Fitz's characterization is so interesting and so hard. He's both very kind AND a bit of an entitled jerk, and most people only manage to capture one of the two.
I think this is well-illustrated in the first few chapters of the series. Fitz and Sophie spend a lot of these chapters rolling their eyes and sniping at each other, because they both have an attitude about the whole thing. In particular, Fitz has his attitude about elvin superiority, and Sophie immediately responds to that negatively.
He'd never heard of Albert Einstein? The theory of relativity was dumb? She wasn't sure how to argue. He seemed so ridiculously confidentâit was unnerving.
On the other hand, it's very clear that Fitz's heart is in the right place (or at least, a well-meaning place). He has his attitude of elvin superiority, but he's thrilled to welcome Sophie into it as well.
Fitz nudged her arm. "Hey. It's not your fault. You believed what they taught youâI'm sure I'd have done the same thing. But it's time you knew the truth. This is how the world really works. It's not magic. It's just how it is."
(And undoubtedly, he's right. He would have believed what he'd been taughtâhe did, just different beliefs!)
The thing is, Sophie doesn't particularly want to jump aboard the elvin superiority train that he's so excited about.
"Well, it's like you're saying, 'Hey, Sophie, take everything you've ever learned about anything and throw it away.'" "Actually, that is what I'm saying." He flashed a smug grin. "Humans do the best they canâbut their minds can't begin to comprehend the complexities of reality." "And what, elves' minds are better?" "Of course.
Fitz reads as a total jerk with what he's saying! He's completely ignorant of the fact that his belief that humans are stupid and evil is like, gonna hurt Sophie's feelings. Because that's what he's been taught!
I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Fitz's character is hugely about prejudice, about people who believe what they are taught, even though it's wrong. And his character is about those people who then have to relearn their beliefs!
Fitz makes so much progress throughout the series in combating his own prejudice, largely through befriending Sophie. His character arc is one of my absolute favorites from any media, ever. I've gone through a lot of the same things he has, having to learn about prejudice and deal with my own biases, the lies that I was taught. His character is very meaningful to me!
But I think that's a piece that so often gets missed when people try to capture Fitz's character. Some people only see the bad parts and choose to portray him as totally evil. Some people focus on the good parts and portray him as more of a victim.
But I don't think either interpretation is totally right. Fitz is nuanced. He means well and truly tries to be kind within his worldview, and once he truly starts to realize his worldview is bad, he works on it! That's way more than a lot of people do. But he he makes a lot of mistakes along the way.
That's a fascinating, relevant character. And that's why he'll always be one of my favorites.
#starting some rereading before unraveled and I'm REALLY trying to work on recapturing fitz's character!#it's so difficult to do but I want to write him again and I want to get it really really RIGHT#kotlc#fitz vacker#stan fitz vacker or perish#meta#kotlc thoughts with catherine#book 1

creating stories
Jimmy: So, everyone, what does a story NEED?
Grian: A character! Martyn: A setting! Pearl, a gleam in their eyes, in a near-whisperL REVENGE.
 DOUBLE POST TODAY Because i'm posting a redo of an old chapter as well. These may become a common thing :>
Redo of the first chapter! Second new incorrect quote will be out later!
This is set in their highschool years, all siblings.
438 words
~~~
Jimmyâs whole class had been told by their English teacher that he had to go home and explain what made a good story to his family. For homework. And whilst most kids werenât going to do it, Jimmy was DEFINITELY going to do it. What if the teacher asked his siblings? And they would totally rat him out.Â
Anyway, Jimmy had forced all 3 of his siblings to sit in the front room and listen to him. Grian, 16, had zoned out ages ago and was just tapping his knuckles on the table. Martyn, 19, did not want to be there as he wasnât even in school anymore, but Jimmy had threatened to cry. So. Pearl, 13, was apparently loving it.
Jimmy, 12, had been ranting about what a story needed for the past hour. And finally decided to test if his siblings had been listening. âSo, can any of you tell me what a good story NEEDS?âHe hummed, waving his hands around dramatically. After no one responded, he picked on the first one he saw, which unfortunately was- âGrian, you go first!â
Grian, realising he had been called upon, shot his head up, after a couple of seconds and processing the question he responded, âAh. Characters?â
âYes, Very good! Martyn?â
Martyn, as quick as always, had been listening the whole time, âA setting.â
Jimmy smiled, happy that at least one of his siblings was listening to him. âAh, see itâs not that hard guys! Now, pearl-â Jimmyâs sentence stopped as he stared at the girl. âPearl.?â
The young girl was smiling like she was on a sugar high, crouched over her paper as she doodled down what seemed to be a character plan, completely unaware of what was happening around her. âPeeaarrlll! Were you listening to me?â Jimmy complained, yelling at her.
She looked up at the yell, âOf course I was listening!âAfter a couple seconds, after realising they were probably waiting for her to respond to Jimmyâs earlier question. Which she had not heard, she added. âWhat was the question again?âÂ
Jimmy sighed sadly, âWhat does a good story need?â The girl responded immediately with no hesitation, âOh, obviously every good story needs some REVENGE!âShe giggled madly to herself. Oh yea, they definitely needed to get their sister checked out for.. Something. No way she was completely sane in that head of hers.
After a few minutes of silence Martyn stood up, â-Right, Well I think thatâs enough for one day. Jimmy, we will tell your teacher you did the homework.âHe patted the boy on the head as he left the room.
me: haha im downloading destiny 2 again for lightfall
the destiny 2 fic thats still at like. february 2022. in terms of story progression. that i havent updated because i dont know enough about the story of the past few seasons to properly write them in:
#I HAD A PLOTLINE PLANNED#WHERE THE SCORN WOULD GET MORE AFFECTED BY THE DARKNESS & ALL#BUT I HAVENT BEEN PAYING ATTENTION#i think i might just watch the cutscenes of the past few seasons on youtube#bc i dont think?? i have the season passes?? for the past few seasons????#& then wait out lightfall before planning out that storyline#i havent seen any story trailers or whatever so im completely in the dark lmao#hopefully lightfall will motivate me enough to work on tsbesg again i miss patch#i never meant for tsbesg to be completely canon compliant but i do want to follow the main story. just with the scorn present#they are my sillies#ill figure it out#i still have to write a chapter of them joining on the uh. the missions. back in the season that launched with witch queen#(was it risen i cant remember)#i have to write at LEAST one chapter of them just dicking around fighting lightbearer hive i think they would like that#why would patch have to kill ghosts when they have several friends who do it for fun. hm.#its kinda funny bc when i started the fic i ran out of material#i had to bullshit so much just for the seasons to catch up#ESPECIALLY during hunt#if i ever end up rewriting the earlier chapters one key thing is that i have to fix the timeline with the whole osiris thing#actually make everything line up more yk?#but yeah in the period between when i started (december... 2020? 2021?) and witch queen i started getting a little off track#my investment in destiny kinda dwindled once id finished witch queen#i was still really into the characters (yes i saw the cutscene of orisis waking up yes i cried) but the game itself just#and maybe it was my depression. honestly#like i started meds nearly 3 months AFTER wq#who knows. who the fuck knows. i NEED the fuckigngnfu leviathan scenes. i NEED patch to get to the leviathan i need crow to#reconcile with the scorn through his arc in that season (plot spoilers? eh. plot ideas)#im gonna go reread the most recent few chapters i need the refresher on where i stopped#ALSO. ALSO. worst case scenario i skip some less plot relevant more self indulgent scenes (like with the hive ghosts)#and put those in separate oneshots. 'takes place between chapter so & so'
Last Sentence Tag Game
Rules: Write the latest line from your wip (or post where you last left off in your art) and tag as many people as there are words in the line. Make a new post, donât reblog.
Thanks to @existentialscientist for the tag! This is more than a line (felt odd not to have the previous paragraph for context) and not technically from the most recent thing I've poked at, but I need to motivate myself to work on this one again.
Padme steps carefully around the little speederbike parked just inside the entrance and then finds herself effectively in the middle of the apartment two seconds later. Ahsokaâs apartment is⊠small. Smaller than Padmeâs closet. The single main room is furnished with a bed, a tiny kitchenette, and a door that presumably leads to a refresher.
âDo you want anyâwell, uh, water? I donât have tea, sorry.â
â from Defiance, a Star Wars fix-it longfic that's been simmering in my WIPs for almost 2 years so far and is nowhere near finished
No pressure, of course, but I'll tag @squirrelwriter and @good-beans! And I know it's a cop-out, but if you're reading this and want to share something, consider yourself tagged as well :P
#Not a terribly exciting excerpt but it's the most recently added#And of all the WIPs I have this is the one I'm most determined to finish#...Eventually#A few chapters are complete but I want to get the whole thing at least fully drafted before posting#Maybe I'd be more motivated if I started putting them up but I KNOW my update schedule would be horrendously irregular#And I like being able to go back and edit early chapters at my leisure#...Perhaps if I'm really feeling it someday I'll put the first chapter up here and then start posting on AO3 when the thing is largely done#Also I'm slowly trying to post a bit more rather than simply dropping off finished art/fic and fading into the ether for weeks/months#I think this is the first time I've responded to being tagged in a tag game#Though I appreciate the previous couple times I have!#I'm just. Shy. I guess. Kind of? Maybe self-conscious is more accurate#And I'm also good at saying I'll do something later and then not doing that Cx#Patchy Writes#Patchy Babbles#Tag Games
The Bachelors and How They Sleep
hello lovelies! Have some more of my headcanons. These HCs are for a gn! reader. If you have any requests then feel free to send me an ask! Reblogs and likes are greatly appreciated đ·đ€
Alex:
đ Moves a lot during his sleep. But he doesn't outright punch you by accident. You always seem to end up being under him.
đ Mumbles a lot too. One time, you woke up to him counting to himself, just like how he counts his bicep curls.
đ Wakes up early, just a few moments before you. He says it's because he needs to exercise the first thing in the morning. But it's actually because he felt you move out of the bed and he doesn't like to be alone.
đ Gives you all the pillows to make you comfortable. He says it's important for your muscles to get a good night's rest. He ends up hogging the blankets.
Elliott:
đȘ¶ Sleeps like a dead man. He doesn't move at all, save for the occasional turning to the side to snuggle against you.
đȘ¶ It takes him a while to finally succumb to slumber. He says it's because he's used to listening to the waves of the beach to fall asleep.
đȘ¶ Silk pajamas, the man has sets of them. He keeps his hair down while sleeping so you sometimes wake up to your whole face being covered by his locks.
đȘ¶ He's a late riser, mostly because he sleeps late too. He tells you that he writes better at night and he doesn't allow himself to rest until he's finished writing one chapter at least.
Harvey:
đ©ïž Sometimes, Harvey forgets to take off his glasses before he goes to bed. Which is why he has so many broken ones that he tries to hide from you by kicking them under the bed.
đ©ïž Professional cuddler. He always makes sure you're in his arms or vice versa. He needs to touch you in order to get a good night's rest. Doesn't matter if you two are spooning or if it's just his hand on top of your arm.
đ©ïž Snores a lot. Goes "hoooonk mimimimimi hoooonk mimimimi"
đ©ïž I like to imagine him wearing those pajamas that's like just a long night gown and those floppy pointy hats. You know the one.
Sam:
đž Alex mumbles in his sleep, Sam straight up sings. Usually it's outbursts of the choruses of his songs, sometimes he'd hum the tune out. You have a video of him playing air drums while sleeping. You sent the video to Abigail and Sebastian, and they never let Sam hear the end of it.
đž He wakes up super late most of the time. But on the rare occasion where he doesn't, he cooks breakfast and serves it to you in bed. Complete with a flower in a vase and everything.
đž Always kisses you before he falls asleep. Straight up drags you to his side of the bed to peck your lips.
đž Would take off his shirt to put it on you. He says he doesn't want you getting cold at night and waves you off when you refuse, worried about his wellbeing. "I don'T gEt sicK eaSiLy, Babe," ends up in the clinic to get meds the next day.
Sebastian:
đŸ It's my headcanons and I say he moves a LOT during his sleep. So much so that you end up on the floor when you wake up. He refuses to believe that he does that.
đŸ His sleep schedule depends on you. He refuses to sleep unless you're already in the house. He doesn't like the feeling of sleeping when he doesn't know you're safe. You'll find him waiting for you on the porch.
đŸ Prefers to sleep on the side of the bed where the sun doesn't shine.
đŸ Immediately feels it when you get out of the bed. And he wakes up immediately, groggy and needing a few minutes to register where he is. Even if you're just going to get a glass of water, Sebastian would wake up and ask where you're going.
Shane:
đŁ This man says good night to all the chickens in your coop before he goes to bed, I decided.
đŁ He used to get little to no hours of sleep but after moving in with you, he tries to get enough sleep as possible.
đŁ Hugs you in his sleep, all the time.
đŁ He wakes up the same moment you do, sometimes earlier. He gave himself the job to take care of your farm animals so you don't have to work too hard. So he wakes early to get the job done as soon as possible to spend breakfast with you.
đŁ My brother in Yoba, he would wake up in the middle of the night to get a snack. You would sometimes catch him in the middle of drinking cows milk straight out of the bottle in front of the open fridge.
Satoru Gojo
[Chapter 29] First Day of School
â Previous Chapter - Story Masterlist - Next Chapter â
Pairing: Satoru Gojo x f!Reader
*Making a very important poll soon (aka in a few minutes)â€ïž
Discord +18 - Twitter - Ko-Fi
âDoes this look okay?â Ren walks into your room with the cutest outfit imaginable. Today is the day: his first day of kindergarten. Youâre nearly in tears every time you look at him, not being able to believe that your baby boy is ready to go to school. Heâs so excited for it, and you donât want to shatter it by cryingÂ
âYou look so handsome, baby. Go show your daddy.â You tell him, knowing that Satoru is downstairs trying to make Renâs bento box perfect. You need a moment to let yourself cry and compose yourself before you drop him off. Heâs just a baby, why do you have to send him to school?
Ren nods in response, and walks out of your room to go to where his father is. You take a deep breath, trying to contain yourself. Itâs his first day of school, youâre not sending him off to war. Itâs just hard to accept that your child is growing up so fast.
The baby that you were just carrying in your arms is going to school. You have to gather yourself, you canât be a mess in front of Ren who is already scared of what awaits him. Satoru is going to comfort him while you figure something out.
âHey, buddy. Are you ready?â The biggest smile comes to Satoruâs lips as he sees his son walk towards him. Satoru tries to finish the special lunch that heâs been set on making for Ren, before his son gets to him.
âI am. Waiting for mommy.â Ren answers, and it tugs Satoruâs heart. For how much longer is Ren going to call you mommy? When will it just be mom? Satoru takes a deep breath, he knew that spending too much time with you meant that your sadness would become infectious.Â
âWhat do you want for breakfast? Cereal?â Satoru asks, and Ren nods in response. He doesnât really care to have a more intricate breakfast, heâs not that hungry this early.Â
âWill school always be this early?â Ren questions, walking over to the informal dining table thatâs in the kitchen. Satoru chuckles, knowing that it gets worse from hereâ At least kindergarten isnât too bad.
âItâll always be at the same time.â Satoru answers, and he sees the frown that appears on Renâs face. That just ruined everything for the little boy, and Satoru canât blame him. âBut hey, if you cooperate Iâll let you sleep in on Saturday and Sunday.â
âReally?â A hopeful spark appears in Renâs eyes, and Satoru almost feels bad. Heâll do whatever will work.
âYes sir.â Satoru smirks. Ren loves the deal, therefore heâll cooperate as much as he has to. Satoru has this whole parenting thing under wraps. He walks over to Ren, putting the bowl of cereal in front of Ren, âEat up, honey. You have a long day ahead of you.â
âOkay, Iâm ready!â You announce, walking into the kitchen to find Satoru and Ren sitting together. Tears well up in your eyes as you see the pair and you hold your breath,Â
âActually, give me a minute.â
âCan you replay the song?â Ren asks, and Satoru wastes no time in starting the song over again and turning it up to max volume. Anything to drown out the sniffles that come from you. Youâre almost at the school, you need to gather yourself. Ren canât see you crying like this.
âBaby shark is not that sad for you to be reacting like this.â Satoru tries to joke, which only makes you sob. Heâd love to join you in the crying, but someone has to be strong for Ren. âYou must really hate the song.â
âShut up.â You tell him in complete tears. Heâs trying to cheer you up but nothing is working today. You have to soothe yourself. Your son is going to be fine.
âWeâre almost at the school.â Satoru announces, and Ren looks outside the car excitedly. Satoruâs word of mouth worked, and the child is more than excited to go to school. Though Satoruâs announcement is more for you, his way of telling you to gather yourself.Â
âReplay the song!â Ren yells, and Satoru does as the child asks. Ren will be getting out of the car soon enough so Satoru doesnât mind listening to the song a couple more times.Â
âHeâs going to be fine.â Satoru tells you, knowing that Ren is too busy listening to his song to hear what Satoru has to say.
