Thank you for that super interesting meta about the airfields and the hangar! Now my question is...if they were able to use Helinet for 1.5 episodes' worth of scenes, if they wanted a different location for Air Harbor, they'd have to want it for a lot MORE than 1.5 episodes (unless Helinet wasn't available at ALL so they had to start over). But then you run into the "wait no helicopters" issue you mention. But I'd think that they could rent a few helicopters for one day to get the exteriors? I'm talking myself in circles.
Oh, you and I both. I've been thinking myself in circles since looking at the hangar scouting photo and the A320 mock-up. To be frank, currently I'm not really buying the new Air Ops theory yet.
So, only the 7x03 Tommy stealing helicopter and the 7x04 Eddie stealing Tommy Air Ops tour scenes were filmed at Helinet. The entire rescue mission inside of the helicopter was filmed in a replica back at the studio. It doesn't fly but it can be easily disassembled. You can take the doors away for camera access or you can take the tail and rotors away, stick the fuselage part on a kind of shaking device for special effects.
Tumblr media
This is how they filmed the helicopter ride.
Tumblr media
This is the actual helicopter that flies. Look at the window next to Oliver's head, it's bigger and more rounded on the edges.
Now, the 2 scenes they filmed at Helinet are pretty short and not that complicated, just some characters talking with some extras walking around in the background. They just had to shuffle some helicopters around, maybe move a few desks down from the office. If they shot the 7x04 tour scene late afternoon, I can totally see them waiting for the sun to go down, then knock out the 7x03 scene, all in a couple of hours.
As for the helicopters, I don't think any one of them that we saw on screen even left the airport.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here in 7x03, look closely at the window again, we only see the helicopter flying in the sky without other visual reference in the shot. Next thing we see, it's landed and it's the replica on the helipad.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Or here in 7x04, we see Tommy's helicopter flying off, then cut to Buck's jealous face, and that's it, end of scene.
It would be way more expensive renting actual aircrafts, fly them to another airport then just put them there for looks. While Helinet does own 2 aircrafts specifically contracted by ABC for electronic news gathering, like N29HD here:
Tumblr media
The other one, N71HD, has a major problem:
Tumblr media
I still maintain that there's no need for Air Ops to be shown on the show. I mean, we never see Karen's lab other than that time it exploded. If somehow 118 requires air support on a call, then you only need the helicopter, not the base. Or if someone goes to Air Ops to talk to Tommy, just shove him in a regular office and call it a control room or something. Although if for some reason we're going back to Air Ops this season, I can see why a new hangar would be needed.
Helinet and the city of Los Angeles have been involved in a tug of war over the proposed expansion and modernization of the Helinet base since February. Helinet says its current facilities are too old and too small, it would need bigger hangars (so that the maintenance crew doesn't have to work outside) and better office space (for regular workplace wellness). Residents in surrounding neighborhoods, on the other hand, are strongly against this proposal, as they believe this is just a trojan horse for Helinet to house bigger jet aircrafts in the future, bringing in more noise and air pollution. (You can read about this here, under Development Chilling Effect) The city council rejected the expansion proposal in February, and Helinet is actually suing the city of LA to force the project through.
I'm not taking side here, I don't basically nothing about this case, but if you're interested, you can read letters from Helinet employees addressed to the city council here. There are photos of the hangars and office space on the last page, and... honestly it's not looking good. Frequent sewer drain backups, poor ventilation, and when it rains, it leaks everywhere.
Tumblr media
Oh, and when I watched 7x03 and I saw this little kitchenette set up in the background, I thought: cool, they make it feel like a real fire station. Turns out, it's the Helinet office's actual kitchen. Yes, that's all there is, this make shift set up, for the entire company.
Again, I have absolutely zero idea what that hangar at ONT is for or anything about S8 for that matter. But I totally understand why they wouldn't want to go back to the Helinet office.

The bookstore q got me thinking. If you wrote a book, someone working in a bowling alley or something, and your agent asked you to do more with that (maybe it's a creepy place to have the MC chased) is this kind of common feedback? And is it good - does it mean they like your book, just think you could do more with a setting? Do you see editors give your clients this kind of feedback or do you yourself? Makes you wonder sometimes when agents see more potential in a setting than the writer did!
I don't know if it is common feedback or not, actually, I'm not sure I've ever really thought about it. Like, I can't REMEMBER having given that exact feedback per se, but it sounds like something normal to say, so maybe I have?
