my weight loss journey story

Everyone has a “something has to change” moment in their weight loss journey and this picture was part of mine.

It was July of 2019 and I was 23 years old. My thighs were chafing, I was out of breath from walking up a hill to sit down at a concert, and I hated every picture we took this day. I remember it took a couple days for my inner thighs to heal from the chafing and I was miserable.

I was about 258 pounds, I wore a 2X shirt and a 16 in jeans if I ever squeezed myself into them, most of the time it was just stretchy pants.

My mental health was horrible, I let people walk all over me, I stayed friends who people who were not good for me (lol my ex bff is in this picture), I ate takeout for pretty much every meal, I was thousands of dollars in credit card debt from buying stuff just to feel something, I wanted to be loved but I wasn’t ready to let myself be loved or be vulnerable, and I hated how I looked.

Physically I didn’t do anything. I would sleep in, arrive to work right on time, sit at my desk, go home at 5 with takeout, drink some wine, and watch tv. No walks, no gym, no hiking, no physical activity.

I dreaded summertime even though it was secretly my favorite season. I wanted to feel the sunshine on my skin but the second I had any exposed skin (like in this picture), I spent the whole day adjusting my clothes, worrying about how my cellulite and rolls looked, and extra hyper aware of the space I was taking up. I felt so self conscious. I didn’t wear a swimsuit for years.

My hands and feet were always swollen. I wore a size 11 ring and my feet would swell up in shoes so even a women’s 10 didn’t fit all day. My acne was persistent.

I wouldn’t make any changes for many months.

COVID hits the following March and I become hyper aware of my body and my health and how I can’t live like this.

I start going for long walks. I educate myself on what calories are and why protein is important and start to learn to cook. I purchase a stationary bike. I’m still too shy to go to the gym.

By the end of 2020, I have lost about 30 pounds and weigh 224. I meet Clay in February of 2021 and I weigh 207.2 pounds. I keep working on myself, flirting with him at work, and focusing on learning to love myself before I let someone in. I’m going to the gym every morning and lots of long walks.

By the end of 2021, I weigh 174 pounds. My then lowest weight. I maintain this for a few months and keep eating clean and exercising but I begin to eat takeout with Clay at work, often drinking more than I should.

In July of 2022 I weigh in at 176 but I begin taking Lexapro for my anxiety. It starts off by helping, then my appetite increases like crazy.

Clay makes a move in September 2022 and I’m like “oh I should probably be on birth control” and we start going on lots of food centered dates.

By our first anniversary thanks to my medications and a huge increase in eating out, I weigh 222.6 pounds.

We’re going to the gym every morning together at this point but our eating isn’t healthy. After talking with my therapist, I go off of Lexapro.

I maintain for about 7 months at 205.

November 2024, something clicks and we start meal prepping more together. We go for a long walk every Sunday. We only go out to eat once per week. We do more active dates.

Today in March of 2025, I weigh 172.6. I wear a size 6.5 ring, my feet are a 9, I wear a 6 in jeans and my top is a S or M. I love summer and wear what I want. My thighs don’t chafe. I love myself and I’m loved by the sweetest man alive and I plan on spending the rest of my life with him. I have no credit card debt and I know that buying things won’t fill the void inside you from not being happy with your life. I’m really active and I feel my best when my body is moving. I don’t drink that often and when I do it’s not very much. I’ve gotten rid of friends who treated me like dirt and only allow a handful of people access to my time and energy. My mental health has vastly improved.

Losing weight changed my life. I learned to love myself and in that process, let myself be loved. I’m happier and healthier and excited for the future.

A while ago, he watched a one-man show on a variety show, describing the current workplace situation of contemporary young people. Xiao Zhan had opened a studio and worked before entering the entertainment industry. #02 The flavor of life lies in the details

In early June, Xiao Zhan took a short vacation and returned to his hometown of Chongqing. He loved walking very much, and one night he walked for several hours, visiting old streets, People’s Liberation Monument, and even around the place where he used to work.

In 2014, the 23-year-old Xiao Zhan graduated from university and worked as a designer in a design studio. Two and a half days later, Xiao Zhan left Chongqing and returned to Beijing due to work, then rushed to Shanghai, and then in turn to France. This time he brought his parents too. This was a long in coming family trip, within a week, they traveled from France to Switzerland and back to France. Every detail of the trip was magnified, they were happy, bickering, or just walking for a while, “it was all very vivid.”

