And now for something, completely different...
TRYING (AND FAILING) TO OBTAIN THE DANNY PHANTOM FUNKO POP FROM TARGET
Clerk: Sorry, but all of the new Funko Pops sold out this morning.
Me: Ah damn it. Should have got here at 8 AM. (Suddenly a sinister laugh is heard. A puff of smoke later and a guy in a trench coat and fedora with a scraggly beard appears before me.)
Man: A pity really. If only you did what I did and bought all of yours immediatley in bulk. What a shame.
Me: Let me guess you’re a scalper?
Scalper: What gave it away?
Me: I used to work at Toys R Us. I know some things.
Scalper: If that is the case then you know I have a deal for you.
Me: Uh huh...do tell. (I take out my phone and start dialing.)
Scalper: I am willing to part with one of my little baubles...for a reasonable price.
Me: What you want?
Scalper: Oh a paltry sum of 100 US dollars will suffice. I only have 100 of these so do take your time deciding. (Suddenly Gomez Addams appears besides me)
Gomez: You bought up all those items so you can sell them at a ridiculous sum?!! That’s truly fiendish...quite admirable!! However, my young friend I have a better deal for you!
Me: Look Gomez, for the last time I can’t buy the moose, we have no room. I’ll take the samurai armor but thats it.
Gomez: Actually no, I was referring to THIS!! (Gomez holds up a bluray copy of “The Addams Family”) Why waste 100 bucks of your hard earned money on something you may only put on your windowsill for a few months when you can have a guaranteed fun time watching me and my family bond? It has it all--a haunted house, charming butlers and uncles, a pet lion---we even have COFFEE!!
Me: True...I DID enjoy it and since my X Box One needs repairs, I have no way to view that digital copy. But I came all this way for a Funko. I need one more item. (Suddenly, Superman floats down, holding a copy of “Superman: Man of Tomorrow” in his hand)
Sjuperman: I heard from Harley you were looking for something not Batman related.
Scalper: Oh please. Gentlemen, we both know how much he loves Danny Phantom related items. He spent $200 on a commission from Butch, this will no doubt be an easy decision for--
Me: Sweet. (I stuff the bluray movies into my bag as the Scalper looks on in shock)
Scalper: But...but...
Me: Oh by the way, I sent a text to a couple of associates of mine. They would like to have a word with you.
Scalper: Uh...(The Scalper looks behind him to see standing with his arms folded is Danny Phantom himself along with Ember and Sam)
Danny: So...YOU’RE the reason why I can’t even have my own Funko without shelling out a fortune.
Ember: We wanna have a few words with you. And by 'words' we mean our fists and your face.
Scalper: Perhaps I can offer you a 10% discount?
Danny and Ember: NO. (They proceed to beat the hoohah out of him)
Superman: I should do something...but I think I can let this go.
Me: Indeed.
Sam: So, Mr. Addams...HUGE fan, can I get your autograph?!
Gomez: But of course! And my daughter Wednesday would like to exchange poems with you! (Wednesday appears with a huge book)
Wednesday: At least something interesting came from this madness.

Vacation-Staycation Eternal Blu-ray Catch-up! Okay, I'm ending the posts with these, even if I didn't watch during my vacation time technically, they're still part of the eternal catch-up, and 30 is a neater number of chapters... [Speaking of which, for any interested, this whole thing amounted to 22 posts, 30 "chapters", and a grand total of 44-46 movies, depending how/what you count, so let's just say 45 movies.] 🎞️ Chapter 30: A Fistful of Dollars For a Few Dollars More 🎬 Finishing this whole run with these two immortal "spaghetti" western classics, that helped popularize the genre, just released on 4K. Also included a pic of the full trilogy, though the 4K of the final and best of them (The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly), was already out for a while. In any number of posts over the years I've already talked someone extensively about these films, but suffice to say, I'm *very* excited to have them all on 4K, and what I watched thus far looks very promising, transfer wise. Capone Amazon Prime Review
Al Capone is one of the most notorious gangsters in the history of American crime. Not only did he rise to prominence during the prohibition era, but at the peak of his power, Capone almost ran the city of Chicago. As many know, the gangster was eventually arrested for tax evasion. Now, ‘Capone‘ tells us about the later stages of his life, after the notoriety was stripped away and banal anonymity remained. It paints a bleak picture of a man who was once larger than life, showing that crime does not pay. Curious to find out where you can stream the movie? We have got you covered and will walk you through the film’s plot.
What is Capone About?
The story picks up after Capone is released from prison. He is let out at 47 when his mind is rotting due to syphilis, and he’s no longer considered a threat. The plot follows his life in the year before his death at the age of 48. We see how he relocates to Palm Island in Florida and is under FBI observation.
