Hi I just thought to let people know the Philippines is having our own fight right now.
Currently our government has just shut down a major news network and is threating press freedom. They’ve been denied of a franchise renewal by our congress even though it has been proven that they did nothing wrong.
Not to menion a Law has been passed that threatens our basicc human rights. Our economy is shaking and the Covid cases here have not even flat lined yet.
We are being ruled by a man who puts his personal interests before his country. We can potentially be a province of fucking China.
Tangina mo Duterte sana masaya ka 🖕🏼

ABS-CBN DILIGENT
ABS- CBN is the one of the most first telecom that came in television it was 70 years but many kinds of issues came about their renewal about in their franchising. When the controversy was due to the expiration of its congressional franchise on May 04, 2020 followed by a ceased and desist order CDO issued by the National Telecommunications Commission. Then now there were had a rebuttal about there renewal about in there franchise and about that they were saying that they have paid their debt because they paid their taxes and they were settled by Bureau of Internal Revenue. When there were Annual basis that they paid assets and most cases those are different simple competition its about to grow fast. But still they have to process there franchising in case that they give to another company. And there were changing their analog to digital. In the face of changing governments, despite natural disasters, and amid rapidly evolving technologies, ABS-CBN remains steadfast in its commitment to serve the Filipino,” the October 2017 document said. The organization is continuously evolving to provide better service through radio, free TV, digital terrestrial TV, cable TV, film, movie, music, publishing, online, events, licensed products, cash remittance, and various advocacies. Allies of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte in the House of Representatives voted on Friday to deny the renewal of ABS-CBN’s broadcast franchise, affirming a government order to shut down the country’s largest television network in a move critics say is a major blow to press freedom in the Southeast Asian nation. The last time ABS-CBN was shut down by the government was in 1972, the beginning of the 21-year martial rule under the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos. It would reopen only in 1986, when the strongman was ousted by the EDSA People Power Revolution. While there are many who want ABS-CBN to continue its broadcasts and remain in operations, there are also those who would like to see the network shut down because of the many alleged violations committed by it. ABS-CBN was operates various platform including domestic television, radio networks worldwide ott, and online platform. ABS-CBN is the one that had a famous TV shows too and many kinds drama’s that maid by ABS-CBN telecom and news, sports and commercials was maiden by the company. ABS-CBN is the only could be the first media came what ever happen like an big calamity to our city there were there to say what happening in our environment and to help and assist other to help. The committee members regular and ex-office who were present, physically or through video call, cast the following votes: 70 to adopt the rejection, 11 to dismiss the rejection, 2 to inhibit, and 1 to abstain. But committee secretariat Portia Silang later clarified to Rappler that 3 lawmakers inhibited and no one abstained from the vote. Committee chairperson Franz Alvarez, who presided over the hearing, also did not cast his vote. Committee chairs usually do not vote unless they need to break a tie. And such that who work in the industry of ABS-CBN was kind that they became home and such a family to them too. Others cannot believed that the big Telecom will closed as they were the first tellecom that maiden than GMA.

Timow's QuOP No. 12: The ECQ Survey Results
The ECQ Survey Results are in... earlier than scheduled. But wait, there's more.
WE are supposed to close this by June 1 but because of yesterday’s event, we closed the survey. The opinion post regarding that matter will be discussed in a separate article.
Since March 26, Timow’s Turfconducted the survey (powered by SurveyMonkey) to cut the boredom from the enhanced community quarantine. The survey contained six questions — splitting into two…

ABS-CBN's shutdown (due to the Cease and Desist Order of the NTC following the expiration of its congressional franchise the previous day)
TV Patrol was the last program to air on the network, following a video presentation about ABS-CBN, a final "thank you" greeting, and the usual sign-off routine (playing of "Lupang Hinirang" and the sign-off notice, which was updated during this airing for the first time since 2016). The network officially went dark at 7:52:08 pm, directly going to a black screen (and then to static for analog viewers) instead of the color bars.

THIS JUST IN: Nickelodeon Animation Studio axes out for Glitch Techs after Season 3 [#RadyoBanderaEXCLUSIVE]
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA -- A televised streaming web series of Glitch Techs was reportedly axed out and later shelved for a final 3rd season in a first week of September 2022.