#03 Stay innocent, stay complex

Halfway through the interview, Xiao Zhan suddenly said that he was ambivalent about long interviews. On the one hand, he was worried that he had not grown up enough and would show ignorance in the conversation, but on the other hand, he wanted to explore some subtle feelings through the conversation because he felt that he was not good at using words to record them.

Observation, feeling, understanding and expression are the essentials of why actors can bring creativity.

“Dialogue is also muscle memory.” Xiao Zhan said, “Although I am very introverted, I am not antisocial. Because I think actors need to learn to express, express your inner thoughts, and digest the content conveyed to you by the other party.”

Before the filming of “Sunshine By My Side” started, he met with the main creators and held several script meetings to deepen his understanding of one another and the characters. In the early stages of “The Legend of Zang Hai”, the producer also mentioned that he would discuss the script in detail and talk about a scene with a lot of his own understanding.

Xiao Zhan is not an actor with a professional background, when he first entered the industry and filmed “Battle Through the Heavens” and “The Wolf”, he had strong doubts and asked himself, am I suitable? The constant negativity and self-refuting made him lose self-confidence.

Sometimes he would be asked what he would be doing now if he had not participated in the talent show, debuted, or entered the entertainment industry at the age of 23. He had thought about it, but did not look back.

ELLE: During the break, will you think about anything on the set? Xiao Zhan: Of course, I remember that just a few days after filming was completed, I was still dreaming that I was still filming, and the director and I were still discussing how to say that phrase on set? How to handle that scene?

ELLE: Do you actually miss the atmosphere on the set? Xiao Zhan: I like it very much, because I like the feeling of everyone creating together and working together to get something done.

How did this change occur? ELLE: In several interviews, you mentioned that you like to play roles that “can convey energy.” Why do you have such a preference? Xiao Zhan: Because I think this is the life of the character. ELLE: So do you think performance is a form of communication? Xiao Zhan: Yes, you can say that, I think it’s great to say that, (performance) is a bridge to communicate with the audience. Just like when a drama is broadcasting, I will read some of the audience’s comments and impressions after watching it, and I feel that they have a very rich feelings about the work. When I see some comments that are exactly the same as my thoughts during the filming, I will feel very amazed, as if the bridge is really connected, we don’t know each other in life and have never communicated with each other, but he suddenly understands my thoughts then, I’ll just feel that, oh, acting is a beautiful and magical thing.

ELLE: Do you watch some science fiction movies, TV series, and literary works? Xiao Zhan: Yes, I used to like watching “The Three-Body Problem”, I have actually watched some science fiction movies recently, the American drama “Constellation”, and recently I am watching “Dark Matter”, which is about infinite flow and parallel time and space. Because I think maybe there really is a parallel time and space. Every choice you make will split out a different parallel time and space.

ELLE: Then will you imagine Xiao Zhan in parallel time and space? Xiao Zhan: I will really wonder, for example, is he still an actor? Maybe yes, but is he still filming now? Is he still singing now? Or is he also a designer? Is he an employee or is he his own boss? (Laughs) Really, I will.

ELLE: As for the future, what do you think it will be like? Xiao Zhan: Wow, I feel that the world may return to its original nature when the time comes instead, maybe the world will become a better place, and people will return to very essential communication.

ELLE: This is very interesting. Why do you think so? Xiao Zhan: Anyway, at least now I have a little aversion with this kind of ubiquitous Internet, when we were young, there were no mobile phones, everyone just chatted during meals, my friends would all come downstairs to play, hide and seek, and play various games, I feel that that time was very precious instead.

ELLE: Will there still be an actor career by then? Xiao Zhan: I think there will be. I believe that as long as life goes on, drama will continue. Because everyone needs an outlet, emotional resonance and sustenance, be it images or sounds. So I feel that even if the world is destroyed, as long as there are still people, drama will definitely exist.

Yeah, I remember I tried in 2021 to see if my local sexual health clinic could help me out bc I was on Depo-Provera (medroxyprogesterone) but it wasn't fully working, and my nurse practitioner at the time refused to send me to a gynecologist on the basis that I'd just seen a psychiatrist a few months prior. I don't remember if I had to be within a certain age range or have to be using it for contraceptive purposes instead of for medical reasons (I'm v gay and v single but my unmedicated periods are incredibly painful) or what, but the sexual health clinic told me they couldn't help me.

