The fall of Erin Janus is pretty typical for vegans and animal rights activists to fight courageously for animal rights for a few years and then give up, thinking that they've done their part. Animal rights cannot advance unless we stay together as a movement and never give up and and never get distracted by something shiny and pretty and so much more gratifying than speaking out against the zolocaust.
Tom Regan knew this error and gave his emotive speech Sword of Truth Torch of Justice [Youtube link] in 1988. Even almost four decades ago an ARA knew that animal rights could only make a difference if they collectively stay activists. This phenomena is called "revolving door activism". I also would like vegans to listen to Jeremy the Ape's video here about "animal ambassador". He explains revolving door activism in the sense that Tom Regan once spoke of it.
I hope ex-vegans can come back to the movement. Remember that it is about the animals, not "us". When we forget our silly self-obsession and remember humility, we can do our part to make the world a better place! And, really, ex-vegans, when you were vegan you were making a difference.
It’s a question you may have heard one too many times: Do vegans really save animals? And it’s never been clearer that the answer to that question is an enthusiastic yes!
The proof? According to the USDA, 400 million fewer animals were slaughtered in 2014 than in 2007. That’s 400 million individuals who were spared a lifetime of unimaginable suffering.
And remember that we are not "saving" animals in a more genuine, pure, rhetoric. In a pure rhetoric, the one that recognizes our moral position, in truth, we are "sparing" them.'

Unfortunately just discovered a bird slaughtering facility in my neighborhood.
I was on a walk and, as a person who loves birds, was excited to hear bird sounds very close. It sounded vaguely gull-ish, so I looked up, but within a split second realized with horror that three feet in front of me on the sidewalk sat about ten crates cruelly overstuffed with live birds. Turkeys, chickens, and ducks. They couldn't move in the crates.
The turkeys had no room for any position other than laying. The crate squashing them down and together, it was the turkeys I heard, as they reacted to someone approaching. Black eyes of young turkeys, wondering what was next for them. Think of them, please, when you see their carcasses labeled with kind words in a grocery store this Thanksgiving season. Nothing kind happens to them. At no point in their life do they get to have quality time with any friends or family. It's the cruelest marketing there is.
Their crate was stacked atop two more crates stuffed with chickens. As small as the chickens were in comparison to the turkeys, there were so many packed in together that they could not turn around, and the crate was so shallow that their leg joint could only reach a maximum angle of 30 degrees. They were restless, and they were the majority. The other three stacks of crates were almost all chickens, the one exception being a crate of ducks.
The ducks were the liveliest. They seemed angriest, their crate second from the top of the stack, sandwiched between two crates of chickens. The ducks' long necks were forced into a dipped position. They communicated and tried their best to find egress. They don't want to be here, and they have never had a say in what happens to them. They want water and grass and there's only plastic and concrete and their own excrement.
A chicken in a crate in the middle of the stack relieves themselves, the excrement splashing forcefully onto the chickens in crates beside and below.
None of these birds can move. They have no options. There is no room, they are in literal cages. I don't know when they were delivered to the door of the slaughterhouse, and I don't know how much longer they will have to suffer there, smashed and aching and covered in shit. Impossibly confused about their situation.
I honestly hope, for their sakes, that they're dead by now. For their sakes and for my own peace, I hope they're dead, and I hope you think about them.

On the subject of food, sometimes it feels like the producers don’t always care about the contestants dietary choices? Like Lee with the deep fried task and he said “you knew I was vegan and still made me bite into an egg”. I definitely think it’s ignorance and not malice and chalk it up them forgetting it, but I do wish they’d take more care as professionals. As someone with religious diet restrictions that people constantly just ignore, it’s so not fun to watch.
oh yeah that’s one i’m more passionate about. that’s just fucked up. it’s unfair to the contestants and it’s never fun to watch
obviously some effort is put in, but slip ups shouldn’t be happening. especially if someone were to actually have a bad allergy or something. that’d be horrific