While many believed he was faking his mental illness, we see Capone plagued by the horrors and violence of his past. After a physical confrontation with his wife, she orders his bodyguards to keep everyone away from him. Alone with his thoughts, Capone’s mind devolves further until he reverts to a childlike state. He meets an ignominious ending as his family changes his name after his death, and the $10 million he had allegedly hidden is never recovered.
Is Capone on Netflix?
Netflix has a fantastic collection of crime movies, and while you cannot stream ‘Capone’ on the platform, do check out Martin Scorsese’s latest gangster saga, ‘The Irishman,’ instead. Much like ‘Capone,’ the film deals with the banal ending that awaits the supposedly glamorous life of crime led by members of the mafia.
Is Capone on Hulu?
Hulu does not have ‘Capone’ at the moment, but the platform does have an impressive roster to cater to everybody’s tastes. You can check out ‘Goodfellas,’ which is based on a true story. Yet another masterful offering from Scorsese, the film chronicles the rise of Henry Hill and the eventual brush with the law, which forces him to retreat into a life of anonymity in witness protection, far from the glory of the mob outfit he ran with, in younger days.
Is Capone on Amazon Prime?
Amazon Prime subscribers cannot stream ‘Capone’ as is, but the platform has other provisions in place. You can purchase and stream the movie. Check it out here.
Where Can I Stream Capone Online?
Despite the intended theatrical release, the coronavirus related lockdown has thrown a wrench in many a plan. Accordingly, ‘Capone’ has released on VOD services, so you can always purchase and stream the movie. Check it out on Vudu or FandangoNow.
Is Capone Out on DVD and BluRay?
Unfortunately, ‘Capone’ is not available on DVD or BluRay right now, but we expect it to come out around November 2020. At this moment, no preorder options are available, but we strongly suggest you avail the VOD options if you want to catch the movie immediately.
Can I Stream Capone Online For Free?
Sorry freeloaders, but you cannot stream ‘Capone’ without paying for it at the moment. Moreover, we urge all our readers to pay for the art they consume.

Tolerance Project in Lockdown Mode Updated
Behind closed Doors Tolerance Project in Lockdown
The Doctor and the Tolerace Blog
Hello there like the rest of the country The Tolerance Project is now in lockdown mode due to the Corna Virus outbreak hence the lack of updates to keep myself busy I have been watching TV and doing a lot of reading Last week I rewatched the classic Doctor who episode Caves of Andronzani which was the last episode to feature Peter Davison and features the now classic regeneration sequence that episode featured a famous line which also gave me a title for our Tolerance Blog ( you can watch the regeneration sequence here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xH1UPBxPFQs
I am fan of the good Doctor and this would not be the first time he would appear in the Tolerance Blog he appeared again when I talked about Douglas Adams for our must recent Blog article on Disability in the media Don’t put your son on stage Mrs Brown I started the blog with this quote “The late, great writer, Douglas Adams, once said that good ideas and old ideas don’t die, they just gather dust on the shelf” Douglas was in fact talking about his lost Doctor who story Shada orignally shelved in 1979 not my blog.
Whats now Ironic about this quote is that Shada has now become one of the published stories in Doctor who history what with the video DVD and Bluray releases of the story it was also released as a novel by Gareth Roberts and as an audio play by Big Finish starring Paul Mcgann Lalla Ward and John Leeson
You can read about Shada here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shada_(Doctor_Who)
I also included the classic companion Sarah Jane Smith played the late great Elizabeth Sladen who was companion to the 3rd and 4th Doctor between 1973 and 1976 she also returned to 21st Century Doctor who partnering David Tennant and Matt Smith as well as getting her own Spin off show with the Sarah Jane Smith Adventures When talking about my own employment experiences in the first part of gives us a job
The Master the evil Timelord from Galifrey will also turn up in the forthcoming blog Breaking the Bank all this goes to show that I really do have too much time on my hands ha ha lol
The Good the Bad and the great
I read this morning on the BBC website that the film composer Ennio Morricone had died at the age of 91 in Rome see here https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-53305397 he wrote a lot of great film scores including the soundtrack for one of my favourites The Oscar winning film The Untouchables in 1987. His most famous film scores are probably the ones he wrote in the 1960s for a trilogy of westens for Sergio Leonie titled a fist full of Dollars for a few Dollars and of course The Good the Bad and the Ugly This trilogy made a star out of Clint Eastwood who played the man with no name The main theme from the film was so popular it was released as a single When it was re-recorded by Hugo Montenegro it was a number 1 in the UK and a top ten single in the US I mention that one because we used it on the Tolerance film soundtrack to highlight blue badge abuse if you need a reminder of theme you can find it here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AFa1-kciCb4

Fast Five
I am having slightly better turnaround times at getting to my latest installment covering the Fast and Furious franchise with today’s film being 2011’s Fast Five (trailer). The rousing success of the fifth film served as the blueprint for all the films following it until this day. I went in with no fears that it would still hold up well nearly a decade later. As mentioned in my entry for Fast & Furious, the films were starting to evolve from the core trilogy that were primarily about late night car tuner culture and street races and shift more towards implementing these rides in elaborate heists. Fast Five goes all in on this concept and minus a few subtle callbacks throughout the film, ditches the street race focus of the first three films entirely. Now the heists are at the forefront and became larger than life where director Justin Lin went on to state in the commentary he learned to ‘embrace the ridulous-ness’ and go all out with fantastical stunts that I recall leading to many popped eyes in my initial viewing in the theater.
