That's crazy that Danny Trejo got a meal at Del Taco now.
Give a damn if the city socked him out earlier this year, true L.A. spirit right there - still hustlin' even in the face of public embarassment.

*Always wanted to buy stock in an L.A. restaurant like how Nip has that Fatburger at Crenshaw Mall. Who knows maybe the stock will go so far down I'll wake up one morning and my share will give me controlling stock ... If that were the case, I'm bringing back Del's Dollar Menu.

1992 #CVReview
Tumblr media
What a good waste of ten dollars. "1992" is yet another film set during the L.A. riots, but I'd rather watch Halle Berry bedwench to Daniel Craig in "Kings" again than to have spent the money I did to see this picture. Tyrese spent the film portraying a golem that protects asian store owners and Beverly Hills adjacent 2 in my old Crenshaw stomping grounds. The obvious problem with this is that Tyrese essentially portrays a boomer with boomer idealogies that do not have the opportunity of Pan-Africanism but the reservations of 60's Civil Rights activism through intergration which left a sense of self-hatred within the U.S. negroid population. First "Cocaine Bear" and now this? Ray Liotta starred in some really shitty films before his death, and once again was the highlight of the cast. The rest of the cast comprised of Antoine Bey who portrayed Tyrese's son - reminded me too much of Shaft's son in the most recent addition to the series : weak, crying sobbing and annoying; too annoying to actually want to see survive. Which was an affliction that all the characters including Liotta's suffered from - none of the characters were likeable or had any redeeming qualities. I wanted to feel for Tyrese's struggle as a single father, but I couldn't empathize because I am not that. I wanted to empathize for the protagonists' son, but he was too much of a crybaby for me to get behind him with my own experience growing up in South Central. The race-baiting that surrounded the film didn't click with me since I do not see the U.S. as a home but as an origin point. How could I as a negroid ever recognize a European country as a home? So the Rodney King paralells to George Floyd - drug addicts, mudshark chasers, shit I dont identify with - did not rouse me like it would have in my teens. If anything, "1992" showed me how much I've grown since leaving the LAnd nearly a decade ago. I wondered why there was a modern Snoop record at the top of the film when it was set in '92 and a "Chronic" record would have opened the film more appropriately. But as the film wrapped with the source piece of "The Chronic" 's classic single "Li'l Ghetto Boy", I recognized the new Snoop piece was fitting. Because no matter what, L.A. will never change. And that's not a good thing, when this weekend there were riots in my LAnd over a shot down repairations bill. It seems that's all my fellow Angeleno's know how to do - tear up my city of origin, but never doing enough to lead a full insurrection. It's a pitiful, just like this film was. When I saw the Death Row logo and Tyrese on the bill, I felt proud to be supporting Afro-centric cinema but when for the duration of the film the only people that were getting mutilated and murdered were negroids and the people that were getting defended and commitung atrocities scott-free until the final half hour, I found "1992" to be janky and as much of an exploitative cash-grab based on negroid male pain as a film set in the Antebellum-era, and I stopped watching those films nearly a decade ago.
As I said previously, a lot can change in nearly a decade's time, but L.A. won't. Which is why l won't be revisiting my land of origin like I find no need to revisit this film.

Here’s a bit of a departure from my usual art posting but I’d like to get the word out about my dear friend Edrian and his friend Angeles’s endurance performance and hunger strike for a free Palestine in Los Angeles starting today, June 17th. (More info on Edrian’s Instagram and at venerations.cargo.site)
Edrian will begin cutting out paper dolls and ribbons to reach 35,647 of each, reflecting the reported death toll of Palestinians killed by Israel’s genocide in Gaza since Oct. 7th. He will not move from the venue until he is done and do nothing aside from cutting with few exceptions made for his own physical and economic survival. In addition to that and to represent a microcosm of the suffering in Gaza and Palestine, he will be on HUNGER STRIKE until he finishes. It’s an impossible task to do alone before starving so audience participation is essential. I’m spreading the word to ask for support through participation!
You can participate in a number of ways (more detailed instructions here):
Spread the word. Word of mouth and social media sharing are crucial as this performance is being promoted pretty exclusively via word of mouth.
Donate money to Palestinian aid funds! Certain high donation amounts can help Edrian continue his endurance performance by allowing him to engage in life-giving activities like showering or socializing with a loved one, and reaching the 100k total goal allows him to end his hunger strike.
If you live in and around Los Angeles, visit the venue (800 Date Ave, Alhambra, CA 91803) There you can help him cut and show your support. ***The performance is on the second floor of the venue and there is no elevator so it is not accessible except by stairs :(
If you don’t live near LA, you can cut paper dolls and mail them to the venue address to count towards the total. (printable templates here) This is what I will be doing. It’s easy to do with any spare time you’re not using your hands. I recommend mailing them in small batches if possible to get them in on time and reduce the risk of losing mail. I also recommend including info about the count of paper dolls in each parcel (for example include a note telling the total number of paper dolls) Every small amount counts!
If you are an Art Center College of Design student or alumni, sign the petition to pressure Art Center to divest from Israel! Art Center has refused to host Edrian and Angeles for their performance, torn down their posters promoting it, and in general refused to take a stance against Israel’s genocide. As artists and human beings we must resist genocide and refuse to support institutions that side against the people.
He is also live-streaming his performance and documenting progress if you would like to show support just by being present.
If you’ve never participated in a political performance before now’s a great chance, any little bit counts! I appreciate any time or effort you take to read this, support my friends, and work towards a free Palestine! ♥️🇵🇸