In a deleted tweet from an individual show creator named Dan Milano, both animation studios between Nickelodeon and Netflix loses its interest for a cartoon show, which is due to Standard and Practices issue per Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and for retrenchments of animation employees: "I'm afraid Nickelodeon has no interest in continuing the series".
Eric Robles publicly releases a never-before-seen single end page in magazine issue of "Glitch Techs Manual" where the Season 3 is currently in production and in pending for an episode release. Unreleased images and a storyboard video with a following in-development titles: "Return to Castlestein", "BITT 2", "Tower Defense" and "Mobs and Minions".
A source told exclusively to Radyo Bandera as based from a deleted Twitter post and a magazine issue, the final 3rd season becomes a digital lost media, which may lead into a serious issue per targeted demographic audience and partially inappropriate for kids on Netflix. The animation industry is in severe crisis in all of the indie cartoon show as of this writing.
Paramount Plus opens its pitching doors to renew the said production of Season 3 where the netizens are petitioning to save the show or losing to defeat its attention. ABS-CBN Corporation possibly co-produce a cartoon show as integrated with Netflix and Nickelodeon Asia under a content license agreement if A2Z and/or Kapamilya Channel will carry its rotation for a new episodes despite for a congressional franchise shutdown nationwide.
Streaming fans have suddenly worried for a cancellation at the end of Season 3 as the news broke on social media. Gamer duos of Hinobi Technology are in full support in Bailley City from its own indie cartoon show on Nickelodeon.
Both seasons 1 & 2 are now still available thru Netflix and for televised syndication as per one example of Kanade TV (which was now defunct in November 2021). Nickelodeon will not air on Cable Television in the United States of America (U.S.A.) with a respect of its streaming companies of Paramount Plus and Nickelodeon Animation Studio.
The final 3rd Season will soon slated in a few years from now, only on Netflix.

8 Days Left: How to deal with dumbasses
A few days ago, I had this heated back-and-forth with someone in the comments section. Someone I knew shared this post accusing ABS-CBN artists of hypocrisy for calling out Marcos for tax evasion when their station was put off the air because of it. One Google search would tell you that this simply isn’t true.
When someone else fact-checked the poster, her relative posted the link of the en banc decision for G.R. No. 252119 or the petition that ABS-CBN filed against NTO to bring back their franchise. He captioned it, “Here are the facts, not just your fake news” with a peace sign and red and green hearts beside it.
So, I read the court case. And because I did a lot of case studies back in Grade 11, I recognized immediately that there was no discussion of tax evasion, just failure to renew the franchise on time.
When I brought this up complete with news articles and video evidence of a BIR executive under oath, this man told me three things: 1) I shouldn’t trust valid, reputable, and long-established news outlets, 2) I shouldn’t argue the court decision, and 3) I should “study the law, pass the bar exam, and become a lawyer” before I can have a say on any of this.
This person I was talking to was a lawyer, but he was not able to comprehend that I was not arguing the decision of the court. I was arguing the false implication of the post.
Then, this full-grown adult, brought another full-grown adult with him and proceeded to call me dumb and devalue my integrity as an Atenean.
Rule number one of dealing with dumbasses: Don’t.
I didn’t respond after that. In fact, I muted the conversation. If there’s one thing my presidential bet has taught me it’s that when criticism turns to bashing, it’s better to leave it alone. What bothered me, however, was how easy it was for a grown-up to dismiss me when I’m presenting legitimate facts. I wasn’t being stupid. I had read the court’s decision and presented it clear to his face where he was wrong. Yet he insisted he was right because he had passed the bar and become a lawyer.
Of course, he passed the bar in the year when almost everyone did.
But that’s beside the point. Grown-ups tell us a lot about respect, but I find that as I grew older I only gave respect to the people who gave it back to me. This election season is like a circus of disrespect that, as far as I have witnessed, come mainly from adults towards their children. The countless stories I have heard of parents grilling their children about their bet, uncles sending vile Facebook posts to their nieces or nephews, and distant relatives poking fun at teenagers for thinking they know what’s right for the country.
