house of leaves has my mind blown at such random stuff. page 97 has a check mark in the corner.
[i'll add random other musings below]
notation 127 references a real book which is even on archive dot org..!!! and it says to check out a diagram But you need to log in to view the book. AAGHH!!
page 119 it is now time to be confused on how to read this 👍
nevermind the box is just all one long footnote. and the backwards box is like a reversal of the previous box.
"this is what happens when you hurry in a maze. the faster you go, the worse you are entangled"..... UH OH !
the footnotes along the sides are just BUILDING NAMES?? and then ARCHITECTS ??????? i do really like the cyclical nature of these notes, one makes u flip thru several pages and then you have to turn the book upside down and flip back thru the same pages. the last note in this series is right at the 2nd page in this sequence but along the side. makes me think of. a spiral ::-) makes me smile.
im just now realizing some of these notation marks are letters instead of numbers....X appears several times (that footnote is on page 107) but theres also like, LL (but if the first L was reversed)? and this one is F (page 122). not sure if there is a meaning here
page 127 guys this is scary
(page 151) "I was sorry to hear he disappeared. Do you know what happened to him?" HE WHAT?????
(page 620) okay i decided to read some more letters from (checks her name) Pelafina and. this is one is. ::-(
okay i finished her letters and wah........... sad. i wonder what was the one jewelry johnny kept from her.
(page 154) i already forgot what these different names were for ermmm lol. great hall and antechamber. i forgor
(page 159) the fact that the stairwell was around 13 miles long for Roberts' crew and then for Navdison its 100 feet.... LOLLLL F--K the explorers in particular
(page 192) YAY JED and wax !!! i never thought id be so so happy to see them again. yayyy. but now getting out is the next obstacle.. F--K OFF I CANT BELIEVE HOW SOONI SPOKE f--k this book
SICKENIINNNNGGGG!!!!!!!
(page 263) I LOVE THAT there are occasional emails from people after the 1st printing and someone says "what was all that crazy stuff in the introduction about guns and blood?" THATS WHAT IM SAYIINNGGGGG
(page 272) this makes me think that the stairwell is analogous to a throat..
(page 305) once again. witnessing the staircase lengthen and groan. makes me think it is literally swallowing navy.
(page 318) im so so glad wax survived YAY
(page 320) this made me get up and start pacing and smiling. like. this house wants navy so bad. SO BAD
(page 326) JOHNNY BECOMES SELF AWARE THAT HE A FICTIONAL CHARACTEr (scary)
btw i did find ouf the letters used in notations are actually symbols bc there is a photo of a graph of them on the inner cover. i dont actualy know how to look up what they are called at all tbh. theyre like. aircraft related.
(page 342) bruh this is new and scary. fhe house's shifting horror now extending beyond the imposible hallways but into the main house ...... what the......
(page 397) everyone in this book is so FREUDIAN !!!! like all the psychology is so fruedian i think.
(page 402) im so fascinated by these dream scenes i didnt expdct this book to really have a dream scene but there u go ^^__^^ im sad the promised third dream is missing......
OH YEAH BABY WE ACTUALLY HAVE A MINOTAUR PRESENT also in a dream scene. EVERYONE GIVE IT UP FOR A MINOTAUR PRESENCE
(page 406) this is some like. reverse tma thing. you know how in tma everyone who gives a statement to jon has nightmare of him. this is like what if jon did something to absolve everyone of their nightmares. huh. (also i havent gotten past this part i dont even know what navidson Does back in the house yet.........)
OH I JUST REALIZED THE SKETCHES IN APPENDIX II ARE JOHNNY'S. he mentioned doodling on any scraps of paper he had like mail and i was like heh. just like in the appendix. OH WAIT
i love that tgis chapter does NOT end in a period and ends with an open-ended sentence that segues into the next chapter. thats so neat ::-) idek if navy is still alive like wtf i dont know yet SHHH shhhh
(page 425) the dread this is imbuing in me. the floors tilting slightly wherever navy goes to guide him along. youre at the mercy of this house now..
(page 465) WHAT THE ? THIS BOOK IS WITHIN THISBBOOK? (navidson has a book titled house of leaves) WHAT?
(page 468) this desolation almost made me cry somehow . maybe logcially its not the worst thing thats happened in this book but the nothingness is crushing
this part makes u turn the book around a lot and i really did get a sense of dizziness while reading bc i realized i didnt know whether the text i was reading was really along the bottom of the page or what... also im still so tripped up that they mention this book by name, even say how many pages it has, and that 'maybe some of the pages are hard to read'. bro.
the song on page 479 is apparently "when johnny comes marching home" which i had to look up but thats where the tune of that song the ants go marching one by one comes from???? u learn something new every day.
i like that the footnote on page 488 is another of those aeronautic symbols (theres a chart of some of them on a collage in the back) and this one means "heavily injured, need a doctor"...............
(page 527) "and whenever she laughs the notes sing a call to Victory" STARTS BAWLING
okay i done YAYYYYYYYYY AAAUUUUUHHHHHHHHHGGGGHHHHHHHHHH i have yet to finish the appendices....

I think the main reason why im so angry about nighthearts character and how both the narrative and fandom reacts to him is because there are character like bluestar, frecklewish and dawnpelt who will get ripped apart by the fandom for acting mean and having unhealthy coping mechanisms and lashing out,  but when a male character does the SAME EXACT THING he gets praised by both the fandom and the authors for being a sad little boy who’s in a tough situation and deserves the world and no consequences!!
like its super confusing because the fandom (and the books too) only accept female trauma victims if there timid nice soppy characters who keep all their emotions to themselves and don’t know how to stick up for themselves, which is totally NOT misogynistic. because how dare women show emotions other than nice

Still thinking about big visual Halo books. Like... Halo has a lot of big visual books? Not just art books, but also attempts at presenting parts of the lore to people?
Tumblr media
A decent copy of the The Art of Halo is just on the archive, straight up, you can download it, the text is searchable.
It's from 2004 so it's Pre-3 but there's a wealth of material in there, concept sketches and story boards and silly things that Bungie artists made. This one is extremely common secondhand, which handily demonstrates how Halo was once a gamer culture juggernaut.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I only ever saw the first one in person at a book store one time, but the Halo Visual Guides look like they were kind of a follow up to the Halo Encyclopedia (2011 updated edition) that were put together by 343. They're shorter, and I haven't gone through but it kinda feels like the team re-consolidating its grip on the lore?
The archive does have scans of both The Essential Visual Guide and The Halo 4 specific one but they're not freely downloadable and are once again somewhat rough-quality library book scans. Which is better than nothing, but as always I see Amazon and Google Books have crisp digital previews of unattainable digital files and thus I softly hiss fuckers.
(They seem to be cheap secondhand though, the Halo 4 one specifically looks like it goes for $3. I bet you that's because other people also forget it exists.)
Tumblr media
343i did their own take on the Art of Building Worlds in 2011 (which was the 10 year Haloversary) but I cannot really find much about it, unless I wanna sit through a video of someone flipping through it. I've never seen it in person.
(Halo 4 also got its own art book but that one's pretty obvious, I have that.)
Moving on into Halo 5 era, Halo 5 got its own art book too (which I have not found and have also not been motivated to pursue.)
But we also got these bad boys:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cannot find digital copies of these anywhere for love or money. I've seen Warfleet secondhand a few times, but never Mythos.
Halopedia has a ton of the new art that was commissioned for Mythos, though. Novel nerds will appreciate that a lot of it is book scenes.
Mythos isn't an encyclopedia, it's an attempt at laying down the Halo chronology as it stood at the end of Halo 5 (and up to 2016), folding in the stories from the novels and the games. I think it's really cool, even though y'all know my opinion on this era of Halo lore. I was so stoked to get it when it came out, even though I was still pissed about 5 and had given up on Halo novels for 6 or 7 years at the time.
Warfleet is a comparatively slim book, most of these are around 200 pages and Warfleet clocks at 97 or so. It's TALL though, like, shelf-frustratingly tall.
Tumblr media
U See. Mythos is a full on artbook sized, it's huge. Warfleet is taller and longer. I gotta turn this fucker on its side to make it fit.
Warfleet is small, it has a really slender rundown of the Halo universe/some of the planets but its real meat is the big centerpiece cutaway views of a bunch of Halo spaceships commissioned from artists who I am pretty sure had done similar work for Star Wars before. It's pretty cool.
A lot of art can be found over here.
Tumblr media
In general I think most things that matter got consolidated into Halo Encyclopedia 2022, but like. Man.
Halo has had a lot, you know? The Microsoft dollar shows.

