think that. During this time, I did admit that I was experiencing anxiety and agreed to go to the hospital under certain conditions. In my previous dealings with Victoria’s Psych Emerge, I had been repeatedly treated like a criminal. I asked that I not be exposed to this and they agreed.
I rode to the hospital with J*. When I got there she gave me a hug and I was escorted in. I took a drug test and waited to speak with a psychiatrist. I spoke to a nurse, a social worker and several psychiatrists in a private room while security guards looked on. They asked me over, and over, and over again why I had violently broken a mirror. I told them each time that it was an accident. The last psychiatrist I spoke to noted that I was getting agitated and that she was going to give me something.
I was let out of the room and I heard the doctors and nurses debating on whether or not to administer powerful anti-psychotics while restrained in isolation while I sat patiently in the wait room. I sat patiently without showing any signs of violence while they loudly debated restraining me and administering anti-psychotics.
There isn’t a lot of documentation on anti-psychotics and their misuse because no one understands why psychiatrists would prescribe medication that makes people miserable. Unfortunatly, anti-psychotics are lauded for curing everything from anxiety to delusions, depression to psychosis. I don’t doubt they have some benefit in short term use by minimizing psychosis, but their long term use has never been accurately documented and psychiatrist cherry pic anecdotal testimonies about patients who benefitted from them to cure an broad, unbelievable range of psychiatric problems.
I’ll briefly explain how they work: they block dopamine. Dopamine is responsible for regulating the brains reward system. Hard drugs like cocaine, crack, meth, heroin etc. high-jack the brain by flooding the dopamine receptors. People feel good, too good, on these drugs. That’s why they’re addicting. Anti-psychotics do the opposite. How in the hell does high-jacking and retarding the brain’s reward system help with depression if it stops your brain releasing dopamine? They’re tranquilizers in that they make people subdued because they feel nothing. They don’t feel rewarded for their actions. This is good because they may be rendered unable to act violently because they have no desire to do anything. So, that’s good, I guess. It’s good for someone who’s violent and impulsive. Temporarily.
Naturally patients who aren’t violent or don’t fit into categories of psychological distress that require sedation have no idea that a doctor would give them something that would impair them from feeling good, so if they experience the overwhelming negative effects of anti-psychotics, they likely won’t make the connection that they’re actually being caused by the medication the doctor has prescribed to make them feel better. Regardless, they’re non-addicting and some patients reported they feel better, maybe. And, they put people to sleep making agitated patients easier to deal with. So, with that overwhelmingly limited amount of evidence to support the administration of anti-psychotics, they’re given out like candy by psychiatrists all across Canada.
I’m sure psychiatrists don’t do this because their intentions are bad. Big pharmaceutical companies like Johnson and Johnson have made incredibly convincing arguments to support the use of Risperidone, despite overwhelming cases in which males were reported to have grown female breasts, thousands of patients displaying suicidal ideation, mental impairment and brain shrinkage. Marketers from Johnson and Johnson make powerful, emotional pleas to defend this drug – lauding it as a cure all for austistic patients, depressed patients, psychotic patients, bi-polar patients. You name it. And since the goal is to sell, they claim the sale of this drug is both beneficial to them monetarily, while saving the world from mental illness. It’s fucking beautiful, everyone wins!
Anyways – I was force injected with the anti-psychotic Risperidone for 6 excrutiating months in 2018. It was like being stuck in a torture chamber – mental anguish 24 hours a day. I reported the side effects but they were dismissed, repeatedly. I often resorted to using hard drugs just to escape the absolute anguish just for a few hours to watch a tv program. While on Risperidone, I went to the hospital several times because I couldn’t breath, the anxiety was overwhelming. Regardless, no one listened. I was under threat of imprisonment while under the mental health act if I did not take the medication, so to prevent me from not taking it they gave me injections. It was so unbelievably terrifying. What my psychiatrist at the time did was a crime – but, no one cared. I guess if he believes it works, and I’m telling him it doesn’t and I’m the one taking it, then he must be right. Okay…
After months of fighting for my life on this drug, I admitted myself to rehab, mainly to get off Risperidone so I no longer needed to supplement my drugs with illicit ones just to feel normal. However, I was not informed that Risperidone causes a deadly withdrawal symptoms. The withdrawal included symptoms of anxiety, restlessness, ruminating thoughts, sleeplessness and depression that were so severe I could barely walk. Naturally, my councillor at rehab assumed I was ‘faking it.’ It took roughly 30 days for the injection to wear off. I still experienced some anxiety and was, you guessed it, administered another anti-psychotic. This time it was the lesser of all the evils, Abilify. I trusted the psychiatrist there so I stayed on it. It was a low dose and I was on a few other medications that probably cancelled its effects out including Concerta – a life-saver for people who abuse stimulants to concentrate.
Anyways, fast forward to my recent stay at the hospital this year after J* convinced me to go, where I listened in fear as they debated on putting anti-psychotics in me. I had a wrist band on when I signed in that said not to administer anti-psychotics, but when they asked me about it, they asked me why they couldn’t. I told them I wasn’t under the mental health act and that anti-psychotics caused adverse effects. Frustrated, the doctors just administered my normal sleeping medication.
The next day I was released the doctor I saw told me he didn’t understand why I was admitted in the first place. He believed I hadn’t acted violently and I showed up the confidentiality agreement that was sent to me by my former employer so I could convince him I worked there and wasn’t delusional.
After that, I was free to leave and got on the bus and went home. When I got home I went to the door and tried to get in by punching the buttons to the code on the door lock. Only, the door lock was dead. I rang the doorbell several times and one of my roommates came to the door. I could hear her on the phone, “should I call the cops? SHOULD I CALL THE COPS?” Eventually she opened the door, muttered something at me and I went to my room.
I called J* and told her what happened. She seemed disappointed and upset and told me to call my case-worker since she was busy at work – dealing with Covid (there was no one in the hospital with Covid by the time, but Okay…). I called my case-worker, S*** and he told me that I was being kicked out. He didn’t have time to talk to me much either. Wanting answers I then called T*****. I told her I was very nervous about what was happening and she became very combative. I asked her why I was accused of deliberately breaking a mirror and she asked me why I did it. I then asked her why I was asked if I thought people were after me because of the job thing and she told me that she knows the owner of the company I had worked for and none of that stuff has anything to do with me. I asked her if she, my housemates and J* didn’t believe I worked there and she told me she didn’t believe anything I said and repeated that she’s friends with the owner of the company, they’re handling it and that the newspaper is publishing false claims. She was also insinuating she had told him about me. Girl – my stay at the house was confidential ya’ll can’t go around telling your friends.
I went downstairs since I was worried about what to do and phoned a friend. When I was on the phone, my roommates dramatically ran down the stairs and I heard them say “I’m scared, let’s call the cops! CALL THE COPS!” They then squealed out of the parking lot - like some kinda post-menopausal Thelma and Louise - just as J* came in. J* worked about 45 minutes away but she arrived within 10 minutes of me talking to her when she told me she was at work. So she wasn’t really working like she told me.
J* came in and started talking. She told me that what she was doing was for the safety of the other roommates. I then cut her off and asked her if she had my safety in mind. I reiterated that I was taken to the hospital, interrogated about a mirror breaking and interrogated about being delusional about a job I worked at. She then told me that what she did was what she was told to do in these situations and that she was legally bound to protect the other tenants. Okay…
I wasn’t comfortable with how combative T**** was or that she had told anyone she knew about me and I questioned her qualifications. J* told me she had a bachelor’s degree - later I’d go on to find that was a bachelor’s in marketing (relevant, right?)
I made the case that I was actually put in danger by her and my roommates insinuating that I was delusional and violent – that she took something my roommates said at face value without asking me. She had no intention to uphold my safety since no one told me at the hospital that I was being kicked out, that the door was locked with my valuables inside and no one in my family was informed. What if I came home the night before instead of staying at the hospital – with no access to my belongings, money or phone. What she did put my life in danger. There’s no limit to what my roommates could make up about me – and since their first claims were taken at face value, who knew what else they could fabricate. Those claims were enforced and legitimized. There’s no limit to what someone can fabricate and when those fabrications are endorsed by a superior, the urge to fabricate more – especially in low self-esteem harbouring recovering drug addicts becomes intoxicating. Why feel bad about your mistakes when you can make someone look worse. I get it. I’ve done it.
Fortunately, I learned that my roommate had bunged up a call to the police when I arrived because she couldn’t report that I was doing anything wrong. She just told them I was at the door. They asked why the door was locked to me and if I had been told that I wasn’t allowed in and she said, “no.” I didn’t hear the rest of the call, but I assume they hung up or told her that they were busy with real problems.
Instead of stay and argue, I called my sponsor who told me to get my stuff and leave. I had real fears – their perception of me ruled how they perceived what was going on, so I’d better just vanish. Which I did. My sponsor told me that they wanted a reaction, so I didn’t give it to them. I had to get my dad to pick me up. This for me was the most difficult part since anyone in any position of authority is right compared to me – so even when J* admitted she made a mistake after I made my case, she did so only to my dad (not me of course), I knew he didn’t really believe that. I knew there was always some reason for him to believe I was kinda responsible.
Just some foreground on my dad – when I was growing up he’d abuse my brother and I verbally and for a brief time physically. The later stopped when my brother punched him straight in the face and knocked him out. His verbal abuse continued, belittling me for things I did because I was dreadfully shy. He called me a loser with no personality in my graduating year. Made me ashamed of my interests. Would talk me out of seeking out better opportunities because he had so many doubts about my abilities. Scary stuff.
So naturally, even if my roommates and J* had done something wrong to me – who the fuck cares, its me, I am the source of all the problems because of the way people think of me. I have no money, no job, lying junky, so – whatever.
A few days later after I left, a resident from one of the other houses owned by J* asked me what happened and I told her. I didn’t want to seem like I was “delusional” or that I feared them in anyway since they might use this as a means to have my committed again.