And while these children give valid input, strong rebuttals, and real evidence, these people never have a good enough excuse as to why they are betting on their candidate. Once, a friend told me that their parents were voting for a presidentiable because that was what their grandparents would have wanted.
You shouldn’t be thinking of your grandparents. You should be thinking of your children.
Rule number two of dealing with dumbasses: Don’t be a dumbass.
When I tell people I’m fighting for my future, I mean it. I’m grasping at straws here, thinking of ways to be more active, to be more vocal, to be more participative. And the ones who’ll devalue all this are a bunch of adults who think they’re doing more than me when they’re not?
This isn’t a dig at ordinary civilians. The Philippines is still primarily built on survival, so not everyone can go around doing extensive research. I blame the old, decrepit, and sluggish people working in high positions in the government right now for ruining my future. These people have manipulated and toyed with the system so much that the people of this country don’t have even the basic privilege of receiving factual and accurate news. Political campaigns are supposed to be built on promises, not flat-out lies. The government is supposed to provide for the people, not steal from them.
Not just stealing from you. Stealing from your children. Then, stealing from your children’s children.
Final rule for dealing with dumbasses: Don’t vote for them.
I’m lucky to have had a lot of adults in my life show the same respect towards me that I show them. Not a lot of people get that. So if their parents, relatives, and teachers aren’t listening, they need to be represented by someone who will.
I’m voting for the Kabataan partylist this May 9. For obvious reasons. They have authored bills that promote students’ rights, penalize abusive educational practices, commemorate a day for the youth, define electronic violence against women and children, and establish youth and women museums. Not only that, they have also written bills that increased salaries for teachers, lowered the retirement age, sought agrarian reform, and strengthened the right to information.
We’re thinking about you, too. It’s time you start thinking about us.

*Almost 1 hour after, ganito na kapuno
But on a serious note, masasabi mo talagang mayroong pagkakaisa at pagtutulungan.
*as much as I want to post a video clip, I don't know what is happening but it's having an error posting it so I'll just serve you a sunset view from the rally :>
Sadly, Atty. Neri Colmenares was not part of it.
"Lolo" Chel Diokno.
Narito ang list ng piniling suportahang senatorial slate ng Leni-Kiko Tandem (in no particular order):
De Lima, Leila
Baguilat, Teddy
Diokno, Chel
Gordon, Dick
Lascon, Kuya Alex
Hontiveros, Risa
Trillianes, Antonio
Matula, Sonny
Binay, Jojo
Escudero, Chiz
Villanueva, Joel
Zubiri, Migz
The names that were mentioned above were the tandem chose to be their senatoriable slate. Note that we have the freedom to choose who are we going to vote. We should not vote straight but wisely.
*Atty. Chel Diokno expressed his gratitude to his 'CHELdren' [left], re-electionist Sen. Risa Hontiveros campaigned her platforms while the crowd clamored 'rISA pa!' [right]
*Cultural Dance performed as the grand entrance of Leni-Kiko tandem [left], VP Leni & Sen. Kiko on th stage after the performance [right]
Kiko upang suportahan sila.
*Photo grabbed from Rappler

According to the World Health Organisation, the first case of COVID-19 was confirmed in the Philippines on 20 January 2020. More than a year after, there are now more than 600,000 confirmed cases, nearly 13,000 deaths and a surge of 5000 new cases in one day. Approximately 41 percent of the total number of confirmed cases are from the National Capital Region (NCR), where Manila is located. The death toll from Duterte’s Drug War since July 2016 ranges from a conservative estimate of 8,663 people according to the UN Human Rights Council, to possibly thrice as high based on statements from the Philippine Commission on Human Rights. The official record from the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), the agency implementing Duterte’s Drug War, is at 6,011 deaths from July 2016 to December 2020.
Alarmingly, the national pandemic response is even being harnessed in the service of the Drug War with extrajudicial killings registering a 50 percent increase between April and July 2020. Both COVID-19 related deaths and extrajudicial killings linked with the War on Drugs have been popularly represented by the Duterte government as disconnected from, or outside of, all the range and repertoires of repression at the state’s disposal.