IHOP, 701 S Fremont Ave, Alhambra, CA 91803
Tumblr media
I’ve been to many IHOP locations and Alhambra’s is below average. The service left a lot to be desired and even the pancakes didn’t seem as good. Choose from pancakes, omelettes, waffles, biscuits (new), breakfast burritos, sandwiches, burgers, etc. They had special pancakes inspired by a digital collectible card game called Magic: The Gathering Arena (I don’t know what that is).
Pumpkin spice pancakes ($7.99): 2 pancakes for $8 seems kinda expensive since the pancakes weren’t that large. They taste more like pumpkin spice than pumpkin. They were tender but not that fluffy. There wasn’t much whipped cream on top.
Coffee ($3.99): The carafe is much smaller now and no refills were offered. The coffee is bitter and typical diner coffee.
The service was the bare minimum. The server took my order, brought my food, and slipped a check on the table. She didn’t check in on me to see if I wanted more coffee or anything. Syrups, ketchup, sugar, and salt & pepper were already on the table.
The building is older but it looks like the added newer touches like the laminate floor, the tables, the pendant lamps. It has a contemporary feel. IHOP has a rewards program, hoppy hour (weekdays from 2 PM – 5 PM), and an app. It’s open 24 hours. There’s free wi-fi but it seemed very slow.
3 out of 5 stars.

City Of Dreams #CVReview
Tumblr media
Though this film did nothing to bolster empathy for the illegal immigrant community than runs through my city of origin, "City of Dreams" does shed an un-busheled light over what goes on in So.Cal.
Though I did stand up when San Gabriel was mentioned and expressed equal amounts of revulsion when I heard Riverside, Echo Park, and Boyle Heights - "City of Dreams" is a stark reminder that that is all what L.A. is. - a microchasm of the American dream.
From the protagonists to the antagonists constantly probing the audience "Is this America ? Is this the American Dream?", to the afterword of the film with lead actor Ari Lopez claiming to be in disbelief about illegal immigrant U.S. working conditions I find it hard to believe the incredulity of the Latin community, let alone the U.S. community as a whole.
In the U.S.' individualistic society, the downtrodden are out of sight and out of mind, unless if needed in service - as can be seen during the footchase scene when a passerby asks Ari's character which jeans she should buy since she has an aloof boyfriend/pet wallet.
I did roofing without proper harness gear in Florida earlier last month. This film depicted that with an illegal at the end.
I grew up in Los Angeles County : 91803, 90043, 91776 - Mexican's were always isolationist and prideful in that isolationism.
I can identify with working in a textile plant amongst illegal from CA to FL - admittedly I never imagined them going through the horror's Ari's protagonist experiences within the film; albeit growing up in the City of Dreams myself I experienced the butt-naked beatings that pervade the film - only they were from my pill popping mother.
Suffice it to say, in L.A. - screams of abused children are not heard. So the GTA-esque "as long as you run into a cop the police will investigate" trope was legit, though never have I seen an African migrant in L.A. or a Latino say "Papa" in The County. The former is more Midwest, the latter is more East Coast.
So with a film like "Skincare" at the box office, "City of Dreams" is another picture that shows a realistic depiction of the seediness of L.A. County that I grew up around and leaves me baffled when I hear people throughout my travels say they would kill to come to my hood.
But the film is not necessairly an L.A. expose, though it functions as one. No, "City of Dreams" is meant to pull at the heartstrings of the U.S. populace to be soft on the issues of illegal immigration.
Yeah, there are illegals that do come here unwillingly, but I've only spoken to those who have claimed to have come here illegally through their own volition - so I'll trust what I know, like in the film when the Benz pulled up to the textile company and it was a Russian anchor baby who was running the whole thing - very similar to a 1st gen. asshole I begged for work from the Middle East while I was stranded in Knoxville, TN earlier this year.
Stereotypes eventually evolve into caricatures, and as the film ended and the bus filled with migrants pulled up to the junior aoccer camp - I wondered where their next stop was. Would it still be in the States?
The epilogue said " watch the news to see what happens next ..." - chances are the gang of illegals in the film are headed to further populate my city of origin and the country as a whole as my ethnic group gets further pushed out and pushed down the U.S. caste system.
i was in Alabama two months ago and saw a van filled with illegals pull into a gas station in Birmingham. I asked the locals if they knew what they were doing there - they did not know or seem to care.
Maybe they will when they see their families resources go that protected class in the U.S. sick process of illegal naturalization.
The horrors that happen in "City of Dreams" are sometimes a part of that process, often times not.
"City of Dreams" is a overgeneralized and largely embellished tale of the So. Cal illegal immigrant experiene. A reminder for an L.A. native such as myself that I never had a home, and a warning for the U.S. migrant - illegal or otherwise - that "America" has a dirty welcome mat with the shanty lodging at best, but you will work for it like you have Beckham's genes and the means to live in Beverly Hills; but once you realize you don't - you'll wish you had a nearby sewing machine to go Milton on too.