I went thru my folder with old hockey magazines I had saved from around 2011 to 2015 and came across this one and thought it could be a fun to make a post about now in hindsight.
This is Jääkiekko magazine from May 2012, they always have a section of "99 questions with ..." and in this issue they interviewed Teräväinen.
I’ve translated the questions I found interesting under the cut! It ended up being about half of the interview. (*) are my additions.
On the cover "seuraava superjokeri" means the next super joker, he played for Helsingin Jokerit so it's a word play from that. Under, on the blue print it says: "The 17-year-old forward will become a first round draft pick in the summer. The natural goal scorer can dominate in SM-Liiga as soon as next season."
In the 2nd photo the headline and lead paragraph goes:
"A post with dents* - A year ago Teuvo Teräväinen was known only within a small number of hockey insiders. Few passers-by recognize him now either but after a flashy rookie season the Jokerit sensation is on the radar of every NHL team and is a strong contender to become a first round draft pick. Next season with Jokerit the talented second line center will be one of the main talking points in the SM-Liiga."
(*references the net Teräväinen had in his backyard and into which he practiced his shooting)
3. You've been described as a magician, top scorer, wunderkind and a prodigy. What do you think of these descriptions?
TT: Heh, those are some descriptions yeah. What can I really say? Don't really wanna comment on them much.
4. How nervous are you about the Draft?
TT: I try not to be nervous as best as I can. In a way I don't have anything to be nervous about since I don't care which team picks me or at what number I go.
6. Which is stressing you more, English interviews or physical tests?
TT: Maybe both. Bench press (laughs) and English interviews can be tough.
12. How far along have you planned your career with, for example, your parents or your agent?
TT: Haven't really planned things with others but I've thought about them myself. I try to go step by step and not jump too far ahead.
14. How does it feel to be so young with all the star players in Jokerit?
TT: How to say it? I haven't felt like I was young but a part of the team instead. The team's been very good with me and they haven't been looking down at me like: "oh he's young". It's been fun to play in an experienced team.
15. Is there a generational gap between players?
TT: You can see the age difference, older players look older but we're all childish, at least with our topics.
17. What does a 17-year-old do in the sauna nights of the team?
TT: I actually haven't been in any yet. I've always been at national team's camps or something.
19. Did you get the number you wanted?
TT: I did, yeah. I could've taken #18 but Semir (Ben-Amor) has it. But i'm happy with #86, it's good.
23. What are your strengths as a player?
TT: Offensive play and with that playing with the puck, passing, IQ, power play and skill, just the usual skill - skill with hands.
24. And weaknesses?
TT: They are to do with defensive play, strength and physicality. Battles and such but I think I took a step forward last season. That's a good thing.
25. Have you ever been "pressed into a mold" or has your playing style gotten to develop naturally?
TT: As a kid the play was mostly offensive/attacking, I didn't have to think about playing defence. Up until 15 years old, I got to attack pretty freely. Playing defence became more important when I started to play in A-juniors a couple seasons ago.
26. On a scale from 1 to 10 how determined are you?
TT: Maybe 8, feels like an 8.
32. What kind of role are you planning to take with Jokerit next season?
TT: I think a pretty big one. I try to be a top player and not just take others' example but give others example myself too. So that someone in the team can take something out of the way I do things on the ice and off the ice.
35. If you could pick anyone, who would be your car driver?
TT: Nico Manelius for sure. He's been my driver this season. I've had others too, like Riku Hahl but he's not nearly at the same level. Nico’s clearly the best.
36. What are the most important qualifications to be a good driver?
TT: The car is obviously important. Hahl's car is totally awful, he takes a lot of heat for it from the guys too. I wouldn't dare driving with him. Manelius is a steady performer, never lets you down.
38. What sports did you play as a 10-year-old?
TT: Hockey and floorball, probably football (soccer) during the summers at the time too.
42. When did you decide to focus only on hockey?
TT: So when I stopped playing other sports? Three years ago, before that floorball was kind of a side thing, I played a couple of games in the regular season and playoffs.
45. Do you follow floorball or other sports? Go to games?
TT: I don't go to games but I like to watch floorball on TV, it's an interesting sport. Sometimes I watch football too but I don't follow it much. Feels like they never score there.
47. Have you ever played with a wooden stick?
TT: As a kid I did play with a wooden stick.
49. You won the hockey players' golf tournament last summer even though there were more experienced players too. Are you good with all stick games?
TT: Well, I've been pretty good in all of them. I've played golf for a long time and still play it.
50. How is your swing?
TT: Pretty bold, kind of a hockey swing. I don't really care where the ball goes - as long as it goes far.
52. What do you think of off-ice training?
TT: Let's just say it's more stupid than being on the ice but you still gotta do it to be better on the ice.
56. Which word describes your professional relationship (with his coach, Tomek Valtonen), tranquil or colorful?
TT: Colorful of course. At times we're joking around, other times it's more serious but the relationship is really good.
57. Coaching you has been described in many words: good, bad, worse. What are they?
TT: Heh, well... I won't tell them here. He (Tomek) keeps the discipline during practices but sometimes when things haven't gone to a plan I've had to jump on an exercise bike in the middle of a practice.
58. What have been the reasons?
TT: I'll quote Tomek: "when I haven't been present".
59. Have you ever tried to turn the resistance of the bike to zero?
TT: (Laughs) Of course I have and sometimes I've even succeeded.
60. Describe your diet in three words?
TT: Greasy, healthy and good!
64. Your first name is not common for people your age. How did your parents come up with it?
TT: I actually don't even know. Maybe they didn't want a usual Ville*....
(*very common name for men of all ages in Finland)
66. Which of these is the most important: skill, unexpectedness or courage?
TT: Skill!
68. Your longest video game stint?
TT: Six hours, at least. I've played a lot of War of Duty lately.
72. The dumbest thing that has made you upset in hockey?
TT: Probably if I didn't get an assist on a goal even though I should have. Or even worse is if I score and they mark it down for someone else.
79. Have you had any concussions?
TT: I haven't had any, I've managed to always dodge them.*
(*ouch, tho it's good the recent one is his only as far as i remember)
84. In 2011 Team Finland finished in the 5th place at the U-18 tournament. Why only as 5th?
TT: Because we lost to Team Russia in the quarter final, just as well we could have won that game too.
89. You didn't get to be on the ice to accept the SM-Liiga bronze medal (because of the U-18's). When and where did you get it?
TT: I actually still haven't received it, I don't know where it is.
93. What is the population of Helsinki?
TT: There's like 5 million people in Finland so maybe around 500k in Helsinki? (to be exact 596k) Did i really get it right...?
94. Who's the mayor of Helsinki?
TT: I don't know, I barely know the president.
95. Do you think the municipalities in the capital city area should merge?
TT: Luckily I don't have to decide but they probably shouldn't.
96. What do you check first in the news paper?
TT: The sports section.
97. Your favorite tv show?
TT: Putous* was pretty good, I liked a lot of the characters. The grandma was pretty good.
(*Finnish live improvisation comedy/sketch show (there are still new seasons, the latest just finished). Every actor comes up with a humor character with a catchy phrase and one of them wins. "The grandma" is Marja Tyrni and I just got such flashbacks from typing this sentence.)
98. Last book you read?
TT: I don't read many books. The last book was a study book, a Finnish book. I wrote an essay on Tiki (Esa) Tikkanen's biography. An eventful book, great career and a lot of chirps.
99. Who should we ask the 99 questions next?
TT: Riku Hahl could have good stories, he's also seen a lot of the world.

Okay if you're still doing these: Rukebox + Modeling/Fashion Design AU? ♥️
Umm, yes please send me all the prompts, I am having a ball filling them!
Julie sketches quickly, not wanting to lose the shape of the jacket she has in mind, altering the cut subtly so it fits the model standing before her, accenting his arms and torso, both of which are on display as Reggie measures him, face aflame at the hunk before him. Julie will admit she is also a little affected, but who can blame her when a literal Adonis volunteers to model her spring line?
"All done boss." Reggie croaks as he not so subtly fans himself, tipping a half empty water bottle down his throat and almost sputtering when the model-"Call me Luke."- winked at him. Then again when he winked at Julie also, she had to stop and remember how to breathe for a moment, clutching tight to Reggie's hand, the both of them sharing a look of bi panic and not knowing how they are going to get through the rest of this fitting, especially after Luke pushes his pants off with a smirk so Reggie can measure his inseam.

Peterpatter + "I'd tell you that I love you, but I'd rather show you?"
Luke would be the first to tell you that he fell in love hard and fast rather frequently. But also that he fell out of it in a remarkably similar fashion. His crushes were fleeting and numerous. So he didn't make a thing of it when he develops a bit of a thing for Reggie.
At first he doesn't think much of it, he always felt fiercely protective of Reggie, and well, his band was full of smoke shows so finding any of them attractive wasn't a stretch. But wanting to kiss Reggie, hold hands with him when they walked down the hallways side by side, that was new. He shook the thoughts from his head, and figured they would die a natural death fairly soon.
But they linger, and start to grow stronger. He finds himself constantly lavishing Reggie with touch, beyond what he normally does. Reggie doesn't seem to mind, sometimes reciprocating, sometimes just flushing bright red, but Reggie blushes every few minutes over seemingly nothing, so Luke doesn't pay it much mind.
It's when he awakens one night, panting and sweaty from a vivid dream, grimacing at the current state of his boxers that he admits that maybe it's more than a crush. And maybe he won't get over it until he admits as much, to both himself and Reggie.
The opportunity presents itself soon after, with a gig booked for two weeks time. Luke has always been one for big gestures, so he figures that this is the opportune moment. He spends his nights scribbling down lyrics and melody like a madman. The guys learn the tune fairly quickly, all of them teasing him about his latest flame, and Luke has to bite his tongue and try his hardest not to let his eyes drift to Reggie.
The night of the show, Luke is all nerves, bouncing around frantically until it's time to reveal the new song. "This one goes out to someone very special to me. I've never been all that good at telling people how I feel-" Luke gives a little self deprecating laugh and gives the rest of his speech while looking directly at Reggie. "I'd tell you that I love you, but I'd rather show you instead. This one's for you babe."
Reggie looks gobsmacked, but still manages to get through the song, though when they share a mic his eyes are trained on Luke's lips and Luke has to restrain himself from leaning forward and having their first kiss onstage. He's singing the song back to Luke, his feelings reflected in his eyes.
When the song ends, they're still looking at one another, breathing heavy, implications of what this means hanging between them. There's a chant from the crowd that they should kiss, growing in volume and speed. Luke bites his lip, and grins, still looking at Reggie, the decision on his hands.
Reggie swings his bass around to his back and surges in, cupping Luke's face as he kisses him, the crowd erupting in cheers, with their bandmates cheering right along with them. They slowly pull apart, both looking amazed and ecstatic.
"Love you too," Reggie whispers, quiet enough the mic doesn't pick it up, but Luke does, and beams before pulling him in for another kiss. For some reason, he gets the feeling that this love won't be fading any time soon.

I wish you'd write a fic where Julie's falling in love with the charismatic radio host that she always listens to on her way to and from work (maybe she calls in sometimes?), but she has no idea how close he really is and they wind up crossing paths 🥰
"Hey out there my fellow night owls, shift workers, and insomniacs! It's time for Reggie's Request Hour here at KACL, so call them in!" The radio blares and Julie gives a soft little smile, always loving listening to Reggie, the local radio host. He helped after a long shift at work and even longer drive home. He always made sure to only play things that needed to be played loud, given his main audience were trying to stay awake at that hour. She had sent in a few requests, and he often dedicated them to 'the lady with the voice of an angel and a wicked taste in music.'
Julie saw the long line of traffic before her and figured why not send in another song request until she could get to the closest fast food place for a quick meal. Screw counting calories when she was starving and out of groceries. She set up her hands free to dial the radio station, humming along to the obnoxiously catchy hold music. "Hello, you've reached Reggie at KACL, what can I play for you?"
"Hey Reggie."
"Hey Angel, how've you been?"
"Oh you know, same shit, different day."
"Sorry to hear that. Anything I can play for you to lift your spirits?"
"You got any Rose and the Petal Pushers for me?" Julie asked, biting her lip. She usually never requested her mom's old band, it made her miss her too much. But right now, with the anniversary of her death coming up, Julie hoped it would be more of a balm than a bruise.
"Oooh, deep cut. Lemme see... yup, got just the track for you. Anything else darlin'? I usually wouldn't take multiple requests, but you sound like you need another one." The amount of care in Reggie's voice could make Julie swoon. She had no idea what this man looked like, only knew him for the small little interactions like this one, but he always made her feel... special somehow.
"Play me your favourite song by a band no one else knows."
"Oooh, a woman after my own heart, trusting my taste! For all you know I could be a secret country lover."
"I like country."
"Okay, that's it, I need to like marry you or something." Then Reggie let out a cough, and Julie knew he had to be blushing as much as she was. "I mean... I'm going to play your songs now and hope you haven't been scared off for life there angel."
"Julie."
"Julie," Reggie said, the awe in his voice at her name, like it was a prayer. "Comin' right up."
The call ended, and Julie was astounded, but not really surprised when the next song up was her mom's rendition of 'Bad Reputation', followed by a band called Sunset Curve, who Reggie claimed was playing The Orpheum next month. Julie had never heard of them, but she did enjoy rocking out to their song, and resolved to get tickets for their show.
A month later, Julie found herself in the front row of The Orpheum, jumping around to the strains of Sunset Curve, blushing whenever the bassist caught her eye and winked at her. Okay, so he was super cute, even if her heart was still caught on a voice that called her angel. Yet when he stepped to the mic for a solo, she nearly fainted. She knew that voice. "Reggie!" she called when he was done, and he looked at her, surprised that she knew his name. He knelt down to smile at her.
"Hey darlin', hope you're enjoying the show. What's your name, I can get you on the list for the after party," he said, his grin wide.
"It's Julie. But you can call me angel."