A few days after that, the same resident told me that C****** had moved out. This struck fear in me. I don’t know where she is, and since the house I lived with her in was a good 45 minutes away, I trusted I wouldn’t run into her at meetings etc. because of this. But, now, I have no idea where she is. I don’t wish her any harm, I just wish to never see her again. I don’t fear her for reasons that are unrealistic. They’re based on things that happened: bold displays of fear about me when I’m doing nothing to her culminating in cartoon worthy behaviour fleeing from the house while shouting things she obviously wants me to hear about calling the cops..Bitch, if you were really scared you would have already done called the cops. Also, the weird stories about knights in shinning armour on motorcycles and modelling scouts, impaired mentality from suboxone and/or illicit drugs to supplement. Bunkers, relationships with men who’ve never met her. etc.
L** blocked me on Facebook, which is alarming for me since she could have some fake profiles looking at my posts in order to try and twist something I write into a threat to her. I just stick to posts about animals and wholesome stuff.
See I have real fears, based on facts because things actually happened to me based on things that people fabricated. But I’m not going to call the cops. I won’t waste their time. I doubt either of these too people can effectively cause me any harm physically - but who knows what they might say behind my back. Fuck it, I’ll just fabricate stuff about them. I’m a better story teller anyways. If people don’t believe me at least they’ll enjoy my story.
I can only guess that the whole delusions about where I worked concept was spawn from some deep seeded disbelief that anyone who had a drug problem could have a professional life, since neither L** or C******* did. Everything seems unbelievable when you’re so self-centered that you only think your level of success is the benchmark for anyone else in your state of recovery.
See, L** and C****** are career abusers. They always failed. They never were anything. Their stories are lengthy ones, filled with selfish actions to feed their addiction. Of course someone else in their situation couldn’t have been anything else but what they were or worse. They can’t see beyond their own experience. And they can’t see beyond the wonderful world they’ve created in recovery – vindication from their failures by parroting their peers in recovery. That’s the easy way out and it takes no effort. It’s a formula.
Go fuck yourselves. All of you.
Bye.

House Of Spirits: A Haunted Cocktail Soirée is a true original, unlike anything else we have experienced in Halloween 2019. Though the name would suggest a themed popup bar, House of Spirits is quite a bit more than that. It incorporates eclectic elements: performance, immersive experience, interactive costume party, and even haunted house walk-through. However, in the end, House of Spirits is none of those things but rather its own unique combination.
The premise is that you are attending a party in a house cursed by the macabre art of a grieving painter, created in the final desperate days of his life, which opened a portal not to his lost love but to dark realms whose denizens now haunt the premises, blighting all who live there. How closely you encounter these beings depends on which activities you choose to participate in, the sheer variety of which is guaranteed to satisfy the cravings of even the most omnivorous Halloween enthusiasts.
House Of Spirits Halloween Review: Ghost Ship on Land?
House of Spirits is set in the mansion that used to house Delusion Interactive Theatre.
House Of Spirits: A Haunted Cocktail Soirée is the creation of Meyer 2 Meyer Entertainment, whose personnel formerly ran the Los Angeles Haunted Hayride and currently produce Rated R: A Horror Speakeasy. House of Spirits might sound like juiced-up version of the latter, rebranded and moved to a new location for Halloween, but it actually has more in common with a nearly forgotten one-shot that the Haunted Hayride creators produced in 2011: Ghost Ship.
Ghost Ship was not a hit with the public; it was a great idea that failed to live up to its potential, offering a three-level experience – one for each deck aboard harbor cruise yacht, with ghostly hosts and entertainers on the main deck, a show on the upper deck, and a scary maze on the lower deck. The problem was twofold: the yacht did not provide a sufficiently spooky setting, and it was impossible to fit enough entertainment into its hull to fill the ninety-minute cruise.
House of Spirits takes this clever template and ingeniously applies it to an ominous mansion* in the West Adams neighborhood of Los Angeles, bringing to fruition everything that Ghost Ship sought to achieve. With the atmosphere and square footage Ghost Ship lacked, this magnificent venue houses an amazing three-level event in and around the building. On the ground floor, guests can mingle with their ghoulish host and hostess, listen to music, watch a puppet show, and imbibe a half-dozen cocktails (included with the price of admission). Upstairs, there is a strange sort of scavenger hunt of a most morbid nature. And in the basement are not one but two scare experiences. Additionally, there are gathering places outdoors, along with a strange little hovel where you will learn the secret responsible for the curse upon the haunted house.
Add it all up, and House of Spirits provides multifarious forms of malevolent entertainment nook and cranny of its haunted house – more than enough to justify the recommended two-hour stay.
House Of Spirits Halloween Review: Arrival
An outdoor lounge where guests relax before their appointed entrance time.
House Of Spirits: A Haunted Cocktail Soirée offers two arrival times on weeknights and three on weekends: 6:30pm, 9pm, and 11:30pm. It is not necessary to arrive precisely on time, but it’s a good idea if you want to see everything. The event can be crowded, with a line on the sidewalk to get through the security search and another line in the front yard to validate tickets.
If you happen to get in before your appointed time, there is a “lounge” (a small mobile bar beneath an awning, with some limited seating), where you can wait. This is one of two cash bars on the outside grounds, where you can pay for drinks above and beyond the half-dozen that come included with admission.
Eventually, you ghoulish host, Raul, shows up and fills you in on whatever details you need to know about the “party” he is throwing inside the house, whetting your anticipation with a promise of drunken revelry on the main floor and terrifying demonic encounters in the basement.
Perhaps most important, you receive a punch card for the six bars inside the house, where you will spend most of the ensuing two hours. Though it is easy to overlook in the excitement of the night’s debauchery, this card includes suggestions and questions that will assist your exploration of the mysteries haunting the House of Spirits.
House Of Spirits Halloween Review: Ground Floor
On this level, spirits both ectoplasmic and alcoholic flow freely, creating a gay and magnificent revel, with the help of six bars offering free drinks. Both Raul’s wife and his mistress float about, engaging their party guests in conversation and dropping suggestions about what parts of the house they may wish to explore. There is no preferred order to the evening’s diversions and delights, but there are lines to get both upstairs and downstairs, so it’s a good idea to divide your time wisely.
An invisible hand answers your questions.
Pastimes on the ground floor include a giant ouija board, with a planchette moved by an invisible hand spelling out answers in responses to spoken questions. (Sadly, the ghost’s identify seems to be that of Anton, the hosts’ recently deceased child.) There is an out-of-tune piano, but we wouldn’t recommend playing it, since there is entertaining live music in the next room from a variety of performers, on electric guitar or accordion.
Best of all is the macabre puppet show, in a small room just off the main entrance. While a ghoul-faced narrator recites grim and grisly ghost stories, two sinister puppeteers – their dark, skull-like visages almost invisible against the black backdrop behind them – enact the action, the movement of the puppets enhanced with novel sound effects: liquid poured from a cocktail shaker to simulate vomit, a plastic bottle crushed to simulate broken bones. Don’t miss your chance to enjoy at least one of these short performances.
This malevolent mistress of the house invites you inside.
Party Guests
Great party, isn’t it?

House Of Spirits Halloween Review: Macabre Artists Named Francisco
Goya’s Saturn Devours His Son
There is one more important element of the ground floor presentation. In the gruesome Goya Gallery, art lovers may peruse a handful of disturbing canvases, such as Saturn Devouring His Son, one of fourteen “Black Paintings” created by Francisco Goya (1746-1828) during the final years of his life – a series which also included “Witches’ Sabbath.”
Though not on display here, one of Goya’s most famous works is The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters (1799), which depicts a sleeping artist tormented tormented by nightmarish visions of bats and owls, as if these apparitions will soon enter our world via the medium of the artist – a theme evoked in the back story of House of Spirits, which seems loosely inspired by Goya’s “Black Paintings.”
However, when you leave the ground floor to explore upstairs, you will learn that the artist whose work doomed the House of Spirits is Francisco Vega – not the renowned Spanish painter Francisco Preciado de la Vega (1713-1789) but a fictional character whose work was even more demented than that of Goya.
House Of Spirits Halloween Review: Upstairs
The staircase leads to a bizarre scavenger hunt.
On the second floor, a servant will inform you of the final, fateful days of Francisco Vega, who crafted six ghastly canvases shortly before his death. These Spirit Paintings, on display, contain clues to Six Keys, which may unlock the mystery of the House of Spirits.
After perusing the small gallery of horrors, you explore six rooms, each inhabited by someone or something depicted by the artist. These spectral phantoms (including a ghastly pregnant woman hoovering over crib containing a tiny skeleton- presumably Anton) may aid your in your search, but they will demand that you perform unpleasant actions to retrieve the keyes (reaching into bathwater for a rib bone is the least of it).
Some keys may not be easy to find, but if you persist in your quest, you will succeed, whereupon you deliver them to a strange character who marks you with a cryptic insignia on your hand or forehead, initiating you into the elite of the households inhabitants. Exactly what “benefits” accrue from this are unclear, but you may be sure they are of a nefarious nature.
Vega’s paintings hold clues to the Six Keys.
Expect to meet this creature in the flesh.
House Of Spirits Halloween Review: The Basement
After the upstairs scavenger hunt, there is nowhere to go but down – into the basement – where the true terrors lurk.
There are two attractions in the basement, each with its own entrance. One is a brief and eerie pantomime performance depicting Vega – deranged and eventually nude – creating his final work, a life-sized painting that opens a portal enabling a visitor from the other side to enter the earthly plane. Is this being angel or demon or neither? The answer to that question can be found elsewhere.
The second descent into darkness is the closest House of Spirits comes to offering a haunted house walk-through. Groups of half-a-dozen or so party guests are given mirrors and instructions to stand in pools of dim light, chanting “Molly Magpie, Molly Magpie, how did you die?”