I don't think it is a "good" thing OR a "bad" thing. (Just like if we say "I'd like to see more ABC", or "maybe pull back a bit on XYZ" -- that piece of feedback alone doesn't mean we like your book OR don't like your book generally speaking -- it just means we think that there could be more ABC or less XYZ, that would potentially make it even better.)
I *do* think that a great setting is important. IT can be just so revealing of where we are in time and space, what kind of values and interests people have, and it's just FUN to see what makes this place specific and special. Like, don't just set your book at A SCHOOL. Set it at a SPECIFIC SCHOOL with its own feel and vibe and look. Every school, and every classroom, is different - so what is THIS one like?
If you set your book at a bowling alley, don't just say "yeah it's a bowling alley. I work there." and call it a day -- what does THIS bowling alley look like, smell like - what kind of food do they serve, do they do like "disco-bowling" with glow-in-the-dark balls blacklights and a DJ and cocktails and tattooed purple-haired hipsters renting shoes, or is it an old-school orange-and-brown with a lot of weird old men huddled around and the only food is suspect "nachos" and hot-dogs from a dirty glass display where they have potentially been sweating since 1972? If the person works there - what is that LIKE? What do they have to wear? What does it smell like, and does the smell linger on their clothes after they go home? What do they have to do for their job, what do they like about it, what do they hate? Do they secretly love being on "shoe duty" because it means they don't have to talk to the guy behind the hot-dog machine? Do they have ridiculous banter with a certain delivery driver that they always look forward to? Or what?
Further: What do they know about the building that an average passer-by WOULDN'T know? Like where do the balls and pins GO? Is there a secret room in the back where you can access the machines? Is there a basement or some way to get UNDER the machines? IF somebody was hiding in the bowling alley - where could they hide? If there was a clue or a gun or something hidden somewhere - where could it be, where the person who NEEDS to find it could find it but nobody else could? If you wanted to make out with a delivery driver there - where would you do it where you wouldn't get caught by the manager or customers but you could still see the lanes if somebody needed you -- does the manager's office have monitors, and can you access it? If somebody wanted to do a crime there - what kinds of crimes would be possible, and how would they get away with them?
Seems like a cool location to me. :-)
Basically - - I think ANY location can seem cool, if you make it specific rather than generic. I'd urge any writer to think about ways in which THIS SPECIFIC SETTING can forward your story and/or let us know more about the characters, the neighborhood, etc.
And, importantly: I'M NOT SAYING YOU HAVE TO TALK ABOUT ALL OF THIS AT LENGTH OR SLOW THE STORY DOWN GETTING MIRED IN DETAILS. Specific, memorable sensory details and the like can be woven in without slowing the story down! I have a client who told me once that he knows the exact blueprint layout of all the locations in his books - how many steps to the sink, etc -- but *almost none of that info is in the book* -- HE JUST KNOWS IT, so when he says something, it's SPECIFIC.)

Logan has a schedule he dedicates his life to.
First, to wake up at five am.
Next, is to get in the shower without a bucket. Why without a bucket? Because he's damn rich.
Y'see, when you're one of the most successful people in the country of Loríses, running a multi-billion dollar corporation on affordable apartment living and clean energy resources and steady bank loan agreements, well... you can afford some time.
That, and clean water.
Once that's all done and good, Logan likes to relax and have a nice breakfast in his humble top-apartment as he watches the news from the table.
The time didn't really matter when he woke up or finished eating because he never booked (or more accurately put, was forced to book) a meeting or council accommodation or ribbon cutting or something before eleven am.
Breakfast was his only sanctity; he made sure to have plenty of it.
With the news and breakfast over, Logan would head out to work with his classic polo and tie with a briefcase in hand, then spend about eight hours basically running around heading between business meetings and stock readings and introductory openings and apartment gatherings and- well, you get the picture.
Without a hitch, Logan'd get home at around seven-thirty pm, have some sort of dinner out with colleagues he really didn't care for, and get home to either sleep or do his favorite kind of work; charity work.
In the charity work's case?; he wouldn't get a wink of rest.
Today, Logan woke up like he would any other day, perhaps a little later than he thought he would, but that was due to his one am adoption centre charity bidding auction last night.
When he went to check his phone for any messages from his secretary for the day, he found only two from the uptight woman:
You have the day off, Mr.Corbett.
Have a nice day.
Logan looked on in confusion.
I have the day off? Why? he texted back.
His secretary immediately responded with a simple,You haven't used your vacation days at all for the past year, Mr.Corbett. If you don't use them by the end of September, you lose them. I took liberty of letting you off for the next week.
