The Bookshelf Conversation #183: Dan Epstein on James Earl Jones
It was a shocker to see the breaking news on CNN on Monday that James Earl Jones had passed away. The tributes that followed seemed to highlight two roles: Darth Vader from the Star Wars universe and Terrence Mann from Field of Dreams. But Jones, who died at the age of 93, was also in a couple of other beloved baseballs flick: The Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars and Motor Kings and The Sandlot…

MLB 2022 "Sandlot" Game to be Played Following Success of "Field of Dreams"
The first ever Major League Baseball game played in Iowa occurred last week on the site where the movie Field of Dreams was filmed in the late 1980s. The event was aired on primetime network television which is rare for MLB games these days. The nostalgia infused event received good reviews and served as very positive publicity for a league that has had to deal with many controversies as of late, including the recent widespread use of foreign substances by pitchers which resulted in unpopular umpire inspections.
Due to the success of this special game, MLB officials have already announced a special "Sandlot" game slated for next season in the San Fernando valley of Los Angeles. Fan excitement is already at a high level for this game which will pay tribute to the beloved movie about neighborhood kids whose experience playing baseball in a poor-quality “sandlot” had a great influence during a formative summer of 1962.
The game will feature an authentic rugged field, complete with infield rocks and a rickety old wooden outfield fence that borders homes in the neighborhood. Just as Kevin Costner promoted last week’s game, James Earl Jones will be brought in to promote the game who was featured in both the Sandlot and Field of Dreams.
Unlike the recent game, the sandlot game will have bonus features including a few rule changes. To start, the game will include a giant dog chained behind the rickety outfield fence, female lifeguards in place of traditional ball girls, and the whole game will be sponsored by Baby Ruth candy bars. There will only be a very limited supply of baseballs, which may force players to retrieve homerun balls from the dog. Finally, in an attempt to broaden female interest of MLB, at the end of the game, one player with be honored with the “playing like a girl” award for outstanding performance. Finally, in keeping with the spirit of the rugged sandlot theme and experience, fans will only be allowed to sit on small aluminum bleachers or lawn chairs they bring with them, and concession food sizes will be limited to “smalls” only.
Additional future movie-themed events being considered by Major League Baseball include games inspired by A League of Their Own where all players will wear skirts, and The Naked Gun where players and umpires will be given awards based on their comedic slapstick abilities while playing.

Backyard Baseball Doodle
Did you know that the very first Google Doodle way back in 1998 paid tribute to the annual Burning Man event in Black Rock City, Nevada? That’s right, and even more surprising, it was designed by co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin themselves to notify users of their absence in case the servers crashed. For Independence Day on July 4, 2019, Google turned its logo into an interactive game of backyard barbecue baseball. You can play as H-Dog, Power Pop, Wild Slice and the Cobbra. Read more for a video of it in-action, additional information and a link to the game.

Check it out here. Google Doodles were neither animated nor hyperlinked initially, but rather simple images with hover text describing the subject or expressing a holiday greeting. They began appearing more frequently and in complexity starting in the 2010s, and the first animated Doodle honored in January 2010 honored Sir Isaac Newton. The very first interactive Doodle appeared shortly thereafter in the same year celebrating Pac-Man on May 21, 2010.

Backyard Baseball is a software released in 1997 by Humongous Entertainment. Backyard Kids Achmed Khan (getting picked) Let's rock 'n roll! (Amir Khan also says this). Sandlot baseball is tricky to define: Ask 10 participants, and they’ll all struggle to find the right words before inevitably giving you 10 different answers. It’s not really about the baseball. Sure, a game is played - eight innings (nine seemed like a bit much, apparently), wood bats, 60 feet to home, 90 feet to first, a uniformed umpire.