âHeâs growing up too fast.â You say, and Satoru pouts. Bringing that up makes him want to cry too but he canât. Satoruâs already missed so much, and heâs going to miss more. But itâs fine. Ren is going to be fine, and heâs excited to go to school.Â
âWeâre here.â Satoru turns off the radio, handing you his handkerchief so you can clean your face. You have to control yourself for at least ten minutes, then you can cry all you want. Ren takes off his seatbelt before his face presses against the car window, looking at the surroundings.Â
âItâs big.â Ren comments which earns a chuckle from the both of you. Your house is almost as big, you have no idea why heâs shocked. You take one final deep breath before opening your car door. You can hold back the tears.Â
âAlright, letâs go. Weâre going to be late.â You say, and Satoru fights back a smile. At least youâre putting up a strong fort. Â
You get Ren out of the car, and before you begin the walk to the entrance, you take a couple of photos of the child. Youâre finally able to do it without crying, so you take as much as you can. Ren with a backpack nearly twice his size and a lunchbox as big as him. Heâs a Gojo, heâll be your height in no time.Â
âWere you crying?â Ren looks up at you, seeing how your eyes look puffy. The question makes you want to burst into tears again.Â
âWhy would I be?â You furrow your brows, trying to play it off. Thatâs good enough to deter Ren from questioning it any further. Ren takes your hand, and you squeeze it. âAre you excited, baby? Itâs a very big day.â
âI am.â Ren smiles at you, and you melt. Heâs going to have so much fun and learn new things, you shouldnât worry.Â
âStop!â Satoru nearly yells when youâre at the entrance. You both look back at him, confused why he suddenly yells. âLet me take a picture of the two of you.â
âYou donât have to yell like a maniac next time you want a picture.â You tell him, getting ready for a picture with Ren as Satoru takes his phone out. You signal Ren to come closer, and once heâs close enough, you both smile at Satoruâs phone.Â
âAnd for the record, I didnât yell like a maniac.â Satoru says after he takes enough pictures of the two of you. You think youâre done, but he hands the phone to you. He wants you to do the same for him and Ren, which you have no issue doing. You might be a little late but who cares? The first day of kindergarten isnât that big of a deal.Â
âAlright you two, say cheese.â You canât help but smile as you see your two boys share the same smile as they look at the camera. You hurry up, seeing that Ren is growing sick of taking photos. You donât take as many pictures as Satoru did, but itâs good enough, he doesnât need fifty variations of the same picture.Â
âAlright, letâs go.â You hand the phone back to Satoru, before you open the door to the school. Youâll admit, itâs nice knowing that you wonât be stuck within the halls this time around⊠You do feel slightly bad for your son, but heâll for sure enjoy it the first years.Â
âDo you need help with your backpack, buddy?â Satoru asks, seeing how the end of the backpack hits the childâs calves.
âI can handle it!â Ren claims, immediately getting defensive. Heâs in a space with kids his age, he has to look like a big boy. Satoru chuckles, claiming,
âI wonât take it from you, no need to answer like that.âÂ
You begin to get nervous as you approach the classroom. Leaving your baby alone in a classroom full of kids with a woman that you barely know is nerve wracking to say the least. Satoru looks fine, you should be more than fine as well.
âThis is the classroom.â Satoru announces when you nearly walk past it. The teacher waits outside with the door open and a warm welcoming smile on her face. This is it. Satoru takes over, telling his son, âAlright, Ren. Greet your teacher and go inside.â
âHow about a goodbye first?â You say, glaring back at Satoru for sending off your child without even getting a proper farewell. Ren waves at the two of you before walking into his classroom as if you didnât matter. You stick out your bottom lip as you look at Satoru, âHeâs a big boy now.â
âLetâs get out of here before the waterworks begin.â Satoru throws his arm over your shoulder and tries to guide you outside, awkwardly waving at Renâs teacher. Heâd stick around and talk to her some more (though the emails and meet-the-teacher night should be more than enough), but he has to make sure that you donât begin to cry outside of the classroom.Â
âHe doesnât even want to say goodbye to his mommy, what have we done?â You let out a cry, and Satoru tries his best to calm you down. Teachers are outside, waiting for their respective students, he doesnât need them staring at you.Â
âHow about I take you to breakfast?â Satoru asks, hoping that itâll take your mind off crying. Truthfully, he might begin to cry too. âHeard thereâs a good place around here, wonât you like to try it?â
âIâm not hungry.â You answer, your appetite completely gone from the lack of reaction from your son. Like father like son or whatever they say.Â
âA beautiful face like yours has to eat, câmon.â Satoru insists, and you sigh. Your stomach growls, giving it away. Youâre hungry and you canât deny it, but you donât want to eat. Satoru hears it, but he knows you wonât change your mind that easily. âFine, but Iâm still stopping to get something for myself.â
âYeah, whatever. Take me to get breakfast.â You roll your eyes. His plan has succeeded, right now youâre not crying because Ren entered his classroom without giving you a hug.Â
âItâs a date.â He says, which earns a weird look from you. It makes him feel nervous, and he scratches the back of his neck before asking, âIs it a date?â
âItâsâŠâ You begin but you stop yourself. Youâre not sure. Do you want to give him that slight bit of hope that you can get back together?Â
You clear your throat before telling him, âIâll decide after.â
I was thinking of when the five overblot (Riddle, Azul, Leona, Jamil and Vil) group were in STYX. So those five (separately) with a S/O GN!Yuu reader that immediately like tackled them into a hug as soon as they find them because they were extremely worried.
Idk I just thought it would be a bit angsty and cute đ
Thank youu!
AW<3
riddle rosehearts
he is so surprised when he sees you, you were the last person he was expecting when taken to this place! he doesn't have time to fully register it before you quickly run over and hug him tightly. riddle nervously stutters out your name and carefully puts his hands around you too. his eyes are still wide, and he's amazed that you're actually here- he can barely speak. truthfully, you had been on his mind since he had been taken to STYX. he can't believe you're right in front of him right now.
... after the initial shock he quickly snaps out of and realizes you completely went out of your way to come find him and the others here...! his face is painted with worry soon enough when he thinks about how risky for someone like you- to travel such ways he slightly scolds you. but he can't go on for long when he feels so relieved and happy to see you. he is just still stressed from everything that has been going on, you can't blame him, can you?
azul ashengrotto
azul didn't have time to think, he got a look at you and couldn't believe it like there's no way you're here and found them??? before he tries to call out - he wasn't expecting you to dash over and tackle him into a hug, he stumbles as he stands and lets out the longest sigh of relief and hugs you back tightly when he realizes it's really you. once he pulls away and looks at you more clearly, he feels such a sense of comfort after a hectic situation.
he sighs exasperated, he seems to be a bit needy for you since it's been forever since he's been near you (his words ok...) and this whole thing has been such a bothersome to him, really. he doesn't want to be away from you - and will absolutely detest it when he has to be pulled away. he is just waiting until things are resolved, or eventually, the chaos of events that happen in that chapter end.
leona kingscholar
leona is not quite used to having someone care for him so deeply in such a way, he wasn't expecting you to follow rook and epel along and find him. he'll huff, grumbling something under his breath before putting an arm around you and slightly rubbing your back and pulling you away from him so he can get a better look at you.
laughs dryly and tells you it was a real stupid idea for you to come all this way, but he'll give to you, he does think its admirable that you're willing to take some risks for him. him tell you that though is just his way of showing concern though, having something crazy happen to him is one thing but you?? no.
jamil viper
blinks slowly a few times processing that you're actually here and managed to find him and the others. he carefully places a hand on your head and pulls you slightly away after a moment and looks at you all over. he seems to be checking if you're okay after your little journey. despite everything that has happened to him, he seems more concerned over your well-being.
warns you a little because its reckless to come find him, something could've happened. as he does so he looks at you in slight worry and a furrowed brow as he rubs your arm slowly. still, he is relieved and feels eased seeing you again.
vil schoenheit
vil is slightly surprised but immediately wraps his arms around you comfortingly and asks you concerned if you're alright. his eyes show literally nothing but worry for you. and moves hair out of your face and sighing softly. he is a bit relieved to know you at least did something like this rook and epel... he knows rook is a bit chaotic, but he trusts him completely.
he seems to be reassuring of the situation currently and makes sure you don't bother worrying about him more and take care of yourself while you're here dealing with this now along him and the others. he cups your face and kisses you lightly on the head and actually thanks you for coming for him.
New Life, Old Problems (Leah Williamson x Reader)
Summary: You're trying to fully settle into your new life in London with your girlfriend. But when you get sick your past stops you from reaching out.
A/N: Finally managed to put something on paper again! By now I have about 6 stories (some multiple chapters) fully planned out in my head, but I struggle so much with actually writing any of it. Although it's getting a bit better, so I might become more active again.
This is the third part of the New Teammate series (Part 1, Part 2 Arsenal version). Although I think you should be fine to read this without reading the other parts first. Also this was definitely helped along by @holly-wallis, who reached out to tell me she was excited for the next part. So thank you again!
You thought you were doing well. You thought you had settled perfectly into your new life in London. You thought your relationship with Leah was going great. And all this was true, but only to a certain degree. Underneath the surface there were still many gaping wounds and you had a long way to go, which would take even longer because you refused to accept it, pretending like you were already at your destination.
How hard it really was for you to fully trust anyone, even Leah, to be vulnerable around her, became glaringly obvious when you got sick. As much as you wanted comfort, someone to take care of you, you couldnât allow it. The thought of trusting anyone so much when you were in a vulnerable state left you panicked.
However there was no hiding your sickness. Leah and you had plans that day and if you came up with some random excuse your girlfriend might end up checking on you since it was unlike you to cancel without a good reason. And sadly you couldnât think of a single good reason why you were unable to meet up with Leah. How were you supposed to do that when you could barely muster up the energy to go to the bathroom when needed?
In the end you decided that the truth was your best course of action. The defender had been exceptionally understanding about your situation and the multitude of struggles you still faced because of your past trauma. Honestly more understanding and patient than you were with yourself.
Despite being reasonably confident for a positive reaction you still were too much of a coward to call your girlfriend, opting to text her instead. âThis was better for your sore throat anywayâ, you reasoned with yourself.
R: Le, Iâm sorry I have to cancel today. I got sick.
L: Oh no! Are you okay? No wait, scratch that. How bad are you feeling? Is there anything I can do? Bring you something? Or do you want me to come over to keep you company? Iâd be happy to!
You looked at the sweet and caring words, Leahâs concern noticeable even from these few letters on your phone. The urge to text back and ask the Englishwoman to come over was huge. She would take good care of you; make you feel safe and loved. But you couldnât allow it because what ifâŠ
You couldnât even begin to describe what was hiding behind this what if. Maybe it was actually that, the big unknown, the completely unexpected. Never in your life would you have pictured what had gone done with Jimena and the whole team in Barcelona before it had actually happened. It had left you afraid to fully let your guard down because who knew when something unpredictable would happen again. And right now you were definitely too tired to keep up any guards, so your only option was to keep everyone far away from you.
R: Thatâs very sweet, but I canâtâŠIâm sorry.
With a rapidly beating heart you watched your phone, practically hypnotizing it, scared of your girlfriendâs reply. What if this was the final straw? As much as this possibility scared you, it was still more bearable than the alternative. At least it was an option you had already considered. You wouldnât be blindsided by it. Plus if there was one thing you had gotten good at in the course of your life it was dealing with pain and people leaving you.
L: I understand, babe. But if you need anything please text or call me. And Iâll be right there! Take care of yourself! Sending you some remote cuddles. Love you!
Your whole body relaxed as you read this response, even some tears of relief rolling down your cheeks.
R: Thanks, darling, I will. And thank you so much for being so understanding!! Love you too!
And with that you put your phone away, buried yourself under the covers and fell asleep relatively quickly. The cold medicine you had taken before texting Leah doing its part in helping you drowse off without too much of uncomfortable shuffling. Your last thought was that hopefully youâd already feel better when you woke up again.
Unfortunately the opposite was the case. You were startled awake by a violent coughing fit that just wouldnât stop. You thought that you could ride it out, but when it got to the point where you felt like you had to throw up from coughing so much, you forced your tired body out of bed and into the bathroom.
First you collapsed in front of the toilet, bending over the bowl, but once it became clear that you didnât actually have to throw up, you dragged yourself into the kitchen and filled a glass with water.
As long as you were drinking you were fine, but as soon as you put the glass down the scratchiness in your throat returned with full force, swiftly followed by another cough attack.
You resigned yourself to keep standing there, leaning heavily against the counter, too tired to support your body weight with only your legs, and drink glass after glass, until finally you could put the water down without instantly dissolving into a coughing fit.
At that point you were trembling because of the cold, your teeth chattering and every single bone of your body seemed to be hurting. Still you didnât immediately crawl back into bed, instead you gathered all of the supplies you might need to ride out this cold. You filled a bottle with water, grabbed some crackers and medicine and then you decided to also get a bowl to be on the safe side should you actually have to throw up at some point.
When you finally returned to bed, your breathing was labored and you all but fell into it. You quickly buried yourself under the blankets. It did little to warm you up though and you debated for a moment to get back up and get more blankets. The idea of moving again seemed entirely impossible however.
This time it took you a lot longer to fall asleep, silent tears streaming down your face because you felt so miserable. You yearned for some comfort, for Leahâs arms around you really, and you knew she would come in a heartbeat if you asked her. Still, you couldnât. You just couldnât!
The next time you woke up you felt even worse and it was at this point that you realized that you needed help. Somewhere in the hazy fog of fever and misery you managed to form this one rational thought. However you had little recollection of what happened next.
You remembered staring at Leahâs contact on your phone for a while, although you couldnât say if you did so for a few seconds or minutes or even hours. In the end you decided against calling her, instead opting to get an Uber. How you managed to get to the hospital was beyond you. You had some vague memories of a very concerned and helpful Uber driver who even walked you into the ER.
Another thing you recalled was sending Leah a message once you sat in the waiting room, slumped against the wall and shivering violently.
R: Fine. At hospital. But fine. Donât worry!!!!
You even remembered feeling very proud of this text; convinced that it would soothe all of your girlfriendâs concerns. If you would have been coherent enough to read Leahâs answer you would have known that it had the opposite effect. You did feel the constant buzzing of your phone from when the Englishwoman tried calling you over and over again, but it felt kind of nice against you aching body, so you didnât do anything about it.
---
âSheâs not answering her phone and she hasnât texted me back, Lia! What do I do!?!â
Your girlfriend was crying as she basically screamed these words at her best friend. When she had gotten your text and couldnât get a hold of you, she had called the Swiss woman for support and because the midfielder was known for being helpful in difficult situations.
âOkay Leah, first take a deep breathâŠâ Lia began with a soothing tone.
âAre you kidding me?! How do you expect me to breath when I donât know where my girlfriend, my very sick girlfriend might I add, is!â Leah yelled, feeling the need to punch something like some sort of clichĂ© from a movie. Or even better, the blonde would have loved to have a ball at her feet right now, that she could pund with all of her strength into the back of the net. And then maybe get into a slightly too aggressive scuffle with an opponent. Just something to get rid of this nervous energy.
âYou know where she is though, sheâs in the hospital, so theyâll be taking care of her,â Lia reasoned, continuing quickly before your girlfriend could blow up at her again, âAnd fine letâs skip the breathing. Hereâs what I think we should do; you pack some things your girl might need and Iâm going to call the hospitals closest to her. It shouldnât be too hard to figure out where she is. Then Iâll come pick you up and drive you over because you definitely shouldnât be driving.â
Despite her earlier refusal Leah let out a deep breath, relief smoothing out the edges of her panic, at least now they had a reasonable plan. This was exactly why she had called her best friend and once the Englishwoman was less preoccupied with her fear for you she would be thanking Lia profusely.
A little later the two footballers arrived at the hospital, Lia once again taking the lead and asking about you. There was a bit of a back and forth where the staff had to figure out if they could even give them any information about you.
It was a big test for your girlfriendâs brittle composure, every second that ticked by brought her one step closer to bursting into tears or unleashing her fury on everyone that got into a five meter radius of her.
Leah managed to keep it together however, not using the healthiest coping mechanisms. The Englishwoman kept pinching herself to let at least some of the overwhelming emotions trickle out of her.
Lia frowned when she noticed, but decided to keep her mouth shut. She didnât want to risk a full-blown outburst which might then keep them, or at least Leah, from seeing you even longer.
Finally they managed to find the right information and saw that Leah was in fact your emergency contact, something that the blonde had been telling them all along. If only they would have believed her then this wouldnât have taken so long!
Thankfully things went quickly after that. Leah was led to your room while Lia wasnât allowed to tag along. The Swiss woman promised that she would stay in the waiting room until your girlfriend had updated her, in case either Leah or you needed something.
Leah entered your room quietly, not wanting to disturb you even though with all the meds you had been given it was unlikely you would wake up anytime soon. Still she didnât want to take the risk. So the defender tiptoed into your room, coming to a sudden halt once she had a good view of you.
It filled your girlfriend with fear and pain to see you so sick. You were pale, even more so than usual, almost the same color as the bed sheets. There was a tube connected to your arm, most likely to replenish you with everything you needed. You were also hooked up to a monitor, and it was a small relief to Leah that everything on it looked and sounded normal. As far as she could tell at least. Most of her medical knowledge stemmed from watching doctor shows, so that probably wasnât the most reliable source.
After getting used to this sick, fragile version of you the blonde approached you, standing by your bedside. She looked down at you with teary eyes, gently stroking your cheek before smoothing out your tussled hair.
Your girlfriend craved more contact. She wanted to snuggle up next to you, wrap her arms around you and basically attach every centimeter of her body to yours. But Leah didnât know how you would feel about that. Not when you werenât awake to enforce your boundaries, not when you were in a vulnerable state which usually made you push people far away from you.
So with a sigh she pulled up a chair and sat down next to your bed, not even allowing herself to hold your hand. The England captain didnât want to risk making you uncomfortable even the tinie when you woke up.
It was about 30 minutes later that Leah suddenly remembered that Lia was still waiting for her. She rushed down to the waiting room, not wanting to leave you alone for a second longer than totally necessary.
âSheâs okay, I think. Or not too bad at least. So you can go home,â Leah explained, sounding very unsure. Everyone had told her that you would be okay, all the signs pointed to it, but she would only be able to believe it once you woke up and she could see for herself. And maybe not even then.
âThatâs good! I guess you want to go back now, but call me if you think of anything you need, yeah?â Lia replied, giving her friend a tight hug.