This ritual extinguishes the light, allowing some denizen of darkness to manifest; then another pool of light appears, farther along, drawing your group deeper into the basement, where the ritual is repeated, again and again, each time with nightmarish results. There terrors invoked are all the more disturbing because they have materialized at your bidding, and the demons are not necessarily happy to answer your call.
Both experiences are delicious creepy, evincing the sort of demented artistry one used to see at the L.A. Haunted Hayride – less crude shock than carefully choreographed grotesquerie.
House Of Spirits Halloween Review: Exterior
The Mystery Solved
Exiting either basement attraction leads to the outside grounds, where you will find a second cash bar, a food vendor, and the Garden of Anguish, where you can relax among strange flora before reentering the House of Spirits.
Most important is a small hovel, easy to overlook in the darkness. An attendant should be outside to explain why you should explore its interior.
The entrance leads down to a confined space where you will see the pages of Francisco Vega’s diary projected on the wall, detailing the anguish that drove him to create his final sextet of uncanny masterworks and revealing the true nature of the being he inadvertently unleashed upon our world, dooming all future inhabitants of the House of Spirits.
House Of Spirits Halloween Review: Cocktails
Great party, isn’t it?
Six Spirit Paintings, Six Keys, Six Cocktails.
A key ingredient to the success of House of Spirits is the half-dozen miniature drinks included with admission. Guests receive one free drink at each bar inside the house, a bartender punching your card at each stop.
Offerings range from Goya’s Ghost (ginger, black currant, fire bitters, orange bitters) to Magpie (passion fruit puree, lime, agave, grapefruit, bitters. Each drink features a product by Don Julio, with guests choosing one of two options, such as tequila or vodka.
Though individually small, the creepy cocktails are collectively intoxicating, altering human consciousness to a level where it is more open to the contact with the spirit realm. By the end of the evening, contact with ghosts will seem like the norm.

House Of Spirits Halloween Review: conclusion
In case you have yet to unravel the mystery at the heart of this review, we had a supernaturally grand experience at House Of Spirits: A Haunted Cocktail Soirée. The $65 price tag may seem steep, but it is actually a bargain in terms of cost-benefit ratio. The myriad elements excel on their own terms, combining to form an amazing Halloween event unlike any other.
Footnote:
This is the same location used by Delusion Interactive Theatre on several occasions.
House Of Spirits: A Haunted Cocktail Soirée (Review) House Of Spirits: A Haunted Cocktail Soirée is a true original, unlike anything else we have experienced in Halloween 2019.

8x08: Hunteri Heroici
Then:
Cas is back from Purgatory, but it’s at a price he has no idea he’s paying.
Now:
Gary, a man with a wedding ring, meets Olivia, a woman without a wedding ring, at a secluded park. They’re happy to see each other --until Gary’s heart beats so hard it pops out of his chest!
At a Gas ‘n Sip, the boys load up on fuel for Baby and soda pops for themselves? (I mean, unless Cas is driving, I can’t believe they’re drinking beer. Additionally, notice how Dean doesn’t get Cas one but these days Dean gets Cas a drink even when he declines one. Sigh.) Sam breaks down the latest on Kevin and the tablet. They’re safely hidden away on a houseboat of Garth’s, but no new breakthroughs on the tablet. Dean then asks Cas if he’s heard anything on angel radio.
Cas turned that off. He doesn’t want anything to do with Heaven anymore (Sad Trombone Noise.) Cas is going to be a hunter! Hurrah.
Look at this radiant angel! Petition for Cas to smile more 2K19.
He’s going to be Team Free Will’s third wheel, adding extra grip and greater stability. Cheers all around! He even has a case! They decide to check it out. Cas asks to sit in the front seat, and is thoroughly denied.
Look at this sad bean. Petition for Cas to sit in the front seat 2K19.
Once at the coroner's office, they take a look at the victim. His chest has a huge comic heart-shaped hole in it. Once the detective leaves, Cas jumps right into hunter mode: no EMF, no sulfur. He sniffs the corpse and notices he did recently suffered from a bladder infection. “Cas, stop smelling the dead guy,” Dean chastises. “Why?” He knows everything now. Sam disagrees and mentions the affair the man was having. Dean surmises the guy was living a lie and it caught up with him.
*Sam suffered a fugue state for a year Flashback*
Sam and Amelia are settling into their new home together and Amelia’s dad pays a visit. He has no time for the shiftless drifter in his daughter’s life.
In present day, the trio head to interview the widow. Cas knows exactly what to do. He leans over the woman, and with a slightly funny New York accent, he screams, “Why did you kill your husband?!” The woman bursts into tears and Dean pulls Cas aside. “I was being bad cop.” “You were being bad everything.”
Turns out the wife knew about Gary’s affair. Cas is confounded by the turn of events, and Dean is elated.
Cut to a suicidal businessman on the edge of a building. He takes a step, but keeps walking on air several feet off the building. He exclaims, “God wants me to live!” before plummeting to his death. Splat.
TFW investigate again. Dean realizes it all sounds a bit like Bugs Bunny. Cas is on the case again! “So we're looking for some sort of insect-rabbit hybrid? How do we kill it?” Bless.
I just want to pause here and squee about how hard Cas is trying to be a hunter in this episode. He’s flipping adorable. And this whole episode is so beautifully bright and colorful (like a Looney Tunes cartoon!)
At the motel, Cas has an epiphany about cartoons and humanity (and I feel a bit called out as a fan constantly looking for more meaning in a silly little show with violence and humor.)
Motel Room Bullet Points of Goodness:
*Dean drops a Tom Petty reference
*Cas pokes around Dean’s toiletry bag
*The slumber party that was cut for time
*”I’ll watch over you”
*The set design
Cas hears about a bank robbery over the police band. Cut to a splattered body with a 1 ton anvil over it. Looney. The bank robber, dubbed The Black Hole, struck again. He’s called The Black Hole because he always leaves a signature black hole on the wall. Sam goes with the detective to look at paperwork on the other robberies, while Cas shows off his angel strength to Dean.
Later at the motel, Cas reads John’s journal. Dean asks how Cas is feeling. (o_O) Cas deflects and gets testy when Dean pushes for him to contact Heaven. (O_0)
Cas then confesses to Dean his fears about Heaven and how he destroyed thousands of his own kind. “I can’t go back.” He fears that if he sees how he destroyed Heaven, he might kill himself (O_O) (Like, this is legitamily heavy stuff. I think Cas is only now forgiving himself for this.)
*Interrupting Moose Alert*
Sam has enough looney information for them to map locations that correspond to a retirement home.
At the retirement home, Sam and Dean flash their badges (and poor Cas appears to reach into his trench but looks sideways glumly.) They ask to interview the residents. Cas’s first interrogation is a doozy. “You are so pretty, Charles.”
During the interview about her missing jewelry, the woman mentions that the cat talks sometimes. Cas is on to interrogation number 2!
While Cas starts to crack his catty canny interrogation subject, Sam's got eyes on another resident of the retirement home. Waggle those fingers Wayne's World style, kids, because it's time for a flashback!
In Sam's flashback, Amelia serves a godawful dish of pasta and noodle-fied hot dogs in keeping with her family's tradition of that as a first meal every time the military moved them to a new town. Sam tries to bond with Amelia's dad by throwing out that his dad was a Marine (a fact that I constantly forget). Amelia's dad continues to be a giant dick, mocks the Marines, and tells Sam that he thinks Sam is something akin to ex-military. Sam looks like a traumatized ex soldier to him, and he's just holding on to Amelia for a chance at a normal life. It's an insightful comment, but delivered in such a dickish manner that I want to punch the guy every time.
Dean snaps Sam out of his fuzzy flashback and Sam recognizes Fred Jones, a resident of the facility, as a psychokinetic ex-hunter. Dean and Sam rally the troops to interrogate Fred, tragically cutting off Castiel's masterful interrogation of the cat.
In Fred Jones' room, he's fixated on the TV which is showing old cartoons. He's utterly unresponsive to any of their attempts to reach him (which, to be fair, is mostly just shouting and being loud). DEAN. DUDE. Dean tests their hypothesis that Fred's their guy and bashes himself in the forehead with a book. From the sound effects and comedic expression, we understand that they're in the cartoon zone. “Do we...kill him?” Castiel asks, running through the hunter playbook. The facility director overhears this concept and our team is sent away.
Cut to a birthday celebration in the day room. There's a huge sparkler candle jammed into a massive pink cake and Fred's sitting in the corner. He lights upon an old cartoon with a stick of dynamite and in no time at all...WHAMMO! The candle explodes. Cake everywhere. (Fortunately, nobody died.)
Sam rushes up to announce that Fred's gone. Though things are looking bad for detective Cas, he does notice the diamonds on one of the nurse’s wrists. The diamonds belonged to one of the other nursing home residents, and were recently stolen. The nurse claims that her boyfriend gave her the diamonds and TFW speeds off in the mystery machine to interview their next suspect!
They find the thief's apartment. There's one dead guy and one gravely injured. Cas heals the injured man. <3 CAS <3 Then it's interrogation time. The guy Cas heals reveals that the doctor in charge of the facility is in charge of the thefts. He's taken Fred to the bank for one more score.
As TFW loads up in the car, Sam experiences another fuzzy flashback. This time, Sam's washing dishes while Amelia's dick father tells her - audibly in the other room - that he knows what's best for her and she should move home. FUCK OFF, AMELIA'S DAD.
TFW find the bank and sure enough, there's a black hole painted onto the wall. Dean reaches inside and when his hand passes through, he happily mutters “Awesome,” and gets ready to head inside.
Cas sniffs out the power near the bank and finds Fred inside of a van. Cas does a quick and super chill mind meld with Fred and Sam, propelling both of them into Fred's mind. It's a cartoon world.
