Saturday, 11-16-24, 7pm Pacific
'Evenin', everyone...Mr. Baggins here. I'm back with a set to soothe your achin' nerves and help ease us all into a good night. I thought we might begin the evening with our Brazilian friend, Guiomar Novaes, in a live broadcast recording from Sunday, January 29, 1950 at New York's "The Frick Collection", in an all-Chopin program, including a brilliant performance of the F-minor Fantasie. Settle back for the next hour and a half, and bask in the glow.
youtube
Next we turn to one of the more gentle and lyrical pieces by Richard Wagner. No storming Valkyries here...instead we have a Wagner in rapt devotion to his love. He wrote this piece as a present to his wife after the birth of their first child. As he wanted the piece to be a complete surprise, he had his musicians rehearse in secret, and the piece received its debut at Wagner's home. He had the musicians arrange themselves on the great curved staircase, where they awakened the sleeping Mme. Wagner with their sweet strains. Here are our friends Neville Marriner and the ASMF to do the honors.
youtube
Next we hear a piece which doesn't get a lot of airtime these days, the Symphony No. 2 "Mysterious Mountain" Opus 132, by Alan Hovhaness. Maestro Fritz Reiner and the Chicago Symphony from their landmark recording on RCA's Living Stereo label.
youtube
Here is a special treat: the great Vladimir Horowitz' historic Television Concert, shown on CBS in 1968. This is as close as we will ever get to being in the presence of this legend while at his full powers! This concert included the Op 44 Polonaise we heard this morning. Horowitz was truly at his "mature peak" in this...the slower and less thunderous Horowitz of the 1980s was still two decades away...here The Lion still roars! I hope you enjoy!
youtube
Next we hear Maestro Reiner and the band in a brilliant performance of the Ravel orchestration of Mussorgsky's Pictures At An Exhibition, from 1957, again on RCA's Living Stereo label...truly the greatest recording of this piece ever made!
youtube
And here are Maestro Reiner and the boys once more this evening, with their definitive recording of Haydn's Symphony No. 88 in G Major.
youtube
Next we hear the Piano Quintet in E-flat major, Op. 44 of Robert Schumann. Leonard Bernstein at the piano, with the Juliard String Quartet in a recording from the Columbia 30th Street Studio in 1965.
youtube
Next we hear Glenn Gould playing something BESIDES Bach! Here he is from a live Canadian TV Broadcast from 1967, playing a very young work by Richard Strauss, his "Burleske for Piano and Orchestra".
youtube
We've got space for one more selection tonight, and I thought we might hear Mme. Novaes play one of my favorite pieces by Chopin, his Berceuse, or "Lullaby".
youtube
I hope that lovely piece brought you a smile and a warm heart as you head off to dreamland. This is Mr. Baggins signing off for tonight. I'll be back at 8am Pacific with your Sunday edition of Morning Coffee Music.
Until then, dream sweet dreams, babies, dream sweet dreams.
Baggins out.

You know it’s bad when the cocreator of The Matrix thinks your artificial intelligence plan stinks. In June, as the Directors Guild of America was about to sign its union contract with Hollywood studios, Lilly Wachowski sent out a series of tweets explaining why she was voting no. The contact’s AI clause, which stipulates that generative AI can’t be considered a “person” or perform duties normally done by DGA members, didn’t go far enough. “We need to change the language to imply that we won’t use AI in any department, on any show we work on,” Wachowski wrote. “I strongly believe the fight we [are] in right now in our industry is a microcosm of a much larger and critical crisis.”
On Thursday, that crisis hit another major milestone when the Screen Actors Guild—American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA)—went on strike. Like the Writers Guild of America, which is also on strike, one of the biggest disputes was over AI. Leading up to the strike, one SAG member told Deadline that actors were beginning to see Black Mirror’s “Joan Is Awful” episode as a “documentary of the future” and another told the outlet that the streamers and studios—which include Warner Bros., Netflix, Disney, Apple, Paramount, and others—“can’t pretend we won’t be used digitally or become the source of new, cheap, AI-created content.”