Yet prior to the pandemic, Filipinos were already primed for and inoculated to mass loss of life and human rights violations, precisely because of the militarism that has been the logic of security under Duterte’s rule. We can understand everyday life in the Philippines as part of an ongoing continuum of violence, from the first day that Duterte launched his war on drugs, to the present militarised response to the health crisis. The Philippines was already suffering a ‘murderous plague’ which made death paradoxically both an abstract and visceral reality for many Filipinos, even before the disease outbreak.
It matters, therefore, that we constantly articulate how tragedy and mass loss of life are routine and logical outcomes under Duterte and why this government must be made accountable for the murderous plague it has authored. Filipinos must maintain their demands for better leadership, crisis response and management despite the persistent gaslighting by the President, his spokespersons, and enabling members of his regime. The forthcoming May 2022 national elections have prompted discussions on the importance of leadership among specific sectors mobilised by the question, ‘pangulo’ or ‘pang-gulo’ (‘president’ or ‘nuisance’)? At the highest level of power, does the Philippines have someone who leads, or someone who self-servingly obstructs recovery and fuels division?
Drug war and the limits of militarised security
Duterte’s default approach has been to wield the military and police at every crisis. However, this approach generates its own crises because the truncated lens of militarism comes up inadequate in addressing the multidimensional root causes and consequences to much of the global security challenges we are facing today. Based on the best available science, and what COVID-19 is demonstrating globally, state leaders must be able to address a drastically changed security landscape where the heightened intensity and frequency of extreme events will threaten all areas of human life and ecosystems. What has been undeniable is that leaders disastrously fall short of managing crises—whether in the context of armed conflicts, disasters and climate change, or health pandemics—when they do not incorporate a range of perspectives and expertise.
Duterte’s military and police-driven approach to every national decision-making process is exclusionary. He has sought to frame Filipinos, especially frontline health workers who express their discontent, as ‘enemies’ who do nothing but complain. Because he reproduces and invests in militarising crises, he cannot but interpret differing views as an existential threat to his power. The Philippines therefore has a leader that forecloses spaces for civic deliberation and participation at a time when these are most needed.
The drug war has gradually created the institutional and rhetorical foundations that enable other forms of violence: the use of Anti-Terrorism Act of 2020 and ‘red-tagging’ to silence opposition; the compounded suffering of internally displaced communities as resources are diverted away from the forgotten crises in Marawi and Tacloban; and ongoing violence and development aggression against Indigenous peoples and environmental activists. Duterte’s war on drugs has been argued to satisfice the stages of genocide.
Death and disinformation due to ‘infodemic’
The pandemic is also mediated by a pervasive climate of disinformation in the Philippines. The deadly combination of militarism and disinformation has been effective in fragmenting and eliminating political opposition, and in state repression more generally. Over the past years, Philippine democracy has been constantly threatened and undermined by the rapid and increased production and dissemination of misinformation and disinformation. A study has shown how insidious, partisan and curated content is produced and circulated by “architects of networked disinformation”, including influencers, online celebrities, politicians in-house team’s, and marketing companies. These players have weaponized the internet to support and bolster the operations of Duterte’s administration in designing and implementing a political and militarist agenda.
An evident outcome of weaponizing social media platforms is the silencing of dissent. Paid trolls, bot armies and a range of fake news websites run by supporters of Duterte have targeted and harassed individuals and institutions. For instance, in 2018, Maria Ressa, the chief executive of Rappler, was the target of state-sponsored “patriotic trolling”, misogynistic comments and hate speech. Meanwhile, the Philippine government attempted to revoke Rappler’s license in 2018. Notably in 2020, Philippine lawmakers rejected the franchise renewal for ABS-CBN, a Philippine’s broadcasting company also critical of Duterte’s governance.
Misinformation and disinformation also impact the lives of ordinary Filipinos in national and transnational contexts. A report shows that Filipinos spend an average of 4 hours and 15 minutes each day on different social media channels. These online platforms have also been used to sustain ties among overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and their families. For the ten million Filipinos spread across the world, social media and mobile applications have become valuable tools to remain connected to home. However, these channels serve as key sites for producing and disseminating fake information. For example, a study on the 2019 Philippine election shows how OFWs are targeted by online communities that disseminate falsehoods and manipulative content.
