As airline passengers slog through a summer of rampant flight delays and cancellations, airlines are grappling with a massive post-pandemic increase in air travel demand and a long-term pilot shortage – while also prioritizing safety. Aerospace leader Airbus is betting autonomous and AI-driven commercial flight functions can bridge that gap. 

Wayfinder, a research project within Acubed, the Silicon Valley innovation center of Airbus, is developing autonomous flight and machine learning solutions for the next generation of aircraft. Its core mission is to build a “scalable, certifiable autonomy system capable of powering a range of self-piloted aircraft applications in single pilot operations.”

“Industry estimates expect passenger volume to grow from pre-COVID levels of 4 billion passengers a year to 8 billion – a little more than the current world population –  in about 15-20 years,” Airbus’ Wayfinder project executive, Arne Stoschek, told VentureBeat. “It’s a massive, massive scaling topic.” 

This means there will be more aircraft flying and more flights to manage, he explained, while at the same time Airbus and the commercial aviation industry need to keep increasing safety — which they say is a top priority — in mind. 

Autonomous functions to increase safety on Airbus aircraft

Wayfinder’s immediate goal, said Stotschek, is to develop autonomous functions to make aircraft operations safer – which can include supporting the pilot to better understand the environment and come to the right decisions. There is also ongoing discussion around single-pilot operation, meaning reducing the crew from several pilots to one, which would also mean a shift in pilot responsibility. 

“Autonomy is not a goal per se,” he said. “The main goal that we consider in the framework of technology is operational safety.”

The history of aviation, he added, is a continuum of automation – the current generation of aircraft is already highly automated and “each of those steps has substantially contributed to safety. This is the next big step.” 

Amid a pilot shortage that is forcing airlines to reduce the number of flights and raise the retirement age, Airbus’ autonomous flight efforts are already moving toward the goal of single-pilot operations. Last year, Acubed began flights in California to advance autonomous technology that will make the next redesigned narrow body aircraft capable of single-pilot operation.

“We certainly believe that the next generation of single-aisle aircraft will be single-pilot capable,” former Acubed executive, Mark Cousin, told FlightGlobal in 2020, noting that any single-pilot commercial aircraft will need advanced autonomous systems capable of taking over and landing should the pilot become incapacitated.

Gathering aircraft data is a challenge

One of the biggest challenges Wayfinder faces, said Stotschek, is dealing with the complexity of aircraft data. It requires scaling the data to reflect all types of conditions – including takeoff, landing, daytime, nighttime, snow storms and several thousands of different airports. 

“AI and machine learning technologies have to promise to provide this type of robustness, so the key is to have training and testing data,” said Stotschek. 

In an autonomous car, that is fairly straightforward with human drivers, or by purchasing high-quality annotated data. For large commercial aircraft, however, it’s a different story. 

“There are many steps you need to take in order to operate in a safe way,” he said. “So a lot of it is building the groundwork to get the ball rolling. We spend a lot of time collecting relevant data, determining what is relevant data and processing data in terms of safety certification.” 

In a blog post, Stotschek described Wayfinder’s goal this way: “We plan to observe the work that experienced pilots are doing every day, and then aggregate this data on a massive scale to train our machine learning models. As a rule, when a pilot retires, their experience is lost forever, but with our model, their contributions will endure. The historical data we gain from them will always be accessible to our AI systems, contributing to their continual learning and improvement. With this approach, we believe our AI system can eventually match the abilities of human pilots, bringing to life the business case of urban mobility and easing the strain put on pilots already in the field.”

Airbus seeks commercial viability of autonomous solutions

As Wayfinder continues to advance its ML and autonomous software solutions, Stotschek says its technologies will likely be commercially viable in the not-too-distant future. 

In 2020, he explained, Wayfinder had the opportunity to apply its ML and autonomy technologies developed in an Airbus technology demonstrator for autonomous taxi takeoff and landing.

“Since then, we have been focusing on the next steps beyond a technology demonstrator and towards a commercially viable solution, which includes aspects of scalability and the demonstration of safety,” he said. “This is a big undertaking that requires tens of petabytes of global data and encompasses all schemes and modes of operations that an aircraft is experiencing.” 

Wayfinder developed the processes and tools to create simulation runs in the order of millions, continuously improving and expanding its data, as well as testing its software against many scenarios so that it can expand the technology to any airport Airbus’ aircraft fly into, under all conditions the aircraft can experience.

Recent achievements, Stotschek added, include developing a new framework for assessing the safety and robustness of ML models that he expects significantly to improve the certification process. It received support, he said, both within and outside Airbus. 

“Our detection models also achieved very high levels of accuracy while being an order of magnitude smaller and faster than standard detection models in the industry,” he said. “Having compact and fast detection models is an important consideration for product realizations to run on on-aircraft computers.” 