Fast Five sees Dom (Vin Diesel), Bryan (Paul Walker) and Mia (Jordana Brewster) reunite in Brazil after freeing Dom from custody at the end of the previous film. They meet up with their old pal, Vince (Matt Schulze) who we have not seen since the original film. The four of them group up for a job involving a train that has some spectacular stunts to kick things off. During the job they discover there is more than meets the eye and they encounter the antagonist of the film by the name of Reyes (Joaquim de Almeida). The four decide to assemble a team to take down Reyes and claim his millions of dollars stashed away in a vault. And thus we now have the new framework for the series where ‘Team FF’ are the ultimate pros at big jobs and work together in the name of ‘FAMILY’ to take down evil-doer crime lords. The team they assemble is a all-star roll call of supporting players from previous films including Roman (Tyrese Gibson) & Tej (Ludacris) from 2Fast 2Furious, Han (Sung Kang) from Tokyo Drift, and Gisele (Gal Gadot), Leo (Tego Calderon) & Santos (Don Omar) from Fast & Furious. To cover their bases of a gang having the prerequisite computer wiz, Tej stepped up and added pro-hacker to his resume aside from fun-party-rides guy from the second film we knew him as. They receive some unexpected assists from federal agents Hobbes (The Rock) and Elena (Elsa Pataky). They are the surviving two members of a squad of federal agents (who the Giant Bomb commentary track consistently refers to as ‘Team Wildlands’) sent from the USA to track down Dom, Bryan & Mia and haul them back to America until their squad mates met their demise from an ambush sent out from Reyes. Now with a common enemy and mutual respect between the two after an adrenaline-pumping, full-on red meat, wall-pouncing, show-stealing duel, the two alphas align in a fist-bumping moment for the ages when Hobbes & Elena help out Team FF.
Somehow, director Justin Lin managed to make this ensemble cast gel together all at once. Nearly every team member has a few pivotal scenes throughout where the spotlight is on them. I was fully invested when the team is formed by the second half and is going through the stages of setting up the ultimate end-scene safe heist. Watching them all flawlessly work together and overcome every obstacle Reyes threw at them was a ride I was thrilled to tag along in. It reminded me why I loved (some) of the Ocean films and enjoying the journey of planning everything out and trying to piece together all the little things that pay off when the heist plays out. When it comes time for Team FF to swipe Reyes’ safe from his seemingly impenetrable fortress, Fast Five did not disappoint. I recall seeing this in the theater for the first time and simultaneously thinking this is the most unrealistic way to steal a safe but also loved how brazen Lin was to simply go for it and own this scene and take you on the ultimate thrill ride unlike any other heist film before it. It was like Lin stated earlier, just roll with the balls-out nature of the film and good times will be guaranteed. As with the previous films I have been re-watching, I watched this with the commentary track from the Giant Bomb crew. Aside from them cracking me up with their ‘Team Wildlands’ nickname, their commentary has lots of fun watch-a-long insight such as regretting bringing Coronas to the viewing party after realizing Fast Five is the first film in the series not to feature them, ironic love for Paul Walker’s acting prowess and being in constant disbelief at Ludacris’s newfound tech skills. Vinny never saw the film before so hearing his reactions to the bigger stunts was a riot. I also listened to Justin Lin’s solo commentary on the BluRay and he is a pro at mastering solo commentaries with nonstop facts about the cast, crew and filming process. Some highlights include hearing the love he got from doing overseas press tours on the fourth film was what brought him back for the fifth, pointing out the tiny additions to the extended cut and being careful on where to film in Brazil.
Aside from the commentary, there are 12 bonus features totaling 75 minutes on the BluRay. About half of them are must-see. Usually most bonuses breaking down stunt scenes I am accustomed to in a lot of action films and I get kind of tone-deaf to them, but with Fast Five’s ambitious stunts I got a lot out of the bonuses detailing how they filmed the opening train heist and closing safe heist. Hearing how they got a mini-truck inside to drive the safe around was something else. There is also a recommended extra, On Set with Justin Lin, where Lin is shown behind-the-scenes hustling for the ultimate shots of what seems like a inconsequential scene from an earlier part of the film, but to see how Lin got it all come together to get the very best out of everyone was simply awesome. I got to see some of that too in the extra Dom vs. Hobbes where they dissect that fight scene and hearing how Lin halted production for two hours to hear Vin Diesel make his case for the inclusion of ONE MOVE in that entire fight goes to show the passion the cast and crew has for the brand. Overall it is a tremendous smattering of extra features to dive into! Fast Five is the reason why the franchise has been a mainstay in pop culture since that one hit theaters. If you have managed to elude the mega-popular brand all these years but have been pondering on giving one of them a chance, then make sure it is Fast Five. The later films are still good, over-the-top awesome heist films, but Fast Five is easily my runaway favorite of the series. Is the DCEU in trouble, i don't think so by looking at the stats!
