Research and Planning For Trailers: Part 19- Permission E-mail to School

Before our shoot dates I had to write an e-mail to the school asking for permission to shoot on the assigned dates given by our media teacher. Since I am the director it was my duty to write the the the mail to the Principal and a few other teacher’s who are in charge of the school’s activities.

The e-mail I wrote:

Respected Ma’am,I am Aaria Patel, director of the A level media group 4. I am writing this mail in regards to the foundation portfolio shoots commencing in the last week of January. Kindly find the details below: Group 4-

  Sandesh Ramraje is an actor from outside. He is vaccinated (2 doses). I have attached his vaccine certificate below.

All the actors listed, except Sandesh Ramraje, will be required for both the days of the shoot. Sandesh is only required for the first day (28th January, Saturday) I request you to kindly permit us for the above requirements.

Final Cast Selection

Shortly after the auditions were held, we contacted the list of actors we finalised for the shoot.

We casted Jiya Kanani as Isha, her natural wit and ability to express complex emotions added to Isha’s character.

We casted Rhythm Mamania, from the 6th grade in MRV as a younger version of Isha, given that she could too, act well and resembled our actress playing Isha, Jiya Kanani, thus doing justice to looking like a childhood version of her.

We casted Jaden Smith as Vivan, who’s introverted side and unique style gave dimension to Vivan’s character. Additionally, he is friends with Jiya would help us create coherence in acting in the scenes that feature both of them as they work well together.

We casted Tarunya Morris as Khushi, Isha’s best friend who is also closely acquainted to our lead actress for Isha, Jiya Kanani, which would therefore ease out the process of having them work together.

Lastly, for the party scene, we also had a set of background actors from our juniors’ batch, along with some of the production designer’s friends, and some of our own classmates.

all of us brought a bunch of props from home, stuff that we though would elevate our set design. most of these things were various kids of Christmas décor. We realized that the walls looked too empty and we needed to get tinsel and other décor to liven it up. So Aaria and I went to Hill road and brought tinsel and balloons as décor. we ended up spending 650/-  We had pre-decided that we would have a budget of 500 on both shoot days incase of any last minute emergencies.

Location

We decided to go on a location scouting trip to assess the various aspects of each location and if we would be able to shoot there. We looked around for sites that would match the mood and tone of our opening sequence, and if we needed to make any changes to suit the tone of the film after obtaining the necessary permissions. 

Since covid protocols are still being taken, we can’t shoot outside campus premises and so we decided to see our schools seventh floor. Aaria and I had a few places in mind where we could shoot. We ended up deciding on The library in the seventh floor and the pantry area. we also decided to use the faculty lounge and the corridor for a few shots.

since we required bright overhead lighting in a fancy area we decided to use the library as our dining area. Our kitchen scene was gonna have a dark and grim tone so the pantry was perfect.

Film Title

We decided to go with what I had named my story originally, ‘Ho No!’. we all agreed that a Christmas pun is a good idea on the title. Aaria and I were certain that we wanted the font to be  a candy cane font. we also wanted the “Ho” part of the title to be happy and Christmassy and the “no” part to have blood like drips from the candy cane swirl along with devil horns. we were contemplating on whether to have the exclamation be a knife or pitchfork. this title would hold great importance to the film since it captures the essence of the film.
