I was SA’d in Marrakesh, Morocco

I’ll just state the facts: • I was in the Medina at an electronics shop • I was focused looking forward to the shop owner and someone bumped into me on my right and groped my chest • I screamed “Hey!” and pushed him off • He stumbled away, the man next to me saw what happened, shook his head and did a hand motion that the guy wasn’t right in the head • I was shaking from shock, contemplated calling the police, but the situation was over in less than 2 seconds. I decided not to since I didn’t know where the man went and I was safe. I’ve also seen police rough up locals and didn’t want that to happen to this mentally unwell person • A few minutes later, I walked into this alterations store to fix my bag. Hussein, the man pictured here, fixed it and afterwards invited me to sit in his shop for tea and snacks with two other male friends in his shop • My body was conflicted with the extreme contrast of events with something really bad happening to this very kind moment and my body started crying to release the stress • The three men didn’t understand English and I used google translate to write to them in Arabic: “A man just groped me on the street. It made me very angry. Thank you for being so kind to me. Evil is always balanced with good” • They all understood and solemnly nodded • They fed me, hydrated me, and immediately filled my cup of light up. But my body is emotionally drained from flight or fight, ruminating, anger, and hyper alertness

I hate that this is one of my stories in Morocco, but here we are. Of course you’ve all witnessed the hundreds of positive experiences I’ve had here and this is the first really bad one.

hi! I thought I'd introduce myself and my biology blog with some pictures from my internship this summer. I worked at my University's collection lab on a NSF grant with a huge, 50+ year old army ant (and their “guests”) collection! longer image descriptions under the cut :-)

1st picture- the original vials were all in rough shape. they all needed ethanol changed, but for the mites we couldn’t risk taking all of them out as there were sometimes hundreds of microscopic mites in one tiny vial. we did put new ethanol in, but only to fill it back up and put a new stopper on. to ensure that they wouldn’t dry up, we also double vialed them with more ethanol, which is what you see in the second picture.

2nd picture- this is what the transferred vials looked like! I worked primarily on transferring vials, and they really took up a lot of space on the lab bench. we had a cart full of them waiting to be put into the database much of the summer.

3rd picture- we took a day to learn how to pin some of the specimens, and it was really fun to do! this is an eciton vagans worker collected from an emigration column in Napo, Ecuador in June of 1971. 

all in all, it was an amazing experience to work with this collection! I still find it funny that I, an art student, managed to find a place in the very heart of our biology department. the blending of art and science is important to me, so I’m glad I got to step away from my position as an artist and see the ant world from a science perspective.

Goodbye Sahara. I’m sad to leave, but the wind calls us. One last sandy dusty ride, one last look in the mirrors. It brings me great sadness that it might be the last time I ever see her. Who knows where life will take us.

I’d be very happy if I could see her again sometime later in life. For now, we head West 😈😼🏍️