Backyard Baseball is a series of baseballvideo games for children which was developed by Humongous Entertainment and published by Atari. It was first released in October 1997 for Macintosh and Microsoft Windows. Later games were featured on Game Boy Advance, PlayStation 2, GameCube, Wii, and iOS. It is part of the Backyard Sports series. There have been eleven different versions of the game since 1997. Some of the game titles that were created include Backyard Baseball, Backyard Baseball 2001-2010, and Backyard Sports: Sandlot Sluggers.
The original game consisted of 30 neighborhood kids from which the gamer could choose to play.(1) Over the years, the idea of 'Pro players as kids' became popular, and the original statistics and looks of the players changed. Some of the professional players that were available included Chipper Jones, Frank Thomas, Alex Rodriguez, Alfonso Soriano, Ichiro Suzuki, Sammy Sosa, Jim Thome, Albert Pujols, Nomar Garciaparra, Ken Griffey Jr., and Barry Bonds. As the game progresses, there are some professionals that become available or 'unlockable' including Randy Johnson, Derek Jeter, and Mike Piazza.

In Backyard Baseball, players take a managerial role by creating a team of different players to compete against opponents. In the different installments, a player could play an exhibition game or a 14, 16 or 32 game season (different versions vary) followed by the 'Backyard Baseball League' playoffs, which contains the American League and National League divisional series, the AL and NL championship series and finally the 'Backyard Baseball World Series'. Series games will vary per game.
This game has various playable modes, they include: Single Game, Batting Practice, Spectator, and Season Game.
In 2013, The Evergreen Group acquired the intellectual property from Atari.
Legacy(edit)
Pablo Sanchez, one of the fictional playable characters in the game, has been regarded as the strongest character in video game history.(2)(3)(4)
The game has also been noted for its diversity (gender, race) of characters, both in ratio of white to non-white and male to female, as well as skill level and the distribution of the best characters.(5)
Players(edit)
In Backyard Baseball 2001, the Backyard kids are joined by 31 MLB pro players, many of which were all-stars during the 1999 Major League Baseball All Star Game. Eventual Hall of Fame players featured include Barry Larkin, Vladimir Guerrero, Jeff Bagwell, Larry Walker, Chipper Jones, Derek Jeter, Mike Piazza, Tony Gwynn, Ken Griffey Jr., Cal Ripken Jr., Ivan Rodriguez, and Randy Johnson, who are all playable characters to choose from.
Several of these players would be featured in multiple releases including Nomar Garciaparra, Derek Jeter, and Alex Rodriguez.
Power-Ups(edit)
Sometimes accompanying the four standard batting modes (Power, Line Drive, Grounder and Bunt), some beneficial power-ups appear. In the original Backyard Baseball, these batting power-ups appeared when the player got a hit when the computer used a 'crazy pitch' (see below). Starting from Backyard Baseball 2001, the power ups were awarded after a hit off a 'crazy pitch' and when the player turned a double play or triple play on defense. In addition to these batting power-ups, pitching power-ups, or 'crazy pitches,' also progressively appear, though they are much more frequent and in number, occurring whenever the player strikes an opponent out. These pitches consume much more energy and causes the strike zone to expand, so most of the pitches given are never used consecutively. In addition to the 'crazy pitches,' a strikeout may also award the player 'More Juice,' a full energy recharge for the pitcher that can be used when the player sees fit to use it.
Backyard Baseball 2001
Batting Power-Ups
Aluminum Power: This power-up is the most valued and can disappear after one or no tries when in use. Players use an aluminum bat to increase the chances to hit a home run.
Screaming Line Drive: The power-up last about two uses and appears more frequently. Players hit a fast line drive to the wall and allows the batter to run more or all bases.
Under Grounder: This move lasts at least two uses. Players hit a ground ball that goes into the ground, causing the ball to reappear in any random area of the outfield.
Crazy Bunt: The move disappears after one or no tries when in use, but if the power-up is used sparingly, the move can last up to four uses. When the ball is hit, the ball rolls around the field erratically as fielders just barely miss catching it.
Backyard Baseball Google Sites
Pitching Power-Ups
Big Freeze: The ball is thrown like normal but suddenly stops just before it enters the strike zone, often faking the hitter into swinging at the pitch.
Elevator: The ball is thrown low along the ground and then the ball suddenly jumps into the air at the last moment.
Crazyball: the ball 'laughs' when thrown, and it moves in random directions in the air. Easier to hit if swingspot is enabled
Corkskrew: The ball makes a spiral motion through the air. Easier to hit if swingspot is enabled
Zigzag: The ball makes a zig-zag motion through the air. Easier to hit if swingspot is enabled
Slomo: The ball travels very slowly through the air, requiring precise timing to be hit.
Spitball: The ball is covered with saliva and jerks in the air.
Fireball: One of the most powerful pitches, the ball blazes past the batter in a ball of fire at an incredibly high speed. When used by a player, this pitch is the most draining of the pitcher's stamina.
Backyard Baseball Google Sites
Backyard Baseball 2005
Batting Power-Ups
Sonic Boom: The player knocks down opposing fielders with a super-powerful shockwave.
Rubber Bat: The batter bounce a grounder really high into the air — the player will have a chance to reach base before any fielder catches the ball.
Butter Fingers: The player will splatter the opposing fielders with butter. They'll have a slippery time trying to field your hit.
Jumping Bean Bunt: This tricky power-up makes the ball jump all over the place!
Lightning Bat: Produce tremendous power when you connect with the ball.
Geyser Hit: The batter makes the ball burrow deep underground before it suddenly surfaces somewhere in the outfield.
Piñata Bat: The batter drives fielders crazy when the ball is hit, the ball multiplies into dozens of bouncing baseballs.
Aluminum Bat: Automatic home runs of insane distance.
Backyard Baseball Doodle 2
Pitching Power-Ups
The Fang: The Fang looks like a normal curve-ball, but it bites hard at the last second and goes straight into the dirt.
Freezer: The Freezer stops just before reaching the strike zone, pauses briefly, and then continues.
Slomo: This ball starts moving at ultra-slow speed just before reaching the strike zone.
Juice Box: The Juice Box will refill your pitcher's Pitch Juice Box.
Rainbow Pop-up: When it's hit, the ball goes straight into the air for an easy out.
Crazy Pitch: The Crazy Pitch is so wild that even the pitcher doesn't know where it will go.
Splitball: This pitch splits into two separate curve-balls, one of which is a fake, unhittable baseball.
Fireball: The Fireball is so fast it can burn a hole in your catcher's glove.