The fight to even get Depo-Provera in the first place, as I was getting at in my tags on that other post, happened in 2019 with the NP who was in charge of my primary care before the one who was acting like gynecologists and psychiatrists are the same thing. That NP didn't want to prescribe me Depo-Provera just bc she didn't want to and had to leave the room to go get a book to look up side effects just so she'd have a reason to give as to why she didn't want me on it, and even then it was only like "It says here that, uh... your acne has a chance of getting worse" but I refused to budge and told her that if my acne gets worse on Depo, then we'll reassess and try something else. She didn't have any arguments left, so she prescribed it and I stayed on it for 3 years.

I ended up getting a referral to a gynecologist from a different NP (a colleague of my regular NP who was busy so this other NP saw me instead) in 2022, so I'm now off Depo-Provera and on Lupron Depot (leuprolide) to control my cycle with Estrace (estradiol) and Movisse (norethindrone) as hormone add-back. I haven't had any periods in almost a year!! My gynecologist and I are gonna be doing surgery in October to find out if I have endometriosis, and if I do have endo and she's able to remove it in the surgery, then we'll see about me trying to have unmedicated periods again so I don't have to worry about this stuff for a lil while :)

The South Korea anti-acne dermal patch market size is valued at USD 55.2 million in 2021 and is expected to register a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.1% from 2022 to 2030. Acne Vulgaris is a multifactorial skin disease that causes lesions on areas of the body with a large concentration of oil glands, such as face, chest, neck and back. It is a common disease of the pilosebaceous unit, involving abnormalities in sebum production, follicular epithelial desquamatin and bacterial proliferation. Hello hello!! I saw your post about being 3 months of a low dose of T and seeing if I can ask you some questions and how you’re feeling now (since it was dated in 2020)?

In 2019 I was taking .5ml weekly of T for 3 months and it made me pretty depressed so I stopped. I am now taking a lower dose (.2ml weekly and may go to .1ml if .2ml is too much for me).

I know how the effects are with a higher dosage and wondering how much change you’ve seen with a lower dose? Do you feel like it is pretty slow? My voice changed a LOT with only being on T for 3 months, and wondering how much it’ll change while taking a lower dosage!

I know genetic play a big roll but would love to hear more about your experience taking a lower dose :)

I started low dose in March of 2021. This coming March I'll be a year on T. It has been pretty slow going.

I'm using a compounded cream and not injections, so that probably makes a difference too. Right now I'm using a 50 mg cream once daily; Google says that's a "typical" dose but idk. The two attempts we've made at increasing my dose higher than that have led to negative side effects (mainly mood swings and the return of my periods) so for now I'm sticking with the 50 mg dose.

Honestly things have been really slow for the past few months. The first 3-6 months, I saw a lot of changes really fast, especially to my voice and body hair. But since then? Very little. It feels like I'm maintaining the changes I've already gotten, but not seeing anything new beyond having more acne. I also feel like my hair at the front of my head looks a little thinner than it used to? But I'm not certain at this point. My hairline is definitely different though.

I've seen almost every effect that T is supposed to cause, just slowly.

To put it this way: the family members that I live with and those I see most often don't know that I'm on T, and it isn't obvious to them yet. They've noticed my voice change and that I have more facial hair than I used to (I had a good bit pre-T)...and they've attributed those changes to allergies, colds, and the hormonal disorder that I have, and I haven't corrected them. If anyone has any idea of the truth, they aren't speaking up (and they totally would give me hell for it if they knew). So yes, it's really slow.

I get gendered as male occasionally in public and at work, but I don't really pass 100%. And passing was never my goal when I started T, so that's mostly fine with me. Mostly.

I am happy with the changes I've had and I'm hopeful that more will come with time. But I do get frustrated sometimes that things aren't happening faster? I've considered recently switching to injections in the future to see if changes will happen faster and if my T levels will be more consistent on my blood tests, but I'm still undecided on that for now.

Combination Skin: What To Use and How To Use It

Combination skin is a real thing. Not quite dry, not quite oily; knowing how to care for it isn’t always easy. This common but sometimes confusing skin type marries areas of the face that are in oil production overdrive with areas that are dry, forming a patchwork-like texture on the skin’s surface.  Simply, combination skin is out of balance, so sourcing beauty products to cater to it requires a little vigilance.