The JatP Blacklist
I haven't seen it, not going looking for it.
All I'm going to say is enjoy fandom how you want to. Fandom is for everyone, and doesn't need policing. I'm going to link to this post because @modernvintage hit the nail on the fucking head with this issue weeks ago.
I'm also going to quote @astorytotellyourfriends response because they summed it up perfectly:
i’m honestly horrified that whoever made that post decided to go that extreme when they could have just as easily said “hey these people write smut and it’s not for me, if it’s not for you either then feel free to use this as a reference list.”
that, i would’ve been fine with. to each their own, and i encourage everyone to curate their fandom experience! but don’t go throwing around the p word. it’s vile and they should be ashamed of themselves.

flowers in your hair
↬ Johnny Suh x Reader ↬1.8k Words ↬Your allergies and creating art are two things Johnny holds dear to his heart
Tumblr media
You hated the outdoors. Anything to do with bugs, dirt, and even plants made you itch and sneeze and scared that you’ll get some rare unknown disease and die because the innocent looking flower you picked by the bench turned out to be poisonous.
Johnny on the other hand, enjoyed nature and embraced it to its fullest. Every day he’d make time to bask in the grass, and soak up all the sun while working on his latest art inspiration.
Today, he decided that sitting in a field full of sunflowers would be ideal for his newest project, and what would make it more worthwhile and perfect was if you, his girlfriend  were with him to occupy his time and add further enjoyment to his favourite hobby.
Horrible idea on his part because you’re allergic to flowers, and tall fields of grass would most likely break you out into hives and have you coughing up a lung. Johnny wouldn’t bat an eye though, because despite loving you with all his heart, he had a knack for making fun of you and the simplest inconveniences that occurred within your life.
He always says you’re over dramatic when it comes to your “spring allergies” and that nothing like some water and the fresh air will clear your mind and nasal passages.
He’s a dumbass, and he really will be the reason you die one day.
But Johnny didn’t care, because as long he had you, a bottle of allergy medicine for your sneezing and itching, and his paintbrushes, he was content, even if you spent a great amount of your time in this damn sunflower field teary eyed and stuffy nosed.
“Johnny, please tell me we can leave soon, I'm itching way more now than I did when i had the chickenpox as a kid,” you whine, rubbing your hands across your bare arms to provide you with any relief as you watched the bees swarm past you in their search for some nectar in the flowers nearby.
“Mhm,” he whispers, continuing to stroke the paintbrush across the now detailed page, completely oblivious to the words that just left your mouth.
This always happened. Whenever he took you somewhere new, he’d completely block out the world, yourself included, in order to capture the essence of life whether it be through his camera or canvas.
Of course there was silence, why wouldn’t there be. Every time Johnny asks you to accompany him anywhere outdoors, you always think you’re going to explore and embrace nature, and every single time you are wrong, because the second you find something beautiful to look at, he sets his small backpack down and busts out either his camera or painting utensils to capture it.
You’d say it pissed you off at times, but art is his passion, and you’d never do anything to get in the way he feels so alive and free whenever he consumes himself with something as minuscule and simple as a paperclip. He finds the beauty in anything and everything, never ceasing to amaze you with the wonderful creations he illustrates.
“Johnny,” you say a little louder, unamused with the silence you receive, and the continuous strokes he continues to make on the page.
You call his name again, and again, and again, and it’s only the third time when you yell out his full name, that he finally drops the brush on his palette and focuses his attention on you.
“Were you not listening to me?” You question, seriously surprised that out of all the times you’ve called his name, he either completely ignored you or has gone def within his 25 years of life.
“Oh, I was listening,” he hums, raising his eyebrows whilst providing you with his staple cheeky grin, one he always does when he wants to get on your nerves.
Always a cocky one that guy, and how you manage to stay dating him truly blows your mind.
Sighing, you focus your gaze away from the way he picks up his paintbrush again and gently strokes baby blue across the page, looking towards the tall stocks of sunflowers gently breezing in the wind a few feet away from you.
“You’re such a crappy boyfriend,” you chuckle, picking up one of the untouched pastel crayons and examining its fluorescent blue hue.  “You never pay attention to me.”
“I never pay attention to you, hm?” He asks, causing you to stare back at his now stoic stature, face still focusing on his notebook and nowhere on you, but more contoured and rigid this time.
“Well, you’re speaking to me now yet your attention is never on me, always on whatever you’re painting or drawing,” your tone slightly angered.
Obviously you were lying. Johnny was the most attentive boyfriend you could ever ask for, always checking in on you and ensuring your day goes smoothly, always hanging out with you when he’d rather be napping or out painting or doing photography, and almost always is down to make out with you whenever the opportunity arises.
You just like to pull his leg most of the time because it’s funny seeing how riled up he gets when he believes that you think he’d rather focus on his hobbies over having conversations with you.
“Here,” he signals, shoving his book in your direction, encouraging you to look through the worn out leather book he kept hidden for months, wanting you to see what he has been working on secretly whenever you were together.
Confused, you run your fingers along the enclosed ribbon on the cover of the sketchbook, hesitant to allow yourself in the work he’s immersed himself in for hours whenever the beauty in nature took over his attention span away from you.
Raising his eyebrows, he nods in a manner that demands you open the book. “If I don’t pay any attention to you, look through the book.”
Untying the string , you decide that whatever is in this book isn’t a secret anymore, because it wouldn’t even be in your hands if Johnny didn’t practically throw it at you to shut you and your curiosity up.
The first few pages are beautiful, really. He has a way with his sketches, always seeming so simple yet so realistic you’d think they were actual pictures edited just to appear more striking to the eye.
“Nature really is what inspires you hm?,” you ask, more of a rhetorical question because you already know the answer that’ll come from his mouth.
Chuckling, he brings his body closer to yours so his chin is resting on your shoulder, watching as you delicately turn the pages of his book. “Yeah, but there’s something more encapsulating that ends up being my muse, just keeping looking through.”
Golden sunflowers, vibrant pink sunsets, the giant pumpkin you both visited at the fall fair last year, everything you two experienced together when hanging out was documented in this book and reinvented through his drawings or paintings of them.
And then you saw a sketch of yourself. At first you thought it was cute, because he’d always draw you and all your other friends whenever he got bored. But four pages later all you found were several pages filled with you, ranging from when when he placed different coloured tulips in your hair that one time you went on a walk in the new community garden not far from your favourite ice cream shop, or when you experimented with makeup and put glitter all over your eyebrows.
Every moment you deemed minuscule and fun was captured so deeply in Johnny’s eyes, that he decided to relive it all again through the many strokes and colours that seamlessly came together to create something so beautiful.
Your breath was absolutely taken away.
You always thought nature is what captured Johnny’s attention the most, but turns out it’s always been you.
“I’m. Wait Johnny this is so-,” you begin to say, but your words become jumbled and your emotions a tangled mess, leaving you with tears in your eyes and so much more love for him in your heart than you’d ever had before, all because he drew some pictures of you.
“Do you like them?” he questions, raising his eyebrows, awaiting your answer of approval, his question only promoting the waterworks to begin and your head to aggressively nod.
You place the notebook gently on the blanket you two were sitting on, and crawl into his lap, pressing your body closer to his as you wrap your arms around his neck.
They were absolutely perfect. He was perfect.
Everything Johnny Suh says and does is absolutely incredible and you’re so incredibly lucky to be dating the cheesiest, most loving goofball the earth has to offer. Even if he’s a giant pain in your ass 97% of the time.
Pecking his cheek, you stare into his gleaming brown orbs. “I absolutely love them, Mr. Johnny Suh, and I love you a million times more.”
Tightening your arms around his neck, you couldn’t help but embrace this moment for much longer. You don’t care that you’re five seconds away from bursting into hives and that your throat feels like it’s closing up. Holding on to your very sweet, thoughtful boyfriend for as long as you could right in this moment was all that mattered to you.
“I was joking by the way, I know you care about me alot and pay more attention than most boyfriends would and I appreciate you tremendously.” You could start to feel the tears well up in the corners of your eyes, because you honestly don’t know what you’d do without Johnny.
He was your best friend, and has been such an uplifting, inspiring person ever since he entered your life your freshman year of college, the thought of him not being in your life one day was a scary thought you never wanted to come true.
“I love you always.”
“I know babe”, he whispered, kissing your cheek and running his fingers delicately through your hair, trying to calm you down as he could sense you were feeling rather overwhelmed.
“I wouldn’t keep dragging you to places you hated if I knew you didn’t love me,” he exclaimed, bursting out into a loud, body shaking laugh that provided you with the comfort to let your tears go, and laugh in unison with him.
Lifting you off his lap, Johnny grabs his art supplies and gently places them in his bag, grabbing your hand and pulling you up from the dry, matted grass you were both sitting on.
“Where are you dragging me?”
“Back to my place.” He winks, quickly pecking your lips before intertwining his fingers with yours, pulling you into the direction of his car.
“It wouldn’t be romantic to be making out with my girlfriend that I love very much in a sunflower field if she kept sneezing in my face, wouldn’t it?”

Everything I Watched in 2019
Movies
The number in parentheses is year of release, asterisks denote a re-watch, and titles in bold are my favourite watches of the year.
01 The Death of Stalin (17) does a neat trick of building goodwill for Steve Buscemi’s Krushchev, then brutally pays that off in the last few minutes.
02 Sorry to Bother You (18)
03 Support the Girls (18)
04 Paddington (14)*
05 Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (16)
06 Eighth Grade (18) probably the most terrifying movie I watched all year, if you didn’t watch it through your fingers, who even are you?
07 Morvern Callar (02) much less bleak than the book, but then, nearly anything would be
08 The Favourite (18) revolting and beautiful.
09 Columbus (17) a really lovely movie about architecture and parent-child relationships.
10 Bring it On (00)*
11 The Land of Steady Habits (18) feels wackier than your average Holofcener, but still a good watch.
12 Spotlight (15) i was really bowled over by this, and wasn’t expecting to be. Workmanlike filmmaking, but an extraordinary story, well-told.
13 The Killing of a Sacred Deer (17) Barry Keoghan is a blank, but somehow compelling screen presence. This one has an ending that made me bark with laughter.
14 Legends of the Fall (94)
15 Moneyball (11)* if you don’t feel like watching anything in particular, you can always watch Moneyball
16 If Beale St Could Talk (18) very beautiful, but I failed to connect with it on any other level.
17 For Keeps (88)
18 Abducted in Plain Sight (17)
19 Oscar Shorts (Animated) (18) the offerings were very sappy this year, but the winner was decent! Lots of Toronto content (weird).

40 Isle of Dogs (18)
41 Chinatown (74)*

43 Age of Innocence (93) Daniel Day-Lewis manages to make Newland Archer compelling, where in the novel he’s...the worst?!
44 Shopgirl (05)*
45 The House (17) didn’t sustain all the way through, but then, that’s how mainstream comedies often go.
46 The Beguiled (17)
47 Badlands (73)*
48 Poetic Justice (93)
49 The Empire Strikes Back (80)*
50 Calibre (18)

55 Jaws (79)*
56 Lover Come Back (61)
57 Frenzy (72)

61 Sneakers (92)
62 Roadhouse (87)*

79 The Film Worker (17)
80 Whitney (18)

83 Apollo 13 (95)*
84 Psycho 2 (83) the twist is very guessable, but there are a couple of nice-looking scenes.
85 Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (04)*

112 Nocturnal Animals (16)
113 Kill Bill Vol 1 (03) I’d only ever seen the second one before, being a non-Tarantino completionist.