A few weeks ago, I wrote about the WGA strike and its parallels with the Luddite labor movement. Like the Luddites, writers worry about new forms of automation taking their jobs, but also aren’t anti-tech hard-liners. If AI tools could be used to help writers—to, say, drum up new names for some sci-fi planet—they could serve a purpose without threatening anyone’s livelihood. If writers could be trained to use large language models as tools, that’s one thing. But if they’re used in lieu of writers, or used to write scripts that humans need to fix for lower fees, that’s a problem, the WGA argues. Ultimately, they want a say in how AI gets used in filmmaking.
Actors want that, too. But the way AI could impact their work looks very different. Unlike writers, actors can’t necessarily be trained to use those tools to produce their work—the AI was trained on them. Yes, if generative AI creates, say, a scene in a film, actors will have to be hired to give those performances, but it’s easy to see why they want protections on the use of their likenesses—and are willing to strike to get them.
Hollywood’s glitzy stars taking a stand to keep AI in check feels like a turning point, especially this week when the US Federal Trade Commission also launched an investigation into ChatGPT maker OpenAI. The FTC is looking into OpenAI’s data collection practices and its potential to give consumers bad information, but these things happening at once create a sense that AI is about more than just asking ChatGPT to write poetry or getting Stable Diffusion to draw a fish on a bicycle.
Though AI’s potential to impact human labor has been a topic of conversation for months, in recent days those conversations have begun to bubble over across industries. This week, the WGA East slammed G/O Media over its use of AI, following a Star Wars article that appeared on Gizmodo full of errors. The union called AI-generated articles an “existential threat to journalism” and noted the similarities between journalists and the striking screenwriters. Meanwhile, on Monday, comedian Sarah Silverman became the face of a pair of class-action lawsuits against OpenAI and Meta, accusing the companies of copyright infringement for allegedly training their AIs on her book The Bedwetter. Hulk actor Mark Ruffalo backed her, saying it “will most likely become a landmark case.”
Will any of this stop the rise of the bots? No. It doesn’t even negate that AI could be useful in a lot of fields. But what it does do is demonstrate that people are paying attention—especially now that bold-faced names like Meryl Streep and Jennifer Lawrence are talking about artificial intelligence. On Tuesday, Deadline reported that the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, which represents the studios, was prepared for the WGA to strike for a long time, with one exec telling the publication “the end game is to allow things to drag on until union members start losing their apartments and losing their houses.” Soon, Hollywood will find out if actors are willing to go that far, too.

Today's compilation:
Power FM Power Music 1998 Pop / Adult Contemporary / Pop-Rock / Hard Rock / Blues-Rock
Holy hell, folks. Here's something that really exemplifies some of that true, spin-the-wheel, anything-goes, compilation madness. This is a release from EMI's South Korean subsidiary, with an aesthetic that, sure as shit, presents itself as an ephemeral Now That's What I Call Music!-type of affair, but in actuality, is a hybrid slate of about half contemporary mid-to-late 90s hits from the US, UK, and continental Europe, and half a completely inexplicable assortment of songs from both the 70s and early 90s...?!?
So, a bunch of songs on this are good, but having them on the same album is definitely a total head-scratcher; like, Natalie Imbruglia's great radio pop classic, "Torn," and Radiohead's brilliantly dark and cavernous "Exit Music (for a Film)" happen to appear alongside The Knack's irresistibly catchy—and also mind-numbingly stupid—power pop smash, "My Sharona," as well as an over six-and-a-half-minute live version of Thin Lizzy guitarist Gary Moore's "Parisienne Walkways" from 1993???