I see a couple people talk about how they'd personally reboot Danny Phantom and make Sam "still vegan but less pushy about it", and that's not a good idea for several reasons.
1) You're passing up on a wonderful character arc that the show also squandered. You see, Stubbornness is only a character flaw when it hurts others, having Sam realize and come to terms with forcing her ideas onto others hurts them, is an important lesson, and an important skill, that should be passed on to an audience. Having her stubbornness have good outcomes and bad outcomes and learning the difference of when to be stubborn and when to find other ways to communicate your ideas is just good writing ( and much better than the "you should always try to find compromise" that's implied when you take a loud activist character and make them quieter; cause, you know, "the compromise between genocide and civil rights is murder").
2) In a culture where "ideal women" are quiet, obedient, and subservient, it is sexist to take a character that's already a loud female character make her quieter for your own comfort or personal preference. I'm not saying that you, person who wants Sam to be more likeable and less annoying, are sexist. I'm saying that the action of making a female character quieter and more willing to compromise her core beliefs is a sexist action. (It's not even on purpose, it's just the facts of the situation)
3) Having any character be "quietly" vegan is just unrealistic. In real life, there are two types of vegan. The kind that try to push veganism onto everyone else, and the kind that have to keep reminding everyone they're vegan because, "yeah, I'd love to hang out, but that place doesn't have any vegan options". And both types seem to be in your face pushy about it, because being vegan comes up as often as being hungry, even if you're not being an activist about it. (And people get kinda touchy even when just saying that you're vegan, because the implication is you've thought about the morality of the food you eat and have come to a conclusion about it, while they haven't thought about it and don't want to come to the conclusion that they've been doing something bad this entire time. It's a subconscious thing, just like point 2!)
4) And even when Sam is being an activist about it, how often is it an actual problem? How many people get hurt from her activism? There's the Lunch Lady incident, and that's it! That's the one time it's an actual problem. Sam might offhandedly suggesting Danny use his superpowers to save animals or destroy SUVs, as if those are bad things to do. She's just right 99% of time.

What Is Vegan Leather Made Of? Many Plant Leathers Are Being Used (greenmatters.com)
Yes, plant leather is a great idea (not better than animal leather, in my personal opinion, but that's down to each individual's thoughts on the matter). But unfortunately much of it just can't replicate many of real leather's beneficial properties- and a lot of plant leathers heavily involve plastic in their production. (source)
Look, ALL clothing production needs to be more sustainable at this point. The chemicals involved in tanning actual leather, unless it's organic leather, aren't good for the environment either. And I will never rag on someone for their choice to avoid real leather- we're all just trying, I hope, to make the best choices according to our values and within the confines of a broken system (as long as we're not hurting anyone else). For me, the massive habitat loss and environmental destruction caused by plastics production and waste is a greater evil than the deaths of individual animals in the production of meat and/or leather. So I choose real leather and try to make each piece last as long as I can, aware that any choice I make will have environmental impacts and is not perfect. Someone else might see it differently, and I really am not in a position to judge their choices.
However.
The term "vegan leather" is blatant greenwashing, and 99% of the time it applies to plastic. If people prefer to wear plastic to avoid real leather, that's fine, but they- and moreover companies -need to be honest about that. Just like synthetic fabrics should be called plastic, so should synthetic leather. Even some of the allegedly "plant-based" stuff, it turns out.
I'm honest that my real leather is animal hide. Time for the faux-green fashion industry to display some honesty of its own.

the idea that vegans are always out eating the most expensive vegan cuisine we can find or buying meat substitutes no matter the price is wild.
i'm making cheap dishes at my house 99% of the time. most restaurants around me dont provide vegan options that go beyond salad with Nothing on it and MAYBE fries.
im not eating out or eating expensive substitutes every day.
i buy stuff on sale when i have the opportunity. i compare prices at stores so i get the cheapest price. if the products i want are too much for me to swing i dont get them. this is how a lot of people operate, especially in this economy. where are you people living where you see vegans buying expensive shit all the time

youtube channel that has a "team of writers" but still goes like "umm soy bad cuz so much defosteration in the amazon :)" as if they made at most 1 google search and looked at the preview of the first result.
its embarrassing.
another youtube channel with 1m+ subscribers talking about wool and acrylic and cotton fiber and going like "cotton needs a lot of water", while not saying a word about how much water all these sheep in australia need.
its embarrassing.
going vegan is like realizing 99% of people have bought into this misinformation and even if you say anything theyll just think you are biased, emotional, unreasonable and, gasp, classist/racist/ableist.
hbomberguy do a video on the animal exploitation industries, please.