Logan was about to fight back and tell her he's coming into work anyway, but he found she's a bit faster with her hands.
You need it, Logan.
Go visit that old lady down the street, in the bookshop. Her name is Mrs.Tamry. She's my mother's sister and owns the place. She could use some company today.
Logan groaned. He wasn't moving the stubborn woman and that meant he actually had to take care of himself. Woe is he.
Logan grumpily put the phone to his bedside table before face-planting onto his bed. He groaned some more, kicking his feet and punching his hands into the pillows. Perhaps childish, yes, but Logan was never really raised to do much else than work. He didn't know what else to do.
Logan remembered the Mrs.Tamry from his secretary's messages a few minutes after his tantrum and sighed as he flipped over on the bed, rolling out of it.
After a shower he went over to his closet and picked out something a little more casual- a flannel and finer jeans -before stuffing down some toast to head to this bookowner.
Logan would admit that the bookstore part of the old woman was interesting; he's loved being read to and reading stories ever since he could recount the ABC's. It was one of the few pastimes he could be shown doing in public: his public advisor had once told him it made him look both gentle and intelligent, and the ladies would love it. Logan had just told him that he didn't care about the ladies and continued on his way to his office.
Logan finally made his way to the shop. He rolled his eyes at the name: "Book-Ends and Seller's Beggining." It was charming, if not a little corny, and Logan wasn't sure if this was really worth his time, but then he saw the little old lady through the glass sitting by her lonesome and let out a breath of air.
Dammit. Why do I have to feel so guilty?
Logan pushed his way through the tall glass doors and looked his way around, noticing the high bookshelves and neat working stations. It seemed grandma kept up with the times as Logan noticed a small table with a few charging stations attached to it, and a couple of teens doing their homework while plugging their phones in nearby. A stack of laps for rent stood on a shelf near the station.
Logan heard the old woman laugh hoarsely behind him.
"Well, now I wasn't expecting such a dashing young man in my shop so early in the morning!" Mrs.Tamry teased, still laughing. She got up from her weaved rocking chair and instead shuffled her way over to a flustered Logan. "Got some good bone structure- although the hair could use some work. A working man, hmm?"
Logan stammered at the guiding, touching hands and expert eye. "Yes ma'am, I- I am a businessman," he squeaked out.
Logan was used to just saying nothing while out in public, or worse, hosting everything and never getting a break. Having this conversation, if not an awkward one, made him sweat bullets. It was unknown territory.
"A businessman, huh?" Mrs.Tamry sang. She looked him over a few more times, noting the sweaty palms and pale face, before hollaring over to the kids in the corner, "Does this man look familiar?"
The three in the corner; a smaller, but colorful child, a tall but scraggly young fellow, and a boy with a star for his shirt all turned their heads.
The colorful kid snickered. "Nah, he looks too nervous to be any big shot I've heard of," they chided.
"Yeah, and what would he be doing here of all places if he was?" the scraggly lad questioned.
"Hey, knock it off!" the boy in the star shirt huffed. "The guy's probably super sweet and here to pick something up for his wife where they'll read fairytales to their kids and it'll be really damn cute!"
The colorful child started laughing hard; so hard, in fact, that they started tearing up. The scraggly kid did the same. The star boy just crossed his arms, looking to Logan with a much more innocent view.
Logan was sweating so profusely he was afraid he was going to faint. Mrs.Tamry just watched with a crooked smile at their imaginations.
"I am right, huh? You're just a nice guy!" the star boy asked, leaning in. The other two troublemakers got themselves together enough to lean in too, giggling.
"Yeah, tell us! Who are you?"
Logan couldn't stop himself before he even knew what his brain and mouth were going to say.
"I-I'm gay."
Well that was certainly new.
Logan realized what he said and covered his mouth with his hand, shock covering his entire face. Oh now you've done it, he roared at himself, you've told three kids and an old lady you're a disgusting pansy!
But the yelling and the chastising and the kicking-him-out-of-the-store never came. The other children looked to him in absolute glee, and the old woman just snickered.
"So what, dude? I'm like... mega gay too," the boy in the star shirt joked. He easily smiled at Logan.
Logan couldn't tell if he was being encouraged, or if he was doing the encouraging to the boy.
The other two children looked between eachother before looking to Logan. "We're non-binary. We use they/them pronouns. Could you please use them?"
Logan just barely managed a nod, his nerves in overdrive. He just outed himself and now these brave kids were coming out to him too? It was a hell of a thing to wrap around his brain. "O-Of course I will," he managed through chattering teeth.