But the true coup de grace here comes towards the end, and I will tell you all this much: you will *never*, in your life, *ever* be prepared enough to experience anything quite like the transition that takes place on this album between the selections of the sweet piano pop of Lou Reed's "Perfect Day" and the plainly terrible German Eurodance of La Bouche's "You Won't Forget Me." Whoever decided to wreak this havoc should really be working for the CIA or something, because you *thoroughly* fucked my head up with that brief sequence there.
And now, let's spend the rest of this post by...showing some love...to Robyn and her unfairly somewhat forgotten hit, "Show Me Love," which is *not* to be confused with the early 90s diva house jam of the same title by the similarly named Robin S. (it's all a bit confusing, I know).
Every single 90s female pop playlist that's ever been curated has always come with Britney and Christina on it, but someone who's more likely to be missing from those sets is their direct Swedish predecessor, Robyn. Robyn's claim to fame these days is as a global vocal EDM superstar, but in her younger days, she was a teen pop sensation who never really quite caught on in the States. She managed to land a pair of back-to-back top-ten pop hits between 1996 and 1997, but then quickly faded into US obscurity. However, she happened to be produced by the same Swedish teen pop stable—Cheiron Studios—that would soon make Britney into a superstar herself, and they'd also churned out hits for the Backstreet Boys by then as well.
Blond, short-haired Robyn definitely didn't present nearly as sexily as Britney would, and her lyrics weren't as playfully tempting as something like Christina's "Genie in a Bottle" either, but "Show Me Love" was still a terrific late 90s teen pop bop that predated both of those icons' own landmark debuts. And you can totally hear the smacky drum track and rhythm of "Quit Playing Games (With My Heart)," "As Long as You Love Me," and "I Want It That Way" on it too, but I would argue that it actually has a much richer, fuller, and sleeker sound than that trio of enormous Backstreet Boys hits. It has a warm and dubby bassline, great string pads, an ever-so-subtly whistling g-funky synth at certain points, and above all else, an infectiously catchy chorus. Just such an oft-forgotten midtempo pop earworm that deserves way more remembrance than it's received over the years. And same goes for Robyn's other US Hot 100 hit, "Do You Know (What It Takes)," too, by the way.
So, overall, a very strange late 90s South Korean comp here that doesn't actually have any Korean talent on it whatsoever, but is still a fun, yet seemingly very random collection of tunes. And it has one of my absolute favorite teen pop tunes of the late 90s on it too, the ever-underappreciated "Show Me Love," by Robyn.
Highlights:
Natalie Imbruglia - "Torn" Spice Girls - "Say You'll Be There" Radiohead - "Exit Music (for a Film)" The Knack - "My Sharona" Gary Moore - "Parisienne Walkways" Sarah McLachlan - "Building a Mystery" Robbie Williams - "Angels" Lou Reed - "Perfect Day" Robyn - "Show Me Love" Vanessa-Mae - "I'm a Doun"

#21: Miles Davis - Kind of Blue (1959)
Genre(s): Modal Jazz
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/fe7fde89c92dcc0dc5887255161e1341/920cee5494f14de3-52/s540x810/374e00e86a7fb115b58dc2365d81f76acc6bbeed.jpg)
Of all 1001 albums in 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, Kind of Blue might be the most heavily written about, and likely one of the most talked about as well. If someone says "hey I'm curious about jazz but don't know where to start" (or, in 2024, googles a recc chart), this is unilaterally the starting point. Kind of Blue is the Rome that all jazz roads lead to (and from!). I wouldn't say it's my favorite jazz album, and you can argue endlessly on whether it's the best, but it's without a doubt the most centrally located. The tunes are highly accessible, but possess enormous theoretical depth and showcase exceptional technical prowess from the players. And while sales numbers are far from everything, Miles drove sports cars and dated models for a reason: Kind of Blue is RIAA certified 5x platinum as of 2019, making it the best-selling jazz album of all time by an enormous margin (beating the 2nd highest, Herbie Hancock's Head Hunters, 5 times over; no, I'm not going to count the fucking Kenny G Christmas album or whatever, we're talking real jazz here).