In Fred's head, he's lucid. Sam and Cas tell him about all the weird stuff that's going down in the real world. “You want to know what's the worst thing that can happen to a guy that's got a mind like I got? Losing it,” Fred tells them. While Sam, Cas, and Fred are having existential crises, Dean fights the robber.
Dean’s gun doesn't work; cartoon rules are in full force. There are frying pans, anvils, and more. It’s a wacky, inventive fight and at the end, we all learn a very important lesson. Never bring a gun to a gag fight.
For Comedic Science:
Sam finally processes his soft focus flashbacks and tells Fred that he's gotta to wake up and face reality. Cas takes these words to heart, likely having his own soft focus flashback as we watch him standing thoughtfully in the background.
Fred wakes up. The thief tries to escape through the black circle on the wall but it's now just paint again. He threatens Dean with a gun but Fred comes in and forces the doctor to shoot himself. Fred's lucid for now, but tells them that it's only a matter of time before he slips away. He asks them to make it stop.
Cas tells Fred that he can help him, but it will be very painful and there may not be much of him left after that. Later, the procedure done, Fred listens to Ode to Joy in his head as they wind up the case. Dean offers Cas shotgun but Cas refuses. He has to--
And then Cas is zapped back upstairs to Naomi's office. She knows Cas wanted to return to Heaven and she forbids it. Cas is desperate to go back to Heaven and help, but Naomi tells him he must stay away. Back on Earth, Cas zaps back to the conversation. Instead of what he was going to say, Cas amends himself to say he's going to stay and watch over Fred for a few days and then figure out what he's going to do next.
And we've got one more flashback... Sam, Amelia, and Amelia's dad are finally bonding over stories of Amelia's embarrassing youth. FUCK OFF, AMELIA’S DAD. The phone rings and Amelia gets up to answer it. Sam opens up to her dad, telling him that he lost his brother and ran because of that. Maybe they'll be friends after all! Yay? And then Amelia gets off the phone. It's the military. Her husband's been found alive! Yaaaay?
Back at the retirement home, Dean and Sam take off, leaving Castiel to settle next to Fred and listen, for a little while, to Ode to Joy.
Wascally Wabbit Quotes:
Garth has a safe house boat?
So, what now? Move to Vermont? Open up a charming B&B?
A third wheel adds extra grip, greater stability.
So we're looking for some sort of insect-rabbit hybrid?
X marks the spot.
That's Looney, alright.
I understand. The bird represents God. And coyote is man, endlessly chasing the divine, yet never able to catch him. It's hilarious.
There was a pastry mishap.
“It’s wabbit season.” “I don’t think you pronounced that correctly.”
What's up, doc?

The Christmas miracle
Word count: 1992 // I had to make some cuts so it fits into the 2000 mark :D
Warnings: A little bit of everything ;)
Author’s note: Hey I just found this lovely contest idea by @hobigolightly and wanted to participate :) I hope the rest of you like this as well as an attunement for christmas
I hope you are familiar with the concept of an Advent calendar because it is mentioned. It is just a box filled with chocolate or other stuff and you open one door each day. From the 01.12. till the 24.12. I hope this is understandable :)
–> Masterlist
Recent: Lost on you
She was not the type of girl you just walk up to and say “Hi”. You would rather avoid her gaze and change direction when you encounter her. It was some kind of dark aura that was engulfing her. Quite intimidating…at least at first.
Y/N’s POV
It was the second day you lived in your new apartment. Well it actually only consisted out of one room and a small bath. You rolled around on the airbed you arranged temporary till you manage to built up your bed. The scene presented in front of you nearly let you cry out in frustration. To see that everything was a mess and the fact that your limbs felt numb from carrying all the boxes yesterday. You hid your face under the blanket and decided to not do anything today when you heard a knock on the door. You groaned. Who is this? I do not know anyone here. Heavily you stood up and stomped to the door.
A light haired boy came in sight as you opened the door. He smiled gently. “Hello. I’m your neighbour and wanted to pre-”
With a swift move you closed the door in front of his face. You turned around hearing some murmering from the other side. You were ready to lay down again when it knocked again.
“Go away!”, you yelled, “I don’t need no friends.”
“I never said I wanted to be your friend. It’s just a form of courtesy to great your neighbours. If you have ever heard anything about that!”, he retorted.
“Of course but I think I’m free to choose to whom I want to be polite to. Besides this I clearly don’t need intrusive neighbours who want to chit chat with me everytime we see us or borrow my sugar.”
It was silent for a while so you thought he would have left but then you heard a bitter chuckle. “I feel sorry for you. What a sad life you must live.”
You tore open the door. “My life is none of your business!”, you screamed enraged. Anger tears were burning in your eyes.
“Well isolated like this you must be pretty lonely.”
You gulped. “No I’m not lonely… Have you ever heard about independence?!”
“Oh is the small girl away from home for the first time living of off mommy’s and daddy’s money?”, he questioned sarcastic.
Suddenly it felt like someone had kicked you in the gut. You were so taken aback that you did not noticed the first tears that were rolling down your cheeks. Out of reflex you wiped over your face. Only then you noticed it. You hated that your body was reacting like this, displaying your vulnerability for everyone to see.
“Who are you to judge anyway?!“ You slammed the door shut.
Third person’s POV
Yoongi just came back from the studio were he had a rather unproductive day. He just couldn’t really focus the whole day. It basically had been like this the whole week. Additionally it also had started to snow. A little to early for his taste since it was still November. Yoongi entered the apartment building brushing off the snow that had not melted already. He made his way up the stairs and as he reached his floor he stopped in front of your door. Yoongi had never been the guy to intentionally hurt others so seeing you cry made him feel like the worst. Walking by your door every morning and evening he quietly hoped you would open so that he could apologise. But he wasn’t brave enough to just knock.
“I don’t think she is at home”, someone informed him. He spun around to spot the renter. A woman in her mid sixties, who carried her age well. “Probably at her third job. What a poor thing right? She is always working till late in the night.”, she seemed lost in her thoughts for a second, “But who am I telling this. I’m sure you know it. Are you two friends?”
“Well…umm you could say that.” He scratched the back of his neck.
“That is good. She really needs someone. Normally I would say that there must be a greater reasons why people are punished with such a misfortune…But in her case…Taking a young girls parents…Both at once. Really is too cruel.”
She has lost her parents?! Remorse spread in his chest.
“How did it happen?”, Yoongi asked rueful.
“Oh she hasn’t told you yet”, the renter was surprised.
He shook his head hoping she would still answer.
“Maybe I have talked too much again. She should tell you the rest. So have a nice day.” She quickly hurried upstairs.
“You too”, he murmured automatically. He entered his apartment. I need to fix this. Yoongi’s eyes fell on a few small boxes that were tossed in one corner of the room and suddenly an idea stroke through his head. He looked at the clock at the wall.
I should go. The shops are closing soon.
Y/N’s POV
This was one of these days you would have loved to stay in bed. First you were scolded by your boss at your second job and then you got fired from your third job.
“Reduction in staff my ass”, you murmured out loud wiping your nose with the back of your hand. “And I also caught a cold. Awesome.” You slowly climbed up the stairs.
Your eyes widen in surprise when you saw a package lying in front of your door. Who’s is this? It can’t be mine. You looked around but no one was in sight. Then you picked it up. Your name was written on it and the number one. You shook it lightly. Rumbling was heard. But I have not ordered anything. You had to admit that the curiosity was killing you so you quickly grabbed a knife and cut it open.
Inside of it was a box of chocolate and not any kind of chocolate but pretty expensive looking ones. Whoever send me this has a really good taste. Eagerly you tore the box open and put one in your mouth. Immediately your eyes rolled back. It tasted like heaven. This is by far the best thing that had happened to me today. And probably the best chocolate I have ever eaten. You took another one and inspected the package further. A small piece of paper lied at the bottom. The letters “tw” where written on it. Tw? What is that supposed to mean?! You looked into the box again. But there was nothing else in it. No letter. Nothing.
Third person’s POV
“Dude why are you doing this again?”, Hoseok was lying on the sofa watching Yoongi. Yoongi was busy preparing the fifteenth package.
“Because I want to apologise.”
“Then go over there and knock on the damn door. It would save you a shit tone of money and time.”
“It is not that easy. You can’t understand this.”
“You are right. I can’t understand why somebody is working himself up for a stranger”, Hoseok made a meaningful pause, “Or do you want to fuck her? Then I could-”
“Not everything is about sex.” Yoongi threw a pillow at him.
Hoseok catched it. “But it should be..Tell me please what are you getting out of this then?”
“I can make her day better. Isn’t that enough?”
“No not really. You don’t even know her. You can’t just walk around and make people’s lives more enjoyable. It’s weird.”
“You know I really don’t need your unnecessary comments. Either you gonna help me here or you can leave.”
“Chill prince charming. You know I am always at your service.”
Yoongi laughed. “Then get your ass over here.”
Y/N’s POV
It was driving you crazy. It had been over three weeks and you still didn’t know who put the packages in front of your door You already thought about intstalling a camera in the corridor but that seeemed kinda over the top. Besides this you did not even have a camera.
You have created various scenarios in your head about who it could be. Maybe the old renter? She is always so nice to me. Or maybe a secret admirer? But the only clues you had were a various collection of different sweets, sometimes a self cooked meal or a little present. And of course a bunch of white papers with two letters written on it. You had already tried to bring them in a logical order but you always failed. You had to admit that you were hoping to meet the person. Since it was the 23th December already you had to hurry up or else it could all end tomorrow .
That is why you decided to take the day off today. Your goal was to stay inside the whole day. Near the door of course.
Half of the day had passed with you sitting close to the door waiting for any noises at your door. But there had been none and you were grewing impatient. You sighed out loud and since you really had to use the bathroom, you went.
Just when you washed your hands, you heard something had bumped against your door.