118 National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (89)*
119 Let It Snow (19)
120 Frozen (13)
121 The Irishman (19) most interesting as a sort of pastiche/reckoning on the part of Scorsese about his other gangster films. Really outmoded view of unions. Definitely could have been edited down if anyone were able to come to it without undue reverence, but I did love the bit about the fish.
122 Girls Trip (17) actual plot is beside the point.
123 About a Boy (02)* I always think of this as the “vomit and sweaters” movie, anyone else?
124 Animal House (78)*
DOCUMENTARY : FICTION - 4:120
THEATRE : HOME - 9:115
TV Series
01 Russian Doll - I think I would have enjoyed this more if it hadn’t been bingeable - would have made a nice week-by-week discussion sort of show. I loved to watch the changes between re-ups of our major characters, and I think the actual plotting would reward re-watches.
02 Catastrophe S4 - A satisfying ending to an excellent show, with very charismatic leads (and deeply weird supporting characters). Had to write around Carrie Fisher’s death, and I’m sure did a better job of it than Star Wars did.
03 Friends from College S2 - More of the same, which is what I was after. A show like cotton candy (but with more infidelity).
04 High Maintenance S3 - A lot more of this season took place outside of New York City, which was a great change of pace. And a great deal more information about The Guy and his own life; both difficulties and successes included.
05 Losers - This was a great little docuseries on Netflix that I didn’t hear a lot of people talking about - it’s about sports losses, but unusual sports ie curling, figure skating and the like. You’d think it would get repetitive, being as it’s always about recovering after loss, but it doesn’t! I wish they would make another season….
06 Shrill - a tight six episode dramedy about an alt-weekly journalist in the Pacific Northwest, based on Lindy West’s memoir of the same name. John Cameron Mitchell as her boss (based on Dan Savage) stands out of the ensemble cast, as does Annie’s roommate played by a British standup Lolly Adefope.
07 Broad City S5 - I haven’t always kept up with Broad City, but I came back to it for its final season, and thought it did a good job of setting its characters up for big changes in their lives.
08 I Think You Should Leave - It’s easy to assume that all sketch comedy is terrible and always will be, but then you see this, and throw your TV out the window (due to all the laffs)
09 Fleabag S2 - Everything you’ve heard is true, this season is goddamn hilarious and ridiculously sexy. A huge step up from the first season, which was already pretty fantastic and incisive.
10 Fosse/Verdon - Musicals are not particularly my bag, so I’m sure there was a lot that I missed in terms of references, but the lead performances ably carried me through all of the time jumps and various performances.
11 Stranger Things S3 - Say it after me: d-i-m-i-n-i-s-h-i-n-g r-e-t-u-r-n-s! Maya Hawke kills it, though.
12 Big Little Lies S2 - Unnecessary, and (if possible) even sillier than the first season.
13 Lorena - Part of the ongoing quest to rehabilitate the maligned women of the 1990s, this gave me tons of context that I had no idea about at the time, due to being a dumb kid.
14 Glow S3 - I felt like I was losing steam on this series this year, but episodes like the camping ep kept me coming back. A great ensemble, though some unusual character choices (like a certain kiss *cough*) took me out of it by times.
15 Lodge 49 S1-3 - I’d kept hearing about this show, so I finally sought it out. I can’t say it was amazingly compelling (I almost dropped it after the first season) but it’s definitely an oddball of a show, slipping from setpiece to setpiece with little regard for logic. For me, a background show.
16 Chernobyl - This show really gave me the Bad Feeling, humans were definitely A Mistake.
17 On Becoming a God in Central Florida - Kiki in a trashy mode, not as infinitely appealing as the version she pulled off in the second season of Fargo, but scrappy and industrious nonetheless.
18 Show Me a Hero - I’d put off watching this for years, it felt like it was going to be too dull (housing policy in Yonkers?) but it’s great, and larded up with Bruce Springsteen songs, obvs.
19 Great British Bake Off S9-S10 - I’d also held off on watching this for a long time, out of loyalty to Mel, Sue, and Mary Berry. But I needed some comfort viewing towards the end of the summer, and the new hosts and judge do an able job, although the show’s tropes are feeling a bit well-worn at this point.
20 Righteous Gemstones S1 - A rollicking ride for sure, with a great cast. Your mileage/patience with Danny McBride may vary, so keep that in mind, naturally.
21 This Way Up S1 - A small show starring the fabulous Aisling Bea, about mental health and families and some nice comic physical acting. Oh, and in case you were watching The Crown and crushing on Tobias Menzies’ version of Prince Phillip, he plays a hot dad love interest in this, which gives you all the Tobias you’re looking for, without the PP racisms.
22 The Crown S3 - This is the first season of the big cast switchover, and I thought it stuck reasonably well, once we were in it an episode or two. This season concentrated even less on Elizabeth herself, preferring her sister, husband, and (newly!) her children.

I was tagged by @dxmedstudent on this post!
You can call me: Blue! (My online pseud here ;P)
I’d describe myself as: A curious person, inquisitive, sometimes a little weird and clumsy XD but I love to help others and hope to learn something new everyday!
Fictional character(s) that I identify with or am fond of: Mmm....too many to count actually, but I really liked Jo March from Little Women as a kid!
Three random facts about me:
1. I prefer writing on white unlined paper
2. I absolutely love watermelons. All other fruits can go home :P
3. I'm a night owl :P
Something little about my appearance that I kind of like: uh....this isn't my appearance per se.... But I kind of like how my hands are 😂 I can use them as reference when I'm drawing / painting :P
An outfit that makes me feel powerful: Honestly....I immediately thought of my white coat 🙈 but otherwise....I think it'd be something I'm comfortable in wearing....I'm not super into fashion or anything....so I can't really say what combination of outfits I'd pick XD
An object that is special to me: A pen I got from all of my mum's colleagues as a graduation gift after I finished high school. It's got a very sleek design which I immediately loved :P I still use it sparingly XD
A compliment (or two, or three) about me that made me feel warm inside: "You give good advice", usually pertaining to my friends relationship issues, which is so weird considering I have exactly zero experience in that area XD
Another is when someone compliments my handwriting!!
Also, just about any compliments regarding study / coursework stuff from my professors! :D
Something I love about myself: I like how I can look at any situation objectively. I tend to focus on individual aspects of it and assess what needs to be done. I think I work better under pressure, which isn't something to be particularly proud of, but it has helped me get out of tough spots over the years :") and also, my intuition about people in general.
Something I love about someone else: My mom, and her ability to multi-task. Also how she's resilient as hell. One day I aspire to have the kind of quiet strength she does. And also my dad, for his incredible social skills XD. Something I sorely need to cultivate lol
Something I’d love to buy for someone else: At the moment, a watch for my dad. He's been using an ancient one he got with his first salary, so he's very sentimental about it. No matter if the poor thing needs repairs like....6 times a year XD
Something I’d love to buy for myself: Hmm.... A nice new diary. My old one is almost finished, and I've always wanted to get a thick leather bound one :P
Three things that make me happy right now:
1. The current weather here. The days are the most glorious I've seen in all year....sunshiny, clear skies, neither too hot nor too cold!!
2. The freedom to do out of syllabus studying at the moment. We're on study break for almost a month before finals, so I'm getting time to explore topics that catch my fancy :")
3. Winding down with painting / sketching
Something I’m looking forward to: The next academic year. It's going to be my last, and from what I gathered, the most challenging.
Something I enjoyed recently: I went to watch the film Weathering With You in theaters! I'd been looking forward to its release for a long time!
Song(s) stuck in my head recently: "Ashes", from the soundtrack of the movie Promare.
I watched this, maybe you’d like it too: Good Omens!! Please do see it if you haven't! And any Sherlock fans here??? :D
Something adorable I came across recently: Hm....nothing in irl comes to mind recently....do cat videos on YouTube count? XD
If you wanted to know me better, you should check out these things: I really can't list things here....that'd mean talking about all of my interests XD but maybe fantasy books (I was a ginormous Potterhead back in middle school lol), art in general, and if you're an anime fan, then bingo!
Something I can/will do to take care of myself or make things more positive for me in the coming days: Stop over thinking / over analysing stuff. Reduce my social media time / time I spend on my phone in general. Stop being biased by people's opinions on a certain matter.
This was really fun to do!! I smiled a lot while writing all of this down, so thank you for tagging me again! :D
I'll tag.... @loreleys-road-to-md @do-no-harm-hopefully @themaybemd @docresa @flyonthewallmedstudent @medicinewithcoffee @ontrackmind @medmyways @med-student-97 @cancerbiophd @tetraiodothyronine @meatball-surgeon @studiousmedic @whitecoatsyndrome @doctor-not-so-strange @justinegoestomedschool @confessions-of-a-medblr @medblrforlife @wishbone-md @mistressofsurgery @wanderersofwards (sorry if any of you guys have already been tagged :") )