It's also a landmark in the explosion of modal jazz, turning previous hard bop and bebop styles on their heads. You can find more compelling music theory explanations of modal jazz elsewhere (I'm confident there's an Adam Neely video somewhere that does it justice), but the short version is that it moved the focus from a more traditional "this song is in a key, play chords from that key and solo over them in the same key" approach to a more open ended approach of playing with a focus on the mode rather than the key, allowing for a much wider tonal palette for improvisation and creating a wildly different sound (you can think of modes as a both a subset and a superset of keys; they essentially rearrange a key to change the root note it starts and ends on while maintaining the same collection of notes, which in practice can dramatically change the feel of the key and allows for modulation between keys to sound more enharmonic. This is a super simplified explanation, again, go learn about the theory if you want to know more).
To me, this album is an old friend. This is one of the first albums that really made jazz click for me. Like most non-jazz listeners, I felt at the time like the bulk of jazz I heard was either dreadful old man coffee shop music or the sound of toddlers causing a directionless racket in the studio. I remember being in my bedroom as a teenager, listening to low quality rips of these tracks in the early days of YouTube, mind blown at the sounds I was hearing. It was laid back, but still had a lot of motion and technicality, and was deeply evocative. Today, so many years later, I feel the same things I felt then. Kind of Blue is one of those very rare, special albums that simply doesn't wear out. I've heard it a million times and can anticipate every note, but it's still a joy to listen to every time.
The version I'm listening to today is the 2007 Japanese SACD (another fascinating element to Kind of Blue is how radically different the various versions of it out there sound, with different mixes often completely rearranging the soundstage). This edition is one of my favorites; it's still the more modern Mark Wilder mix and benefits from the higher degree of clarity his mix brings, but it has a warmer, more laid back feel to it than most of the other iterations of his mix on various other formats. My chief complaint on his Miles mixes in general has always been that they're overly bright, to the point of Miles' trumpet often sounding harsh, and this is one of the very rare versions of the KoB Wilder mix that feels more natural to me.
I'd also be remiss if I didn't mention the quality of the personnel on this one: the sextet here is an extension of Miles' "First Great Quintet", featuring the dynamite rhythm section of Jimmy Cobb and Paul Chambers, with the impressionistic Bill Evans on piano (and his replacement Wynton Kelly on Freddie Freeloader, as Evans was mostly retired from the band at this point after burning out from the band's rigorous touring schedule), and the all-star sax section of John Coltrane and Cannonball Adderley. All of the players (with the exception of Cobb) were great bandleaders in their own right, and all were top-notch players. We'll see most (if not all) of these folks again on this list, with a few showing up later as bandleaders. This is one of the things that I've always found appealing about jazz: every week is a crossover episode. I'm forever discovering that a player I love played as a sideman on this other album, and the bandleader on that one used to play with this other guy, and so on in a web that seems to stretch out forever. Jazz is far from the only thing I listen to, but it's one of the easiest genres for me to get engrossed in on account of the constant interconnections between players (my obsession with Wikipedia and Discogs diving and biography reading doesn't help).
Also of historical interest is the fact that only a few weeks after recording the final KoB sessions, John Coltrane would return to the studio to record the legendary Giant Steps with his own band; this album, for reasons beyond any and all comprehension or semblance of good taste, has been excluded from 1001 Albums. It's laughable to omit both it and My Favorite Things, both of which are major touchstones in jazz (soloing over Giant Steps, referring to the song rather than the album here, is still a mountain that any serious jazz player will climb today during the process of mastering their instrument). And maybe it's my huge obsession with free and spiritual jazz talking here, but I think there's a strong argument for including at least one of Coltrane's freer post-A Love Supreme albums; his interplay with Pharoah Sanders is spectacular, as is the way he and his wife Alice lock in, and those albums would go on to inform all flavors of "out" jazz and experimental music to come (also, while I'm complaining, it's equally ridiculous to omit both Pharoah Sanders and Alice Coltrane from the book as bandleaders, and doing so really shows the authors' collective ignorance when it comes to any jazz that cuts deeper than surface level).