“I’ve got you”, you yelled while opening the door.
“What are you doing here?!” Your eyes wandered to the box in his hands and then back to him.
He stammered something incomprehensible while straightening up.
“It was you? The whole time?”, every sign of excitement has left your face.
“Listen I am very sorry for what I said. I did not knew about your parents and I feel terrible”, he tried to explain himself.
“Oh and that is why you choose me the orphaned girl as your little social project for the holidays?”
“No it is not like-”
“I’m fine. I really don’t need your help.” You slammed the door shut.
Third person’s POV
“Wow that really sucks. I am sorry”, Hoseok patted his shoulder. They were sitting in a bar. Everyone around them seemed to be in a happy-tomorrow-is-christmas-mood.
“It is alright you know. It was just a stupid idea anyway. Like you said we don’t even know each other.”
“Since when are you listening to me?! Come on I really think it was a good idea. You should bring it to an end.”
“No I don’t want to. It is useless. She hates me.”
“Christmas is probably the only day miracles are possible.”
“Shut up. Since when are you talking like that?!”
“Since my always optimistic best friend started moping about a girl he likes even though he did not even tried everything.”
“I never said I like her”, Yoongi protested while blushing a little.
“Dude, you can lie to yourself but not to me.” Hoseok stood up. “Let’s go.”
Y/N’s POV
It was christmas. I could not care less. Impatient knocking had woken me from my nap.
“I am coming!” you opened the door. A boy with a huge bouquet of roses in his hands stood there.
“Are those for me?”, you questioned surprised.
“Yes, they are.” He handed them over and you stumbled a little back under the weight. Now the face of the deliver boy was visible. He looked somehow familiar. “Please read the card in it because a friend of mine really put a lot of effort in those presents to see you smile everyday and I don’t think it should go to waste.”
“But-”
“Goodbye ma’am and Merry Christmas!” He left without hearing what you wanted to say.
You put down the flowers and searched for the said card. It stuck in the middle. It said: “This is the beginning: I’m.”
What is this suppose to mean? You read it again and again. Then your eyes wandered through the room and stopped on the white paper pieces in your trash can. You had thrown them away yesterday since you were so angry. You quickly turned it around and collected them all. It took you a little to sort them but then it made sense.
“I’m sorry. Do you want to spent Christmas eve with me? I’m Yoongi”, you read out loud.
Immediately you jumped onto your feet and ran out the door. You knocked on the opposite door. A little too hard maybe.
“Yeez Hoseok it-”, He had opened the door and stopped instantly.
“Hello Yoongi. I am Y/N.” You wrapped your arms around him and your lips landed on his. It took him a second before he kissed back.
After what seemed like ages you pulled back.
“Merry Christmas!”
Whaa I have finished it! I am pretty content! :) I hope you all like this as well ♥

Blackpool and its treasures- Unique Bath towels. Having a breakfast in HIVE in Blackpool made me realise that art is coming out of galleries on bigger and bigger scale. It makes me really happy that artists have a platform to show and sell their work in a day-to-day environment, in a café, which makes art itself more approachable. Four paintings hanging on the walls, two still life and two landscapes ready to be purchased, reminded me of Collector plan in welsh STORIEL, “own the art you love” project, which sympathised with the idea of art education on a daily basis, which is also being pursued by the artistic locations on the map of Blackpool and I count HIVE as one of them, because of putting effort in promoting & spreading awareness about local art. While on the subject of artistic locations , I also want to mention the Abingdon Studios. The parallel between them and HIVE is the everyday they bring to art. Garth Gratrix, the founding director of Abingdon Studios Ltd, whom I had the pleasure to meet, employs everyday and DIY materials such as wood, concrete blocks and found objects. He created a modern atelier studio, providing safe space to represent art, especially in lenses of sexuality and social identity. According to the artist, the studios were called by some as “messy space for messy people”. It addressed the problem of commissioned and independent art, the dialogue the today world has with commissioned gallery and autonomous studios. Modern artists do not just “sell” the art they produce , but also the personality that goes with it. They have to built up an appearance not only in the artworld but also in the business industry. Gratrix said he had to negotiate, while building a certain level of importance to who he was as an art representative, to not be seen just as a “messy” owner of the new propriety. Personal details can affect the way you are perceived. He mentioned the “joke in the room” problem, when he felt as it was expected from him as a queer man to be joking rather than having a business conversation. I think like a constant reminder of that was the page of an article in one of the studios called: “ Are You in the market for Art?” hung within a newspaper-like composition on the wall. The practise is questioned not only by potential patrons but by the audience criticality, too. They are more interested in the process of making art, answering the question of what drove the artist to create this piece, the experience rather than the importance of aesthetics. It feels more personable this way, the viewers try to minimalise the unfamiliar in the mysterious figure who calls himself an artist in the 21st century. The audience is curious, trying to find a safe space, a sign or a moment that will allow them to bring an artist to a less intimidating form. What I find surprising it’s not the art that’s a component of relevance for a modern viewer, but the person who produces it. It’s a very Duchamp-like approach (art cannot exist without its creator, who is not only valuable, but the most important component, : 'I don't believe in art. I believe in artists.') The place gathering all the arts is obviously an art gallery. While my staying in Blackpool, I went to Grundy Art Gallery, an important place in Gratrix’s life: “ When I was a child I thought, this feels like environment I want to be in, to be a part of “. He was everything his art was, playful, intelligent and with ready wit. Well aware of his heritage, the artist fulfilled the art viewer’s desire of getting to know him as a human being not just as an artist by introducing us to two male figures in his life, grandfather and father. Frivolity of taking a bath in “Shy Girl”, interfere with aesthetics related to the darkest times in history of human kind (horror of concentration camps his grandfather experienced), consequently the artwork’s philosophy is more comparable to Susanna and the Elder’s bath than to seeming wantonness of summer holidays by the seaside. Even though the bath towels respond to the marine space and seeking for material relationships between them, it has a lot more to it. By making revolution in art through simplicity and play, but adding to it conceptualism, Gratrix again explores the artworld in very Duchamp-like way. Yet, Blackpool- located artist remains exceptionally original, adding to his art a part of himself- a pinch of comedy, he’s creating a unique three-way dialogue between us, him and the past. Then we laugh and notice that the past is also the contemporary ( from the 1940s to now, the importance of pink triangle symbol within LGBTQ+ community perceived back then as shame mark) we are the artist (moving the towels, by touching them we invade their constancy; a similar concept in “The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors, Even”, M. Duchamp) and the artist is the viewer, watching us from a distance. The UK society is mostly working class and “Shy Girl” is about a middle-class leisure time on a beach, but just as in "A Sunday on La Grande Jatte" by G. Seurat, it has a “ugly side” to it, revelling imperfections of society (monkey suggests the women’s a prostitute and this piece refers to sexual discrimination). The pink triangle, here a white triangle, being a part of the artistic narrative, makes the artist himself more approachable by drawing upon a personal anecdote and bringing it in the aesthetics. Sense of authenticity is additionally deepened by the fact Gratrix is a gay male artist, using his artistic voice and space given as a platform to speak out. Composition of “Shy Girl” is made of three bath towels, two of them are spread out, whereas the third one is crumpled. As we already know, they provoke a conversation about sexuality and identity but what I found especially interesting is that within the making process, the thought came first before the playful colour palette. The artist mentioned the issue of identifying gender with colour- “feminine” or “ladylike” paints used for the art objects act really bold, standing in the way of stereotypical gay men portrayal, reminding me of increasing gender issues awareness welsh art exhibition: “ Button it up” in STORIEL, Bangor ( I found out that Roy Gratrix, the artist’s grandfather, played for the Bangor City Welsh Club, too!). The exhibition informs that pastel coloured children clothes began to be made from the middle of the 19th century with the start of cultural expectations given at birth. Language of colours is again linked to the narrative. “Cottage by the sea” towel, dominated by different light shadows of blue, purifies working class labour, makes it to be more elegant than it actually is, without pointillist monkeys and biblical duplicity (Seurant, S. & the elders). The artwork is personified by the choice of its placement. Seen from every angle by an opening in the balcony upstairs and by being able to rearrange the towels, it truly resembles a shy girl trying to cover herself from a male gaze. Maybe we are the noisy elders in this situation? But the artwork’s purpose is to be seen, even watched and questioned and seeing Gratrix reaction when my professor accidentally left a pencil mark on the medium makes me understand the spirit of “Shy Girl”. After all it really has a positive, playful charm and impishness, which can not be forget as being a true essence of the artwork. - K.W

Summary: When Prompto wakes up the past with some magical additions, he sets out to change everything.
Things to keep in mind: I’ve seen only ff15 brotherhood, Episode Prompto and parts of the ff15 game so some of what I’ve written will obviously be off. Additionally, I will be throwing various parts of cannon in the trash.
Chapter One
XXxxxXX
“Will you go back?”

Prompto wakes on a bed in a quiet, dark blue room and has a panic attack. He knows this room even years later because he still had, has pictures of it on his camera. He knows very well where he is even if the thought of it actually makes his stomach do flips because this can’t possibly be real.
Jumping off the bed, he lands neatly on the floor and reaches for a weapon, for his guns for anything, and his fingers clutch around the metal of cold steel while he makes his way to the door. Even if this wasn’t some illusion, the fact that he can see the moon through the window to left—a fact that nearly sent him to a panic attack, (no hunter worth his salt went to sleep without a watch, it was suicide) he makes his way through the house quietly, carefully.
Until he can make some sense of where he actually is, he refuses to let himself freak out.
This could be another trick of Ardyn’s or it could something else. But he will not freak out until he knows.
He makes it down the stairs, ears listening for anything out of the ordinary, listening for daemons, listening for scavengers, anything. The silence is as deafening as always, and he’s tempted to retreat back to the room and barricade himself in to wait out the darkest parts of the night, but he pushes forward because he needs to know.