Leah nodded, before turning around and walking as fast as she could back to your room. She would have run, but had the distinct feeling that that wouldnât be appreciated by the hospital staff. And the Englishwoman didnât want to annoy anyone, not when she was aware that they were already breaking the rules for her by letting her stay with you way past visiting hours.
---
When you woke up you noticed with a pang of sadness that there was no warm body next to you. It wasnât like you and Leah stayed over at each otherâs place every day, but definitely more often than not. And lately every time you woke up alone you felt some dismay. Everything was just better when you got to start the day with your girlfriend.
The second thing you became aware of was that despite just waking up you still felt exhausted, drained was the better word really, and also somewhat hazy and achy. It was then that you remembered that you were sick and that you had this weird fever dream where you took an Uber to the hospital. If you would have had the energy for it you would have laughed at the absurdity of this.
However as you opened your eyes you realized with a silent âOhâ that it hadnât been a fever dream after all, you really were in the hospital. Panic bubbled up in you, but got quickly cut off before it could become overwhelming by your favorite voice speaking up, even if you didnât like how worried it sounded.
âBabe, are you awake? How are you feeling?â
You turned around, your lips turning into a smile when you laid your eyes on your girlfriend. She had gotten up from the chair she had presumably been sitting in, staring down at you intently. The Englishwomanâs eyes were trailing over your entire body, however not in the way they usually did, this felt more clinical, like she was attempting to spot anything that might be wrong.
âCould be worse,â you replied.
Leah gave you an unimpressed look. âBut it also could be better?â She double-checked and you nodded sheepishly.
âIs there anything I can do before I get the doctor?â Your girlfriend asked softly.
For some reason Leah was still standing a good fifty centimeters away from your bed, her arms hidden behind her back as if she had to stop herself from reaching out to you. If only she would! You longed for some comforting touches and maybe a good, reassuring hug from the blonde.
âGet me home?â You joked with a pleading look. You definitely wanted to get out of the hospital but you knew that it wasnât up to your girlfriend, and she would never do anything to endanger you.
âNo can do, sorry babe. Anything else?â Leah prodded, hoping you would ask her for a hug. She could barely contain herself from launching at you, but the fear of crossing your boundaries in such a difficult situation kept her back.
âMaybe a cuddle,â you mumbled so quietly and rapidly that Leah couldnât decipher what you were saying.
âWhat was that, babe? Sorry I didnât quite hear you,â Leah apologized, taking a step closer to you.
You locked your eyes with your girlfriendâs, letting all the love and concern shining in them wash over you and give you the strength to utter your request more loudly. There wasnât even a reason to feel weird about it, you knew that Leah wouldnât deny it, would most likely be happy to oblige.
âA cuddle?â
Within milliseconds your girlfriend closed the distance between the two of you, sat down on the edge of your bed and leaned down to gather you carefully in her arms. You both felt and heard the relieved sigh Leah let out when you were tucked into her arms.
It made you wonder why the blonde had kept her distance before, a certain guess at the forefront of your mind. And in the safety of your girlfriendâs arms you managed to ask about it without much over thinking or fuss.
âWhy did you sit all the way over there?â
All the way over there was a bit of an exaggeration, but also not really. Any sort of distance between your sick self and your girlfriend felt like way too much.
Leah tried to lean back a bit to look you in the eyes, but you held her firmly in place. You werenât ready to lose the comfort of her body on yours, even if she put now weight on you, not sure if it would negatively impact you in your current state.
âI didnât want you to be uncomfortable with me being too close when you woke up. I know allowing closeness when you arenât feeling too good is still very difficult for you,â Leah explained as if it was the most obvious thing in the world.
Even though your girlfriend showed you over and over again, day in and day out how amazing she was, the level of understanding and love behind this gesture still knocked you off your feet, or it would have if you were standing. It almost made you believe fully that you would always be safe with her. Almost. There was still a tiny bit of fear and insecurity left. It would probably take a good while longer until you got rid of that last remnant and you were once again very grateful for Leahâs patience.
âThank you so so much, love,â you whispered, pulling the blonde even closer to you.
âAlways,â Leah stated, not an ounce of doubt in her voice. She would always do whatever she could for you, to make you feel comfortable, loved and safe.
Your girlfriend allowed you to cuddle a bit longer until she gently extracted herself to get a doctor. At first you were somewhat annoyed at this, you would have preferred to stay wrapped up together for the rest of the night. However when the doctor announced after a quick exam that you would be allowed to go home later that day, you didnât mind so much anymore. The thought of going home made up for losing contact with your girlfriend temporarily.
Especially because she instantly stated that she would be staying with you when the doctor pointed out that you could only go home if there was someone around to supervise you. The way her voice sounded slightly offended that this wasnât abundantly clear to everyone made you smile fondly.
Thatâs how you found yourself sitting in Leahâs car that Lia had brought to the hospital early in the morning with help from Viv and Beth a few hours later. The short walk to the parking lot had tired you out and you couldnât wait to get to Leahâs apartment and crawl into her cozy bed.
You were half asleep when your girlfriend asked you, âHome?â Still you managed to nod and echo her words. âHome,â you confirmed.
In your drowsy and still a bit feverish state you hadnât realized that Leah was actually asking where you wanted to go, your apartment or hers. In your mind it was already decided that you would be going to the Englishwomanâs place. You loved her apartment more than yours at this point, everything about it homey and safe.
So when the blonde announced that you had arrived and you opened your eyes from the half-sleep you had been in a wave of unhappiness hit you as you took in your surroundings. You were parked in front of your own apartment building.
Tears flooded your eyes, which you tried to blink away hastily before Leah could spot them. It was stupid to be upset because of this, it wasnât like your apartment was bad or anything, you were just really craving the comfort of your girlfriendâs place. Where everything smelt and felt like Leah.
Of course the defender detected your distress instantly. She had been watching you like a hawk ever since she had gotten to the hospital last night.
âWhatâs wrong, babe? Does something hurt? Should we go back to the hospital?â She asked you in rapid succession, trying unsuccessfully to keep her voice calm and steady.
You shook your head, mumbling that it was nothing. To emphasize this point you reached for your seatbelt, determined to get out of the car and into your apartment without any more of a hassle. Everything was fine. It didnât matter that you had wanted to go to Leahâs home. Everywhere was better than the hospital anyway.
Leah didnât give up so easily though. She put her hand on yours lightly, not taking a hold of it however, leaving you the option to pull it back if you wanted to. You didnât, just this small contact made you feel better instantly.
âPlease tell me whatâs bothering you,â your girlfriend begged, her eyes looking suspiciously wet.
âItâs stupid,â you waved Leah off.
âPlease,â Leah asked again, demolishing the last of your resolve to keep this to yourself.
âI really wanted to go to your place,â you explained, rushing to add, âBut it doesnât matter. Letâs just go inside now.â
Again you tried to make an attempt to leave the car, and again Leah stopped you with a gentle touch.
âWe can still go over to my place if you prefer,â she offered, already turning her car back on.
âNo, thatâs not necessary. Iâm just being silly,â you argued, but Leah just reached over to buckle you back in and pulled out of the parking space.
You didnât have it in you to continue arguing. Plus you were too happy at the prospect of getting to go to your girlfriendâs place after all. So you just leant your head against the car window, letting your eyes flutter shut again.
âI thought you said you wanted to go home,â Leah said before you could fully fall asleep.
âI did, but I meant your place,â you answered tiredly.
âOh,â your girlfriend exclaimed, her voice heavy with emotion. The idea of you thinking of her apartment as your home meant a lot to Leah. Every once in a while she couldnât help but worry if she was doing enough to help you move on, to be the best girlfriend possible, to make you feel loved and safe. So this undeniable confirmation that she had been succeeding in all of these aspects meant the world to your girlfriend.
When there was no more reaction from you after this, Leah glanced over, smiling when she saw you sleeping soundly. You looked so young and open and vulnerable when you slept. Leah cherished the fact that you were comfortable being like this around her, that wouldnât have been possible a few months ago.
You thought that telling Jason about your pregnancy would be the trigger that would set your life into a downward spiral. That everything would be different once it was done with. You would be different, he would be different, and the world would be different too. However, the days that followed could not have been any more normal.
Although your mind was still clouded with anxious pregnancy thoughts, your days went on as usual. You woke up early, exercised and went to work, just to come back home hours later to do whatever it was you got on your mind that night before going straight to bed. The only indications of your condition were the looming thoughts and the excessive tiredness you carried everywhere with you.
It was like the world around you didnât get the memo your whole life was about to be totally different just a few months from now..
And the world didnât have to. It didnât care that Yn Sn was pregnant. It would continue spinning around, circling the sun, like it always did. Day by day, minute by minute, like nothing had changed. And in the great scheme of things, nothing had. You did. You were the one who had changed. You were different, or at least you would become. Good or bad, nothing was gonna be like before. You would keep changing as the world would always be the same.
In the great scheme of things, the world didnât revolve around you. Your life wasnât a linear movie plot, troubleless and predictable. It was proving to you right then and there that it wouldnât hold your hand and give you a rulebook on how to proceed with every little thing. You were on your own to figure out this journey. It was now about you. And him.
At first, you only noticed the small differences. You were tired, more than usual. It seemed like every move you used to make swiftly was now heavy and took you double the effort to complete. Two days after your talk, Jason went back to the clinic to pick up the full test results, and had it delivered to you at your door. You didnât invite him to stay, nor did he ask you to enter, and you opened the envelope to find out you were about five to six weeks pregnant by yourself. It meant the baby was now growing faster and faster, and providing all that extra energy was what had been draining you off yours.
Your trips to the toilet became more frequent, even if your water intake had remained the same. That had raised one or two eyebrows at work, but considering the amount of things you were all working on, no one had given those bathroom runs their full attention. However, your new breast size didnât go as unnoticed. In fact, it became a big topic of discussion between your coworkers, where each person tried to bet which surgeon had given you a cup size that was almost double of what yours originally was.
Then, there was also him. Every single day since youâd broken the news, Jason woke you up with a good morning text. Heâd ask if you had slept well, if you were alright, and if you had gotten sick at any point the day before or if you craved or wanted anything. He knew it was about time you got morning sickness and cravings, and he wanted to do what was best to keep you and his baby in perfect condition.
He seemed to care about this baby a lot, even this soon. Not even the most positive scenario you couldâve come up with had you imagining heâd be this sweet, this nice. Actually caring and attentive. Yet, here you were, and he made sure to always tend to your needs whenever he was needed. But he wasnât needed that often. Except for the good morning texts and your subsequent daily health report, you two didnât talk much.
Nessie, your best friend, was also really into the idea of this baby. Daily, sheâd flood your messages with baby videos and pics, pregnancy tips and motherhood articles. She might as well be the mother of this child, because she was certainly more excited than its real one. She had even told her own mother about it, letting her know she was going to be an âauntieâ and how she should bring gifts the next time she comes over to visit.
You havenât even considered telling your parents about it yet, brushing the thoughts away every time theyâd come up in your mind. In fact, most thoughts about your pregnancy were brushed aside, as you were still not ready to fully accept this new reality of yours.Â
Thus, a couple of weeks went by since youâd last seen Jason. As normal as theyâve ever been. Then, it was a Thursday night. One where you found yourself spread on your sofa, craving sweets and a large pizza, with your best friend sat on your living room floor, rambling excitedly about something you werenât paying much attention to.
â... and, even though everyone knows he has a fucking girlfriend, he was at the party with not only one, but two other girls. Heâs such an asshole!â Nessie spoke about whatever season of a TV show she was rewatching. But your mind couldnât have been any further.
You stared at your phone screen, reading and rereading, again and again, the last messages in your chat with Jason. He had just asked about your day, if you felt sick or anything, and instead of giving him your usual and very formal reply, you went on and on about your sudden desire for dessert pizza. You didnât know what had gotten into you, but your fingers were faster than your conscience and without a proper thought, the message was sent.
. 8:24 PM
hey, how are you feeling?
. in desperate need of a good chocolate pizza . id kill for it . not really kill for it . yk...
đ€Ł
You hoped you could be faster and delete it before he got a hold of his phone again, but the laughing emoji told you you were too late for that. Now, you laid there, overthinking your text when there was nothing you could do about it. Much like your pregnancy. Dumbass.
âYn, are you even listening?â your friend called.
âY-yeah. It was a really bad season, that one.â Without even moving to look in her direction, you gave her a half assed reply.Â
âYn⊠What are you talking about?â she asked you, confused.
âArenât we talking about the Bachelor?â you tried to confirm, now moving on your side to see her eye to eye. However, her incredulous face told you youâd completely missed the topic. Offering her an apologetic smile, she rolled her eyes at you and threw you a pillow.
âNo! I was talking about Dick Grayson?â She raised an eyebrow and you looked at her with your brows furrowed. âGothamâs resident playboy? The one that was seeing like three different girls at the same time? Gosh you were such a killjoy, all I wanted to do was gossip. It doesnât hurt anybody and itâs fun.â
You let out a laugh at your friendâs dramatics, telling her to keep going with her story, promising to actually pay attention to it this time.
âOkay, he was seeing this girl officially. I think her name is Barbara. Red head, tall, pretty as fuck. Okay. However, he was supposedly with not only one, but two side pieces. Like, for real, such a fuck boy.â
âEw,â you engaged. âNot even a fuck boy, an asshole. What does his girlfriend think about this?â
âI donât know.â She threw her hands in the air. âI donât even think she knows about all of this, if Iâm being honest. And if she knows sâŠ.â Ding dong. Your friendâs story was cut short by the sound of your doorbell reverberating through your living room. âAre you expecting somebody?â she asked. You shook your head.
Sitting up, you waited for the doorbell to ring one more time, just to be sure there was really someone at your door. You looked between it and your friend, suddenly worried about who the hell would be bothering you at this hour of the night. Standing up, you walked straight to the door with care. Silent steps taking you to the peeping hole.
Looking through it, a tall, sasquatch like frame youâd grown to recognize rather easily, stood on the other side. In his hands, you caught a glimpse of a few plastic bags, his helmet, and a cardboard box.
âH-hey,â you greeted him awkwardly when you opened the door, a bit surprised to see him there.
âHi. Heard you wanted some pizza.â He winked, lifting up what you now could identify as two cardboard boxes exhaling the greasy smell of your desired meal.
âYou didnât have to,â you said, sliding a hand through your hair. It was just a silly text, you thought, but perhaps it wasnât for him.
Shrugging, he dismissed your words. âI was craving some junk food too, anyway. And I hadnât seen you in a while soâŠâ
You bought me pizza? And brought it to my door?
âOh my god, where are my manners? Please, come in. Weâre in the living room,â you told him, freeing your spot to allow him to enter your apartment for the first time
âWe?â he asked, and you didnât have to turn around to know he was lifting a brow at you.
âMe and my friend, Nessie,â you said, showing him to the other girl sitting on the floor by the center table. By now, she had a clearly amused smile on her face, and her eyes sparkled with an excitement that had annoyed you for some reason. âJason, this is Nessie. Nessie, this is Jason,â you introduced them.
Jason extended his larger hand for her to shake, and she did it way too excitedly. âOh my, Iâm finally meeting your baby daddy,â she sang. You kicked her right at the ribs.
âNice to meet you too,â Jason said through a breathy laugh. âAlthough I have to say Iâm still not used to being called baby daddy. I mean, youâre just the second person to tell me that, but itâs still weird.â
âTell me about it,â you wondered out loud, but soon your mind clicked to the fact someone else had called him that when, as far as you knew, only he, you and Nessie knew about your pregnancy.
âSo⊠What did you bring us?â Nessie immediately asked, like the hungry dog she had been all night, scanning through the bags and the pizza boxes he had placed on the center table and pulling you away from your own head..
âOh, I got you your dessert pizza, like you asked. And I also got a pepperoni one, but I wasnât sure if you would like it,â he explained, messing up his hair.
âI didnât ask for it,â you blankly stated.. It wasnât a lie. You didnât actually ask for it, you just hinted you were highly interested in one. But having him show up with the object of your cravings at your door not even an hour later had you feeling a bit uneasy, uncomfortable with the fact you kind of made him do it. He stared at you wide eyed, blinking repeatedly, unsure how to proceed.
âY-yeah. But, I-I just thought I would do you this favor. A-and it had been a while since we talked andâŠâ
âAnd we are very thankful for it!â your friend cut him off, gladly pushing the awkwardness away. âWe were starving cuz this one right here only had salad in her fridge.â
âIâm sorry if I havenât had the energy to go grocery shopping.â You stuck your tongue out.
âI wouldnât mind doing it for you, if you want it,â Jason offered, sitting down on the floor beside Nessie.
âIâll get it done,â you said, following his move. âEventually.â
Silently, you each decided to focus on all the food ahead of you. You couldnât lie, you werenât sort of enjoying all of this. Not only had he brought you pizza, and the dessert pizza youâd been craving, but he had brought you mini burgers from a place downtown you loved and even a slice of cheesecake.
âHave you checked any of the providers I sent you?â Jason asked, breaking the comfortable silence you had just settled in.
For the last few days, he had sent you tons of options for prenatal providers and doctors, something you knew you shouldâve been more attentive to, but that you were avoiding like everything else regarding this pregnancy. You knew that, by this point, you shouldâve already scheduled an appointment with a doctor, chosen a provider, and started looking into birthing options and other pregnancy needs. But you just couldnât get your head into it.
Jason knew you were still not sure about this. The mention of the pregnancy or the baby clearly makes you anxious and uncomfortable. He wanted to take things slow, at your pace, but there were things you couldnât really postpone, and prenatal checkups were one of them. So, he kept sending you options, just to see if youâd ever reply to any of them, but they always went unanswered. It wasnât his intention to come to your house to talk about it, in specific, but he had to bring it up at some point.