Wayfinder is also setting up toolchains that will help rapidly move algorithm development to hardware-software implementation in a physical lab to hardware-software implementation on an actual aircraft, he explained. 

“The focus is to create processes that utilize the advantages of agile software development while ensuring stringent development and testing procedures mandated in our industry are followed” he said. 

From proof-of-concept to product-ready

The bottom line, says Stotschek, is that the goal is to move from a proof of concept, where Wayfinder shows AI applicable for a couple of test flights, to the realization that it’s really product-ready.

“That means it works for a global rollout. It works with the aircraft systems. It’s safe. It gets signed off by the regulatory bodies and is integrated into a product,” he said. “Once those types of core technologies are resolved, there’s a whole new world of applications and opportunities you can put on top of that. The availability of technology is just a first step in transforming the industry. That is the holy grail.”

CityAirbus is the new eVTOL being developed by Airbus' helicopter division that aims to set the stage for a new era of intra-city travel with flying taxis.

The futuristic-looking demonstrator can carry four passengers with a range of 60 miles, traveling at 75 miles per hour.

Airbus demonstrated the eVTOL in public for the first time on July 20 during a visit by a German politician to the facility in Bavaria.

Airbus' new eVTOL just took to the skies for the first time in public during a demonstration flight for a German politician.

CityAirbus, as the electric aircraft is called, is part of Airbus' vision for "flying taxi" aircraft and currently being developed by the manufacturer's helicopter division. The remotely piloted aircraft first flew independently in December, according to Aviation Today, but the July 20 demonstration flight for Bavarian Minister-President Markus Söder saw CityAirborne go airborne for the first time in front of public officials and the media, eVTOL.com reported.

Europe's leading aircraft manufacturer is among those investing in eVTOLs as a way to advance urban air mobility, a field traditionally dominated by noisy and expensive helicopters. The past few years have seen Airbus been collecting data on the new field, in part, through its Silicon Valley incubator, Acubed, which helped develop Airbus' now-defunct on-demand helicopter start-up Voom and single-pilot eVTOL demonstrator project Vahana.

Now, the new eVTOL aims to set the stage for a new era of flying vehicles.

Airbus began developing CityAirbus as a demonstrator eVTOL in 2016 with aims to create a fleet of flying taxi aircraft that can fly above traffic.

It's being developed by Airbus Helicopters and the resemblance to its existing product line shows.

It has a aditional Airbus H135 helicopter design, which has strong design similarities to the eVTOL.

But flying taxis like CityAirbus won't be replacing the helicopters that Airbus creates as the eVTOL is only capable of short hops within cities, not between them.

This electric aircraft can fly for around 15 minutes with a projected range of around 60 miles.

In a futuristic design straight out of science fiction, four ducted propulsion units will power the aircraft with two on each side and eight motors and eight propellers in total.

Eight Siemens SP200D motors offer a top speed of 120 kilometers per hour, or around 75 miles per hour, it's only slightly faster than the average car traveling at highway speeds.

The advantage, though, comes from more direct routings and flying above roadway congestion.

Going beyond its limited range would incur a lengthy recharge, which can take up to an hour until battery technology advances and can bring charge times down.

CityAirbus is "single failure tolerant," meaning it can still land normally after losing one of its propellers.

As eVTOLs are new technology, safety features like single failure tolerance will be key for consumer confidence.

The main airframe, created from a mix of metal and composites, will house four passengers with no need for a cockpit.

Airbus has been among those leading the charge in autonomous flight, namely with its self-flying A350-1000 XWB, so an autonomous eVTOL isn't far off.

CityAirbus' first flight occurred in 2019 with the past eight months seeing new developments such as untethered flight and its first public demonstration.

July saw CityAirbus perform for the first time in public with media and Bavarian Minister-President Markus Söder in attendance.

The eVTOL, registered as D-HCIA, didn't leave the Airbus facility on either occasion but the flights are important milestones on the way to certification.

The eVTOL field is becoming incredibly crowded, with Airbus facing competitors with Jaunt Air Mobility...

But with Airbus' experience in aircraft and helicopter manufacturing, eVTOLs like CityAirbus could be flying passengers before its competitors.

KOTA MALANG – Penampilan peserta Lomba Yel-Yel dan Koreografi Gumebyar Aremania Smartfren pekan kedua di arena Car Free Day (CFD) kemarin (1/9) semakin menarik. Spirit Aremania yang selama ini terkenal kreatif dan atraktif ditunjukkan oleh para peserta.

Tidak hanya dari komunitas Aremania, ada juga peserta dari Aremania licek (kecil), ibu-ibu, pelajar, instansi pemerintahan, hingga Aremania luar kota. Semua peserta berusaha menunjukkan performa terbaiknya.