Logan turned to the old woman last. He expected her to throw him out at first, but now he realized that she knew all this time. Now he looked to Mrs.Tamry in fear. The fact she could figure something like that out so quick was something Logan wasn't prepared to deal with, shock after shock being ran into him in the past ten minutes.
"Young man, you realize that this establishment has a 'We Accept You' sticker on the front, right?" she giggled, patting his shoulder despite him being a tree and her a stump.
Logan looked back to the glass and saw a mirrored version of that sticker on the door; clear as day.
Logan slumped his shoulders. "Oh."
Mrs.Tamry took his shoulders and guided Logan over to a seat, sitting in the one next to him with a sigh. "Ooh, that feels much better on my back."
Logan just stared at her, sweating and shaking and why had I not fought my secretary on letting me work-
Mrs.Tamry clasped a hand on top of his fussing one and smiled gently. The wild side of her had been turned down, and now something much more sweet laid itself out to the scatterbrained gay.
Logan felt himself calm down just a little.
"Now now, I've been told by my niece that her boss was coming in today to spend his day off. I'm to assume that's you, right?" she gently asked. The hand on Logan's softly rubbed it's thumb against Logan's knuckles.
Logan calmed down just a little more.
His tongue managed to unstick itself from the roof of his mouth enough to let out a small, "yes."
He didn't know why he was so freaked. Usually when he got this nervous he'd just bury it down like he had been for the past thirty something years but in this place, it felt like no matter how hard he tried, he was forced to feel everything he was feeling. Logan did not like it.
Mrs.Tamry sighed and used her other hand to tap a gentle rhythm in Logan's arm, giving him something to hold on to.
"Y'know, I didn't expect such a good man like you to be holding back so much fear. I could feel it as you stepped through that door," Mrs.Tamry commented, trying to make small talk.
Logan avoided her eyes. "Well, I haven't got much of a place to let it out."
Mrs.Tamry kept the rhythm on his arm while she hummed.
"Well that simply isn't good!" she preached. "Tell you what, if you're feeling so scared and trembling like you are now, you can always come to me, y'hear?"
Logan nodded a little. He could feel himself slowly relax, coming down from being so flustered and flabbergasted.
New places, new conversations- in which he made actual conversations instead of one-sided invites -new people, new ideas, new everything! It made his brain go into overdrive and his nerves alight. Usually he was able to handle it, bury it deep for later, but here? It seemed he couldn't stuff the feelings down.
Maybe it was Mrs.Tamry's wild but motherly approach, or the bookstore's inviting nature, or the teens he talked to earlier, but either way, Logan just sighed.
He was okay. He was safe. He was okay.
Mrs.Tamry pulled Logan up and rubbed his back while she headed him in the direction of the laptops.
"Why don't you do yourself a favor and find a game to play or- or a messaging site to talk to someone!" Mrs.Tamry then giggled cheekily. "It seems you don't have many friends, so now's a time to start!"
Logan took a seat next to the three teens with an awkward smile and a wave as he opened up the laptop. It was a little out of style, but it seemed fine enough as Logan booted it up.
"We never got your name, sir," the star boy asked politely while Logan logged in.
"Yeah! Like for example I'm Joan and that's Talyn, and he's Thomas, so now you know us!" the newly named Joan called out, tipping their beanie like a celebrity.
Talyn nodded along, playing with their colorful hair. "Homework is getting boring, we wanna know you!"
Logan turned to the three kids with a reserved smile as he signed up for a messenger site called GetAlong.
"My name is Logan Corbett."