Where is he?
He gets to the ground floor landing and scans the room, one gun in his right and another in his left watching for motion. He very quietly slides to the floor taking the time to ensure there really isn’t anything under any of the furniture before finally making his way to the windows.
He needs to know how strong his defenses are before he’s able to do anything to build up his new base, or even if he needs to move to another shelter. Moving from the floor to one of the walls near the windows he looks out and nearly has a heart attack.
There are streetlights and people.
Out at dark.
“Impossible. This can’t be…!”
He banishes one gun back to the armiger, and in two motions jumps on top of the roof, the beginnings of doubt already settling in his mind. Ardyn was a sneaking bastard, and magic user of the Caelum line but he had limits to everything he did, including how far his illusions could go.
As he looks around him, it finally hits him what’s he’s seeing because nothing he knows has the power to do what is currently in front of him.
Insomnia whole and alive.
His knees hit the roof of the house, his house now that he finally lets his brain make the connection he had ignored earlier, as tears trail down his face. His vision is blurry from the tears but as he watches the city he loves he can’t help but think he’s never seen anything so beautiful in his life.
There are people and dogs, and everything that makes a city alive and it’s dirty and chaotic but it’s a thousand times better to the existence that humanity was clinging onto after the sun went out.
He shifts and sits on his roof and just takes everything around him in.
He can't believe he forgot what his hometown was like, what Insomnia was like, but he has. Reaching out once again to the armiger he retrieves an old forgotten friend.
His camera sits perfectly in his hands and holding it up he takes a picture for the first time in forever. Half so he can remember forever and half so he can’t ever take it for granted again.
This is a picture of a city alive.
And he’s going to keep it that way.
XXxxxxXX
He wakes up to the sun on his face a few hours later, beady-eyed and drowsy.
Apparently, he had fallen asleep on the roof, somehow without falling off. Rubbing his eyes, he makes the trip back into the house and starts searching for information. Anything on the time and date.
if he was really in the past, he needed all the information he could get. Was he still in school? Was it summer? Was he already in Crownsguard training? He didn’t know, but he needed to know.
Spotting some bills on the table he scanned for the date.
May M.E. 751
He shifts through the other papers eyes wide. But he gets the same result for all the bills. It’s May of the year seven hundred and fifty-one the year he and Noctis meet in high school and become friends and more than ten years into the past.
The thought is mind-boggling. He knew he was in the past, but to be sixteens in the past was something he hadn’t quite expected, at most he’d thought he'd have a few years before everything went to shit, but this is incredible.
And world changing.
If he can get it right.
Heading back upstairs to his room he finds his old cell phone, an old flip thing that’s charged and has notifications on it. He flips it open and looks through the list pausing at the day momentarily before moving on. Beyond noticing that it’s summer and the fact that it’s Wednesday neither really has any importance to him.
In the old timeline, he’d be focusing on his exercise routine right now but in his current condition that’s no longer necessary…but at the very least he needs to blend in a little. The last thing he needs is to get the attention of anyone important before he’s even accomplished anything, and a scruffy man going around looking for information on an enemy nation will definitely get attention.
Especially one that looks like a Nif.
At the bare minimum, he needs to shave his goatee off and color his hair. Blond is just too noticeable. Heading to the hallway restroom, he gets another surprised when he looks in the mirror and sees himself. Instead of the rough and tumble thirty years old with a goatee, he looks young…like he’s fifteen again.
He sighs and just completely pushes the whole question of why he looks like a fifteen-year-old again to the back of his mind. He wasn’t going to try and figure out the ins and outs of time travel, and he probably will never figure it out anyway so he just accepts it and moves on.
At the very least Noctis will be getting his friend back, Prompto thinks a bit happier. He had been a little afraid that even if he saved the world his friend would grow up even more closed off and introverted than he was in the original timeline.
It’s a small thing but frankly, Prompto is so tired of losing friends that he will do anything to keep the people he cares about safe and happy this time around. Even if it means he can be there in some small way for his friend as he grows into a King and actually gets to live his life.
(Because Noct will live a good long life if Prompto has anything to say about it).
He takes a nice long and more importantly warm shower, something that just wasn’t the same when he lived in the Haven in the old Magitek Factory, especially since he constantly had to be quick in case something came up, such another machine failure or monster attack. He tosses his clothes into the hamper and walks into his room in a towel as he digs through his clothes looking for a set of nondescript clothes that will help him blend in while he makes a trip into town.
He ends having to give up on the idea through when after digging through all the clothes he has in both his dresser and his closet as the only clothes he comes across are bright and colorful. No one wore bright colorful clothes in the future because bright colorful clothes meant daemons could see you more easily.
Resigning himself to getting something more appropriate for his excursion into the outer parts of Insomnia he grabs a faded white t-shirt with a picture of a gold triangle and a pair of forest green cargo shorts. Changing into them he took a seat on his bed and started going through the money he had. He ignored the old wallet on the bedside table knowing full well that it didn’t have cash but credit card that his parents would regularly put money into for both his necessaries and the bills. He wasn’t going to use it if he could help it.
insomnia may not have had the same level of technological advancement as Nifihelm but checking credit receipts was something even the Kingsglavies could do. He’d rather not use anything that led back to him, so he was only going to use the money kept in the armiger.
But it wasn’t a whole lot. Even with his status as a high-profile hunter, money was always hard to come by. Most of the time he’d be given some extra bullets or food for a mission he’d complete. Rarely money, because once the sun stopped raising other things became more valuable such, as food and potions. Still, as Prompto counted through the money again, he felt himself getting frustrated. He only had a few hundred gil. Nowhere even close to the amount he’d need if he wanted to traverse across Insomnia in any sort of reasonable time.
He supposes he can hitch a ride in either one of the Empire’s trains or maybe even in one of the cargo ships going across the ocean between Insomnia and the main land, but the chance of getting caught was something he’d rather avoid if possible.
Maybe take up some hunts?
It wouldn’t be impossible, he has just enough money to get a bus ticket and pay for passage on a ship but after that, he’d be broke. He still has access to the armiger and his own handmade guns so taking a few easy hunts wouldn’t be out of the question, and it would give him both a reason to go asking for information as well as getting some idea of where the major MT factories are....
But what were the drawbacks?
There was the time he would be wasting and the fact that he would have to be careful interacting with any people, but beyond that, there wasn’t anything else he could think of.
As it stood no one knew anything about Prompto Argentum, and no one was watching him, so if he did intend to sneak off and destroy the Empire there was no one who would notice him yet. After he befriended Noctis he’d have to be more careful but for now, he had freedom.
Making up his mind, he went back to the closet and started tossing some clothes into the armiger before he went to his bed and stripped it of its extra blankets and pillows. He went back to the restroom and grabbing his toiletries started going through the medicine cabinet looking for any potions or medicines that might be useful. He found two potions, some painkillers and to his delight, one elixir. Tossing everything into the Armiger and digging through both the fridge and the cabinets for food, he threw the leftovers away and packed the few perishables into his bag while he put all of the canned food into the Armiger. It might not be nowhere close to the food Iggy used to make but it would do for now until he started earning some real money.
Sling his bag over his shoulders he made the rounds around the house making sure all the windows and door were locked. He had no idea when he would be back, and beyond knowing he had to come back for school Prompto felt bittersweet leaving the city he had only gotten to see alive again.
But he comforted himself with the fact that this time, he would be back to see the light again.
Locking the front door, Prompto left, sparing only one backward glance to his childhood home.

Author’s Note: Next time, Prompto the hunter! Prompto starts getting started on getting rid of the Empire and surprises. Someone does notice Prompto's absence!

The Prettiest House Ever?
This month, there has been a rash of blog stories about a newly restored house in Provence. Of course the house is right up my alley, it’s in France – and it was renovated by the team of Alexandre Lafourcade. While he restores the Provencal buildings, Alexandre’s mother, Dominque, restores the gardens. Dominque’s husband and Alexandre’s father, the company’s founder Bruno, sadly passed away last year.
The incredible restoration work of the Lafourcades.
Long time readers know the name Lafourcade. The name first came to the attention of those in the states when Veranda did THAT story on interior designer Ginny Magher. It was Magher’s Lafourcade-restored mas that defined the Provencal look: the long facade with French blue shutters, plane trees, gravel courts, and stucco walls with tile roofs.
Ginny Magher’s “Mas de Baraquet”
When Veranda showed the Magher’s Mas in 2000, it was a universally loved story. Their Provence house became the “one” that everyone desired.
This was the cover which showed Ginny’s Provencal master bedroom with the glorious Manuel Canovas fabric. Mario Buatta famously used this same fabric in French blue in Pat Altschul’s bedroom at her Southerly estate.
The two story entry is a favorite room. Love this!
And this photo of the Magher’s estate shows the genius that is Dominique. Here is the BEFORE shot of a typical pergola.
AFTER: Just a few years later, Ginny’s brand new pergola looks like its been there for 100 years.
The Magher Veranda cover story brought much attention to Ginny, of course, but it also introduced the Lafourcades to America. Their web site showed other fabulous renovations by Bruno, Alexandre and Dominque and over the years their reputations have became legendary due to their exquisite taste and their ability to recreate a masterpiece.
And so, when photos of a newly renovated Mas started showing up on Instagram, people took notice. Was it a new Lafourcade?
Even Ginny herself took notice with this comment on Instagram:
Ginny: “Your house looks very similar to our Mas de BARAQUET in Provence. Ours was a Bruno Lafourcade collaboration. Your Mas de Poiriers is gorgeous. Bravo.”
I guess all Lafourcades-clients feel related to each other. I loved seeing that Ginny commented on the new Mas.
News of the new Mas is spreading fast. It started this way:
This summer while in Provence, popular fashionista Julia Engel of “Gal Meets Glam” paid a visit to the Mas and everyone on Instagram looked and then did a double take.
