He was a most peculiar man
He lived all alone within a house
Within a room, within himself
A most peculiar man

(Song.link for other services: Richard Cory, A Most Peculiar Man)
That these two run together in my mind, like they are doing now, is perhaps not that surprising since they lead off the B side of Sounds of Silence one after the other, in this order. (“Richard Cory” is based on the famed Edward Arlington Robinson poem reflecting on the depression of the Panic of 1893.) On the other hand, the tones could not be more different—yet in the end, both men still end up in the same place.
In American Lit in high school, we listened to the Simon & Garfunkel version of “Richard Cory” when studying Robinson’s poem, but I don’t think our teacher thought to play the next song on the album as well…
And Mrs. Riordan says he has a brother somewhere Who should be notified soon

i don't know why it just now occurred to me to do so but i checked out the simon and garfunkel corner of tumblr and wow???? amazing????? seeing people talk about songs and lyrics that i've been obsessing over since i was in middle school????? and shoutout to the people mentioning a most peculiar man as the saddest song because it really is just so heartbreakingly sad okay (but also of course i am a rock is also extremely sad and also let's just please talk about how sad that whole album is, it's so sad and reading about paul simon being depressed and lonely in london when he wrote some of them made all the sense in the world but also made me extremely sad)

Song lyrics that I’d like to use in conversation but will never the chance to:
(This list is subject to change)
“He died last Saturday”
from A Most Peculiar Man by Simon & Garfunkel
Never an appropriate time to sing this
“What’s my number?”
from Baby Driver by Simon & Garfunkel
My phone number is cemented in my memory
“Tom”
from The Only Living Boy in New York by Simon & Garfunkel
I don’t know anyone who goes by Tom
“Tom, get your plane right on time”
from The Only Living Boy in New York by Simon & Garfunkel
Even more specific
“The leaves that are green turn to brown”
from Leaves that are Green by Simon & Garfunkel
Not easily understandable enough
“Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah”
from Spring and a Storm by Tally Hall
Rude
“I see you, not too far”
from Who You Are by Tally Hall
Niche ig
“Catch me floating circles in my fish bowl”
from Saturday by Twenty One Pilots
I’m not a fish, unfortunately.

NO LITERALLY.
Just earlier today I was thinking of what Art contributed to the duo. It wasn’t song writing, because Simon did all of that. Simon was the better guitarist, and although some consider Garfunkel to be the better singer he hardly ever soloed. My dad and I literally call them “Simon and the other guy” as a joke.
But if it was true that he contributed nothing, then Simon’s solo career would have been just as good as their career together. And don’t get me wrong, You Can Call Me Al is a great song, it’s super fun, it has meaning— but it’s not Sound of Silence. It’s not The Dangling Conversation or The Boxer or Patterns or A Most Peculiar Man. Alone, Paul Simon made good music, but he never again created the magic that was The Canticle.
That’s because Art Garfunkel was the magic.
Platonically or Romantically or just musically, however you want to interpret it, those two were made for each other. Their relationship was pure magic, and it reflects in their discography—and in their solo discographies, when all their magic was gone.
my guitar teacher was complaining about art garfunkel not contributing anything. he doesnt even know he was the muse