Come across Your Dream Investment With BMV Property Leads
Tumblr media
Shelling out can be very tricky but it can be an important thing to do as it will let you know that your money is making more money for you, this is primarily so when you invest in property. If you can afford to purchase a home outright then you can easily start making money from it as you may have no mortgage to meet. People may be beginning to think that building investment isn't the place to invest your money because the market is amazingly slow but if you're not looking to buy a property to fix the software up and sell it then you don't need to worry about the property current market. More and more people are beginning to rent a home because getting a property loan is very difficult especially for first time buyers because they are expected to come across an even bigger deposit than they would have needed decades ago and not just because house prices have risen. Therefore by buying a property outright and then renting it posts making money from your investment right away while you still have the collateral from your property no matter when you choose to sell it. Any time you purchase a below market value (BMV) property lead you could potentially easily make a profit when you do decide to sell your property. There are a lot websites where you can find property leads meaning that you can choose to try to find a property without even leaving your home or office if you don't want to. Many BMV properties are available due to repossession, therefore picking up a property which is BMV doesn't mean that it's rundown or requires work so you could easily buy a place and have it rented out in a short space of time. Seeking out for a property couldn't be easier with specialist websites letting you find one and purchasing a property is as easy because ABC. When you've found a website you're buying by and have found your property there are just a few simple steps to selecting your property. 1 . Add your chosen property to your basket plus continue through to the checkout. 2 . At the checkout you will end up asked to choose your payment method often credit as well as debit card, though if a checkout is operated on the surface such as PayPal or Google checkout you can often decide to pay with one of their accounts if you have one. 3. Once your payment is completed you will receive the order confirmation and will be emailed a receipt. All real estate are removed from the website once purchased and it is essential that most information provided is correct especially your email address for the reason that all correspondence regarding your purchase of the property will be completed through email. If you notice any mistakes with your advice then make sure you contact the company you have purchased your property as a result of so that they can correct any mistakes as soon as possible. All websites which will sell BMV properties have to ensure that the seller is in a position to sell the property and a questionnaire needs to be filled in by your seller answering a wide range of different questions regarding the property. Skin to agree to selling the property below market value, whether they don't agree then they cannot sell their property. It is easy to have a website which offers BMV properties by using a search engine and hunting for BMV property sellers or BMV property leads, you're going to be offered many different choices in websites which will all deliver different properties for you to choose from.

“Why are old lovers able to become friends? Two reasons: They never truly loved each other, or they love each other still.” Whitney Otto- How to Make an American Quilt
2018, Fall Semester
With the announcement after Fall mid-terms that Lin-Hu would not be returning from her maternity leave, the University offered Thalia a teaching position for the Spring semester, with classes in languages and history. She was given the former teacher’s office, larger than the closet sized cubicle she had been sharing with two grad students. Elated to have a permanent space in the history department to call home, she was having fun buying furniture and decorating, and getting ready to go home for the holidays.
“Stacey, if I’m gonna get outta here at a decent hour tonight, I need to get off the phone, and get more of these boxes unpacked,” she says, pushing up from where she had been sitting on the floor, sorting through a stack of books.
“Ok, mija, just let us know when you finalize your flight plans,” the quiet, motherly voice says over the phone. “You’re father is so excited, he’s already planning to pick you up at the airport and take you straight to Portillos.”
She laughs. “Papá does realize I won’t be home for, like, another six weeks, right? I can’t make it home for Thanksgiving and Christmas.”
“I know, I keep telling him,” her voice drops. “Will you be joining Chris and his daughter for Thanksgiving?”
Thalia pinches her lips to hold in the sigh threatening to burst out. “Probably not. I think I’ll join some of the foreign exchange students and help them serve dinner at the shelter.”
Stacey is silent for a moment. “Thalia, are you okay, sweetheart?”
Tears sting at her eyes and she blinks them away just as quickly. “I will be. I’m getting there.” Thalia chuckles looking at the messy room and boxes still waiting to be unpacked. “I really gotta go. If I’m not home by dark, my landlord will start to wonder why I even bother paying rent if I’m never home.”
“You are never home! Isn’t that why you keep all your favorite things in your work space?”
“You know me too well, Máma,” she replies.
She and her step-mother exchange goodbyes. Turning the radio up, she steps back and visualizes the plan for the empty shelves. A student stops by with questions about an essay assignment, and before she knows it, it’s almost time to call it a day. “One more shelf,” she says to nobody but herself.

Trump never stopped running for president. On January 10, 2017, before his inauguration, his campaign paid $75,123.75 to continue renting space in Trump Tower. (In other words, donations to Trump’s campaign ended up in Trump’s pocket. What a surprise.) Trump filed an official statement of candidacy with the Federal Election Commission on the day of his inauguration, January 20. He held his first reelection campaign rally less than a month later, on February 18. And he aired his first 2020 campaign ad on May 1, 2017.
Trump’s “permanent campaign” strategy has enabled the Trump Organization to rake in over $1.5 million in money donated to the reelection. Highlights (through March of 2019) include:
Over $1 million ($450,000+ per year) for rent at Trump Tower in New York City
$69,300 for rent at Trump Plaza in New York ($3,850 per month)
$61,000 to “Trump Restaurants” for rent (originally $1,000 per month, currently up to $3,000 per month)
Another $17,500+ to Trump Restaurants for “facility rental/catering”
Over $325,000 for lodging at the Trump International Hotel in Washington, D.C.