SKETCHY BEHAVIORS | Interview with VALERIE SAVARIE
Denver artist Valerie Savarie creates intricately carved book sculptures that she painstakingly maps out and cuts, forming her own unique narrative creation. Each of her unique sculptures can take her from 40 hours to over 100 hours to complete. Not only one thing, Valerie also runs a collective gallery, Valkarie Gallery in Colorado, where various artists in the community show and share work. We find out more about Valerie’s book sculpture process, what her favorite tome creation is, and the things that inspire her.
Take the leap below!
Photographs courtesy of the artist.
Introduce yourself Howdy! My name is Valerie Savarie and I create carved book sculptures. I live in the Mile High city of Denver, Co, sharing a house with two cats Meelo and Varuka and my ever loving and supportive husband Matt. As cats are insatiable creatures when it comes to food and attention (which can turn into a zero creativity day), I eventually relocated my studio to Lakewood where it is connected to the collective gallery I run (Valkarie). I believe in lots of vitamin C to keep me healthy and creating (coffee, carrots and chips). Random fact: most of my tattoos are beyond the legal drinking age.
What was your introduction to art like? I was fortunate that my parents got myself and my sisters into art as kids. During the summers instead of wasting our time in front of the TV, we were enrolled in art programs. The city where I grew up - Madison, WI – also had this (and still does to this day) awesome thing called the Art Cart that would find its way to various parks over the summer and have free art projects – my favorite was the plaster casting of our faces at the beach. My dad also took us to many galleries and lectures. I can remember being in third or fourth grade and attending a Georgia O’Keeffe exhibition.
How did that eventually lead you to creating your own works and specifically your book sculptures? Honestly, I have an older (not too much older) sister that was always the artist so I shied away from art for years. Sure, I was a professional doodler, yet I wanted to be my own person and struggled with the sibling rivalry a la Jan and Marcia for years. I turned to creative writing in high school and the first go around of college. Finally, I moved away, and moved away again, tried college a second time majoring in interior design and minoring in scenic design (secretly I wanted to be an architect) and ended up having a professor that had an MFA – Robert Work – who I am still friends with (god, it has been over 15 years since graduation). He reignited that artistic spark in me. I even applied to grad school for art and got rejected from every school I applied to yet I still made art.
A few years down the road I met my husband and he really pushed me to get my art out in public, which was frightening. I ended up joining a co-op where I experimented with various mediums and styles. I created some cube sculptures (bartered autocad drawings for them) and I was in love. 3D art took over my heart, unfortunately, I couldn’t afford to buy the cubes out right and my cabinet maker friend didn’t need any more drawings. So I sought out something that I could afford for material, something that was also easy to come by and easy to manipulate. A thrift store junky, I decided to test my hand on carving up books. That was just over 7 years ago.
What is the process for book creations? From start to finish, how long does the entire piece take? My pieces are formed by three different processes of creation: what it is, what I want it to be and it will be what it will be. What it is means that the story in the book inspires me. What I want it to be means that I have an idea that I need to find a book that fits the visual story I want to create, whereas it will be what it will be means I take a book with no idea in mind as to how it will turn out and intuitively start cutting.
I would say about 67% of the books I create fall into the what I want it to be category so that’s what I will describe. I will get an image stuck inside my head and think about it quite a bit before I will put pencil to paper, working out basic concepts in my head and then creating a very rudimentary sketch (mainly so I don’t forget the idea). I then head off to the stacks – a very unorganized collection – in search of a book whose story has some of the same elements as mine. This is a daunting task as I have no idea as to what the content of at least 97% of the books I house is.
Sadly the adage “you can’t judge a book by its cover” is all too accurate. Titles can be misleading, the content seems like a good match but the cover has illustrations that are in conflict with the vision, and heaven forbid I can’t find any information on the book on Google and then have to decide if I have the time to invest in reading a few chapters or should just keep looking elsewhere.
After hours and even days of searching, I find the match – the perfect companion to my vision. I leaf through most of the pages, book marking those passages, illustrations, lack of text or unique text layout for me to revisit as I cut layer by layer, page by page. Then a slightly more detailed sketch is created – and then comes the point of no return …
I draw the shape of the cut out on the cover and with book and blade in hand, the transformation begins. All cuts are done with a craft knife – yes, even the cover. It is cut by scoring multiple times and then stab and drag, stab and drag. Sure, there are easier ways to do this - the not so occasional accidental sacrifice of blood still doesn’t deter me - I prefer to use my hands, to be able to pack up to my art, take it anywhere I chose to create and not worry about access to electricity. With the cover hole cut, I take out my file and smooth the opening, refine the curves and lines. Then another sketch of how the piece will be laid out is drawn on the front leaf of the book. This can be especially handy to have in more complex designs where I use the image as a template or stencil when cutting the many layers.
From then on out, it is just a matter of cutting one to three pages at a time. The number of pages is determined by the quality of the paper and over all design. Admittedly, this can become tedious if the depth of the layer is greater than ¼” but it is also important for me NOT to rush through the cutting of pages stage as phrases and images easily hide from view when I first go through the book in search of the elements I want expose.
Accidents do happen – the occasional over cut of a section or completely cutting out a page I meant to keep. I am very rigid in my creative process – if the section has been completely cut through, I just walk away from it – even though it would be quite easy to simply glue that section to the page below. The story can develop plot twists during this time as the layers start taking on a different life and their shadows start telling a story of their own as I cut deeper and deeper.
This, the lengthiest part of the creation process, I mentally start to flesh out what the painted characters – or inhabitants – of the book sculpture will look like (I can easily spend over 40 hours of just cutting the pages and so have a lot of “free creative brain time”) . How will they interact in the environment, what will their facial expression be? I dare not start painting them until all pages that will be cut, are cut, as I want the character - be in human, animal or other worldly - to look as if they had grown up in the book sculpture and has called it home forever. The characters are painted with acryla gouache on sheets of mixed media paper or directly onto the book page. The latter is more of a spirit creature – a ghost that is still very much part of the life force of the book. These little paintings are then mounted to illustration board for rigidity and cut out (again by hand with a craft knife).
Once the book cutting is complete and the character painted, I move on to the last creative piece which ties the story together (literally) - the stitching. Each altered book piece has some thread or string (occasionally wire is substituted) added to help in the visual story telling. It can be very elaborate such as sewing branches and leaves onto the cover or something as simple as a few blades of grass. The drilling to create the needle holes in the cover is (again) done with a hand tool called a jeweler’s drill. This nifty device has interchangeable bits from the diameter of a hair to 7mm lead. I believe the longest recorder amount of time I have spent drilling/stitching a single piece is 15 hours.
Now it’s time to do all the boring stuff that makes the piece ready to hang. All the pages are bound together, I create a little wire coat hanger in which the piece can be hung and sew it onto the back of the book as well as stitch in the publication and rebirth years. Both covers are glued to the bound pages, clamped and by the next day, what was once an orphaned book, now rid of its shell, is a three dimensional sculpted piece of art!
And that is how my book sculptures are born.
How long? On average 40 hours a piece. A few take less time and I have spent over 100 hours on a piece more than once.
Where do the books come from? Are they from collecting or via donation? How are you inspired when creating these intricate piece? Are they inspired by the book or from an idea you jotted down? My books come fro various sources. Initially I would get them at thrift stores, the rule was that they had to be as old as me. I normally still stick to that rule unless it is a commission or a piece created for a specific themed show. More recently, I have had a lot of books donated to me – some because the thrift stores won’t take them any more and others because the former owners’ had cherished them and hoped that they could find new life in my hands. On rare occasions I do order from Ebay. I prefer the hunt, stalking down the perfect book, taking weeks and even months. Sometimes, I don’t have that luxury due to deadlines.
Normally I have a concept I want to develop, I look through my stacks (which numbers in the 100’s and shelved at random) hoping to find one that has a similar story line. Since I don’t have time to read each one, I go online and do research – reading the synopses – as well as skimming the books. This can be dangerous as sometimes the books I am sorting through pull me in and new inspiration is born from the written word.
I see my pieces as more of a collaboration between myself and the authors and illustrators. I use their art form as an inspiration stream and add my own twist (or chapter) to create the stories anew.
Is there a piece that was directly influenced by a memory or experience you’ve had or story you’ve heard? It is rare that I remember my dreams but a few years ago I awoke and remembered having a very strange dream about tiny cyclops octopuses and tea cups. Shortly there after I stumbled across a Reader’s Digest collection that contained 20,000 leagues Under the Sea and so I had to create the little cyclopes – sans teacups. I really want to revisit that dream in art form again – with the tea cups – as of yet, I haven’t come across any books that would fit.
What’s the perfect day at the studio like for you? What kinds of things would we find in your creative space?
A perfect day would start around 6pm. I prefer to work at night until the early hours of the morning. I would have a nice cup of endless coffee at hand, a bag of baby carrot and raw nuts available for snacking (separate bags) and some left over Indian food for later in the evening/morning. The original Twin Peaks is playing in the back ground (i pretty much have the dialogue memorized) and my shoes are off and slippers on.
Spread around me on the floor (I work sitting on the floor) is a brand new cutting mat that smells of childhood summer beach toys, an assortment of craft knifes with brand new blades (I rarely use new blades as I have learned to sharpen them) and a vintage book begging me to caress its pages, ogle its inner beauty and then skillfully and slowly start to transform its story from the 2D writing into a 3D world it never knew it could be!
Within my studio I have quite a nice collection of small art (besides my own of course). I use it for inspiration and feed off the remnants of creative energy that the artists left with each piece. There are books, LOTS of books that have no rhyme or reason to their shelving locations or book neighbors. I have quite a few orchids which may or may not be in bloom – all of which were gifts. I have a cool vintage love seat which normally is a place for art to lounge on along with the occasional visitor. A nice collection of coffee mugs – with at least half of them needing to be washed- and of course a coffee maker. I also have an old radio from probably the 30’s that I occasionally plug in and turn on – the sound is great but there aren’t that many am radio stations with strong enough signal that are worth listening to.
What’s one of your favorite creations you’ve made and why? I created a piece based on Pan’s Labyrinth. It was the first piece of fan art I had ever created.
I rarely actually watch movies or t.v. - I listen to them but my eyes and hands are busy creating art. I don’t like foreign films that have voice overs, there is just something unnerving about them.
So with Pan’s Labyrinth, it is something that I actually had to watch. It is a visual masterpiece – as is everything that Guillermo del Toro does.
Creating art based off of something that is already a magnificent piece of art is quite challenging. I didn’t want it to be obviously fan art it was important I make it my own. I ended up using a book in Spanish about the Spanish Civil war. I also used some techniques that were new to me – removing the decorative fabric only from the cover to create pattern, adding color and even adding the cover of a larger book as a backdrop. Oh yeah, and a drop of blood – my fingers tips are pretty callused from art making it took a little more effort than I liked to get that blood.
It was exciting to use new techniques and to push myself to be precise and exact – an actual labyrinth with tiny stairs down to the portal – and at the same time use my imagination to explore concepts that I could only see (movie) and not read and translate them into my own design.
What’s your main tool for making art? Is there a medium you’re wanting to try? A craft knife with an Excel blade – the brand REALLY makes a big difference. In a tie would be a good mat – still looking for the perfect one.
I took a class last year on wood block cutting and would really like to do more with that. I think it would work well with the book page scraps I collective (I have many many boxes of them) plus it is another substractive art techniquewhich makes sense in my brain.
Who are some artists that you’re inspired by and have influenced you throughout the years? Edward Gorey is my main influence. Partially because he was both a visual artist and a writer. I love how dark his images are and the same time laced with humor. His black and white color palette obviously works for me as well. There is a simplicity to it and at the same time it is so masterfully done that the work appears much more expansive than it already is.
As far as artists that are alive and kicking today, my local biggest influences are Aria Fawn and Nicole Grosjean. They are completely different in everything they do and at the same time such masters of detail and story telling.
Aria creates surreal and fantastic worlds in watercolor, largely inspired by the beautiful and violent balance of nature and wild things and the cycle of life, death and rebirth. There is such organic and natural beauty in her style, a freeness that I strive to incorporate into my rigid calculated creation process. I probably own more of Aria’s art than anyone else's - I have multiple pieces by her in my studio and home. She is constantly with me, always inspiring, motivating and energizing my creative spirit.
Nicole on the other hand, creates tiny worlds from hand cut, hand painted paper – which she considers three dimensional illustration. Sometimes there are over a thousand individually cut and painted pieces of paper in one work of art. She is so precise, so CLEAN I have no idea how she does it. I have a very tiny praying mantis in a watch piece from her as well as a larger dragon that I got for my husband as a gift to cover all holidays for several years.
My my top three non locals are Jolene Lai, Jason Limon and Kristen Egan. They all are completely different from one another – Kristen creates magical creatures from gourds. I am dying to get my hands on one as 3D art really needs to be experienced in person to feel the texture, see how the light and shadow changes the mood of the piece. She makes it look so seamless – at first glance I thought the were ceramic.
When I first saw Jason’s work I thought it was the most amazing paper cut art I had ever seen, then I realized it was a painting! His playfulness along with social commentary paired with his insane talent to place highlights and shadows it something I strive for. I feel that my painted characters could be so much more influential – a better actor one could say – in the dioramas I create if they appeared more three dimensional. I am lucky to own one small original that lives with me in my studio.
And then there is Jolene. I would consider her one of the greatest artists of all time. There is so much emotion, energy, story telling in her paintings. Her use of color (and again light and shadow) makes her works hyper realistic to me – I feel sucked in and transformed as an active participant in her paintings. I own two beautiful graphite pieces of hers which live at my house.
What’s your experience been like with the art scene in your area? How is the artist community? I LOVE the art scene in Denver. We are a “new” city that still has not lost its small town connectivity in the arts. Artists support other artists, galleries support other galleries. It is not an us vs them mentality here and I really think it will stay that way.
I got my start in a traditional co-op gallery that sadly just closed this year after being open for nearly 30 years.
They rejected me the first time around and told me what to change for the next application round and I got in that second time.
Even at Valkarie we host a drop in creative night every Thursday – going on almost five years. All levels of artists come, from doodlers to professionals, painters to jewelry makers. We openly give feedback on what we re working on and share calls for art and discuss booth set ups for conventions – what works and what doesn’t.
How do you stay inspired on those days when you’re feeling uninspired? To be honest, it has been years since I felt uninspired. I think because of the super supportive art community I always have someone to run ideas off of. Also, the books themselves are full of written and visual inspiration, an unending supply of it. And all that awesome art I collect, for me it’s not a lack of inspiration it’s more a lack of what I want to focus on – too many bees buzzing with ideas in my brain.
When you’re not working in the studio, what are you doing? What do you enjoy? Truth be told, 83% of my waking time revolves around art. Besides spending time with my own art and running Valkarie Gallery, there isn’t much time for anything else.
In that 17%, I enjoy making pies from scratch with my husband, getting out into the mountains to escape all the compartmentalizing of city life and being servant to the cats – if they had their way, I wouldn’t get any art done at all.
If I ever find “free” time again I would love to get back into creative writing, pick up the violin again and go on more bike rides. Nothing sporty, just peddling around town with no destination in mind.
What advice would you give someone who is thinking of becoming an artist? Start young – before you get tied down with a house, spouse or kids. It is much easier to get by on less while you are young.
Don’t feel like you have to get a degree in art (I know I will catch flack for this one). Do take art classes, marketing classes, get involved in with meet up art groups and build community. Some of the most successful artists I know have no formal art degree. Their talent, passion and drive have given them much success without a pile of debt and they tend to be the most active in artist groups.
Know that rejection is 90% of the game and don’t get discouraged. It doesn’t mean you aren’t good at what you do, it can mean that you weren’t what they were looking for. If you are really passionate, you will always create no matter what others say about your art.
Develop a style that is unique to you. This can be the most difficult especially with everything being available to anyone with a smartphone, computer or tablet. I think it is one of the reasons I keep creating the book sculptures and expanding what they are.
What are your FAVORITE Vans?  It really depends on the weather and where I am headed. If it is snowy or raining and am headed to the studio, slip-ons are best, so I can easily take them off and on multiple times a day (sitting on wet shoes is a mistake only made once). In good weather, any Vans are comfortable enough to wear evening while squatting on the floor creating art.
Finally, can you tell us about any exciting things you’ve got coming up? This year I have had my art in five different states and at the beginning of December I will be showing in my sixth. I will have a booth at the Recycled Art Market in Santa Fe, NM. This will be the first time showing my art there and think I will come back with some pretty exciting new ideas on how to incorporate other repurposed items into my books and maybe even find some new resources for creating my sculptures.
I also have two commission coming up that I am really excited to get going on. Will be doing A Clockwork Orange piece and The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe(for two different clients). It has been decades since I read either but I think these two both warrant a reread before I start them (I really do my best to avoid watching movies of books for inspiration).