Contrary to popular belief, i think all in all DCEU will emerge as the winner in the long run !
A few things based on some hard facts and numbers rather than opinion and of course, I do point some speculation, which can be perceived as my own opinion in regards to the success of the DCEU or DC Films.
We have all been witness to internet false news, scoops that don’t turn out true, negative articles towards the DC Extended Universe. So far it sounds like a bunch of old man that do not want to see Super hero movies with a deeper script than punch, get punched, fight back!
It started with Man of Steel back in 2013, which critics call divisive, but monetary the movie is the biggest Superman solo grossing movie, now in terms of sold seats Superman 1978 might take the crown, but back in 1978 we didn’t also have piracy on the internet, BluRay/DVD sales, streaming etc. , so let’s just assume that a movie did what it did and then VHS sales were hard to track due to the lack of internet, tracking sites and tools for us mortals to use and find how much it generated after being released on home entertainment. I am sure that someone at Warner’s knows how much it did in VHS sales, but I personally don’t have this info. Basically, coming to the conclusion that both movies did fairly good in their respective times and conditions of release.
Man of Steel finished it’s run at 668 Million USD worldwide and added another 67 Million in DVD sales, that’s it not including the money it made from streaming and TV rights to various giants like Netflix. Now with all that being said, a Rotten Tomatoes score of 55 % is a bit of a head scratcher to me, since this movie has great and complex story, amazing visuals and one of the best musical scores out there for a superhero movie, along with TDK trilogy, Superman 78, Spider-man original trilogy, Batman 89 etc. You can like it or hate it, still the movie launched the DCEU and made many people that laughed at the idea of a Superman movie in 2013, after Superman Returns performed not especially high for WB, watch out for his next movies.
Now Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad the next movies in line to come out from the DCEU were bashed critically by the same RT reviewers, even worse than MOS, again the movies both performed very good in the Box Office, enough so that combined with Wonder Woman, it gave them enough money to go past the critically beloved MCU both domestically and internationally on average gross per movie. Have in mind that Marvel the teacher’s pet and favorite, is now a franchise associated with success on critical and financial terms, where there is turmoil just as much as any studio, directors leave, writers leave, people get replaced in parts without re-boots etc., but lacks the same negative press 24/7.
What I look at today is the more facts versus hear say, facts are that currently, the DCEU is doing the following average numbers per movie domestically $339,513,662 Million and internationally $776.500.000 Million, compared to Marvel’s Cinematic Universe $291,576,450 Million domestic average per movie gross and $743.700.000 Million. So, all said and done, if DC keeps on giving in the same financial aspect, we can expect the average gross per movie to remain in DC’s favor, I don’t see how Justice League doesn’t do 850 M plus or much more ( 1 Billion is the magic number) and I from what we have seen and heard about Aquaman, I think it is safe to say it will be really easy to reach that 800 M mark, which is all it needs for the trend to continue in 5 movies, reaching a good 5 Billion in 6 movies. For comparison, MCU’s first 6 generated around 3.8 Billion and they all were highly praised.
Now here is where things get interesting, we are waiting for a Batman movie by Matt Reeves, who made an Ape franchise profitable and this is something that we have seen lately, where anything non superhero related tanking at the BO, so expect The Batman to be a smash for WB. It’s possible that he gets back to his Billion dollar days as seen previously with Nolan’s last two movies, and as reported WB/DC are looking to do a trilogy. So we might be looking at a 3 Billion franchise there alone, something no Marvel solo character has done so far. Also, coming up is a Suicide Squad 2, a movie which in the hands of a great director like Gavin O'Connor could overperform the first one (made 745 M USD worldwide without China). So with a critically loved sequel, a better script and a great villain, this is another contender for the 800 M + club. Then we have Wonder Woman 2, the first movie is now closing in at 819 M worldwide gross, which we already know the sequel will beat as internationally people didn’t know the character as well as they do other properties from the 90s. We know superheroes can move pass 400 M USD worldwide once they are established to the local audience, so with WW2, i personally expect a 850 M + worldwide gross or more.