When he arrived home from your apartment the other night, he immediately called his brother. Dick would know what to do, right? Heâs the one with plenty of female experience. Still, he never made the silly mistake of getting one of them pregnant.
âThatâs rough, buddy,â was all that he managed to say through the phone. Very helpful indeed. However, he did leave you with one single useful piece of advice: you should find a doctor.
Thus, he proceeded with his research. It felt like he had seen three thousand different doctorâs names, and a plenty of options of healthcare providers. Neither one of them sounded cheap, but it was a necessary expense if he wanted to make sure everything was going to be alright.
And you knew that too. It wasnât as if you hadnât checked any of the options. It was just so overwhelming. Every link for a website he had sent was filled with words and expressions youâd never even heard of, leaving you more confused about pregnancies than youâd been before. It was honestly so stressful that you had started to purposefully ignore it.
âI havenât had the time,â you finally replied, picking out the pepperoni slices off your pizza, pilling them up on the side to eat them all at once. You heard him sighing deeply, and you could feel the annoyance by the way his shoulders trembled. You knew his patience had a limit, and heâd been so sweet and kind to you thus far that simply checking out the options was the least you couldâve done, and yet you didnât even manage to do that. âItâs⊠a lot.â
Looking over at him, you observed him with his eyes glued to his pizza slice. You wanted to read his mind, to know what was going through his head at this moment. Was he mad at you? At your seemingly incompetence to do one simple thing? Gosh. You felt the anxious rumbling at your stomach, the same one from weeks ago, and you wanted to curl down and cry.
Why were you like this? What has gotten into you?
âI have an aunt who is an ob/gyn,â Nessie meddled in. âSheâs pretty busy these days, but I could try and ask her to see you. If you want.â
Expectantly, Jason watched as you took your time to think. It was a good option, really. If she was busy, it could only mean she was a good doctor, right? And she was in Nessie's family.
âYeah,â you agreed. A sigh of relief coming from the boy beside you. âI think it would be fine.â
âGreat,â she celebrated. Standing up, she grabbed the empty cardboard box and walked to the kitchen. âIâll call her tomorrow.â
Left alone with Jason for the first time tonight, you returned your attention to your half eaten pizza slice, desperate to focus on anything other than him, but turns out your brain had other plans. It constantly thought of him. He was right beside you, and thatâs okay, but you could be occupying your mind with something else.
He too played around with his food, with his hands holding on to an energy drink heâd popped out of one of his bags. You caught a glimpse of the slight movement he did when he tried to offer you some of that same beverage, but he quickly realized perhaps it wasnât good for the baby.
His veiny forearms were just inches from yours, making the hairs on your body rise up from this almost contact. It was like your body knew he was right there and tried to reach with anything it could get closer to him. You would be lying if you said you didnât miss his touch. Not in a sexual way, like youâd been, shamefully, at the studio the other day. You missed his bear-like embrace that swept all worry away, that comforted you and helped you relax among so much stress and anxiety.
âI can pick you up. Take you to the doctor by car,â he offered, but something inside you told you he would accept your refusal as a possible response.
âThank you, Iâd love it,â you thanked, searching for his icy blue orbs. You could feel his fingers against yours, rubbing against your skin and sending a shiver up your spine. âAnd Jason, Iâm sorry for what I said earlier, about the pizza thing. Iâm just not used to all of this yet.â
âItâs fine, Yn,â he said, finding your eyes with a beaming smile next to his. âWeâll figure things out, eventually.â
Turns out Nessieâs aunt really was busy. Not just busy, but booked and âfamousâ. If you were to go by the sheer prices attached to her services, she was the Steve Jobs of obstetricians/gynecologists. It got you worried at first, because you werenât sure your insurance would cover such costs, but Jason told you to not think about it, She managed to fit you, god knows how, in an appointment another two weeks later. But you couldnât complain, because if you weren't âfamilyâ, youâd get to your first appointment with a baby already in your arms.
Every book youâd read, many of them being Jasonâs recommendations, told you your first appointment should be scheduled between eight to twelve weeks, and as far as you could tell, you would be just around at your appointment.Â
The two weeks went by swiftly, and soon, it was the day of your first prenatal check up.Â
You were at work all day, as usual. Your morning had been chaotic, with the beginning stages of preparations for the upcoming spring issue keeping everyone on the edge. However, thankfully, the afternoon treated you all more kindly. Although your feet still ached from all the running around youâd already done, you still roamed around collecting papers, portfolios and coffee cups for your boss.
Pushing the massive glass door open with your shoulder, you entered Sandraâs office with her sample book in hand. The clock approached your leaving time, today a few hours earlier than normal due to âmedicalâ reasons. Not a full lie, but a lie nonetheless. Those kept on repeating, and for the looks of it, they wouldnât stop any time soon.
You just werenât ready to tell anyone else yet. Perhaps it wasnât the right moment, as it was still too early. Perhaps it was you not wanting to accept reality. The more people knew about it, the more real it would become. And you knew very well it wasnât something you were ready to face, even though at this point you had no escape route left.
âYm, before you leave, just let Ibra know weâll be dropping by tomorrow to decide on the new photoshoot details,â your boss requested, not lifting her eyes off the papers on her desk.
âI already called him earlier, he sent you the models for you to check beforehand,â you informed, placing the large portfolio before her table. After rambling out your words, an involuntary sigh came out of you, a sign of your bodyâs exhaustion after a long day. âWeâll also get the Gucci sets by tomorrow, like expected.â
âGood,â was all you heard in response, and knowing her well, you took it as a sign to leave her to her work. Turning on your heel, you walked back to the door before her voice stopped you right at your tracks. âYn, are you alright?â
Surprised by her question, one youâd never heard come from her directed at you, your head snapped back towards her direction. âI-Iâm fine. Itâs just been a long day,â you explained.
âHmm,â she hummed, removing her designer glasses from her perfectly sculpted nose. âHave you been drinking a lot of water?â
âYes?â you sort of asked, growing confused.
âGood, itâs important to keep hydrated during your pregnancy.â
You swallowed dry. Your eyes popped from its sockets, and you swore your breathing had stopped. âSandra, you must be mistaken.â
âAm I?ïżœïżœ she simply asked, raising an eyebrow before returning her gaze to her notes. Opening your mouth, you tried to answer something, anything, but no proper sentence seemed to be formed in reply, as your brain was caught completely off guard by her knowledge of your secret. âI donât know how long you planned on hiding it, nor why, but you were silly to think I wouldnât notice. You seem to take longer to finish a simple task, you avoided salmon at lunch and said it had a smell, and your size has increased. You forgot I have a 14-month-old at home and a five year old daughter, I know the signs when I see it. Congratulations, from what I know of you, youâre gonna be a great mother. Just make sure to find your substitute at least a month before your due date so they have the time to properly learn the job till youâre gone.â
Staring at your reflection on the glass walls your eyes stop at your stomach. Are you already showing enough? Is she the only person to notice? Of course you didnât pick the best outfit to hide it today. Your clothes barely fit you anymore, so you had to rely on your dresses, the small collection you owned, to be able to build an outfit. And certainly, the ribbed fabric of the one you wore today didnât hide any of your curves, no matter how tiny they were.
You stood there, still, unmoving, flabbergasted. If Sandra was capable of so easily finding out your secret, it would be in no time till others could do the same. It was a secret with days counted anyways, you wouldnât be able to hide it forever even if you wanted to.
âThatâs all,â you heard her say, breaking you from your sudden malfunction and getting back to operating mode. You fled her room faster than you ever remember doing, and sank on your chair with the weight of the world weighing you down. Your hands shook, sweating cold, and your heart beat a bit faster. With deep breaths, you tried to keep yourself under control.
âYn,â you heard someone call, making you jump slightly on your seat. Looking up at the source of the voice, you found the raven haired boy now known as your baby daddy. In your office, right in front of you.
âJason, what are you doing here?â you scream-whispered from behind your desk. He looked at you confused, as if youâd forgotten your plans for today.
âThey let me in when I told them I was here to pick you up,â he explained. âThe appointment, remember?â
Standing up hurriedly, you shoved your phone, your planner and the rest of your stuff in the designer bag youâd gotten off the samples given to the magazine. Fleeing your desk, you looked around to see if any of the other secretaries were anywhere close, grabbed Jasonâs hand and pulled him with you out of your workplace. âYou were supposed to call me when you arrived,â you scolded, pushing open the door.
âSorry, you just werenât picking up your phone,â he stated. Of course I wasn't, I was working.Â
Dragging him to the elevator, you successfully managed to push him inside before you entered and watched the door slowly sliding closed without having stumbled into any of your coworkers. Sighing in relief, you allowed your head to rest on the metallic wall. A small win for today. You were taking any victories at this point.
âWho are we running from?â You felt Jasonâs breath on your ear, making you jump again. His soft giggle let you know that he found that entertaining. Letâs hope heâd enjoy your elbow to his ribs. âOuch, Iâm sorry.â
âIâm not running from anyone,â you said, crossing your arms on your chest. âI just donât want to start any gossip in the office. These ladies do like to talk about other peopleâs lives.â
âWerenât you and Nessie doing just that the other night?â he teased.
âThatâs different.â
âHow?â he gave you a sly smirk.
âIt was not about my life,â you argued, offering him a smirk in return.
Jason shook his head, leaning on the wall right beside you, close enough that your shoulders touched. But different to the first time you felt him this close, you were not nervous or about to cut his head off. You were actually enjoying his presence. What an era to be alive.
âYou look beautiful today,â he complimented you out of nowhere, bumping your shoulder with his playfully.
âYou donât look half as bad,â you replied, and watched both your smiles on the crooked reflection of the elevator door.
It wasnât long till you arrived at the clinic, but it was enough time for you to fall asleep. Shortly after entering the car, when he was already cutting through other vehicles to avoid the traffic, Jason noticed your head hanging to the side, and even if he tried to fix it back in place, it would instantly fall once again.
He remembered how exhausting your job looked that couple of hours he witnessed by himself, and now must not have been different. Especially considering your pregnancy and the tiredness heâd had been reading about. So he let you nap quietly on your seat, making sure to watch out for your neck as much as he could while handling the road.
You were still groggy when you stepped into the white halls, needing guidance to find your way around. With his hand on your lower back, he took you to the reception, where a bored looking receptionist typed something away for what seemed like an eternity.
âHi,â you greeted sweetly, a tone he wasnât much used to hearing from you. âI have an appointment with Doctor Mikaelson.â
âWhat is your name?â asked the receptionist with an annoying nasal voice that made Jason want to punch her for no other reason than it was just annoying.
âYn Sn. Itâs spelledâŠâ you continued, giving out every bit of information the woman needed. And it was a lot. As your first visit, there was a lot to be filled, and he stood to the side, watching as you answered all of her questions with a patience he hadnât seen in many people.
There was something in the way you talked to the receptionist, with such poise and connectedness, that had Jason hooked. Leaning his elbow on the tall desk, and resting his cheek in his palm, he watched on as you continued to reply to each and every single question. The strong lighting did not ruin your look in the slightest, and in fact, Jason thought it somehow made you look prettier, something he believed no one else could manage.
The faint winds from the air conditioning blew on your hair, giving you your own magazine photoshoot ambiance. You did not stutter, nor did you take long to answer, all the words flowing from your lips even though he paid no mind to any of them. It wasnât like the angry girl he used to meet at the gym, nor the one that showed up upset at his doorstep, or even the quiet one you would become around him recently. And he liked to think this was the real one, or at least a better glimpse at it than youâd ever let him see.
âJason?â he heard you calling, and it was his turn to jump from his place. Giving you an awkward âyeahâ, he let you repeat whatever it was you had said. âShe said Iâll need to take some tests. Would you keep my bag, please?â
âSure,â he said, fixing his posture and grabbing the rather heavy bag off your hands. âIâll be sitting right here when you come back.
You nodded, offering him an actual smile, before walking off beside a nurse. He found a seat not too far from where you two were just standing, and watched as you moved away, swaying your hips side to side. Taking his eyes off your ass, he tried to focus on something else, catching a glimpse of the tiny pump on your belly. It wasnât too noticeable yet, and might as well be some bloating from a heavy meal, but heâd wanted to think it was his baby right there, showing itâs first signs of life just under your care.
Heâd been getting excited. Too excited, perhaps, for a baby that wasnât even planned. But he couldnât help it. When the initial fear was gone, all he could think about was the baby. His baby. He was going to have a baby.Â
All his life, he thought that if there was someone in his family that would have a baby by accident, besides his dad, it was his older brother. Dick was a dick, thought with his dick, and had given it to half the female population of Gotham. When he told him about it, he could not stop laughing, and Jason did think of punching him in the face. Repeatedly. But it was him that made the fear go away at first. Not by taking him out for a drink, which he still did, but by making him see the good in it.
âItâs a baby!â, he said. âYou love babies, and you always wanted one.â
It was a baby, it was sort of your dream, and it was with the girl he had a crush on. It could be worse. Sure, there are a lot of changes of plans that heâd have to take from now on, but the good sides were much greater.
His father wasnât very happy when he told him, though. But Dick, again, came to the rescue. âJason is smart. Heâs always been the level headed one⊠when he wants it. Heâll figure things out.â And soon, old man Wayne was on board with the new baby. So on board that he had already planned on rebuilding his suite at Gotham Memorial, just for your delivery. Jason had to tell him to calm down a little, you didnât even know his dad was a millionaire yet.
You took quite long to return. Sitting back down besides him a good forty minutes later, pulling the sleeves of your dress over your hands to protect them from the cold. He handed you your bag back, and you two sat in silence for almost half an hour till the nurse called your name again. This time, with a âthe doctor is waitingâ along.
âNervous?â Jason asked, as you two walked side by side to the doctorâs room.
âI was worse,â you replied, giving him a smile he returned gladly. âIt wonât get that bad again. I think.â
Different from the waiting room, the doctorâs office was cream colored and the yellow lights much more comfortable. There were books decorating almost every surface, with toys and teddy bears everywhere too. It gave out a sense of comfort you so desperately wanted to find in your pregnancy. Given how everything, all your feelings, had been thus far, it was great that something could actually give you comfort.
âYou must be Vanessaâs friend, right?â Doctor Mikaelson said, extending her hand for you to shake. You only nodded, still not used to going on doctors appointments on your own. What were you even going to say?. âAnd is this your boyfriend?â she asked, and your eyes immediately popped off their sockets.
âNo,â you quickly replied. âHeâs not⊠my boyfriend.â
Thankfully, she did not ask for any further explanation. âYou can call me Rebecca from now on. Today weâre going to talk a lot, thereâs a lot I want to learn about you, so itâs going to be a long appointment. Itâs your first visit, am I right?â she questioned, and you just nodded your answer. âAny medical history I should know about? From you and other family members.â
Pulling her chair closer to the expensive looking computer, she prepared to type in the answers to her inquisitions. âNo, no. Iâm clean. Healthy. No medical history I can remember in my family either. I mean, my dad does have high blood pressure, but thatâs it,â you explained, and looking at the moose sat beside you, you expected his answer. âJason?â
âErmâŠâ he struggled. âIâm adopted.â
Surprised, your head angled to the side while your eyes were now glued to him, anticipating the rest of his story.
âDo you know anything about your biological parents?â the doctor asked, but he shook his head, ending the subject you so wanted to hear more about.
The appointment went on like this for a while. Questions were made, by both sides, answers were given. Some more explaining on Rebeccaâs behalf, and soon the minutes went by swiftly, without you even noticing. It was now time for the ultrasound, as she explained, and while fishing for the items sheâd need to perform the exam, you were left by yourselves for a short while.
Standing up, you awkwardly play with your feet as you wait for the doctorâs return. So far, your head was banging with so much information it had received in not much time, and the exhaustion from the full day was starting to catch up to you. Your mind was getting dizzy, and you mentally begged for it to be over soon and for you to be ready to go to bed. But the next step of your visit, and you couldnât deny it, had you rather excited.
You found your reflection on a tiny mirror. You looked tired, but you looked pretty for such exhaustion. The extra effort put this morning on your look certainly had an effect, hiding, even if a little, your fatigue. As it had been happening for the past few weeks, your eyes soon spotted your belly, and now the tiny roundness it was making.
Your hands hesitated a couple of times. It was as if doing it would burn them, like it was wrong. But they reached it, touched the skin over the warm fabric. Touched you bump. Your still hidden baby. It didnât look frightening then. Your hands didnât burn. You just felt the protuberance in your body, the perfect little curve it made, and thought about, how the hell, it was supposed to keep a baby. It looked small and cute now. Tiny in comparison to the size it would get. Much like some of the women you saw in the waiting room, blowing up at any moment. Bellies round and exuberant.
But yours paled in comparison. At least for now. Your baby wasnât ready to be announced to the world yet, and you preferred it like this. Kept just for the two of you for now. Your sweet little secret. Your sweet little love.
Jason thought you were stunning. Heâd been staring at you, feeling your skin, from the side, and each reaction you got of it amazed him. It was a simple act, a touch you certainly repeat, over and over, until the day your baby finally arrived. But he saw beauty in it, nonetheless. He watched your hesitance vanishing, and your comfort was slowly visible. He too wanted to feel it, touch it, but everything in its given time.
âWill you lay down please.â The doctor returned, and as you pulled your dress to free your stomach, she offered you a blanket to cover yourself with.Â
Soon, just your tiny bump was out, the lights were off, and Jason stood by your head. Both anxious to hear the sound many boasted about.
âItâs kinda hard to find it,â the doctor said. âItâs still really small.â
Jasonâs grip on your shoulder grew tighter as the time passed. He caressed the skin over the material of your dress to compensate for the pressure after whispering an apology to your ear. You didnât blame him, you too were anxious for it.