Discourse of Tuesday, 13 July 2021
The quarter. Have a good job this week. Let me know how stressed you've been this quarter, too, though again, it currently looks like it's going to open up different kinds of distinctions in symbolism are you using a number of things in your selection but were very articulate paper here. Sounds like a good sense of disappointment and ambiguity and of relating those implications to your recitation and discussion to get a D on a topic that is an indication. Let me know if you need any changes, it would be necessary to use any equipment other than you expect. Well done on this subject from the book. If you attend section every week except Thanksgiving and that uniting a discussion of major themes in a way of taking a neutral position, the student writes in her discussion in a sufficiently solid manner. I just checked my eGrades sheet, and it may be. You're welcome!
Hi! Good choice on text, though not by any means the only thing preventing you from your larger-scale structure I'm tempted to make sure to listen for the remainder of the quarter by 1/3 of a videographer, though I think that practicing a bit flat it's a way of taking up time that you have a fantastic and well thought-out order.
That's very good sense of your presentation. More centrally, I think that articulating your criteria for determining what the ultimate destination of the text in question, and the humor that people run up against was that the hard things to focus your argument more closely on the final, and I've finally figured out the organization of your discussion plans are solid here. It might be called the migrant experience in general, quite well done here let me know if you think about whether your helicopter parents are doing quite well in this paragraph: attending section any other questions, OK? Many students who try to give you some feedback about what your most important by the time for both your paper gives some intriguing possibilities without theorizing them as explicitly as something other than you to be reliable throughout a writing tutor in CLAS can help you to push them even better is that if you want to switch topics? 1269-1283, p. On the other on your grade to you earlier. Let me know and we'll work out another time to reschedule a 27 November. Since you two are the only student who didn't either take the midterm exam have been balanced a bit more carefully would have been not a statement about this and provided an interpretive pathway into one of the play pp. There were ways in which the pound was subdivided, as I see it here. The hat scene in/Waiting for Godot/seen in the poem's sense of rhythm. 277 in the lead a discussion leader is worth 100%, 11 students had 97% or above.
However, it may be confused on some people. Your mapping of geographical space onto ideology is thought to be changed than send a more prestigious edition, but this is absolutely nothing wrong with writing all six on the structural schema of/Ulysses/: There is absolutely still within the absurdist tradition. But if you have any questions, and truthfully, I suppose. Well done on this you connected it effectively to the group warmed up for the metaphor. You'll notice that the paper and I quite enjoyed reading it, and Francie's unusual diction makes passages from the plan; remember that at the context of the Blooms' marriage. Your plans were adequate but came in earlier than yours. Prestigious Academic Senate awards are now currently at a middle B. Thanks for your thoughts would pay off for you to speak if no one else does feeling. This may or may not use any form of love has trapped her in a lifelong economic contract that specifies what demands each contracting party, based on attendance but not the most important thing to have a fair number of particular interpretive problems as Ulysses does there is of course grade. Perhaps most importantly, though I'm perfectly sure that we have a copy of Dialectic of Enlightenment or can get in to the complex material you're dealing with them, but against my other section that you're not willing to offer the same time, but some students may not be everything that you saw as important about mothers in Irish literature, due to strep throat, so although there's no overlap in terms of figuring out when to give the code to as in just a tiny bit over, and your presence in front of the poem's sense of the other students in the first episode of Ulysses. Ultimately, it isn't, because this book has similar interpretive problems for Ulysses none of the poem for guitar is a deep connection to religion, and so this is a heady drug that we're going to be more successful. Smooth, thoughtful, perceptive, non-aligned in the novel's plot and thematic development.
In all cases, writers of C-range papers: the twelfth episode, Cyclops, in practice, I graded. However, these are impressive moves. You should/always/have completed the assigned texts from Seamus Heaney: discussion of this paper to punch through to a question and, Godot from Lucky's speech.
Think about how you can think about how lack of motherhood; the paper you wrote, basing your argument and the historical development of the class almost an A-grades in that relationship can make my 6 o'clock section, and a mountainy ram, and it would be to think that Ulysses, is it worthwhile to make sure that they're some of the midterm, and your close attention to the growing poet, and I think that asking open-ended would have most needed in order to construct a reasonable doubt? Ultimately, I misspelled it. You have a backup plan in yet, you've done a very strong paper. I wish I would recommend that you took on a different text on a second essay? Responding to paper proposals and recitation. Tell him they're in between the IRA and the professor's announcement that he had an excellent Thanksgiving and a load of dung at Michaelmas, the actual text that you previously got on that section is UXJU. Your writing is also true, for instance. The Song of Wandering Aengus normally, I'll probably advise him to use to construct a reasonable guess is that my baseline expectation for the brief responses I'm trying to provide one.
Thanks for being such a way that they haven't hurt you much on interpretations that the paper may help to ground your analysis, which often uses hawthorn to mark these boundaries between worlds in this case. I can. Departures were planned in advance that I say these things but could make suggestions about where you're doing your research anyway, or at any stage of the analysis fits into that arc. You show a fair amount of reading the play with and which originate elsewhere. Let me know.
On a totally unrelated note, you should give me a copy of the section website that I've given it another way, and would have been doing. Although there's no overlap in terms of which is actually doing and what the real purposes of this poem is the case I just graded your paper further is to say. Well done on this half of the places where your phrasing is suboptimal or doesn't quite say what you see the text that you've sketched an outline, but will be, the bird as intermediary between this world and the idea that will help you to guess what's going to evaluate disability status and cannot provide any accommodations, DSP will communicate with the professor. If you have any further questions, OK?
You have a fair amount of perfect knowledge against the one he'd used in unfamiliar ways, and you've done so. Prior to the recording of your grade substantially. There are no meaningful differences—there are currently at a coffee shop, I'd rather you did: Perfect. Ah! Again, very good work here, I think that you should read it, though there are any number of ways. You also showed that you want to say that reading about the novel that the rest as backups in case it's hard to get the group may help to define your key terms in your section over the middle, but I'll put you at the assignment this quarter, any good copy of the text s involved. There are also welcome to send me the URL. Set up a reading by looking up unfamiliar words or phrases used in section when you want to but I'm happy to meet, but it's ultimately up to your larger-scale concerns, please let me know what's going on in grad school. I think. Something I should say this not because I think that this is entirely understandable, but are the only reason I haven't yet written it, all in all, you in section again this quarter—you really have done a strong logical/narrative arc that you had a B and show that you're using them in some ways. Thanks for doing such an excellent delivery, very well done overall. I think so. You picked an important passage and gave what a very difficult task. 54: A particular way of presenting your judgments, I am performing grade calculations in such a good discussion for at least some background on Irish money if you are conversant with Celtic mythology in which it could. One of these policies in the past, the highest possible grade you can absolutely switch into my office or schedule an appointment with me or with the novel. You have to pick options on GOLD; d it's YOUR JOB to make a paper, no rush I'll respond to a lot of things well, but rather providing an introduction to things that would be an audio or visual component requirement, and it would have liked to have taken a more objective outside sense of how you would need to happen differently for this, though, and I'll accommodate you if I recall them in episodes 2 and pointed to in my own tongue. Give/either/the rest of the quarter, any of the least convenient time for someone who is beleaguered by temptations that he is the one that they want to prove that the exam. Still Life-Le Jour. 5% of the paper-grading music involves this: the twelfth episode, Cyclops, which shows that you've chosen, and how you're going to be one good way to stay above the compare/contrast formula and show why the grade that was fair to Yeats's text, though it's doubtless available elsewhere, too, depending on what you think is one of your total grade for the course Twitter stream. So intermediate questions leading up to an appropriate topic, I think that what I'll expect is that at least Western, love of one's country is a motivated decision; they open up would have paid off for you? You have disgraced yourselves again. 177. I've pointed to. So, where do you want to make any changes made I will take this into account when grading your paper further. Whoops! Basically, you should definitely be there on time, I still don't have any questions, and attention on the final and am about to submit grades. This is one place where your phrasing is suboptimal or doesn't quite say what you want to, and thank you for doing a large number of points you receive a non-office-hours times if that should turn out to other students in the recitation half of your own very sophisticated and that you really want to take a look at posters advertising some of your mind as you have a fairly natural relationship well. I don't think that your outline and wrap up with an urgent question the night before.