Then we have the Flash movie that will feature a Flashpoint story, and probably will feature some additional characters like Wonder Woman and others, so you know with the popularity of the TV show we are in for a winner here, another possible 800 M + movie is a no brainer. Batgirl by Joss, I would say, based on female lead action movies resurgence and adding the fact that DCEU fans will turn up to see it, it’s possible that this will be a 600 M + movie or least have this to be its finish number worldwide. Joker origin movie with Martin S. producing, that could be huge, depending on who they cast and the look and feel of the movie, Nightwing is another movie that by associating itself with the Bat world is a 650 M + optionally, Gotham City Sirens with a brand new Catwoman another one that can easily do 650 M +. Black Adam and Shazam, based on the fact one has the Rock and the other will be a more fun kid oriented flick, both can overperform, but at their lowest we are looking at 600 M +, then we have a Green Lantern Corps movie, which if done right can be a contender for those upper 800-900 M + BO numbers, if done right! So, with the DCEU ranking in good money, and possible sequels for Justice League and Batman, Wonder Woman fighting for that billion spot, I am definitely not worried for them.
On the other hand, Marvel are still protected by the fake news media, and their whole YouTube movie talk family, taking it easy on all their movies by default. But facts are Spider-man Homecoming (who’s profit went to Sony not Disney just FYI) is considered a success, but all I see is a Spider-man movie featuring the biggest seller in the Marvel family Iron Man that is still behind Spider-man 3 which was terrible! Also let’s not forget that Spider-man’s IP (Intellectual Property -all rights to merch and games etc.) is 3 times more valuable than Superman and Batman combined, so when MCU fans attack Batman V Superman for underperforming at 832 Million, then considering popularity, a single Spider-man movie should be easily a 1.5 + Billion dollar movie following that logic right?
I see Inhumans (already cancelled by ABC for a 2nd season) and Iron Fist holding the records for lowest rated superhero shows and movies with 7% and 17 % and I see a Defenders show in Netflix that didn’t perform better than any of the solo stuff on Netflix in terms of streaming numbers. Also, all MCU movies featuring the Avengers like: Marvel’s the Avengers, Age of Ultron and Civil War have performed with a 100 Million or more less in the BO over time, so if Infinity War doesn’t manage to rake in more than the original movie back in 2012, then the budget of the movie will kill it financially. People try to compare it to how Star Wars The Force Awakens performed in the BO* (BO- Box office), but that movie was 40 years in the making since the first original hit cinemas in 1977, and no one considers the prequels (episode 1 to 3) as successful and they didn’t really feature the original cast. So with that being said, with MCU giving people 2-3 movies per year, I think their audience has been solid but, not really taking them past a billion very often, so lets say this movie is a bigger event that The Avengers back in 2012, should be able to make 1.6-1.8 Billion right? Well, the only thing we haven’t seen from them is a full cast assembly and a good villain, the first is promised, the second is very doubtful for now. Anyway, I don’t think Infinity War will win general audience, with a plot about magic stones as much as MCU fans think, and I don’t think a pink giant will be a villain that will have regular movie goers running to the cinema, but it might catch up to the original, or do a “Iron Man 3” numbers 1.3 B USD. It is not easy doing Avatar or Star Wars numbers, Avatar at the time it came out, had a first ever 3D movie experience feel to it, not a lot of people went because they like sci fi as much, but more or less to see an event, this feel is now gone and I don’t expect the follow ups to score this pay day again.
You have each individual star in that movie from the entire MCU line up, plus additional actors for villains and supporting cast showing up, and we know RDJR charges a minimum of 15 M just to show up, not mentioning the backend, then we have Chris Evans who might have gotten 300,000 USD for the first Captain America movie, but since Winter Soldier I doubt that he gets paid even close to that number, he is getting around the 10 Million for sure, and you can assume Scarlet, Mark, Chris H. etc., are not far away as numbers, so a movie that is spending close to 200 + Million on salaries and another 200 M on the movie itself or more, should be aiming for a 1.6 B at least.
This year Marvel escaped the long stick of the critics, since they all love them so much, but we know GOTG Vol 2 was just not good at all, Spider-man was not the best movie of the franchise, it managed to save itself with the MCU origin story and Iron Man crammed in it, but was pretty basic Spider-man storytelling and Thor 3 is up with a movie advertising itself as a Thor vs Hulk scenario, which from the trailers we already know, will not happen for more than 10 minutes.
So while you little bloggers point to the downfall of DCEU and call it as such, all i see is its rise and the decrease in attention for MCU movies slowly and effectively by general audiences, even FOX are doing more interesting things with X Force, New Mutants and Deadpool 2. Even with critics pretending that movies coming from the MCU in the style and quality of the Incredible Hulk, Thor 2, Iron Man 2, Hulk (which is only referred to as non MCU, but actually continues the story in TIH as it left off with different actors), Ant-man and other super basic movies that have 0 re-watch appeal, I can tell, that if Marvel/Disney don’t start putting 110 % effort in their solo movies and stop relying on their team up’s to carry water for their other movies, they will lose the box office very soon. Not to mention that Avengers 3 and 4 have 1 year time in between them and will most likely leave audiences waiting for the full conclusion, which might leave some people pissed off.