Let's Catch Up
So far this baseball club has been in the Bad News Bear League for 10 season prior to this tumblr page. So brief history and the team moniker. Originally this team was the California Bears, the namesake of the league. Someone quit and the Off Day Sim-Sports Group took over. ODS changed the teams name to the Adohr Farm Tigers. To pay tribute to another baseball classic "The Sandlot". The Tigers were the little league that want to play the sandlot boys, after the pitcher was told "he throws like a girl!" by the great Hambino. Nobody got it and when a name suggestion of the Wichita Wingnuts came along, ODS fell in love with name and here we are. All story are based out of the Wichita settings, like the now former stadium Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. White Castle being founded in Wichita. Along with the team itself like #GONUTS and old logos. So there is how the defunct American Association baseball club was revived & remembered.

To best understand the legacy of Kobe Bryant, and how transcending he was, simply look at the events of today. Since his death, memories & tributes to his life engulfed Social Media. During the Pro Bowl, more time was spent talking about his life & death and honoring Him with celebrations after sacks & scores, video tributes and a moment of silence, than was spent talking about the game itself. During the Grammy's tonight, tribute was paid his memory. Kobe Bryant didn't just transcend the game of basketball, He transcended all of sports, and even transcended life itself! A friend of mine said, "he was a living legend, but now he's just a legend.". I would argue that He is far more than that! He's definitely not JUST a legend. The impact of Kobe Bryant stretches farther and wider than one could ever imagine! From inspiring a generation of young basketball players to legions of sports fans and athletes across other sports, and his impact on communities through outreach. Even his impact on his daughters as a father, an example we all watched as he sat courtside with Gianna at basketball games. Something he got into once Gianna took up a passion for the game of basketball. Before that, he never watched a lot of games after his retirement. Simply put, Kobe Bryant's legacy and global impact put him in the upper echelon!! "Heroes get remembered, but legends never die!", as the Sandlot quote goes! Kobe Bryant may be gone, but he'll never be forgotten!! #RIPMamba https://www.instagram.com/p/B7z0f2xnSOsmPRLo9cWnWoNIqtxsW_uORe0hk40/?igshid=1pv30i6ffc2ea