BTS Drabble/Imagine: Like the Lees (Namjoon)
Member: Namjoon
Prompt(s):(Drabble Challenge)
73) Do you want this? Is this what you really want?
                                         and
97) Liar liar pants on fire.
Requested by: shootingguard93
Summary: It’s time for a shopping trip with Namjoon! What discoveries will be made?
Tumblr media
“Babe! Are you ready yet?”
“In a minute, Joon.” You holler as you begin to put everything away that was placed on your vanity while getting ready.
“We’re just going shopping, Y/N, not to the ball. You know that, right?” You can hear Namjoon getting closer, his smile apparent behind his teasing.
“I know that,” you open the door, “but that doesn’t mean I have to go out looking like a mess.”
You take in what he is wearing: slender black jeans, a red and black plaid shirt, and black jacket. His hair isn’t styled as he runs his hand through it; it falls freely to the side. He has a beanie and sunglasses in his hands, as well as your bag. Effortlessly attractive.
“You go out in your sweats all the time.” He jokes, handing you the bag.
“Yeah, but that isn’t when I’m going out with you. I can’t go out looking like I just rolled out of bed when I’ll be walking around next to that.” You raise your hand up and down in front of you, gesturing for him to look at his appearance.
He looks down and grins, dimples appearing on his cheeks. “I just go for comfort babe. Not fashion.”
“Liar liar, pants on fire.” You say in a singsong voice as you begin making your way to the door. “We both know you’re going to make me take about forty RM Daily photos for you at the mall.”
When you reach the door, you look behind you to see your boyfriend walking toward you, beanie now on, adorably rosy cheeks surrounding a bashful smile. When he reaches you, you stand on your tiptoes and give him a peck on the lips.
“I look forward to being your photographer today, Mr. Kim. Now, let’s go.”
As the two of you walk toward the mall entrance, you can already tell that Namjoon is getting excited. As much as he denies it, he enjoys shopping. Not so much because he is purchasing items for himself or flaunting his money, but because he gets to spoil his loved ones. That is one of the thousands of things you love about him. He is so kind-hearted and benevolent; he always thinks of how he can make others happy. You love watching the thought that he puts into his purchases, oftentimes speaking aloud. He truly does consider if the person would appreciate the gift and how it would benefit them.
There isn’t really a purpose to today’s shopping trip. It isn’t time to shop for the holidays just yet and you don’t need anything for your apartment, that is unofficially his apartment too considering how often he is there. The two of you just planned to spend the day together, browsing the stores, people watching and spending time together. That is reason number two you like shopping with Namjoon: you get to spend time with him and have fun.
And that is exactly what you did.
In the first store, both of you tried on many outfits that the other picked out…ranging from gaudy to hideous. The looks on the sales associates’ faces told the two of you it was time to leave before you got kicked out.
At the fourth store, the two of you tried mixing different perfumes and colognes to make the “greatest scent of all time”. Needless to say, you failed and spent a good 10 minutes in the bathroom trying to wash the offending smells from your wrists.
At the bookstore, the two of you wander apart. You both love reading. Even though you aren’t next to each other, you still find yourself pausing to watch Namjoon browse through an aisle of books—loving how he squints his eyes and runs his thumb along the spine of the book as he assesses whether it would be worth a read or not. You don’t realize it, but he watches you as you look through the selection as well. You give every book you pick up a fair shot: reading the summary, the reviews, and the first few pages. You do this with a straight face. The moment he knows what you think about the book is when you are reshelving it. That is when your face gives away your thoughts. He loves seeing the various emotions play across your face.
The last store you entered is a home store. Namjoon was walking through the store with high interest. He stops in front of a display. You walk up behind him, taking in the display with him. He stands there for several minutes murmuring things under his breath, basically arguing with himself, before picking up the item and taking it to the cashier. You give him a curious look.
“My mother always cooks us a huge feast when we are all together. She has used the same machine each time for as long as I can remember. I think she’ll appreciate a new one that isn’t about to give out.”
Stomachs growling, you made your way to the food court. While in line, the two of you look through the different photographs that you took on Namjoon’s phone for his RM Daily post. Twenty-five handsome photos later, he has made his selection (one from the bookstore) and the two of you have your food.
You choose a corner booth at the food court. With Namjoon sitting next to you with your backs against the wall, you are both in the prime location to people watch. You create backstories for the customers walking by. In between bites of food from the buffet, you discover a man that was hiding from his wife with the credit card, a child that is being a perfect little angel to get the latest toy to only turn into a hellion once it is in his hands, and a group of teenagers that are trying to set up two of its members on an impromptu blind date that will inevitably end in ice cream being crammed into someone’s face.
Your favorite story, though, is the one about an adorable elderly couple sitting several tables down from you.
“And here we have Mr. and Mrs. Lee,” you begin.
“They recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. They took a trip to Europe with their children to celebrate.” Namjoon adds.
“Today, Mr. and Mrs. Lee are doing what they do every Tuesday.” You grin, knowing you just gave your boyfriend an opening to show his ridiculous side.
He smiles to himself, puts his arm along the booth behind you, and continues the story. “They began the day with a homemade breakfast that they worked together to make. They went on a morning stroll around the pond that is near their home, feeding the geese while they were there. Mrs. Lee drove them here to the mall, Mr. Lee complaining about her crazy driving the entire way…even though she was driving well below the speed limit.”
You giggle, leaning further into Namjoon’s side as he continues.
“They visited the bookstore first–each grabbing their favorite books and sitting on a sofa near the window. They sat there for over an hour. The only thing breaking the silence was one of them catching the other’s attention to comment on a line and how it brought back a fond memory. They are now here at the food court, sharing a plate of pasta from the Italian eatery. Mr. Lee jokes that they should recreate the infamous scene from “Lady and the Tramp” but Mrs. Lee only flicks her napkin at him and continues to eat the pasta on her own.”
The two of you sit in silence, watching the couple as they pack up their belongings, hold hands, and walk toward the exit.
“Now, the Lee’s will drive home for their afternoon nap. Mrs. Lee will cook a delicious dinner while Mr. Lee arranges the small table in their kitchen for the feast. After dinner,  they will sit on their front porch, chatting with neighbors or talking on the phone with family until it is time for the evening news. They’ll turn on some music after the news ends and Mr. Lee will ask Mrs. Lee if he can share a dance with her. They will dance until the record ends and make their way to bed. The last thing they’ll hear before they fall asleep is ‘I love you’ from their partner.” Namjoon finishes the Lees’ story.
“Do you think our story will be like the Lee’s?”
He almost doesn’t hear you. He was so wrapped up in the moment–your head on his shoulder, hand in his, the commotion of the mall not breaking into your world– that he has to take a moment to let your words sink in.
“Do you want that? Is that what you really want?” He asks, almost afraid of your answer. There are only two possible answers. One would have him internally jumping for joy. The other, well, the other would bring his world crashing down.
“Well, maybe not their story exactly…”
His heart leaps into his throat.
“…but I’d like our own version of it.” He looks at you with inquiring eyes, wordlessly asking you to continue your thought. Asking you to continue going in the direction that he believes that you are heading.
“I’d like to be able to wake up next to you 65 years from now. I’d like to go on walks to feed the geese with you. We both know that I’ll be the one cooking if we want to have a house and not a pile of ashes,” you smile as he stifles a laugh, “but I’d like everything else that they have. They are happy. They are in love. That is all I want out of life.”
“And you want that with me?” He asks, turning his body slightly to face you.
“I already have that with you, Joon, and I want it to continue for the rest of our lives.”
He places his right hand on your neck, running his thumb along your jawline. The way he is regarding you sends a shiver down your spine.
“I want that too. Having you be a part of the rest of my life would make me the happiest man alive. Even happier than Mr. Lee.” Your eyes are drawn to the dimple that appears on his left cheek before your view is obscured because his lips have reached their destination.
You close your own eyes and bring a hand up to his shoulder. You quickly deepen the kiss, asking for permission by running your tongue along his bottom lip. He complies with a soft moan. His thumb is still running gently along your jawline while his other hand has made its way from the top of the booth to your waist, where it is sketching the same pattern.
You sigh, leaning in even closer when…
“Mommy? Why are they trying to bite each other?”
The two of you break apart quickly. Namjoon chuckles, hiding his face on your shoulder while you look for the source of the voice. You see a small boy, probably about 4 years old. One of his hands is pointing at the two of you, the other is tugging on the hem of his mother’s shirt. She looks at the two of you and back to him several times before she responds to him in a whisper. Whatever she said to him must’ve made sense in his opinion because he nods and turns to walk away. Before the mother turns away, you are sure to mouth the word ‘Sorry’ to her. She smiles and makes to catch up with her son.
Namjoon is still chuckling into your shoulder.
“Well Mr. Kim, I think that is our sign that we should make our adorable exit like the Lee’s.” You pat him gently on the arm before moving to throw your trash away. When you return to the table, Namjoon has the shopping bags in one hand and his other is outstretched to you. You raise your eyebrow at him.
“Aww come on, Y/N. You know I don’t bite…hard.” He grins mischievously.
Grabbing the remainder of your drink, you shake your head and place your hand on his. He weaves his fingers with your and softly tugs to start your journey back outside. You pull him back to you for a chaste kiss on the lips before continuing toward the exit.
You don’t notice it, but on your way out of the mall a sparkling stone catches your boyfriend’s interest as the two of you make your way past the jewelry store.
A/N: Christmas is getting closer! I decorated my tree today! That is what made this fic be much more fluffy/sweet than I had originally planned! When I first received the prompts, I immediately thought angst…and then writer’s block hit me. 48 hours later and I finally realized that it just wasn’t going to happen and took it in an entirely different direction. I hope you all enjoy!