Ok, I'm done griping about the list (for now). Anyways, Kind of Blue is one of the highest pinnacles of musical achievement, yes you MUST hear it before you die. If you somehow haven't heard it, log off and go listen. You'll thank me later.
Coming up next time: we pivot back to country with the legendary Marty Robbins album, Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs (or, for the terminally online, the one with Big Iron on it 😉).

Soul Rebel Project Announces New Single “G Town Ride,” Upcoming Album and Shows
Soul Rebel Project returns with “G Town Ride,” a feel-good tribute to the island of Gloucester in Massachusetts, the reggae/rock band’s hometown. The track arrives on August 11 via VPAL Music and Dub Rockers.
“The song is meant to capture what it’s like to travel the island’s coastline,” said Mike Francis, the vocalist and a guitarist in the band. “It’s like a hometown anthem that represents where we come from and where our music is going.”
True to the theme, the single’s cover art, designed by Justin Oltesvig, bears a vibrant illustration of “Man at the Wheel,” one of Gloucester’s most iconic landmarks. Mention is also made of the “east coast island sound,” an affiliation of local musicians, engineers, and producers, with the members of Soul Rebel Project at the nucleus.
“G Town Ride” is the band’s first single from their upcoming fifth studio album Blessings Vol. 1. It follows last year’s Someday, which featured “Cherry Haze” with Anthony B and Green Lion Crew.
The band is back on the road this week with a string of performances along the east coast: Cranes Castle in Ipswich, MA on August 10; Reggae Garden in Cape Neddick, ME on August 11; and Rumsey Playfield in Central Park for VP Records & City Park Foundations’ SummerStage on August 12. Fans will be treated to live performances of “G Town Ride” on all dates.
“G Town Ride” will be available on all platforms on August 11.

KEEPIN' IT GANGSTA-FRESH ON L.A.'s EASTSIDE -- ATWATER VILLAGE, BABY!
NOTE: I used to live in Los Feliz as a kid, from the mid '90s to 2000, right next door to ATWV but no one ever told me the B. Boys were making music just a mile away from me.

"It was a clubhouse atmosphere,” says Caldato. “It was the most ideal setup that anybody could have.” Dubbed G-Son Studios, it’s where they recorded their third and fourth albums, "Check Your Head" and "Ill Communication." G-Son also became the headquarters of their record label Grand Royal, their magazine of the same name, and the Diamond-affiliated clothing label, X-Large. The steep metal staircase to its back alley entrance was used as a shooting location in the video for “Pass the Mic” the first single from "Check Your Head.""

DAD GOT7 A⇴Z HEADCANON ⇴ Im Jaebum
A ⇴ AFFECTION
Through his attention, Jaebum would be able to let you know the most how much he appreciated you. You’d often feel him curl up around your bump especially when he thought you were asleep and unaware of what he was doing.
B ⇴ BUMP
The changes that your bump went through were what fascinated Jaebum the most throughout your pregnancy. He loved to compare every single week at what size your baby would be, keeping a book especially on it. He’d measure with his arms often around your bump too, waiting each week until his hands could no longer meet as a result of your bump being so big.
C ⇴ CRAVINGS
At times, he thought your cravings were crazy, especially when you’d ask him to fetch a jar of pickles. He’d barely be able to stay in the same room as you as he hated the smell so much, but as you always reminded him, you were eating for two, and just the mention of your baby was enough to keep him in the room to keep you company whilst you ate.