Tak pelak, aksi para peserta pun mencuri perhatian para pengunjung CFD. Seperti yang disajikan Aremania Embrants, Korwil Kampung Biru Arema. Mereka membawa skuad Aremania licek yang masih TK dan SD. Penampilan mereka juga menarik. Sebab, membawa kultur Aremania era 2000-an dengan khas wajah yang dicelonteng (diwarnai).

Ibrahim Ricky, koordinator peserta dari Aremania Embrants, mengatakan, persiapan untuk lomba ini sebenarnya singkat. ”Jadi, ini belum perform yang sesungguhnya, anak-anak masih pada nervous,” kata dia sambil tersenyum.

Tim Aremania Embrants, sebanyak 25 orang. Mayoritas adalah anak-anak, kecuali yang mengiringi bass drum. Anak-anak ini beryel-yel dan berkoreografi layaknya di dalam stadion untuk mendukung langsung penggawa Singo Edan.

Mereka membawakan beberapa lagu, di antaranya Jiwa Semangat. ”Kami bawakan itu harapannya menambah kekompakan, tanpa pandang komunitas, korwil mana, karena semua Aremania itu satu,” kata guru SDN Madyopuro 6 itu.

Penampilan menarik lainnya datang dari TK Taman Indria. Namun, bukan para siswa TK ini, tapi para wali muridnya. Para ibu mencuri perhatian karena mereka tampil total dengan dandanan seperti mengikuti karnaval. ”Wali murid sangat antusias saat kami ajak ikut lomba ini,” kata Tutut Evi Murdiati, kepala TK Taman Indria.

Bagi dia, lomba ini tidak hanya sekadar untuk menggali kreativitas. ”Namun, ini juga mengenalkan sekolah kami dan yang paling penting untuk kebersamaan antara guru serta wali murid, kami adalah sebuah tim yang kompak,” kata dia. Para ibu ini juga membawakan lagu asal Papua, Yamko Rambe Yamko. ”Kami ingin menunjukkan bahwa kita Indonesia adalah satu,” pungkas Tutut.

Aremania dari luar kota juga tidak ingin kalah. Salah satunya Aremania Pembangkang87 Jember. Mereka rela berangkat dari Jember pukul 24.00 untuk bisa sampai mengikuti event yang diadakan Jawa Pos Radar Malang dan Smartfren ini.

Koordinator Aremania Pembangkang87 Jember Danu Aksadiyat mengatakan, semua sangat antusias untuk bisa ikut event ini. Sebab, meski berasal dari luar kota dan mereka punya kecintaan yang besar pada Arema. ”Dukung Arema itu sudah panggilan jiwa,” kata dia.

Penampilan yang mereka bawakan juga fresh. Aremania Pembangkang87 Jember ini membawakan yel-yel karya mereka. Ada Ho Arema, Satu Arema, Untuk Kejayaan, dan Hei Aremaku. ”Salah satu motivasi besar kami adalah agar karya kami bisa didengar saudara kami yang ada di Malang,” kata Aremania yang akrab disapa Djarot itu.

Meski belum juara, Aremania dari Jember ini mendapat kejutan dari pengusaha Ir Purnomo. ”Saya sebenarnya asli Malang, tapi kuliah di Jember dan istri orang Jember. Melihat arek-arek Jember yang cinta dengan Arema, saya jadi simpati dan trenyuh,” kata pria yang tinggal di Jalan Ijen itu. Purnomo pun memberikan uang Rp 1 juta untuk rombongan ini. ”Dulu saya dekat dengan Lucky (Acub Zainal) dan Ovan Tobing,” kata developer perumahan itu.

Selain itu, tidak kalah menarik penampilan peserta lainnya. Untuk diketahui di pekan kedua ini yang tampil di antaranya SMKN 13 Malang, SMPK Mardi Wiyata, dan Aremania Poltam (Polisi Taman) Disperkim Kota Malang.

With the number of registered NVIDIA developers having just hit 2 million, NVIDIA developers are pursuing more breakthroughs than ever.

Their ranks continue to grow by larger numbers every year. It took 13 years to reach 1 million registered developers, and less than two more to reach 2 million.

Most recently, teams at the U.S. National Institutes of Health, Scripps Research Institute and Oak Ridge National Laboratory have been among the NVIDIA developers at the forefront of efforts to combat COVID-19.

Every Country, Every Field

No surprise. Whether they’re software programmers, data scientists or devops engineers, developers are problem solvers.

They write, debug and optimize code, often taking a set of software building blocks — frameworks, application programming interfaces and other tools — and putting them to work to do something new.

These developers include business and academic leaders from every region in the world.

In China, Alibaba and Baidu are among the most active GPU developers. In North America, those names include Microsoft, Amazon and Google. In Japan, it’s Sony, Hitachi and Panasonic. In Europe, they include Bosch, Daimler and Siemens.