More recently, an ‘infodemic’ has emerged in tandem with the COVID-19 pandemic. The spread of hoaxes and conspiracy theories about COVID-19 and attacks on the credibility of the World Health Organization (WHO) re-victimises all those who have died in the pandemic and the families they have left behind. In a digital environment muddled by falsehoods and inaccuracies, people are afforded narratives that only validate their own pre-existing beliefs and affirm experiences that reflect their immediate or narrow environment. This makes it all the more possible for those in positions of power and privilege to detach (and stay out of touch) from the harsh realities millions of Filipinos are facing.
The use of digital technologies at a time of crisis can stir heightened ambivalence among Filipinos. On the one hand, greater online connectivity affords the maintenance of intimate ties transnationally. However, it is the same connectivity that can potentially be used to distort understanding of social welfare, human rights, and personal and familial futures through the lens of fear. Akin to the pandemic, widespread disinformation is slowly but effectively killing mutual trust and civic participation in Philippine society. It does this by eroding Filipinos’ access to reliable information and their right to thrive in democratic spaces. Crucially, disinformation hinders Filipinos from seeing the structural inequalities, marginalisation and exploitation that implicates us all. There is neither one person nor a “silver bullet” that can magically vanquish—in six months—what has been built over decades by political and economic systems in the Philippines. It will take care, collective action and mutual responsibility.
Stop the killings; stop the strongman
Crises can provide windows of opportunity to overhaul ossified harms done by this government, and repair what good is left. Deaths and killings may be mundane now but they do not have to be acceptable: not now and not in the future. There is a need to develop antidotes that can reclaim, secure and protect democracy. As the COVID-19 pandemic intersects with Duterte’s murderous plague, Filipinos are faced with clear lessons that can be brought to bear in the next election.
First, there is no path to “rapid” recovery and it takes inclusive governance and leadership to realise long-lasting and “crisis-proof” reconstruction. Moving forward, Filipinos might be more sceptical and suspicious of leaders promising to do everything without demanding shared responsibilities and recognising diverse expertise from the Filipino public. Globally, we are also seeing youth-led protests both from afar such as in the US, and closer in neighbouring Thailand and Myanmar, against police and military violence as well as outdated styles and systems of militarised authority. While their rule may seem inescapable at present, young people are taking the lead in sending a clear message: the myth of the ‘strongman’ is no more.
Second, the killings were indirectly enabled by the political fragmentation and societal division accelerated by digital technologies. What proved most effective in stifling collective action was the framing of political engagements in terms of “camp” politics and loyalties—us versus them / DDS versus Dilawan—instead of under a unifying identity of “the Filipino people.” Duterte’s success in fulfilling an initial populist desire for a ‘strongman leader’ is an outcome of previous failures in crisis response under the Aquino government. Rather than see Duterte and Aquino as oppositional, we need to see the violent continuity between the two different models of leadership.
Third, the rise and resilience of Duterte’s strongman rule is connected with his leveraging of underlying sexism, misogyny, class and regional prejudices in Philippine society. Clearly, Duterte’s misogyny is no laughing matter. Rape jokes are neither humorous nor harmless. His speeches form part of, and feed, societal violence. Finally, the path to stopping the killings will be long and difficult, but necessary. The governance challenges ahead will be more complex and difficult. An indispensable step in this direction is recognising and healing from collective grief on a transnational scale. Then the task of refocusing energies toward building new leaders and political agendas can begin.

alright.
the philippine government has shut down a large broadcaster channel called ABS CBN. it was apparently because they werent paying taxes and their franchise has expired.
according to BIR (bureau of internal revenue, ABS CBN has no pending tax issues and has been paying taxes for years. they also requested for a franchise renewal before but the congress did not comply.
today our government has attacked press freedom and forced 11,000 writers, journalists and media workers OUT OF THEIR JOBS IN THIS PANDEMIC. LITERALLY 11,000 FILIPINOS WERE FORCED OUT OF THEIR JOBS BECAUSE THE GOVERNMENT WANTED THE NETWORK TO SHUT DOWN.
keep in mind that they do not care about POGO (philippine offshore gaming operator) which houses mostly CHINESE WORKERS and are committing TAX EVASION EVERY SINGLE DAY yet they are allowed to operate by the government.
the government protects chinese owned companies that commit tax evasion but attacks filipino media and news branches that provided help and jobs to THOUSANDS OF FILIPINOS.
keep in mind that the last time that ABS CBN was forced to shut down, it was during a dictator’s rule in MARTIAL LAW.
the philippines is literally under regime and is starting to consider martial law. the philippine government doesnt care about their people. they crush and destroy free and independent media.
they destroy democracy.