D ⇴ DUE DATE
Jaebum would be calm about your pregnancy, until the week before your due date arrived. The realisation would hit him like a tonne of bricks, as he felt the pressures of the responsibility begin to weigh him down. The less mobile you became, the scarier it got for him too as you were usually so independent, seeing how hard you struggled every day, sometimes he couldn’t wait for your due date to arrive and see you as you, again.
E ⇴ EXCITEMENT
He definitely had his times when he’d try and downplay his excitement, but in reality, Jaebum was beyond excited to become a father. He’d always had a family in his plans for his long-term future but knowing that he was going to become a father with you was much more of an achievement then he could have ever seen him reaching. He’d often have to sit in disbelief that he was lucky enough to be in the position that he was.
F ⇴ FAMILY
Being an only child, Jaebum was keen to have his parents around as much as possible as it could potentially be their only experience of a grandchild too. They were protective of Jaebum as an only child anyway, and with that, they were protective of you too, but especially so during your pregnancy. Anything that either of you needed would be solved by them in a heartbeat, all you ever had to do was ask.
G ⇴ GETTING READY
He was used to organising the boys and keeping everything in check, and so Jaebum played on those skills to get ready for your baby’s arrival too. Whilst you were often flustered, he was a lot calmer and a lot more organised too. By the time you’d often composed yourself, the job would have already been sorted by him.
H ⇴ HEARTBEAT
Jaebum didn’t tend to get emotional often, but the sound of his baby’s heartbeat was enough to set him off. The two of you had often talked about how the heartbeat felt like such a landmark in pregnancy, and so when it finally happened for the two of you, an emotional reality really began to settle in for him.
I ⇴ “I LOVE YOU”
Every day, Jaebum would remind you that he loved you, but especially on the bad days that you had. When you were uncomfortable or in pain, that would be when he reminded you that he loved you the most, desperate to find the right words that would at least try and bring you some comfort whilst you were hurting.
J ⇴ JEALOUSY
If anything, the other members were jealous of Jaebum and how he’d managed to settle down rather than him being jealous of anything. They all knew he was going to be a great father, but seeing his family grow and the two of you really come together was something many of them could still only dream of. Each of them wanted to have what you had one day, not wanting to settle anything less than the happiness the two of you shared.
K ⇴ KICKS
Every kick would always take Jaebum by surprise, for some reason he could just never get used to the feeling. Each time, his eyes would dart up to you as if it was the first time that he was feeling your baby kick. Whilst you adjusted quickly to all the little movements, Jaebum would always treat it as if it were a first.
L ⇴ LABOUR
It was by far the part that he most and least looked forward to, he was never quite sure how he felt about it. The one thing he carried with him though was the advice of his mum who had encouraged him to put his feelings to one side and only focus on you. And that was what he did, throughout the entire time, he made sure to keep himself together and make sure that you knew that he was right there supporting you.
M ⇴ MORNING SICKNESS
Whilst he wasn’t someone who dealt particularly well with sickness, Jaebum knew he had to stick it out and be there for you. His face always managed to give away that he wasn’t impressed, but when you tried to tell him that you could get through it by yourself, his head would shake and only bring you closer into him for comfort.
N ⇴ NURSERY
You had free reign when it came to the nursery, Jaebum worked under your command which you loved. Whilst you could sit back, he built all of the furniture that you picked out to make your nursery the perfect spot.
O ⇴ OBSESSION
He was obsessed with the changes in your bump, Jaebum had always been fascinated by human nature, but seeing how your body adapted with every passing day truly captured his attention and interest.
P ⇴ POST BIRTH
The two of you were wrecks for the first couple of days in your little bubble. You were terrified, especially when your little one slept, the last thing either of you wanted to do was wake them up. There was a lot of tiptoeing around until the three of you became comfortable and a routine was firmly in place.
Q ⇴ QUESTIONS
Jaebum would be full of questions whenever you went to any of your appointments, sometimes his questions wouldn’t even have anything to do with your baby, but to do with technology or something else that interested him too.