All the top technical universities are represented, including CalTech, MIT, Oxford, Cambridge, Stanford, Tsinghua University, the University of Tokyo, and IIT campuses throughout India. 

Look beyond the big names — there are too many to drop here — and you’ll find tens of thousands of entrepreneurs, hobbyists and enthusiasts.

Developers are signing up for our developer program to put NVIDIA accelerated computing tools to work across fields such as scientific and high performance computing, graphics and professional visualization, robotics, AI and data science, networking, and autonomous vehicles.

Developers are trained and equipped for success through our GTC conferences, online and in-person tutorials, our Deep Learning Institute training, and technical blogs. We provide them with software development kits such as CUDA, cuDNN, TensorRT and OptiX.

Registered developers account for 100,000 downloads a month, thousands participate each month in DLI training sessions, and thousands more engage in our online forums or attend conferences and webinars.

NVIDIA’s developer program, however, is just a piece of a much bigger developer story. There are now more than a billion CUDA GPUs in the world — each capable of running CUDA-accelerated software — giving developers, hackers and makers a vast installed base to work with.

As a result, the number of downloads of CUDA, which is free, without registration, is far higher than that of registered developers. On average, 39,000 developers sign up for memberships each month and 438,000 download CUDA each month.

That’s an awful lot of problem solvers.

Breakthroughs in Science and Research

The ranks of those who depend on such problem solvers include the team who won the 2017 Nobel Prize in Chemistry — Jacques Dubochet, Joachim Frank and Richard Henderson — for their contribution to cryogenic electron microscopy.

They also include the team that won the 2017 Nobel Prize in Physics — Rainer Weiss, Barry Barish and Kip Thorne — for their work detecting gravitational waves.

More scientific breakthroughs are coming, as developers attack new HPC problems and, increasingly, deep learning.

William Tang, principal research physicist at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory — one of the world’s foremost experts on fusion energy — leads a team using deep learning and HPC to advance the quest for cheap, clean energy.

Michael Kirk and Raphael Attie, scientists at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center — are among the many active GPU developers at NASA — relying on Quadro RTX data science workstations to analyze the vast quantities of data streaming in from satellites monitoring the sun.

And at UC Berkeley, astrophysics Ph.D. student Gerry Zhang uses GPU-accelerated deep learning to analyze signals from space for signs of intelligent extraterrestrial civilizations.

Top Companies

Outside of research and academia, developers at the world’s top companies are tackling problems faced by every one of the world’s industries.

At Intuit, Chief Data Officer Ashok Srivastava leads a team using GPU-accelerated machine learning to help consumers with taxes and help small businesses through the financial effects of COVID-19.

At health insurer Anthem, Chief Digital Officer Rajeev Ronanki uses GPU-accelerated AI to help patients personalize and better understand their healthcare information.

Arne Stoschek, head of autonomous systems at Acubed, the Silicon Valley-based advanced products and partnerships outpost of Airbus Group, is developing self-piloted air taxis powered by GPU-accelerated AI.

New Problems, New Businesses: Entrepreneurs Swell Developer Ranks

Other developers — many supported by the NVIDIA Inception program — work at startups building businesses that solve new kinds of problems.

Looking to invest in a genuine pair of vintage Air Jordans? Michael Hall, director of data at GOAT Group, uses GPU-accelerated AI to help the startup connect sneaker enthusiasts with Air Jordans, Yeezys and a variety of old-school kicks that they can be confident are authentic.

Don’t know what to wear? Brad Klingenberg, chief algorithms officer at fashion ecommerce startup Stitch Fix, leads a team that uses GPU-accelerated AI to help us all dress better.

And Benjamin Schmidt, at Roadbotics, offers what might be the ultimate case study in how developers are solving concrete problems: his startup helps cities find and fix potholes.

Entrepreneurs are also supported by NVIDIA’s Inception program, which includes more than 6,000 startups in industries ranging from agriculture to healthcare to logistics to manufacturing.

Of course, just because something’s a problem, doesn’t mean you can’t love solving it.

Love beer? Eric Boucher, a home brewing enthusiast, is using AI to invent new kinds of suds.

Love a critter-free lawn? Robert Bond has trained a system that can detect cats and gently shoo them from his grass by turning on his sprinklers to the amazement and delight of his grandchildren.

Francisco “Paco” Garcia has even trained an AI to help sort out his children’s Lego pile.

Most telling: stories from developers working at the cutting edge of the arts.

Pierre Barreau has created an AI, named AIVA, which uses mathematical models based on the work of great composers to create new music.

And Raiders of the Lost Art — a collaboration between Anthony Bourached and George Cann, a pair of Ph.D. candidates at the University College, London — has used neural style transfer techniques to tease out hidden artwork in a Leonardo da Vinci painting.