The house is gorgeous.
Beyond gorgeous.
Forget about millenniums and forget about contemporary design. Put all that aside. Just clear your mind of anything “nu.”
This is classic French design. Country French at its best.
And this house will make you remember why you ever loved French design to begin with. And, this house will make you wish you had never left it all behind.
It’s always the same lesson we have to relearn over and over again: classic is best and nothing much can top it.
Besides the photos that Julia took of the house HERE, there is a fascinating interview with the owner of the mas on “The Glam Pad.” HERE.
OK.
So with all those stories already written, what is left for me to blog about?
Usually when a few popular bloggers have already written about a house that I particularly like, I will walk away from the story in order to avoid repetition.
BUT - there is my “Mother” rule.
“The Mother Rule”
If a previously written story is something I think my own mother would love to read about and if I know my mother never read about it before and never would read about it unless I wrote about it….
then I’ll write about it.
The Mother Rule.
I proved this theory to myself.
I posted a photo of a bedroom from this new Mas on my Instagram and I immediately got a phone call from my mother, Betty Rae. (To read all about the infamous Betty Rae, go HERE.)
Shortly after I posted the photo from the Mas on my instagram, Betty Rae calls me: “Have you shown this bedroom to your sister Cathy?” And more: “Be sure you send this photo to Cathy!” Betty Rae is now 87. She doesn’t quite realize that Cathy already sees all my Instagrams regardless – no need to mail her the photos.
But that’s besides the point. Betty Rae’s excitement about the photo from the Mas showed me I had to write the story for her, despite the fact that several other popular blogs had already written about the house.
And then this happened:
I found a new treasure trove of photos on the Mas’ rental web site that hadn’t been seen on those other blogs yet…
So, Betty Rae, this one is for you!
The mas is called “Le Mas des Poiriers” and it is located right outside Avignon on the Isle de la Motte – an actual tiny island formed by the branches of the river. The mas is located on 65 acres, filled with pear orchards, hence its name. There are 7 bedrooms, plus 2 more in a guest house. It’s all available to lease (details below.) But don’t think you are going to check in on a Tuesday and leave on a Wednesday. It doesn’t work that way.
This is a house to cherish lovingly and slowly.
The interiors were done by SBLong Interiors of Dallas & Connecticut. Talk about a dream job!
But hard.
I can’t imagine how difficult it must have been for Susan B. Long to completely furnish a working house for a large family – and to do it all from across the globe. The owners of the Mas have five children and their numbers are rapidly expanding with in-laws. The family is as beautiful as the house – large, loving, close, philanthropic, and adventure-seeking. The family has lived all over the world, literally, for different work assignments. Moving so often, they have owed a number of homes and over the years, at least five of their houses have been decorated by SBLong Interiors.
This house in Connecticut designed by Susan Long is the family’s main base now, after a life time of living abroad. Definitely not country French, the house is very sophisticated, very chic, very classic traditional decor. HERE.
A previous second home designed by Susan Long was this mountain home in Deer Valley Utah. HERE.
Instead of French antiques, Long used a lot of English antiques in their mountain home.
What’s the connection to Provence?
The family had rented vacation houses in Provence and one summer they stayed in the perfect house. It was large enough for the family and its location was secluded yet close to antique shopping and great food. As luck would have it, that mas was for sale.
Who you going to call?
The Lafourcades!
When the family decided to take on the challenge and restore the Mas, they knew just who was up for the job.
Alexandre and his team renovated the house while Dominque completely recreated the extensive gardens, swimming pool, and tennis courts.
The Mas has been an new adventure for the family - now dealing with children marrying and younger children leaving for college – this house will be a place they all come to be together again.
The renovation by Alexandre involved moving the front door to create a new grand foyer and stone staircase. Rooms were reworked, ceilings were raised and stone floors were installed on the first floor, with antique terra cotta tiles going upstairs. Much needed closets were added, many flanking the beds. Bathrooms are all white marble. There’s a new master suite along with a mud room in a barn that for centuries had just a dirt floor. Additionally, there are newly installed fireplace mantels throughout. The house is filled with antiques that were handpicked in France by SBLong and the owner. Tough duty, I know! And note: not everything was bought – some pieces were inherited with the sale of the house.
The one design choice that proved genius was the fabric. All fabrics were purchased from Pierre Frey. Taken together as a whole, these French prints create a certain mood. Any other fabric would have looked too trendy, too en-vogue, too English. The Pierre Freys are the correct choice and make perfect sense. Another SBLong fabulous yet important decision.
The last step has been the landscaping which was installed by Dominque Lafourcade. A wisteria covered walkway leads to the newly built pool and a rose covered arbor lays on an axis off the living room. A tennis court now has its own charming house while the old barn was renovated for staff apartments.
Here is how the Mas looked when it was first purchased. Pretty, but in need up an update. Originally the shutters were burgundy - today, they are French blue. The open air building to the left is now the orangery.
The garden plan drawn by Dominique Lafoucade. On the plan you can see the cypress allees and the rose arbors. The swimming pool is enclosed by foliage and walls. The pool is new – before it was on the front lawn. Behind the house is the large barn which now holds offices and apartments for the staff.
An original aerial photo of the property before renovation. You can see the original pool here in the front yard. Brilliant idea to move it! This move frees up the large lawn to become all garden designed by Dominique. The new pool is off the kitchen to the right of the house.
A before view. The plane trees are so leafy you can barely see the house. But here, you can see the original barn behind the house.
The approach to the Mas with the newly groomed plane trees.
AFTER: The shutters are now blue. Notice the blue and white fabrics on the furniture – stripes and checks. Gravel terrace.
This is the corner between the long facade and the kitchen facade.
The front view – the large arched window is now the living room. At the very left – the other large window is the orangery. Many of the photos are not completely staged yet. You can see the step ladder was left out in view – but that’s ok. It will be forever before a magazine properly photographs the house. We can wait.
This allee of tall cypress was added by Dominque to accentuate the center axis of the house.
This makes a natural place for outdoor parties – one long table between the cypress. Seriously pretty.
The party given here designed by A Matthew Robbins Design Company HERE.
And behind the table – you can see the rose covered archway which will take another year or two to grow out over the arch.
The kitchen facade with a Provencal fountain.
This area of the house overlooks the new swimming pool and the sunflower fields beyond it.
The corner view – love the furniture with the stripes and checks in blue.
Flowering plants were added to these pots.
A sitting area. These stone posts act as gates throughout different areas of the estate.
The enclosed pool. There are a pair of the stone posts at the front and rear gates.
The view towards the sunflower fields.
A closer view of the row of chaises with the blue pillows and towels.
The original barn across from the house, where the new front door is located. The shutters were kept the original color in homage. A new fountain was added here.
The staircase with stone steps. Love the red and white check in the window.
The fabric on the table is "Erasmo"
The other direction. A collection of creamware tureens.
The view from the second level down. Notice there is a fireplace in the entry and a library on the landing. When this photo was taken, all the curtains had not yet been hung. Understand – this house was just finished. Just! The owners and designer have been posting photos of the installation for months now. It was a huge undertaking. Be sure to look at their instagrams (posted at the end) for all the before and during photos!!
Notice down the first floor hall, the bench in checks with a runner underneath.
The view of the library in the landing.
And a view at dusk with the curtains now hung.
The main salon – with cream sofas and red and blue accents.
Notice all the antique portraits in oil flanking the fireplace.
Looking into the room. Notice the Lafourcade treatment on the shelves. Jib door past the shelves leads to the orangery.
A vignette. Love that painting. The curtains are beautiful, so full and lush. Notice they are lined in check fabric!! The details!!!
Another vignette. The clock was inherited with the house. And I love how Susan Long brought in color through the lamp shades!! Love the miniature with the round, gilt frame on the side table. All the tiny details!!!
Instead of a table, there is a square, tufted ottoman in navy.
The fireplace in the large salon.
The next room to the large salon is the dining room with its two crystal chandeliers. The large table doubles as a library table. This is just too pretty for words!
Notice the wood doors between these rooms are painted custom colored French blue.
Whoa!!!!!!! Gorgeous. Absolutely gorgeous!!!!!
Blue and white toile in the dining room. Notice the chairs with the check arms and blue trim. All tiny, but hugely important details. Bravo to SBLong Interiors!
The view from the opposite side. Along the back wall is a collection of creamware.
Throughout the house, Long uses collections of plates along with art work. Notice the sconces.
The flowers in the pot differ from week to week. Here, blossoming branches in spring.
The curtains throughout the house are just beautiful. All are lined, mostly with a check fabric.
Instead of a pedestal – the bust is placed on a small table.
I love the check on the chairs – you can never have too many checks in one house! With such a large family – you need large tables with lots of chairs.
Off the dining room is the family room, kitchen, and breakfast room. Notice the set of stairs behind the family room.
A vignette in the family room – showing the beautiful fabrics.
The large kitchen with two islands that double as extra tables.
The large kitchen. Notice the two sinks.
Of course! It’s France! Those pots!
A view in the kitchen. Behind the kitchen is the butler’s pantry which is in the former staff kitchen.
A view at dusk. The table is all set. Notice the sconces that flank the opening into the kitchen.
A large wood island divides the breakfast room from the kitchen. Charming curtains!
A perfect TV viewing room for watching world soccer tournaments. It’s France!
The mud room in what was once the barn.
Looking back into the hall behind the living room.
Prettiest mud room I’ve ever seen. Love the blue and white checks. Love the lantern-sconce. Fabulous painting!!
The living room is at the right and at the left is the orangery. I think this was once a open garage/barn.
The tall orangery. Two story with a balcony. Usually these rooms in Provencal houses are typically the former barns.
Love the fabric on the chairs. More identical chairs are set up outside the orangery. The owner said in an interview this was one of her favorite rooms.