Alina Roytberg - co-founder of skincare company, Fresh - laid down the facts on this very skin type. She described the main indicators to include: “an oily T-zone (forehead, down the nose to the chin) with dry cheeks, or skin that’s [generally] oilier in summer and drier in winter.” If you ever wondered how your skin came to be this way, Roytberg will tell you that genetics plays a leading role, above environmental factors and personal lifestyle. Each step of your skincare regime can be curated to work in favour of both surfaces at play, where harmonising your skin’s hydration levels is key.

FACT: According to Roytberg, normal and dry skin types tend to lean more toward a combination skin type when you’re on your period.``

Your cleanser should serve as the backbone of your regime by manipulating the condition of your skin regardless of what products are placed on top. Choose cleansing products that work with, not against, your multi-faceted skin type; products that replenish and balance your skin’s natural oils. “Using a good, gentle cleanser twice a day,” Roytberg suggests, “will help cleanse the skin without over-drying or leaving any residue behind.”

Replacing oil with oil is also an effective way to rebalance moisture levels across the board – I love Frank Body’s Anti-Makeup Cleansing Oil. Alternately, opt for a gentle cream solution like Clarins’ Cleansing Milk containing extracts of soothing yellow gentian. Avoid cleansers that contain high levels of salicylic acid because this additive can further dry out the skin. On the contrary, cleansing balms that boast a thick, buttery consistency may feel a little over the top against areas that are producing generous amounts of sebum as it is.

TIP: “I recommend using a cream cleanser like Fresh’s Soy Face Cleanser after an oil-based [one] as a double cleansing ritual… to ensure skin is fully cleansed,” Roytberg says.

To provide an even deeper clean to the skin, throw in an exfoliating product once or twice a week. By doing so, you’ll relieve the build-up of oil and bacteria, reducing the likelihood of developing acne. It’s a common misconception that the larger the pores, the more sebum secreted. Roytberg instead says this theory probably works in reverse, in that the secretion of sebum itself can enlarge pores. “If sebum can’t discharge freely, pores can become wider and more clearly visible, and pimples may form.” Regardless of whether you opt for an acidic exfoliant or granular liquid, skin will look and feel more even with the removal of surface-level grime and dead skin cells. LUMA’s Crushed Pearl Facial Polish boasts botanical grape seed oil – an ingredient praised for its nourishing and protective abilities when used on the skin. A toner can also be a great addition to your cleanser routine when the correct product is used. Moisten a cotton pad in your toner of choice and mark out the most oil-prone areas of your face only. Naturally hydrating ingredients, like cucumber in Mario Badescu’s Special Cucumber Lotion, will act as a suitable replacement. Even the oiliest of T-zones can still hide underlying dryness.

Tip: The further up an ingredient is listed on a product, the higher the content level of that ingredient will be. You can ensure you’re getting the most out of key ingredients before buying.

You’ll be misguided in believing a rich cream will act as a cure-all, since your oiliest areas need no such thing. When it comes to moisturiser, a lightweight formula containing hydrating hyaluronic acid should cover all bases (oily or otherwise). Prior to sleep, apply a refreshing gel cream that will sooth the skin and absorb in a flash, like Tarte Cosmetics Rainforest of The Sea Drink of H2O Hydrating Boost Moisturizer or Glow Recipe’s Watermelon Glow Pink Juice Moisturizer. Come morning, opt for a shine controlling moisturiser like Bioderma’s new Sébium Shine-Control Moisturiser or La Roche-Posay Effaclar Mat.

TIP: Combination Skin or not, it’s important to always apply sun protection. Prior to makeup application, apply an SPF. Invisible Zinc’s Sheer Defence Facial Moisturiser SPF50 is great for combination skin as it sits incognito under foundation without the greasiness or scent of a traditional sunscreen.

As with moisturiser application, multi-masking is the way to go. Apply residue-removing charcoal, like that in FORMULA 10.0.6’s Take Back Control Oil-Controlling Mud Mask, to oily areas. This charcoal and cacao hybrid is designed to decongest pores and hydrate the skin respectively. Likewise, Fresh’s Umbrian Clay Purifying Mask can be applied to the T-Zone, while the brand’s hydrating Rose Face Mask be applied along the cheeks. If you’d prefer a sheet mask, The Body Shop’s Seaweed Balance Sheet Mask is an easy one-size-fits-all option that contains refreshing aloe vera your whole face will benefit from.

TIP: If acne is a concern, manage your combination skin first before reaching for acne-targeted solutions. Until then, minimise your use of silicones to allow pores to breathe easily.