All in all, they might perform good, considering it will be an all-out war and someone in the MCU might die for real this time, and I don’t mind if they perform good, not at all. Still I just don’t see how people would come and see your movies for over 10 years when you don’t evolve with them (your audience). Most of the fans of the MCU are young guys (of course not only, it’s all ages and genders, but they do have a lot of kids as fans as well) and they haven’t stopped growing, just because Marvel has at some point. When they reach that 25 + age range, these films will lose some of their appeal to them.
See you in all in cinemas across the world on November 17th for the first ever DC shared universe event that has the entire League united!
Geek on!

I mean... it's Halle Fucking Berry... (a Kidnap Movie review)
So I went and saw Kidnap with Halle Berry earlier today. You’re not going to see this movie, but you probably SHOULD. Let me make it clear. This is not a very good movie. I’m not going to lie to you and tell you it is a good movie. It’s not. Let me stress that. It is low on plot, the cinematography is sub-standard. The editing is bad. There’s not much character development. It is ultimately pretty pointless and there are at least half a dozen movies playing in a cinema near you that are better than this. Do I know how to sell these things or what? I’m even going to spoil what little plot there is to the film in this review. It doesn’t matter. Keep reading and then go see it anyway… and I’ll tell you why.
First, I need to rewind a bit and talk about why I decided to see and review so many movies this summer. There are a couple reasons. First of all, I have a movie problem. That is to say, I watch a lot of movies. I spend a lot of money on DVDs and Blurays, I go to the movies a lot! I’m not a rich man… so it’s maybe a problem. I like the motion pictures. I don’t bet on the ponies. I don’t do heroin. I don’t go to hookers. Let me have this… okay?
That’s why I go to the movies a lot, but lets talk about why I’ve been reviewing them so much. A year or so ago, I started writing reviews of some of the movies I saw… just when I had random thoughts on them. I didn’t want to just write “two thumbs up” or “this is awesome.” I only wrote about them when i had something to say. Maybe it’s not obvious because I curse so fucking much, but usually my reviews have some little nugget of literary or cultural theory in them. Basically, in my spare time I like to still do what I do for a living. Partly because I’m a nutcase. But also because I enjoy it. Most of the stuff I was writing about last year were “geek movies.” Your superhero movies and your star wars and the like. Then a couple people started saying they’d like to know my take on other stuff. At first I was a little resistant. I knew I wouldn’t get as much attention for non-blockbusters and at the end of the day, I’m a press whore. Why bother wasting my time writing about things if no one was going to pay attention, right?
Then I started seeing something interesting happening. I got into a couple of random online arguments about the lack of diversity in movies. Why aren’t there more roles for women, especially older ones? Why aren’t there more roles for people of color? Why aren’t there more LGBTQ roles. You get the picture. And at the end of the day, this is true. There is severe underrepresentation in film for non-straight white dudes. This is unequivocally true. There is UNDERREPRESENTATION. But there is not NO representation.
And that’s when I started seeing something interesting that was really happening. I started following a lot of conversations about geek media and blockbusters and seeing a lot of people complaining about whitewashing in films but also people calling for more “Othered” roles. No one ever calls them Othered roles, because that’s an academic word. But that’s what they’re asking for. “Why is Matt Damon in a movie about the Great Wall of China?” “Why is Scarlet Johansson staring in Ghost in the Shell?” “Why can’t there be a female Doctor Who (which there now is)?” “Why can’t their be an Asian Iron Fist (which there isn’t… and I don’t want there to be, but that’s a story for another time)?” And then in the cases where someone did try to make a more diverse project, I started seeing people complain that it wasn’t good enough. “It’s great that they’re making a Wonder Woman movie, but why’d they have to pick a skinny white model instead of a woman who was tough looking?” “It’s great that they chose a female Doctor Who, but did she have to be white? Maybe next time pick an asian trans woman.” At one point I got into a conversation with someone who tried to convince me that “the world would have been a much better place if a young Denzel Washington would have been cast as Superman back in the 1970s instead of Christopher Reeve.” I said no… it wouldn’t. It would have ruined Denzel’s career (again, an argument or another time).
So I started paying more and more attention to these complaints. As liberal as I am, I’m also pragmatic. I agree with the premise behind those complaints, but I understand the rationality behind why they’re not just fixed too. At the end of the day, show business is still a business. Movies only matter if you can sell tickets to them. And I wanted to understand why other people don’t seem to get that. The going theory that I heard most often is that “it’s because there’s no options. We can’t go see movies with non-straight white dudes because no one makes them.”
Bullshit!
A few months ago, the Academy gave the Best Picture Award to a movie about the struggles of being black and queer. It’s called Moonlight. No one went to see it.