R ⇴ RANDOM FACTS
Each of the members of the group had ended up surprising you with gifts before your baby arrived, their wardrobe was full and their room perfectly decorated by the time all of them were finished spoiling your baby, all secretly vying for the spot of favourite uncle to be introduced to your baby for the very first time.
S ⇴ SCANS
Jaebum kept a photo of your scan up on his wall in the studio to use when he needed inspiration. You knew that he created storyboards whenever he was coming up with lyrics, but the photo of your scan seemed like the missing piece of the puzzle that he had been missing out on all along to really finish off his songs.
T ⇴ TEST
You’d had a funny feeling for some time that you could have been pregnant, eventually plucking up the courage to ask Jaebum to buy you a test. It was just precaution, but neither of you could have expected it to come back positive.
U ⇴ ULTRASOUND
Jaebum made the time for every appointment, it never mattered how busy his schedule was, you were always his number one priority when you needed him, he was there.
V ⇴ VISITS
His parents were the first to visit the three of you, much to the disappointment of the boys. Meeting their first grandchild was just as overwhelming as the experience was for Jaebum and seeing them with his child was emotional for him too.
W ⇴ WAITING
It was only when you’d get impatient, would Jaebum get impatient, other than that, he was usually relaxed and not allowing himself to get too carried away by the situation.
X ⇴ XXXX
He would often trail kisses along your bump whenever you were having a particularly restless night. Jaebum always hoped that a kiss from him would work in the same way as a kick from your baby and keep him nice and calm.
Y ⇴ YOU
You were his best friend, the only one he ever wanted to experience fatherhood alongside.
Z ⇴ ZZZ
Despite there being many times when he was reluctant to get up, whenever you needed anything in the night, Jaebum was there to get it. After all, the sleepless nights were probably something he was going to have to get used to.

OutKast - Aquemini
Third studio album by American hip hop duo
Release Date: September 1998
12/13
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/7b16512e1c1d7d1a21b5e7e5fa3a9d2c/5eadb4e263a7c13b-b1/s500x750/adf9b01fa951bc5ad6001b377a628a3057b258ac.jpg)
Even compared to their already excellent and forward-looking catalog, OutKast's sprawling third album, Aquemini, was a stroke of brilliance. The chilled-out space-funk of ATLiens had already thrown some fans for a loop, and Aquemini made it clear that its predecessor was no detour, but a stepping stone for even greater ambitions. Some of ATLiens' ethereal futurism is still present, but more often Aquemini plants its feet on the ground for a surprisingly down-home flavor. The music draws from a vastly eclectic palette of sources, and the live instrumentation is fuller-sounding than ATLiens. Most importantly, producers Organized Noize imbue their tracks with a Southern earthiness and simultaneous spirituality that come across regardless of what Dre and Big Boi are rapping about. Not that they shy away from rougher subject matter, but their perspective is grounded and responsible, intentionally avoiding hardcore clichés. Their distinctive vocal deliveries are now fully mature, with a recognizably Southern rhythmic bounce but loads more technique than their territorial peers. Those flows grace some of the richest and most inventive hip-hop tracks of the decade. The airy lead single "Rosa Parks" juxtaposes front-porch acoustic guitar with DJ scratches and a stomping harmonica break that could have come from nowhere but the South. Unexpected touches like that are all over the record: the live orchestra on "Return of the 'G'"; the electronic, George Clinton-guested "Synthesizer"; the reggae horns and dub-style echo of "SpottieOttieDopaliscious"; the hard-rocking wah-wah guitar of "Chonkyfire"; and on and on. What's most impressive is the way everything comes together to justify the full-CD running time, something few hip-hop epics of this scope ever accomplish. After a few listens, not even the meditative jams on the second half of the album feel all that excessive. Aquemini fulfills all its ambitions, covering more than enough territory to qualify it as a virtuosic masterpiece, and a landmark hip-hop album of the late '90s.