#the philippines#duterte#abs cbn#politics#if yall can#please spread this post#we are so close to martial law at this point#it doesnt have to get a shit ton of notes like the last one#but people have to know

Our President And The Issue Of EJKs In The Philippines by Santino Fernandez
"Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely-Lord Acton”
These words to me are important as they reflect a huge societal issue happening right now in The Philippines. This issue has to deal with the police and how they abuse their power towards the people of my country. It is no secret that Police Brutality is running rampant in some countries right now. Just last May, America experienced a great tragedy with the murder of George Floyd. The cop killings in the US are rampant but in the Philippines they are as bad if not worse.
Ever since 2016 our president Rodrigo Duterte has been on the so called “War on Drugs.” In this campaign he promised to rid the country of dangerous substances by the end of his six year term. However all it has done is create more damage as this so called “Drug War” targets the poor and less fortunate. In the years since Duterte has taken office he has implemented Extra Judicial Killings also known as EJKs in the country. An EJK is when the government sanctions the killing of people or drug addicts in the country as long as there is evidence. There is no due process any more and these addicts are not taken to a court of law. These addicts are shot in the streets in cold blood without any hesitation or remorse.
Since the implementation of EJK in our country there have been up to 5000 deaths caused by the EJKs. However human rights groups say it is way beyond 12,000 already. Human rights groups have been siding with the people because it is a violation of democracy. According to our democratic law everyone deserves their day in court but Duterte prefers to not do that and instead kill the offenders. In a direct quote from the man himself he says that he will protect the cops who commit the EJKs. Duterte says- “That’s our deal. When I said that you go and destroy the drug industry, destroying means destroying, including human life.” He said police officers who have faced difficulties in carrying out their duties should never stress over it as he says "I'll take care of you.”
This has caused many corrupt cops to abuse the power and protection given by the president. Because of this protection the deaths caused by the EJKs have risen rapidly claiming the lives of men, women, and children alike. One of the many victims was Kian De Los Santos a 17 year old boy in high school who was gunned down by cops. The official statement by the police was that allegedly Kian drew a firearm on the cops and it prompted them to fire back. Witness reports and a closed-circuit TV, though, showed two men pulling Kian around a basketball court in civilian wear. At the site of the confrontation, two small sachets of alleged shabu, a .45 calibre firearm and four shot cartridge cases were found. Witnesses have reported that they ordered Kian to run and handed him a gun. The Caloocan policemen believed Kian was a drug runner, but the accusation was vehemently refuted by the teenager's parents.
However it is not just physical damage and the loss of life that these EJKs cause but mental damage as well. Human Rights watcher Carlos H. Conde has investigated the trauma caused by the EJKs. One of Carlos’s subjects was a girl whose father was gunned down by the police which has created massive trauma. In a direct quote from Carlos-“What struck me deeply was the level of trauma that these kids have, When I talked to her about that, she was very articulate and forthright, but you could sense the deep psychological trauma that she suffered in witnessing the violence and also being reminded every day of what happened to her father”
These children paint a harrowing picture of the long-lasting consequences of the murders. Another harrowing example of how EJK effects children are three anonymous brothers. These three brothers, who were 15, 13 and 10 when their father was killed over two years ago, now live on the streets, after being essentially deserted by their mother, do not attend school and work menial jobs for rent. A 5-year-old boy's mother said he threatened to kill one of his friends and cover him in packing tape. "It's the same way the boy's father was discovered 19 times after being stabbed, his head wrapped in tape and a sign placed near him reading, "I'm a drug pusher. Don’t emulate me.”