But he is worried and it broke my heart so hard that I actually eat sometimes with him but end up hating myself and wanting to cry. I'm messed up. I'm sick of being sick.

Papa’s Tacos, 2130 S Fremont Ave, Alhambra, CA 91803
Tumblr media
Papa’s Tacos is inside Michoacana, the Mexican ice cream and snack shop. They have a counter inside with a separate menu (I don’t think Papa’s is related to Michoacana). The menu includes tacos, burritos, tortas, plates, breakfast, and specials (pozole, tamales). Order at the counter. They used to offer lengua but it was taken off the menu, sadly.  A few other items on the menu had been papered over.
I could see al pastor on the trompo (vertical skewer) with a pineapple on top.
I was impressed that the plate of food included complimentary corn tortilla chips, 2 types of salsa (rojo and verde), chopped cilantro, chopped onions, and limes. The chips were light and crispy. The salsa rojo was thicker and tasted slightly fermented (old?). The salsa verde was medium spicy and very good (not too salty).
Taco al pastor ($2.89): there wasn’t much al pastor but the al pastor meat was well seasoned (slightly sweet, spiced) and tender. It was served on top of two small “street taco” sized warm corn tortillas, with chopped onions, and cilantro. The taco wasn’t wet or too greasy.
Queso birria taco ($4.49): The queso birria taco is considerably larger than a street taco. It also had two corn tortillas dipped in consommé and crisped up on the flat top. The beef birria was in large pieces – very tender and not too salty. There was also a mild cheese but no cheese skirt. Very tasty though there was no consommé (and none on the menu).
There isn’t much ambiance to speak of and their equipment looks old. There is parking however, in the strip mall.

THE “BEST” CHEESECAKE SHOWDOWN
Tumblr media
Now let’s put our rubric to the test! We tried 4 different takes of the classic cheesecake to get a better sense of range across the industry. We compared cheesecakes from a national chain (Marie Callender’s), a fancy shmancy NYC bakery (Mah Ze Dahr), an old fashioned iconic diner (Junior’s), and a supermarket (Ralph’s). Here’s how it broke down:
Marie Callender’s | 220 S Atlantic Blvd, Monterey Park, CA 91754
Traditional New York-Style Cheesecake
Crust flavor - not graham enough, sweet, bland
Crust flakiness/ texture - soft, some crunch, a little mushy and wet
Density - not so dense, wet, soft, moist
Creaminess / Moistness - moist, creamy,
Flavor (in general) - a little too sweet, almost lemon tartness
Richness - not rich enough
Looks - pretty, not perfect but still good
Mah Ze Dahr | 28 Greenwich Ave, New York, NY 10011
The Heavenly Cheesecake
Crust flavor - crust is kind of bitter actually? I think that the intention is that it should be bitter. Evidently it is dark chocolate.
Crust flakiness/ texture - cookie/cake like, very very soft
Density - it is thick, but not fudge like. It’s actually very soft, fluffy
Creaminess / Moistness - quite creamy and moist but not overbearing
Flavor (in general) - it’s good, i think there’s a lemony taste,
Richness - i think it’s rich enough, but maybe katie doesn’t think so hehe.
Looks - it’s a little on the small side? Cute and plump tho
Junior's Restaurant and Bakery | 386 Flatbush Ave Ext, Brooklyn, NY 11201
Plain Cheesecake
Crust flavor - there is no flavor, it is a cake of sorts
Crust flakiness/ texture - there is limited texture, not really there
Density - a good density,
Creaminess / Moistness - moisture is there
Flavor (in general) - flavor is mostly sweet, not that tang
Richness - very rich and i think i won’t be able to finish it
Looks - it’s just really big, i don’t know if it’s that pretty
Supermarket | 2400 W Commonwealth Ave, Alhambra, CA 91803
The Father’s Table New York Style Cheesecake
Crust flavor - good graham cracker flavor, can taste the cinnamon spice in there
Crust flakiness/ texture - grainy, a little crunchy, drier than the cheesecake, didn’t absorb the wetness of the cake
Density - pretty dense, borders the density of a cream cheese brick or a chunk of ice cream
Creaminess / Moistness - very moist, i would say it’s more milky than creamy, not the first thing i would say
Flavor (in general) - pretty classic, the cheesecake part itself (separate from the crust) is pretty low flavor, has some sweetness and some tang. I’m ok that it was less flavor, bc the crust complements it
Richness - rich enough that I couldn’t have more than 1 slice, but made it through one without too much effort
Looks - very classic!! Looks great
The verdict: We liked the supermarket cheesecake best! What can we say? We’re “regular” people!