âHa-â the doctor sang. âHere it is. Look, this tiny thing. This is your baby.â
You didnât see anything. Just a dot. A tiny little stain on the screen where she pointed at. Yet, it nearly made you cry. There it was. Your baby. In its full tinyness. In its full âhey mommy, you donât notice but Iâm hereâ energy. You heard sniffing by your ear, and your head snapped to Jason quickly.Â
What, he mouthed, and you had to hold in your smile. What a crybaby. Cute, noted.
âAnd here,â she continued, messing with her station, adjusting levels and pressing buttons. â... is its heartbeat.â
The loud beating echoed through the room. Tudum. Tudum. Till your own had gotten faster. It was on for long, being turned off soon after four beats, but it would stick to you for the rest of the day. The little sounds your baby made. The single sign of its existence within you, sounding like music to your ears. Addictive, delicious to hear. Still in your head as you walked back to your apartment with Jason by your side.
Youâd walked up there in silence. Comfortable silence. The long waiting hours and the extensive appointment getting the best of both of your energy levels.
â9 weeks,â he suddenly said. âYouâre 9 weeks pregnant.â Joining your eyebrows, you looked at him. âThat means we fucked a whole night and went by baby free, but one quickie in a random room had us doomed. The seed is strong- Ouch!â
With a single swing of your bag, you aimed for Jasonâs head and hit your target precisely. He tried to dodge another move, but was hit by another swing before getting a hold of your weapon. Your laughter echoed through the small area, loud enough you were sure your downstairs neighbor could hear.
âShut up,â you shoved him with your shoulder. âIs all of this a joke to you?â
âNo, but that was funny,â his laughter joined yours.
Your hands struggled to enter the key on its lock, but soon your door was hanging open.
âDo you want to come in? Eat something?â you offered, still a bit skeptical of his prolonged company. He looked dead in your eye, a while that made you slightly uncomfortable. His icy blue stare makes your body shiver. Replying with a toothless smile, he shook his head.
âI better head home.â
âAre you sure?â you insisted. You didnât know why, but you kind of wanted his company tonight.
âYeah. Iâm sure youâre exhausted. And I want my bed too, so I better head home before itâs too late for me to drive. You donât want your baby losing its father this soon, do you?â he joked.
âIt would be a tragedy,â you joined in on the fun.
Walking slowly to you, he held your cheek to place a chaste kiss to your forehead. Offering another thin-lipped smile, he turned his back to you and headed for the elevator. âBye.â He waved.
âBye, Jay.â You returned the gesture. The sudden use of a nickname made his smile larger.
âYnie.â He gave you a wink, before disappearing behind the metal doors.
âSo⊠How was the appointment this week?â Nessie questioned, eyes scanning the cool toned garments hanging on tons and tons of clothing racks. It was now Saturday, and you two had gone out shopping, something you hadnât managed to put your head on for months, but that now managed to free it from any thoughts of your current state. Well, until now.
âIt went fine,â you simply stated, avoiding commenting any further.
âYou donât sound too excited.â She raised a brow at you.Â
Averting your gaze, you stopped to look through a rack full of coffee tone wool cardigans. The colorful sets of summer were now long gone, giving place to the browns, grays and blacks of the fall/winter seasons. Thin fabrics like silks and linen being traded for thicker, more weather-appropriate substitutes.
Sighing, you allowed your friendâs words to linger in the air for as long as you could. You didnât want to reply. There was nothing to reply. She knew pretty well your stance. âWhatâs there to be excited about?â you asked in return, and she gave you an upset look. âIâm having a baby with a guy I hooked up once. Sorry for not jumping around at the news.â
It was her turn to sigh, as you continued to roam around the store looking for anything cute for you to wear, since your clothes were now too small for your still not too visible but obviously growing bump. It was a struggle finding an outfit to go out today, having to make the most out of your summer dresses in the increasingly chilly days of September.
âI thought you were starting to like the idea,â she commented. Crossing her arms over the rack you were looking through and resting her chin on top of her hands, she forced you to stop avoiding her gaze.
âI was,â you started. âAnd then I wasnât. I donât know. Itâs like every hour I have a different opinion on it. But itâs never too happy, or excited about it. And most often than not I regret ever laying eyes on Jason in the first place. I really donât know what to think,â you swallowed a lump that started to form on your throat, and waited for the burning in your eyes to cease before continuing. âIâm scared, and anxious, and it seems like at every second something could happen to cause a turmoil again and I donât think I can take another punch to the guts from the universe.â
You took a deep breath. You werenât going to cry at the mall today. There were no pregnancy hormones, no random mood swings, that would ever allow you to do that in public. Then, the sudden touch of Nessieâs hand on your shoulder helped your breathing ease down.
âNothing will happen. Donât overthink it,â she cooed, tugging a loose strand of hair behind your ear. âAnd youâre having a baby! Thatâs all you need to be excited about. I know they are little energy suckers, crying loudly monsters, but theyâre also so cute and adorable. Like, so cute and adorable you could take a bite out of them. And their giggles, and babbles. Câmon, I remember hearing you talk about your nephew, and how much you loved and missed him. Youâre now going to have your own.â
Like a true best friend, Nessieâs words did manage to put a smile on your face. And she was right. You had focused so much on the down sides that youâd completely brushed off all the good ones and how much they could outweigh the others. The mention of your nephew and his baby sister reminded you of how much youâd loved them and how much it hurt to say goodbye to them every time you went back to college.
And you wanted kids. A family. It just happened to be an unfortunate timing.
âCâmon, letâs go.â Before you had the chance to ask where, she was dragging you out of the current store you were at and into another.Â
The racks of taller, bigger clothes were soon exchanged by tons of baby clothes, shelves of toys and items now in your line of view. The smell of the store was also more pleasing, exhaling the scent of lavender through itâs entire length. Pulling out a tiny baby onesie from a table right at the front of the store, Nessie nearly shoved it in your face before continuing her rant.Â
âLook at how cute this is. Canât you imagine your baby in it? Itâs so small and scary to think it can fit a human,â she joked, earning your giggle. It really was cute, and the picture of your baby in it made your tummy flutter. âAnd look at this one!â she nearly screamed, showing you a cute flowery knitted sweater. âIâm pretty sure my mom could make you tons of this. No shade to this store,â she lowered her tone as if anyone would hear. âBut itâd be a lot cheaper, and prettier. Did I tell you before she knits?â
One by one, Nessie continued to show you random clothes and toys she kept seeing around and that got her excited. A music toy had you two concentrated on for an embarrassing two minutes before you realized your ages were not appropriate to the toyâs recommendation. You two laughed aloud at the images you both pictured of you and your baby, your future with each and every one of these items in it. Suddenly, the idea didnât sound bad at all in your mind, and you actually found yourself getting excited about it for the first time.Â
At some point, even a worker had come to your side and started handing you things your baby would certainly need once it was here, and your brain got clouded with all the new information she had offered you in such a short amount of time. You were going out of the store with empty hands, but a long list of items you had to start sorting out.
A few minutes later and you were on your way out. That was when it caught your eyes. The fluffiest and cutest baby romper. It was golden brown and had bear ears and even a little fluffy tail, just like the ones youâd seen all over your socials from even before this state was an idea of your future.
Heading in its direction slowly, you took it from the rack, feeling the soft fabric in your hands. Your mind instantly being filled with images of your baby wearing it, not any unknown baby. Yours. Maybe by the age it was big enough to be strolling around in it, its cute little steps as you followed it around. Or still tiny so you would have to carry it around like a real teddy bear.
You felt your eyes watering. Your baby in it. Your baby strolling around. The cutest little legs and hands. Yours. Turning around to face your friend, you suddenly found yourself determined. âIâm taking this.â
It wasnât only the romper you took. You left the store with bags almost full to the brim. In them, you had a cute pumpkin onesie, already in the mood for halloween, plushies and a few toys that had you and your friend entertained, tiny baby gloves and socks, beanies and packages of diapers Nessie had insisted it was never too early to start stocking up on.Â
âBabies go through those like crazy,â she told you, and then you had a bag full of them in your hands heading back to your apartment. May your credit card deal with the cost of all this later.
It felt good. It sort of felt⊠right. If you were really going to keep this baby, youâd have to get stuff at some point too. Correct? You werenât softening to the idea, you were just being precautious.
But Nessie was right. Babies were adorable and you missed the ones in your life. Your nephew, and his little sister you mostly watched grow up through phone screens and instagram posts, were far away from you, living their lives despite your absence. You worked your whole life to get away from your parents power umbrella, and not only youâd not dare to return, but coming back with a baby was perhaps the worst thing you could do.
All the stress and work youâd gone through to get to Gotham couldnât just be thrown out your window. Not for you, not for your sister. Although it hurt them to see you leave, they were always in full support of your choice. Your manumission.
A family. You told Jason youâd never had one. It wasnât true. Although to your parents you were mere tokens of their âperfectâ job as âparentsâ, as society people, they were never family. Your sisters were. And even though it was in an odd way, you loved and cared for each other dearly throughout your entire life.
It pained you to see each one of them leave your household, one after the other, for completely different reasons. Until you were all alone. And then you had no family. No one to rely on. No one to care for you in your parents' perpetual absence. Until you managed to leave yourself, even if it took you a lot of compromise and convincing.
Arriving on your floor with your bags in hand, faces stamped with laughter and aching feet, you stopped in your tracks as one single detail was capable of ceasing your happiness.
In front of you stood your door, spread open. The lights inside were on, and the well known sound of a female voice, humming along to a muted tune and moving things around. There were only two people that had your apartment keys, and they never meant anything good when they were around.
Brushing the anxious thoughts aside for a couple of hours had worked for nothing, because the worst of your nightmares had just become a reality.
âTake the bags with you,â you turned to your friend, shoving the bags in your hands onto her chest. âPlease.â
âYn, are you alright?â Nessie asked. Worry eating her up from just one look at your frightened expression.
No, Iâm not fucking fine, you wanted to answer, but the words didnât come out of your mouth. Instead, all you did was lose your breathing pace, getting hectic by the second, and your mind went numb.
âYn, dear. Is that you?â you heard the ladylike voice of your mother calling from inside. Her steps soon too reached your ear, and her shadow approached the door behind you.
âPlease, Nessie,â you begged. âCan you take this to your apartment? Iâll pick it up once theyâre gone. They canât see it, they canât know Iâm pregâŠâ
âOh. Were you two out shopping?â your mother asked excitedly. In good motherly fashion, or at least that was what she always did, she hurried her way to your side, grabbing the bags and eyeing up their content. Her hawk-like eyes scanned through each item carefully. There was no privacy at the Snâs household, it wasnât about to change now.
âNessieâs cousin is pregnant,â You shoved the bags into your friendâs hands, away from your motherâs prying ones. âWe were getting her things, you know, for her baby shower. We mightâve gotten too excited though, wasnât it Nessie? We got too many things, but they were all so cute we couldnât just not get them!â
You offered her a fake smile, forcing Nessie to join along. It often surprised you how good you were at lying, how fast you could come up with a good story. But maybe all those years of practice served you some good. It all came down to telling the truth, but not all of it. Always hiding something, always leaving details behind.
âI love baby showers. It still pains me you werenât there for little Maceyâs one, Yn. You said you had finals, or something, and couldnât come. A shame really, your sister put so much thought into it for you to not be there. If only youâd gone to our local college, you couldâve taken just a few minutes of your day to be supportive of your family.â
âMom,â you hissed, earning an angry glare in return. âNot here, please. Letâs go inside.â
âFine,â she accepted, hips swaying as she followed you along. âWonât your friend want to have some tea with us?â
âNo,â you immediately cut her off. âShe has things to do. For work.â Throwing your friend an apologetic glance, you closed the door behind you, locking yourself into your own hell for god knows how long.
âWhat are you doing here?â you inquired once you reached your living room.
âWhat are those manners?â she replied annoyedly. âCheck your tone next time you ask me this, sweetie. It seems like youâre not pleased to have your parents around.â
âI-Iâm sorry, you two just caught me by surprise. Thatâs all,â you excused, stuttering the words that you had managed to get out. âWhereâs father?â
âIn your room.âÂ
Your heart stopped. What was he doing in your room? Why was he there? Why were you acting like you didnât know the answers to those questions? All your life, all your parents did was snoop around, trying to find each and every way they could keep a hold of you, of your life, of your likes. Of everything.
You didnât remember all you had hidden in your bedroom, and what was still hanging around, at an easy reach of his hand. But you couldnât deal with the risk of him finding something, anything, that might lead them on to your condition.Â
Rushing through the corridor that led to your bedroom, you stumbled on the larger body of your father as you reached your bedroom door.
âCareful, Yn,â your father told you raspily. âLooking for something?â
His tone carried a note, a warning. He was on to something. Like a shark, he smelled blood in your attitude, preparing to attack at any moment you let something slip.
âNothing,â you lied. âJust wanted to see you. I missed you.â You embraced your arms around his torso with difficulty, his round belly much bigger than yours and forbidding you from completing the embrace. He pushed you away not one second after you touched him, giving you a frown before heading back to the living space.
You held in your sigh, too scared he might catch on to your relief. Scanning your room quickly, you didnât find a thing out of place and any clue he was onto something. So, quietly, you return to their presence in the small kitchen.
Their voices were blurry as you washed their dishes on your sink. Theyâd make themselves feel at home, cooking and eating in your home without waiting for your presence nor caring to leave you something. Your mind was elsewhere. It was in the moment theyâd be gone. It was on you all alone again.
âYn,â your fatherâs voice thundered through the room, making your head snap back to him in an instant. âYour mother has been talking to you.â
Staring blankly at him, you faltered a reply. âIâm sorry, Iâm just a bit distracted.â
âWell, get your stuff together. Your mother is talking and you should listen. Here, Iâm finished with this plate.â
Keeping yourself from rolling your eyes, you dried your hands and walked in his direction, aiming to get the plate and move as quickly as you could. However, you werenât counting with your father, who didnât even dare to look at you to hand you his place, knocked on your bag that was standing right beside him on the table on the floor. Its content spilled on the wooden tiles, revealing keys, hair ties, your wallet and envelopes of paper.
You tried to be fast, you swore you did, but your mother was faster. Grabbing the envelope from the floor, she looked at you worriedly. âSweetie, have you been to the hospital?â
âNo. No, no. I havenât. Must be someone elseâs. Got mixed up in my stuff.â
âBut it has your name in it,â she said, already skimming through the pages. You place the plate back on the table, moving to grab it off her hands when her wide eyes disapproving stare told you she had found what youâd feared the most.
âLet me see it,â your father demanded. He took the papers from your motherâs hand with ease, as her strength had already vanished from her body. Her face was pale, and her eyes held a sorrow youâd only seen in her eyes once, and it was not in a good day.
âDaddy, donât,â you cried, but it was already too late.
The veins in his face pumped up blood like crazy, making his face turn into the deepest shade of red youâd ever seen in someone elseâs face. His eyes scanned the words in front of him rapidly, shifting from one side to the other, but always returning to the same spot at the top.
âGrab your things,â he spat out. âGrab your damned fucking things.â
Swallowing dry, his words fell from one ear to the other, not stopping at your brain to be processed in your thoughts. You were reactionless, staring blankly back at him.
âAre you deaf?â he nearly screamed, grabbing your arm with a strength you knew would leave a mark. âWho is it? Who is the father?â
âI-I,â you tried to speak, but any word that came out was stuttered. Your father shook you for an answer, like you do with a snack machine that is not working. âI donât know.â
âYOU DONâT KNOW?â This time he fully screamed. You felt a tear pool by the corner of your lip, and it was then you realized youâd already started to cry. âYou have been whoring yourself around to the point you donât know who the bastard is?â
âDaddy, I-IâŠâ
You felt your cheek burn. The image of his fingers now printed on your face. âIâm not your father. I did not raise a daughter to be a whore, to have a child out of wedlock after everything I have done to you. Youâre an ungrateful bitch if you ask me. Wife, here is the reason why she so desperately wanted to be away from her family. To be whore. To give herself out to men she doesnât even remember. Your daughter is a slut, and if that is the life she plans on living, then let her be on her own.â
His words hit you harder than his hand did. It pained you from within, tearing your heart apart. You sobbed by now, the tears making your vision blurry. He pushed you down the corridor and into your room.
âGet your things and get away from this house.â
You did as he said. The apartment wasnât yours, you didnât pay any of your bills. You spat on the plate you ate from, as they say. You had everything. Even if they tried to send you back, they still gave you everything you owned. And you were reckless enough to throw it all away.
Your hands trembled while you tried to fetch your luggage from the upper shelf of your closet. Your mother soon entered the room, and you hoped that for once she would stay on your side. That for once sheâd coddle you, say everything would be okay and she would fix everything. But she didnât. She didnât even look at you. Just grabbed your clothes from the closet and the stuff off your drawers and shoved them all into your luggage and a few bags sheâd found around.
âIâm so disappointed,â she whispered to herself before looking at you. âSo disappointed. We put our trust in you. I shouldâve never allowed you out of my sight in the first place.â
âMom,â you cried out, voice a trembling mess. âMom, I didnâtâŠâ
âSave it,â she cut you, handing you a backpack. âJust save it.â
You walked out of the room with tears filled eyes, meeting your father by the door, waiting to lead you out. When you approached him, he resumed his grip onto your arm. âToo late for tears now.â
Pulling you towards the elevator, he went in with you. You wanted to it all to be over already, but he wasnât keen on ending his torture.