From July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2019, the Philippine National Police announced that 5,526 criminals were killed during police operations. However, according to reports by domestic human rights organizations, this figure does not include the thousands of suspected gunmen killed in incidents that are not seriously investigated by the authorities, raising the death toll to as high as 27,000. Human Rights Watch reports and reputable media sources such as Rappler and Reuters say that these vigilante-style shootings were committed either by police officers themselves or by police-related killers. This has resulted in many cases with regards to the violation of human rights but only one case was brought to justice and it was the case of Kian.
Even today there are victims of this abuse in power. On Dec 20 2020 a mother and her son were killed by a policeman in Pampanga. This policeman by the name of Jonel Nuezca shot a middle aged woman by the name of Sonya Gregorio and her son by the name of Frank Gregorio. This whole incident was recorded on video and shows Nuezca take out a gun and shoot Sonya in the head, then shoots her son while they clutch each other, then shoots each of them a second time. The video soon went viral, prompting an internal investigation of the police officer and murder charges. He has handed himself in to the police but this is again a harsh reminder of how rampant this abuse of power is.
The presidents reach of power also extends over to the media and government. The United Nations Human Rights Council adopted a resolution in July 2019 urging the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights to send a briefing on the human rights situation in the Philippines in June 2020, putting international pressure for transparency to bear. The Duterte administration reacted by demanding the termination of all financial aid talks from the 18 countries adopting the resolution.
Journalists are also being silenced as well. This is the case with the company of ABS-CBN news network and the famous journalist Maria Ressa. In the case of ABS-CBN the company was accused of political bias. Duterte accused ABS-CBN of not being impartial or fair during the 2016 elections. These accusations go even further when the President accused ABS-CBN of aiding Duterte’s political competition. During the hearing for the franchise’s renewal the house of representatives voted on closing ABS-CBN after 25 years of news. Critics of the president say he's gone after media outlets who have closely reported his drug war, which since he took office in 2016 has left thousands of people dead. By government order, ABS-CBN ceased operations of its free TV and radio channels after its 25-year franchise expired in May.
This has caused massive repercussions amongst the Philippine society as 11,000 workers were left without a job and let go.
However there are massive long term effects as well. ABS-CBN was the number one news network in the country and their network reached across the various provinces. With no news network most of the country is not informed on the various events in the country. This was the case in November 2020 when Typhoon Ulysses hit the Cagayan Valley. Since there was no news of the upcoming Typhoon the residents of that province were unprepared and not ready. The result was a staggering amount of deaths in the Cagayan valley as well as a massive amount of damage. All this is the result of Duterte wanting to silence his critics because of his actions in the drug war.
Another example of Journalism being silenced is the case of Maria Ressa. Maria Ressa was the CEO of the news website Rappler. This news website vehemently criticized and watched Duterte’s movements and approached towards the drug war. Ever since the 2016 election Rappler has been a harsh critic for Duterte but in 2020 Maria Ressa was jailed. The allegations according to the court were “cyberlibel” which is equivalent to 200,000 pesos in damages plus a few years in jail. Ressa’s arrest sparked anger in millions including famous journalist Amal Clooney. Many have stated that this is an act that takes away the freedom of speech. A right that we Filipinos have because of our democratic government. Amal has said her self that “the court had become complicit in a sinister action to silence a journalist for exposing corruption and abuse”.
Rappler scrutinized Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte's government, revealed bot armies and corruption, and reported his ruthless anti-drug campaign, which, by some reports, has resulted in tens of thousands of extrajudicial killings. In exchange, Rappler was criticized as trading "fake news" by the president, and his administration launched multiple lawsuits against him. In addition to the cyber-libel allegations, Ressa is also facing further prosecution for libel, two court proceedings alleging unlawful foreign ownership of her enterprises, and inquiries into her old tax returns. The numerous allegations made against Ressa could lead to prison sentences of about 100 years.
Various journalists have also been victims to Duterte’s silencing. In November, one journalist had been killed: news anchor Eduardo Dizon of Mindanao's Kidapawan City, who was shot dead on July 10. At least one of them, Brandon Lee, was seriously wounded in an assault by a gunman in the northern Philippines in August. But it doesn't stop there as Duterte has passed an Anti Terror Bill which at close examination controls our freedom of speech. Under the statute, a criminal suspect can be arrested without trial for 14 days, a duration which may be extended to 24 days. Human rights lawyers argue that it breaks a constitutional requirement that after three days of arrest, an individual must be convicted. The anti terror law also will monitor any social media discourse related to offending the president or his administration.