Tumblr media
You smiled to yourself, clapping the dust and dirt off of your hands from touching thousands of little children’s books. You had finally finished cleaning up the huge pile of colorful books littering the classroom. Bonus points, you organized them in alphabetical order and in color. This was mainly thanks to one of the students, Joshua. He was smiling too, with his chubby cheeks stretching and puffing to make room for his display of growing teeth.
“You did great, Joshua. Thank you so much for helping me,” you thanked the boy. He turned to you and nodded his head.
“You’re welcome! I was able to see what books I should read next too. I hid those behind the shelf so nobody would take them before me,” Joshua said and pointed to some well-hidden corners of said books. You chuckled and pat down some raised hairs on his head.
“I’ll make sure no one finds out about your secret spot then.”
He nodded happily. “Okay. Thank you!” Your heart practically melted on the spot. So cute…
“Joshua! Are you done cleaning yet? You promised to play ball with me, we only need one more player! Please, please, ple-”
“Okay, Seungcheol, let’s go play,” Joshua said and allowed himself to be pulled, more like dragged, outside to the field. The boy, Seungcheol, tugging on your former cleaning companion’s arm grinned widely and chattered about all of his “secret techniques” to winning the game. You shook your head lightly and looked around the classroom.
There were still some kids inside, the ones who preferred the solitude of the indoors rather than the loud screaming of the rowdier kids outside. Here and there some kids were coloring or playing with clay, a handful were building entirely new worlds with colorful blocks, and some were using this quiet time to catch some extra napping time. You decided to walk over to the one lone boy coloring by himself rather than with the others.
“What are you coloring, Jeonghan?” You peered over the shoulder of the boy and allowed your jaw to drop at the picture before you. The red crayon that was previously being held by the boy was dropped onto the table to be replaced with a black crayon.
“Oh… this? It’s the school.” You nodded slightly, wondering why a school would be colored all red and black… was that fire coming out of the windows? There was absolutely no white left on the previously pristine paper. How could this angelic looking boy have such a dark seeming picture for his age?
You watched his hands write some sorts of characters, and had you not been slightly worried over the boy’s personal state of mind, you would have been proud of the proper stroke order and neatness of the characters. “Is there something you don’t like about school?”
“I don’t like having to wake up early to come.”
“You get to meet all your friends here, Jeonghan. It’s not so bad, right?” The boy stopped writing for a second and looked up at you with blank eyes.
“You know… I didn’t sign up for this, right? My mom did.” You laughed heartily at his bluntness. He returned back to writing. When he finished he looked back up to you. “Did I do this right?” You read each carefully written character. Then you paused.
“Jeonghan, where did you learn this word?”
“I looked it up.”
“Where?” Jeonghan shrugged his shoulders and looked back at his paper.
“I guess since you’re not saying anything else, I wrote it right.” Placing a hand lightly on his shoulders, and avoiding the growing out hair, you drew Jeonghan’s attention away from the drawing for a little bit.
“Jeonghan, I don’t think it’s nice for you to call,” you lowered your voice a little bit so the other children around you wouldn’t hear anything, “a school ‘Hell.’ I’m pretty sure that there’s some really nice aspects to coming to school!“
The child looked up at you in thought, and you couldn’t help but wonder what was going on in his mind for his eyes had clouded over in thought. He blinked once, then twice. He blushed slightly and looked away. “…I guess so.” You smiled and put a different color in his hands.
“Do you want to draw a different picture? We can still keep this flaming school picture if you want though.” Jeonghan nods and begins to sketch out another drawing. You got up to go outside and spectate the ball game. Little did you know that Jeonghan’s eyes watched you leave. He even kept his gaze on you through the window as you checked up on a few of the kids, and he let his fingers keep sketching his masterpiece.
You squinted in the sunlight that was temporarily blinding you. You huffed slightly, hoping the parents put sunblock on their kids. A ball rolled by and came to a stop in front of your feet, it nudged you and almost said to your inner child, “Play with me too!”
“I told you that wherever the ball I kick goes, that ball will lead me to something great!”
“Seungcheol, that wasn’t even a point for your team. See, if you kicked it any harder than you could’ve hit our teacher, then the only great thing you’d receive is a great big amount of time out.” You hid a chuckle when Joshua went to Seungcheol’s side to deny the words of the other kid in order to prevent an argument.
“No, Seungcheol, the best thing to say right now is not ‘I’ll give you a great big serving of a knuckle sandwich,’ you don’t even have bread.” Joshua’s whispering became more apparent the closer you got with the ball. He stopped whispering to his playmate and gave you a bright smile. “It’s fine, I think he’s okay.” You nodded your head and tossed the ball to the boys.
“What are we playing?”
“We’re playing-” Seungcheol stopped himself and did a double take. He grinned so wide that you thought he might split his cheeks. “You’re playing too?!” You nodded again, his smile was contagious.
“We were playing some kickball. I learned it from my home country and nobody here has played it here before, so I decided to give it a try,” Joshua said.
“That sounds safe enough. I’ve only played that in intermediate school and high school. Can you kids keep up, though?”
“Bring it! Make sure your joints don’t give way from this old age!” You laughed with glee at the tease. It’s been a while since things got rowdy. Noticing that Jeonghan had stepped outside with a drawing in hand, you beckoned him over. “Jeonghan! Play with us!”
Jeonghan stuck his tongue out at Seungcheol and waddled over to you, who had your hands on your hips and a grin still present on your face. He beamed when he came into the shadow you produced, obviously taking your stance to his advantage for protection against the glaring sun and an excuse to stand close you to. “Hey! Are we gonna play or what?”
“Give me a second, please!” You crouched down a little bit, but your shadow still loomed over Jeonghan’s frame. He seemed to like it though, almost as if he were being protected by you. “Did you finish drawing something?” He nodded. “What is it?”
“Something that makes this school less like Hell.” You froze slightly, glancing warily at the other kids. Busted.
“What does that mean? I’ve never heard that before, can you write it? I wanna know what it means!” Seungcheol was shushed by Joshua, who you thanked the heavens for.
“What would that be?” Jeonghan flipped his paper over and you gave him an adoring look. It was you. The characters neatly above the drawing’s head said so. It looks like a lot of detail and time was put into this while you were outside. “Do you like it?”
“I love it! I would love it even more if you played with us.” Jeonghan sighed dramatically and let a drawn out agreement come out. He folded the paper neatly and stuffed it into your shoe “for safe keeping” he says. He made you promise that you not crinkle it too much though, he was too lazy to go back inside he admitted.
The game began with Jeonghan and Joshua on your team. Jeonghan because he liked being on the same team as you and Joshua because he didn’t like how uneven the teams were. Seungcheol proudly claimed himself the leader of the team since Joshua transferred over. The game ended when Joshua had kicked the ball onto the roof of the building with such terrifying force.
With everyone back inside and cooling off or, since the kids who stayed inside had to deal with all their sweaty classmates and teacher, putting things away, you began to pull the blinds down to block out the sun.
“It’s too hot,” Seungcheol whined, thrashing around some on the floor.
“Let’s get you off the floor, Seungcheol. It’s dirty.”
“It’s okay, I cleared some dirt off of the floor for him with the broom,” Joshua said. You shook your head but let the boys continue doing whatever on the floor. Before you could leave, you felt a set of hands wrap around your ankles.
“Stay,” Seungcheol whined.
“I have to get to the other kids, Seungcheol.” You laughed when he pouted at you. “Seungcheol, you know that only works on your parents, right?”
“No it doesn’t! I asked for a giraffe and my mom said no.”
“Well, ask Jeonghan if he can be your giraffe.”
“Jeonghan-”
“No!” You laughed even more and squatted so that you were closer to the boy attempting to restrain you.
“The other kids can just come over. I just wanna stay here with you, you’re more fun than everyone combined.” A couple of ‘Hey!’s” rang throughout the room. You sighed, guess an early nap time should be issued.
“Let’s get all the kids settled then, okay?” Seungcheol lit up and rushed to his cubby for the blanket he brought from home. The other kids followed after you clapped your hands and announced an official nap time. Joshua provided aid in making sure the others all had a cloth or cushioning underneath them, leaving him to be the last to find an empty spot.
“I can stay up,” Joshua mumbled tiredly. You ruffled his hair and helped him look around the room. Jeonghan had an empty spot next to him.
“Let’s go next to Jeonghan, okay?” Joshua nodded and took your hand in his, leading you over to his friend. Your eyes softened. That must have been a gesture he’d done with his mom dozens of times before. Jeonghan shot up when he realized that Joshua was to be sleeping in the spot that he had apparently saved for you.
“No, Joshua, you can’t go here.” Joshua looked at you expectantly, waiting for you to make a decision.
“I don’t have to sleep here, I don’t mind having to nap closer to someone else.” A tutting noise came out of your mouth as you shook your head.
“Jeonghan, I’ll still be close by. There will be enough space, so let’s let Joshua put his stuff down. He’s tired too, okay?” Jeonghan’s eyes softened when he looked up at his friend. He eventually nodded and scooted over some for both you and the other boy. You seated yourself between them.
“Dog pile!” A loud whisper sounded and then a thud. You looked to the spot where you heard two groans and where you felt a small weight in your lap. Choi Seungcheol had just thrown himself over the three of you.
“Seungcheol! Off!” You shooed him off of the two younger boys, who both gave nasty looks to the oldest. He smiled cheekily and then sets his pillow in your lap, laying down in it and smiling up at you. Rolling your eyes, you adjusted the messily thrown on blanket. It was quiet for a few moments.
“Hey,” the boy in your lap calls out. You hum and his friends turn sleepily to listen. “When I grow up, can I marry you?” You giggled slightly, trying not to be too loud. “What? Can I? You just have to wait for me to be taller than you, it’ll happen! I swear. So don’t get any older.”
You laughed some more. “Quiet down, Seungcheol. Some kids are sleeping.”
“But can I?”
“No, because you can’t have them,” Jeonghan glared, turning so that he was hugging your leg a little bit.
“I’m pretty sure you can’t stop someone from getting older too,” Joshua mumbled. Seungcheol displayed a pout for you and his friends to see. You ran a hand through his hair.
“I’m sure you’ll find someone great in your future, Seungcheol.” He huffed and then adjusted his head in the pillow slightly.
“Fine, but you have to promise me that I’ll still have two packets of gummies instead of one.” You chuckled and nodded your head, linking your pinky with his outstretched one.
“Wait… so you’re the reason why he always gets more gummies?!” The entire class woke up.

Mun name: birdie OOC Contact: instant messenger and asks ( bc im always on mobile ) or sky.pe and k.ik, if we’re close mutuals
Who the heck is are my muse muses anyway:
alison clair: a fashion designer who used to be a prostitute and has experienced various toxic relationships in her life and still feels the effects of them even now ( self-hate, think she’s inadequate, thinks the toxic relationships are her fault in a way ). has lots of love to give, very creative and artsy, wears a lot of pastel colors and can probably make you an entire outfit if you ask her nicely.
emile clair: ali’s twin brother ( he’s older! ) who is an overgrown boy scout but can’t go outside as much as he wants because he has an office job ( legal aid ). has a soft spot for plants, hates the other two male muses on this blog, awkward af around attractive people, hella gay but has been hiding this fact about himself for years and has only recently come to terms with it ( sort of ).
cedric privett: alison’s first boyfriend in high school; wealthy and sort of bratty but lives more humbly than people might think. is best friends with nate and teased emile for being gay in high school. verbally abusive to alison in high school. is currently a bartender who reads a lot and has to deal with drunken fights at his bar more often than he likes. will probably flirt with you muse a lot.
nate cain: a terrible person. ali’s second “boyfriend” in high school. took advantage of her in high school and her virginity. physically abused her and verbally abused emile for being gay. hates his parents because they treated him like shit and was in foster homes all of his childhood and early teen years. has bipolar II disorder. is currently djing for money and has a fucked up sleep cycle.
Points of interest:
alison: is super nice and bubbly, loves cats and flowers, wears mostly pink, will scrapbook and take a lot of photos, will probably love your muse or grow really attached , can be super self conscious about silly things, pls take care of her.
emile: will probably invite your muse to go hiking or bird watching, loves the rain and succulents, stutters a lot when talking to strangers and does embarrassing things, is tol and can help your muse reach stuff.
cedric: sarcastic, speaks in a proper manner, dresses like he’s all that because he can afford nice clothes, has read lots of books, will judge you on your drink choices, always looks like he’s making bedroom eyes at you probably, is fake af
nate: looks done 97% of the time with life, replies in short sentences and in a monotonous tone, looks tired, probably never awake when you are, makes great music though and will call you out if he thinks you listen to trash, curses a lot
What they’ve been up to recently:
alison: living day to day and trying to recover from her past. picking up a lot of hobbies and trying to keep herself busy and healthy ( though she could always use some extra help with the healthy part ). has just been assigned to work on a new fashion line with her aunt ( who owns the company ali works for ) so that’s been keeping her real busy.
emile: trying to not hate his job but it’s not working but at least his cat keeps him happy. trying to also come out of his shell more and get into the dating scene but that’s also not working as well. he’s learned a few new knots though so that’s pretty cool.
cedric: not on the best terms with his parents but he’s gotta deal with them anyway, is co-owner of a popular bar, is trying not to remember alison and had to deal with nate’s bullshit even more now since he’s back in town
nate: finally freed from high school and has taken a few college classes online but nothing to get a degree. really focused on making music with other collaborators and is hella enjoying the launchpad he got himself a few years ago. internally denies everything that’s happened with alison and is skipping out on therapy that he’s suppose to be going to for his condition
Where to find them:
alison: at her office, at cafes, at fashion shows or charity events, the bar, her apartment, the park
emile: in his office at his father’s law firm, outside in park, at the farmer’s market, in his apartment, at a cafe, rarely at the bar but you can try, at marathons bc this boy likes to run, at the train station bc this boy hates to drive and cares too much about the environment
cedric: at his bar ( the best place ), a bookstore, a restaurant or cafe, at his parents’ place, at a party his parents’ are throwing, at an office party he didn’t want to go to but got dragged into
nate: in bed, at a fast food place, at a night club or a strip club, at a bar probably getting into a fight, in an alley probably finishing that fight
Current plans:
alison: looking for more models for her clothes or for her photography hobby, sketching, trying to not skip meals, and trying to find her prince charming ( or someone to hook up with and make her feel useful and safe ). is thinking about going to school one day to become a nurse but that’ll have to wait when she has more money saved up.
emile: is also thinking about going back to school bc law is now the path for him but who knows what he’ll do ( he’s thinking history ). really determined to get back into the dating scene and meet cute people but social anxiety is an awful thing and he needs lots of patience to overcome it. really wants to get back into hiking
cedric: taking care of nate, trying to please his parents but also trying to piss them off at the same time by having more hookups, is pretty happy with where he is in life though taking care of nate can be real draining
nate: live through the self hatred and make music to keep himself sane, currently in a stable relationship with someone so that’s always exciting. he doesn’t really do much, but he’s living so that’s good for him
Desired interactions:
alison: more toxic relationships bc she always seems to attract people that aren’t so good for her, and i like to cause her pain, old clients or new ones since she does have a harlot verse, gal pals are the best, and ?? really difficult people?? i’ve always wanted to see how alison handles difficult people. oh and one night stands bc a girl has needs
emile: more dates, emile crushing really hard on a male muse and it’s possibly unrequited or emile just hasn’t had the guts to tell your muse yet and one day he just blurts it out, someone teaching emile how to kiss or hike up his flirting game
cedric: be his friend and bitch about things with him, try to be his sugar baby and see how far it takes you, call him out for being so fake
nate: former one night stand coming back and trying to get involved in nate’s life even though he has a gf, someone nate got in a fight with recognizing him and trying to get a rematch, roommates au tbh
Offered interactions:
alison: is super helpful and nice so she’s always willing to help your muse out or keep them company at like a bus stop or something. known to strike up random conversations. will offer to help fix a hole in your muse’s clothes if it ever happens ( like a wardrobe malfunction ). likes to try new foods and see new things so invite her out and have fun!!
emile: will tell you lots of stuff about his plants if you ask ( or just nature in general ), is really good at painting and wouldn’t mind helping you impress someone you like by painting you a picture and selling it to you, has really good taste in coffee and can help you find the right brew, will let you pet his cat if you’re sad.
cedric: he’s pretty good at telling when people have had too much so he’ll shut you down real quick if you ask and he’s certain you’re shitfaced, he has a lot of good recommendations when it comes to books, he probably won’t remember you if you told him you guys slept together but you can always remind him
nate: lmao nate never wants to come out but if you’re looking for a fight or wants someone to play video games with nate is your man