About another $60,000 or so for facility rental/catering at the Trump International in Washington
Over $17,500 for lodging/facility rental/catering at the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada
Over $12,000 for facility rental/catering/meals at the Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey
Over $200,000 to the Trump Corporation for “consulting”
Even $1,750+ to the supposedly discontinued “Trump Ice LLC” (his failed bottled-water company) for “office supplies”
Nevertheless, today marks the first “official” day of Trump’s 2020 reelection campaign. He has chosen to hold his first “official” campaign rally in Orlando, Florida. Now, the Orlando Sentinel is generally right-leaning, and it has a decades-long history of favoring Republican presidential candidates:
“This newspaper has a history of presidential appointments favoring Republicans starting in the mid-20th century. Except for Lyndon Johnson in 1964, the Sentinel backed Republican presidential nominees from 1952 through 2004, when we recommended John Kerry over another four years of George W. Bush. As recently as 2012 we recommended Republican Mitt Romney because of what seemed at the time to be Obama’s failure to adequately manage the nation’s finances.”
The Sentinel has chosen this very day to announce its endorsement of...
...Literally Anyone Else in 2020.
“Some readers will wonder how we could possibly eliminate a candidate so far before an election, and before knowing the identity of his opponent.Because there’s no point pretending we would ever recommend that readers vote for Trump. ...
“There was a time when even a single lie — a phony college degree, a bogus work history — would doom a politician’s career. Not so for Trump, who claimed in 2017 that he lost the popular vote because millions of people voted illegally (they didn’t). In 2018 he said North Korea was no longer a nuclear threat (it is). And in 2019 he said windmills cause cancer (they don’t). Just last week he claimed the media fabricated unfavorable results from his campaign’s internal polling (it didn’t). ...
“Trump’s successful assault on truth is the great casualty of this presidency, followed closely by his war on decency. Trump insults political opponents and national heroes alike with middle-school taunts. He demonstrates no capacity for empathy or remorse. He misuses his office to punish opponents, as when he recently called for a boycott of AT&T to get even with his least favorite media outlet, CNN. He tears down institutions, once airily suggesting the U.S. should try having a leader for life as China now allows. He seems incapable of learning a lesson, telling an ABC interviewer last week — just two months after Robert Mueller’s report on election interference was released — that he would accept dirt on an opponent from Russia or China. ...
“Trump has diminished our standing in the world. He reneges on deals, attacks allies and embraces enemies. This nation must never forget that humiliating public moment in Helsinki in 2018 when the president of the United States chose to accept Vladimir Putin’s denials of Russian interference in the 2016 election over the unanimous assessment of the American intelligence community. Such a betrayal by a U.S. president would have been the unforgivable political sin in normal times. As if that’s not enough, Trump declares his love for North Korea’s Kim Jong-un, a genuine villain who starves and enslaves his people and executes his enemies with antiaircraft guns and flamethrowers. But he wrote the president a ‘beautiful letter.’
“But the economy!”
“The S&P 500 was up about 21% between Trump’s inauguration and May 31 of his third year in office. Under President Obama, it was up about 56% in that same period. Unemployment is headed down, as it was during seven straight years under Obama. Wages are up, and that’s a welcome change. But GDP increases so far are no better than some periods under Obama. Deficit spending under Obama was far too high, in part because of the stimulus needed to dig out of the Great Recession. Under Trump, it’s still headed in the wrong direction, once again pushing $1 trillion even though the economy is healthy. Trump seems to care nothing about the deficit and the national debt.”

Tumblr media
Inside Trump Tower, swank suit-maker Marcraft Clothes once rented the entire 18th floor, outfitting its offices with fireplaces, mahogany-lined closets and two bars for schmoozing customers. But then Marcraft fell $664,000 behind on rent and went out of business last year — its assets having dwindled to $40.75 in a checking account and “1,200 damaged coats,” according to court filings. One floor up, a business school once led by Kardashian family matriarch Kris Jenner was consumed by lawsuits, falling $198,000 behind on payments to Trump Tower by October 2020, according to court papers. And on the 21st and 22nd floors, the company that made Ivanka Trump shoes racked up $1.5 million in unpaid rent, according to a lawsuit that the Trump Organization filed this year. But through all that — as Trump Tower has dealt with imploding tenants, political backlash and a broader, pandemic-related slump in Manhattan office leasing since last year — it has been able to count on one reliable, high-paying tenant: former president Donald Trump’s own political operation. Starting in March, one of his committees, Make America Great Again PAC, paid $37,541.67 per month to rent office space on the 15th floor of Trump Tower — a space previously rented by his campaign — according to campaign-finance filings and a person familiar with the political action committee. As a kid, before I knew who I was, I used to hear others talk about Gay Rights. And it confused me why gays had to have rights, when we don’t go around talking about heterosexual rights. And each time I would be no closer to a conclusion and would shelf that thought away again until the next time it popped up uninvited.
