John Galliano’s ‘Dream Collection’ for Dior, 1998

I've been following your blog for a while now and I enjoy the content. I'm curious about a couple of things. I find that I can tell when something is older, say 90's or 2000's and thus can sort of see trends historically. What I want to know is if you, as a person who follows fashion more closely can tell designers from a picture or see trends from different designers over several seasons.
Yeah, if you show me a picture I can almost always tell what designer it is, and usually tell you when it was.
Some are distinct enough that I can tell you exactly what year and season it was (though if I'm being honest, I really just don't have a great memory, especially for dates)
Others the trends are distinct enough that I could narrow it down pretty closely, between the clothing, models, and even runway design. For some it's pretty easy, like the galliano era of dior was very different than the current MGC era, so if you've followed the brand you clearly know what time frame you're working with.
But if you've ever heard the cerulean blue monologue from devil wears prada, yes it is possible to recall what designers did each season and what trends that influenced if you follow fashion long enough (though to my knowledge, none of the designers used cerulean in 2002)

Galliano - "Freefall (Peshay Vocal Mix)" Science Fiction Jazz - Volume Two by Minus 8 Song released in 1996. Compilation released in 1997. Drum n Bass
It's a full-on mid-90s London affair here, with dnb workhorse Peshay remixing acid jazz group Galliano. This song was first issued in 1996 on a Galliano single called "Roofing Tiles," and then it appeared the following year on the second installment of Swiss DJ and musician Minus 8's well-compiled Science Fiction Jazz series.
Really nice and spacious tune that sees Peshay's dnb contributions complementing Galliano's acid jazz bits, from the flute to the mellow keys to the guitar.

my dear, your last post gave me this idea: Desire convinces Daniel to wear something radically different from his usual aesthetic. What could it be? 👀 How would our Nightmare react? 👀👀
Oooooo!! 😏 Well I've always wanted to see Daniel embrace Morpheus's more... Outlandish outfits. Like that rather fabulous admirals attire. Twin that with your headcanon about Dani wearing Cori's coats... And well, one particular garment came to mind...
(Dream's Bedchamber, the Dreaming)
Daniel: This looks familiar.
Desire: No it doesn't. Since when have you worn anything that wasn't white, off white or white adjacent. Honestly Danio, frosted bangs and white trousers, twinned with a white top... Are you trying to look like you escaped a 90's boyband?
Daniel: I'm really not sure it's appropriate sibling.
Desire: Oh pish, Dream's had a penchant for his slutty little sailor suits since he crawled out from under mother's skirts. You'd cause more controversy not turning up to a family dinner in a frock coat and an utterly ridiculous hat.
Daniel: Must it be green?
Desire: It brings out your eyes. Trust me Dandelion you look an absolute peach. Now come on, chin up, shoulders back... Best tit forward.
Corinthian: My lord before you leave... Wait, is that... Mine?
Desire: Oh would you look at that, so it is. Well, if you'll excuse me boys. I'll see you there Daenerys.
Daniel: My appoligies Corinthian, it appears my sibling had enjoyed a joke at my expense. Here, let me return....
Corinthian: No! Leave it on... And the stockings.
................................................
Death: Will Dream not be joining us today?
Desire: Oh, he's just a little held up. You could say he had a.. wardrobe malfunction on route.
(The outfit that inspired Dani's... John Galliano for Dior 1998-1999 Couture Show)

Seeing ur posts over a period of time now, maybe a year? I had a thought that woman designers of the 90’s had more impact changing the dominant style that would reign supreme going into the 00’s. I’m thinking like the changed silhouettes from the blocky shoulders of the 80’s, that male designers kept making into the 90’s. You got Anna Sui and Betsey Johnson , the first that come to mind for me, those flirty cap sleeve dresses and changed wat a short skirt can be. Obviously or at least to me, those styles are the ones that stuck around while formal, mature styles started to fizzle out. What do you think? I’m not so sure, but since you’ve seen so many of these pictures. I can’t send on anon so I have to own up to saying this lol
i completely have to agree! i love galliano and gaultier but the truth is their specific styles (from both of their respective peaks) havent really stayed in the mainstream. designers like betsey, anna sui, zandra rhodes, mary mcfadden, donna karan, lolita lempicka etc imo have all had looks that lasted so long culturally up until today. with that being said i actually do prefer galliano and gaultier's peak styles and would prefer to wear them anyday. but thats just me . also sorry for taking over a week to answer this i haven't had time to really think loll

"Night Bloom". Anneliese Seubert in a ball gown by John Galliano for Haute Couture Givenchi, Paris, 1966".
Spotlight On Photographer Lillian Bassman :
'Revisit a Lifetime of Fashion Photography with Lillian Bassman" by Steph Eckardt
"As the art director of Junior Bazaar, a short-lived Harper’s Bazaar spin-off, Lillian Bassman spent the early 40’s working with photography greats like Robert Frank and Richard Avedon. Then she decided to pick up the camera herself. Soon, it was Bassman’s own images appearing in the pages of Bazaar—carefully blurred, fashion-focused silhouettes that John Galliano once described as possessed of “painterly strokes of light.” Though she did lose a bit of fire at one point—Bassman destroyed decades’ worth of prints and negatives in the 70’s, even debating abandoning the medium—she stuck with her instantly recognizable black-and-white photography, shooting Galliano’s designs up into the 90’s, even toying around with digital before she died in 2012. Did you see Dior s/s 2024 show ? I was disappointed, it felt like a fast fashion brand’s collection
I did. And to be fair, Maria Grazia's Dior is always like that 🙈 there are moments of inspiration but most of it is just the same ideas over and over again and a lot of old Valentino. But it works. There is always at least one it item that sells well and the accessories (which are the main thing for brands) do very well. This Dior is targeted to a very specific audience. Very different from Galliano's or Raf's. I'm not that audience but I have enjoyed a few of their accessories. I wouldn't wear 90% of the clothes, though.
Despite al that, I have to admit I have a bit of a soft spot for the brand because the media team, which is who I work with, is fantastic. Some of the nicest people in the industry.