I love a good blockbuster popcorn movie . When I decided I was going to go to the movies at least once a week this summer, I decided I didn’t want to review JUST superhero movies. Even though I knew the blockbusters would be what people were mostly interested in. But since I like other movies besides just the big blockbuster popcorn movies, and since none of you are paying me to go see them, I figured rather than limit myself to them, I’d see the ones that I wanted to see and then on other days I’d see things that just looked interesting to me. Things that were different. And I’m glad I did. Because if my reviews got even one person to see The Big Sick, Baby Driver, or Girls Trip, then it was all worth it (and really, if you did go see one of these movies just because I said, so then I wish you’d let me know. Because again, I’m a press whore. Also tell your friends, goddammit… I’m providing a valuable service. We whores are like that…
ANYWAY!!!! It’s not that there are NO roles outside of straight white dudes. It’s that they don’t get to be in the big movies. The reason Matt Damon and Scarlett Johansson are in The Great Wall and Ghost in the Shell is that those aren’t very good movies. Sometimes when you have a not a very good movie, you toss a bankable movie star in it so that people will go see it anyway. It really doesn’t matter what Matt Damon is in. In the last decade, he has made Jason Bourne movies, Oceans movies and the Martian. And people love those movies…and great. He also bought a fucking zoo (with Scarlet Johansson, no less). And you know what? People still went to go see it. Because it’s Matt Damon and someone will give it a shot even if the concept is really shitty. It just doesn’t matter. By all accounts fans were, at best lukewarm on the most recent Bourne film. They went and saw it anyway. It made $415million on a $120million budget ($26M of which was Damon’s salary). Have you ever seen Lucy with Scarlet Johansson? It is… not good. It’s not horrible… but it’s not by any reasonable usage of the term, “good.” It’s a movie where ScarJo gets to run around and kill people with her brain for 90 min. If that’s what you’re looking for then fine, but it doesn’t even remotely make any sense and has no narrative consistency. Like not even a little. The acting is subpar. The fights aren’t great. The special effects are cheesy. And she’s never even naked in it. But it doesn’t matter. People saw it anyway. It made $463million on a $40million dollar budget. And because they did, ScarJo and Damon get shoved into every movie. It’s all about return on investment.
This week’s big blockbuster opening is The Dark Tower. I’ve never read any of the books, so I’m not a built in fan, and other than Idris Elba’s voiceover, the trailers really didn’t look any good (and the reviews are kind of backing that up) so I had no desire to go see it. Again, totally willing to review it… you know… like if someone paid me… whore and all that… What I really wanted to see this week was Detroit, but Steph wants to see that too, so I’m waiting for her. So I decided to go take a chance on Kidnap at a $5 matinee, because even though it didn’t look super good, the trailer kind of intrigued me. Besides, I figured if nothing else, it had Halle Berry in it. And if nothing else, that’s always worth at least a look. Why? Because she’s Halle Fucking Berry, that’s why!
This is what I like to call an extended trailer movie. Have you seen the trailer? If not, here it is.
Now you know the whole story. That’s it. That’s the whole movie. The film is exactly what you see in the trailer for 95 minutes instead of two. Halle Berry is a single mom. Five minutes into the film someone kidnaps her son, so she hops into her car and chases them for the next ninety minutes. She will stop at nothing to get back her child. That’s it. That’s all there is. Nothing else! Spoiler alert, she gets him back at the end. Surprised? I didn’t think so. Now you know everything. Nothing else happens — seriously! There are literally no surprises.
And it’s fine. It really is. It’s not super engaging, but I liked it. It doesn’t have the best production value. No one in it is really interesting. There’s no reason for this movie to exist at all. But it’s kind o fun. If it sounds like you recognize the story, it’s because you do. It’s exactly the same plot as Taken (which one? all of them). But Taken was exactly the same movie as Ransom. In fact this exact movie has been made like 100 times. The twist in this case is that unlike Liam Neeson, she doesn’t have a particular set of skills. She’s just a mom. Don’t fuck with a mom’s kid! That’s the movie. That’s it!
As I said, there are problems with it. The production value is super low for a Hollywood release like this. It’s only $20million. And sometimes you can tell. Not only is the camerawork, directing and film editing substandard, there are some clear choices made to conserve budget. Given the concept, one might expect that there’s going to be a lot car crashes during a movie that essentially has an hour long car chase. And there are. You see them in the trailer. But crashing cars is expensive. So there’s lot of times where car crashes happen and you just don’t see them. Cars will swerve, you’ll see Berry look out the window and then turn away only to hear a “car crash” that is never actually shown. This happens SEVERAL TIMES.
But it’s not awful. The thrill of the chase is there (I mean, all it is is a chase). The simple storyline gives you a reason to care (a cute little kid is kidnapped). The editing and camerawork aren’t really any worse than Taken (I mean, I love those movies… but the camerawork is shit… and 27 cuts to get Liam Neeson over a fence?!?!? are you shitting me?). In fact, the idea is interesting… and for all its faults, Halle Berry is an Academy Award winning actor (something neither Damon or ScarJo can say) for a reason. She’s good in this… she’s quite believable. It’s not her best role ever, but it certainly isn’t her worst. The woman made Catwoman for HOVA’s sake, and she’s in Movie 43, which is so abysmal that I’d be amazed if anyone reading this other than me has ever seen it. She’s a good actress and at 50 still beautiful enough that even with Hollywood sexism she can play a believable action star (Neeson was 56 in the first Taken). Most of the faults of this movie could have been fixed an additional $20million of budget.