I was just who I was. A kid. A regular kid. A regular kid who enjoyed sports and being in shirts and pants because then no one would keep hounding me to sit with my legs “closed.” I hated the long hair my mother wanted me to keep. It made me warm in humid Singapore, was always messy, and was a chore to dry after each shower. From every practical standpoint, skirts and long hair made no sense to me. My mother was a girly-girl, who wanted her girls to learn the piano, dress in skirts and have long ponytails. Sadly, other than the piano, I was a huge disappointment to her.
I had always been an old soul in a young body. Everything had to make practical sense or I would have a hard time accepting it. Growing up, school was hard for an old soul like me. Kids everywhere seemed childish, and my best friends were books, which could help me escape reality, even if just for a while.
When I got older, I was happy to join the workforce, where I thought I’d be around mature adults, and my world would start to make more sense to me. Boy, was I in for a shocker. I had not realized that common sense was not common, basic courtesy was not basic, and ownership and accountability were not owned by many. I also learned that ethics and integrity counted for nothing when you were in sales and in the Insurance industry dominated by ruthless managers. After 6 years watching those honest fall, and those merciless soar, I dragged my sorry ass back to school, hoping and praying grad school would be different.
That’s where I met her. I remember that first day of introductions, when she sat at my 2 o’clock. I remember her introducing herself from country ABC and having hobbies in culinary and photography. I remember our class having to walk to the library for a school tour after, and me sidling up to her side as the lights turned red where we waiting to cross the road. I oh-so-casually looked at the birds on the tree above, the old guy taking a smoke just a distance away, and then finally, just nonchalantly turned to her and said, “Hi, so you’re into photography too? What’s your favorite camera?”
And that was the start of our last 4 sweet years together. During school breaks that 1st year, we took trips to Bangkok and Australia, and school took us to more trips in U.S., Switzerland, and Italy. We were young, and everything was rosy. We took budget planes for just 2 to 3 days out of Singapore on a whim, and did budget road trips for weeks, just booking the following nights’ accommodation as we went along. We visited her family in country ABC and took them on their first road trips to different states, and those improved her parents’ estranged relationship as well. At that time, we made do, living out of her tiny common room rental for 850 a month, in a small condo unit shared by (officially) 5 other housemates. 2 guys were in the master bedroom, a girl in a similar common room, a guy in the bomb shelter and a girl in the kitchen storeroom (where the last two had no windows and therefore, kept their doors open every night). I was her regular “secret” guest, and the neighboring room always had her boyfriend over.
That place was a nightmare. The room was tiny, fitted with a queen bed, a 0.4m x 1m wide study desk, a simple foldable IKEA chair, and a narrow (1.5m high) two panel wardrobe. With all the furniture against the 4 walls of the room, there was only a 0.5m walkway between the door and bed, and bed and wardrobe + study desk. (Think how you couldn’t even pull the chair all the way out to sit at the desk!) Luckily, she only brought one suitcase with her, and that had nowhere else to go except to be balanced precariously on top of the flimsy wardrobe held up by duct tape. There were tiny bugs constantly on the headboard of the bed, the walls, and the sides of the wardrobe, and squishing them only left small dots of red on the wood and paint.
After school ended, we both found basic jobs in the financial sector, earning basic salaries (3k each) that were barely enough to cover rent and the 50 grand of study debts. We lived simple lives on her culinary skills and moved out to a slightly bigger place (with no bugs!) as soon as the previous rental contract ended. Deciding on a small studio in the far areas of Western Singapore was hard when we only had a budget of about $1500 for rental. Fortunately for us, heaven smiled down on us during our search. I will never forget the moment we signed on the line to rent that new place, and the pure elation on her face mirrored my emotions the first day we wheeled her luggage through the door. We were both so overwhelmed that we just stood in the middle of the completely unfurnished unit, just turning around and around to look at the “huge” space we now had. The landlord was kind enough to provide us the keys 7 days before New Year’s Day, and we enjoyed our first homecooked Christmas dinner there. Just 400 square feet of luxurious blessing (including our very own bathroom).