Even today the ruthless reign of Duterte continues as the police are given more power while the masses suffer. During the lockdown the president has stated that he will kill anyone who violates it. “My orders to the police and the military, if anyone creates trouble, and their lives are in danger: shoot them dead.” This has created fear amongst the masses as well as a new view on how the people see our government.
In my personal opinion this is not what a leader is supposed to be. Before I started on this essay I put a quote about power and I feel this is more relevant now than ever. Duterte’s absolute power has corrupted the government absolutely. It has made the police think they are untouchable and has caused the poor people to suffer. Our president is waging a war on drugs that is not effective at all and the Filipino people are paying the price. A good leader in my opinion is one who puts the people first and not his agendas. A good leader is someone who takes the Filipino people’s lives into consideration and does not murder them in cold blood. So with this current societal issue happening in our country I ask that you spread the awareness of how bad our president is. Hopefully this country will change for the better and it will see a brighter tomorrow. In the end it is really up to the Filipino people and if they want their country to change.
“People should not be afraid of their governments, governments should be afraid of their people.”

Two days after World Freedom Press Day, the Philippines’ National Telecommunication’s Commission has issued a cease and desist order to one of the country’s largest nationwide TV network, ABS-CBN, despite Congress agreeing to grant provisional authority to operate as they deliberate on the franchise renewal. THIS IS A CLEAR ATTACK ON PRESS FREEDOM, stemming from Duterte’s personal vendetta against the network, whose franchise renewal he pledged to block. And all this in the middle of a fucking pandemic.
The video above shows the final bow of Noli de Castro, long-time journalist and news anchor of TV Patrol, a newscast program that’s been on the air everyday since 1987. This was written by the legendary EP, Ms. Ging Reyes.
Transcript below:
In the service of the Filipino. Saan man sila naroroon, sa buong mundo,”
English translation:
“It is our honor to serve you, compatriots. Our franchise may not have been renewed and our broadcast may have been shutdown, we promise to you that we will not be silenced by this attack on our democracy and press freedom. As we face the biggest challenge of our company and our careers, we will never turn our backs on you, compatriots. We are family. We are ABS-CBN. In the service of the Filipino. No matter where they may be, in the entire world.”
“It sends a clear message: What Duterte wants, Duterte gets. And it is clear, with this brazen move to shut down ABS-CBN, that he intends to silence the critical media and intimidate everyone else into submission,” the National Union of Journalists in the Philippines said in their statement.
WE CANNOT TAKE THIS LYING DOWN, MGA KABAYAN. Remember that this is not the first time a murderous dictator has shut down the network. Make noise. Push Congress to assert its mandate and authority over this. Hold NTC AND the Solicitor General Calida accountable for taking away a vital source of information from the Filipino people during a global crisis.

On the rejection of #ABSCBNFranchiseRenewal
This is expected. President Rodrigo Duterte already said this last year: “Your franchise will end next year. If you are expecting that it will be renewed, I’m sorry. You’re out. I will see to it that you’re out.”
People shouldn’t be surprised at all.
Haay.
My prayers are always with you, ABS-CBN.

Auntie Lulu invited me to spend the weekend in Batangas. If you are wondering how I got here, I used my ID with our Nasugbu address.
It’s a tough day, peeps. Do I have to mention Covid? and on top of this, congress declined ABS-CBN’s franchise renewal...
Peeps in government, fucked up priorities, right?
ang galing nyo. you did not even realize the domino effect this has.
Randoms:
1. I bought a new airconditioning unit since the compressor of my old AC is busted and replacing it, is the same as buying a new one. Ayan, unscheduled expenses.
2. I re-booked most of our flights. For the remainder of 2020 wala ng travel. Everything is moved to 2021. Sana matuloy especially yung Osaka.
3. business is steady so far. Kaya pa naman. But I am scared given the political climate. Aminin naten, this government is shoving so much fear that the business community is having second thoughts investing, given there is minimal support coming from the govt...real talk....
sorry wala ako makwentuhan.