And this room – with custom colored fabric and a wonderful painting with a sofa with a velvet cushion. The custom colored fabric is the Le Manach pattern "Victor Hugo Bordures." Guess where this room is! I don’t know! No other photos! I looked! No fair!
And the charming laundry room. With a family of nine, you need lots of towels!
The Bedrooms:
The master suite. Look at that bed!!! What a canopy. And notice the Swedish bench at the foot of the bed. Hidden between the bed and the sofa is a TV cabinet. Closets on both sides of the bed – added after the fact.
Apparently, this was all the fabric the owner could get of this pattern. So, the canopy was made of plain fabric. But I think this is perfect – I love the plain cream fabric – it sets off all the patterned fabric.
Before the canopy was completed, this photograph was taken. Such a pretty room with all the large windows. Corner rooms make for lots of windows.
Apparently this was in the area that was once the barn and it is the room above what is now the living room. This room connects to the upper floor of the orangery through its closet.
Two French chairs in check face the Swedish settee.
The fireplace with two caned chairs flanking it. Pretty trumeau. The bathroom is seen through the open door on the right.
The master bathroom with an antique armoire and tub – right in the middle of the room. Why didn’t they close that door? Whoever took these photos for the rental agency needs to go back to close that door! LOL!!
Notice the wainscot in the bathroom – and in a lot of rooms in the house. It’s painted on!! Details, details, details. I’m telling you Susan Long did a fabulous job!
Ah! Thank you! The door is now closed. The shower is incredible with its matched marble.
White marble. Terra cotta tiles.
Now think about all the bathrooms that people are doing today using every kind of tile there is, just to be “different” – why? Isn’t the white marble the perfect choice?
Can’t afford marble slabs like this – go for marble subway tiles. It’s as effective as this, almost as fabulous, and it’s just as classy and chic.
Guest Room – well, this might be the prettiest of the lot. Hard to judge. The designer said she loved the peach fabric that was used to line the canopy. I love the canopy – SBLong designs for the canopies are incredible. I love the curves on her canopies. And notice the lantern – all the details, all the minute details, and Susan Long still took the time to put the trim on the lantern chain. Amazing work.
Can I stay in this room? Even if I’m not a daughter?
I promise to be neat!
From the front – antique tufted settee. And I love all the seagrass rugs in all the rooms.
Notice how beautifully placed the Tree of Life fabric is – and remember, Susan Long lives in DALLAS!!!!!
Notice how perfectly the headboard’s tree melds into the canopy’s tree of life. Perfection.
Dallas!!!! She lives in Dallas!!!!
But this is my favorite – the oval portrait of a lady and her cat? or dog? between the luscious curtains.
There’s more!!! Look how pretty this side of the room is – the old doors, the antique mantel, the trumeau, the antique chairs. This room must be in an older section of the house with its beamed ceiling.
I’m sorry – there can’t be too many photos of this gorgeous bedroom!
Bathroom with marble and more marble.
Well, this guest room is another favorite. The check is in dark and light French blue. The blue velvet pillows are so pretty. The alcove with tis Pierre Frey fabric is flanked by two closets.
Love this room.
Wait I was wrong!! Can I stay in here instead? I’ll just move my own bags. Don’t mean to be a bother. Gracias!!!
The vanity chair – notice the check trim. No detail is too small for Susan B. Long.
I love all her velvet pillows and the silk shades!
The reflection of the bed in the antique mirror. Another beautiful collection of plates!
Bedroom #4. This one is much larger than many of the other bedrooms. The closets are painted French blue.
Though it’s larger – the ceiling is lower and beamed. This must be in what was once an older part of the house?
Stylized for the photos. Perfect pillows. I love all the collections of plates that Susan Long used on the walls. Love how she hangs them, too!
The bathroom in the large bedroom. Notice the pretty marble treatment.
The water closets are often hidden behind doors with glass panes. The details!
Another view of the bathroom off the large bedroom with the beamed ceiling.
Bedroom #5 – this is a smaller one with two flanking closets. Just darling!!! Again, love the pillows and the Pierre Frey fabrics.
Notice the painted base molding – with the blue stripe. Love the way the walls were painted in this way.
And the focal point – this luscious velvet chair with blue check. Notice how the check lines the curtains too.
Another darling bathroom with white marble, towel heaters, and other quiet luxury.
Bedroom #6 - A small bedroom on the corner which makes it extra bright and light with its many windows. Such a pretty ribbon fabric matched with a tiny check.
I love two things especially – all the beds are made with white cotton duvets and sheets AND I love all the seagrass on the floor. Some seagrass is layered with an antique rug, but most times, it’s left in all its glory. The corner room with the extra windows. Pretty trumeau.
A closer view of the darling chair and beautiful Pierre Frey fabric.
A Jack and Jill bathroom between the two smaller bedrooms. That marble! This bathroom is one of the owner’s favorites, she says in Instagram.
Bedroom #7. Pretty antique sofa. Beautiful fabric wall behind bed.
The armoire and chair across from the bed.
Off the front of the house is the guest cottage. You can see it here.
The utterly charming Guest Cottage – it apparently is the original house on the property. It was renovated to accommodate two guest rooms.
And here is the guest cottage, in what was once the kitchen.
There are two bedrooms in the guest house. This one is gorgeous, of course! Love this one so much!!!!!
The chintz and the blue and white check and gray chest and pink pillow – what more could you want?
And the second bedroom in the guest cottage.
Ready to go? Or do you just want to visit virtually? Either way, I know you had a good time.

A new direction
Jill & I had worked hard at our business & seen it grow from a small enterprise in a tiny garage in Central Ave, to a thriving company in premises in Port Road. We had taken on extra staff & were producing signs for companies on a National basis. One of our clients was Michael Hill Jeweller who I got to know pretty well. It helped that, as I said previously, that his wife had taught me art at High School, even so they demanded a high standard of workmanship the challenge of which I thrived on, & I took a great deal of pride knowing that we were supplying a top product for their new shops & refits. At one stage we were doing a shop every month & at the beginning of 1998 they gave me a forward plan in January for the rest of the year!. Additionally we had other top clients like Foodstuffs & Lion Breweries plus we also contracted to a number of large companies in Auckland & Wellington. Working Nationally put us in contact with many other sign companies in New Zealand & we built a great network of installers & also enhanced our reputation.
Jill was heavily involved with Zonta, having given away her work with Plunket & the Whangarei Childcare Centre & as the girls had grown up now she was no longer involved with PTA. Even so she never felt as though Whangarei was home & she surprised me one day when she suggested that we should maybe look to buy a house in the South Island. I had always loved it down there but I had to stress that whilst I was keen on the idea I wasn't so keen of living too far down the island. So in about the Easter of 2000 we went to Christchurch to visit Jill's sister & husband & I also believe at that time that Jill's eldest daughter Dulcie was living with them as well so it was a well timed visit.
While we were there we scouted around for properties, but it was only on a morning call in to see Jill's cousin Sharon that things got serious. Sharon's husband Steve was the main mover & shaker at Harcourts Realty & he basically said "look, houses are not gong to get any cheaper you may as well buy now", & promptly dug out a few properties for us to look at. Jill was rather struck on a place called Woodend which is just north of Christchurch...she liked the name. Long story short, we found a perfect place there, made an offer, it was accepted & we purchased it. It would be 5 years before we could move in ourselves & in the interim it was rented.
We flew back down to take possession of the place 6 weeks later & stayed long enough to take a video inside & out.....just to remind us. On visits to Christchurch we would often park at the bottom of the driveway & look at it thinking, 'one day'.
Back to reality & back to Whangarei. Things carried on pretty well as they had since that fateful night some years earlier, except my wardrobe had grown somewhat & I was now doing my own makeup. Whenever we went away, which we did often, I would always accompany Jill when she went on a shopping spree, especially (of course) when she was looking for something for herself. Whilst she looked around for a new dress or top, I would be browsing myself & would often find something I liked & say out loud "do you think this would look OK on Lynda ?". Jill would often answer one way or the other & it always amused us that we could talk openly like that without anyone knowing our secret. Jill would sometimes alter my skirts as quite often they would be too long, she always said I wouldn't suit a dress, which is funny as these days I have quite a few & love wearing them.
All this was fine but for the fact that we had Jill's mother to think about. Dot was an incredibly inquisitive woman & she knew that something was 'going on' & if there was anything she hated more it was the not knowing. Jill of course was paranoid about her finding out & would almost faint with anxiety should I show my face downstairs at night even briefly, such was her fear of discovery. I had a solution to change the sliding door that adjoined our two parts of the house, & install a solid lockable one. Jill was quite agreeable to this idea but, oh my God, when her Mum found out there was hell to pay & she didn't speak to me properly for weeks after. Looking back, I see what a terrible snub it was, but I believed that it was worth it to ease Jill's fears. Dot was also of the habit of taking a bath now & then & as the only tub was upstairs in our area she would use that. I honestly believe to this day that whilst we were at work she took the odd peep into our room, whether it went further is anyone's guess, but suffice to say I recon she knew all about me but you see she couldn't say anything, for to do so would have left herself open to question. It must have driven her nuts.
Don't get me wrong, I loved Dot. She was without a doubt one of those folks you meet & never forget, as she would say "she was as funny as a fart!". That's funny ha,ha by the way. What was funnier is that while all this was playing out, my father in law Terry would be downstairs reading a book, smoking a fag with the National program playing away on the radio. In those moments he was oblivious to everything, I often think a bomb could have gone off & he wouldn't have moved a muscle. He was a lovely man & I loved him dearly, he was a mentor & friend, his wise counsel often got me through some tough times & I will never forget him.
Some Dotisms: "its all the same but its different". "listen to those shishados". "come on, lets get it over with" I could probably think of more but not right now, but I know one thing for sure.....Abba's Dancing Queen will be going hard out in heaven. :)
next time, my parents in all this & selling our house in Whangarei.