since landing is closing down soon, i decided to take a quick break from SUPERSTRUCTURE (although i will be back don't you worry two fans) and made some fashion moodboards for the 14 fears from the magnus archives to accompany this post there will be some notes and insight on each collage under the cut.
the buried: the buried was really underutilized in the podcast imo. some of my favorite episodes revolved around the buried like lost john's cave and we all ignore the pit. i really hope this did it justice since jonny sims did not.
the corruption: oh my god this one was so hard to make. my google search history is full of terms like "bug infested dress", "moldy clothing" and "yucky fashion" the corruption girlies really seemed to like my last post so i felt obligated to get it right. i think i did okay.
the dark: making a black on black collage look decent is really hard 😭 I was originally going to go victorian for this one but ended up doing nu goth instead since I thought victorian fit a lot better with the end.
the desolation: this is one of my favorites. there's somthing so satisfying about combining ashy greys and black with orange it just tickles my brain. other than that, i don't really have any notes
the end: as mentioned earlier, i went with victorian mourning wear for the end. i mean queen victoria herself was in mourning and only wore black for forty years. that era is so synonymous with death it only felt fair to work its customs and fashion into my end board.
the eye: eye avatars are legally required to wear academic fashion. it just comes with the job description. i don't make the rules. have fun being jonathan sims
the flesh: this one really took me down a rabbit hole. first:, i could only find those anti-vegan shirts that your unemployed uncle wears to the family barbecue and then i came across this fashion designer and spent like an hour on her shop trying to figure out how she got her clothes to look like that. after that it took me another two hours to find all of the accessories. pinterest has been both my best friend and worst enemy over the course of this project.
the hunt: i am so sorry the supernatural gas leakage returned to my home when i made this and I age regressed into being 15 again. when i was making this i pictured it more as the trevor and julia flavor of the hunt instead of say, daisy. god breast america.
the lonely: this one was pretty easy to make once i got a handle on the color scheme. the aesthetic of the lonely has always striken me as a romanticization of the melancholy. think wanderer above the sea of fog. So i gave this one all the things i would romantasize about my life at my loneliest, which is why there's a teacup and a heart locket. the book was also a part of that, but it also doubles as a recreation of a leitner by theponderingalpaca on reddit.
the slaughter: yeah yeah i know the slaughter is supposed to be about war as well as murder, but forgive me for not making a fashion collage about military uniforms. that's really boring. i had just watched woodstock '99 before i made this though and decided to go more for that angry punk/metalhead fashion that korn was wearing in that concert. them and limp biskit are the closest we'll ever get to irl grifters bone.
the spiral: i made this moodboard twice. i know its crazy that the fear meant to represent insanity is hard to pin down, but i think i did it better the second time around. the first one read too much as regular kidcore/decora for my taste.
the stranger: i had to do this one last. i could not for the life of me figure out how to make a circus/uncanny fashion board without just doing clown fashion. i'm still not entirely sure how i feel about how it turned out, but at least the masks are cool.
the vast: vast avatars rise up!! this is a mike crew fan blog and i only wanted to base the fashion around him. he's in the top three list of guys i'm autistic about with elliott stardew valley and daniel powell from archive 81.
the web: not much to say here except if you are a web avatar you have to wear a cunty dress. it is simply non negotiable
thank you to @artmadval for giving me the idea to do this with your amazing fashion archives art, along with everyone else who went through all my yapping to get here. love yall!