Only that’s never going to happen because no one is actually interested in seeing movies like this starring black fifty year old black women, no matter what their acting pedigree. And there is the flaw. Do you know how I know? Because the film is also basically the same movie as The Call, which also starred Berry, four years ago, and at $68million dollars, it was considered a blazing success. It far outperformed expectations., and is still way under what a flop makes with a bankable white actor.
At a 40% on Rotten Tomatoes, the film has mediocre-at-best reviews. But so does pretty much every film in this genre including Taken (at 58%). In fact, the Taken sequels are at 21% and 11% respectively. The Call made 44%. They’re all the same movie. The concept just is what it is. This is not going to win any awards. But it turns out I kind of like car chase movies and kidnap movies and for 95 solid minutes, I was definitely entertained.
So if you’re a fan of the kidnap movie genre or the car chase movie genre, then this is pretty much exactly what you’re looking for. Minus a few car explosions — But with the addition of a black actress protagonist over the age of thirty.
So I ask you, what is it you really want? Diversity or explosions?
★★☆☆☆+💁🏾 (2 out of 5 stars, plus Halle Fucking Berry!)

A Journey through the Entire Kurosawa Filmography [from My Current Approximation of Least to Most Favorite] 🎥 Part VII: Best of the Best Chapter 2 - Incredible Incalculable Influence 🎞️ 4. The Hidden Fortress [1958] A fun, exciting, & funny samurai adventure film, the Hidden Fortress is of course well documented as one of the primary inspirations for Star Wars. It is also Kurosawa's 1st film in widescreen format, & thank goodness, because it is glorious. 3. Sanjuro [1962] If looking at the whole of movie making process, history, technique & impact, there are others that may've been higher on the list than where I ultimately placed them (Ikiru, Ran, & Rashomon, for instance), but just the sheer enjoyment (as well as the undeniable style & influence) of these firmly lands them near the very top. Sanjuro & Hidden Fortress's order will likely continue to jump around some, but I will always stand by their quality as among the best samurai films ever. 2. Yojimbo [1961] Aside from Sergio Leone's well publicized uncredited western remake, "A Fistful of Dollars", there have been at least several other Yojimbo remakes (Django, & Last Man Standing, for example), as well as countless shows, films, stories & more that have lifted the main premise/setup, & revolved around a very similar central figure. & I get it. This movie is astonishingly good entertainment on many levels & easily holds the #2 spot on my countdown. 🎬 The influence, impact, & imitations brought about by these films is nearly impossible to estimate. There are the obvious & famous examples, but also countless lesser known (or lesser recognized) in the decades of film since. The western imitations, homages, & remakes are particularly worth noting, as Kurosawa himself was influenced by earlier great American westerns. • • • #kurosawa #akirakurosawa #KurosawaFilmography #kurosawathon #all30films #iLoveMovies #dvd #blurays #dvds #bluray #kurosawafilms #kurosawamovies #bestofthebest #thehiddenfortress (#akirakurosawasthehiddenfortress #starwars ) #1958 #sanjuro (#sanjuro1962 #akirakurosawassanjuro ) #1962 #yojimbo (#yojimbo1961 #akirakurosawasyojimbo ) #1961 #toshiromifune #takashishimura #tatsuyanakada (at Jersey City, New Jersey) https://www.instagram.com/p/CLUxMo2jvVR/?igshid=db9achmogx1k

So, I spent waaay too much time recently, going through lists of the best western films, cross referencing them, creating a weighted point system, then shuffling/adjusting by personal preference in the end anyway, and compiled a list of the 25 greatest westerns (& a bunch of honorable mentions). Well, anyway, 13 is my lucky number, so I'm going to marathon the top 13 westerns. • Greatest Western Countdown #13: A Fistful of Dollars • [The first film on my countdown is also the first of Segio Leone's 'Dollars Trilogy', often inaccurately named the 'Man with No Name Trilogy' (US marketing ploy). In fact, Clint Eastwood played 3 similar characters, who each had their own name; Joe, Monco, & Blondie.] • • • #GreatestWesternCountdown #number13 #iLoveMovies #blurays #films #movies #bluray #westerns #greatestwesterns #aFistfulOfDollars #sergioleone #clinteastwood #enniomorricone #spaghettiwestern #dollarstrilogy (Western remake of #kurosawa 's #yojimbo ) #1964 (at The Matt Cave) https://www.instagram.com/p/B1j13lTJsex/?igshid=6aka2pbxy713