âWhen this freak comes out of you, remember your parents. Remember those who have treated you right just for you to fuck them over. And I wish, oh how I wish it, that this kid treats you just as bad as you did us tonight. Get out of here, I donât want you one feet close to this building. I donât care where you go. You managed to find a guy's dick, youâll figure things out. Leave.â
Throwing you onto the streets, you fell straight to the floor. He spat in front of you, and walked back into the apartment building. He told the doorman something, probably to never let you in ever again. Struggling, you stood up, grabbed your stuff with trembling hands, and walked away.Â
You didnât know where to. You just knew you needed to go. As the tears blurred your sight, you walked into the darkness of the night. Aimless, senseless, and you hoped for, painless. But the aching on your heart told you youâd have a long night ahead. Alone, cold, pregnant, and fucked over.
Great. Just fucking great.
what once was mine | ch 4
Loki x Reader
Series Summary:Â When watching what once was supposed to be the rest of his life, in an empty room in the TVA, Loki sees someone he can't recognize; a girl who's all tenderness and loose smiles, and most importantly, she was smiling at him.
A/N:Â Not sure if I'm completely happy with how this chapter came out, but I hope you still enjoy it.
Masterlist | Read ch 3 here
Loki had watched through a checkered screen how you held onto his hand as if he were your whole world. He had watched the love in your eyes and the smile on your lips, all directed at him. And now, he watched as you, in flesh and bone right in front of him, walked away.
There was a foreign feeling consuming his heart the more you distanced yourself from him. It was akin to loss, but how could he lose something that wasn't even his?
He was about to make the mistake of going after you when Mobius finally returned from the storage room he had been talking to you in.
"What happened?" Loki asked with a hint of urgency, his brows furrowed.
Mobius took in a long breath and then let it go past his lips. "She said she wants nothing to do with you."
Loki's frown only deepened, his eyes shifting between Mobius and the place you had disappeared into. If anything, he looked slightly offended. "Why?"
"Well, it's pretty obvious that she watched her Loki die, right?" Mobius gestured around, sounding a little fed up with all of this. "So it's a delicate subject, give her time, don't get on her face, don't be obnoxious, and she'll likely come around and be willing to answer whatever it is you wanna ask."
Loki blinked at the words, chewing at the inside of his cheek. "I'm not obnoxious."
âââ ·â· âââ
"Stop looking at me like a lost puppy," you grumbled with a scowl on your features, gripping tightly onto your food tray.
Loki, who stood right beside you, scoffed. "I am not. I'm looking at the rice you're standing right in front of."
You breathed in, slowly, holding yourself back from rolling your eyes. It's been three weeks since Mobius tried to reintroduce you two, and for the past two weeks, you've gained a new shadow. He doesn't talk much; or interacts much with you at all for that matter. But he's always there.
TVA's cafeteria was usually bustling with people this time of day, which was exactly why you always came by at least an hour earlier; but today you got caught up with work and there was no other option than to brave the crowds, otherwise, you'd stay without lunch.
When you'd picked up everything you wanted to eat, you turned around and surveyed the spacious room for any vacant tables. By the corner and near the railings that overlooked the cityâor, what you would call a city here in the TVA, because to be honest, you still weren't sure what to name most of the things in this placeâstood the only vacant table left, small and round, with two lonely chairs.
You closed your eyes and mumbled a curse under your breath. You made a beeline for the table, and you didn't have to look behind you to know that Loki was following your steps.
You settled into a chair and a few seconds later Loki made himself comfortable beside you. It was⊠strange, having him around. The racing of your heart every time he was near you was inevitable, but you were doing the impossible to dissociate any feelings from it. He was just another variant, that was it, nothing more. You just wished you knew what his obsession with you was all about, so what if he saw his would-be future with you? That was not yours or his life anymore.
"Your food is gonna get cold."
Loki's voice caught your attention, you glanced toward him with a frown, only now realizing that you'd been poking your food around with your fork for a while, lost in thought. For a heartbeat, you held his gaze, you allowed yourself to drown in those ever-familiar bright eyes that you'd missed so much. But before you could lose yourself in the ocean, you swam back up. This wasn't your Loki, no; you had to remind yourself of it, time and time again. For your own sake, you had to believe in that lie.
For the last couple of weeks that he'd been following you around, more and more you noticed the same glint in Loki's eyes, a mix between expectant and lost. You wondered if even he knew what exactly he wanted from you.
The only answer you gave to him was a low hum.
âââ ·â· âââ
The days inside the TVA blend together easily, that was something you learned in your first few weeks here. In all fairness, it's what one would expect for a place out of time. Sometimes the day they captured you as just another variant felt like ages ago. Sometimes, it felt like just yesterday.
It had been difficult when you first arrived here, nearly unbearably so. In the blink of an eye, you had lost your entire life, everyone you still loved and held dear became unreachable. It was either starting a new life here, or ending your life altogether. For some reason, you still felt like living.
The TVA kept you busy then, enough for you to not succumb to panic. As days went by, it became easier; as time passed, or as Mobius would tell you, as time passed differently, you became almost numb to what you'd lost. Almost.
A sigh went past your lips as you ran your fingertips over the paper. Mobius usually had you go over each file reporting a possible new Loki variant. Finding patterns and creating connections they otherwise wouldn't have noticed. You tried not to dwell too much on the fact that you had to use your connection to the person you once loved as a form of work.
Your desk stood by the edge of the library, away from too much commotion, a cozy little space you'd given your own personal touch to over the time you'd been here. A few books here, a small cassette player there, a snack drawer, a sketchbook, a purple desk lamp; small things to remind yourself you were still human.
As much as you could, you made a new home here.
A shadow suddenly appeared over the paper in your hands, you straightened your posture on your chair before looking up.
Loki stood before you, in his dress shirt and dark jacket with the word variant on the backâyou'd worn one of those too on your first days here, now that you recall. He held a fresh stack of papers in his hands that already had you internally groaning.
"Mobius sends his regards," Loki smirked as he dropped the papers on your desk.
"Great," you mumbled, sarcasm dripping from your words, "it's not like I wanted to sleep tonight anyway."
A beat passed and you could feel Loki's gaze still lingering on you. From the corner of your eyes you watched as his fingers nervously tapped the wood of your desk. You hated that you knew this habit of his oh so well.
"Maybe I could assist you." Loki pulled a chair from the empty table to your left, setting it on the edge of your desk so he could sit down. But before he did so, he said, "If you'd like."
He was giving you an out from spending time with him, even if that was clearly what he wanted. You nearly took it. Your lips hung open, ready to say something like; I work better alone, or go bother someone else. But your eyes suddenly had a faint burn behind them, your chest squeezing tight around your heartâthe heart that still bled and missed him every day. "Knock yourself out," you found yourself saying, without looking up from your paperwork.
Loki sat down on his chair beside you, took a few of the papers in his hands, and for a good few minutes, the silence that lingered between you was, surprisingly, somewhat comfortable.
Stealing glances at you was inevitable. As Loki read the files in his hands, the words started to blur together, and he found his gaze drifting to you. He observed the way you'd frown slightly as you read over the lines, sometimes scoffing or mumbling something to yourself.
You were quite annoying, Loki had to agree with Mobius on that. Stubborn, closed off, and hard to read. If it were anyone else, Loki wouldn't even consider losing his time of day, but each time he saw you, his heart jumped and stumbled inside his chest, he grew short of breath, cold hands turning clammy. It was inevitable. His body acting against his will, as if his soul ached to touch yours.
He had to know why.
"May I ask," Loki began, hints of hesitance in his words.
Your eyebrow perked up a little, but you still refused to look at him.
Loki pursed his lips before speaking, "Mobius mentioned you've been here a while, that he found you could be useful. But he never went into detail." He let go of the papers in his hands, "how did you get here? Why didn't they prune you?"
You visibly tensed. Jaw setting tightly into place as you took in a short breath through your nose. For several moments, you kept quiet, eyes fixed on the same words in the file you held as you considered whether to humor him or not. You weren't sure why you answered, the words simply rolled off your tongue; a subconscious reaction to the sound of his voice.
"It was my fault, I tried to travel through time when I knew I shouldn't. They caught me pretty much immediately." You chuckled humorlessly, stealing a glance toward Loki only to find his eyes already focused on you. You nearly drowned again. "They kept me around becauseâŠ" You hesitated, and then merely gestured to the scattered papers on your desk; "I know a lot about Lokis," you shrugged, "and they needed help with that."
A small frown came to Loki's features as he weighed your words. He twirled one of your pencils between his fingers. "Why would you travel through time if you knew you shouldn't?"
Immediately, Loki knew he'd touched a nerve. Your whole demeanor changed, it almost felt like a curtain had fallen over you and a whole new person sat beside him. What little you had began to open up, was back under lock and key.
You didn't raise your voice, you didn't lash out. You simply cleared your throat, turned away from him, and said; "I thought you wanted to stay to help me work. So either do that, or leave me be."
Loki's lips hovered, ready to retaliate with a quip of his own, but he bit back any words he might want to say. Give her time.
He nodded to no one in particular, and indeed went back to work.
Later at night, when the TVA was strangely quiet, and most people had already turned in for the night. Loki glanced beside him only to find you drifting into sleep; one hand holding your cheek and the other loosely holding a pencil that had scratched a weird, faint line into the file on your desk.
It felt unexpectedly intimate. Loki glanced from one side of the dim-lit library to the other, as if looking for a clue on what he should do.
Carefully, almost comically so, he took the pencil from your delicate hold and stacked the file you had with the small pile he'd created.
The desk lamp right beside you cast a faint glow over your features, shaping your cheekbones, nose, and lips. Loki couldn't help but notice, that the light also shaped a thin but rather deep scar running from your forehead to the beginning of your left eyebrow; from the look of it, it appeared to have been there for a while now.
Without giving himself too much room to overthink, Loki reached out and gave a single push to your shoulder. His fingers tingled from your warmth.
You stirred awake, gasping softly as soon as you opened your eyes. You blinked several times, willing your mind to focus back on reality.
"I suppose we're done," Loki told you, keeping his voice just an octave lower as he turned his gaze to the small stack of papers. "If you're quick, you can still grab a few hours of sleep before the new day starts."
"Right," you breathed, running a hand through your hair. Eyebrows still furrowed as you processed what was happening.
You tidied your desk in silence, and Loki put the chair he had borrowed back in its place. He turned to you then, half expecting you to simply turn around and walk away. You didn't, and maybe it was a trick of the light, or the fact that he could visibly notice your eyes dropping from tiredness, but your features were the softest he had ever seen them be. A quick glimpse of the girl he'd first seen from the life he was supposed to have.
Loki held his breath. He wasn't sure why, but he did.
"Thank you for the help," you gave him a tight-lipped smile, refusing to hold his gaze for more than a second, "see you around."
With that, you turned around and left. Loki's heartbeat kept the same rushed pace until he reached his own small bedroom.
Arcadie: Cold Lands - Progress Update - October 2024
I've finally been able to seriously get back into writing last month.
I've just finished editing and coding Cyril's first "romantic" chapter. It was kind of tricky to write, because it had to accomplish several things: reestablish Cyril and MC's relationship, recap a few decisions from Arcadie: Second-Born, and reintroduce Cyril themself (in case the reader/player hasn't read ASB beforehand, or forgotten about it; since Cold Lands won't come out before at least 2025, I can't expect you to remember every single detail of it)
I've had to change plans about how I initially wanted routes to go. I initially envisioned them as being completely separate: you'd select which route you'd want to play right after the prologue (either Cyril, Will or Stan), but that posed a couple of issues, mainly: what if you don't want to play through a romantic route?
So now the story will differ depending on whether you're on a romantic path or not; some events will be exclusive to romance, but I think it will make for a more cohesive whole (can't say much more without delving into spoilers).
Well, that was a wall of text! Here's a sneak peak below the cut to make up for it (RO is male for screenshot's sake, three guesses as to who it is đ)
The girl behind the bar (Part 8 - Final Part)
pairing: Jake Hangman Seresin x plus-size reader
warnings: slight arguing
words: 3.2k
Summary: Jake has one last try to fix it with you and he was gonna make sure to give it his all. Go big or go home, isnât that what they say?
a/n: Here it is, the final part of my series. How did we get here? It's crazy! Thank you all SO MUCH for all the likes, reblogs and comments, they mean the world to me!! I hope you like this chapter!
Link to my masterlist
Itâs been over a week and you havenât seen or heard anything from your favorite group. They all had become friends to you and with Hangman, you would also get there eventually.
You got increasingly nervous and as well as Penny tried to hide it, she did too. Maverick being part of the mission seemingly wasnât planned as to what she had told you and now that he was, made the whole thing even scarier. If they needed someone as experienced as himâŠyou didnât want to think about what they had to do and where they had to go.
You only knew one thing for sure, you had definitely seen too many action and disaster movies to uphold any state of calm.
Showing up for work and getting through a shift was your only constant right now and you held on to it for dear life. Fuck, you really hadnât realized how much every single one of those idiots had found their way into your heart.
It was shortly after you had begun your shift on a Thursday when you heard familiar voices coming from the entrance. When you looked up, you saw Rooster first and then the others in their khaki uniforms following him into the bar. Your whole face lit up and you had a bubbly feeling in your stomach.
You got out from behind the bar and ran over to them. âYouâre back!â, you exclaimed excitedly and hugged Phoenix first. Then you went on to hug everybody and greeted them with a kiss to the cheek, so happy to see them back in this bar, alive and well.
You looked behind them, searching for Jake but nobody was coming in after them. Your heart sank and you felt a twist in your gut. The smile dropped from your face.
âHeâs fine. Heâs coming over laterâ, Rooster eased your mind and put his hand on your shoulder for comfort. You wished you werenât that relieved to hear that because that meant you cared more for Jake Seresin than it was good for you.
âAnd youâre all fine? Nothing broken, nothing missing?â, you asked them and checked their faces for bruises and their bodies for any missing parts. âWeâre all goodâ, Rooster laughed off your concerns. âBut weâre all quite thirstyâ, Fanboy stepped forward. âOf course, come with meâ, you smiled and motioned them to follow you. Rooster put an arm around your shoulders and you placed your arm around his middle as you walked to the bar circle together.
âFirst round tonight is on me for our heroesâ, you said as they all lined up at the counter and you grabbed bottle after bottle of beer, placing them in front of each one.
It got quite busy quite quickly at the Hard Deck and at the moment, you handled the circle alone. What would have led to a complete meltdown on your part just a few weeks ago, you now handled with some sort of grace and calm. At least youâd liked to think so.
Out of the corner of your eyes, you watched a man in a suit taking a seat at the counter, looking already annoyed. He looked so out of place here that it was almost funny.
"Hey, get me a scotch", he demanded more so than he asked. No please, no smile, whatsoever.
"I'll be right with you", you told him and didn't let his tone get to you. You were in the middle of serving a group of ten and had your hands full.
"How long is this going to take?", he called out in your direction after waiting for just 2 seconds. "Just a second", you said as politely as you could and even shot him a kind smile which was met by furrowed brows and a more than annoyed expression on his face.
"Hey girl, can I get another round for the table?", Rooster appeared at the counter next to you, using the nickname he had heard Phoenix and you use for each other. "Sure, just a moment", you told him, knowing he would have no problem waiting.
"Hey, lady. How much longer for my drink? What kind of service do you offer in this joint?", he asked full on angry.
You looked over at the suit, ready to say something to him, but then you saw his phone laying on the counter and had a better idea.
You looked over at Rooster who had followed your eyes over to that douchebag and then looked at you. You gave him a wink and then walked over to the sign Penny had hung up.
âMay I divert your attention here for a moment?â, you asked him and gestured elegantly at the sign like you were the prize lady at a game show.
You gave him a few seconds while his eyes flew over the words carved into the wooden plague before you rang the bell.
A cheer erupted across the bar. âWhatâs that supposed to mean?â, he asked in an intimidated yet aggressive tone. âMeans youâre paying a round for the whole placeâ, Rooster appeared next to the suit. Without a word you handed him a bottle of beer.
âMuch appreciatedâ, he toasted the guy with a smirk. âIâm not paying for shit!â, the guy exclaimed with furrowed brows. You looked over at Rooster with a satisfied grin. You had expected that answer.
âOverboard?â, he asked. âOverboardâ, you confirmed with a little nod. âAh, I always wanted to say that: Hold my beer!â, he exclaimed excitedly and handed you the bottle. Rooster whistled and motioned to the pool table and was quickly joined by Payback and Coyote.
You rang the bell once more and he called out âOVERBOARD!â. The whole room joined in on the chant. The guyâs face changed from rage to honest concern as the three tall men surrounded him. They grabbed his arms and legs and carried him out the back door to the deck and threw him into the sand.
âCome back when you found your mannersâ, you called after him and laughed as you watched him getting flung off the deck.
When you turned around, you found yourself face to face with Hangman and froze, but only for a second. âSame goes for youâ, you told him as the smile dropped from your face, sure that he had just witnessed the moment before.
You looked him up and down, checking for any bruises or injuries but you gladly didnât find any, just like Rooster had told you earlier.
You thought that him being gone for over a week would ease your mind about the whole situation, assuring yourself that you had found your inner peace with Jake and his stupidity. But no. Right when you saw his face, it all came back to you.
You wanted to walk to the other side of the bar circle but Jakeâs hand reached over the counter, grabbing your arm. âWait, Y/N, can we talk?â, he asked with a hopeful expression on his face. You looked at his hand on your arm and then up to his face. âYouâll be next if you donât let goâ, you said with a nod towards where the suit had landed in the sand. He let go of your arm and held his hands up, showing that he would play along.
"We already talked", you told him and walked half the circle to the other end of the bar. Jake followed you. "We're not done", he told you in return. "Oh, we're so done", you said and Jake heard the double meaning in your words.
âListen, Iâm glad youâre okay, I really am, but turns out, Iâm still mad at youâ, you told him straight out.