2018 to 2019, we were happy. As happy as can be. If Singapore allowed, I would have married that girl, and made her my wife. I knew that I wanted her around, through thick and thin, bugs and all, for as long as I could. But because we couldn’t, we tried to apply for PR for her. Twice. And failed twice. Despite everything, we were happy. She enjoyed her work and colleagues, and I had a job I enjoyed, in a decent company, with great colleagues and a great leader. Everyday, time seemed to fly by as I get so engrossed in picking up new experiences and knowledge at work. And at the end of each day, I was happiest, running to catch the bus that would take me the few short stops to her office, and we would head home together.
2020, the world went crazy. When Covid-19 started, nobody took it seriously. When they finally did, it was too late. Singapore being small, seemed to put its economy before citizens’ health, and pretty soon, we saw new policies introduced so fast and furious, it was hard to keep up. Racism escalated real fast as fear grew. Everyone’s primal survival instinct kicked in, took over, and overwhelmed. We saw hoarding like never before, where previous proud displays of extravagance in the form of luxury goods, were replaced by flaunting of overstocked pantries of unnecessarily excessive daily necessities. Households storing shelves of toilet paper and rice, splashed out on social media, instigated herd mentality, and created dangerous vicious cycles. It was at this time that our rental contract was due for renewal, and because of travel restrictions, we saw a larger than usual demand for rental property. We saw increased negative correlation between our salaries and expenses but still, we were thankful for just having each other.
Unfortunately, fate reared its cruel head, giving us first-hand experience of Murphy’s law. Her father was diagnosed with cancer towards the end of the year, and that was the start of the end of the improving relationship between her parents. Both our companies also underwent major restructuring that year. Coincidently, both companies started offshoring parts of operation to neighboring country XYZ. And it seemed ridiculous then, because the number of Covid-19 cases in that country was heading north at breakneck speed. Every single day, more than half of both of our offshore teams were on medical, hospital or compassionate leave. Work was not getting completed, and to make things worse, both offshore teams seemed to have the same zero accountability and pride in their work. Every day was a mental torture to engage them in their finger-pointing, others-blaming games, even when evidence of their negligence was staring at them point-blank in the face.
Having a slightly better command of English than her, I took it in my stride facing these “Taichi experts.” But when my boss (that I had a huge respect for) lost his job due to the restructuring (and workplace politics), I started looking out. I was fortunate enough to be able to land another opportunity and left.
Her job was harder hit. Her team now had to rely on the offshore team to finish the daily BAU wok before Singapore team could check and sign off. I remember when she first joined, she was trained for a month before she caught up with the daily deadlines and managed to complete the day’s checks by 5pm daily. Somehow, their XYZ offshore team were still exceeding all deadlines by a wide margin (with massive amounts of repeated errors, which they would then trigger new blame games), causing the Singapore Team to finish their checks (and “fights”) and call it an end mostly after 10pm.
While barely keeping her sanity at work, watching her constantly forcing a smile to comfort her mother, who was struggling with a self-centered patient exploiting his illness, I saw the bags under her eyes gain prominence over the months. We tried desperately to find a new suitable job for her, as her initial Singapore team of almost 30 (mostly seniors with more than 10 years’ experience) dwindled to the last 5 of them. During this time, her mouth struggled to maintain its curve upwards, and it was heart-wrenching to witness the glimmer of hope fade from her eyes. I knew she missed her mother, as Covid-19 prevented us from traveling back to see her. I knew she was not enjoying her “new” role at work, working with the XYZ team. But my hands were tied. I begged everyone and anyone I knew to look out for any suitable job willing to consider a foreigner. It was a losing battle.
After 8 months, she started applying outside of Singapore as well, thinking to leave it to fate. Shortly, a call from ABC country offered her an interview. Things went fast, and in a few short weeks, they were extending an offer, with one condition, that being she was to board the first available plane back after completing her notice period.
I was crushed. I knew I couldn’t make her choose me (and continuing working with XYZ team), but suddenly I felt like I had been told I have just one more month to live. My life, as I knew it, was ending in just 4 very short weeks. We both knew her current job in its current form, was destroying her mental health, and I couldn’t bear to keep her here like that.
After the initial roller coaster of emotions calmed down, we strategized, trying to accommodate all the local places we had always talked about visiting, with the packing and shipping of her stuff.
Today marks the 33rd day she is not by my side, and all this time, I have been trying not to be cynical when considering the factors that contributed to our current situation. Days and nights blur into one, as I try tirelessly to find myself a job in country ABC, hoping against hope that we may soon reunite.