YAAAAHHH!!! An "Earth Defense Force 2017" Review Played on Xbox One (Backwards Compatibility) Beat in 5 Hours, 25 Minutes and 30 Seconds Photo Above: Giant Fire Ants Attack the player in one of the missions. Review by TheAutisticGamer (Michael) Throughout the history of movies, there have been monsters. Universal popularized them with Invisible Man, Dracula, Frankenstein, The Mummy, so many more. Of course, aliens were a big thing after World War 2 with movies like Godzilla, the cold war drama The Day The Earth Stood Still, the fun Plan 9 From Outer Space all had aliens, but then, Robert A Heinlein wrote Starship Troopers in the 60's and was adapted as a 90's film. Starship Troopers was a movie about space marines killing giant ants. Yeah. You heard me. Giant ants. It became a cult classic and Sandlot, the makers of the Japan Only Global Defense Force, thought that it was time to bring monsters movies into game form with Earth Defense Force 2017. This is one of the earliest Xbox 360 Games from 2006 and it features not only Giant Ants, but robots, Godzilla Mechs, Motherships, Spaceships, Huge Tarantulas, Giant Fortresses of Doom, it had it all. EDF 2017 is a celebration of Monster Movies and culture in general. Being grown on Godzilla and Mothra movies, Sandlot put a lot of effort into creating an English Dubbed monster movie in a game format. Heavily influenced by Heinlein's novel and Paul Verhoeven's 90's film, the game takes place in Japan where in the year 2017, Aliens called Ravagers start attacking and destroying Earth. The whole game features you in a team called Storm-1 as you kill Ants, Spiders, Robots and Fleshy Godzilla Like Mechs as you try to save humanity from disaster. By the end of the game's 53 levels, there is only one force in the world left as you fight the game's main villain, the mothership. EDF 2017 has a story that is indirectly told through communication and radios and it's a highly interesting story especially when the Ravagers start attacking North and South America. One of the most interesting aspects of the game is it's cooperative feature. The game has a solid local coop play mode that has two players killing the Ravagers in the said 53 missions and it works so well although friendly fire is always on and there is no way to turn it off which is a minus from me. But I played the game solo and throughout the game I was very impressed. EDF 2017 is not a cover shooter like most are nowadays, in fact, from what I understand, EDF is one of the only Third Person Shooters that is in fact, all out action. Players pick up Armor which can be used to increase players Health, they can also pick up health drops and weapons to get better chances of survival in the upcoming missions. There is a crap ton of weapons in the game and for most of it you're going to be using a shotgun or assault rifle with a rocket launcher as that is the best combo. However, later on in the game, the AI will ignore you especially those god damn Combat Ships unless you shoot at them with a weapon that can reach them, leaving the Sniper Rifle to be the only option for situations like this. This however, happens in the very last few levels so it's not that much of a big deal unless you don't know what's coming. The presentation of EDF 2017 is surprisingly good for a 2006 Xbox 360 game. The graphics are a bit on the shiny side when talking about enemies but the fact that the game's enviroment is 100% destructible is a HUGE plus. This adds strategy to the game when Ravagers are hiding out behind buildings. You can just blow the buildings up to get a shot at them although the debris might be in your way. The voice acting is one of the best things about this game. Your Storm-1 mates are encouraging as they yell "YAAAHHHH!!!!" and "EDF! EDF!" Encouraging you to do much better than you already are. Sometimes the AI for these characters are especailly good as they take out the last of the enemies if you are far away from them in a mission. However, sometimes they will not follow you at all which can lead to seriously bad moments where you need em to help you or use them as bait for the enemy. If we are talking downsides, there is a few. Pop in textures and models are apparent especially in some cutscenes and some of the game's maps are so big that it'll take you a long time to traverse from one end to the other especially if you do not have a speed bike or vehicle with you. But those are the only things that bog down an otherwise great game. EDF 2017 is a tribute to the monster/alien move genre with it's huge amount of enemies and awesome third person shooting action combat. I am now a fan of this series and cannot wait to play the next game. Ah yes, 2017. I remember that year, when aliens nearly destroyed the entire human race and in one years time, we cleaned it all up! Ahh... memories. RATING: 8.8/10