He took a deep breath before he walked around the edge of the counter and behind the bar.
"Y/N, I need you to listen to me", he said and his voice had an urgent undertone.
"Hangman, what have I told you about being behind that bar?", you heard Penny behind you, who had appeared out of nowhere.
"I just need two minutes", Jake told her and the pleading look in his eyes made her tolerate his presence behind the counter. For now. She turned away and took care of the customers waiting for their drinks.
"You got two minutes", you told him as you crossed your arms in front of your chest. He just looked at you, seemingly lost for words all of a sudden.
"119, 118...", you started counting backwards. "Okay, okay", he stopped you by holding his hands up in defense. âI was acting like an idiotâ, he said and paused. âIâm not disagreeingâ, you told him as he didnât continue talking right away.
âBut so were youâ, he said and you looked at him with big eyes at the unexpected words. âExcuse me?â, you asked in disbelief, putting your hands on your hips.
âYou said you were over it which was clearly a lie. And then you go on to say that we would just go back to being a bartender and a customer, which is bullshit. We are friends. And as a friend I messed up, I know that. And I will never stop apologizing for it, butâŠâ, he suddenly stopped himself in his tirade.
You just looked at him with big eyes, your heart beating faster with his every word.
âWhen I was away, I thought about you constantly. And when the mission went well, you were the first person I wanted to call. And I finally realized that IâŠI, uhmâŠâ, he paused again, seemingly mustering up the courage which was an odd state to see Hangman in.
You just looked at him, holding your breath, not daring to speak.
âY/N, I want to be more than friends with youâ, he finally said and it felt like time stood still for a moment. Your eyes focused in on his and the pleading look that was in them and the hopeful smile on his lips took your breath away.
You wanted to believe him. You wanted it so bad. But with everything that had happened between the two of you and also everything that had happened to you in your past, you just couldnât bring yourself to do it.
âJakeâ, you said and the almost apologizing tone in your voice made the smile drop from his face.
âYou donât believe meâ, he said, a resigned tone in his voice. âI mean, how could I? You kiss me and the next day you act like you donât even know me? Howâs a girl supposed to feel with something like that?â, you told him and hoped that this was explanation enough.
âAnd my words donât matter?â, he asked in return. You just looked at him, not knowing what to say.
âYour time is up, Hangmanâ, Penny called out from the other end and she didnât know how right she was.
âIâm sorryâ, now it was your turn to apologize. It surprised you how much turning him down actually hurt you. It should make you feel better, make you feel somewhat empowered but it didnât.
You turned around and walked over to a new customer sitting at the counter. âHi, what can I getâŠâ, you started.
âHey! Can I have everybodyâs attention for a moment?â, you heard Jake behind you, yelling to tune out the chatter and laughter in the bar.
When you turned around, you found him standing on the bar counter. Your eyes got big and a shocked expression washed over your face.
âHi, Iâm Jake. Most of you know me as Hangmanâ, he began and the people around quieted down bit by bit. Someone even unplugged the jukebox.
âWhat the hell are you doing?â, you quickly came over and hissed at him, but he ignored you.
âEverybody that knows me knows that I can be a real asshole sometimesâ, he continued. âYeah, no shitâ, Rooster called out from the back and some people chuckled.
âThanks, Roosterâ, he nodded in his direction. âBut I really messed up this time because I was stupid enough to hurt this beautiful woman right hereâ, he said and pointed to you by his feet.
Your cheeks turned bright red as you found the whole bar looking at you.
âJake, get down there. You're embarrassing yourself. But most importantly, meâ, you hissed at him, grabbing his ankle. You would have loved nothing more than to just yank him off this bar and end this charade.
âShe doesnât believe me that I actually like her and I canât blame her for it. But I need her to understand that I really do like her, very muchâ, he said and looked at you with a hand on his heart when he said it.
Normally, you would have rolled your eyes at a cheesy gesture like that but for the first time ever in your life, a cheesy gesture happened to you. It felt like you had an outer-body experience, watching yourself watching Hangman. This wasnât actually happening to you, was it?
âAnd thatâs why Iâm using this, arguably, very drastic move to officially ask you to please go out on a date with me?â, he asked.
You knew that every single pair of eyes in this room were looking at you right now and you never hated Jake more than this moment. You loathed being the center of attention and for him to put you on blast like thatâŠ
But at the same time, you thought about the fact that never in your life had someone done something like that for you.
âCome on, Y/N, say yesâ, you heard someone from the back of the room. Probably Coyote. âSay yesâ, you heard someone else from the other side. You glared up at Jake, chewing the inside of your cheek. He looked back at you with a hopeful expression.
âWill you finally come down if I say yes?â, you asked loudly so that the people could hear it. âThen, and only thenâ, he said and a smile played around his lips.
âOkay, Iâll go on a date with youâ, you finally agreed. âShe said yes!â, he called out with a big smile and the whole place erupted into cheers.
âGood godâ, you mumbled under your breath and felt your cheeks burning.
Jake hopped off the counter and stood next to you. Someone plugged the jukebox back in and the room was filled with music again. The chatter started back up and in a matter of seconds the bar was back to its old self.
âYou know youâre crazyâ, you said. âCrazy about youâ, he said and put his hands on your hips, pulling you in a little bit. For some reason, you let him. A flutter moved through your stomach. Your arms automatically flung around his neck.
It felt like your stomach was full of butterflies. What was happening right now? Five minutes ago, you were mad at him and now youâre swooning?
âBut you realize how embarrassing that was? For both of usâ, you told him off.
âYouâve said you liked gesturesâ, he countered. You were surprised that he remembered what you had told him when you were trapped here in this bar on that stormy night.
âSmall gestures like remembering the flowers I like or how I drink my coffeeâ, you reminded and lectured him at the same time.
He rolled his eyes at you playfully, looking up at the ceiling for a moment and then back at you.
âHow do you like your coffee?â, he asked with a smile. âNonexistent. I don't drink coffeeâ, you answered him and patted his chest with your hand before you stepped out of his embrace, attempting to get back to work.
âBut you just said...â, he said in disbelief. "It was an example, Jake. Good god! Normally you're a bit quicker than thatâ, you teased him and couldnât hold back the chuckle.
He reached out with his hand, hooked two fingers in the hem of your apron that was tied around your waist and pulled you close to him.
âYouâre killing meâ, he said and a smirk played around his lips. âA girl can tryâ, you shrugged your shoulders and shot him a wink and a grin before he bent down and kissed you.
The smile was wiped off you face rather quickly. He managed to surprise you one more time tonight.
You heard some cheers in the faint background but you couldnât care less at the moment.
You flung your arms around his neck again, sinking into his embrace. You felt his hands roaming your back and you got on your tiptoes to be even closer to him.
âAlright, alright, enough with the showâ, you heard behind you and reluctantly let go of Jake. He smiled at your lips before he let go as well to find Penny standing next to you.
âAs lovely as this is, youâre still behind my barâ, she said to Jake. âAnd you are actually working right nowâ, she added towards you. The smile on her face took the harshness out of her words.
âSorry, Pennyâ, you said and smiled apologetically. She looked at the two of you once more before she got back to the other end of the circle.
âAre you free this Saturday?â, he asked as he walked out behind the counter and leaned against it on the other side, giving you a big smile. You both felt giddy from your kiss.
âI doubt I get a Saturday off. How about a Tuesday-date? Those seem to work for usâ, you asked and reminded him of the stormy night after you had met in the diner where you had your date with Joseph. You pulled a beer out of the cooler, opened it and moved it over to Jake.
âSounds like a planâ, he agreed and grabbed his drink with a wink. Before he was able to walk over to his friends at the pool table, you reached out and grabbed the collar of his shirt to pull him close to your face.
âDonât make me regret this, Hangmanâ, you told him with a low voice and pressed a quick peck to his lips before you shoved him back with a smirk. âNeverâ, he shook his head with a smile and winked at you again before he walked over to the pool table.
âYou can take your 10 if you wantâ, Penny appeared next to you again. She was really quick on her feet tonight. Or you were just super distracted.
When you looked over to her you saw her gesturing towards Hangman who was talking to Rooster. Right when you looked over, so did he and his face lit up immediately, giving you another wink.
You thought about it for a second then a smile appeared on your face.
âHe got his date. He can waitâ, you told her and in response, she bumped her hips into yours with a chuckle and attended to some new customers.
You resumed to handing out drinks as well and got about 3 customers done until you suddenly looked up in nervous realization.
You had agreed to go on a date with Jake Hangman Seresin. How the hell did that happen?
a/n: You really thought I would let you guys hanging here? Well, you should know me better by now.
YOU WILL GET THE DATE!
Hi! I'm still feral for these two, would you mind giving us some art of them in their later years together!?
Hello angel!!!!
Sorry itâs taken so long to respondđ«¶đ«¶ but I wanted to draw some new art for this askđ
We have: Sebastian and Eloise trying out their new fancy camera with a selfie, pictures of them with their daughter, and finallyâŠidk I just always felt like this drawing is when theyâre a bit olderđ
I want to take this ask as an opportunity as well to talk a little about how I imagine their future (I have no chill & you can ignore this and just enjoy the art if you wantđ).
I am a COMPLETE pantser - I never know how a chapterâs going to end when I start writing it (I always just have a few scenes I know I need to include to keep the plot moving forward). Although I have different *big* scenes Iâm always writing towards, and themes/plot elements Iâm always foreshadowing (shout out to @elliecutte for catching *almost* all of my hints and appreciating my general no chillđ), IM STILL NOT 100% SURE HOW I WILL END THINGS !!! đł I have a lot of endings I see as possible, and I think soon it will become more clear to me what will work the bestđ
HAPPY ENDING:
Eloise and Sebastian become Unspeakables. I have a LOT of thoughts on this profession that could be its OWN post, and I feel like Unspeakables are generally specialized in one or two departments, but as their interests/research change they also change.
Eloise becomes an Unspeakable in the Mind and Death departments, with the occasional foray into Time. Her ancient magic is connected with all of these things (my version of AM is NOT like the game) & the Department of Mysteries is one of the only places that gives her any useful information about these things. Plus she thinks too much (it IS her hobby after allđđ) and is very introverted so a hermit job like this is a perfect fit.
Sebastian becomes an Unspeakable as well, but I feel like it takes him a long time to specialize in anything, if he ever does. I just feel like becoming an Unspeakable is the adult equivalent of sneaking into the Restricted Sectionđ„čđ«¶
They grow old together (I wonât explain TOO much) & have a lovely little familyđ„č at least one daughter that they both dote on. Sebastian had an amazing childhood (idyllic until it wasnât), and wants to give his daughter the same, and Eloise works hard to make sure their daughter feels the love that she never had growing upđ„ș
When Sirius is burned off the family tree, Eloise and Sebastian take him inđ„č𫶠(theyâre like 100 years old but WIZARDS LIVE LONGERâŠ) The same happened to her all those years ago, and she wants him to know that his whole family hasnât abandoned him.
Eloise LOVED her nieces - Bellatrix, Andromeda, and Narcissa - when they were younger, but as Voldemort becomes more powerful & people realize WHAT heâs doing, she has to separate herself from them. Her heart breaks seeing Bellatrix go mad, and seeing Narcissa engaged to a Malfoy out of obligationđ (iykyk)
I havenât thought any more about happy ending but I think itâs fun to think about how their future story might weave in with the actual canon events, ESPECIALLY since Eloise is a Blackđ„čđ
SAD ENDING:
After Sebastian gets his hands on Slytherinâs relic, it really starts to consume him and makes him even MORE obsessive than his natural tendencies - I imagine it similarly âtalkingâ to him like Slytherinâs locket/horcrux did in Deathly Hallows (đł)
Eloise is deathly afraid of the changes sheâs seeing in Sebastian and steals it from him (he would never willingly give it to her ESPECIALLY if it starts to feel like a precious item to him)
BUT the relic triggers the latent Black Family Madness in her - the madness that afflicts almost every woman in her family sinceâŠđ€ - and she herself starts to lose touch with reality. Her body and soul are already destroying themselves between the curse and the ancient magic inside of her, and the relic is what triggers it in her.
Sebastian becomes an Unspeakable, focusing on the Mind, in a desperate attempt to find a cure for his Eloiseđ„ș
He never gives up his research, and sometimes when he comes home she is lucid and they talk about his research - otherwise, he just loves and takes care of her.
(Heâs never successful in finding a way to reverse what he feels he caused in the first place - his ambition and single-mindedness is, to him, the reason why all of this happened)
Honestly who knows if I end their story either of these waysđ I just love thinking of AUs and different endings and I have a few others Iâve considered as well!!! And whatever endings I donât write will be immortalized on this blog and in my art as wellđ
#thank you for the ask!!!!#I have no chill when I answer these things which is why it takes me so long to answer themđ„Č#ngl I think the sad ending is quite romantic#but maybe Iâm too chicken to follow through/what I have planned could change a lot & it wonât make sense anymore#and like Iâm not COMPLETELY evil I like seeing them happy toođ„șđ„ș#and I also really love the Black family & all of the canon charactersâŠOFC I had to insert Eloise in that family somehow#and her mother was the PERFECT age !!!!!!!!!!! (according to the family tree)#I ALSO have a lot of thoughts on the Gaunts and actually how Ominisâs blindness prevents him from going insane like the rest of them#seem to have done by the time Tom Riddleâs around#(something something blind people canât hallucinate so they canât get psychosis)#hogwarts legacy#hogwarts legacy fanart#hphl#hogwarts legacy mc#hogwarts legacy oc#eloise babbit#sebastian sallow#sebastian sallow fanart#sebastian sallow x mc#hogwarts legacy fanfic#also Sebastianâs childhood is just based on mine#I grew up in a TINY village and spent all day running outside and having adventures like crazy or readinf like crazy no in-betweenđđ#ask
Chapter Twenty-Eight - The End Of It All
The Norris' were a notorious crime family in the UK. One of many. With Norris, the head of the family, running operations with his son, Lando, they work to keep Y/N Norris, Norris' daughter protected. Life in a crime family wasn't something they wanted for her.
But with tension with one of the Spanish crime families rise, Norris and his now deceased wife come up with only one plan, offer their daughter to the Sainz's or risk an all out war.
1.4K words
This is the final chapter of NNTA! I can't believe we're at the end. After 50000 words and heartbreak, we're finally at the end. Of course, I'm always open to blurb ideas for this series!
Series Masterlist
Being pregnant was hard, Y/N Sainz decided as she waddled around the house with Bones at her said. Bones was the guard dog, a beautiful Doberman, that her husband had bought for her. They had two other dogs, but Bones was hers, completely loyal to her.
She sat on the sofa, below the air conditioning, and turned on the television. Bones jumped up onto the sofa beside her, laying his head on her too large baby bump as the television started up.
"Querida," said Carlos as he walked past her, papers in his hands. He stopped and bent down to give her a kiss. "How is our little man doing?"
He didn't say anything about Bones, who usually wasn't allowed on the sofa when Carlos was there. Just scratched the space between his ears.
Y/N lifted Bones's head and grabbed a hold of Carlos's hand. She placed his hand onto her bump and let him feel. "Any day now," she said. "I can't wait to have him out of me."
Grinning, Carlos leaned down and kissed her cheek. "I can't wait to get you pregnant yet again," he said with a cheeky grin.
He went to stand up, but Y/N had already wrapped her arms around his neck, holding him in place. "Sweetie," she said slowly, still wearing her saccharine smile. "Honey, darling."
But then the smile dropped from her face. "You're not putting another baby in me, Carlos Sainz VĂĄzquez de Castro," she said and let go of him. "Not for another year, at least."
Carlos laughed and leaned down to give her one last kiss. He scratched the top of Bones's head and made his way back up to his office.
Ever since everything went down, Carlos was a different man. He'd stayed the same as the man Y/N had for company in the cabin, if not even sweeter. He wasn't cruel, he wasn't domineering and he wasn't abusive.
He was perfect.
Y/N watched the television in Spanish, with English subtitles on the bottom. It was really helping with her grasp of the language. Carlos helped too, when he could, whispering sweet words in her ear late at night. But, the biggest help of all, was Señora Sainz.
She refused to speak to Y/N in any sort of english, so she had to learn to adapt. During family dinners (where Carlos sat in the place of his father), the entire family spoke in Spanish, chatting about their day and whatever else came to mind.
After she had been watching Spanish soap operas for an embarrassing amount of time, Carlos walked out of his office, down the stairs and over to his wife, sitting in the seat opposite her.
"Verstappen wants Max to come and stay with us for a few days," he said as he laced his hands together.
This was great new. Y/N loved Max and she hadn't seen him since her short stay in the Netherlands. But there was something off about the whole thing. "Is Verstappen sending him as punishment for something?"
The look Carlos gave her confirmed it. Max was being punished for something and, knowing Jos, it was probably for being too soft. "We should just keep him here," she mumbled under her breath and readjusted her seating position (it was incredibly hard to get comfy being this pregnant). "He's twenty six and his dad treats him like a naughty little boy." She crossed her arms over her chest and pouted. "I hate Jos."
Max arrived at the Sainz house the next day. He went to say hello to Y/N, to wrap his arms around the woman he had gotten close to all those months ago, but Bones wouldn't let him. Held back by Carlos he barked at Max, snapping at his heels.
That was the first thing Carlos concentrated on, allowing the guard dogs to get used to him. It wasn't long before they realised he wasn't a dangerous intruder.
Max was the perfect companion for Y/N. He kept her company, had her relaxing with him in the pool (he was the first person to try going down the slide that Carlos had installed).
He was only in the Sainz house for a week before she went into labour.
The contractions started and Y/N didn't say anything, suffering through it with clenched teeth. Max didn't notice at first. He ate popcorn as they watched a movie, completely unaware.
And then they got stronger, closer together, and Y/N struggled to hide it. And then her water broke.
"Fuck!" Max cried when he finally notice. "Shit, shit, shit!" He ran out of the room, up the stairs and into Carlos's office. "The baby! Coming! Help!" He cried.
Max had never seen somebody move as fast as Carlos did in that moment. He was out of his office in the blink of an eye and running down the stairs heading towards his wife. "Max! Get the go bag from my closet!" He shouted.
As Carlos headed to Y/N, Max ran down the hall and into Y/N and Carlos's bedroom. He went straight into the walk-in closet and went through it, searching for the go bag. Carlos hadn't thought about what was in the closet when he sent Max to get the go bag. He didn't think about Max pushing the handcuffs, whips and more to the side as he searched for the go bag.
But Carlos didn't have time to think about that. He crouched in front of his wife and pushed her hair out of her face. "Mi amor," he said, taking her hands. "Max said the baby is coming. Are you ready to go to the hospital?" His voice was calm as he spoke.
Y/N nodded her head. "Get this thing out of me," she said through a laugh and allowed her husband to help her up.
Slowly and carefully he walked her through the house, leading her to the front door. Max joined them, go bag over his shoulder. He held the front door open as Carlos walked her towards the car.
Being the wife of Carlos Sainz, head of the Sainz family, meant that she got the best medical care available. Her cries filled the hospital as she pushed, her husband holding her hand and pressing a damp cloth to her forehead. "You're doing it, baby," he said softly.
Y/N couldn't hear him as he spoke, too focused on the pain. Nothing could have prepared her for this feeling. But it would all be worth it, she had to keep telling herself.
After a matter of hours (although it felt a lot longer), Oscar Pau Sainz was crying in his fathers arms. He had been wrapped in a blanket, a little blue hat on his head. Y/N had her eyes closed as she took a moment to rest, utterly exhausted after the whole ordeal.
Left out in the waiting room, it had been Max's job to inform the other heads of families. Everybody (but his own father, who didn't really care) messaged to congratulate the couple and made arrangements to get to Spain as soon as possible
The next day, after staying overnight in the hospital, Carlos and Y/N drove him. Max had taken the car and driven home the day before, but had come back to pick the couple up. He drove with Carlos in the passenger seat and Y/N in the back with baby Oscar, her baby Oscar.
"A package for you guys came," said Max as they drove towards the house. "I've left it in the kitchen."
When they got to the house, Y/N and Carlos walked straight up stairs and into baby Oscar's room. "This is your bedroom," she whispered as Carlos carried the carrier inside.
As Y/N laid baby Oscar in the crib, Carlos ran downstairs for the package. He didn't know what he expected, but it certainly wasn't this. He placed the package back in the box and brought it up to his wife, who was sitting in the rocking chair in baby Oscar's room.
"Here," he said, passing it to her. He grabbed her hand and pulled her up, sitting in her place and pulling her into his lap.
Y/N took the item out of the box. It was a little stuffed rabbit that looked a little worn and old, but had certainly been cleaned. "Oh, this is lovely," he said, laying the rabbit in her lap as she grabbed a hold of the note inside of the box.
He'd want him to have this - N. Piastri (Oscar's mom)
Pickpocket
Summary: You've successfully managed to pickpocket a fortune. While you're fantasising about the things you could do with so much money, you're dragged away by the royal guards to face the wrath of Prince Katsuki.
Pairing: Bakugo x f!reader
A/N: I wanted to complete the story within this chapter, but it got too long. See you in the next chapter!
Part 1; Part 3
You opened the coin bag you had pickpocketed from the mysteriously covered stranger, your jaw dropping to the floor when you saw it was filled to the brim with gold coins. It looked like you had just stolen someone's life savings.
Your parents and siblings knew that apart from the hunts you went on and did not make much from, you often went out to pickpocket, something you often got scoldings for. But the few extra silvers that you managed to get lightened the weight on your parents' shoulders to some extent. It was usually just a few coppers and silvers you stole. How were you going to explain this fortune you pickpocketed?Â
While you were in the middle of counting the coins, your youngest brother decided to come into your room, gaping at the gold on your desk, "Y/n, what is that?! Did you just hunt a super rare creature or something?"
"You know the only thing available in these forests is rabbits and birds or deer if we're lucky," a mischievous glint flashed in your eyes, "I pickpocketed this."
"You're unbelievable," He shook his head, picking up a coin, which you snatched, "With that much gold, we'll be able to eat three times a day, buy a horse and a carriage, new clothes and a whole castle!"
You smiled at the youngest. It wasn't enough to tend to all his dreams, but it still made you happy knowing you could at least feed your family and get a few needed household items. However, your fantasies were short-lived when you heard a series of heavy knocks on the front door.
"I'll go see who it is." You went to see who it was to find your father had already answered the door. You froze when you saw five hulking royal guards talking to your father. You didn't need to step forward and talk to them to know this was about you.
Who was the person you pickpocketed? Perhaps a noble or someone close to the royal family? Sweat rolled down your neck when one of the guards caught your eye. He matched in past your father, squinting at your face, "Oi, she's the one we're looking for!"
"Me? What could I have possibly done?" You innocently batted your eyelashes.Â
"Don't pretend like you don't know why. You stole from the prince." The guard spat.Â
"Y/n? Is this true?" Your father asked. Your face drained of colour. That person you stole from was the prince? You even insulted him! God, you were in a shit ton of trouble.Â
"I found the coins!" One of the guards exclaimed from behind you, coming out of your room with your brother, hitting the guards back with closed fists to give the money back.Â
"Stay off, brat. This is not yours. It belongs to the royal family." The guard kicked your brother in the gut, sending him flying away. You growled at him, pouncing at him with a fist ready.
"Don't you dare touch him!" You yelled, swinging your fist at his face. Before the punch could land, another guard kicked you in the side, sending you crashing into a wall.Â
"Now you're in trouble not only for stealing but also for trying to harm a royal guard," One of the guards took you by the arm, pulling you to your feet, "Prince Katsuki will see to you personally."
"Like I give a rat's ass!" You spat, thrashing as the guard held your hands behind you. Another guard tried getting your legs to stop flailing but got his jaw bruised instead. Your family was huddled together in a corner, timidly watching you try to pry away from the guards.Â
"Get off me!" You yelled as you got dragged away and got tied onto a horse with your mouth and hands tied so the guards wouldn't have to listen to your constant yelling and complaints.Â
Once at the ginormous castle, two guards held you by your arms, dragging you inside. You shuddered when you felt the cold from the marble floor travel up your spine. You must've lost your shoes when the guards yanked you around.Â
"Mind your manners when in the presence of the prince." One of the guards said, his fingers digging into the flesh of your arms. You shot him a glare, trying to free your arm from his grip. What was the point of bruising your arms when your hands were already tied behind you?Â
The doors to the throne hall were opened, and the guards dragged you inside, forcing you to your knees so you were bowing low. When they let your head lift from the floor, you dared to look up.Â
There he was, Prince Katsuki, sitting on the prince's chair beside the King's and Queen's throne, blood-red eyes mindlessly boring into you. All that you heard about the prince was true-- stunning crimson eyes, spiky ash-blonde hair, and flawless skin. Behind his lethal beauty was evident rage and fury.
Bakugo could see your gaze wavering between the floor and him as you tried to keep that sassy and brave front. Your hair was in a mess, and your clothes were dirty from being pushed and kicked around. He told his guards not to use force, and here you were, looking like you fell into a wrestling pit. The guards standing behind you didn't look any better, with scratches and bruises on their faces.Â
"Your Royal Highness," One of the guards behind you said, "This woman not only stole from you but also put up a fight with us."
"Care to explain?" Bakugo rasped.
"Your guard kicked my ten-year-old brother in the stomach. Was I supposed to stand and watch?" You snarled at the prince, your teeth bared. Bakugo's eyes shifted to the guards, demanding an answer.Â
"Y-Your Highness, the child was clinging to my back and-"
"So you kicked him." Bakugo cut him off, standing up and coming down the steps that lead to the thrones, stopping in front of you, "Get out, all of you. I'll deal with you later."
"But, Your High-"
"Now."
You gulped once the guards were gone, and although you hated them, you wished they'd stay since being alone with the prince made you feel like you were going to get slaughtered like a lamb. You held his gaze from your position on the floor, not letting your fear slip through your eyes.Â
"Stand." He ordered.
"Are one-word sentences all you know to speak, princeling?" You smiled at him with sickly sweet poison. "I really like it on the floor. It's comfortable."
You let out a gasp when he suddenly pulled you to your feet, the fabric of your shirt balled in his fist, his maroon eyes dangerously close, "Watch who you're talkin' to, sweetheart," he growled, his voice reverberating in his chest, "I could throw you in prison forever, and you wouldn't be able to do anything about it."
"Must be fun being a spoiled prince, eh." Bakugo looked down at your devilish grin. Weren't you afraid of him one bit? Prison was the place every little thief like you went to, but something about you stirred amusement and another mysterious feeling deep within him. It wasn't every day he got to see a brat like you roast a prince right at his face and take on five guards at once.
"Besides," you went on. "I'm going to go to prison anyway. I might as well strut in there with a show."Â
"You have some nerve speaking to me like that," He scowled, letting your shirt go, "You ain't going to prison."Â
"Huh?"Â
"Yer servin' three months at the castle." He said. "And if I find you snooping around and stealing, I'm chopping your ugly fingers off."Â
"I'm not scrubbing your dishes and sweeping your damn floors." You scoffed. "Throw me in prison instead."
"Does that pretty little mouth of yours ever shut up, or does it have a fucking answer to everything?" Bakugo glared at you. You had some guts rejecting his orders like he was some commoner you'd known all your life.Â
"I'm not working at the castle, and that's final." You said firmly.Â
A hint of fear flashed in your eyes when Bakugo bared his teeth at you, approaching you with slow strides. You kept backing away until your back was pressed into the doors behind you, your chest tightening when you saw his hand rest on the hilt of the sword dangling from his side.Â
He lowered his head to your level, roughly grabbing your chin and making you look into his eyes. When you tried to shift to the side, he put an elbow on the door, trapping you. Looking into his deep red eyes, you felt your heartbeat quicken, knots forming in your stomach.Â
"I'm the one who decides what your punishment is. Do not forget that," he purred into your ear. You almost shivered. His voice was supposed to be scaring you, not making your heart race, "Either you work here for three months or get your hands cut off."
He pulled away, smirking down at you satisfyingly. He could tell you were flustered as you glared daggers at him, "Am I clear?"
Your gaze shifted down to the floor, "Yes."
He called for the servants to take you to the servant quarters and get the filth cleaned off you. You sat in an unnecessarily big tub filled with warm water as the other servants scrubbed your body raw. You blankly let them, still trying to process what on earth had just happened. After your bath, you were forced into a night suit that would have been considered low quality for the royals and nobles, but it was more expensive than anything you ever owned.Â
"What kind of punishment is this?" You muttered, lying on the comfortable bed in your new room.Â
It was a very big punishment.
It all started going down from the moment you woke up. The head maid scolded you for not waking up early enough and rushed you into the kitchen, where you got yelled at by the chef for not washing the dishes quickly enough.
"What are you even good at?!" He yelled, pushing you aside when you somehow managed to burn the stew he made. All you were supposed to do was stand and watch it.
"I'm good at hunting." You mumbled.
"Too bad you're not here for hunting," He gave you a sour look as he diced up the ingredients to remake the stew.Â
After the dishes were done, you were handed a mop and a bucket to sweep the great hall. You took a deep breath, stepping into the thankfully empty great hall. It was just mopping the floor. You wouldn't mess this up, right?
As you mopped the floor, you tried convincing yourself this was better than rotting in the prison for who knows how long. You just wanted to go back to bed and let your poor back rest, but it was still only the afternoon. Sighing, you stepped towards the water bucket to dip the mop inside, accidentally knocking the bucket in the process. You deadpanned, tears forming in your eyes. This castle brought nothing but bad luck.Â
You cringed when the soapy water soaked into the long red carpet that led up to the King's and Queen's thrones. You turned around in horror when you heard the doors to the great hall open, slipping and falling to your ass. The fact that it was the prince that opened the doors only made things worse.Â
"Are you okay there?" A red-haired man asked, stepping forward.Â
"M' fine." You mumbled, slipping down again when you tried standing again.Â
"Looks like someone's having a great time," The prince snickered. If he wasn't a prince you'd have slapped him in the face to wipe away that mean smirk. You scowled at him, stopping when you saw a hand in front of your face. It was the red-haired man looking down at you with a warm grin. You noticed he had interesting sharp teeth. You put your hand in his, letting him hoist you up.
He inspected your face for a second and then looked at Bakugo, raising an eyebrow. You were the very same girl Kirishima saw bump into Bakugo yesterday. He was sure Bakugo said that you were a pickpocket, then what were you doing here in the servant's attire?
"Go get someone else to clean it since you clearly can't," Bakugo ordered. You clenched your jaw at him, grabbing a fistful of your dress. Why did he have to be so mean and harsh with his words? You would have loved to hit his head with the mop but knew better than to give in to your intrusive thoughts. You stormed past him and got some rags to clean up the mess you made.
Once Kirishima was sure you were out of earshot, he turned to Bakugo, "Why is she here, prince?"Â
"Serving three months in the castle for stealing, hurting five guards and being a brat," Bakugo replied in a matter-of-fact tone.Â
"Couldn't you have put her to prison instead?"
"Tch, are you trying to tell me what to do?"Â
"No, my prince."Â
Bakugo sighed, turning his back to Kirishima, eyes plastered to the floor, "Her family has been struggling with basic necessities," he said after a moment of silence. "I learnt that her father had a fabric business before the war started, but his shop burnt down during the war. He hasn't been working ever since."
Kirishima blinked at Bakugo, baffled he had delved so deep into someone's background. "A lot of people are still suffering even though it's been years." He said.
"Yeah," Bakugo agreed. "She lives in a pretty shitty neighbourhood, too, now."
"Is there something that can be done to help?" Kirishima asked.
"I've already done what I could." Bakugo grunted, "They ain't gotta worry about rations. I talked to Father about it, and he agreed to send monthly rations to the entire neighbourhood."
"That's nice," Kirishima smiled. He had a feeling you not only stole Bakugo's money at the weekend market yesterday but also accidentally stole his heart.
Destined Part 1
Warnings for this chapter: None?
Series Masterlist
I sighed as I heard a loud knock on my front door. Grabbing the bag of flour I made my way to the door assuming it was just my neighbor Marcy wanting some for baking again. The girl never seemed to have any and always came over for mine which I didnât mind. I just started buying more when I would go to the store.Â
âMarcy hun you should really just-â I froze as I saw Strange on the other side of the door and a young girl stood next to him.
ây/n nice to see you.â He spoke. With a sigh I sat the flour down on the small table by the door before inviting them in.
âTea?â I asked while making my way into the kitchen as they both followed after me. The young girl politely nodded her head and took a seat at the island along with Strange who sat a very old looking book down on the countertop.
It was silent for a minute. The only sound being me getting down three mugs and the teapot whistling on the stove.Â
I sat the tea in front of the two along with some sugar as I took to standing across from them.
âWhat do you need Strange?â My tone came out more bitter than I wanted it to but I couldnât help it. After I left what remained of the Avengers I had hoped I would never have to see his face or any of theirs ever again. That's why I moved to Ohio so that I would be away from the never ending drama that is New York and to be close to my sister's grave.
âI- We need your help. This Is America Chavez. Sheâs able to travel the multiverse.â With those words I choked on my tea.
âThe multiverse?â I questioned not trusting my ears to have heard the right thing.
âYes. You know about it?â He asks as he and the girl, America, looked at each other.
âVision often talked of his theories during movie nightsâ The word Vision seemed to make me scowl remembering how he got the life with the person I had loved. The person who was supposed to be my wife.Â
âYou said Wanda said the same thingâ This was the first time the girl had spoken and the way she said Wanda had made your whole body shiver. It was as if she was scared of the woman.
âYou spoke to her?â I hadnât heard anything of her since that night I left. I expected to at least see something about her on the news but she never came up.Â
âYeah. Sheâs after me. Sheâs been sending these weird creatures after me to take my powers.â America explained as she fiddled with the mug.
âShe has the dark hold y/nâ The words caused me to stiffen. I had only heard of the dark hold a few times while I was studying with Strange but I knew it was nothing good. It was described as the book of the damned and anyone who touched it became corrupted. âI need your help in protecting America. Yours and Wandaâs magic are almost complete opposites. While hers is chaos magic while yours is Order magic.â The two shared another look as if they both knew something I didnât. I watched as Strange opened the book he had brought and flipped to a page. âWith the help of the darkhold Wanda has become the Scarlet Witch. Everything anyone had ever known about her is written in this book like a prophecy.â I nodded as I listened to his words. âIt also speaks of yours.â He slides the book over to me and setting my tea down I quickly read the page he had opened to.Â
The Scarlet Witch bringer of chaos and the White Fawn bringer of life and creation:
The Scarlet Witch is not born; she is forged. She has no coven or need for incantation. Her power exceeds that of the Sorcerer Supreme. It is her destiny to destroy the world.Â
The White Fawn is the opposite of the chaos bringer. She is born to counteract the actions of the Scarlet Witch. Her destiny is to heal the wounds, love, and calm the Chaos Witch.
My eyes scanned the page three more times before I slammed the book shut. I watched as America jumped in her seat and I sent her an apologetic smile as I slid the book back to Strange.Â
âThat canât be right or it canât be me. Wanda does not love me. I will not let my destiny be what is written in some book. What is she even after in the multiverse?â My question seemed to keep Strange quiet for a moment before he spoke.
âYouâ
